This CD is a great resource for anyone who wants to break their habitual patterns of awareness and experience things at a deeper level. It is meant to be a guide that helps you to deal with automatic thinking and habitual ways of seeing the world. In short, it invites you to become more aware of your compensatory ego personality with all its predictability and surrender to a more present, spontaneous and alive way of connecting with your world. This is a book about being present in the moment and using the "stuff" of daily life as material for spiritual, emotional and psychological transformation.
Pema Chodron is an excellent speaker, has a great sense of humor and a very practical approach that could be applied by ANYONE of ANY faith. This is top notch material and well worth the cost. I have done a lot of soul searching through exploring various religions, meditations, and self help books. I can say that I've learned a lot but learning and being able to apply the concepts are two different things. This book gave me a few tools that finally gave me the ability to apply much of the knowledge I had gained to my life. I cannot stress enough how much I love this book. I am probably going to buy this book as well as "the power of now" for all of my closest family and friends.

To follow up The Prayer of Jabez with anything might be risky. Honestly I was expecting a spin-oof. I was more than pleastanly surprized at the engaging insight. Then to find out The Prayer of Jabez was pratically an afterthought - and in a manuscript for two years before it hit the streets - is a riot. Secrets of the Vine is not an end-all. No book is. But it is one jewel after another reminding me to dig deeper when searching God's word.

Ira Sacker's approach to treating eating disorders is indeed a bold new one. I have been a compulsive overeater for twenty-five years. I can't calculate the damage this has done to my life. I have been to four therapists, attended Overeaters Anonymous, and read scores of books on diet, exercise, overeating, and compulsive behavior. All of them have provided clues, but none of them taught me the comprehensive overview of why I behave the way I do and what is needed to recover that this book has done.
It has answered all of my questions, and several more that I didn't know to ask. It showed how a great deal of my strange behavior is not just a quirky personality, but the direct result of my disease. The book has shown me the way to real healing. I am very grateful to the author for making this information available.
Yes, the book focuses on anorexics and bulimics. Yes, sometimes the book seems to be addressing patients and other times therapists. Yes, some of the book does not seem to relate to me. But this is probably necessary given the books objectives and, as I said, it addresses every concern I had and more.
I am now looking for a therapist who is willing to read the book and work through its approach with me. This book is a life changer.

I highly recommend Dr. Ira Sacker's book to anyone suffering from an eating disorder, as well as to their families, friends, professionals, and anyone else interested in this area. God has used this book to help me understand so much about my own seventeen year struggle with anorexia, which began at the age of thirteen, and it has given me hope on my road to recovery. I have experienced all of the slips, lapses, relapses, and collapses, in which he explains in his writings. I now see a light at the end of this long dark tunnel. Dr. Sacker has been working in the field of eating disorders for more than 35 years; and his knowledge and unique approach known as PIRT-Personal Interactive Rational Therapy-is profound. This book is validating, informative, and deeply insightful. I have finally grasped that overwhelming anxiety along with other issues is at the core of eating disorders, rather than weight and food. Dr. Sacker does not just write about the underlying problems, but provides how one can overcome them by finding their passion in life. I can see Dr. Sacker's heart and soul in every page of this book. I am so grateful to him for his dedication, compassion, sensitivity, and incredible desire to see individuals regain their true selves and to be free from the "hell" that they are in. Regaining Your Self.......2007-06-08
This book purports that lack of identity, perfectionism and anxiety are intrinsic in eating disorders. It was helpful to think about the connection of these issues because identifying the problem makes it easier to address. At times I wasn't sure if the author was speaking to clinicians or lay people. His vast experience seems to be with clients who suffer from anorexia or bulimia. He does say that eating disorders are on a continuum which would include compulsive overeaters, but for those who deal with compulsive overeating you may find yourself wanting more examples of overeaters. There's not a lot of practical advice for addressing anxiety, perfectionism and identity issues. I wish the author had gone a little bit further in presenting concrete ways to work with the problem.

The first thing one must admit in reviewing one of Metzger's work is that next to no one is qualified to review one of Metzger's works. One of the most noted biblical scholars of a century, it's unlikely that any casual reader can take aim at him.
That said, the book is written for the casual reader, and in that sense is very accessible and unintimidating. There are even points at which, for the scholar or preacher, one might wish he would go into more detail concerning the first century context. The details of the eruption of Vesuvius and the threat of the Parthians are eye-opening, but Metzger gives them each only a passing notice. Nontheless, for an introduction to the Book of Revelation from the perspective of one who is not anticipating a literal, science-fiction fulfillment of the book in the future, this is a perfect read.
What is strongest about the book is that Metzger unpacks some of the most significant images of the text: the beast, the prostitute, the dragon and the lamb. He shows the first-century implications for the Roman Empire and lets us into the heart of one of Jesus' disciples, comforting a persecuted congregation. He interprets the symbols the way apocalyptic literature should be interpreted, as cosmic projections of present-day events. And all of this is done within the realm of Christian orthodoxy. In the end, it's a solid, reliable, insightful, brief book by a humble and talented scholar.

Metzger makes sense of this special book we call Revelation. From the beginning Metzger claims that this book has been mistreated by two extreme views: those who concentrate all of their study on this one book and those who are fearful to even attempt to read and interpret it. Many have carelessly ignored the literary genre in which it was written... that being apocalyptic literature.
This little book works much like a commentary. It is easy to read as it is primarily a guide to understanding the "Code" or symbols John uses in this type of literature. I highly recommend this book to those who are concerned with the historical-grammatical approach to studying and interpreting the Scriptures. It is a wonderful book to use in a small Bible study group. (You can also purchase a video and a leaders guide) I have used this in a small group. My class loved it!
It is no secret that Metzger's book is for the common man. Meaning: those who have not spent their entire lives at school, do not have knowledge of Greek, nor have had the opportunity to study theology in an educational institution. Metzger has the common man in mind. I have had the privilege to do these things... yet I find this book to be a great little resource when doing introductory study on the book of Revelation.
There are plenty of books on the market for those who want to further explore the first-century world of John to our modern day. This book is for those who want a historical approach to the book. It is plain and simple. And this is what Metzger wanted to accomplish. Get this book and learn of the great hope that Revelation presents to those who are called "the overcomers!"

I bought this book and read it in less than a week, if you have studied even a little bit about the Book of Revelation this is not the book for you. Everything I read I had already learned by just going to Sunday school. It is very basic, and I don't agree with some of the statements the author makes. This book didn't break any code at least for me.

Yet another bad "Anti-Robert's Rules" book.......2007-03-13
The authors of this work have done groups and organizations a grave disservice with this poor 'anti-Robert's Rules' book. It would appear from it that they really don't understand parliamentary procedure (not quite the same thing as Robert's Rules).
We can thank our early European ancestors for parliamentary procedure. They developed it over several hundred years in their town assemblies, and it was later used in the English Parliament (which is were we got the term 'parliamentary procedure'). When the English settled in America, they brought along parliamentary procedure, where it was used in many assemblies, and after independence, in our Congress, state assemblies, etc.
In Gen Henry Robert's time, there were several competing parliamentary authorities. He wrote a good, simple work that codified all this, and it was accepted by many because it was just better. What difference does it make that he was a General? To somehow blame him for the formality of parliamentary procedure because of that is childish.
Furthermore, parlimentary procedure is usable in ALL groups of ANY size to make decisions. In large groups, rules must be more formal, and sometimes addition procedures must be followed to get things done (ex: in large conventions). In small groups, about a dozen or less, you can actually be LESS formal, and despense with some of the normal rules you usually follow. This is set out in Robert's. I wonder if the authors are aware of this?
Consensus is nice, but should not be looked as a panacea. People should education themselves as to what parliamentary procedure REALLY is, and not list to biased authors such as these. Or even people like myself.

This book had valuable content. However, the book's organization was sometimes hard to follow. Also, it kept repeating the same points over and over. This made the book quite boreing.

I've always been perplexed by the fact that we run our meetings according to rules dreamed up by a military engineer more than 100 years ago. Maybe Roberts' arcane procedures about what can be discussed by whom and when worked once upon a time, but they don't make sense either in the modern business world or for making important policy decisions today.
I'm not sure that the consensus building approach spelled out in this book will necessarily work in every case, but it's clear, straightforward, and practical. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has gotten sick of going to meetings only to see the will of the majority frustrated by some shrewed parliamentarian manipulating the rules. Susskind offers a constructive alternative for people who just want to get the right thing done.
Great tool for developing effective communication.......2006-08-16
This book has great value whether you are a business owner, politician or public agency staffer, an environmentalist, a facilitator, mediator or any other interested party. It provides a simple, concise and easy-to-understand review of the consensus building process. From a communication perspective, consensus building lends itself towards helping any party in a negotiation develop a greater understanding and wider range of solutions that may be available on any given issue.
The authors frame the limitations of "traditional" Robert's Rules for running public meetings. These traditional methods tend to offer binary decisions (yes or no) which often limit discussion, stifle creativity, and almost always leave someone feeling "left out".
They offer a simple, easy-to-understand and concise method to "break the chains" of communication such that more creative alternatives to issues or problems may be offered and discussed. Through a more creative and contributed process, interested parties can craft decisions based upon informed consensus which lends itself towards more lasting agreements.
The book also offers an excellent treatise on facilitation or mediation techniques. It is useful no matter "what side of the table" you may be in any given issue. A list of Key Terms at the end of each chapter offer an excellent way to reinforce understanding.

I am about 3/4 the way through this audio set, and maybe that's why I still have some questions. First of all, I do (logically) understand the nature of duality, with duality being 'hell', and pure non-duality being 'heaven'.
And apparently, the key to pure non-duality is getting rid of unconscious guilt, through forgiveness of ourselves (& others). I love the forgiveness part, but I won't get in to that right now. I'll preface my question with some background: #1. According to the information in the book, our duality is a result of a "mad idea", which was over almost as soon as it happened (A bleep in time). Before the "mad idea", we were all one, and there was no duality.
#2. God did not create this illusion we call life, he did not create the earth, or anything associated with our physical, separate lives that are our pseudo reality. We created this illusion as a result of the "mad idea". The mad idea was that we thought we could do pretty good venturing out on our own.
Ok, here's where it doesn't make sense to me: If there was no duality before the mad idea, who had the mad idea? Did God have the mad idea, and if so, you could say he had a part in creating duality. If God did not have the mad idea, then we must have had it, and if so, there must have been duality before the mad idea.
As I said, I'm only 3/4 through these cd's, so I hope Gary explains a little more about this mad idea theory. Everything else I've heard so far makes perfect sense, but the conflict I'm having with this one question makes me question the validity of the rest of the info.
FOLLOW-UP EDIT: OK, I have finished this two cd set, Gary did discuss my question about the "mad idea" a little more. It seems that this is the most frequently asked question. His answer on the cd's still did not totally satisfy me, but apparently there is not an answer that we can totally understand. I have done a little more research on the internet in regards to this question, and everyone says the same thing, they give a small explanation, and follow up by saying that we will not hear an answer that satisfies us because there are no words to explain in a way we will understand. But....There is light at the end of the tunnel!!! I am about a quarter of the way through Gary's previous book, "The Disappearance of the Universe", and my question was discussed on pages 122-125! I was pleasantly surprised at just how well the issue was explained by Gary's ascended friends, Arten & Pursah. So if any of you are having the same trouble with the mad idea explanation of our creation 'illusion', just get the book I mentioned and pay special attention to pages 122-125! It's the best explanation I've heard so far! And by the way, for the cd's I'd change my rating from 4 stars to five if I could!

In addition to reviewing the neurochemical, environmental and genetic mechanisms of addiction, Dr. Ruden phenomenally explains the role that chronic, inescapable stress contributes to addictive behavior. I cannot recommend the book highly enough to healthcare professionals and the addicted interested in exploring the basis of the addictive process.
This Should Be Taught To Everyone.......2006-02-25
This Second Edition of The Craving Brain adds significantly to the First Edition. Looks to me like it adds two chapters, though the cover says it only added one. Anyway, the two chapter _titles_ added are "Biobalance to Mindfitness" and "Curing Sobriety." The only other changes seem to be minor edits moving away from 'medications as panacea' and towards attitude and lifestyle changes to accomplish the same results with fewer complications.
Here is my review of the First Edition, and it still stands:
Why do I stuff a whole bag of candy or quart of ice cream into my face? Why am I obsessed with Suzy down the street? Why do some people become alcoholics while others don't who drink just as much? Why am I so depressed? How can I learn to be satisfied with just the amount of food, sex and excitement that is good for me? This amazing book explains a neurobiological mechanism common to all these questions and more. It also provides helpful tools for the management of excessive cravings. This is done with such clarity and simplicity, and is potentially so valuable to humanity, that I believe it should be taught in school.
Anyone who has had issues with depression, obsessiveness, impulse control or addiction should be sure to get the Second Edition, which adds a lot of material on non-drug management of such problems.
Ruden's not the one who might benefit from lobotomy.......2006-02-05
Unfortunately, BobReadsalot just didn't get it. As Dr. Ruden says, this is not a self-help book. Ruden offers a fascinating theory of the physiological links that lead to craving and addiction. He provides the science very effectively in language any good reader can understand. Since all the needed research to support his theory has not been done, he offers an approach to intervening in the craving process that has been shown to work with alcoholics -- neurofeedback. In the future, when the research is done, Dr. Ruden's very-sound theory very likely will be one of the important stepping stones. One important contribution of this book for those seeking self-help is its insight that physiologic causes, rather than human weakness, trigger addiction. For those of us addicts who are tired of being blamed for our addiction, this book offers hope for a better future and takes the blame off our backs. Readers of Dr. Ruden's book should contact the National Institute of Drug Abuse and suggest that its reasearchers test Ruden's theory.
"The Craving Brain" needs a Lobotomy!.......2005-03-18
What a waste of money this book is! I've been absolutely satisfied with EVERY book I've ever ordered from Amazon, until this one. [...] I read it intently, page after page waiting for Dr. Ruden to get to the point. He never does. There is nothing here that could help one with an addiction. It's just a bunch of scientific babble. He has the most boring writing style. He drones on and on, but never gives the reader even one concrete suggestion on how to battle addictions. It's just a bunch of half-baked theories and mind wanderings by Dr. Ruden, to stroke his own ego. This book, and it's title, completely misrepresents itself! This title is so misleading, obviously Dr. Ruden jumped on the popular subject of "addictions" just to sell books. I really dislike being duped, and duped I was, as the description of this book has nothing to do with this book. My time is valuable, I really resent wasting it on reading this "psycho-babble goose chase"! When I finished reading it, I felt it was just an attempt to make a quick buck off of individuals suffering with addictions. [...] Don't be fooled by the fraudulent title, this book answers nothing! Please don't buy this [...].
A Biotechnical Guide To Why AA Works. Bold? Nah........2004-11-11
The Craving Brain's ""bold new approach'' to breaking free from addiction is neither bold nor knew. Attend AA, raise your seratonin level so that it biobalances with dopamine and you have a better chance of gaining and retaining sobriety. Great. For those of us who have been unsuccessful in AA and were pining our hopes on this new approach, it's disappointing. Oh, or we could try the eight paths of Bhudda. Geez. Sorry, Dr. Ruden. And to pad your book with more scientific techno speak near the end was also disappointing.

A lot of big-shot journalists didn't like this book, a systematic jeremiad about the current sad state of American political journalism. For instance, both the New York Times op-ed page and the New Yorker took pains to excoriate the book and its author--pretty good hints that Fallows is onto something. His point is that greed and intellectual sloth have fostered a political media elite that increasingly focuses on spin and ignores substance at the very time when solving the country's real problems requires all possible nuance.

Interesting New Take on Something We Already Know.......2006-11-24
The author has done a superb job of researching this treatise on a media out of control. Many we illustrative examples are given to prove the author's point and the writing style is good as well.
Between what is presented here and listening to the pundits who spout at the mouth along their own agendas in the radio, it is difficult for anybody to ever figure out what is fact and what is what someone wants things to be. Very thought provoking!

Fallows is very smart and an excellent writer. This book is very good but I do not believe it to be his best work. However, this is an important part of any survey or recent books on the large problems within the US media.
Liberal vs. Conservative? No Contest.......2004-10-19
I first met James Fallows online in the early '90s, and then in person several times. For a Rhodes Scholar and Harvard grad, he was surprisingly in touch with the realities I knew as a moderate Westerner living in the East. He was kind enough to give me a copy of Breaking the News, and I found it to be a great read. It offered new perspectives and excellent explanations on the sorry state of today's journalism, far beyond the traditional but simplistic explanation of "liberal bias." Jim's perspective truly transcends the partisan and raises issues above the divisive fray that almost tragically seems to divide our great country. Although critics may contend that Jim offers a liberal apologist's view that liberal bias is not the primary problem (or even much of a problem at all), even my friends who are staunch conservatives should find little to disagree with and much to learn in "Breaking the News."

The book Breaking The News:How the Media Undermine American Democracy by James Fallows is a well written book. It tells about issues that we should hear and it may change how the people view the media and how the media have control and why we shouldn't always believe what we hear on the news. The author tells about how the media controls how we see our goverment. It's not so much about how important issues should be resolved like health care, education, etc.,but more on what is controversial about it. It has also affects the political system. The media and journalist only show or write about issues that will get people's attention so that they could get the money that they want, not so much to find a soulution. They don't care so much about the issues, all they just want is the attention and the money. This affects how people view the polical system.
Superb book on our most important national issue!.......2004-01-14
Appalled at the biases, distortions and omissions in the media, which have been worsening since 9-11, I recently launched on a campaign of study in regard to learning about the deterioration of the media and the influence of corporate control - and what we can do to counter it. This is one of the best, most informative and most readable of the six books on the subject I've read. I can't emphasize enough how important it is, how much our corporate-run media influence political thinking, decisionmaking and voting and influence not only the outcome of elections but the agenda and actions of politicians - and how motivated we need to become in order to counter it, to become informed about political realities rather than propaganda and myth, and as a country, to become more of a democracy and less of a plutocracy. The biggest difficult we face is that the media itself is not likely to publicize its own corruption, and is actively blocking attempts of people concerned with these issues inform the public. I also highly recommend the books on media disinformation and reform by Robert McChesney, including his mini-books Corporate Media and the Threat to Democracy and Our Media, Not Theirs.
