A useful text for western students.......2005-11-08
Traditionally, ayurveda has been taught orally, with reference to ancient texts like the works of Charaka, Sushruta and Vagbhata; references that are still used today. These writings, which are believed to date thousands of years, contain the eternal and universal principles of the natural science of ayurveda; however they also contain therapies and lifestyle prescriptions which are hopelessly archaic; and materia medica which are no longer accessible (e.g. opium and camel's urine!). With the spread of ayurveda to the West, there emerged a great need for a text that not only catered to the western mode of thinking and education, but that also made connections between the ayurvedic view of anatomy and physiology, and that of the West. This book attempts to do just that.
Dr.Vasant Lad is in the forefront of Vaidyas (ayurvedic practitioners) who have made ayurvedic education available to the West. He started teaching ayurveda in the USA in 1980, and has produced many prominent writers and educators on the subject. His previous books include the popular Ayurveda; The Science of Self-Healing; and The Yoga of Herbs, co-written with Dr. David Frawley, a groundbreaking book introducing the concepts of ayurvedic herbology to the western public.
This Textbook of Ayurveda comes as more in-depth ayurvedic education programmes develop in the West. It contains the necessary foundation for the understanding of a medical model far removed from the western allopathic paradigm. To understand and practise ayurveda, one literally needs to adopt, to immerse oneself in, a completely different perspective. Dr.Lad's book contains chapters on the Six Philosophies which underpin ayurveda, from the unthinkably ancient Sankhya philosophy of creation, which also forms the basis of Buddhism and some aspects of Yoga; to the Nyaya science of logic; to Yoga itself, the profound science of psychology and human potential.
Then we explore the system of 20 qualities of nature; the five elements; the three humours (Doshas) and their 15 subtypes; the concept of Agni or Digestive Fire; the Dhatus or body tissues; the Srotas or body channels; Ojas, Tejas, and Prana or the subtle humours; and Digestion and Nutrition. Each aspect is explained and related back to western anatomy, physiology and pathology. The important connection is also made between each aspect and the mind, which in ayurveda is considered a distinct but interdependent part of the body. There are copious appendices and tables on the various systems, ayurvedic properties of food, and other useful information.
A notable feature is the high quality of production. This is refreshing - and I would say necessary, if ayurvedic education is to be taken seriously by mainstream medicine. To be frank, I am fed up of poorly written, edited, designed and produced books from India. Even so-called textbooks are appallingly arranged, sometimes with no indexes or useful means of finding information. This book is clearly illustrated with line drawings, attractively designed, and printed on good paper. Two of the book's editors are ayurveda and Sanskrt instructors in New Zealand. If such talents were used more often in the editing and production of ayurvedic books, the credibility and reputation of ayurvedic education and publications would no doubt increase.
But does the book really deliver the goods? In my opinion, a lot of the correlations with western anatomy and physiology are speculative, and Dr.Lad should admit they are so. A lot of the material, while interesting, is simply not standard ayurvedic training, traditional or otherwise - and therefore misleading. If, instead of trying to pass off these wishy-washy correlations, Dr.Lad had worked on better translating and elucidating the traditional texts and principles, I believe the book would have more usefully served the growing interest in ayurveda as a clinical medical system. I feel that, while the book is insufficiently academic and credible for serious students of ayurveda, it still serves as a good introduction for the intelligent western reader.
A "Complete Guide".......2003-07-18
I've recently purchased several ayurvedic books and will be returning most of them now. This book has everything. I MUST have. It is very thorough and extremely interesting. Not just a rehashing of information found elsewhere. If you only have one book - get this one!
A must have for the Ayurvedic student!.......2003-01-05
Thank you Vasant Lad for this great tool that helps one unlock the truth called Ayurveda. Vasant Lad has presented a true text book that will become a companion of the modern day Ayurvedic student. Normally if one was to source concise information on the fundamentals of Ayurveda then one had the difficult task of studying the translations of Caraka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Vagbhata Samhita. While these texts are the foundation for modern Ayurveda they can be daunting to the student new to this amazing science. The only other method was to correlate information from books written by Vasant Lad, David Frawley, Atreya, Robert Svoboda, Subhash Ranade, Maya Tiwari etc.... and then one would build up a collection of information from different sources. Whilst this is not a bad thing (and I will continue to read books offered from these great teachers) finding enough detailed information was sometimes very hard. "The Text Book of Ayurveda: Fundamental Principles" is truly amazing. It is a must for the serious student of Ayurveda. Vasant Lad has indicated that this if the first of three, the next two dealing with; the clinical assessment of health and disease, and the management of disease. The contents of this book is vast, it covers all aspects of the philosophical foundation that Ayurveda stands upon, The Tridosha, Agni, The Seven Dhatu, The Fifteen Srotas, Ojas, Tejas, Prana, Digestion and Nutrition, to be honest this does no justice to what is actually in this textbook. Get it!

One of the best on Ayruveda.......2007-09-03
Being relatively new to Ayruveda lifestyle, I am reading as much as I can. This book is a wealth of information and easy to understand. Vasant Lad is very well known in the field. If you are interested in how Ayruvedic can heal, this is the one to read. Highly Recommended.
An Excellent Referece.......2007-08-08
I heard about this book through my relative and had a cursory look at a copy he already had and was immediately impressed with the book. Dr.Lad has detailed all the ailments that we get and simple home remedies for all of them. The book not only speaks about ayurvedic home remedies but also on how leading a clean life with good habits and maintaining a good discipline can help us lead a happy and a healthy life.
Informative Ayurvedic Info.......2007-03-09
A very informative read! Recommend for anyone with an interest in ancient medicine and health. Also recommend for anyone interested in yoga. A great companion for yoga and a healthy lifestyle.
Useful book to have handy.......2007-02-17
I really like this book! I like that it not only has information on Ayurveda in general, but also an "encyclopedia" of remedies. We've used many of the remedies with success and refer to it before other sources when there is a problem.
The only drawback to this book are the recommendations for herbs that are common in India but not so easy to get elsewhere. I can't locate many much less pronounce them. Hopefully I will find a resource for purchasing them so I can try out their effectiveness.
Definitely a book worth purchasing and keeping close at-hand.
Home relief.......2007-01-03
Useful book to learn how to heal oneself with spices and food stuff from the kitchen's shelves .
Off course it doesn't replace medical advice ,but helps for everyday troubles such as cold ,tiredness and so .

Standard Indian vegetarian recipes !.......2007-10-03
I was so impressed by Vasant Lad's "Complete Ayurvedic Home Remedies" book, I wanted to check out this book to incorporate Ayurvedic cooking. I was disappointed after I received and reviewed the book. This is a standard south Indian vegetarian cook book with an introduction to Ayurveda. So, if you are an Indian you might know most if not all of the recipes already. Even if you are not from India and want to learn ayurvedic style Indian vegetarian cooking, there are a dozen other cooking books which might be better than this. The recipes are not in detail, they are all very short. You have to go through some trial and error to perfect these recipes in my opinion.
excellent.......2007-08-23
Another great book from Dr. Lad. His books are so informative and helpful and really produce dramatic results. Although mostly foods that are not usual, the recipes are simple and the soups and the rice dishes are tasty.
Top quality reference for Ayurvedic diets.......2007-08-11
I found this book to be well written and clear. As someone who is new to Ayurveda with a healing need, I have been looking for several books dealing with the same topics...in this case, how to modify one's diet to reach better balance physically, emotionally and spiritually. The content expanded and re-inforced principles I found in other Ayurvedic cookbooks. I felt I have gotten a better sense of how to use various types of foods and seasonings through this book. Highly recommended!
Wonderful ayurveda book but just average cookbook........2006-09-29
I was excited to get this book. Read it attentively and tried two of the recipies. Kitchari for Vata and Spicy Vegetable Fried Rice. The explaination by Vasant Lad was good and detail. I like it very much. As for the recipies, they smells superb but are tasteless. I still recomend this book for those who like to learn to cook a ayurvedic balanced food. But if you are looking into cooking a delicious mouth watering meal. This is not the book. Still an excellent ayurvedic book.
Sometimes the recipes need modification.......2006-07-31
My main complaint is that some of the recipes create absolute mush. I found that it helped if I reduced the water in some of the recipes (for example for Kitchari, I used 5 cups of water instead of the recommended 6 cups) and/or washing/soaking the rice or beans only briefly instead of overnight. This may be because I live at sea level (?) but some of the recipes seemed to err in favor of cooking too long in too much water.
A more minor complaint is that I like the recipes I've tried and want more- and more variety. An even more minor complaint is that since I find the fried foods irrelevant to me, I would have preferred if they had substituted other recipes that didn't include lots of oil.

Great source for herbs.......2005-02-26
My copy is older (1986). I imagine there is a new and updated version out.
It is co-written by Dr. Vasant Lad. Dr. Lad is the administrator at the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, NM.
I have gotten much use out of this book. It is based on the ayurvedic medical tradition. Herbs, American, European and Oriental are all described and assessed according to the ayurvedic principals. There are first aid treatments, English and Sanskrit glossaries and Latin appendix.
Ayurveda can be confusing to people who have little or no background in it. The descriptions in this book are simple and easy to understand. Connecting the herbs and their properties is easy with the charts and information included. There is an excellent chapter on `how to prepare and use herbs according to Ayurveda'.
This book is an excellent primer on using herbal remedies in the Ayurvedic tradition and also an excellent sourcebook on regular herbal usage. Even if you don't ascribe to Ayurveda the information on the herbs is very useful
The best herb book i've ever read........2004-05-19
This is the best, bar none. It goes into detail with each herb, telling us the energetics of the herbs, in terms of ayurveda-the oldest system of popular standardized medicine in the world. Ayurveda literally means science of life. There is indepth information on the physical and psychological effects of each herb. It even tells you how the herbs relate to the chakras. Dr. Vasant Lad is the countrys' leading authority on Ayurveda (besides Deepak Chopra)and he got together with David Frawley-a very learned Vedic scholar to write this book. Together they make magic happen. This book is more than worth the money .
Excellent Resource.......2004-02-17
An excellent guide to Ayurvedic medical applications of herbs. This book includes a good introduction to Ayurvedic principles, management of the doshas and good summary charts for over 270 as well as detailed sections on 108 of the most common herbs and special Oriental herbs. Invaluable for the herbalist interested in Ayurveda.

Customer Reviews:
Lacks depth.......2006-07-08
I bought the book because the table of contents showed that the book covered the topics comprehensively. However, there is a serious lack of depth. I think the book is good for students who are just learning about linux and embedded systems, but not as useful for the more serious and experienced developer.
Informative and useful.......2006-01-02
I take this opportunity to congratulate authors on the job WELL DONE. This book emphasizes on "programming" aspect of embedded Linux which is missing from earlier books like one from karim yaghmour. The topics such as MTD, real time, embedded graphics, uclinux are presented very clearly and in detailed manner. Overall, it's GOOD.

The accompanying disk contains all programming examples found in the book - and even a few extra examples - as archived block libraries. After retrieving the archives in STEP 7, the examples can be viewed, copied to projects and tested in LAD and FBD.
Customer Reviews:
Highly useable.......2003-04-25
Anyone involved with exploring the world of Step7 would do well with this book.
I have been involved with PLC technology since 1979 and even today there are too few available reference manuals.
Franky I am disappointed with the Step 7 products particularly the software. I find it primitive in many ways and much more difficult to use than it needs to be.
Programmers should spend their time solving automation problems not struggling with the intracacies and peculiarities of the platform.
If you program with Step 7 or plan to, this book will save you a lot of headaches since little in Step 7 is as intuitive as Allen Bradley or Modicon.
Book Description
For the first time a book is available which clearly explains the principles and practical applications of Ayurveda, the oldest healing system in the world. This beautifully illustrated text thoroughly explains history & philosophy, basic principles, diagnostic techniques, treatment, diet, medicinal usage of kitchen herbs & spices, first aid, food aid, food antidotes and much more.

A definitive reference book on Ayurveda.......2006-12-31
This book is the definitive reference book on Ayurveda. You will refer to it, time and time again.
Great Introduction to Ayurveda.......2006-07-27
This book was a clear yet comprehensive introduction to a very complex system of medicine with which I had had no previous experience. It was very helpful.
A basic book .......2006-06-16
This is a basic book on Ayurveda, giving a great overview on its basic principles. Anyone intersted on this subject should read it, and it is very suitable for beginners.
excellent book.......2003-05-06
I had the privilage of being treated by Dr. Lad as well as going to several clases he gives at the Ayurvedic institute in Albuquerque NM. The book is a wonderful aid in trying to understand and identify health and disease. You have to be able to understand that "western" medicine is not the answer for everything and that in many cases it will eventually make you even sicker. What do you prefer, Prozac or a cup of some herbal tea that will eventually help you with depression?. What do you prefer, a cup of chamomile tea along with jatamansi or Pepto Bismol?. Ayurveda is something very real, helpful and extremely cheap. Hmmmm..... just wondering why allopacy wants to destroy alternative methods. Even better, is Ayurveda really an alternative treatment? 3,000 years before Jesus Ayurveda was being practiced...so, just wondering who's really alternative. Give it a try, Vasant Lad is a great humble and loving person.
Mad Medicine!.......2001-03-11
This was my first introduction to Ayurveda despite studying yoga for several years. I cannot judge how faithful the instructions in this book are to true Ayurvedic medicine; regardless of that, this book makes some strange and potentially hazardous medical recommendations. Pages 143-144 recommend taking the heavy metal mercury to "enkindle the enzyme system...and regenerate the tissues." Page 143 recommends lead as a cure for several disorders including skin diseases and venereal disease. Neither of these recommendations are accompanied by a warning that modern medicine has clearly identified these two metals as being toxic to humans. While these metals are promoted without warnings about their toxicity, the author warns readers about the dangers of vitamin intake. On page 87, the author claims that overpresciption of vitamins to patients by Western physicians may cause them to suffer from "hypervitaminosis." Page 140 makes great claims about the curative powers of onions. It claims that when used as a nasal inhalant or as eye drops they will relieve acute epileptic seizures, reduce cholesterol, and serve as a heart tonic. Ouch...that stings even just thinking about it. If the preceeding prescriptions haven't deterred you from subscribing to this book's recommendations, then the following might. Pages 42-44 suggest drinking a cup of your own urine each morning in order to cleanse and detoxify your large colon.

Imbalances and potential disease states can be detected in their early stages, giving one the opportunity to correct them before they affect the quality of life.
