5 out of 5 stars The perfect gift for people you love when they're diagnosed with Cander........2007-09-19

12+ years ago when my surgeon told me I had breast cancer (my second bout with cancer), she gave me this book. Not only did it help me develop, sustain and exude a positive attitude during my entire treatment phase, but it made me a touchstone for anyone else who was diagnosed with cancer and contacted me. Since that time, whenever someone that is near and dear to me, someone that I truly love and want to do something positive for when they are diagnosed with cancer, I give them a copy of this book. Not one of them has died to date. My most recent gift of the book has been to my husband and he is visibly changing his attitude as he reads it.

1 out of 5 stars Not your fault!.......2007-07-12

When I was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, I read a wide variety of "inspirational" cancer survivor books. The Bloch's Foundation's "Fighting Cancer" (free just contact them) and Norman Cousin's "Anatomy of an Illness" really resonated for me, made sense and reinforced my focus. Bernie Siegel's books on the other hand made me feel that the disease was my fault for having the "wrong" personality and that if I allowed any negative thoughts into my mind, I was putting my recovery in doubt. Heck most of my thoughts during treatment were negative, real negative! I literally threw his books in the trash, probably more of a symbolic gesture, but it felt good. BTW I am cancer free for the last 16 years, fathered a child and getting a kick out every day.

3 out of 5 stars A powerful message but not scientifically prooven.......2007-06-26

Bernie's central theme is that there is a strong correlation between emotional health and physical health. However he rarely cites any scientific evidence for his claim. He keeps repeating this message based on his experiences with random patients. Surely one can conclude many things from random patients, but a theory has to applicable accross a large sample. There has to be a 'control' if the study is to have any scientific merit. I wished he had shown more of these studies.

This would definitely be a five star book had the author been more scientific in prooving his point. Nevertheless I do personally agree with it.

5 out of 5 stars hope, but not false hope.......2007-05-15

I'd pretty much accepted that i was going to die from cancer. My doctors had too. My friend gave me this book and it caused a huge attitude shift in me. Now I feel that I have it within me to heal and live a long happy and healthy life. I've been told there is nothing medically can be done for me. If I hadn't read this book first I would have just laid down and died when they told me. But now I've opened myself up to other tools for healing - good diet, wheatgrass, reiki, meditation and absolutely no sugar. Time will tell, but I think I'm on the right track.

I thought this book was so good that I ordered a copy to give to my oncologist. He's a lovely man and I believe his desire to help his patients will lead him to use this book as a useful tool in the future.

5 out of 5 stars a read that cheers you up.......2007-05-10

Everybody who is confused and scared about what they are going through due to serious health problems should read this book. "Healthy" people also, they will learn a lot.

Book Description

Today we are experiencing extraordinary technological advances in the diagnosis and treatment of illness while at the same time learning to take more responsibility for our own health and well-being. In this book, Saki Santorelli, director of the nationally acclaimed Stress Reduction Clinic, explores the ancient roots of medicine, and shows us how to introduce mindfulness into the crucible of the healing relationship. His approach revolutionizes the dynamics between the patient and the practitioner. In describing the classes at the clinic and the transformation that takes place in this alchemical process, he offers insights and effective methods for cultivating mindfulness in our everyday lives. As he reveals the inner landscape of his own life as a health care professional and we join him and those with whom he works on this journey of human suffering and courage, we become aware of and honor what is darkest and brightest within each one of us.

5 out of 5 stars Profound little book.......2007-07-14

I've read this little book several times, getting more and more from it with each rereading. I've also purchased several copies for friends. I've had the pleasure of attending a 7 day workshop with the author, and he is as sincere and charismatic as he is in this book. What a gift!!

5 out of 5 stars Healing in a deeper way.......2007-01-16

I've read many books on healing. This book addresses healing in a deeply spiritual manner that is very easy to read, understand and implement.

5 out of 5 stars A poetics of meditation.......2003-10-30

I am just beginning graduate study in psychology, but I already consider this to be one of the truly indispensable books in the field. Saki is a brutally honest reporter of his own perceptions and feelings as he engages in the "healing relationship" as he teaches the MBSR program at UMassMed, and takes the reader deep into his view of what it means to "practice the healing arts", and invites us to consider the depth and meaning of our own journey into the field, as well as to begin our own journey into mindfulness.

See also "Full Catastrophe Living" by Jon Kabat-Zinn for a more practical, informational view of the MBSR program, and for the finest practical guide to mindfulness meditation yet written.

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinarily poetic book about a pragmatic subject!.......1999-04-12

An extraordinarily poetic book about a very pragmatic subject - a way of working in any "helping field."

5 out of 5 stars A guide for healers and want-to-be healers like physicians........1999-04-01

Not only a description of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, but a sharing of what the healing relationship is about. A poetic guide to being with people in a nourishing, honoring way that encourages self-healing. Very easy to read, loved the poetry.

1 out of 5 stars Light headed.......2003-06-25

The worst book on guilt I have read so far. A salad of pseudo sience and new age bla bla.

5 out of 5 stars Know Yourself.......2001-07-23

This book is a keeper. Borysenko gently holds a mirror up for us to peek into our essence and see through our masks. We are a kaleidoscope of feelings, a symphony of thoughts drumming our consciousness, and much, much more. Joy comes with the observer, with insight into our humanity, with unraveling the heartless assumptions we have made about ourselves, and with letting go of the shame we carry. An articulate, important book.

3 out of 5 stars Having coffee with Joan.......2000-02-09

That's what this book will feel like to you: surely you must be sitting in your favorite coffeeshop across from Joan Borysenko, bending heads over a couple of Cafe Mochas! Joan tells it like it is, but with compassion, and a relation to what happened to her. I've had suspicions about the source of guilt in my life, but Joan's stories were the push to clarity. Years of talk therapy coalesced for me with this book. I had the good fortune to meet Joan once. Her energy is so friendly; you'll swear you've known her all her life. Thank the Source for inspiring this woman to teach us!

5 out of 5 stars Anyone who suffers from obsessive guilt . ........1999-07-12

. . should read this book. Joan Borysenko, PhD., appears to be highly versed in the knowledge of guilt, as she suffered from this disease herself.

This book is rich in different forms of psychology, both past and present, but it also mixes the spiritual with that psychology. I think, with most psychologists, that is the factor that is missing. There's the physical, the mental, and the spiritual. Too often, doctors leave the latter out of their practice, and I believe, as Joan Borysenko illustrates, it is a mistake.

This is not just merely a self-help book, but a book that gives you a lot of detail and insight on unhealthy guilt. The aurthor uses examples from her own life, as well as from some of the people she has come across in her practice, to give the reader further understanding. There's exercises for the reader to try, as well as meditations.

If you've EVER suffered from obsessive, unhealty guilt and low self-esteem, this book is MUST.

4 out of 5 stars Balanced and very helpful.......1998-02-04

Joan Borysenko is often dismissed as a New Age airhead, and her recent books are mostly a rehash of her earlier ones. But I think this is her strongest book, for several reasons. Guilt is a powerful component in many people's psychological makeup (especially women's). While pop psychologists tend to dismiss guilt as simply an unhealthy vestige of an overly strict religious upbringing, this does justice to neither the force of the emotion nor its positive components, compassion and responsibility. Borysenko avoids oversimplifying these issues, distinguishes the healthy from the unproductive aspects of guilt (her discussion of "New Age Guilt" is worth the price of the book), and offers positive guidance on how to learn the lessons guilt can teach us. A major contribution to Western philosophy it's not, but I found this book the most balanced, sane, and practical discussion of guilt that I've ever read.

Book Description

Inspired by his Cherokee grandmother's healing ceremonies, Lewis Mehl-Madrona enlightens readers to "alternative" paths to recovery and health. Coyote Medicine isn't about eschewing Western medicine when it's effective, but about finding other answers when medicine fails: for chronic sufferers, patients not responding to medication, or "terminal" cases that doctors have given up on. In the story of one doctor's remarkable initiation into alternative ways to spiritual and physical health, Coyote Medicine provides the key to untapped healing methods available today.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous Source of Insight.......2005-09-26

"Coyote Medicine" is a tremendous source of insight and experience within the path of shamanism and health. Dr. Mehl-Madrona's story-telling is magnificent and at times very suspenseful hitting directly on our sensitive health and spiritual issues we face culturally. But, he doesn't give you easy answers, because his path to becoming a healer was very complex. For me, this book opened up parts of my consciousness and answered questions I was asking and some of those I hadn't yet asked. This book was truly a God-send and I am savoring every word I read.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading on Holistic Medicine.......2003-06-22

This book blew me away. I have reread much of it so many times and bought multiple copies for friends. I have filled the margins of my copy with notes and filled notebooks with essays and thoughts inspired by Dr. Mehl-Madrona's book. It is nothing short of miraculous itself, in addition to describing medical miracles and how they are brought about by spiritual intervention and Native American healing.

A child prodigy, Lewis Mehl-Madrona hitchhiked to a local college while still in high school, read philosophy science voraciously and was the youngest peacetime graduate of Stanford Medical School. The more impressive since his childhood was at times difficult.

At medical school, Dr. Mehl-Madrona became interested in shamanic traditions and attended some sweat lodge and tipi ceremonies. Here he encountered otherwordly phenomena such as blue light, sparks, sensorial stimulation and miracle cures in cases that were deemed too far gone by western doctors. Most importantly, Dr. Mehl-Madrona learned how shamans talked to patients, asked questions about their families and lives and spent long periods of time with them. The author learned that shamans tap into the inner healer of the patient, and consider themselves only partially responsible for any cure.

At the same time, Dr. Mehl-Madrona was encountering negligent and dehumanizing healing practices in his western medical pursuits. A few spine-chilling tales display the callousness and arrogance that exists in some hospitals and clinics. One example: two obstetricians made a bet concerning the fastest C-Section birth and the winner, very triumphant at seventeen minutes, accidentally tied something shut in the woman's internal organs. It was fixed and the woman even wrote a letter of thanks to the hospital! Such is the blind and sometimes unjustified trust the public has in the medical establishment.

The book is wonderfully woven with many colorful strands of storytelling. On one level, it is a memoir of Dr. Mehl-Madrona's journey to reconcile his western medical training with holistic and in particular Native American healing. He is part Native American, so this pursuit poignantly reflects his mixed heritage. Poignant because Dr. Mehl-Madrona often felt like an outsider in all areas of his life, as a Native American man, as an American man, as a western doctor and as an aspiring and ultimately successful shaman.

Another strand of his story is the Native American tradition of healing itself, which we discover in almost the same timeframe that he does. We are introduced to the traditional practice of storytelling as a healing technique at the same time that he is. Early in the book, when the doctor is a resident, he is tending a man whose medical condition is exacerbated (and perhaps caused) by his intensely critical nature. A wonderful passage in recounts Dr. Mehl-Madrona's tentative attempt at telling a story to the cynical patient, himself a psychologist, who groans with sarcasm as the story begins. As it continued, he was intrigued, however, and even hazards a guess at the meaning, to which guess the doctor gives an ambiguous confirmation. The great part of this passage is how Dr. Mehl-Madrona successfully enacts the role of enigmatic shaman even though he himself is still unsure of the story's meaning.

Coyote Medicine also discusses the role of the supernatural in shamanic healing, and the perception of magic and nature. For anyone who ever sat in the woods or even on his aparment steps late at night and felt a mystical connection to something unseen and bigger than himself, Coyote Medicine is a kindred spirit.

At one point the author goes on his vision quest and meets his power animals and is given shamanic healing tools. We as readers are present at many important moments in his life, including personal and family struggles (his first wife, according to the book, seemed to wrestle his children away from him and resented his shamanic efforts), professional travails (Dr. Mehl-Madrona's questioning intelligence, sense of dignity for the patient and also his holistic beliefs created friction with several different western medical institutions). When, at the end of the book, the author finds an accepting partner and on a professional level, a venue where he could combine holistic healing with Western, we feel as thought a close friend has triumphed in the face of great odds.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in healing, either for herself or others, and also about finding one's own individual path, as difficult as and untraveled as it might be, but that is true to the traveler.

Many blessings on this book and thank you Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona.

Robert Murray Diefendorf, Author of Release the Butterfly

5 out of 5 stars Take the risk and make the leap.......2003-01-10

Coyote has always been a special animal to me, so the title jumped out at me. The two feathers and physician's symbol on the cover present a beautiful balance. The physician's symbol has the twin serpents and the two wings of the one. In the background is the four, the Mystery.

Lewis' experiences are related in an interwoven manner. He rushes through life in the quest for medical expertise and validation. In doing so, he trips himself into bouts with infinity as his beautiful plans fall through, day-by-day, year-by-year. However, his rapidly depleted physical/mental being is slowly but surely filling from the inside out. The book is a wonderful, candid sharing of one human's journey to clarify his purpose, his vocation, and to realize such.

He seems like a powerless pawn at times. Have you felt that way? I have. It takes courage to choose the walk toward balance with a fellow being. Lewis had to learn the way of the warrior to survive his path as a healer.

The sweat lodge accounts are beautifully done. I felt it better than any other accounts I have read. Although I have not participated in a lodge, I have experienced years of "spirit stuff". He is talking from experience. Lewis tells us without violating the trust of his friends, manifested or otherwise.

The visions he describes are direct accounts, rather than attempts to relay deep knowings into a form the reader may understand. Visions come in dreams, in rituals, in waking, everyday consciousness, you name it. If we need it and are open to input, we will receive guidance. A vision is experiential, so there is no way to relay the richness and life of such an experience.

Ya gotta walk the walk--it's the only way.

I laughed pretty good at his experience learning to talk with the desert. I too learned this while out alone walking in the desert. At first I thought my spirit friends were nuts--and said so--but I did it and learned a lot. You'll have to read the book to find out.

There were tears of joy and tears of sorrow while reading this book, and a lot of laughter. Thank-you for making the great leap and taking the risk of sharing, Lewis!

5 out of 5 stars Moving, educational and inspiring........2001-08-09

This book is a well written merging of two subjects. The first is a personal sharing of Lewis Mehl-Madrona's upbringing and life experience as a half N.A. Native, his pursuit of a medical degree and specialty and his increasing disillusionment with the "science" of medicine as it is now widely practiced. The second is about Lewis' discovery of N.A. Native spirituality and shamani sm. He leads us on a winding path of discovery that introduces us to the intriguing characters who use shamanism to heal others, often while their own lives are in disarray, to those who sought healing and perhaps most importantly, to the spirits who assisted in the ceremonies. While pursuing this path of curing the individual, rather than the symptom, it seems that Lewis will lose site of his original goal to obtain his medical speciality. But, as so often occurs, as he helps others to heal, the path circles around to encompass his own needs and he completes his original path, a more well-rounded and enlightened human. More capable of understanding. More capable of giving what is really required. I found the writing to be powerful, the personal drama riveting and the glimpse into the ceremonies, symbolism and spiritualism of the N.A. shaman both moving and educational. After all these years of hearing the stories shared by N.A. natives, but not really understanding, I finally "got it". This book slaked a thirst I didn't know I had. Lewis not only shared his story but acted as a teacher and I know that I've grown as a result. I highly recommend it and hope that we'll hear more from this writer.

Book Description

According to the ancient Chinese discipline of chi kung (pronounced chee gung), the body's energy is released by the air breathed into it. Zi, a classically trained American singer raised in China, has adapted that idea in an intriguing method she calls chi zi. (Chi means breath, breathing or air.) Her premise is that controlled breathing can create new sources of life-enhancing energy. In six concise, uncomplicated lessons she shows how to tap into that energy through a range of exercises (accompanied by line drawings), imagery and situational applications. Her techniques for using the body's inner dynamics (the Chinese "core") will be especially valuable in relieving stress, building stamina and engaging in sports.

I got this quite a while ago and was very excited about doing the tape. But while I was excited initially and actually felt good I stopped doing them because I got busy with a project at work and never really went back to it. I was cleaning out my tape library and came across the tape. I started doing the exercises and realized just how good they were and just how out of shape I was. Some of the exercises are not easy but she does a wonderful job of explaining how to do them and what you can do as alternatives as you develop your technique. She seems the ever patient teacher as she calmly moves you along to better breathing.

As a vocalist, using these exercises has helped me immensely already (after only just finishing the 6th lesson!) This is my second time around with them, (did six years ago to help develop diaphram). I'm going to practice regularly so as not to get "rusty" again. Wish I could get in hardcover. . .

5 out of 5 stars one of the top 10 books on breathing exercises........1998-06-06

Nancy is a singing teacher. They MUST know how to improve the breathing though some are better at it then others. I believe Nancy is one of the best. She gave me good insights and accelerated my understanding of the strengthening of the voice for singing and speaking. I would have preferred more information aboout breathing's relationship to health and longevity but this book is a must for the serious student of the breath (or life).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Clear guidance and attractive pictures.......2007-09-12

It is the best of Sonia's decks. The images are brighter and the messages are lighter.

I just pulled the card "Choose your friends wisely". If you consider having a card deck as a "friendly advisor" this one will be true to your best interests.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2007-06-29

I like these cards a lot. They are very simple to use if you are a beginner at using divination tools. I have had very accuate results for others and me.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing oracle.......2007-05-23

I have several decks of oracles cards, and this one is really impressive. It is for good reason that Sonia calls these her "big guns" -I am continually amazed how the cards I choose reflect the heart of what ever is happening for me at the time.

4 out of 5 stars The Best of the 3 Choquette Decks.......2007-03-23

This is the best of the three Choquette decks, with Ask Your Guides coming in at second, because the images in these card are the most positive and the lessons are simple but profound. Most of the cards are very pretty and have a clear message for the every day. The booklet is easy to read and well written to get the lesson fast so you move on swifter while keeping your vibrations high.

A note on Choquette as a world soul teacher: If you want to learn to master her three decks you can pay $4000 to train at a spa in Chicago.
However, on her radio shows, Sonia constantly tells people they are psychic so they will train with her at $3500 for level 1 and 2 at a spa resort in Illinois. She charges $800/hour for personal readings but why is it that a lot of people whom I know who have read her are often told the same thing? Her response is that she attracts a soul group. Everyone is told to do The Artist's Way, that they are psychic, to read Mindful Loving, to do The Hoffman Process (which she is on the board of advisors - maybe she gets a kickback or something), come to her workshops (of course, more money for her), and she recommended to a listener to do alternative medicine... such as homeopathy which has been proven to have ZERO ingredients to be of effectiveness.

If you don't believe me do your own research ... and just listen to her radio show ... the same things over and over again is a pattern of messaging that is too obvious if you go through the archives carefully of her shows.

5 out of 5 stars soul lesson cards.......2007-03-18

This is what I needed to help clarify some things in my life. You must believe in her philosophy of being able to talk to your guides. I truely believe that they are with us and we must get to a higher plane to communicate with them. The cards are a place to start.

Book Description

The beloved American Lama, a spiritual leader whose inimitable light and
lively universal teaching style has awakened the spirituality of thousands, now shares an enlightened approach to change and loss, dealing with difficult emotions such as fear, grief, and anger, and the role of crisis in uncovering our authentic selves.

For many people, recent years have been characterized by profound change, whether it relates to financial upheaval, political shifts, or even massive losses of life to disease and violence. Even on the personal level each person must confront the curves life throws his or her way. Buddhism has a great deal to say about change and impermanence and how to meaningfully deal with it. Change--whether on a large or small scale--provides our most important opportunity for learning about ourselves and the nature of reality. From this essential insight Lama Surya Das has crafted a fulfilling and important path to understanding and healing ourselves and finding peace.

Full of personal stories, anecdotes, practical exercises, guided meditations and reflections, and pithy original aphorisms, Letting Go of the Person You Used to Be addresses life's most universal difficulties in a way that is accessible to all. By using memorable concepts such as The Virtues of Adversity, The Pearl Principle ("No inner irritation, no pearl"), and Gaining through Loss, Surya reminds readers that hiding from change and loss is futile. Learning to consciously accept and embrace change leads to a better understanding of ourselves and our own innate divine light.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars letting go does not mean forgetting.......2007-09-29

A friend gave a copy of this book to me about three years ago, when I was in the depths of depression. It helped me tremendously, and, no, I didn't have to become a Buddhist in order to feel better.

"Letting go of the person you used to be" does not mean completely changing everything about your life, nor does it mean attempting to forget or no longer to care about people you love and have lost. The book's focus is, in fact, on accepting grief and sadness as not only natural, unavoidable aspects of living, but as opportunities for emotional (or spiritual, if you will) growth.

I won't attempt to describe the specific content of the book further, with one exception: For me, one of the most effective passages was that in which Surya Das writes that of course it is difficult to effect change--or even to think about change--when one is really struggling with grief, loss, or sadness. But, he writes, what's the alternative? Just to wallow in, deny, or suppress the pain? Clearly, none of those is an effective or healthy course of action. Therefore, the only reasonable option left is to accept the pain and deal with it as best you can.

This book helped me deal. And it may help you.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and well written book.......2007-09-28

Like Lama Surya Das's other books, it is an easy to read, well written book with the occassional funny, dry humor that I enjoy.
The great thing about the Lama's writing is that he presents the writing from a viewpoint that anyone from any religion can appreciate.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant but not far reaching.......2006-04-03

I have been pursuing Buddhist literature for many years and I have to admit I was a little bit disappointed with this book from Lama Surya Das. Whilst I hold his other two in higher regard (Awakening the Buddha within, Awakening the Buddhist Heart), I thought this particular rendition was lacking in substance. The title was somewhat misleading. Whilst Surya Das does discuss one of the virtues of Buddhism (if I can call it that)of letting go, it is purely a description of anecdotes of people who haven't let go. Letting go is such a simple thing and yet is also one of the hardest. If you're looking for instructions as to how to achieve 'letting go', there isn't any here. Anecdotes don't stop there - there are sprinkled everywhere throughout this book.
The rest of the book looks at other elements such as loss and heroism. It's a bit of a mish mash of this and the other. I thought that there wasn't enough here to relate to the title of the book. Maybe a different title would have been more fitting, such as 'More Buddhist talk about Mindfulness'.
If you are new to Buddhism and need evidence that you are not alone in your pain, then this book will provide you with stories of others like yourself. Compassion and understanding is yours to be gotten. There's nothing much more here.
I'm of the impression that Surya Das is a stout practising Buddhist and a lot of his writing is geared towards participating in the solid practice of specific medidations and rituals. However, if you're like me and you find that Buddhist views resonate within you without becoming a devout follower, then I'd recommend you seek out other great works, such as those of Charlotte Beck or Pema Chodron.

5 out of 5 stars Very well written book.......2006-03-25

Loved the book! Staight forward, easy to understand information. Very spiritual, not necessarily religious. This book made a lot of sense to me. Full of common-sense ideas and values. Will definitely read again.

4 out of 5 stars Poetically Practical Presentation.......2006-03-03

This book is poetically succinct, practical, & sometimes poignant. It overstates the force of mindfulness (ignoring how priorities, values, karma affect situations) but packs a lot into 210 pp. Much is familiar to Buddhist practitioners, but is delightfully presented & well integrated-with morsels to enjoy for old-timers too. The author addresses both the positive & negative aspects of pain & suffering--p. xiii: "In life pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional...without the pain of inner irritation, the pearls of wisdom will not be produced within us...The Pearl Principle: no pain, no transformative gain." He emphasizes & provides a balanced approach to life's tribulations & changes-- pp. 34-5: "The teachings of the Buddha stress balance...Throughout his life, he taught his followers to value balance, restraint, & moderation. He called it the Middle Way: a path of harmonious, non-harming, moderation, virtue, & spiritual investigation-a practical application of the Golden Mean." Maintaining a Buddhist perspective, he gives supporting parallels from other traditions, East & West (e.g. p. 122: Philo-"Be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle"). His approach is primarily psychological with some metaphysics as well-- pp. 43-4: "Loss & suffering can also bring faith. Suffering can be redemptive; it helps burn away superficiality & complacency" & p. 42: "For some of us, the most consistently troublesome thing about loss is the destruction of expectations." He presents practical advice--meditative techniques (e.g. chewing, walking & mindfulness meditations), Medicine Buddha practice (see Thrangu Rinpoche's Medicine Buddha Teachings 1559392169), & Chod. Some is quite touching-based on case histories--p. 47: Laura-"I once read that forgiveness means letting go of the hope for a better past" & his own experiences (e.g. with Suil) or quite profound--p. 83: "The 3rd Patriarch said long ago, `Do not seek for truth; merely cease to cherish opinions' & p. 86: "Nonattachment is the supreme spiritual discipline; non-clinging is the ultimate form of generosity." He addresses difficult topics such as Western romantic relationships in a practical, sensitive manner--p. 163: "We tend to transform our memories into the stuff of legend & myth" & p. 168: "Sometimes you have to keep the love in your heart, but let the object of your affection go." Self-change is the proper response to change itself because, p. 185: "One definition of insanity is doing what we have always done & expecting a different result." He gives a fine exposition on anger--p. 199: "There is wisdom to be found even in anger: with its sharp cutting edge, anger helps us to see what may be wrong. Strong emotions can raise our energy & our conscious awareness. We can direct these qualities into positive action. Anger always reminds us that something needs to change or at least be attended to, usually sooner than later...I see our difficult emotions as disruptive children. When they are acting up it is time to be there for them & with them." And, as with our children--p. 210: "Letting go is the ultimate act of generosity & faith." It's been said that we only truly keep what we give away.

Book Description

Soul Lessons and Soul Purpose is a book channeled by Sonia Choquette’s spirit teacher guides, The Three Bishops, as well as Joachim and the Emissaries of the Third Ray. These highly evolved and loving guides work specifically to bring about understanding, direction, and support to all souls so that we may learn to become the creative masters of the life that we’re intended to have on Earth. The guides state that Earth is “soul school,” and that we’re here to master 22 basic soul lessons in order to fulfill our purpose. Each lesson is laid out in such a way that anyone—on any level—will be ready to follow the instructions.
The guides make it very clear in this book that the timing to learn our soul lessons, open our hearts, and raise our vibration on the Earth plane is now. Negative occurrences will worsen if our energy doesn’t shift and elevate to a more loving plane. We have no time to waste!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Soul Lessons and Soul Purpose.......2007-07-09

I love this book and the way it is presented. At the end of each chapter it had suggestions of what to do to become more spiritally attuned and how to learn the lessons. I bought several copies as gift for my family and friends.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Lessons and Soul Purposes: A Channeled Guide to Why You Are Here.......2007-07-08

I have found this to be a book that encourages me to stay the course toward developing a life for myself filled with what I desire most. I am currently on my 2nd read and I start my day reading one of the 22 chapters. The information in the book is both concise and wise. I would definately recommend this book as a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Simple Yet Powerful Concepts.......2007-06-29

The brilliance of this book is the simplicity and elegance of the concepts it presents and its structure.

This guidebook for the spirit has 22 "soul lessons" that direct the reader towards higher levels of experiencing themselves and their lives. For example, "Address your Mistakes" is one of the concepts shown that at once seems so simple - of course, you're a spiritual person and you're always willing to scrutinize yourself - but Choquette comes at the concept from such a high, discerning level that you come to see it from an expanded viewpoint that shifts you into greater awareness. Its the power of the book that it is not an only intellectual endeavor but a cell-rearranging journey.

Another fantastic feature of the book is the concise guide at the end of each chapter that allows the reader to guage where they are at in relation to embracing the lesson: student, apprentice, journeyman or master. She then offers practical tools, suggestions and tips to assist you to progress in your understanding of these powerful truths.

This is channeled material so I am loathe to admit my favorite bits are the day-to-day personal stories out of Choquette's life that are the most fascinating and entertaining. But they are! They are the slices of life where you get a chance to hear about others pitfalls, blindspots or challenges and connect in an emotional way. These stories are very moving and healing. I've wept reading this book, the amazing snapshots of others lives really are amazing.

5 out of 5 stars soul lessons.......2007-06-28

I thought this book was wonderful, it gave an idea of where you might be on your soul lessons and purpose, I liked that the book gave you tools you could use to help you along your soul lesson way.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Lessons & Soul Purpose.......2007-06-27

Once again Sonia Choquette has gifted us with her unique insights into spiritual growth. This book is an easy read, yet carries a profound message. Each chapter is a lesson. I am now on my second reading of the book; putting the lessons into practice. I have recommended this book to everyone I know.

Reading Spiritual Lessons for My Sisters is like having a real heart to heart chat with a close friend- the type of friend who stands beside you during the tough times and inspires you to do better but also calls you on your self-destructive behaviors and kicks your butt when you need that too.

The book consists of seventy-five life lessons. Each of these realizations is explored using analogy, common situations, real life experiences, and in some cases poetry. These notes encourage woman to look within, take responsibility for their lives, seek happiness, and to have faith in themselves, their future, and in their spiritual beliefs.

5 out of 5 stars A Wrokbook Companion is my companion is study.......2007-07-29

A Workbook Companion, Vol. II, and, of course, Vol I, are my companions as I go though the Workbook for Students. I find that what Allen and Robert have written for each day's lesson helps me so much in my daily meditation and hourly reminders. They often give me a way at looking at the lesson that I didn't think of myself. I always study the lesson first, read from A Workbook Companion, then I do the morning meditation. It has been a literal godsend for me.

An extremely helpful study-aid to the Course. Wouldn't be without it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2006-08-02

This, and its companion Volume I, are the best two sources through which to practice the daily lessons in the COURSE IN MIRACLE Workbook. Equal parts inspiration, clarification and motivation, it is a manual for living life.

5 out of 5 stars Borders for the Edges of the Path.......2006-06-28

If you're studying A Course in Miracles, buy this book, and its companion volume. The two of them will give you left and right hand borders for the Path of ACIM. Robert Perry's Practice Instruction is very helpful, and Allen Watson Lesson Commentaries are full of insight. Both of these men are true scholars of the Course, and can be trusted to help its Author bring out the most for you. As I've said in other reviews, I'm in no way connected to The Circle of Atonement, but my experience with Circle Publishing's books has been overwhelmingly positive. They're well written, and easily understood. And it doesn't hurt that they're aesthetically pleasing, both to the eye and to the hand. As a final note, be aware that their website is a fine resource.
