5 out of 5 stars Kudos to Brandon Mull and Fablehaven.......2007-09-23

I think this series might be one of the literary worlds best kept secrets. I had never heard of it before Our school was lucky enough to schedule a visit with Brandon Mull. In preparation I bought the first Fablehaven book. I had no idea what I was missing. I was hooked after the first page and didn't want to put it down. I was ordering the 2nd book as soon as I was finished with the first. Now I am excitedly waiting for book 3.

5 out of 5 stars Mull does it again.......2007-09-13

Like so many of the other reviews Brandon Mull second book is even better than his 5 star first book. It's a shame we can't give more stars. This book is for more than just children's book, its a great read for any age. Truely imagitive and fun for the whole family, what a world to live in.

5 out of 5 stars Phenominal Book!.......2007-09-08

Great book. Don't know where he came from, but he's a wonderful writer that both youth and adults can enjoy. Within the book, the way he's written, you'll find small nuggets of good life guidelines as well as profound truths. Don't buy the book for those things, buy it for the excellent story and wonderful writing. You won't be dissappointed!

5 out of 5 stars A New Top Author.......2007-09-01

Brandon Mull uses his vast imagination to create a wonderful story for children. Parents and grandparents cannot put this book down until they have finished the story. As for the children, I have not seen them so excited about a book in a long time. It is pure delight when we sit around the table and talk about the characters and the story. I have purchased 4 copies for 4 grandchildren. May Brandon Mull write forever!

I absolutely loved both of the Fablehaven books. Brandon Mull is a very talented writer that draws you right into his stories. This is such a turnabout on your basic fairytale/mythological creatures that it is enjoyable for all age groups.

Book Description

Larry McMurtry's Terms of Endearment touched readers in a way no other story has in recent years. The earthy humor and the powerful emotional impact that set this novel apart rise to brilliant new heights with The Evening Star.

McMurtry takes us deep into the heart of Texas, and deep into the heart of one of the most memorable characters of our time, Aurora Greenway -- along with her family, friends, and lovers -- in a tale of affectionate wit, bittersweet tenderness, and the unexpected turns that life can take. This is Larry McMurtry at his very best: warm, compassionate, full of comic invention, an author so attuned to the feelings, needs, and desires of his characters that they possess a reality unique in American fiction.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Out of his many, one of his best........2003-09-08

No writer in the last half of the 20th century was better at character development than McMurtry. In "Terms" he introduced us to Aurora Greenway; here he he expands and burnishes her character while he folds in a supporting cast of almost equally fascinating lesser characters. This was one of those rare tomes I wished would never end. You don't have to like her, but if you finish this book unaffected by la Greenway, you'd best read it again. Aurora's successful plan to ensure her young Grandson would never forget her is one of the most moving sequences I have ever read. Two years after first reading this novel and I still well up just thinking about it.

4 out of 5 stars not perfect, but very good.......2003-08-05

In typical McMurtry style, there is a good deal of humor and whimsy in this novel. For the first 400 pages or so I felt it was a bit overdone, but once I saw where the novel was headed, it made perfect sense. About the ultimate destination of the novel: it packs quite an emotional punch. Rare indeed is the novel that can make me cry, but this one did it.

5 out of 5 stars As good as the first one!!.......1999-02-26

McMurtry's characters become so real to me that I can barely stand to let them go at the end of his books. I am so glad that I got to see what happened to the people from Terms of Endearment.

5 out of 5 stars a must-read for a who fell in love with Terms of Endearment.......1996-12-29

Larry McMurty gives us another masterpiece of humor and tears in the continued saga of Aurora Greenway

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring..........2007-05-18

I have read a couple of Catherine Coulter novels and this is one of my favorites! I like that she is daring with her writing. Sometimes it is a little far fetched, but I like that she writes about the "real world" while still creating a fictional and romantic story. Coulter doesn't always sugar coat everything and for me as a reader that's what keeps me intrigued and wanting to read more. That's what "Evening Star" was like. Sometimes it seemed a little too far fetched, but I couldn't put it down! I actually saw similarities of conflicts between the characters as a man and a woman that men and women even today seem to have. For some reason that was really interesting to me. I found myself wondering if a lot of the roles portrayed in this novel (between men and women) really existed in such a specific light during that time period. Overall, great romantic read, with superb characters! Looking forward to reading the other 3 novels of this series.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Erotic.......2004-08-11

This was a wonderful book that hooked me on to Catherine Coulter. I am not a romance novel reader, but one day at the library, I was looking for something different to pique me, and I saw Evening Star. I read the whole book in one night! ever since that day, I have read about 50 of her books. And that was only a couple of months ago. Her books are intriguing, seductive, whimsical, and addictive! I highly recommend her "Star" series, and in particular, "Evening Star".

2 out of 5 stars Waste of money and time.......2004-01-06

The heroine Giana is an idiot who willfully falls in love with a fortune hunter. By the end of the book she has been enlightened by a tacky summer trip to Italy with her Uncle Daniele to tour brothels, etc. In one instance in particular, her uncle makes Giana strip in front of himself and another whore. Giana gets home and immediately dumps fortune hunter boy because she all of a sudden recognizes his faults. Her mother technically okays the trip. It is hard to believe; however, that the whole fiasco could ever have happened because, regardless of her mother's business practices, a typically well bred english woman would never do this to her daughter. The story jumps around too much. The hero Alex practically rapes the heroine both the first time they meet (without success) and the second (with success and even though she is sick with the flu). He then forces her to marry him after she makes it clear to us and to him that she doesn't like him. He treats her badly and she still falls in love with him despite all she learned about him during her Italy trip. The only story in this book worth reading is the one about Giana's mother, Aurora. The author should have written this as her story from the beginning instead of wasting time on the other two sorry main characters. Giana's character really seems like two different people. Spoiled little idiot rich girls don't change that much or that quickly. This is a silly book. This author does not write books that I consider be good and this one is no exception. I won't be reading any more of her books.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing ride through the gamut of human emotions.......2003-08-25

Evening Star is one of those rare wonderful books that the reader feels forlorn after it is over. Our hero and heroine, Alex Saxton and Giana Van Cleve, are such well-drawn and fascinating human beings that they become the reader's riveting intimate friends as their very realistic yet exciting lives are played out in a delightfully sensual, heartbreakingly emotional and always entertaining plot with endless twists. The novel is so engrossing that I had to read its 420 pages in one sitting.

The willfully independent Giana is saved from the matrimonial clutches of a cunning fortune hunter when her wealthy shipbuilding mother Aurora sends her from London to Rome for a very enlightening summer education with her Uncle Daniele. What Aurora doesn't know is that Daniele not only gives her a glimpse of the seedier side of life but makes her hang out in a high class brothel posing as one of its girls, though no one is allowed to touch her.

Her ultimate test is her posing as one of the virgins to be sold at the astounding Roman Flower Auction. But nothing goes as planned, and Alex Saxton wins the bid for the intriguing and saucy Giana.

Four years after her incredible escape from him and his festering humiliation, he encounters her again in London-a formidable opponent in a major business negotiation. He becomes obsessed with revenge, and the desire to have her no matter what. What he gets is something he never bargained for.

For a breathtaking and thoroughly entertaining ride through the gamut of human emotions, don't miss Evening Star. Like many Catherine Coulter novels, it's a sure bet.

5 out of 5 stars I Think everyone need's to judge for themselves.......2002-07-27

Unlike our friend in Honolulu Hi, I have read everyone of Catherine Coulter's books. I can honestly say I have loved everyone of them. I have no idea what this person is talking about. Her stories are romantic yes, but they all hold a certain amount of excitment, intrigue, suspense and the out come is a very interesting book. I love the Bride series, as well as the Star and Song series. And most of all I would never judge a writer by one book. You might want to try her books that are more contemporary, like the Maze, the Edge, Etc.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Remembering Cecelia/Nguyen Minh Hang.......2006-12-29

Bright Moon and Evening Star is a magnificent record of a wonderful lady's development as a person, as a partner, and as the center of gravity of a growing family. It's also great testimony to the disruption that reverberated through the lives of young Vietnamese who moved south in the mid-1950's, with the goal of evading the horror that people presumed would emerge in the Communist north. Cecelia's letters captured the emotional and intellectual consequences of separating young yet traditional Vietnamese from their natal villages in the north where they had learned how to be Vietnamese, and tossing them into the stew that was Saigon, or that Saigon was becoming. The dialogue of the letters, and the monologue of the diary entries, show the internal drama that Vietnamese living in between several cultures -- cultures that revolved around strands of Patriotic, Catholic, Westernizing, nationalist ways of life, for example -- dealt with even as Saigon hurtled toward the crises of instability, war, government failure, leadership lapses that waited for that society in the 1960s and beyond. These letters from an earlier part of her life reminded me that throughout the 1980s and 1990s Cecelia taught me more about being Vietnamese than anything I had ever read, any discussion I had ever had with senior government officials in Hanoi over the past 20 years, any document I had ever labored over with the goal of figuring out Vietnam and the Vietnamese.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Students of Vietnamese Culture.......2006-12-27

Perhaps more than most books on the interaction between traditional Vietnamese culture and that of the West, Nguyen Minh Hang captures the essence of Vietnamese tradition as she reveals her growing attraction to an American man. Ms. Hang's writings--in diary form--began in the late 1950s when she was just 19. At the outset, she appears to be an exceptionally perceptive observer of Western customs, literature, language, and mindset nothwithstanding her not yet having left the embrace of a very close-knit Vietnamese family. The reader is treated to the description of a budding romance--all conducted by mail--which takes place prior to any American public awareness of Vietnam. Specialists and amateurs in Asian culture will be fascinated by Ms. Hang's stern guidance to the young Airman (who ultimately became her husband) on written expressions of familiarity and what these mean in the traditional Vietnamese context. This is a love story with some good descriptions of the backdrop of war, revolution, dislocation, and finally the personal triumphs that came with Ms. Hang's determination to immerse herself in more than one foreign culture.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best fantasy books I've ever read!.......2007-09-20

I am totally awed by Chris Walley's talent! I love Tolken, and it is wonderful to see his style reflected by Walley. The smoothness, clarity, and detail are fantastic and make the story come alive. His characters are believable, which is a great accomplishment in a fantasy setting where sometimes the strangeness of the setting builds a wall between the reader and the characters. Some people complain about this book starting out slow. That is true, but necessary. The reader gets a good, solid introduction to the world and characters which causes the rest of the book to flow smoothly. Science fiction fans and anyone who calls themself a writer will enjoy studying the excellent style of this suspenseful portrayal of the battle between good and evil.

3 out of 5 stars over-rated.......2007-02-08

I honestly don't see the draw of this book. I got it based on all the 5-star reviews. First of all, it took me forever to get to any kind of action! I was so bored, I read three other books in the mean time. It is an interesting concept, but the language is bumpy and weird, the descriptions overbearing, the concepts repeated page after page, and the action is non-existent until the last 4 or 5 chapters. Disappointing. I'm surprised I got this far. If it had been a library book, I would have returned it by now.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-03-15

This book is an addictive opener to an excellent story.
Don't be misled by the "Teen Fiction" label as I am a 40+ attorney and thought it was great. The plot is good, the character development is done well and, of course, the basis for the story is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible New Voyage.......2006-01-02

This was one heck of a good book! Walley uses such a brand new, fresh approach in his sci-fi that it is a very original masterpiece. Man, if you are sick of the same old boring sci-fi cliches, I can tell ya, this book is one incredibly new voyage.
Nonstop action with a very unique storyline and plot, sparkling dialogue and well developed characters make for a great tale. I hafta admit that it is slow in the beginning, but once you are through the beginning, the plot soars! A NEW EXPERIENCE.

5 out of 5 stars More Authors need to take notes from Chris Walley!.......2005-08-13

Chris Walley has brilliantly crafted a fully realized futuristic sci-fi / fantasy epic for young people and adults. The well thought out characters, compelling situations, and sweeping landscapes will keep the reader immersed, excited, and thoughtfully challenged. Regardless of individual background, an inspiring story of good and evil and the difficult decisions, sacrifices, and mistakes made in times of trouble will be richly revealed with each passing page. With the battle for hearts and minds in our own culture, both on an internal and external level, Mr. Walley's imagined world resonates provokingly with our own changing world. There is much to keep coming back to in "The Lamb Among the Stars" series, and readers will doubtless be reflective after finishing each book, as well as excited to find out what happens next! In a genre where there just doesn't seem enough of this type of literature, more from the imagination of this fresh, new author is anxiously awaited!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ecounter the Child-like, Christ-loving life of Madeleine...........2003-11-30

This is my sixth Madeleine L'Engle nonfiction book I've read and it was definately one of the better of the six (even though all of them were exceptional).

"Bright Evening Star" explores childhood and the wonders and mysteries that have haunted all of our imaginations and filled our hearts for as long as we remember. In this, Madeleine transforms faith into being a radical, Child-like journey, rather than a stoic, heady and intellectual debate. This was much needed in my heart and life and took me back to a day where my sister and I would take adventures on our bike in our southern neighborhood, pretending to be going on a trip across the country. It was a wonderful memory that needed to be rekindled and remembered. Thank you so much Madeleine.

(Also, Madeleine's books have a way of meeting you right where you are---this book came perfectly into my life and right along with what God has been laying on my heart lately---honestly, every book can do this if the writer is close enough to God, and since she is, she was able to be the vessel for my own relationship and allowed me to stand in awe of Jesus, the risen Christ, once and again).

5 out of 5 stars Prolific writing style, spiritually uplifting!.......2003-04-21

This book is filled with unique insights into the Incarnation. A wonderful, hard-to-put-down book!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written.......2001-08-12

L'Engle shows us once again how diverse a writer she is. This book is not bound by time or space, but can take us into worlds yet to be discovered. L'Engle has ways to make even the strangest possibilities come to life, and any person, L'Engle fan or not, will be deeply engrossed in this amazing book

        Book Description

Penned by bestselling author Sigmund Brouwer, the two books in the LEGENDS OF LARAMIE series ("Silver Moon" being the other) provide authentic western action with gritty characters and harsh landscapes.

EVENING STAR Sam Keaton, a cowpuncher, rides into Laramie on payday to look for a good time. A few short hours later, however, trouble forces him back into the saddle and into a desperate flight from a vicious posse. Alone on the trail and haunted by the aftermath of the gunfight he hadn't provoked, Keaton meets an enigmatic Indian who helps him summon all his resources to survive. His only hope seems to be in unraveling a puzzling tribal legend, but in doing so, Keaton's brought closer to the understanding that there's more to a man's life than what he can see or touch.

        4 out of 5 stars excellent.......2005-05-22

Sigmund Brouwer is a favourite author of mine so I am pleased to recommend both this book and the entire series of Legends of Laramie, of which I own all four. Sam Keaton is a simple man at heart who finds himself tangled up in complicated dilemmas which require all his savvy and skill to be free of. Haunted by his past, Keaton must first deal with the troubles of the present which threaten to bring him to his knees. I appreciate Brouwers knack of weaving a three-fold mystery into one story in any genre, and it seems to work very well in this western setting

        4 out of 5 stars A Good Beginning.......2001-03-14

With this book, Sigmund Brouwer starts the Legend of Laramie series. As many of his books do, it starts out seemly simple, but soon gets very complicated. Samuel Keaton, our hero, accidentally gets involved in a shoot-out, saving an Indian's life. While on the run, he realizes that he has gotten involved in a case involving several crimes from years before, including his own past. With Indians and the law on his tail, can he evade all his pursuers long enough to get the answers and clear his name?

Having read others in this series first, I greatly enjoyed getting to meet the characters for the first time. The other books hint at the events contained in this book, so it was nice to finally get the complete picture. While his past being resolved by the modern plot may be convenient, it also makes for a great story. As always, Sigmund Brouwer weaves a good story with well-defined characters. It's great to see Bethany House reprint this book, formerly entitled Morning Star.

        4 out of 5 stars A Christ ian Western?.......2000-12-01

For Western lovers uncertain about the brand Christan Western, "come along pardner." For Christian readers, fearful that Westerns center around violent, amoral characters, "Be not afraid."

On one level, Brouwer offers us a fairly standard tale of a drifting cowboy with a clouded past who almost inadvertently stumbles upon a lawman brutally assaulting a hapless Indian. When he intervenes, and the lawman is killed, the cowboy's life depends on unraveling a mystery including the Indian, a twenty-year-old US Army gold theft, and the corrupt sheriff who had murdered the cowboy's brother. A good story, well told, enjoyable by any fan of Westerns.

On another level, the cowboy finds himself challenged to wonder at the meaning of the universe. As a man of action, he spends little time in reflection, but over the course of the novel the challenges he face lead him to see that there is a purpose beyond himself, a non-sectarian but solid Christian message that leaves the cowboy transformed by novel's end.

        5 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2000-08-06

I recently was encouraged by a close friend to read this book and I am so glad I did. I've read very few westerns or books about cowboys but this book got me roped into it nearly immediately. Samuel Keaton represents all people who need a second chance at life and love. The characters were very fresh and original. Brouwer is a talented writer who knows how to send a point across without over used cliches.
