Book Description
Waiting for Daisy is about loss, love, anger and redemption. It’s about doing all the things you swore you’d never do to get something you hadn’t even been sure you wanted. It’s about being a woman in a confusing, contradictory time. It’s about testing the limits of a loving marriage. And it’s about trying (and trying and trying) to have a baby.
Orenstein’s story begins when she tells her new husband that she’s not sure she ever wants to be a mother; it ends six years later after she’s done almost everything humanly possible to achieve that goal, from “fertility sex” to escalating infertility treatments to New Age remedies to forays into international adoption. Her saga unfolds just as professional women are warned by the media to heed the ticking of their biological clocks, and just as fertility clinics have become a boom industry, with over two million women a year seeking them out. Buffeted by one jaw-dropping obstacle after another, Orenstein seeks answers both medical and spiritual in America and Asia, along the way visiting an old flame who’s now the father of fifteen, and discovering in Japan a ritual of surprising solace. All the while she tries to hold onto a marriage threatened by cycles, appointments, procedures and disappointments. Waiting for Daisy is an honest, wryly funny report from the front, an intimate page-turner that illuminates the ambivalence, obsession, and sacrifice that characterize so many modern women’s lives.

Loved it.......2007-10-15
This book was exactly what I needed to read after struggling with pregnancies and feeling pretty alone in that. It is an amazing story of hope and loss that will -- sorry for the cliche -- make you laugh and make you cry. I highly recommend it!
Thank You, Peggy, For Writing This Book!.......2007-10-12
I am forever grateful to Peggy Orenstein for writing so candidly, not only about fertility issues, but about her own experience with loss. As someone who recently lost a daughter in utero I know how difficult it is to talk about miscarriage and stillbirth in this culture. Peggy's courage, honesty, and wit shine through as she shares the details of her journey into motherhood and her painful losses along the way. The writing in Waiting for Daisy is immaculate- crisp and addicting- and I appreciated every moment I spent reading it. I felt an immediate connection to Peggy because she was so real in her expressions of guilt, sadness, excitement, disappointment, and love. And her writing offered me much-needed laughter and hope. Thank you.
Fantastic: Reminds me of "Eat, Pray, Love".......2007-10-03
I thoroughly enjoyed this book-- surprisingly, because I didn't have any personal experience with infertility. I do have many friends and relatives with these experiences, so I was curious to understand more about what they're going through. The author is a brilliant and clever writer-- I loved her "voice"-- it reminded me of Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat, Pray, Love." She's funny, honest and insightful. This was actually a page-turner-- not what I would have thought for this type of memoir. I LOVED this book and I'm recommending it to all my friends.
Waiting for Daisy .......2007-09-25
This book was difficult to read. Author was cold, hard to connect with and not easy to agree with. Definitely not like-able or personable. Very selfish individual. I hope she raises Daisy to Not be like her.
Highly recommended for those feeling alone or isolated in their fertility journey!.......2007-09-24
This book was a God-send to me in my own painful infertility journey. Peggy's descriptions of her mental states expressed my own, but in ways I could not put words to. From her initial ambivalence about parenthood, to all-consuming obsessions with achieving it, her relations with her husband, and frustrations with fertility specialists, her journey affirmed that I was not alone in my journey. Her sense of humor and wit actually made me giggle a few times and, mostly, helped me feel so much less alone. I would highly recommend this book!!

As many as one in eight women have a thyroid condition. In Living Well with Hypothyroidism, Mary Shomon outlines the most common of these--too little thyroid hormones in the body. Weight gain, depression, fatigue, and what patients call "brain fog, Brillo hair, and prune skin" result. Because the symptoms of hypothyroidism mimic so many other conditions--chronic fatigue, PMS, clinical depression--it can be very tricky to diagnose, especially since patients with HMOs may not get the thorough testing they need.
Shomon knows of what she speaks: she's a health writer and thyroid patient herself. She also manages a thyroid Web site and writes a newsletter on hypothyroidism. In Living Well, she offers an extensively researched guide to this complex condition. She covers conventional, alternative, and late-breaking approaches to treatment--such as challenging the gold standard of Synthroid as the thyroid replacement therapy of choice. (Synthroid replaces T4, the less active of the two thyroid hormones, and Shomon features new research on adding T3--the more potent thyroid hormone--to treatment.)
With her down-to-earth, patient-centered approach, Shomon explains everything from how to choose a thyroid specialist to how calcium, antidepressants, and a high-fiber diet affect thyroid hormone absorption. The book includes a chapter on depression, which is a typical misdiagnosis of hypothyroidism--as well as a symptom that often persists even after treatment. She also covers infertility (women who are hypothyroid don't ovulate as regularly and miscarry more frequently) and thyroid cancer, one of the less common causes of hypothyroidism. She explains how to spot hypothyroidism in kids, and ends with a glossary, international resources, and journal references.
Shomon creates a sense of community by excerpting e-mails from her vast network of patients--voices that bring a sense of humor so often missing from health books. One quibble: she could have avoided the antidoctor stance in the beginning of her book, where she blames physicians, rather than incomplete science, for the misdiagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism. --Rebecca Taylor

A must have.......2007-09-03
I think this book is great for patients that are undiagnosed. I suspected my sister was hypothyroid like I am but her doctor never tested and had her scheduled for a ton of specialists. I sent her this book and she had a diagnoses within the week. It helped her understand her test results and gave her the confidience to push for thorough testing. The symptom section is great. I prefer Ken Blanchard's book for understanding treatment options.
Great Informational Book.......2007-08-09
I have had hypthryoidism now for 5 fives. This book is so informative. I have referred back to it a million times. The one thing I would like to stress is the fact that doctors only check TSH and/or T4. Somehow, this standard has to change. I asked my doctor to give me a complete test, he refused stating that I only need TSH/T4. Yet I have lost about 1/2 of my hair even though my TSH level is within "normal" limits. I am searching for another doctor who is alittle more open to different approaches. Thanks Mary for the insight!
Great book.......2007-07-23
This is a book that every Hypothyroidism people should have. My suggestion is read this book first before you go to see a doctor. Knowledge you learn form this book will help you in many ways, and many years.

Great Information for arthritis sufferers.......2007-09-02
This author has figured out what causes many cases of arthritis. I have osteoarthritis and have been following her recommendations for about a month now. I can already tell a difference in the way I feel. If I cheat, I can really tell the difference the next day. I recommend this book.
Using The Book.......2007-03-26
Book was very organized and as a result was clear. The format of explanation and then giving a plan of action was excellent. The only thing it needed to be a 5 Star was a little more humor.
Great Book!.......2007-03-26
A different theory at what causes arthritis, written by someone who generally cured herself. Talks a lot about food sensitivities that cause arthritis and how to figure out what your food sensitivity so you can avoid or reduce your expose thus feel better.
The Type of Arthritis the Author Has Should Be Revealed!.......2007-03-13
I think this is a good book, but unfortunately, the author's type of arthritis (allergic) is not related to rheumatoid arthritis, which is what my husband has. So, basically, I wasted my money on a book we cannot use.
a miracle.......2007-01-20
This book and the ideas expressed in it are nothing short of a miracle. I started having my first hints of RA 11 months ago. It took 3 months of rapidly developing pain in most of my joints until I was finally diagnosed. After the devastating news & realization that the heavy drugs I was on were not having much if any effect I started seeking out alternatives on the internet. That is when I ran across the food/arthritis connection & this book - Conquering Arthritis. It has been nothing short of a miracle. After the week detox I could already bend my fingers which was something I thought I would not do again, I was already convinced. The process of healing is a very long & stressful task. Identifying all my problem foods took 4 - 5 months & it seemed like I would never be able to eat a normal meal. It has been well worth it as now I have no pain from RA. This takes complete dedication & I was amazed at how much strength I had as I went though so many struggles emotionally & physically to be pain free. My motivation was thinking about a miserable future where I couldn't walk & enjoy the outdoors which made the alternative, the temporary struggles of the diet, seem like nothing. I can now make relatively normal meals again with just a few substitutions. I know that at this point I am not completely healed but I am well on my way. It has been a year since my first pains. I have come so far & feel so blessed everytime I go out to take a jog or hike. Barbara Allan has been such a blessing and an inspiration. I am so thankful for this book. I encourage anyone with any kind of arthritis to buy it. It is life changing!
Book Description
When Dr. Ray Strand found himself in a losing battle, unable to successfully treat his wife who had suffered chronically with pain and fatigue, he agreed to try the regimen of nutritional supplements that a neighbor suggested. Much to his surprise, his wife's condition began to improve almost immediately. That amazing turn of events led him to dedicate himself to researching alternative therapies in medicine, particularly in the arena of nutritional supplements.
Dr. Strand's illumination of the body's silent enemy-oxidative stress-will astound you. But, more importantly, his research will equip you to protect or reclaim your nutritional health, possibly reversing disease and preventing illness.

Dr Strand's Confessions.......2007-05-17
This book rolls back some of the falacious defensiveness of traditional medical thinking and shows the existing bias against nutritional medicine.
Dr Strand is blunt and forthright about his findings and is careful to give credit to the treatments that were effective, and to identify those that were not. He does not decry pharmaceuticals nor does he promise nutritionals as the end of all cures. Instead, he advocates the use of them in combination when possible. His writing does reveal a competition between pharmaceutically trained physicians and those who dispense and recommend nutritionals.
His case studies are excellent, and he retains a sense of reality and knowledgable insight afforded him by his traditional medical training that has now been tempered by his own experience.
If you want the truth on nutritional medicine, which is sorely lacking in our medical schools who are in some ways subsidized by big pharma, this will please you...and perhaps even make you more healthy.
Awesome read.......2007-05-13
Dr. Strand is absolutely amazing! This book is informative, it will blow your mind. I recommend this to anyone who has ever been to the doctor!
What Your Doctor Does'nt Know About Nutrition Medicine May Be Killing YOU. .......2007-03-14
This book is informative. Makes sense out of everyday occurences in the body and we learn how to help the body work and survive to health. I am sold on taking food supplements for every age. We just can't get all of the nutrients we need by good food alone. Well worth your time in reading.
great book.......2007-03-09
This book is a must read and keep book. There is so much that medical doctors do not know about nutrition---they know medications and disease but physicians have such limited knowledge about prevention and nutrition. (I work in the medical field and see this first hand every day.)

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

MENDELSOHN IS A MAVERICK, BUT DEAD ON CORRECT.......2007-09-29
Some of the most critical life-affecting decisions regarding your child occur while pregnant and during the first moments, months, and years of their lives--nutrition, breast feeding, vaccinations, etc. Too many parents blindly defer to their ObGyns & pediatricians, and are not truly informed about the choices they make. You can get the same tired establishment line about how thimerosal (mercury preservative in vaccines) doesn't cause Autism in children. But, why even inject one of the most toxic substances known to man into our children the first place?
Sure Mendelsohn is a maverick, but you owe it to yourself to know all sides of the issues regarding your children's health.
My wife's ObGyn lives a block away from us. I am a medical researcher. She dismissed my concerns and questions when my wife was pregnant, and adopted the "I'm the pro here and do what I tell you" attitude. We ignored here advice, and designed an nutritional and supplementation schedule based on scientific research.
Our baby was full-term and rated a perfect 10 on the Apgar rating at birth. Her child, born two months after ours, was born weeks premature, underweight, and very, very ill.
An M.D. isn't a license in omnipotence. You owe it to your baby to read this book to get "the other point of view."
A bit outdated........2007-09-02
I think the book was probibly great in 1984 when it was published. I was a bit disappointed about how outdated it was;it suggested giving a teaspoon of Whiskey for fever to an infant. I wish that the publication date was available to view before purchasing the book and if it was, to make it easier to find.
Times sure have changed in the last 23 years. The concepts are good but I think Dr. Mendelsohn needs to update the book and re-release it.
I'm sharing this with all the mothers I know!.......2007-07-03
I purchased this book for two reasons: 1.) I am a mother of two young children who has had bad experiences with a few pediatricians in our pediatric group, and 2.) I work in the mental health field and a lot of the research I do on autism references Dr. Mendeholsohn's book and his position on vaccines.
With my own children, I have often felt disappointed with my well baby visits and have left the doctors office feeling that my doctors didn't really hear what I was saying. This book is so empowering and gives parents the needed information that is not shared with us in most situations. This book has helped me to choose a better doctor for my children and makes me more confident in taking an active role in their health care decisions.
Also, anyone who questions administering vaccinations to their child should read this book. I am utterly shocked that more pediatricians do not share this research with parents! Because this was written in the early 80's, some of the information is slightly outdated but this does not damage the integrity of the book at all. I'm giving copies to all pregnant women I know as well as any other interested parent.
Bought this book in 1985 ...highly recommended reading!.......2007-06-11
I happened to be thinking about when I bought and read this book back in 1985 the year my daughter was born. I can't recall everything in this book this many years later, but I do remember the impact it had on me at the time, as I even wrote to Dr Mendelsohn to thank him for writing this highly informative as well as inspiring book. I was a first time mother and wanted to give my daughter the best start. I feel this book is one every new parent or every parent in general should read and pass along. He was a visionary in retrospect I would imagine, as I was just reading about the plight of parents with children that have autism and the vaccinations..this sparked my memory of this book and how I opted out of these vaccines..and am glad I did. I remember going to one "well baby" clinic when my child was a few months old and the nurse said to me" this is one of the healthiest babies I have ever seen"!!! and she has remained so. Her own friends throughout school always asked why she was hardly ever sick...well, read the book and pay attention to your instincts.
I had a homebirth with a midwife, breastfed until she was two yrs old, did not give her any food or cereal until 6 months, and then made all of her food homemade. I slept in bed with her from the moment she was born, and for the first few years. I did not allow pressure from others to vaccinate, especially with a childs immune system at infancy being so undeveloped. I took to heart the thought of anything that is introduced directly into the bloodstream as is most vaccinations, as opposed to the way we normally contract illnesses, through the mucous membranes. I see how to this day my own child at 22 is healthy and strong and has taken antibiotics maybe a few times in her life. When I was told she had a "slight" ear infection or redness..I would get into the car and crumble up the prescription for the antibiotic... and to this day they are overused.
The bottom line to me is that we should trust in nature and see that illness is not something we have to run to doctors for and get pumped up full of drugs, but to seek out less invasive ways to comfort and treat our children..like with herbs, homeopathics, or just plain rest and lots of loving care.
I see so many children that are sick alot today and are fed poorly, have had a lot of vaccinations, and antibiotics,, cold medicnes, etc..and are "ALWAYS" sick. Many of these children didn't even get the headstart of being breastfed with natures first line of defense for a childs immunities. Let's give this doctor the respect and praise he deserves in giving us this valuable information...and honesty. Not one person knows all there is to know, but we as parents do know our own children...and need to trust that birth, feeding, and the care and wellbeing of our children is a natural process, not one made in a laboratory.
A note: when I went to enroll my daughter in school they told me she could not attend without being vaccinated...so I went and got her at I think 4 yrs old, one shot of the then DPT, but asked to leave out the P pertusis part of it, due to controversies . After the one and only series of shots I found out that if I wrote a note to school saying" due to religious convictions I do not vaccinate my child" it was all I needed for her to continue on straight through high school without.
Proof is in the Pudding.......2007-03-14
This book has been my bible for raising healthy children for the past 18 years and it has never been wrong. None of my brood has been immunized and they are the healthiest kids at school. I birth them at home, even one breech, with ease. I nurse them until them they're toddlers at least and practice what is now called "attachment parenting" that is espoused in the book. It works well and seems so much more natural than what I see more traditional, doctor-led parents go through, much nonsense of which seems to be harmful to their kids instead of good.
I think this book is timeless and still is quite relevant, maybe even more so in our current culture of fear. Parental fear is quite compelling, sometimes leading us to make the wrong choices for our children, and this book helps to keep the fears in check.
Honoring the body's ability to heal itself without the need for drugs; shunning invasive unnecessary procedures like circumcision (none of my boys are circumcised and most of their friends aren't either), ear tubes and tonsillectomies; breastfeeding and putting off solid foods until later; letting fevers run their course naturally; even mostly avoiding hospitals and doctors including well child checkups; has worked so well for us that our kids are considered a phenomenon as am I who just birthed my latest at age 46 -- at home in water.
Read this book and heed its advice. This now-deceased doctor knew what he was talking about and his wisdom is timeless, drawing on medical common sense and trusting the body to heal itself in most circumstances. The book will save you unneeded trips to the hospital and doctor and also a LOT of worry.

Are you a woman between 35 and 50 experiencing PMS, migraine headaches, sudden weight gain, fatigue, irritability, tender or lumpy breasts, memory loss, fibroids, or cold hands and feet? If so, you may be experiencing symptoms of premenopause. Even if you're a decade or more away from menopause, your hormones may already be out of balance, usually caused by an excess of estrogen and a deficiency of progesterone, say the authors of What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Premenopause. John Lee, M.D., is a well-known advocate of the benefits of natural progesterone and the author of What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause. Jesse Hanley, M.D., adds sensitivity to the emotional and spiritual aspects of premenopause. The authors recommend natural progesterone cream to balance your hormones, eliminate premenopausal symptoms, and make you feel better. They also discuss the dangers of xenohormones--substances not found in nature that have hormonal effects--frequently found in pesticides, solvents, plastics, and hormone-treated meat. The book presents common symptoms of premenopause with suggested natural treatments (progesterone cream, diet, vitamins, and herbs) and substances to avoid, plus additional chapters on diet and exercise. Many case studies help to bring the information into perspective. If you are premenopausal (or close to someone who is), this is a valuable resource. --Joan Price

The subtitle is more pertinent: Balance Your Hormones and Your Life from Thirty to Fifty.......2006-02-24
I found this book to be very informative. It really focuses on how your body needs and uses hormones. It addresses the years 30 - 50. There is a big difference between "Premenopause" and "Perimenopause". Pre simply means the years before you reach the point of menopause. It explains how you can balance your hormones and the dangers of too much estrogen vs. progesterone. It was surprising to me just how important it is to balance your hormones. It has helped me tremendously.
Very Good Resource.......2006-01-15
I have read most of Dr Lee's books and all have been very helpful and I found much of the information to be accurate. Anyone replacing or supplementing hormones should have their levels checked and Dr Lee states this clearly in all his books. I have adrenal insufficiency, Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroid disease, irritable bowel disease, and myofascial pain syndrome. I take physiologic doses of most of the major hormones, the bioidentical form. I have also read numerous other books on hormones by other authors, many have something to offer to the reader. I use a bioidentical progesterone cream prepared by a compounding pharmacy and it makes me feel much better. I use it at night and it aids my sleep and raises my body temperature. It is an overall mood elevator for me.
I found many of the comments made by the readers with unfavorable reviews inaccurate, I think they are not careful readers. Dr Lee addresses many of their complaints. For example when first using progesterone cream symptoms of estrogen excess can be amplified. He also notes the symptoms of excess progesterone and recommends that hormone levels should be tested and even tells you where you can have a saliva test done on your own.
I have had my hormone levels measured through serum and saliva and have found that it depends upon which hormone is being tested as to the correlation between the two tests.(THyroid hormone cannot be measured in saliva) The problem with blood work is that especially for hormones which must be carried through the blood by a protein carrier the amount measured is the total amount of the hormone ( bound and unbound) and is not available for use by the body. Only the unbound amount or 'free' hormone is biologically active. Thyroid and testoserone can be measured as Free T4, Free T3 and Free Testosterone. These test are more expensive and often doctors do not order them unless you ask for them. He explains this in his book.
Dr Lee's book on Breast Cancer is a must read for all women simply for the information it presents on bone scans and the role and function of estrogen. All of the information is not up to date however but it is a good starting point. Tumors in breast tissue can be responsive to both estrogen and progesterone and sometimes to both. There is no easy answer.
The doctor does not do much discussion of thyroid function and that is a shame because it is often the smoking gun behind most autoimmune diseases and endocrine dysfunctions. There are many good books out there, but a book is not going to diagnose you. Anyone looking for information should start by looking up the studies cited by the authors in their books and reading some of them, or do a google. I obtain much of my information from the internet, do a search and often several Medline articles will turn up.
For anyone who is having difficulty being diagnosed or finding a doctor willing to listen I highly recommend the Broda O Barnes Foundation. Go to their website and contact them. They are an endocrine research foundation. They were able to diagnose me and literally gave me my life back. I cannot say enough about them.
For other reading I would recommend:
Adrenal dysfunction- Dr McK Jeffries Safe Uses of Cortisol
Thyroid Disease- Dr Barnes- Hypothyroidism the Unsuspected Illness
Ridha Arem- The Thyroid Solution- but discount his information on which thyroid medication to take, he is clearly biased toward synthroid, however his descriptions of the psychological manifestations are very good.
Dr David Brownstein- Overcoming Thyroid Disorders
Dr David Brwonstein- The Miracle of Natural Hormones- both books give good information on bioidentical hormones and reference levels along with case studies
Overall Health
Dr Carolyn Dean- The Miracle of Magnesium--very easy to read and good book, I take a high dose of magnesium daily and my doctor monitors my magnesium in red blood cell, it has really helped improve my irritable bowel
Dr Mary Enig- Know Your Fats-Excellent book on lipid(fats), explains saturated and unsaturated, trans, where they are found, the composition of each. It can be a little technical but for those who want to take charge of their health this is a must.

Autoimmune diseases affect 50 million Americans, mostly women, who frequently remain undiagnosed and untreated, or are treated ineffectively. Living Well with Autoimmune Disease helps readers pinpoint symptoms, find the right practitioner, and learn cutting-edge approaches to reduce symptoms and reverse their disease.
Author Mary Shomon, who has the immune disease Hashimoto's thyroiditis, explains how the immune system is supposed to work, and what can go wrong. Then she discusses more than 20 specific autoimmune diseases--such as chronic fatigue syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, lupus, thyroid disease, Graves' disease, rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, fibromyalgia, scleroderma, and multiple sclerosis. For each, she covers symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.
Shomon, a patient advocate and Web guide for people with thyroid disease, hears the most success stories from people who combine conventional treatment with complementary therapies, so she gives specific strategies for using herbs, diet, and mind/body therapies. She also includes a 30-page checklist of risk factors and symptoms (helpful when you have no idea what condition you might have), a guide to finding and working with the right practitioner, and an extensive resources section that includes patient support organizations, Web sites, and books. --Joan Price
Book Description
A complete guide to understanding the mysterious and often difficult–to–pinpoint disorders of the immune system––and finding the keys to diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.
An estimated fifty million people suffer from symptoms including fatigue, joint pains, depression, or heart palpitations 埳igns that the immune system has turned on itself, causing conditions such as thyroid disease, hepatitis, or multiple sclerosis. And while doctors may prescribe treatments to relieve these surface ailments, when asked about the life–long health implications of an autoimmune condition, they often just shrug their shoulders. Yet much like cancer, having one autoimmune disease puts you at high risk for developing another, and understanding the underlying immune process can reverse a patients approach to a dysfunction––for the author, it changed the way she ate, the vitamins and supplements she took, and the types of doctors she visited. Living Well with Autoimmune Disease is the first book that goes beyond the conventional treatments by showing you how to work on your underlying autoimmune dysfunction with natural and alternative therapies.

Patient-friendly book.......2007-09-09
This is a very helpful book for the millions of people dealing with autoimmune diseases. Shomon does an excellent job of identifying the many different types of autoimmune diseases and their symptoms. She offers many traditional treatments as well as more holistic options. Most importantly, she lets you know that if you have one autoimmune disease, you have a much greater chance of contracting another. I learned far more from this book than I did at doctor appointments.
This has been the best book I have read so far............2007-08-26
This was the most informative book that I have read. I have had fibromyalgia for several years and have had to learn on my own alot of the information that was contained in this one book...a must have for any new autoimmune sufferer.
GREAT READ ! GREAT INFO !
Review of Living Well with Autoimmune Disease:What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You.......2007-06-13
This is a very informative book. It is well worth keeping on hand for referral. It describes many autoimmune diseases and tells, in many cases, how they are connected. It also tells, whenever possible, how these diseases may get started, what their symptoms are, and how they are treated. Since much of this information is very new to the general public, the book may be of great help to people searching for answers to their own medical problems.
Lacking in Facts / Full of Myth.......2007-05-28
The reason the doctor doesn't tell you: it isn't true.
This book contains a lot of information for the average patient, and it SOUNDS logical. Unfortunately, only about half of it is based on science. In a world where those desparate for solutions are easy prey for snake-oil salesmen and fearmongers, this book leads right to them.
Most of the information of value in the book can be found in simple one-page summaries that many organizations provide (including the NIH and CDC). It lacks anything truly informative and the time reading it is wasted.

A good start for basic information on a wide variety of autoimmune diseases.

Most of the information is a rehash of conventional mainstream thinking...which is often incorrect. i.e. dairy is great source of calcium. While technically correct, this source of calcium is not readily absorbed in the body. The author actually encourages a 50% carbohydrate diet for diabetics!

This book is simply the best. It is categorized by food items. It is not technical. For example, you want to find out if grapes are good for you and why. you go to grapes. A quick summary tells you what grapes are good for in plain english, like reduce chol. lower blood pressue and so on. Then you can read more about that food item. There are kitchen recommendations of how to get the best of that food item.
All in plain english.
I highly recommend it.

Book Description
A groundbreaking, proven approach for successfully dia--gnosing and treating the mil-lions with hypothyroidism. Depression, weight gain, fatigue, headaches, memory lapses, hair loss-these are just some of the vague, often debilitating symptoms that plaguethe more than 13 million patients with hypothyroidism. The typical blood test for diagnosis is often inaccurate, leaving many to suffer through ineffective treatment. But now, there is a solution: Dr. Blanchard's groundbreaking program draws on emerging research, medical facts, and three decades of clinical experiences as an endocrinologist. This individualized program uses questionnaires and charts to help diagnose sufferers through symptoms, not only lab results. It then treats patients of all ages with the safe but little used T3 hormone in combination with the more common T4 hormone. Also including specific nutritional advice and alternative treatments, this is the one program for sufferers of hypothyrodism that really works!

Depression, fatigue, headaches, memory lapses, weight gain, constipation, cold intolerance, slowed reflexes, hair loss, menstrual abnormalities—these are some of the vague, sometimes debilitating symptoms that, in varying combinations, plague more than 13 million patients with hypothyroidism. Unfortunately, many patients with hypothyroidism go for months to years, from doctor to doctor, from test to tests without being properly diagnosed. This is because the TSH blood test, considered the gold standard for diagnosis, is simply not an accurate indicator of hypothryoidism. Perhaps more perplexing, millions who are properly diagnosed find themselves undergoing often ineffective treatments for their disorder. At last, there is a solution: Dr. Blanchard's groundbreaking treatment program draws on emerging research, medical facts, and three decades of clinical experiences as an endocrinologist. It's an individualized program that uses questionnaires and charts to help diagnose sufferers through symptoms, not lab results, and treats patients of all ages with the safe, but little used T3 hormone in the best combination with the more common T4 hormone, as well as with specific nutritional advice and alternative treatments that really work!
Customer Reviews:
Missing Some Important Information.......2007-09-10
Dr. Blanchard has some good ideas about how to balance T4 and T3, but the book was
lacking information I had hoped it would contain. The human thyroid actually produces
10% T3, and 90% T4 -- so I'm not quite sure why Dr. Blanchard arrived at the 2%
solution -- perhaps most of his patients still have functioning thyroids, but functioning
at a lower than normal level.
There is almost no discussion of patients who have NON-functioning
thyroid glands, thyroidectomies, or myxedema. As a patient with a non-functioning
thyroid, and also having experienced myxedema due to lack of adequate medication, I found
this book was not very useful. There was no discussion of a full physiological replacement
dosage. I am unfortunately familiar with the symptoms of myxedema, and aware than incompetent
physicians are capable of inducing myxedema in a severely hypothyroid patient by relying on the
TSH test and underdosing the patient.
Also, I would like to have seen more discussion on the MANY types of thyroid
antibodies, and how these can affect the type of medication and dosage a
patient needs to feel well. I would also like to have read a discussion on why
some people need a higher than normal dosage to feel well -- due to poor stomach
absorption, thyroid resistance, anemia, etc. For reasons not well understood, other individuals
do not adequately convert T4 to T3 in their bodies; thus they require high amounts
of T3. There was no discussion on this point, either.
Something I had expected in the book (from other reviews) was a discussion of the physical
symptoms of inadequate or excessive T4, and T3 levels. Instead, the reader was
referred to the blood test again.
So for those patients with severe hypothyroidism, or non-functioning glands, you're still
on your own to figure out the best treatment regimen. The 2% T3 plan is
just too simple, and this book offers no explanation of what a full physiological
replacement dosage should be.
Great Resource.......2007-09-03
Geared toward helping you get the most out of your thyroid treatment. Best for people already diagnosed.
Balancing T3 and T4.......2007-06-04
This book is quite good, really focuses on learning to balance T3/T4 not only with lab tests but also based on how you FEEL regardless of what the labs say. Very interesting read.
Another great book for Thyroid.......2007-05-09
Read this along with Mary Shomons book and you are on your way to learning what you need to know to manage your thyroid disease. I was shocked at what I didn't know after being ill for years. Read it, re-read it and memorize it. Then ask your dr. questions. You can control your disease and symptoms if you have the knowledge needed.
Outstanding.......2007-02-15
I just what to say thanks for writing the book. I learned a lot about hypothroidism. I'v had it for 10 years. I never new about T3 free. Now I have read more books on thryroid problems. This one is the best. It really tells it like it is. Great information, and what you need to do to get better. All I can say is just read it you will be surprised.
