From the moment he entered medical school in the late 1970s, people around Michael Swango thought he was a little odd. But even though he expounded upon his obsessions with violent death and serial killings to anybody within earshot, almost nobody connected him to the string of deaths among patients under his care. When an investigation finally took place at the Ohio State medical center, hospital administrators sympathized with Swango--against the direct testimony of patients and nurses--and seemed more concerned with how revelations of a murderous doctor might affect their public image than with the safety of their clients. And, remarkably, even after being released from prison in Illinois, where he had been convicted of (nonfatally) poisoning several of his coworkers, Swango was able to obtain positions at hospitals in South Dakota and New York. When American authorities finally started to pursue his case, he fled the country and began plying his trade in Zimbabwe. In June 1998, after being captured during an attempt to reenter the United States, he was sentenced to 42 months in federal prison--on fraud charges related to his employment in New York.

The truly frightening aspect of Blind Eye is not the relentless chain of murders, but the ease with which Swango was able to repeatedly slip through the cracks in the medical system, simply by lying about the nature of his felony conviction. James B. Stewart methodically traces every step of Swango's career, laying out a straightforward narrative with all the suspense of a well-crafted thriller. Although attempts to "explain" Swango's behavior through psychopathology and a historical rise in the incidences of serial killing derail the ending somewhat, Blind Eye is still a must-read for true crime buffs--or anyone who enjoys good journalism. --Ron Hogan

Book Description

No one could believe the handsome young doctor might be a serial killer. Wherever he was hired -- in Ohio, Illinois, New York, South Dakota -- Michael Swango at first seemed the model physician. Then his patients began dying under suspicious circumstances.

At once a gripping read and a hard-hitting look at the inner workings of the American medical system, Blind Eye describes a professional hierarchy where doctors repeatedly accept the word of fellow physicians over that of nurses, hospital employees, and patients -- even as horrible truths begin to emerge. With the prodigious investigative reporting that has defined his Pulitzer Prize-winning career, James B. Stewart has tracked down survivors, relatives of victims, and shaken coworkers to unearth the evidence that may finally lead to Swango's conviction.

Combining meticulous research with spellbinding prose, Stewart has written a shocking chronicle of a psychopathic doctor and of the medical establishment that chose to turn a blind eye on his criminal activities.

4 out of 5 stars Black Eye for the Medical Profession.......2007-01-29

This is a fascinating story about how the medical establishment did not detect a psycopath in their midst. Even after detection, they allowed him to continue as a doctor.

Even more upsetting was the failure of the faculty of the college of medicine at Southern Illinois University to detect and fail incompetent students. These students, including Michael Swango, were allowed to continue; even after episodes of total incompetence. If these policies are common at other medical schools, it offers an explanation for the large number of substandard physicians.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-01-09

Not only was this book a great read, it also displays the significant truth about the world of medicine. This type of behavior (ignoring what's in front of you) happens everyday in medicine. All credentialing personnel should be required to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Required reading for anyone who receives medical care.......2006-11-29

I was given "Blind Eye" when I first began working at a physician monitoring program as a clinician. At the time, I was under the impression that because physicians have so much responsibility to "do no harm," they would automatically report themselves or fellow physicians if they believed they were impaired mentally, physically or emotionally. How wrong I was!

"Blind Eye" represents the epitome of how our medical system supports physicians, even when they are dangerous to themselves and others. Through a painstaking and exhaustive review of the life and career of Dr. Michael Swango, James B. Stewart illustrates how easy it was for a medical doctor to manipulate nurses, colleagues, administrators, patients, and even his own family into believing that he was a competent physician. Stewart further demonstrates how the "good old boy" system is alive and well in America, in which doctors look the other way when something seems wrong, even when evidence to the contrary is right in front of them.

If I had not read this book, knowing it is a true story, I probably would not have believed that a physician could truly get away with murder; now I am truly convinced that this is, unfortunatly, the case. "Blind Eye" should be required reading for every person who works with or sees a personal physician.

4 out of 5 stars terrific read....uh, except for............2006-08-29

Stewart's coverage of the l'affaire Swango is exemplary--one of the best true crime reads in the last ten years, this one....except...except for what I've found to be a common occurrence in books of this genre, namely, in this instance, that Michael Swango, not once, not twice, but probably 20 times, is described as "handsome": what's up with that? Swango looks like a cartoon horse, and in no sense of the word "handsome" is he, well, even slightly better than subpar in the looks department. Several b/w pix here document this guy's oversized choppers, narrow head, and so on. So why is this the case? Possibly to lure name actors into vying for the lead in a filming of this, and thus make the project more attractive in order to secure a better deal? That's the only thing I can think of and, as I say, this is a common problem in the true crime genre. SO: it's a five-star read, but docked a notch because, if the author continually overstates a major fact regarding the book's main character's appearance, the reader HAS to wonder, Hey, what other liberties are taken with the truth here? Be that as it may--a tip o' the hat to Stewart for his page-turning prose. Possibly the best book I've ever read about a poisoner, including the great works covering the infamous 19th and early 20th century cases, when poison was much in vogue.

4 out of 5 stars SERIAL KILLER DOCTOR...!!!!.......2006-08-21

THIS BOOK IS A GREAT POWER PACKED STORY OF HOW A SERIAL KILLER DOCTOR COULD GET AWAY WITH HIS MURDERS FOR SO LONG, AND BE COVERED UP BY THE "DOCTORS PROFESSIONAL PROTECT EACH OTHER RULES" AGAIN AND AGAIN. IT IS VERY SCARY HOW U CAN NOT EVEN TRUST A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL WHEN IN THE HOSPITAL. IT CERTAINLY WILL MAKE ME QUESTION ANYTHING I AM GIVEN OR INJECTED WITH NEXT TIME I AM IN THE HOSPITAL. A MUST READ IF U HAVE WONDERED HOW MEDICAL "ACCIDENTS" HAPPEN!!

    Book Description

"It is to you that I owe Sherlock Holmes."-Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to his mentor, renowned forensic scientist Dr. Joseph Bell

As a young medical student, Arthur Conan Doyle, famously studied under the pioneering forensic detective Dr. Joseph Bell. Taking this as a starting point, author David Pirie has woven a compelling thriller which partners Bell (widely believed to be the model for Sherlock Holmes himself) and Doyle as innovators in criminal investigation, exploring the strange underworld of violence and sexual hypocrisy running below the surface of the Victorian era.

When the impoverished young Arthur Doyle opens his first medical practice, he is puzzled by the symptoms presented by Heather Grace, a sweet young woman whose parents have died tragically several years before. Heather has a strange eye complaint, but is also upset by visions of a phantom bicyclist who vanishes as soon as he is followed. This enigma, however, is soon overshadowed as Doyle finds himself embroiled in more threatening events-including the murder of a rich Spanish businessman-that call for the advice of the eminent Dr Bell. But despite coming to Doyle's aid, Dr Bell dismisses the murder of Senor Garcia as a rather unimportant diversion from the incident which Bell considers to have real criminal implications: the matter of the patient's eyes and the solitary cyclist.

David Pirie gained rave reviews for his screenplay depicting the "real" Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Joseph Bell, in the two part, Edgar-nominated TV series "Murder Rooms." Treading that same critically acclaimed ground, The Patient's Eyes is the first in a stand-alone cycle of novels written from Doyle's point of view that include a whole new perspective on the adventures of Bell and Doyle and the genesis of the best-known detective in all of mystery literature. Tense and dramatic The Patient's Eyes marks the debut of a brilliant new crime novelist.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story of the dark beginnings of Sherlock Holmes.......2006-10-28

Written by the screenwriter of the BBC's Murder Rooms, this mystery chronicles Arthur Conan Doyle's first meeting with the eccentric Dr. Joseph Bell. Providing the basis for Sherlock Holmes, Bell and his "method" are put to the test with a number of cases, but the series of events surrounding a beautiful patient of Doyle's is the most sinister. As a fan of the short-lived television series, I bought the book as soon as I heard about it. Surprisingly the book did not strictly follow the episodes that I had seen. Pirie's evocative writing perfectly captures the memoirs of a troubled man recalling his dark past. He also has a talent for creating an ominous, foreboding atmosphere. I'd recommend this mystery to avid Sherlock Holmes fans, but also to anyone who wants to read a dark, thrilling story.

5 out of 5 stars Arthur Conan Doyle meets Joseph Bell........2003-12-28

David Pirie's "The Patient's Eyes" is the first in a series of books about the collaboration between Arthur Conan Doyle and Joseph Bell. Doyle is a young medical student in Edinburgh when he meets Bell, who is both a teacher in the medical school and a forensic scientist. Doyle soon becomes Bell's clerk and the two work together on a number of cases, including the very strange one in this novel.

Doyle's patient, Heather Grace, is a lovely young woman who suffers from eye troubles and nightmares. She also believes that a man has been surreptitiously following her, and may wish to do her harm. Since Miss Grace is about to come into a great deal of money, Doyle suspects that her relatives may want to get their hands on her fortune. When Dr. Bell intercedes in the case, he uses his forensic skills, his intuition, and his uncanny powers of detection to get to the bottom of the affair.

Pirie is a superior writer and he brings all of the characters in "The Patient's Eyes" to brilliant life. Doyle is a callow and troubled young man who comes from a dysfunctional family. Bell is Doyle's mentor, and he may be the real life model for the great fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes. Pirie's language, settings, and even the titles he chooses for his chapters are all reminiscent of those used in the Sherlock Holmes stories. There are also puzzles galore in this book to intrigue those who love interesting ciphers.

The story is complicated yet thoroughly engrossing, and I was genuinely surprised by the developments at the end of the book. Pirie has a knack for writing satisfying mysteries and I look forward to more novels about the collaboration between Arthur Conan Doyle and Joseph Bell.

5 out of 5 stars The first case for Arthur Conan Doyle and Dr. Joseph Bell.......2003-09-05

Those who have admired the cases of Sherlock Holmes and found "The 7 Percent Solution" to be a fresh look at the first great detective of popular fiction will find a different game afoot in "The Patient's Eye." The intriguing premise for David Pirie's novel is that Arthur Conan Doyle is playing the Watson role to Dr. Joseph Bell, the writer's real-life mentor in medical school at Edinburough and the model for Holmes. Doyle starts off in the role of Scully, unable to accept that the practice of medicine has anything to do with Dr. Bell's deductive reasoning from minute clues, but in due course he becomes a true believer in Bell's pioneering work in forensic medicine.

The case involves Miss Heather Grace, a young heiress who has been traumatized by an attack by a lunatic who murdered her parents. Now Miss Grace is subject to visions of a figure who follows her on her bicycle. The conceit here is that Pirie is working backwards from several of the cases from the Holmes canon, most obviously "The Solitary Cyclist," but also "The Speckled Band" and "Wisteria Lodge." The idea is that Doyle later fictionalized these stories from the "real" events contained herein. It was a good move on Pirie's part not to simply offer up the "true" story of one the original Holmes mysteries or to try and tackle one of the "biggies" in the canon. There is also more romance than you find in Doyle, what with the young doctor falling for his patient.

Most importantly, Pirie is able to present Doyle and Bell as interesting substitutes for Watson and Holmes. There is no pretense of friendship between the pair; they are teacher and student. Doyle is not as much the inept foil that Watson serves in the stories (indeed, he solves several initial mysteries before getting in over his head) and Bell is arguably more charismatic than the driven Holmes. There are times when Pirie follows the Doyle model too closely and the gallery of suspects is rather overdrawn, but as the first effort in what is clearly going to be a developing series, "The Patient's Eyes" is worth the reading. The execution is not quite up to the ambitious idea, but that is a minor concern. The one caveat is that you should read over the original Sherlock Holmes stories on which this novel is based to better appreciate how Pirie is using them in this story.

    3 out of 5 stars Doesn't quite work...........2003-05-25

First-time novelist David Pirie deserves kudos for doing
something a little different along the lines of a Sherlock
Holmes pastiche. His characters are Dr. Bell and Conan Doyle
themselves. On the other hand, he runs off the rails pretty
early on, with a perfervid yet elliptical style that is more
along the lines of Anna Katherine Green than Dr. Watson, and
with (oh, no, not again!) standard pastiche plot B.

There is no chemistry (or even friendship) between Dr. Bell and
Dr. Conan Doyle, and their cases--- "real life" incidents that
are close parallels to Holmes-Watson adventures such as
"The Speckled Band" and "The Solitary Cyclist"--- tend to
be more annoying or unsatisfying than interesting.

The usual problem with standard pastiche plot B is that the
behavior of a central character is necessarily totally
inconsistent with his actual aims--- here the problem is
magnified, since there are at least three and maybe four
characters whose behavior throughout the "adventure" makes no
sense whatsoever in terms of their eventually-revealed
    motivations.

Conan Doyle's overheated style continually sets the reader up
for "a revelation more terrifying than mere mortal flesh can
endure," and then follows up with, more often than not,
no payoff at all, or a payoff that amounts to an empty
pay envelope. At the end of the very episodic "novel," Dr.
Conan Doyle hints that in the next adventure, we'll encounter
Jack the Ripper (whom CD and Bell have seemingly matched wits
with years before during Watson's medical school days).
It's a promising setup, but we've been burned so often in
the present book, I wonder if it is worth checking out the next
    in line.

    Book Description

As a boy dreaming of becoming a doctor, Mike Litrel imagined that practicing medicine would be like living inside an action movie, always knowing how to help someone, doing it, and feeling like a hero. Instead, he discovered that his role as doctor was more supporting actor than main character. It is God who is the true Physician, the source of all healing.

The proof was revealed to him every day in the patient rooms, hallways, emergency, and operating rooms at the hospital where he did his obstetrics and gynecology training—Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital, the last refuge of that city's sickest and poorest residents.

When a homeless cocaine addict who had been brutally gang-raped turned out to be pregnant, he gave her a photo of the ultrasound showing the tiny fetus growing in her womb. She looked at it with dead eyes, and dropped it to the floor.

A year later, he found her back in the hospital, glowing with good health, a robust newborn in her arms. She was drug free, earning her GED. How did this miracle happen? She pulled from her wallet the tattered ultrasound. "This saved my life," she said. "When I looked at this, I just knew that no matter what I done, God loved me."

Borrowing a medical expression to explain the unexplained—"the eyes don't see what the mind don't know"—Dr. Litrel tells the dramatic, funny, poignant, and always inspirational stories that prove beyond all doubt that the best medicine in the world is human kindness and faith in God.

These are stories that will make you laugh, cry, and understand that miracles do happen, every day.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful. Simply wonderful........2007-08-03

This book is the most beautiful thing I have ever read. The stories are touching and sometimes funny, and it shows that contrary to the image portrayed by actors on TV, real doctors live surprisingly ordinary lives. I've read Dr. Litrel's articles in the local paper for years, and I'm glad that this book is available so that more people than just those of us who live in Metro Atlanta can read it and be inspired by the beautiful stories.

Dr.Litrel is my doctor, and I have never met a kinder person. His writing reflects his personality, sweet, caring, funny, and with a good Christian soul.

This is easily my favorite book, and I encourage everyone to read it.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Writer, A Wonderful Doctor.......2005-04-16

I have been reading Dr. Litrel's monthly columns in local magazines for years and am so glad to have them all in one place now. In this book he gives so many different viewpoints: husband, father, inexperienced intern, very experienced OB-GYN, co-worker, friend, brother, son. Every story gives insights into his feelings and experiences in each of these roles, and the people he interacts with.

Dr. Litrel is my own personal physician and has seen me through 6 pregnancies. He has cried with me, laughed with me, prayed with me, been exasperated with me and through it all has provided me with top notch medical care. I don't know how he juggles all his different roles, runs a busy practice and still has time to write, but I am glad he does, because he has touched many lives and his stories will touch your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book and weep-with joy.......2005-03-14

Litrel was a starry-eyed intern and resident in a gritty, inner-city hospital when he began to encounter the harsh facts of urban life-drugs, violence, unwanted pregnancies, hopelessness, and an exhausted and weary staff of doctors and nurses. Rather than become weary and jaded himself, Dr. Litrel paid attention to the little miracles that were happening around him, and began to write them up as essays which are collected in this book. I defy anyone to read them without occasionally laughing and sobbing out loud-not from grief but from joy and amazement at the human spirit and the power of faith to pull people through impossible situations. There is no sugar-coating on these stories, which include a raped drug addict who becomes a beaming, healthy mother, and a shackled prisoner who is caught in the act of human kindness. Throughout, Litrel presents himself as a flawed and initially disbelieving participant in these episodes, one who occasionally gets cranky and even careless. He uses self-deprecating humor in an artful way, as a counter-weight to the desperation around him, and always brings each story home to his core theme, that the best medicine is human caring and faith in God.

5 out of 5 stars Thought-Provoking Love Story that Transcends Time.......2007-04-07

    APOOO Rating: 4.5

Behind Those Eyes by T.P. Carter opens with a timeless moment that instantly grabs the reader's attention. From there, we meet Dr. Taiyler Richardson. Taiyler is a woman who knows what she wants and is not afraid to go after it. Like any successful woman, she wants a successful man who can fulfill all her needs. When she meets Derrick, at one of her sorority's annual events, she dismisses him. But Derrick has his sights set on her and he will not give up until he has her as his woman. After much trying, Derrick achieves success and Taiyler gives him a chance. The two have a wonderful relationship, they get along well and they enjoy each other's company but things change once Derrick introduces Taiyler to his best-friend, Nathanial Woods.

Nathanial Woods is a man who loves his wife and daughter. He thanks God everyday because of those two females in his life. Life for him is right where he wants it to be as a married man with a child; he has great friends, a steady career and good health. But when he meets his best-friend Derrick's girlfriend, Taiyler, his life as he knows it alters forever. Nathanial and Taiyler are faced with a dilemma of what to do as two individuals who have a growing affection for one another that cannot be ignored but both are in equally committed relationships.

The supporting characters, Derrick and Taiyler's best-friend Shala, are quite important in this story as well. Derrick is a successful business man who is a ladies man. He is no stranger to playing the field but when he meets Taiyler, for the first time in his life he begins to entertain thoughts about having a `happily ever after' with her. Shala is having an issue with revealing the truth about her sexuality to her family. She is unwilling to compromise herself because of the love and the freedom she feels while being with the one she loves.

Behind Those Eyes by T.P. Carter is simply amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The writing style was refreshing and readers will enjoy how as each chapter progresses there is a switch between the main and supporting characters. The theme was fascinating and very thought-provoking. What if you were in a relationship with someone you loved and another person came along that happens to be your soul-mate, what would you do? It is a situation that would require a great deal of thought; this is what the main characters have to go through. Speaking of the main characters, to readers they will seem like real-life people. Readers will be able to say they know someone like main characters Nathaniel Woods and Taiyler Richardson. There is also a particular paranormal element in this story that deals with the essence of time. Once readers have completed the story, they will understand how love will transcend time when soul-mates meet. This is a passion-filled, sensual book that I recommend to all book lovers.

    4 out of 5 stars A Spiritual Love Story.......2007-04-05

An effective story that evokes great passion for the characters who are believably placed in unbelievable circumstances. You will be left yearning for love with the knowledge that its power cannot be overcome.

    3 out of 5 stars Just okay.......2007-03-25

This book was just okay. I agree with one of the reviewers when she said Ms Carter writes along the Dickey style. Behind Those Eyes started out very boring and confusing and remained boring throughout a good percentage of the story. It did pick up nearer the end, but by then I was ready for the book to end. I didn't care for the story because there were just too many coincidences and it was too predictable. I did however enjoy the lovemaking scenes. Ms. Carter does have that portion of writing all the way together. Overall, the book was just okay for me, but different strokes for different folks.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-09

Its kind of confusing in the first chapter but it all comes together in the end. This is one of the best stories I have ever read. I like the fact that its about two people that have a connection but try to keep it in check. In the end, its too much and they end up together but at a price.

This book looks good and has nice pictures but I think it sways too much on the side of "better to refer and be safe". If you follow the guidelines, I feel like you would end up referring alot. Doesn't have to much about pathophysiology and other essentials so we can explain things to patients.

    Book Description

What happens to love when life gets in the way?

When a privileged young doctor falls in love with a handsome black man, he searches for the courage to follow his heart down an unexpected path, leaving behind a wife, children, and a promising political career. Can Dr. Brendan Garrison give up his white-bread world of servants, cocktail parties, and charity events for a future with Jonathan Miles? Can Jonathan leave the security of his job as church choir director to pursue his dream of singing opera? And can their love survive the stigma of homosexuality and the oppression of subtle racism that is still very much part of society? Whose Eye Is On Which Sparrow? reaches across the boundaries of class, culture, race, and sexuality to tell the story of the difficult choices that sometimes complicate a simple love.

Brendan hadn't been confronted with many ultimatums in his life. Most things had just fallen into his lap. Medical school, the one he wanted. Sandra. The kids. Success. An enormous house and a fancy car. Maybe this strange new desire would be the same. Maybe it would slide easily into that long chain of gifts from a benevolent ... No. Oh, no. It wasn't God who was tempting him this way. Forget that. He stretched again. Watched the sky, felt helpless. He did know one thing for sure: all this was no whim. No passing fancy that would fade as suddenly as it had appeared. No. It was welling up from someplace deep inside him. And he had no idea where it might take him.

But as he struggles to balance the responsibilities and demands of being a husband, healer, father, son, lover, and friend, Brendan is forced to make hard choices that will forever change his life and the lives of everyone he loves. His unexpected love for Jonathan has turned his well-ordered world upside down, shaking loose new feelings about what he believes—and what he believes in.

"There are some things I know about love, and one of them is this: If it's going to last, mean something, it can't be just a romantic fantasy. The kind we've been playing at. You can't keep it tucked away in a little compartment and bring it out only on special occasions. When you've got time for it. It has to be out there all the time, gaining strength, so it can survive the harsh realities it's bound to bump up against, day after day. It has to—or it will die."

From author Robert Taylor, whose All We Have Is Now remains one of the most popular books ever offered by the InsightOut® Book Club, Whose Eye Is On Which Sparrow? strikes just the right balance between head and heart as its characters struggle to find the courage to give up the lives they have for the lives they want.

    3 out of 5 stars Forbidden Romance.......2006-02-20

This story of an established WASP doctor and his affair with a young black choir director is a pleasant if mild tale. I had hope for surprises, but they really aren't in store here. The characters and settings are realistic, and as the story progresses you do wonder how these men will sustain their fervent love affair.

The real "controversy," if any, is not the interracial romance. While much is made of this, the more daunting obstacle is that Brendan, the doctor, is married. How he realizes his gay side, while remaining a loving (and sexual) husband, and good father, is the best-developed aspect of this novel. The way Brendan's wife reacts in the novel during various events is realistic and natural, a good stroke.

If you want a meaty book, this really is not it, though it's a nice read. There is a little too much dialogue and minutiae to suit my tastes. Don't take this as a bad review--I'm an avid reader and prefer novels that take a daring or unusual approach, or which trod a usual path with panache.

5 out of 5 stars Blends emotion and life-changing choices .......2005-04-10

Whose Eye Is On Which Sparrow? is a homosexual romance novel between a young married doctor and a handsome back man named Jonathan Miles. The doctor must wrestle with giving up his "white-bread" world, his wife and children, and a promising political career to pursue his romantic future, while Jonathan must decide whether to leave the security of his job as church choir director to follow his dream of becoming an opera singer. Transcending boundaries of race, class, and sexuality, as well as confronting the stigma and veiled racism that oppose the protagonists, Whose Eye Is On Which Sparrow? blends emotion and life-changing choices in a drama about how love can drastically change everything in one's life.

    3 out of 5 stars Moral fiction.......2005-03-30

In "Whose Eye is on Which Sparrow," a young doctor named Brendan, married with two children, wealthy, white, and socially connected, is shocked into recognizing his true sexuality as he examines a new patient, Jonathan, who is a handsome black singer and choral director. The novel takes the reader through the stages of their romance and the effect it has on both men and their very different communities. Robert Taylor clearly enjoys good writing--Brendan reads Flaubert, and in the author photo one can see a title of Henry James--and his subject is ripe with promise, but leaden dialogue and a certain tidiness of construction prevent the novel from achieving that promise. The novel's ungainly title is derived (mangled, actually) from a spiritual hymn, and I found that the book made more sense to me if I read it as an extended sermon, a moral tale. In this light, its predictable plot developments and its one-dimensional characters are less bothersome, and the reader can finish the book feeling the comfort of having one's moral truths illustrated and confirmed. I don't mean for this review to be overly harsh; I did enjoy the book and would recommend it to friends, but only those who are forgiving of less-than stellar writing.

5 out of 5 stars Whose Eye Is on Which Sparrow?.......2005-02-16

I am not one that reads a lot, but this book is great I could not put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Whose Eye Is On Which Sparrow?.......2004-10-14

What a sweet story! The book is deceptive in its simplicity. Here is a tale about two wonderful human beings - a young white married male doctor and a handsome black male choir director - who fall in love. These two generous and compassionate human beings must keep their affair a secret in order to comply with the rules imposed by a constraining society. The author lets us know that everyone can pursue his or her dream even if it means overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

I highly recommend this book for all types of libraries.
