Great book.......2007-09-30
The book is clearly satire, and definitely exaggerates a bit, but it still gives you a sense of the Wall Street culture, where people are extremely wealthy but also extremely unrefined (scarfing greasy cheeseburgers while making millions). Very funny. Also extremely informative on topics such as the rise of mortgage bonds and junk bonds as financial tools. The book gives a great portrayal of the genius of the people behind these financial innovations. In fact, its portrayal of people in general is very funny and memorable. One final upside: there are some books, where, if you don't read them for about a week, you have no clue what's going on anymore. This is not one of those. There are relatively few people to keep track of, and they are described so well that you can't forget them.
I would DEFINITELY recommend this book. Funny and informative, a window onto a strange culture known as Wall Street.
Mildly Amusing.......2007-08-28
Michael Lewis' inside look at the heady days of Salomon Brothers during the 1980s and the decay that followed is a mildly amusing, albeit disjointed narrative with little new information. It is funny in parts and some of the character sketches make you pause but overall a strictly average book.
Read "Moneyball" or "The Blind Side" Before This.......2007-07-25
Long before "Moneyball" and "The Blind Side," Michael Lewis wrote "Liar's Poker." It is a short, entertaining story about Salomon Brothers during the highs and lows of the 80's. Salomon created the mortgage bond market. And like many first movers, it exploited its advantage for years. Sellers and buyers barely understood the market. No one understood the bonds' valuations. The only sure thing was that Salomon was going to make money. But ungodly profits enticed competition, and competitors poached Salomon's best traders. Even worse, bond underwriters thought they were more clever each day and created more complicated trading vehicles. Eventually, the market crashed because of excessive supply, complexity, and hubris. In some ways, it parallels what we see with hedge funds today.
Although the book is a simple and entertaining story, it lacks much of the rigorous analytics and insights that are present in Lewis's more recent books. His younger rhetoric is less mature and prone to hyperbole. He desperately tries to hide his arrogance (something you don't see in his later writing). If you're looking for a quick read during a plane ride, then this is a decent story. If you've heard favorable things about Michael Lewis and you want to read one of his books, buy "Moneyball" or "The Blind Side" before "Liar's Poker."
Interesting but not exceptional.......2007-06-27
It provides a good picture of the Wall Street during the 80's but it is sometimes tiring when describing the personality of some characters.
Book Description
Mortgage-backed and asset-backed securities are fixed-income securities, like bonds, which derive their return from an underlying mortgage or basket of mortgages, or an asset or basket of assets. This market has increased from about $100 billion in 1980 to over $2.5 trillion today. Filling the void for a new book on fixed-income, Salomon Smith Barney Guide to Mortgage-Backed and Asset-Backed Securities provides a coherent and comprehensive approach to the subject. Featuring material used by the company, this book is an ideal training tool and resource for investment professionals, institutional investors, pension fund investors, and hedge-fund investors.
Lakhbir Hayre (New York, NY) is a mortgage officer at Salomon Smith Barney, and their leading expert on mortgage-backed and asset-backed securities. He is a Certified Financial Analyst and a Doctor of Philosophy.

A collection of client reports: a Handbook (simplified), but not a Textbook.......2007-02-17
If you are a professional working on ABS and you want to have a handy collection of the client reports that were distributed by Salomon Smith Barney (now Citigroup), well this book might be very useful for you. The book covers a large breadth of topics and generally they are written quite well. But putting together 700 pages of reports written by different authors doesn't make it an organized book. Most of the chapters are neither a logical consequence of the previous one nor self contained, and they require you to be already familiar with the terminology. Furthermore, this book lacks examples of implementation details, and the mathematics involved doesn't go beyond the very basic. For example, you won't get much detail on how to structure a CMO or how to calibrate a prepayment model.
If you don't already know ABS and want to learn the details of securitization I advise you to consider the book of Stone and Zissu.
Excellent.......2006-12-12
By covering topics of great practical importance in the mortgage industry, both from the standpoint of mortgage-backed securities and from the mortgage origination process, this handbook should be helpful to those entering the field of fixed income securities and those who are seasoned veterans. The authors of the different articles emphasize the applied and practical aspects of the subject, and so no heavy guns from mathematics are brought in (as they could be in the discussions on term structure models and option-adjusted spreads), but even those readers interested in these tools from mathematics could view the handbook as an introduction to the key ideas used. In this regard the part of the handbook on prepayment analysis and modeling will be of great interest to those responsible for financial modeling, as will the part on option-adjusted spreads and durations. Readers will probably not read the handbook from cover to cover, but instead will select those articles that they have the greatest interest in. The handbook can be consulted as needed and compared with other more current literature on the topics discussed.
Financial revolutions are not as common as revolutions in other fields, due to the conservative nature of financiers and venture capitalists, but when they happen they do so with a vengeance. The mortgage industry is currently undergoing such a revolution, due not only to the innovations that are occurring in mortgage-lending but also to the willingness of homeowners to cash in on their equity. In addition, techniques from artificial intelligence (usually called "smart automation" in the mortgage industry) are being used to automate the loan origination process, particularly that of underwriting and estimation of borrower credit-worthiness. The mortgage loan origination process can now be tuned to the profile of the individual applicant and parameters such as interest rates, to produce a loan that is structured optimally for this applicant. In addition, the sheer number of regulations that must be complied with, both from municipal, state, and federal agencies can be daunting to financial and mortgage firms. But there are now technologies that have automated compliance. All of these developments are dependent on the concepts discussed in this handbook, along with others of course that are not included in it. No doubt as the mortgage revolution reaches maturity, this handbook will have to be rewritten, and might indeed include concepts that at the present time seem extremely radical or even alien, much as the current ones would have just two decades ago.
Filled in the gaps.......2006-11-08
This helped me understand how this works, with some of the jargon and some of the standard models that are used in valuation.
Hayre is lucid and informative! The Best Prepayment book.......2003-10-14
As other reviewers have mentioned this is a must for anyone involved with MBS ABS markets. Outstanding discussions on prepayment. Very detailed analysis of MBS ABS structures and related processes. A must for all people working with MBS.
Some modeling is hidden and not well explained...
Clearly the best!.......2003-01-10
A clear and detailed book, written by the No. 1 expert in MBS from, Salomon Smith Barney, the best MBS underwriting and trading firm on Wall Street. A must for all people working with MBS.
Customer Reviews:
Love this boook!.......2007-10-03
I agree with the last review that this book will make you want to
sell everything to see just how much you can do without. I have
a very large home and yet feel unhappy with it. I had such a feeling of peace just reading about the kind of life described in this book!
makes you wanna sell everything!!!.......2007-09-23
This book takes my breath away...it makes me want to sell everything and move into the smallest space I can find. Everyone needs to read this and realize what we are all capable of living without!!
A small house must read............2007-07-15
I was skeptical when I first heard of the book since the cover had photos of what I considered some old, boring small homes. Then I looked closer and saw there were some really interesting looking ones like I have seen in Mexico, Greece and along the coasts of France, Italy and Spain and even in Scotland and Ireland.
Like that the author challenges the reader to really set aside notions that one had about how things have to be done. And how thinking outside the box, and asking oneself how little does one need to be content and how can that thinking be applied to designing or redoing a small home to make it more livable as well as more calm and enjoyable.
And how to use materials that are reclaimed but also energy efficient and appealing to the eyes. And a home that will allow you to live well and below your means. In fact I lay in bed and realized the small cottage I live in that was built in the late 1800's is to big for me. That I want something clean, small and open.
And the book may make you go even further as I have done, and sell off a lot of stuff one has that one doesn't need nor often even want. Almost like being told that a really cool sailboat with living quarters below can be yours within two weeks, and you then get really serious and sort out what you really need and then make the move.
This book should challenge as well as inspire the reader. Even the one who thought owning a McMansion was the only way to go.
With New Eyes.......2007-03-02
This book really changed how I look at home life. The text is meaty and kept me up two nights in a row. I had been grumping about how cramped my house seemed. With a spouse, two dogs, and a cat our 2000 sf seemed, well, just not big enough. After reading the book, and thinking about it, I saw the real problem, it was never a space issue, it was a stuff issue. For the past two weeks we have thinned, sorted, trashed, donated and otherwise cleared out roughly half of what was in the house. Now the house can breathe and there is space for us. So, even if you live in a regular size space, or can't imagine living in a small one, this is a grand book. It really helps you see the functions of a home and isolate your needs. If you are working at living a simple, green or wabi-sabi life this book is a must.
this book is amazing.......2007-02-28
It is much much more than a set of floorplans. It is a guide to a happy life in your home. Here's a quote "do you want to live in a home or a bank?" - So many people look at their home as an investment first, and dont really look at how happy they really are in their house.
This book made a major difference in how I look at my existing house. My fiancee and I are using the insights from the book to happily merge two households into one - without "space wars". It has given me insight which enabled me to feel that "I own my house - my house does not own me". There are lovely photographs and ideas - as well as a great sprinkling of history and insightful thoughts throughout the book.
Like the small but elegant domiciles the authors highlight, this book is no assembly-line product... it is obviously a carefully constructed labor of love.

Customer Reviews:
Fake reviewers, this must be a
<1 star rank .......2006-03-13
trust me, this book(let) is really bad. Nothing Nothing, it contains Nothing!
I guess some top bankers just write whatever off their minds during lunchtime and put into this book(let) for sale.
there is no way people would rank it 4-5 stars on a sane mind.
buy it and you will regret.
It is like a pitch book.......2005-12-14
This book does not reflect in any way the world of investment banking and really does resemble to an IBanker pitch book. This is especially fond in the ML director vaunting the his bank and how good they are with the new recruits. However, the Manager from DB drawn a pretty picture of the business and how it did built a department. Overall, it less than average book, Monkey business is a lot better.
Jerome
==>Revealing.......2003-09-12
"Inside the Minds" is one of the most informative books I've read about investment banking aside from my Corporate Finance textbooks. The question and answer interview format made the text highly readable. Answers were filled less with managerial jargon and more with nuts-to-bolts advice on how to be a successful banker. Many of the books I've found about banking are either about how to get into the business or about deal mechanics. "Inside" focuses on what personal values help one succeed as a banker, and how to ensure longevity in the industry. "Inside the Minds" is similar to "Market Wizards," by Jack Schwager, only it's about banking (not trading). Both were entirely fascinating, and I'm still looking for more books like them.
First Hand Look at Investment Banking.......2003-07-30
This is a great book on the "insider" world of investment banking - applicable for both current and aspiring investment bankers, seasoned veterans, and anyone interested in how investment bankers operate. Having been in banking for 10 years at a tier 1 investment banking firm, this is the first insider account of investment banking I have read. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in investment banking.

One of the most powerful and moving biographies.......2001-04-27
You may have read many memoirs, and biographies about people affected by the Holocaust. However, do not think this is similar to other stories, or be put off by a topic that is upsetting. The journey through this book will be more than rewarding. Mary Felstiner has a deep, historical knowledge of Charlotte Salomon that she relays in a moving, and powerful style. You feel that you intimately know the people she writes about. Salomon's story is not one that is widely known, but it should be. She painted her life story during the Nazi years in the form of an operetta. Her paintings recently on display in the US tell a painful, vivid story of her, her parents, and her lover. This book is about what happened to Charlotte Salomon and her family during the Nazi years, but will also be of great interest to people interested in art, and in the human condition. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Book Description
This is the first major survey of research on the indigenous peoples of South America from the earliest peopling of the continent to the present since Julian Steward's Handbook of South American Indians was published half a century ago. Although this volume concentrates on continental South America, peoples in the Caribbean and lower Central America who were linguistically or culturally connected are also discussed. The volume's emphasis is on self-perceptions of the indigenous peoples of South America at various times and under differing situations.

This is a very important book, because is concerned with a contemporaty issue because of the 500 years of american colonization. It is really good to find in one volume informations about several country. Book Description
The book seeks, for the first time in any language, to combine Thackeray's many depictions of, and comments on, Jews and Judaism, from Old Testament times to his own present, into a coherent, chronologically ordered narrative. Texts and early versions that have not found their way into the collected editions are considered alongside well-known passages from Barry Lyndon, Vanity Fair, The Newcomes and Rebecca and Rowena. Since Thackeray illustrated many of his own works, graphic illustrations are as carefully chronicled and considered as narrative ones. The writings and drawings examined are set in a fourfold context: Thackeray's own life, psychological make-up, and developing art and opinions; the social history of Britain and its Jews; British and European literary and graphic conventions, traditions, and stereotypes; and the interplay of prejudice or animus with an essential British fair-mindedness that strives to present as truthful a picture as the author's limited perspectives, or satiric and humorous purposes, will allow. The book constitutes a substantial addition to the existing body of studies devoted to the image of Jews and Judaism in the work of influential non-Jewish writers and artists.

"A wonderful treasure chest of information; spanning a wide range of data compression methods, from simple test compression methods to the use of wavelets in image compression. It is unusual for a text on compression to cover the field so completely." – ACM Computing Reviews
"Salomon’s book is the most complete and up-to-date reference on the subject. The style, rigorous yet easy to read, makes this book the preferred choice … [and] the encyclopedic nature of the text makes it an obligatory acquisition by our library." – Dr Martin Cohn, Brandeis University
Data compression is one of the most important tools in modern computing, and there has been tremendous progress in all areas of the field. This fourth edition of Data Compression provides an all-inclusive, thoroughly updated, and user-friendly reference for the many different types and methods of compression (especially audio compression, an area in which many new topics covered in this revised edition appear).
Among the important features of the book are a detailed and helpful taxonomy, a detailed description of the most common methods, and discussions on the use and comparative benefits of different methods. The book’s logical, clear and lively presentation is organized around the main branches of data compression.
Topics and features:
•highly inclusive, yet well-balanced coverage for specialists and nonspecialists
•thorough coverage of wavelets methods, including SPIHT, EZW, DjVu, WSQ, and JPEG 2000
•comprehensive updates on all material from previous editions
And these NEW topics:
•RAR, a proprietary algorithm
•FLAC, a free, lossless audio compression method
•WavPack, an open, multiplatform audio-compression algorithm
•LZMA, a sophisticated dictionary-based compression method
•Differential compression
•ALS, the audio lossless coding algorithm used in MPEG-4
•H.264, an advanced video codec, part of the huge MPEG-4 project
•AC-3, Dolby's third-generation audio codec
•Hyperspectral compression of 3D data sets
This meticulously enhanced reference is an essential resource and companion for all computer scientists; computer, electrical and signal/image processing engineers; and scientists needing a comprehensive compilation of compression methods. It requires only a minimum of mathematics and is well-suited to nonspecialists and general readers who need to know and use this valuable content.

An undiscovered gem of compression algorithm details.......2006-04-08
This book covers a needed middle ground between the more formal books on the subject such as Sayood's "Introduction To Data Compression" and easy programmer-oriented books such as Nelson's "The Data Compression Book". This book is an encyclopedia of compression methods that briefly describes the technique of each method, along with any required math, and then shows the algorithm. Code is not shown in the sense that there are no CompressionAlgorithm.cpp files included that you can lift without knowing what you are doing. However, the algorithm pseudocode is such that you should be able to translate any algorithm into code without much trouble. I know that this book has helped me. I would suggest that any true student of data compression methods use this book in conjunction with Sayood's book. Use Sayood to get the mathematical background that you need. Then use this book to read the details of a particular algorithm in plain language. This book is truly an undiscovered gem for most in the field and I highly recommend it.
Very Complete - No Useless Filler.......2005-05-04
This is by far the most all-encompassing and thorough data compression book I have ever come across. Every method covered is carefully explained in great detail leaving no doubt as to how to implement it into your various projects. This is not just some ho-hum discussion of existing software and how to copy the coding of it, as some other texts turn out to be. For once, an author did not clutter his pages of pure compression information with mountains of proprietary source code or over abundant mathematical nonsense. This book is the real deal for true data compression enthusiasts looking to follow along in real world usages and research new methods. If your sole purpose is to draw up a statistical analysis of a particular algorithm, grab your calculator and go someplace else to write your term paper. To copy someone else's source code, search the net. For those of you interested in getting in there and really tackling modern compression methodology and adapting it to whatever your needs and desires may be, this is the only book you will ever need.
Many algorithms included, but no in-depth discussion.......1999-05-02
This book explains lots of algorithms, the author tries to give you a brief overview on each of them.
However, if you're interested in the concrete ideas and proofs on how the algorithms help you to compress your data, with some mathematical works, the book isn't enough. You'll find it difficult if you want to implement the algorithms by merely reading the book.
Some idea are not clearly explained too, say, the the information on Gzip is just a summary of the GNU documentation with no in-depth discussion.
Anyway, this book is a great one judging from the (sad) fact that there are not many references on the subject.
A comprehensible but not very profound book.......1998-12-13
The book is quite comprehensible also if English is not your mother tongue.
Many algorithms are touched on, but often not profound enough to allow programers to implement the methods. Also the subtitle "The Complete Reference" is questionable: I bought the book because I was looking for facts about the Elias-Willems algorithm. In vain!
Decent overview of many algorithms.......1998-10-24
This book is more about breadth than depth. It explains the workings of pretty much every data and image compression algorithm you've ever heard of. It's not as strong on theory as Bell/Cleary/Witten's _Text Compression_, and doesn't have source code like Nelson's _The Data Compression Book_, but it does a fine job of filling in the space between.
If you're not looking for source code or lots of theory, and just want to know what all these dozens of algorithms actually *do*, this would be an appropriate book for you.
