Book Description

In one of the most anticipated books of the year, Lee Woodruff, along with her husband, Bob Woodruff, share their never-before-told story of romance, resilience, and survival following the tragedy that transformed their lives and gripped a nation.

In January 2006, the Woodruffs seemed to have it all–a happy marriage and four beautiful children. Lee was a public relations executive and Bob had just been named co-anchor of ABC’s World News Tonight. Then, while Bob was embedded with the military in Iraq, an improvised explosive device went off near the tank he was riding in. He and his cameraman, Doug Vogt, were hit, and Bob suffered a traumatic brain injury that nearly killed him.

In an Instant is the frank and compelling account of how Bob and Lee’s lives came together, were blown apart, and then were miraculously put together again–and how they persevered, with grit but also with humor, through intense trauma and fear. Here are Lee’s heartfelt memories of their courtship, their travels as Bob left a law practice behind and pursued his news career and Lee her freelance business, the glorious births of her children and the challenges of motherhood.

Bob in turn recalls the moment he caught the journalism “bug” while covering Tiananmen Square for CBS News, his love of overseas assignments and his guilt about long separations from his family, and his pride at attaining the brass ring of television news–being chosen to fill the seat of the late Peter Jennings.

And, for the first time, the Woodruffs reveal the agonizing details of Bob’s terrible injuries and his remarkable recovery. We learn that Bob’s return home was not an end to the journey but the first step into a future they have learned not to fear but to be grateful for.

In an Instant is much more than the dual memoir of love and courage. It is an important, wise, and inspiring guide to coping with tragedy–and an extraordinary drama of marriage, family, war, and nation.

A percentage of the proceeds from this book will be donated to the Bob Woodruff Family Fund for Traumatic Brain Injury.

TOTALLY ENJOYED THE CD OF THIS BOOK. A HEARTFELT STORY OF LOVE, PAIN AND RECOVERY.

5 out of 5 stars Up from the trenches.......2007-09-29

This is a story of remarkable courage and love. Medicine and therapy have come a long way, but the personal strength of one person doing the hard work, and another staying by their side, is (I believe) what brings people back to a life worth living after so tremendous a trajedy. 5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever read!.......2007-09-26

What a wonderful & informative book. I really enjoyed all of the background information. It was a very touching love story. Having gone through 3 brain surgeries myself and my daughter's brain surgery also, gave me a fraction of knowledge on the recovering brain, but the book certainly gives an abundance of information. I've always thought Bob was absolutely fantastic, but I really enjoyed Lee's side of the story. Bravo and Good bless you both Bob & Lee!!!

3 out of 5 stars Interesting book.......2007-09-09

Interesting book - I read it because I was curious what had happened to Bob Woodruff after his injury, because the of the lack of information regarding his condition. It is interesting to me that insiders in the media can control what information gets out about them personally; however others are not so fortunate - their names, faces and not-so-flattering images are splashed across news screens every day.

The book was interesting, but I felt that Lee Woodruff ends up protraying herself as a selfish wife who is annoyed first at her husband's career and then annoyed at the inconvenience his injury caused their family. She describes herself several times as a "single parent" because Bob travelled so much. As a real-life single parent, this completely offended me. A single parent not only cares for their children alone, they also support them alone. A single parent is not a wife of a guy with a six-figure salary who happens to work a lot. If Lee had left these comments out, the book would have been much more palatable.

Book Description

Brigitte Gabriel lost her childhood to militant Islam. In 1975 she was ten years old and living in Southern Lebanon when militant Muslims from throughout the Middle East poured into her country and declared jihad against the Lebanese Christians. Lebanon was the only Christian influenced country in the Middle East, and the Lebanese Civil War was the first front in what has become the worldwide jihad of fundamentalist Islam against non-Muslim peoples. For seven years, Brigitte and her parents lived in an underground bomb shelter. They had no running water or electricity and very little food; at times they were reduced to boiling grass to survive. Because They Hate is a political wake-up call told through a very personal memoir frame. Brigitte warns that the US is threatened by fundamentalist Islamic theology in the same way Lebanon was- radical Islam will stop at nothing short of domination of all non-Muslim countries. Gabriel saw this mission start in Lebanon, and she refuses to stand silently by while it happens here. Gabriel sees in the West a lack of understanding and a blatant ignorance of the ways and thinking of the Middle East. She also points out mistakes the West has made in consistently underestimating the single-mindedness with which fundamentalist Islam has pursued its goals over the past thirty years. Fiercely articulate and passionately committed, Gabriel tells her own story as well as outlines the history, social movements, and religious divisions that have led to this critical historical conflict.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Informed!!!.......2007-10-19

It is refreshing to read a book that is written by a person who experienced first-hand the things to which she addressed. I consider myself a person who is well educated (3 masters degrees), well traveled (67 countries), and a lifetime of experience (approaching 80 years). Brigette's book should be read by every person who appreciates living in the United States. The book is truly an "eye-opener!" I encourage you to get the book, read it, and take the time to comprehend what it says. It will probably change your life!!! Rev. Floyd Lewis

5 out of 5 stars Arresting autobiography and a warning to the West.......2007-10-18

This disturbing book is similar in structure to Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Now They Call Me Infidel by Nonie Darwish, being part autobiography and part warning to the West. The autobiographical section deals with the author's childhood in Lebanon which was happy and idyllic until the war broke out in 1975. Her family experienced seven years of hell as the political war soon became a religious war against Christians waged by the PLO and Lebanese radical Islamists.

It became a nightmare of murder, atrocity and destruction. She also witnessed at first hand how the terrorists manipulate the media, for example by deliberately launching missiles from amongst civilians then blaming Israel for the retaliation that followed. They played the victim card very well, exploiting the clueless or complicit mass media at every turn. A good analysis of this phenomenon is available in The Other War: Israelis, Palestinians and the Struggle for Media Supremacy by Stephanie Gutmann. When the Israelis invaded in 1982, the family finally managed to escape the horror by finding refuge in Israel. There they experienced kindness and compassion; she eventually became a journalist, married an American and moved to the USA.

The second part examines the history of the global jihad and how its hydra heads are sprouting in the West. The author considers Lebanon the early testing ground for the global ambitions of the Jihadis. In this section she delves into the Koran and compares the Western with the Islamist concepts of, among others: truth, life and human dignity. Pointing out the major differences, she shows how the radicals are using Western values like tolerance, the rule of law and free speech against the West. What happened in Lebanon is starting to happen in Europe and the USA while the demonization of Israel and the USA is getting worse in the mass media of the Islamic world. For gruesome examples of this, please see Peace: The Arabian Caricature of Anti-Semitic Imagery by Arieh Stav.

Ignorance and political correctness are contributing to the escalating danger and the fifth column in our midst are those self-loathing westerners - mostly tenured termites in academia - who blame the democracies and talk piously of the "legitimate" grievances of the terrorists. The author says we must not appease but face facts: their grievances include our freedom of speech and religion, democracy, the rule of law and the gender equality in our societies. She also claims that moderate Muslim organizations in the USA are not as moderate as they pretend. A very important point Gabriel makes is that although most Muslims are peaceful, the religion is not. Islamic Imperialism: A History by Efraim Karsh and The Truth About Muhammad by Robert Spencer explore the historical facts in more detail.

The book concludes with recommendations for policymakers in the West, such as the banning of hate education where it is occurring now, vigilant border and immigration controls, security profiling of radical organizations and a serious effort to find and harness alternative energy sources. Other warnings to the West include The Force of Reason by Oriana Fallaci, Londonistan by Melanie Phillips, Unholy Alliance: Radical Islam and the American Left by David Horowitz, Menace in Europe by Claire Berlinski and While Europe Slept: How Radical Islam is Destroying the West from Within by Bruce Bawer. On account of her first hand experience, Brigitte Gabriel's book is a must-read for all those who care about the future of our civilization.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST read for every American who lives his country!.......2007-10-17

I challenge every American to view this book diligently with an open mind as to how quickly this hate has invaded our country already and now that it's here how sudden an attack will happen. We must stand up and do our part to stop this subtle killer by making our voice heard in our government, our schools our churches. This message MUST be heard! Briggett tells her story without fancy proper grammar, but with simplicity for any age to read. There's no doubt she is real, her story is real and her heart is not about selling a book, it's about you, your family and this country. May we wake up and take back our freedom to love and live.

5 out of 5 stars Glad I Don't Live In A Moslem Country.......2007-10-14

"Because They Hate" is one eye opening book regarding the real agenda of the militant Moslems. The Koran is not now and never was a peaceful book and neither was the Moslem faith ever a peaceful religion. The "militant" Moslems are out to conquor the whole world and make it Moslem. The big Satan (the United States) and the Little Satan (Israel) are first on it's list to destroy.

A women definately doesn't want to live in a radical Moslem country. They can't go anywhere with out their husband's approval. Also, they have to have their whole body covered when in public. Beating your wife black and blue when she disobeys you is endorsed by the clerics or religeous leaders and is often shown on television as a good thing to do. Also, if a women is suspected of not being a virgin, she is to be killed to save the family's honor.

The author, Brigette Gabriel is a Southern Lebonese Christian, who married an American and now lives in the United States. The author lived amongst the Moslems in Lebonon, which makes the book an insider's look at the Moslem agenda. That fact alone made it the best book I have read on the subject of the Moslem religion. The well written readable style of the book added to it's appeal.

Gabriel tells about the horrors of the cival war in Lebonon and how she lived with her parents in a bomb shelter for seven years. She tells how the kind but naive Lebonese tried to help the Palestinian Moslem refugees only to have them go through Christian towns slaughtering Christians and bombing their homes. Finally the Christians had enough and fought back, which stated the Cival War. When Israel came to the aid of the Lebonese Christians and brought an end to the war, most of the world criticised her humanitarian actions.

This book made me to glad to be an American. While we haven't been perfect on the cival rights front, we have had our plantations and still have reservations, which are not to be downplayed, our worst abuses are nothing in comparison to the hate filled brutality of the Moslems who follow the Koran. As the author makes so clear, Americans with our western civilized way of thinking and value system, have a very difficult time understanding the insanely brutal mindset of the militant Moslems. When giving the reason for their brutality, the author explained that it was becuase they are taught to hate from the moment of birth that they are so sadistic. Even though many Moslems claim to be more moderate in their beliefs, they rarely if ever oppose the radical's viewpoints or actions. This is true even of the moderate Moslems who live in American where it would be safe to take stand.

5 out of 5 stars good, impressive story.......2007-10-14

Brigitte makes an outstandig job telling about what happened, to her, her family and the christian communities in South Lebanon. I always knew the story as the christian being the mean and holding the economics, this what we have been told in Italy in the 70's and 80's. There is much more behind all this, Brigitte brings some facts and accounts in such a natural and practical way. What happened in Lebanon in the 70's is the natural birth of the wave of hate and killing that caused the infamous 9/11.

4 out of 5 stars It is a tool which may be of help .......2007-06-07

This work is a tool which may be of help to you as a writer. It is written in its introductory overview pages with , what seems to me, good sense and understanding. There is a lot of good advice about how to query, and where to look for markets, and how in general to approach the whole business of pursuing 'sales' of work. It is not a book which can tell you truly about how to write in a deep or interesting or uniquely individual way. That is not it's purpose.
But again I think it can be of help to many.
A couple of reservations from my own area of interest. Once they had a separate listing in the index on a topic which specially interested me "Judaism" . Now the publishers on Judaism are mixed up with the general Religion publishers.
I searched a couple of publishing houses I am thinking to send manuscripts to. The information provided was extremely scanty . But then again 'Writer's Market' does remind its user to supplement it by searching the websites of the publishers' listed.
Again it gives the rules and the etiquette for proper submission, gives information on pricing. It also includes some individual success stories from different areas of writing.
On the whole for the writer eager to sell work this is a work which truly may help.

3 out of 5 stars Basic information for fiction and non-fiction writers.......2007-05-17

I found the Writer's Market 2007 Deluxe Edition by Robert Lee Brewer to be informative; however, I had already located another publication that led me to the sources that I sought for promoting MY book.
Nonetheless, the Writer's Market is now a part of my book publishing/marketing reference resources collection.
Also, regardless of which book/magazine used as a source of information, it is ultimately up to the individual(s) to do the "leg work," or delegate the efforts to someone/others, in their particular promotion efforts.
At any rate, I believe that the book is worth purchasing.

It's a valuable research tool, and one that I encourage all of my students to purchase when they embark upon their writing careers.

Dave Eggers is a terrifically talented writer; don't hold his cleverness against him. What to make of a book called A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius: Based on a True Story? For starters, there's a good bit of staggering genius before you even get to the true story, including a preface, a list of "Rules and Suggestions for Enjoyment of This Book," and a 20-page acknowledgements section complete with special mail-in offer, flow chart of the book's themes, and a lovely pen-and-ink drawing of a stapler (helpfully labeled "Here is a drawing of a stapler:").

But on to the true story. At the age of 22, Eggers became both an orphan and a "single mother" when his parents died within five months of one another of unrelated cancers. In the ensuing sibling division of labor, Dave is appointed unofficial guardian of his 8-year-old brother, Christopher. The two live together in semi-squalor, decaying food and sports equipment scattered about, while Eggers worries obsessively about child-welfare authorities, molesting babysitters, and his own health. His child-rearing strategy swings between making his brother's upbringing manically fun and performing bizarre developmental experiments on him. (Case in point: his idea of suitable bedtime reading is John Hersey's Hiroshima.)

The book is also, perhaps less successfully, about being young and hip and out to conquer the world (in an ironic, media-savvy, Gen-X way, naturally). In the early '90s, Eggers was one of the founders of the very funny Might Magazine, and he spends a fair amount of time here on Might, the hipster culture of San Francisco's South Park, and his own efforts to get on to MTV's Real World. This sort of thing doesn't age very well--but then, Eggers knows that. There's no criticism you can come up with that he hasn't put into A.H.W.O.S.G. already. "The book thereafter is kind of uneven," he tells us regarding the contents after page 109, and while that's true, it's still uneven in a way that is funny and heartfelt and interesting.

All this self-consciousness could have become unbearably arch. It's a testament to Eggers's skill as a writer--and to the heartbreaking particulars of his story--that it doesn't. Currently the editor of the footnote-and-marginalia-intensive journal McSweeney's (the last issue featured an entire story by David Foster Wallace printed tinily on its spine), Eggers comes from the most media-saturated generation in history--so much so that he can't feel an emotion without the sense that it's already been felt for him. What may seem like postmodern noodling is really just Eggers writing about pain in the only honest way available to him. Oddly enough, the effect is one of complete sincerity, and--especially in its concluding pages--this memoir as metafiction is affecting beyond all rational explanation. --Mary Park

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-10-10

Dave Eggers has said he wouldn't recommend starting a writing career with a memoir as open and honest as this one but I beg to differ. His open honesty about his life is what made me an everlasting fan. To use your own life to show others they are not alone in this insane world is the greatest gift a writer can give.
If you haven't read this book yet, you are missing something great in your life.

1 out of 5 stars a heartbreaking work of staggering genius.......2007-09-30

My high school book club wanted to read this book. It's a Catholic school and 2 students loved the book. I foraged through the whole thing looking for topics that would work with my students. Maybe I'm a prude but with so many expletives and other objectionable topics in this junker, I thought I could be hauled off to the "big house" if we read this book.

Yes, Dave Eggers has done a truthful account of his life and I did feel for him at times, but the ending really made me feel ripped off and used.

1 out of 5 stars I tried to get my money back.......2007-09-18

I suggested this book to my book club without having read it first. Big mistake! All of us hated this book so much, that we wrote a letter to the publisher asking for our money back. Perhaps we don't understand Gen-Xers, but it seemed to all of us to be a book about NOTHING. At least Seinfeld made us laugh!

We now have a rule that no book is to be recommended to the club without having first read it yourself!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, one of the best books I've read all year.......2007-08-24

Absolutely wonderful. This is without a doubt one of the best books I've read all year. Eggers' self-referential humor and heartbreaking asides weave a tapestry worthy of praise. I highly recommend this book to almost any audience. Audacious and thought provoking. An affirmation of living life and a meditation on mortality. It is probably the best example of what it is like to be a single twenty-something living in the U.S. in the modern era. Definitely worth the time.

5 out of 5 stars Please read this book!.......2007-08-21

What an incredible account of the author's pain, hope, love, fears, hatred. It's the menoir of author, Dave Eggers, showing his life as guardian of his young brother after the death of their parents.

I don't think I have ever read anything so honest and stark in its emotional content. Particularily being a first-hand personal account of the events, the story shows the jumbles mess of emotions coming with such responsibility and stress.

Please do yourself a favor and read the book!

Book Description

Mississippi Sissy is the stunning memoir from Kevin Sessums, a celebrity journalist who grew up scaring other children, hiding terrible secrets, pretending to be Arlene Frances, and running wild in the South. As he grew up in Forest, Mississippi, befriended by the family maid, Mattie May, he became a young man who turned the word sissy on its head, just as his mother taught him. In Jackson, he is befriended by Eudora Welty and journalist Frank Hains, but when Hains is brutally murdered in his antebellum mansion, Kevin's long road north towards celebrity begins. In a memoir that echoes bestsellers like The Liars Club, Kevin Sessums brings to life the pungent American south of the 1960s and the world of the strange little boy who grew there.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A sincere memoir.......2007-09-04

This is a surprisingly enjoyable memoir, perhaps because it's the first thing he has ever written about himself that is actually supposed to be about him.

5 out of 5 stars Honest and Heartbreaking..........2007-08-13

Not one false note in this true story of growing up gay in a less then ideal environment. I identified with Sessums on many levels; being born gay in a straight world, struggling with religious and cultural issues, and the confusion I felt early on from my "loving" family and the hatred I felt from various members of it toward anything diffrent.

Beautifully, lyricly written... I'm in awe.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Work.......2007-07-31

The book was heart-wrenching, humorous, and philosophical. Sometimes within the same paragraph. It mines new depths of emotional injustice and human resilience. Ultimately, this is a book about triumph of the spirit.

4 out of 5 stars Bravo, Sissy!.......2007-07-30

I wonder how Sessum's memoir would have been different had his parents lived. Would he have written it? Would he have remembered so vividly? Would he have been so unflinchingly honest about his father? As it is, his early memories have been crystallized into this stark and searing memoir washed with the languor of the Mississippi south.

Despite being orphaned, Sessums doesn't dwell only on loss, but also provides us hysterical scenes such as the one where he plays "doctor" with a local tomboy who pulls down her pants and tells him to check out her "crawdad hole." Or when he wants to be called "Arlene" because he's obsessed with a TV game show personality with that name. At one point, Kevin wants to dress up as the Wicked Witch for Halloween. His Grandma refuses, so he throws a temper tantrum and the only way to calm Kevin down is to give in to him. "Arlene, stop it!!" screams Grandma, and Kevin quiets down. With his mother's dying blessing, he is allowed to dress as the Wicked Witch for Halloween. In rural Mississippi. Try to imagine.

Pop culture personalities ("Arlene Francis" for example) are plentiful and are all a generation ahead of me, so when they came up, I felt out of the loop. He also left a few remaining questions (What was the motive behind the Hains murder?) Also, oddly, Sessums planted certain reveals later than they actually happened--a sort of literary flashback (the "promise" he made to his father, or his father's final haunting words to him) which I feel would've packed more of an emotional punch had they been placed when and where they happened. That's not to say "Mississippi Sissy" doesn't pack an emotional punch. It packs plenty.

His grandparents' maid, Matty Mae, is a black woman whose only hope for a better life was found in two beautiful words: Sidney Poitier. She ultimately disappears because there's not much hope in the world when a sensitive sissy boy like Kevin can call her precious Poitier a "Nigger." The sissy and the black maid reunite in a cotton field for the most heartbreaking scene in the book.

From his mother, as she lay dying, Sessums learned to love words and language, and ultimately to accept his nature. It was his mother who taught him not to cower when people called him a "Sissy" because look what a beautiful word it is -- look at the strong arms in that "Y." Look at the beautiful curves of those "S"'s!

So it is easy to see that Sessum's had no choice but to become a writer. He was destined to write this haunting memoir for his own vindication, for his family, and for all the others who grew up feeling to the left of center. That is to say, for all of us.

5 out of 5 stars Memoir with style.......2007-07-23

The best thing about this memoir is that it is well written. Pages full of childhood atrocities are not enough to carry a memoir, I need more. There are no atrocities here, just the typical horrors of growing up and much more. The writing style carries you there, the people, places, events, and emotions are vividly portrayed and captivating. Some southern writers just have a knack for story telling and Sessums is one.
My one complaint is that the sex scenes were just too much information but I could not even take away a star, they rest is just that good. I look forward to the next offering from this author.

5 out of 5 stars Children's Writer's Market.......2007-04-04

As a writer in the juvenile field, I recommend Children's Writers and Illustrator's Market to all who are beginning children's authors. Writer's Market covers all kinds of publishing from books and magazines to textbooks and contests, including children's books. Most of it is not of interest to someone focused only on juvenile writing.
Children's Writers and Illustrator's Market is invaluable because it not only lists the many worldwide markets for children's books, but it gives specific information on writing for children, lists the types of books each publisher puts out, and includes tips by publishers on what they require and expect at their publishing house.
This is a book every beginning children's writer would do well to study long before they have completed a manuscript. Check it out at the library to see how helpful it is. If the library has no copy, suggest that it would be a great service to the public to add one to the shelves.

5 out of 5 stars The best source for the would be writer or illustrator........2007-03-24

I've recommended this book countless times for patrons during my twenty year library career and now I am using it for myself. Not only are there helpful, instructive articles by professionals about the publishing industry but the 750 listings help to narrow down the search for a publisher, rep or agent. It may seem daunting at first but the editors do most of the work for you. Getting work published is a send and wait game so sending the work to a firm ready to look at your work makes the process easier. CWIM includes professional conference as well as agents, art reps and of course publishers and magazines.

Anyone who is a Writer will tell you the Writer's Market is the bible and if they haven't, I am telling you now. This is a Children's Writers & Illustrators bible. Everything you will ever need to get started is all in this book. I am currently writing a children's book and will be illustrating it myself. I must credit this book for giving me the necessary resources. They even include tips from published Writiers to motivate you on your path to getting that manuscript out. It is easy to read, easy to find exactly what I am looking for in a compact size I can take anywhere. I absolutely love it! Thank you!

Although this Bible is not made for hardcore word-for-word study (the NIV in itself is more of a dynamic equivalence translation anyways), all the helpful commentaries and tools inside are generally fresh, practical, and accessible to any Christian. Anyone who can use a personal guide through even the most obscure passages in Scriptures will be able to appreciate everything this Bible has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Maintenance Manager.......2007-10-10

I had previously purchase the manual before this one came out when I had the 2000 BMW model, BMW and cars have changed and so has the Manuals. A lot of good information for "do it yourself". Very impress with the material.

5 out of 5 stars Cheap insurance.......2007-10-05

I bought this manual soon after purchasing my '99 E46 323i. I wanted to have a manual ready so that when a problem did occur, I could immediately get to work. Last month, a crankshaft position sensor went wonky on me, and the book was there to help right away. I'm glad I had the Bently manual on my shelf. It had everything I needed to know, including torque specifications for when I was putting things back together. I probably saved a net $200, but I'll never know because I didn't even have to take the car in to the shop :).

If you have an E46, buy this manual.

As an aside, it's also pretty cool to learn about the ultra-sexy engine in the E46 M3.

5 out of 5 stars Must-have resource for E30 DIY'ers.......2007-09-05

If you plan on doing any DIY repairs or maintenance on your E30, you NEED this book. Although one can find many DIY websites on the Internet, this book is comprehensive - with wiring diagrams, torque values etc that are hard to find elsewhere.

Very exhaustive in detail, covers most commonly performed maintenance and repair procedures in easy to understand explanations and pictures. Major systems are also described in a manner that will appeal to first-time DIY'ers.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best...at a price.......2007-08-10

This is absolutely the BEST manual for the E46 BMW, but pricey at over $80. It's also huge, with over 1400 pages, though all of those are not dedicated to repair procedures. I would judge 40% of the heavy book to be electrical drawings and diagnostic codes. Maybe that's to be expected for a vehicle that has become so electronically complex. I would have preferred this be in a 2-volume format, so I could leave that last 40% on the bookshelf when working on the car.

I also bought the Haynes manual for the E46; 320 pages. Not nearly as complete, but at under $20, and a real bargain. I prefer having them both. I will easily recover the cost after the first job that allows me to do the work myself instead of taking the car to the shop. If I had to choose, dollar-for-dollar, the Haynes manual probably delivers greater value.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENTE!.......2007-06-29

This book is awesome. It was in excellent condition, and was excatly what I was looking for in terms of content!

"Long before it legally served me, the bar saved me," asserts J.R. Moehringer, and his compelling memoir The Tender Bar is the story of how and why. A Pulitzer-Prize winning writer for the Los Angeles Times, Moehringer grew up fatherless in pub-heavy Manhasset, New York, in a ramshackle house crammed with cousins and ruled by an eccentric, unkind grandfather. Desperate for a paternal figure, he turns first to his father, a DJ whom he can only access via the radio (Moehringer calls him The Voice and pictures him as "talking smoke"). When The Voice suddenly disappears from the airwaves, Moehringer turns to his hairless Uncle Charlie, and subsequently, Uncle Charlie's place of employment--a bar called Dickens that soon takes center stage. While Moehringer may occasionally resort to an overwrought metaphor (the footsteps of his family sound like "storm troopers on stilts"), his writing moves at a quick clip and his tale of a dysfunctional but tightly knit community is warmly told. "While I fear that we're drawn to what abandons us, and to what seems most likely to abandon us, in the end I believe we're defined by what embraces us," Moehringer says, and his story makes us believe it. --Brangien Davis

Great writing style although the attempts at humor & the similes/metaphors were ever so slightly overdone in my opinion
Filthy language through major sections:(

4 out of 5 stars Unusual Story.......2007-08-30

I'm not sure if I enjoyed the story or writing more. The story is disjointed like the life of the narrator, but the pages flow nicely and I'm very happy I read it.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Memoir of an Evolving Life.......2007-08-26

Moehringer uses the story of a bar as the setting for his own story, growing up on the fringes of respectable working class life and achieving a certain degree of success. The bar is where the fatherless Moehringer learns to be a man, surrounded by a collection of significantly flawed characters drawn from Manhasset's odd mix of upper and lower economic class. Unlike many tales of surmounting economic and social hurdles, Moehringer manages to keep himself and his achievements in the background. He focuses on the struggles and screw-ups and nicely captures the conflicts of class, peer group, and community that accompany many people's upward climb. In places like the blue collar side of Manhasset, upward mobility is something that is both encouraged and a source of threat. Moehringer had sense enough to recognize this and to recognize when his triumphs were a wedge and how the bar and its regulars could be an impediment to growing up and moving on. It's apparent that Moehringer's life is still one with missing pieces and struggles to come.

This appears to be one of the few Niman scholar books that doesn't run out of gas before the end.

1 out of 5 stars INSIPID.......2007-08-26

This is such a disappointing memoir! Most of the book is an account of this young Ivy Leaguer's pathetic on-again, off-again, puppy love tryst with his college age heart throb and his "struggles" to get passing grades. Such insipid writing is not worthy of note. Are we supposed to cry over this? I had enough but I kept waiting for more. I kept reading to the end hoping that some depth might develop. Unfortunately the book retained its shallow treatment page after page. Bring on the violins.
