Super Size, Super Special Majestic Old World Look.......2007-04-18
I bought three of this journal to bring through a book in the set and I was really taken back with the size of the journal - it's huge! It's about the size of musical sheet music.
The closure that looks like black wrought iron is actually a hard flexible material that automatically snaps in place to keep the book closed - it's really beautiful!
The blank cream color paper is of top quality and on this journal the pages have a gold foil at the bottom of the journal. It does not need that on the sides, because the journal would be closed.
If you love to write, sketch, draw and want a LARGE classic majestic looking journal that just looks breathtaking on any book shelf this is the one to get.
If what you are writing or drawing has great meaning to you, then it deserves to be protected in this beautiful journal. Really gorgeous!

This is the most beautiful book I have ever owned! I love to write whether it is journaling or playing around with Poetry or Short Stories...
I am so inspired just by the book itself! It is a magical book to hold and look at! I'm serious! I first was sceptical to purchase it because it is pricy for a blank sketch or writing book, but it is worth every cent! I will be purchasing more books to create a collection of Poetry and Stories that I feel my family will be able to treasure because of this truely Beautiful Book! I love the magnetic closure strap also! The book has the appearance of an antique treasure book. It is a great keepsake for journals or diarys.

Book Description
When Dwayne Burns turned 18 during World War II, he decided that he wanted to fight alongside America's best. He joined the paratroopers and was assigned to the 508th Regiment of the 82d Airborne Division. Little did he suspect that a year later he'd be soaring in a flak-riddled C-47 over Normandy, part of the very spearhead of the Allied drive to seize back Europe. Burns landed behind German lines during the dark, early hours of D-day, and gradually found other survivors of his division. The paratroopers fought on every side in a confused, running battle through the hedgerows, finally making a stand in a surrounded farmhouse. With one room reserved for their growing piles of corpses, the paratroopers held their ground until finally relieved by infantry advancing from the beaches. After being pulled out of Normandy, the airborne troops were said to be "burning a hole in SHAEF's pocket," and thus were launched into Holland as part of Montgomery's plan to gain a bridgehead across the Rhine. This daytime jump was less confused than the nocturnal one, but there were more Germans than expected and fewer Allied forces in support. It was another maelstrom of pointblank combat in all directions, and though the 82d achieved its objectives, the campaign as a whole achieved little but casualties. The 82d had hardly refilled with replacements when the Germans broke through the U.S. front in the Ardennes. The 82d's paratroopers were put aboard trucks and hastened to stand in the way of the panzer onslaught. Passing through Bastogne they went farther north to St. Vith, where the U.S. 7th Armored and other divisions were reeling. The 82nd held its own with quickly assembled defense perimeters, allowing other units to escape. After beating off massive attacks by German SS, the paratroopers were disgusted to hear that they, too, had been ordered to retreat. They didn't feel they needed to, but Monty was determined to "tidy up the battlefield." On January 3 they counterattacked through the freezing hills, sealing off the Bulge and pursuing the Germans back into the Reich.. In this work, Dwayne Burns, assisted by his son Leland (U.S. Army, 1975-79), not only relates the chaos of combat but the intimate thinking of a young soldier thrust into the center of several of history's greatest battles. His memories provide a fascinating insight into the reality of close-quarters combat. REVIEWS " I was glad to see this book. There has been a lot written about the 101st in recent years and their defense at Bastogne including 'Band of Brothers,' the movie 'Battleground' and a bunch more. Much less well known is the action of the 82nd to hold the north shoulder and prevent the Germans from having more roads to use for their advance. Burns was there. He doesn't tell the big picture - there are a lot of books on the Battle of the Bulge. He tells his story from the bottom side. It looked different from a foxhole. The book is told in the form of a bunch of little stories, not a day by day diary. This makes it much more interesting, and I recommend it highly. Books-On-Line 2-3-2007 "... Sadly DWAYNE passed away just hours before the full account went to press. The BURNS team produced a book that keeps the reader's interested from cover to cover... As you read Jump into the Valley of the Shadow, a prominent theme, the Brotherhood of the paratroopers, is apparent and runs through the whole book: You will notice their concern for each other and their grief over their fallen comrades. Another theme of the book is the importance of Leadership. "The Static Line February 2007 ZIG BOROUGHS "Destined to Become a Classic World War II Memoir...e a masterful job of taking the reader along on a compelling journey...It is war, as seen from the foxhole and is destined to become a classic World War II memoir."Phil Nordyke (philnordyke@allamerican82nd.com), A reviewer, 06/16/2007

Perfect first hand account of the 82nd.......2007-07-12
After the world wide attention for the 101st this is a welcome addition to airborne warfare in WWII
great book by an honored veteran.......2007-07-06
This is a very well written book b y a man who was there. Telling the personal story of Leland Burns' travels thru F Co of the 508PIR, Jump Into the Valley of the Shadow is a fine read. Factual and well thought out, it goes thru the gritty days of fighting that only a man who has lived thru it can tell you. But it also goes over the softer, more human side of his time overseas in an in-depth and honest way.
From his personal accounts of his courtship with his wife, to his time in England with both new and old friends, the book is made better by the fact that these are all REAL people that actually existed (and in many cases are still living) that makes this a truly special book to have.
A Book from the 82nd........2007-02-04
This book starts out with the author staring out the open door of a C-47 on the night of June 5, 1944 and realizing that it was now too late to join the motor pool or become a cook. Like a lot of other youngsters, when he was drafted into the Army he decided that he wanted to be with America's best, and that was the paratroopers.
I was glad to see this boook.
DIABLO!!! All the way!!!.......2007-01-07
OK! This is one man's story about the "Oh Eight" the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment (P.I.R.), 2nd Bn, Fox Co. Mr Burns jumped into France, Operation Neptune (D-Day) and Market-Garden (Holland) two jump stars earned the hard way. There are a lot of "soldiers stories" in the book, being with your buddies, goofing off, military life, as well as the stories about combat. Books like these put a human face on anonymous mens faces of black and white photos taken 60+ years ago. It shows they were pretty much the same as most young men, full of life and hopes and dreams, except their lives were forged in the fires of the Depression. It is a good read and a page turner, there are "flashback" type parts of the book, that may disagree with some readers. But I was most humbled and impressed by his story and the stories of other men I have met, ironically from Easy Co. 508th PIR, Mr Burns' sister Co to his own Fox Co. I am glad some of these men have told their story, because too many never have or got the chance to live long enough to. Thier story is told by rows of silent crosses in France, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Germany, and a thousand other lonely places where American boys fought and died. Read this book if you want to know the story of one man's journey through a pivotal time in human history.
Outstanding and Riveting Memories from Training to Combat.......2006-12-17
I highly recommend this book. Dwayne Burns brings to life his memories from elite training as a paratrooper to his feelings and emotions of actually going into combat. Along the way, he shares his personal life stories and how all of this shaped the person he was to became. The incredible bond that paratroopers have which started in their training and lasts to this day is very inspiring. Reading this book reinforced my genuine thanks to these men that "Jumped Into the Valley of the Shadow" along with the rest of the "Greatest Generation" that helped bring peace back to this world in the uncertain time of WWII.
Book Description
The Shadow of God is part memoir, part spiritual autobiography, and part tour of great works of art, literature, and music. In the form of a journal written over the course of a year, Charles Scribner shares childhood recollections of a household where figures like Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald were family friends. He tells stories from his own noteworthy publishing career, from his journey toward faith, and from his deep knowledge of Baroque art.
Born an Episcopalian, he charts the story of his interior life and the importance of the arts in helping him choose the spiritual, emotional, and intellectual paths he would follow, including his Catholic conversion. He asks himself questions like “How far back can we trace the roots of faith?” Scribner writes with contagious enthusiasm about the pivotal truths he discovered in the novels of Graham Greene and Evelyn Waugh and the inspiration he found in art, music, opera, and the Bible.
The Shadow of God is a journey through memory, art, and faith that shaped Scribner’s year as it passed through the seasons, from Epiphany to Epiphany. It is a moving portrait of a man who has devoted his life to words and the Word and a work of rare power by a writer whose grace, humor, and candor will touch readers.

Light that is the Shadow of God.......2006-09-12
Charles Scribner III takes his faith seriously but, in the manner of a saint he admires, always with wit and grace. It is a delight to accompany him on the spiritual journey that he so beautifully describes in "The Shadow of God."
On one occasion, Mr. Scribner tells of walking down Fifth Avenue and pausing to watch workmen dismantle the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. He links the abrupt end of the commercial holiday to the rhythms of a church that is always slightly apart from the secular world around it. The author seems unable or unwilling to accept this "disconnect" between the spiritual and the mundane. Indeed, he sees God's presence everywhere -- in lofty cathedrals or hideous parish churches, in his schoolmates or strangers. He has found a way to unite his faith with the thousands of tiny events that make life what it is.
The title of this book is taken from a Latin expression that his father entrusted to him -- Lux Umbra Dei. It not simply the shadow of God but light that is the shadow of God. And this book is filled with light.
A Beautiful and Important Book.......2006-06-21
The notion that a life of privilege is somehow a strike against an author's ability to tell a powerfully insightful story is ridiculous and would damn a whole literature of such books if true. Marcus Aurelius would have nothing to say to us. Nor would Proust.
Scribner writes from what he knows and in doing so goes deep into the universal experience that unites everyone. His writing is refined --and if this refinement suggests a bygone era, it does well to remind us of the measured grace that we have misplaced in the discourse of our own time. "Stately" does not mean staid in this book.
The book is a primer for many who may have forgotten that unfevered reflection is profitable for the human spirit and the close proximity Scribner has had to many of the great literary figures of the Twentieth Century (and how he distills this proximity) is not to be missed.
Two sides to the life of a very privileged man!.......2006-05-06
Great-great grandson of the founder of Charles Scribner's Sons, the publishing house, Charles Scribner III has worked as an editor and publishing executive for nearly 30 years.
This is an artfully arranged memoir of his schooling, his youth, his love for music and art. It is also about his conversion to Catholicism when in college, and highlights epiphanies of coincidence and faith during the course of one year.
While he did have a privileged upbringing-private schools, Princeton, trips to Europe, and incredible exposure to art and music-he also had his share of darkness (deaths by cancer of close friends and relatives, his father succumbing to Alzheimer's, and the alcoholism of a beloved teacher). His profound faith and the meaning it gives to his life every day shines through his words like sunlight through a veil of leaves blowing in the wind.
Not a riveting or exciting read; but a calm and thoughtfully expressed paean to the Catholic Church, the people of his youth, music and art.
Armchair Interviews says: Two unique sides to the life of a very privileged man.
Book Description
In December 1988 Floyd Skloot was stricken by a virus that targeted his brain, leaving him totally disabled and utterly changed. In the Shadow of Memory is an intimate picture of what it is like to find oneself possessed of a ravaged memory and unstable balance and confronted by wholesale changes in both cognitive and emotional powers. Skloot also explores the gradual reassembling of himself, putting together his scattered memories, rediscovering the meaning of childhood and family history, and learning a new way to be at home in the world. Combining the author’s skills as a poet and novelist, this book finds humor, meaning, and hope in the story of a fragmented life made whole by love and the courage to thrive.
Customer Reviews:
Superb.......2005-10-28
Mr Skloot has won many awards for his writings about living his life and even these cannot adequately capture the struggle, courage, gifts, and love of this man and the life he lives. Anyone who works as health care providers or has a loved one with dementia will be amazed, enlightened, and encouraged if they slowly read Mr Skloot's masterpieces. Life giving books.
Memory issues.......2005-09-04
Guess I had different expectations for this book after hearing Mr. Skloot interviewed on NPR. Was expecting more of the day-to-day issues he had with his memory loss.
I deal with a lot of clients suffering from memory loss of one kind or another and had ordered the book for several hands-on caregivers. They may get enough out of the book to understand how memory loss shrinks a persons world and their frustrations with that shrinking world.
a remarkarkable, insightful, loving book.......2004-09-25
This is the first time I have been inspired to write a review for Amazon. I do so because I believe Floyd Skloot's memoir deserves as wide a readership as possible.
His description of his own condition is extraordinary. I cannot think of another volume in which neurological illness is described so vividly "from the inside." His integration of relevant scientific literature within his account is always accessible and informative. And his setting all of this in the wider context of his life story makes terrific reading. He is candid, insightful, evocative, and poetic. We get to know him, not only as a writer and as a patient, but as a person--and he's a mensch. Although he lives far out in the country, he becomes our neighbor with this volume. This is of the most honest, perceptive, and well crafted books that I have read in a very long time.
Wonderful Family Memoir.......2003-09-09
I value this book most as a wonderful family memoir -- of the Skloots 1950s working-to-middle class immigrant experience. I wish everyone could write about their dysfunctional families with the kind of compassion and forgiveness found here.
Skloot never flies the victim banner with his physical condition -- on the contrary, it seems to have given him a greater understanding of others. In his forties, he was hit with a virus that left him with some of the same brain malfunctions as his Alzheimers-afflicted mother. The story of his recovered relationship with his brother -- a compulsively over-eating, severe diabetic, and his once terrifying mother, are healing for anyone to read.
This is real soul food.
What it's like "to be geezered overnight".......2003-07-05
A fierce virus assaulted Floyd Skloot's brain overnight, leaving him severely impaired, mentally. With his productive life changed forever, he began painstakingly writing heroic essays about his experience. Against all odds (given the dour subject), the result is insightful, moving and often downright hilarious. As a writer of poetry and novels, Skloot is able to plumb the depths of his mind for just the right word or phrase to lift his tragedy to heroic levels. By the end of the book, you realize that he has come to the point of viewing his disaster as an opportunity to live a rich and rewarding new life - just on a different level.
Inspirational without being cloying.

Thisis another book about Dark Shadwos that brings back memories of days past. I think any Dark Shadows fan would enjoy this book.
Awful book.......2004-05-25

"Dark Shadows: Memories" is Enlightening.......2003-07-12
This is a great book for those wanting to learn more about "Dark Shadows", whether the show is new to you or you're rediscovering it after years of last seeing it. Behind-the-scenes information, a short synopsis for each episode, and memories of the other cast members by the author. Kathryn Leigh Scott really enjoyed her time on the show, and it comes through in the book as she talks about the hectic shooting schedules, almost with a fondness. It's nice to read that over 30 years later she is still friends with her "Shadows" co-stars. How many people can say they are friends with their ex-co-workers after that many years? I recommend this book to anyone who ever had or still has a fondness for the show.
First hand.......2002-04-26
This is just one of the best books I've ever read on Dark Shadows. Kathryn writes brilliantly on her time in the show, describing the marvellously. Reading the various anecdotes made me wish I was there when the show was originally broadcast and there were a lot of stories I'd never heard. A great shame it has never been shown properly in the U.K. - thank goodness I've got the videos! Well recommended for anyone who loves Dark Shadows or fans of cult tv-programmes who are curious about this series.

Great For Journaling.......2006-03-13
I am a huge fan of the show "Charmed" and basically I like finding merchandise from or about the show. I am a mad journaler and this book is great. It is bound nicely, in black, pages aren't lined, very sturdy. It has a little insert about how to write your spells, which is a bit hoaky, but cute. And on the spine it says Book of Shadows which thrilled me to no end. I definitely would recommend this for any writer, journaler sort.
A Must For The Craft.......2005-10-13
The quality of this book is wonderful. The cover, binding and pages are designed to last for a long time. (possibly into the next several generations). I've seen these books with more cover designs (Pentacle, Diana, Eye of Horus and Blank)at the website for So Mote It Be Boutique. You should check there if you want different designs. But all and all this is a great buy for your money.
Okay for Some.......2005-06-15
This is indeed, a marketing tool. However, it is a very good one at that. The quality of the paper and pages is much better than those even found in professional-written books. It is just a notebook, but it is a very well-made one. It can withstand the assaults of time and paper-eating bugs. The binding is also well-done. It is not a haphazardly-made product. However, it is a little too expensive for just good paper bound together. I would advise you to buy it if you're a real Wicca lover, or even a collector, but if you're a fun-seeking person, the answer is no.
Good quality blank BOS.......2004-10-05
this is a blank journal of solid quality. I have had mine for nearly a year now and have filled about 3/4 of it. While the faux leather finish is beginning to peel and some of my older journals have proven to be more durable, this specific BOS-style journal with large, unlined pages proves to be a versatile, classy, and helpful book for any witch to have.
Great beginner book.......2004-01-07
This is a beautiful hard cover book excellent for the beginner wiccan. It is exactly as described and I highly recommend it.
