New emotions, new friends, and physical changes make the teen years hard enough to deal with, but when someone close dies, life as a teen can seem almost unbearable. I Will Remember You encourages young readers to explore the "long, winding tunnel" of the grieving process, to keep going in the face of terrible loss and sadness. Through stirring words by well-known personalities (E.B. White, Emily Dickinson, Rainer Maria Rilke, Dr. Seuss, Mother Teresa, Woody Allen, even Pooh and Piglet!), as well as from fellow teens who have lost a loved one, grieving teens can begin to take comfort that they're not alone.
Each chapter helps readers explore different aspects of grief, such as denial, ritual, remembering, mourning a stranger, and anniversary "aftershocks." Renowned grief counselor Elena Lister, M.D., offers advice based on her many years of professional experience, and author Laura Dower presents dozens of creative, helpful exercises to move through the experience of loss. As Dower writes in her preface, this book does not provide "the 'right' answers or tell you how or what to feel." Instead, it's more like a "grief map. It helps you to see the path, but it can't tell you where to go." One of the most useful (and impressive) elements of the book is the very sensitive section on what not to say to someone who is grieving (and possible responses to these statements): "You'll get over it. Do you want to tell me when?" "Your mother/father lived a full life. How do you define full?" Of course, Dower also includes a list of more thoughtful, appropriate statements: "I am sorry. How can I help?" "What was your relationship like?" With the gentle help of this guidebook, grieving teens may just make it a little farther through that long, winding tunnel. (Ages 13 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Customer Reviews:
An amazing book.......2004-02-16
I was 14 years old when my father passed away suddenly. My mom bought me this book about a month after he passed away. It helped me so much. It guided me through much of the first year or so. It was by my side when I went through the first easter, his birthday and my parents anniversary without him. I don't know what I would have done without this book. I would highly recommend this to any teen who has lost someone close to them. Or to any adult wanted to understand what teens go through after losing someone close.
An Inspiring, Important and Beautifully-Done Book.......2001-07-19
I Will Remember You addresses one of the most-overlooked and difficult issues in growing up, offering readers inspiring and important ideas to deal with grief. Although this is a guidebook for teens, as a parent, I found the information incredibly helpful in helping my children understand the grieving process. Dower's accesssible, well-written passages--along with the real-life writing from teens--illuminates the feelings associated with getting through grieving. This is a terrific resource for parents, teachers, librarians and yes, teenagers.
As if it spoke to me.......2001-06-07
My father died three years ago when I was thirteen. I have never read a book that depicts my feelings so accurately. It is ideal for any teen that is overcoming grief but also for any parent who wishes to understand the grief that their teenager is dealing with.
Coming from a contributor.......2001-05-04
I was a contributor to this book and had known about this project a couple years ago when I wrote my piece. I wasn't sure what I was getting into. I thought it was probably just another Chicken Soup like book. However, I was wrong. This book is the most amazing thing I've seen for teens who are suffering with grief and at the time I was going through everything I would have given my soul for a book like this. I am really proud to have been a part of this project and I found it helpful even today. I hope a lot of grief stricken teens pick this book up. It is truly amazing.

Grandma book great keepsake.......2007-01-20
My granddaughter bought me the book for Christmas 2 years ago, and it took a lot of memory work, research into family history, and asking my own mother to get the answers to the dozens of questions it asked.
When it was finished, though, it was, indeed, a real keepsake journal, and I gave the completed book back to my granddaughter for Christmas this year. In fact, I ordered 2 more books for my two other granddaughters.
It was a lot of writing, some of the questions were redundant, and some questions didn't leave enough space for an adequate answer. Otherwise, it was great.

I Remember.......2005-05-03
"Do You Remember" really does take you back. It can best be described as a colorful TV collage in book form. From the Hardy Boys and Lawrence Welk, to Monty Hall and the infamous Academy Awards streaker, they're all here to jog some memories. The authors did a nice job of pulling together the expected (i.e. Donny & Marie and All in the Family) as well as the obscure and unexepected (i.e. Mason Reese, the Underwood Deviled Ham kid). Having the inside front and back covers resemble pages from TV Guide from September 1974 (when Gilligan and The Match Game dominated the air waves) was a clever touch as well.
If you grew up watching TV in the 70s and 80s, you'll get a kick out of this book.
major flashbacks!!!!!.......2005-03-09
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this little bit of nostalgia!!!! I have bought it for a few of my friends and we just love groaning over the things we thought were "too cool" way back when......
we need more of these type of fun, light, crazy books!!! one question, though...whaddya call those yellow thingys that you put in the hole of a 45 so you can play it?????????.........
BRINGS BACK MEMORIES.......2003-05-26
This is a really good book that covers it all.. almost.I'd say it's worth buying and it has tons of info from the 70's and some from 80's- i just expected it to have a lil more info from 80's but other than that it is good and has lots of cool stuff in it. It definetly brought back lots of memories and reminded me of things i havnt thought of in years and stuff ive totally forgoten about yet i enjoyed as a kid. It's a good read with some really cool facts and pictures.
Awesome book.......1999-08-30
I love this book! It really took me back - I had completely forgotten about stuff like the Five Chinese Brothers and Lip Smackers.
this is really a fun book.......1999-03-23
A friend of mine gave me this book on my 30th birthday and it was one of the best presents I ever received. It was fun and the book really took me back to some of the best times of my life! I highly recommend this book for it's memory jogging effect.

Book Description
Children are often curious about blindness, but are told that it is impolite to pose their questions to a blind person. Not so, says Sally Hobart Alexander, who lost her sight at the age of twenty-six. In this informative book, illustrated with photos of Sally and her family, the author answers thirteen thought-provoking questions that children have asked her, for example, "If your eyes don't see, do they work at all?" "How do you write?" and "Has being blind changed you?"
"This book is sure to interest young people curious about how the blind interact with their world." (Booklist)
"A witty, wise, inspiring book." (Kirkus Reviews, pointer review)
Customer Reviews:
Honest answers to good questions about blindness.......2001-05-21
Kids sure ask better questions than adults a lot of the time! Good thing that Mrs Alexander is prepared to answer them in an informative way.
She explains how she lost her sight completely in her mid twenties because of a mysterious disease causing blood vessels in her retinas to bleed. Sally doesn't gloss over the grieving she went through and the difficulties she faced, and the need for constant concentration even now. But the book has an optimistic tone, explaining how she met her husband on a blind date (she notes with irony), and how her life as a wife, mother, writer and even gardener is very fulfilling.
There are interesting insights how blind people function in a sighted world, e.g. accessing information through Braille, talking books or the Optacon (optical-tactile converter), travelling with a cane or guide dogs, cooking, choosing clothes, and much else. She even discusses her visit to a school for deaf kids and whether it's better to be blind or deaf, and the effect of blindness on her religious faith (increasing it) and that of her loved ones (the opposite effect).
Learn About Blindness.......2000-10-11
Author Sally Hobart Alexander does remember the color blue because she lost her sight completely at age 26. In this book, she answers 13 questions children have asked her about going blind. Alexander's honesty and wit discussing how she met her husband, ways her two sighted children played tricks on her and how she handles day to day activities, allows the reader to understand how a blind person lives a happy, fulfilling life. A good choice for a 4th or 5th grader. Included in this book is an activity, "What does it feel like to be blind?" also a note about blindness, a list of resources and an index. The black and white photographs of Alexander, her family and innovative gadgets are set on black, white or gray backgrounds.
A Parallel Universe.......2000-04-07
You know that you're not supposed to be nosey and ask questions about someone's disability. But Sally Hobart Alexander, the author of this book, travels around the country giving talks to people about her experience with her blindness. She invites, and receives, a lot of questions from children and teens, and in this book she tries to answer some of them. In some respects, it is a very satisfying book, because it calls attention to the millions of little details of ordinary life that usually require eyesight. How do you know what's in the refrigerator? How do you know what clothes match? Many of us don't consider that you need to face the person you are talking to, or where to extend our hands for a handshake. Because Alexander was not born blind (she lost her sight gradually over two years, when she was in her twenties), she is aware of all of the differences, and she is generous in sharing her experiences. But this is not just a book about the details of living without sight. This book also shares some of the emotional experience of losing vision--the frustration, disappointment, and anger Alexander had to work through. And then the positive feelings of triumph, as she learned that happiness and success do not depend on the ability to see with your eyes. Basically an upbeat, interesting story, I found the writing a little weak. But I would recommend this book strongly for anyone who is struggling with any kind of disability, or anyone who is simply curious about blindness, because it is truly inspirational and frank.

Remember the cell phones that weighed enough to serve double duty as a bludgeon? What about the first time you saw an Apple IIsi, or heard the THX sound check? And who could forget the inimitable hiss and whirr of an 8-track loading up? The ultranostalgic team behind Do You Remember TV? is ready to take you back on another sentimental road trip down memory lane with their latest, Do You Remember Technology? You'll find it complete with the smart-aleck sensibility, eye popping design, and trademark visual puns that sold over 100,000 copies of their first two books. In this one, we see the technological world of yesterday that has become the glamorous and successful belle of the millenium ball. Get ready to revisit the laughable roots of today's wizardry and reminisce over doohickey's of decades past when Pong was a gnarly challenge, 0.7734 viewed upside down on a calculator cracked you up, and vacations was a time when you couldn't be contacted. Do you Remember Technology? is a must have for everyone from media junkies and web slaves to those who yearn for the good old days of typewriters and rotary phones.

Bor-ing.......2003-07-25
This is nothing but a bunch of photographs from the 70's thrown together. You can surf the web and find more interesting (and in-depth) information on everything in this book. What a waste.
Great look at the highest of techology: then, now and again........2000-07-29
I had many giggles, smirks, and even flinches looking at the pictures and quick blurbs and comparisons of the latest and greatest from then, now, and again. It's a great conversation piece to have in any techs or folks house/office. Nothing betters displays, compares, and organizes time like the "dancing baby" of today with the all mighty Radio Shack TRS-80 graphics, or the first of Star Trek to the new StarTAC. Do you remember? You might want to preserve it! Golly and Phat---it will always be neat to look at...

Customer Reviews:
I bought this book used for $1.50 and regret it.......2005-07-20
First, the content is not well-organized. TV programs and TV memories are generational, so it doesn't make sense to mix images from the 50s-90s together.
Second, the photographs have little impact. The book itself is rather small, and some pages contain clusters of small photos that compete for your attention.
Third, there is little interesting commentary. A good nostalgia book should describe how pop culture and society influenced each other.
This little book doesn't begin to do justice to the most powerful medium of our age.
A Blast From the Past........2003-02-17
I wasn't born in the 50s or 60s but I remembered about 3/4th's of the shows, commercials, jingles, names and other stuff found in this book. It was a nice little stroll down memory lane and a refreshing blast from the past. That's basically why this book was created: to give readers (and television viewers) a pleasant jaunt down memory lane in television land. You won't find much tv trivia here (though there are a few nuggets scattered throughout the pages), but what you will find are a lot of glossy photos, memorable phrases, and a wave of nostalgia. Great gift for any lover of television or student of popular culture.
A lighthearted, fun-to-look at book.......1999-08-26
This is a wonderful little book for anyone who likes TV, or even someone who doesn't. The cute, colorful design includes great pictures and a pop-art feel, and includes random photos and snippets of trivia from "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood," "Gilligan's Island," "All in the Family," and dozens and dozens more. It even includes pages devoted to classic commercials and news broadcasters, and classic news moments. A great, great book for families to look at together and remember.
If you were born in the 50's or early 60's it's a must have!.......1999-06-29
This book was the HIT of the latest 40th birthday party that I attended! What a delightful and refreshing walk down memory lane! You must purchase this book for all of your friends who were born in the 50's and early 60's. Do you remember PSSSSSST? This book did not forget a thing! What about green shag carpet? Thanks for the laughs and the memories!
This book really brings back memories.......1999-05-25
It is amazing. These guys really have their finger on the pulse of what I remember from my childhood. I think we must have been at home watching the same programs. I don't have the first book, but I surely recommend this one !!!
