We've all been advised to forgive and forget, but rarely has anyone suggested a way to reconcile without necessarily forgiving. I Thought We'd Never Speak Again does. It covers every sort of contention, from seemingly minor differences that can escalate over time to larger issues of abuse, neglect, and dysfunction.
Author Laura Davis (The Courage to Heal) once again comes from a very personal place in this book; she has slowly renewed relations with her mother's family after 10 years with no contact. As she interviews people and shares their stories, she uses the wisdom they've gained to illustrate numerous ways to reconcile--sometimes involving forgiveness and sometimes not. From the family who lost a member to a drunk driver or drive-by shooting to generations of kids on opposite sides of racial, religious, or political issues, the process of coming to peace is a lengthy one, marked by both pain and rewards.
Useful for adults who are dealing with personal issues or families trying to move beyond the emotional aftermath of 9/11, this loving and thoughtful book examines how we can all work together to achieve understanding. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
In her bestselling classic The Courage to Heal, Laura Davis helped millions heal from the pain of child sexual abuse. Now, in I Thought We'd Never Speak Again, she tackles another critical, emerging issue: reconciling relationships that have been damaged by betrayal, anger, and misunderstanding.
With clarity and compassion, Davis maps the reconciliation process through gripping first-person stories of people who have mended relationships in a wide variety of circumstances. In these pages, parents reconcile with children, embittered siblings reconnect, angry friends reunite, and war veterans and crime victims meet with their enemies. Davis weaves these powerful accounts with her own experiences reconciling with her mother after a long, painful estrangement.
Making a crucial distinction between reconciliation and forgiveness, Davis explains how people can make peace in relationships without necessarily forgiving past hurts. In addition to a special section called "Ideas for Reflection and Discussion," she includes a self-assessment quiz, "Are You Ready for Reconciliation?"
Whether you want to reconcile a relationship that has ended, improve a relationship that is difficult or distant, or learn the skills you need for dealing with the inevitable conflicts we all face in life, this book will teach you to mend troubled relationships and find peace.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating and disappointing.......2007-09-12
I find it fascinating that in one book (Courage to Heal), the author encourages supposed victims of sexual abuse (including those who "recover" memories of it) to BECOME estranged from their families, only now to put a book out that purports to help them to reconcile. Her publisher must be so happy with the profits that come from the fact that Courage to Heal practically makes this book required reading.
Great Book.......2007-05-12
Looking within to find answers to some of life's baggage and how to better accept people, situations and pain......great read
The irony is unbearable.......2005-11-01
How handy! Having bought for my daughter the book that practically destroyed our family (A Courage to Heal)on the recommendation of her inept therapist, now that my daughter is waking up from her nightmare of starvation and drug-induced hallucinations and recanting the horrifying, bizarre and provably false accusations she made under the influence of her therapist and a lesbian-feminist-incest-survivor support group, we can now buy the book that will put us all together again - from the same author. One stop shopping! One thing I'll say for Laura Davis - she sure is entrepreneurial.
I picked up this book in the bookstore, began reading through it and wanted to rip it apart. In this book Laura Davis almost suggests that she is prepared to admit her memories of her own incest may not be entirely accurate. Wow. That's just great. The person I feel truly sorry for (other than all the people damaged by idiot therapists using Courage to Heal as their manual)is Laura Davis' mother.
A must read for those estranged from family and good friends!.......2005-09-24
After reading this book I realized that much of what she had to say is common sense but when you live with the anger and hurt feelings daily. Common sense goes out the window nor do you always want to be the bigger stronger person.
It has been very helpful for me. This book made me realize that often times it is not about me and if those people in the stories who had bigger injuries done to them could forgive so can I. Forgiveness is the key and it allows you to let go of the anger and mend broken relationships.
I have recommended and loaned this book to friends, family, aquaintances and enemies.
Buy this book if you find yourself in this position. Happy reading!
Pure Genius.......2003-10-01
For the coauthor of The Courage to Heal to publish a how-to guide to reconciliation-- you just have to take off your hat in the presence of that kind of chutzpah.

Book Description
After spending fifteen years visiting and writing about thousands of bed and breakfasts, inns, hotels, and resorts for their critically acclaimed regional series On the Road Again with Mans Best Friend Dawn and Robert Habgood have used their expertise to write their first national, pet-oriented travel guide. The only national pet travel guide to combine so many choices with such detailed information.
In the U.S. edition of On the Road Again with Mans Best Friend, the Habgoods balance quality with quantity. With over 16,000 accommodations from mom-and-pop motels and B&Bs to expansive resorts and luxurious hotels you will always find an array of intriguing places to stay with your favorite canine or feline.
These are not bare bone lists. In fact, Each entry includes the name, address, telephone number, and web site address (when available), along with number of rooms and corresponding rates. "Pet Policies" give pet fees, pet size and weight limitations, as well as any pet amenities that are provided. "Creature Comforts" outline the establishments amenities and include an array of features ranging from VCRs, Jacuzzis, and wet bars to on-site restaurants, health clubs, and pools.
Their special logo indicates the finest and most unique whether it be a gracious Southern mansion, a Western dude ranch, a five-star resort, or an intimate seaside bed and breakfast. The Habgoods were very selective, highlighting only those that they personally visited or that received multiple reader recommendations. Those specially designated accommodations also receive a short, detailed review. Information is that of an insider, with inclusion based on merit. Please note that none of the accommodations has paid a fee for inclusion in this book.
Before picking up the telephone to reserve a room, read through the introduction. Here, the Habgoods discuss traveling with your pet, safety information, things you should bring for your pet, and what to do if she gets lost. The section, "Not All Rooms are Created Equal," provides the inside scoop on how to reserve the best rooms and questions to ask to make sure that you dont get shuffled into undesirable rooms because you are traveling with a pet. "Money Matters" give advice on how to find discounted room rates, as well as some of the hidden aspects of pet fees and deposits.
This is an amazing resource, comprising nearly 900 pages, and one that you will want to include in all your adventures. Whether youre traveling across the country, along the coasts, or to all 50 states, this tome will ensure an enjoyable trip down the road with your best friend or favorite feline.

Stick with the AAA guides.......2002-02-23
On the Road Again with Man's Best Friend suffers from a single, major fault: it does not rate the accommodations it lists. The AAA guides, on the other hand, contain basically the same information as On the Road AND include hotel/motel ratings. This is critical, because I don't want to end up at Bates Motel even if they DO permit pets. 8-}
On the Road Again with Man's Best Friend.......2000-12-29
This book was a complete waste of money! Last summer our family drove from Rhode Island to Washington State with our cat and two Golden Retrievers. NOT A SINGLE ESTABLISHMENT I CONTACTED FROM THIS BOOK TOOK PETS! Some of the motels I called told me that they have NEVER taken animals. Save your money and use AAA's Traveling With Your Pet. It's cheaper, and one heck of a lot more reliable.
How to travel with pets and not go insane!.......2000-08-19
My husband is in the Navy and we move every 18 months; On the Road with Man's Best Friend is an absolute essential. We have gone cross country twice not to mention many, many car trips in-between and have found the book to be extremely reliable. A great tool for plans that can change, it has all the essential info - How many pets, If a deposit is required, address info and phone number. All you need is a cell (or pay) phone and a couple of pooches! I would never take a trip without this book with me even if we are traveling without the dogs. A great resource!
Superlative resource.......2000-06-23
In planning a cross-country trip with my dog (and wife too) for Summer 2000, this proved an invaluable resource. It lists thousands of pet-friendly places to stay in virtually every city and major town in all 50 states. Although the entries for each inn are very basic, they hit the high points: address, phone, web site, pet policy, and basic amenities. Places they have visited or for which they have received multiple reader recommendations are starred. I also like the fact that they cover a wide range of establishments, ranging from cottages to motels to bed-and-breakfasts to top-of-the-line hotels. Its not really a travel guide you'll need, because the information is too abbreviated, but it is a very valuable reference tool. Highly recommended.
Essential for traveling with pets........2000-06-13
If you recently adopted a pet, this book is essential if you plan to travel with your pet. All of the hotel, airline, trains, campground regulations are discussed. The documentation and supplies needed are indicated. As well as, a discussion, on a personal level, of the possible hazards and pitfalls associated with pet travel.
Book Description
Featuring comprehensive listings on pet-friendly accommodations, these guides allow travelers to share their vacations with their favorite canine companions. Each independent review lists contact information, number of rooms, corresponding rates, details on specific features and amenities, as well as character, ambience, cuisine (for both pets and people), and a history of each establishment. The United States guide features more than 18,000 listings of accommodations as well as rules and regulations for taking a pet into all the state and national parks in the country.
Customer Reviews:
Where's the Maps?.......2004-05-19
The main reason I purchased the book was because I wanted the Hotel locations show on road maps. There isn't a single map in the entire book. For some reason I assumed this aide would be included in the printed version. In larger cites this would be a great help as I try to avoid going out of my way when traveling to find a place to stay. Its basically an outdated printed version of the Web site. Great to have along if your travel plans change and you have no internet connection but of limited use if you do.
A Great Start.......2004-02-17
We used this book (along with Petswelcome and the Internet) to help find accommodations for ourselves and our rambunctious German Shepherd puppy during a move across country. It was extremely helpful in finding possible places to stay in cities that we were not familiar with. Of course, we called all of the places to confirm that they took pets, the rules and the extra fees, before making a decision on any one place. Each place we ended up at was pretty well described in the book and our dog loved his first road trip!
Great Guide with Free On-Line Updates.......2004-01-25
We use the book often, and successfully because we take the authors' advice which is to call ahead and confirm that the property still takes pets. We also go to their website (www.petsonthego.com) to check for updates as well. This is the only pet travel guide, that we know of, to offer both a print version and online version for updates. It really makes it easy for us.
I work in the hospitality industry and know that hotels change policies on a whim -- I think Pets on the Go does a great job of responding to those changes by offering both an easy to use print guide with updated online information! Thanks.
Dated Information.......2003-11-19
I took this and another pet travel book on a cross country trip to my folks house with my dog. I found this to be the least useful, as many of the entries were wrong (it was a HoJo, not a Ramada as listed) and the information was wrong (there was a $10/night charge and the book didn't mention it). All in all I wasn't too impressed.
Pets on the Go -- Book and Website are a Perfect Combination.......2003-09-21
This book covers it all for us -- tells us about pet friendly places to stay, gives us the website addresses to check them out in advance and provides us with the details about pet policies and amenities. We use a combo of the book and the Pets on the Go website (www.petsonthego.com), as the book is easy to look through and carry with us, while the site has book updates and is packed with other information about pet travel trends, cool new hotels, and recreational activities.
Good find!

Customer Reviews:
Spiritual Context Not Advertised.......2005-12-30
I bought this book for my husband, when he took a new job requiring lots of travel. While there is lots of good insight to be had, the book has a strong fundamental Christian bias that was not publisized. My husband is turned off by all things religious, so was taken aback at what he felt was a hidden spiritual agenda behind it. We were disappointed that someone hasn't written a book on this important topic without the religious bias.
Highly recommended for New BizTravelers or Road Warriors!.......2000-11-19
I've always had pains of guilt when I would travel to some great place and have room service and maid service..... and leave my family behind. The cover of the book says more to the truth of trying to stay connected to our families than any human resource manual from work. When you take a job that travels... h/r doesn't tell you the effect on your marriage!
This book had such great insight to the biz traveler and the effects on their marriage! We BizTravelers think we have it hard while on the road but the family you leave behind is in a hard spot too! This book helps address the biz traveler's concerns as well as the family left behind.
I HIGHLY recommend this book to a new biz traveler. This book could save your patience and marriage! The author tells it like it is.
Great tool for those who travel and love people who travel.......1999-08-03

Great Resource for the busy traveler!.......1999-02-24
As I read this book, I kept thinking, how does this guy know all this? It's right on the money page after page! I gave 20 copies to friends who travel, and they all loved it!

Laugh out loud travel stories!.......2007-08-08
Hooray for the next collection of travel stories, this bunch even funnier than the last. Clever, witty stories from famous names, but the real stars of the collection come from the less well-known . . . the likes of Janna Cawrse and Susan Reinhardt, to name a few. Want some chuckles? Grab a copy and check out "Thar She Blows!"

Book Description
Keith B. Brown On the Road Again is essential reading for any church that wants to move from "maintenance" to "mission." If your church dreams of a larger membership, staff, or facility, the Rev. Canon Keith B. Brown's fresh, groundbreaking insights--drawn from his experience as an international businessman and diocesan executive--will show you how to take the best of current business practices and translate them into nothing less than Spirit-driven agents of the Great Commission. Brown argues that the church never should shy away from numbers but--as is amply demonstrated in the Acts of the Apostles--should embrace the kinds of accounting implicit in the terms evangelism and stewardship. Writing in a style that laity and clergy will find equally accessible, Canon Brown introduces several future-oriented business tools: growth budgeting, forecasting, and breakeven analysis. Easy-to-follow exercises, complete with worksheets, ensure that the reader masters each new step in the process. Readers who feel chronically insecure when grappling with "business" matters will be constantly reassured by Canon Brown's determination, passion, and humor, and also by the amusing illustrations of nationally syndicated cartoonist, Stephen Bentley.
"The combination of management ideas in stewardship will be helpful to many." The Rt. Rev. Claude E. Payne Diocese of Texas

Customer Reviews:
Terrific Issue! .......2007-02-18
This Granta issue was tops! We Went to Saigon, a story about a woman who visited her father in Saigon during the Vietnam War. She never knew what he did, but he said jokingly that he was a CIA Agent. True or Not?
I enjoyed the story about Natasha, a Ukrainian woman desperate to leave Ukraine and marry an American, who eventually dumps a guy because he is a big fan of Bruce Springsteen, not one of her favorite musicians by a long shot.
Another article persuades that North by Northwest is not about the character Cary Grant plays in the movie, so much as his suit. An interesting concept.
Other great stories about traveling in Russia, Italy and Turkey are also included. A really great read.
