Book Description
Translated into more than 80 languages, Where There is No Doctor is perhaps the most widely-used health care manual in the world. The book provides vital information on how to diagnose and treat common medical problems and diseases, giving special emphasis to prevention. Recommended by the Red Cross, this guide is ideal for people in rural communities that don't have medical centers or hospitals nearby. It will show you how to identify illnesses that are frequently misdiagnosed, measure and administer medicine, deliver a baby and much more. It covers children's and seniors' health and illnesses, as well as advice for pregnant women and midwives. You'll learn how to treat ailments from diarrhea to tubercolsis, use home remedies and identify those illnesses that require professional medical care. Includes hundreds of illustrations and a glossary.
Customer Reviews:
A must have for medical interpreters!.......2003-07-14
This is a fantastic reference for people interested in working as a medical interpreter. The information presented is practical, well-organized, and addresses the impact of culture on health care. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a valuable self-training manual.
It is absolutley the most valuable book to have!.......1999-07-05
I loved reading this book from a friend that I was compelled to special order it on the same day I read it! I never buy books but this book changed my life. I spread the news about it and now all of my friends have bought the book too. I'll be going to Mexico and will be taking extra copies of Donde No Hay Doctor with me. I plan to distribute them to rural and literate families. I hope this book will be announced more especially within the Hispanic Communties. I can only wish this book is read at least once and that people will see how invaluable it is.
I won't leave home without it!.......1998-12-30
We just returned from a Hurricane Mitch Medical Relief Team in Honduras. This book was invaluable to the entire team. Comprehensive enough to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of ailments not often encountered in the US, and basic enough to share the info with the patients to aid with education. A must for anyone practicing medicine in Spanish speaking developing countries. We live near the Mexico border and I've ordered one to help me out here!
Useful & practical.......1998-02-07
I came across this book in Mexico in 1986. The book is clearly written and comprhensive. It should be a valuable resource for persons in rural Latin American (spanish speaking) populations where there is no health professional. We have a 13 year old spanish speaking foster daughter through Healing the Children. She has limited reading skills (classified EMH) and is facinated with the learning to be found in Donde No Hay Doctor. The simple but comprehensive drawings spur her on to struggle (because of her limited ability) through the reading (well written). I wanted a copy to send back with her to her rural village in the Dominican Republic.
Book Description
A fascinating and harrowing account of the men and women who struggle to improve the lives of people in desperate need.
Doctors Without Borders (also known as Médecins Sans Frontières, or MSF) is arguably the best known humanitarian organization in the world. These professional men and women deliver emergency aid to victims of armed conflict, epidemics and natural disasters as well as to many others who lack reliable health care. Each year, more than 2,500 volunteer doctors, nurses and other professionals join locally hired staff to provide medical aid and health care in more than 80 countries.
At the forefront of this organization and its work are the volunteer doctors and other health professionals who risk their lives to perform surgery, establish or rehabilitate hospitals and clinics, run nutrition and sanitation programs, and train local medical personnel. This book follows these men and women on location as they risk their own health, well-being and lives to treat patients in desperate need.
These engaging true stories with dramatic color photographs examine the lives of individual volunteer medical professionals from around the world who:
- Perform emergency surgery in the war-torn regions of Africa and Asia
- Treat the homeless in the streets of Europe
- Understand cultural customs and societal differences that affect health care
- Witness and report genocidal atrocities.
This new paperback edition is updated to include events that occurred following publication of the hardcover.
Hope in Hell chronicles the raucous founding of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the organization. If there is a horrific event, MSF will be there. This book tells why and how.
Customer Reviews:
I couldn't put this book down.......2007-09-06
This is an AMAZING book. It takes alot for a book to really captivate me, and Hope in Hell did so about a page into it. I recomend this book to everyone, whether your an avid reader into good stories, or wether your like myself and considering a career with the MSF.
The book makes sure to cover all jobs that you could fill with the organization, with the execption of working for one of their western offices. It covers job descroptions for water sanitation workers, Logistians (excuse my spelling), Nurses, Doctors, and Surgeons. I feel it is great for people considering work with the MSF because it gives you the full story through acounts from actual volunteers, not only does it tell you the nature of the feild work, but also the effect it has on people pschologically when they return home, and how they react once back in their "homes" (and how they realize their only home is with the MSF).
The book also spends time discussing the structural aspect of the organization as well as politics and Drug research.
I bought the book and couldn't put it down, a great read.
MSF brings hope tot he most unimagineable Hell.......2006-01-10
I am a grade 10 student who recently used this book for an english project. I found this book to be highly insightful of MSF thoughts, goals and ideas. The book painted a bold picture that sends a impactful image of our world. It sheds lights on many projects MSF is currently working on and also makes you think of these people who give their lives for strangers in order to provide life.
Technically, the book follows an understandable format and remains interesting throughout while covering a lot of information. Many perspectives are covered which gives the book added depth.
Very Good Book.......2005-08-02
This book really helped putting the finishing touches on my sister's research projects about doctors without borders, especially since many books don't offer as many insights and pictures as this one.
impersonal and repetitive.......2005-02-05
I would say that Hope in Hell is a good read and an interesting book but I have to say that the style is very impersonal, very repetitive, very introductory and does not do justice to the many MSF volunteers who were interviewed for the book.
It is impersonal because there is little more than a name and perhaps the country of origin given as the stories of volunteers are told. I read this book right after reading the Fast Food Nation in which the writer describes his interview subjects in a manner that enables the reader to have a mental picutre and develop a deep relationship with them.
Hope in Hell reads as an introductory piece of writting. Half way through the book I still thought I was reading the introductory chapter.
The sotries in this book were tragic and could've and should've been written in a heart wrenching style but the writer failed to write it so.
I would recommend it as a book to skim through but not a book worth purchasing and adding to your collection.

The best survival book you will ever buy.!.......2007-01-10
This book is good information for advanced retreaters who know there math or are willing to do there home work i have so you can to.This book is worth any amount of money for those who dont believe in conventional doctoring because of religious or personal reasons this is the book for you it can make the diffrence between life and death.Buy it and keep it at the front of youre Medical library.Another fine book bye Ragner Benson
Just Downright Dangerous.......2006-11-04
A listing of the errors and inaccuracies in this book would fill a small paperback in itself. If a person hasn't been trained in the basics of emergency medical science, some of the procedures advocated in this book could prove lethal to a patient if performed by an amateur. The book can best be characterized this way: even the author's method for forging prescriptions is obsolete.
If you're looking for a felony conviction, this is your book. If you're interested in sound do-it-yourself emergency healthcare procedures, try one of the books recommended by the other medical professionals who reviewed this one.
Just do your EMT.......2006-03-10
Full of less than half information, just do your EMT Basic license at a local community college. Its a real qualification and you know that you met a standard. After all, people are not legos and in an emergency you want skills you can depend on...because thats exactly what you'll be doing.
Full of half-truths and lies.......1999-04-14
I don't recommend this book. As with most books by survial author "Ragnar Benson" it is full of innaccuracies and half truths. There is some basic information on setting bones, stitching wounds, and other simple topics, but it is not very well addressed -- It's almost as if the author has no idea what he's talking about and is simply repeating urban knowledge thirdhand. As far as his information of how to aquire the various supplies, there are far better, easier, and more legal ways than he describes here. The misinformation presented here is likely to get you in trouble. "DITCH MEDICINE" is a far better book.
Long on drug acquisition, short as a medical material.......1998-12-28
The author spends a lot of time telling you how to obtain drugs normally available only through doctors (and ranting about government control) while not spending a lot of time on the medical aspects that the title leads you to believe.
I suppose that his suggestions about forging prescriptions shouldn't be surprising when his other books tell readers how to gunrun for profit, acquire new id, build claymore mines, etc.
Book Description

Baby E.R,: The Heroic Doctors and Nurses Who Perform Medicine's Tiniest Miracles.......2007-01-17
I gave this to my son who is the father of a preemie. He said it was so good that he was going to loan it to me to read also. My son is a Ph.D. candidate and has a lot of reading to do, so any additional book has to be really good.
Simply Excellent.......2004-02-05
This is a wonderful book. The author not only delves into the lives of twelve families affected, but also about the history of neonatology itself. You find yourself pulling for each of these tiny infants as well as their caretakers.
Inspiration!.......2003-11-11
This book was the most impressive book I have ever read! It inspired me to go into Neonatology! I adore this book and recommend it to any one interested in medicine!
wonderful book, even for those without the nicu experience.......2002-11-03
this book is great! it follows the real life happenings of a nicu in california. it follows the cases of several families, through their ups adn downs, and everything in between. there are babies that recover fine, some that recover with problems, adn some do die. it also talks about things from the doctors and nurses perspectives, and gives some history of neonatology. a great book for preemie parents, non preemie parents (i am not, and just loved this book), doctors, nurses, etc. very good read.
I agree with Oprah -- a great read.......2002-07-08
I found this book after seeing it mentioned on Oprah. Wow. What an amazingly touching and fascinating look at the brave new world of having babies. She just has a way of finding the books that are full of heart.
Book Description
Written by a knowledgeable seagoing physician, this book addresses the medical layman. It is thoroughly illustrated and presented in a format that is easy to follow, even in an emergency. Covering a wide range of medical problems that may be encountered at sea, Dr. Beilan explains how to prepare medical histories of the crew before leaving on a voyage, set up a medical kit according to the type of voyage to be made, determine priorities in the event of a problem, make a tentative diagnosis and proceed with treatment, and provide aftercare for the patient until medical authorities can be reached. Next to having a physician in the crew, the best things a prudent skipper can have on board are a well-planned medical kit and this book. Don't leave port without it.

Book Description
We are all patients at some time. Is the medical industry giving us the best treatment possible, at the best price? We all know that it isn't. My book, The Secrets of Medical Decision Making: How to avoid becoming a victim of the Health Care Machine, shows what goes on behind the scenes of the current medical care and how it impacts the patient. I describe actual cases from my clinical practice showing the most common paths that lead to increased patient suffering. I then offer possible solutions.
My book covers all the health care settings a reader may encounter: outpatient (the most common type of health care setting encountered by patients), the inpatient (hospital), preventive (patients who are not sick but seek preventive services), and end-of-life care setting. The latter may be especially pertinent in the view of the recent public tragedy of the Terri Schiavo case.
Personal stories of the patients that I encountered make this reading easy to relate to. The experiences of patients are used as starting points to show how doctor's decisions are affected by a variety of non-medical considerations.
I introduce a concept of a Medical Boxforces that have a stronger hold on most physicians than the heavy chains of prison shackles. Here are, what I call, the four corners of the Medical Box:
Fear of litigation.
Financial and time pressure.
Guidelines of Health Care authorities.
The current Medical Modeldisease oriented thinking.
The text illustrates how each of these is played out in everyday patient care. A number of practical recommendations are offered. The most important theme, overarching the entire book, is empowering prospective patients to use their own common sense and trust their own judgment in making medical decisions about their medical care.
A foreword to the book is written by Colin P. Kopes-Kerr, MD, JD, MPH, who is a Vice Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine, and Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program, at University Hospital and SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine, Stony Brook, NY.

"Primum Non Nocere".......2006-07-30
House, E.R. and Grays Anatomy are not realistic portrayals of the American medical system. According to Dr. Resnik physicians are so afraid of litigation that any deviation from pre-set protocols to treat the patient as an individual and not the so-called disease is unusual. Doctors like Greg House, John Carter would be immediately dismissed and find it impossible to acquire mal-practice insurance. It is chilling to think that the media inspired idea of the omnipotent good-hearted doctor like Marcus Welby or reassuring throaty voiced Dr. Kelly Bracket from Emergency is so false.
When sickness strikes us or a loved one, we expect that in this technological twenty-first century age of marvels that just like our cars or appliances that have `crapped the bed':
A. We can be fixed with some kind of medication or therapy.
Or
B. Our parts can be removed and replaced and we can continuer our lives already in progress and unabated.
Doctor Reznik has pried our heads from the sand, removed our rose-colored glasses and has cut off our source of pap from the glass teat. He has taught us to advocate for ourselves and ask questions, even while the insurance and pharmaceutical behemoths perpetuate the myth that an American homeostasis of mental and physical health is only one more pill, test or procedure away.
Review: The Secrets of Medical Decision Making.......2006-06-27
In this work, Dr. Reznik alerts the consumer to the reality of today's medicine and its practices. He presents a medical industry that places the individual physician in a `box' that influences his decision-making beyond what is always best for the patient. Dr. Reznik position is that the modern physician is unduly influenced by the fear of litigation, the need to follow untested medical guidelines, the pressure of the pharmacology industry and the demands of the insurance companies. He presents a compelling case for his beliefs. His thesis is presented in short chapters of two or three pages that use interesting case studies to inform the reader about their need to ask questions and take charge of their own medical needs.
His writing style is easy to digest and compelling. This work is an effortless read and easy for the layperson to understand. My one complaint is in the displayed copies of medical records, notes and tests results as the printing is blurred and difficult to see.
Dr. Reznik's concern that many patients allow the medical industry to take over their individual decision-making is unfortunately very accurate - too many patients get caught up in endless consultations and unnecessary tests. My one very strong objection is to Dr. Reznik's dismissal of the need for cancer screening. As a cancer survivor myself, I believe the truth gives the patient the power of control. To tell the public that cancer screening, especially mammography, is not necessary is extremely dangerous and endangers lives unnecessarily.
Important, Enlightening, Instructive, an Eye Opener.......2006-05-26
Oleg I. Reznik M.D. has coined the term "Medical Box" to illustrate the boxed-in thinking imposed on physicians. He calls the four corners of the box: fear of litigation, financial and time pressure, guidelines of Health Care authorities, and the current Medical Model, disease oriented thinking.
Dr. Reznik uses vignettes from actual medical records, his own experience, and from the experiences of his colleagues to further illustrate the implications of the obstacles placed on the physician and the medical profession as a whole.
Each vignette reflects the perspective of the physician, the patient and family, sometimes the societal, and finally the spiritual/philosophical view as it relates to treatment, suffering, guilt, and in the final preparation of facing death.
Reznik supports the belief that the patient should assume more responsibility in learning the options available to him, the side effects that may result, and the expected results of taking action. He suggests asking these three questions. What is the doctor trying to find out from the testing? How will this additional information affect medical management and prognosis? What does the testing entail? What are the risks of test or procedure?
"Secrets of Medical Decision Making" freely uses detailed descriptions of medical treatments, tests, and procedures written in a layman's language. Rezik has produced an outstanding work. This is a guide to help patients avoid becoming victims of the health care machine. It is truly an eye opener. Dr. Rezik is well qualified to write this book. He is a board certified family physician. This study is an important addition to studies on patient advocacy. Rezik has done thorough research and has provided comprehensive reference documentation. Physicians, medical practitioners, and patients will all benefit from reading this book. It is both, enlightening, and instructive. This is a book to be read and read again.
Informative. Always ask "why?".......2006-03-01
Reviewed by Kelli Glesige for Reader Views (2/06)
If you want to know why doctors make some of the recommendations they do, then here is the book for you. Speaking as both a physician and a patient, Reznik helps us to understand what motivates our physicians and why they often say the things they do. "The Secrets of Medical Decision Making" is a book we can all benefit from reading because we all need health care at some time, or we are put in the situation of needing to make medical decisions for another. Oleg I. Reznik, M.D. has a goal of making us conscious and informed in the medical decisions we must make; by doing so we could have a much better health care system than we currently have.
Reznik calls our current health care system The Health Care Machine because it has become so mechanical. So many demands must be met that it is almost like an assembly line. As patients, we need to have freedom to make our choices and to question the system. The physicians and other health care workers are placed in a position called The Medical Box within The Health Care Machine because they are pressured to have only a standard, mechanical response to any given set of problems. As patients, we need to be aware of this system and the way it works so we can be aware of the limitations. Doctors are not omnipotent, which so many of us want to believe, and they should be relieved of such a burden, but so often, they are forced to stay "in the box" to protect themselves.
To ease our understanding of the material Reznik presents, he addresses four different viewpoints with each topic. Patient/Family Perspective deals with issues that would be most relevant to prospective patients and their families. Physician's Perspective gives the physicians viewpoint on the discussed topic. Societal Perspective gives the ramifications on the society as a whole. Spiritual/Philosophical Perspective talks about the spiritual and philosophical aspects of medical care because these cannot be taken from any attempt at trying to understand a human being. Dr. Reznik presents true stories of actual clinical studies in his book to help explain the "rules of the game" in this game of health care. He wants us to understand what drives the doctor so that we can learn to be more self-reliant.
I found the information on several different medical tests to be quite informative. We are given some questions to think about before agreeing to a test and the reasons why doctors prescribe the tests to begin with. Reznik speaks at length about prostate screening and the treatment of prostate cancer, mammograms, and how the statistics on cancer survival have progressed. All the information he presents is quite interesting and worth one's time to read in order to be a more informed individual.
Everyone may not find all the information presented by Reznik to be relevant, but we can all benefit from the ideas presented. I personally will feel less intimidated the next time I ask, "Why?" when the doctor recommends something I am not sure about. Take charge of your health and do what is best for YOU. Reading this book is well worth anyone's time who wants to be an informed patient.

Highly Informative!.......2006-01-14
Dr Reznik has written a highly informative book that Americans need to read for the knowledge that most of us don't have. In today's constantly changing medical world, we need all the help that we can get. Many thanks to Dr Reznik for sharing with us.

Book Description
This is a book written across the grain of contemporary ethics, where the principle of autonomy has triumphed. It is an attempt to see the law of medicine, the principles of bioethics, and the encounter between doctor and patient from the patient's point of view. While Schneider agrees that many patients now want to make their own medical decisions, and virtually all want to be treated with dignity and solicitude, he argues that most do not want to assume the full burden of decision-making that some bioethicists and lawyers have thrust upon them. What patients want, according to Schneider, is more ambiguous, complicated, and ambivalent than being "empowered." In this book he tries to chart that ambiguity, to take the autonomy paradigm past current pieties into the uncertain realities of modern medicine.

Very lightweight book on the ER.......2003-11-06
I was disappointed in this book. As a potential career changer into medicine, I had hoped to get some insights into Doctors lives and the ER. You won't get any of that here.
Expect some self-absorbed essays from Doctors that highlight their fears, anxieties, disappointments and successes in the ER. If you want to learn anything about medicine look elsewhere.
Good, but title misleads readers.......1999-09-14
Good, readable, well-written book, but a bit disappointing given the title. Yes, these are ER doctors and they tell compelling, graphic, somber and touching tales. However, given the TV show ER, and cable productions involving trauma and emergency rooms, this book pales in comparison. On the positive side, we see these medical men and women as real, vulnerable humans with both strong and weak moments. If faced with buying the book, or going to the library and borrowing it, do the latter. Save your money for one of the other books on the subject.
Not the best book of ER stories, but it's good.......1999-03-20
Most of the stories in this book are good; a few are great and a few are boring. While it is not as compelling as "Believe It or Not! True Emergency Room Stories" or "Emergency: True Stories from the Nation's ERs", it is definitely a book that you won't regret buying.
Quick Fascinating Glimpses of Emergency Room Docs.......1999-02-23
Some twenty doctors offer stories of their times in their life when they served in the ER. Some quite touching; others brutal -- not just in the cases which presented themselves but also in the behavior of some of the doctors. One conclusion that I can't help to realize is that the "old boy's way" of completing ridiculous on-call hours is inhumane and should be changed and changed quickly. The impairment -- emotional and physical -- that many of these doctors suffered as a result of the length of their on-call hours caused some of them to treat patients abusively, perhaps even criminal. One doctor speaks of an uncooperative patient who needs stitches. Since he's tired and has no patience left, the doctor solved the contentious patient problem by threatening him and sewing his ears to the rails of the ER treatment bed while he proceeded to stitch the man's head.Interesting reading; provides a broad range of points of view -- professional -- speaking of their experience, challenges and downright blunders. Each story is very short and this is a great book to keep by the bedside to complete a bit at a time.Worth a look!
Wow! Gut-wrenching tales by physicians with a flair for writing........1996-09-23
True dramas from the E.R., some funny, some sad, some horrifying.
And these docs can write. Contributors include marquee names such as Ethan Canin, Sam Shem, Michael Palmer, Perri Klass, & Richard Selzer. Other, "less well known" contributors have been recognized by the Pushcart Prize, Pulitzer Prize, & Best American Short Stories Anthology. As a fan of the television show ER, my interest in the book was piqued by the flattering review in Kirkus Reviews. Interestingly, the editor is himself an emergency room resident training in a Chicago trauma center (just like the actors in the popular television show). If you enjoy the TV show, you'll love this collection.
