Book Description
Long before their supporting role in Sex and the City, Manolo Blahnik's shoes were legendaryexquisitely detailed, unabashedly luxurious, and impossibly sexy. The epitome of sophistication and taste, they have graced the feet of royalty, supermodels, and movie stars. In these breathtaking pictures by Blahnik's longtime friend, photographer Eric Boman, the shoes take center stage in a dazzling array of intriguing and often lighthearted scenes and settings. A white leather stiletto plays an incriminating role in a suggested crime worthy of Hitchcock. A pale green mule nestles among ferns in homage to Blahnik's recurring botanical themes. The straps of a sandal echo the strands of spaghetti in which it lays entwined. Boman's unerring eye and oddly keen understanding of Blahnik's creations make for spellbinding pictures, full of wit, playfulness, and sole. Elegant allusions to Blahnik's eclectic influences aboundfrom the cinema to history, from the natural world to art and literature. As covetable as a pair of Manolos, this is a book of consummate creativity, addictive power, and unrivaled individuality: a cult object on a cult designer.

Blahnik by Boman.......2006-07-18
I just happened to be in Selfridges/London last year, coinciding with Eric Boman and Manolo Blahnik's book launch. There were queues and queues of eager fans lining up to get their newly purchased books autographed by the fashionable duo. It was all very civilised, even though security guards were holding back the frenzied mob, while Boman and Blahnik relentlessly signed with tireless good humour and charm.
Blahnik has been the ultimate cobbler to the stars since the Seventies, and Boman is a veteran, top photographer who's been photographing beautiful women for years (his most recent book, "Dames" show-cases his portrait-photogaphy). It's fortunate for Manolo that Eric came up with the novel idea of photographing his old friend's shoes. It was also conducive for the book that he supplied the witty 'photographic conversation,' for although Manolo's shoes are the most exquisite in the world, a book would have been pretty one dimensional with pedestrian sole snap-shots of his pumps without Eric's creative input.
Boman has not only managed to produce imaginative photographs of the beautiful shoes, but has elevated Manolo's footwear to museum status. Thanks to his original and highly imaginative photographic compositions, the elegant pumps have been transformed into classical portraits.
Boman and Blahnik's old friend Paloma Picasso has supplied the foreword, helping make this beautifully produced book a must have gift, especially for people with tasteful shoe fetishes and aficionados of superior glossy art books, the kind which are too exquisite to grace coffee tables.
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!.......2006-02-24
The genius design combined with amazing photography and styling make for a journey of beauty.A must have for the collector of fashion and photgraphy books.
Good creation to show you Manolo Blahnik shoe art........2006-01-17
I am a photographer and also a high heels collector. There is a project in my mind since one year ago, I want to creat a book to present the art of high heel design, just like this book. I have many ideals. However when I saw this book, I think I need new ideals, or my friend will think that my work is just a copy.
I will rate 4 to 4.5 stars to this book.
shoes...no odor.......2005-12-24
like shoes? photos of shoes? buy this book!
Wacky, Wonderful, Weird World!.......2005-12-23
I have a huge collection of fashion books - both artistic and historical. A friend just gave this to me for our holiday gift-exchange at work, and I am absolutely overwhelmed!
The images are completely striking - strange, beautiful, odd, a little disturbing, and usually quite witty. Some have made me laugh out loud, while others send a chill down my spine.
Of course, Blahnik's shoes speak from themselves as works of art, however the way that Boman has juxtaposed them will the different set-ups or mise-en-scene is truly wonderful. If only we could have such still lifes in the odd spaces of our homes! This book will be a great addition for any fashionista/art lover, and will be the most talked-about *objet* at your next gathering...ENJOY!!!

Great for the Grad & Beyond!.......2007-06-03
I bought several copies of this book for the graduation season, the young women I gave it to absolutly love it. Having to take on so many serious life defining decisions over the last 18 months of their lives, finally here was a book that presented actual futures to them in a interesting and, most importantly, real attainable way. I now give copies to my girlfriends (35+), with more than half of us expected to change careers more than 4x in our professional life, In Their Shoes is such a great look at not what could have been but what could still be!! The book is incredibly motivating and inspiring for the girl in all of us who is still saying "what do I want to be when I grow up" no matter what age you are.
The Book I Never Had As a Girl Growing Up.......2007-05-01
Ms. Reber has written an extraordinary book profiling 50 women and their amazing careers. There's a firefighter, a marine biologist, a senator, and an architect, just to name a few. But the amazing thing about this book is that along with finding out the nitty-gritty details (salaries, stress level, i.e., "the facts"), you also get a window into what a typical day is like for an environmentalist, a network executive, a world-class photographer, etc. Reber allows us to view these women up close by including journal entries, interview excerpts, and their advice on career planning. I loved, for instance, these words of wisdom from a district attorney: "Own your power. Know your value and your potential. Don't be afraid of it; don't be intimidated by it, and certainly don't deny it."
But beyond providing an insider's view into 50 careers, this book offers very practical tips on how to get started in a given profession. It also lets readers know "what it takes" to be, for instance, a screenwriter ("extreme self-motivation" and "no shortage of good ideas").
I really appreciate how reader-friendly and well-organized this book is. There's also a "then to now" timeline of each woman (where they went to college and what they majored in, previous jobs, and major accomplishments). It's very interesting to learn that not all these women knew exactly where their educational and career paths were taking them.
At long last, a book for teens and young women (or for anyone who's thinking about a career change) that provides useful, specific, helpful and concrete information about a whole bunch of really cool jobs. How awesome is that?!
An Awesome Menu of Career Possibilities for Women.......2007-05-01
I am a woman of almost 40 and happy in my career; even so, this book grabbed my interest! It is fascinating reading about all the different career paths these women have chosen, and the interview format and sidebars make it really enjoyable and user friendly. I WISH I would have had such a book as a high-school student or college student; it would've been helpful even in my late twenties when I switched careers mid-stream. I recommend this book to any woman who is wondering what could be out there for her!

Not the Best, But Still Has Some Good Things to Say.......2004-09-29
In this book, Out Of Their Faces and Into Their Shoes, John Kramp seeks to develop what he calls Lostology, or simply put the `study of the lost.' Through his study of the lost, Kramp hopes that he can uncover some information that may benefit those who try to witness to the spiritually lost.
Part One of Kramp's book deals with trying to get Christian readers to understand that lost people enjoy being lost. He points out that typical notions of lost people running around miserable all the time is not the case. Kramp emphasizes this point by using a string of examples of one being physically lost as a parallel to one being spiritually lost. He also stresses that it takes time and work to get one to admit that he or she is lost. While many of Kramp's insights are good, I think he misses a key concept: many (not all) lost people are miserable. I have heard countless testimonies (including one by the chairman of the deacons of my former church) of people who acted as if they had no worries, but were really torn-up inside. In seeking to debunk a possible myth for many, I think that Kramp may have overstated his case.
In Part Two, Kramp seeks to examine the way that lost people feel and act when they actually begin to admit that they are lost. He wants believers to understand better how to relate to those who are suddenly aware that they are lost and come to the church hoping to find directions. Kramp also desires to see Christians better pick up on the signals offered by lost people that they are interested in spiritual things. Kramp offers some good insights here. For many, the art of `reading people' is a difficult task. This section is filled with explanations of very obvious indicators that a person is ready to talk about spiritual things. Although, Kramp seems to move very slow from an initial contact to the actual presentation of the gospel. I believe hee may place too much emphasis on the understanding of the lost and not enough on the urgency of the gospel.
Part Three attempts to focus on the actual process that a person goes through in evangelizing the lost. Kramp hopes to encourage believers in their search for the lost by helping to draw a clearer picture of how important evangelism is. He also believes that one's lack of zeal for evangelism demonstrates one's lack of value for the lost. In the end, we must make evangelism a priority. This is perhaps the best section in the book. Here, Kramp steps away from the previous two sections that focus on the lost. Here, he nails many of us between the eyes with true-to-life examples of our excuses for not evangelizing, and an even more astute analysis of the thoughts behind those excuses. Kramp helps the reader to see that thinking about and doing something to reach the lost should be a consuming priority for the Christian. One point that I felt at odds with is the idea of re-centering of his life towards lost people; this seems contrary to Scripture. Certainly, we should be go looking for the lost! But I think if we were to truly re-center our lives on God, then we would have no problem developing a passion for the lost.
Finally, in Part Four, Kramp continues to offer advice to believers about how to go about reaching the lost. Here, he gives both practical advice and encouragement. In doing so, Kramp wants to give a realistic view of evangelism while at the same time encouraging believers not to give up too soon as results will follow from faithful work. He also emphasizes the necessity of waiting and working patiently with some people. Finally, Kramp tells us that celebration should be the result of a successful search. This final section is another good section. Kramp wants Christians to understand the hard work that often has to go into evangelism. This is important because when a visitation program starts up many come the first few weeks and then drop out when the results are far fewer than they expected. It is good to have a realistic view of evangelism that acknowledges that sometimes God allows us to reap the harvest immediately. However, it is also good to understand that more often, God gives us the responsibility of being involved in the long process of planting and watering as well. Patience and prayer are the farmer's strained muscles and sweat of evangelism.
Throughout the book, Kramp follows a general pattern: real-life illustration, example of Jesus from the gospels, explanation of appropriate action to be taken. Most of Kramp's insights are helpful, though perhaps over-stated at times. That is to say, some of the parallels he draws from being physically lost do not always transfer how he wants them to in terms of spiritual `lostness.' Amidst the many good things in this book, one major difficulty arises for me: the speed of Kramp's approach. Often I get the feeling that you are supposed to just sit back and passively interact with people, desperately trying to avoid breaking any laws of lostology, hoping that the individual will come to you searching for answers. Certainly, some people will require this sort of time and care, but sometimes people respond immediately to the gospel - even the ones who given no indication that they are lost. I believe the key is wisdom: one must know when to apply Kramp's lostology laws and when to look past the facade that many use to hide their pain.
Take a left at the Spanish Inquisition.......2002-07-18
This book has some decent ideas for the "politicaly correct" types of our modern age but personally I'm an old fashioned kind of guy.
If you want to save someone the quickest way to their soul is through their nervous system. Give me the good old days when a dunking chair or a pair of red hot pinchers could expedite our goal of helping the misguided see the light. It's the most efficient way of expanding our army and helping people to help them selves. Your target may not thank you now but I'll bet you have a good chuckle over it once you meet up again in heaven.
Anyhoo buy this book, get some ideas and save some ignorant heathens.
There is no end to doing good.
More than methods, Kramp offers wisdom........1999-04-10
If Christians really understood spiritually lost people around them they would talk about their faith more naturally. Unfortunately, most Christians do not understand non-Christian. They do not know how they think or how they feel. This book is designed to help Christians function on biblical terms as a soul winner. John Kramps "Laws of Lostology" offer Christians a chance to change their attitude and the style in which they tell others about Jesus. This book is a perfect study tool for small groups or Sunday school classes because its principles are easily communicated. It would also make a fine devotional for anyone who knows they need to share Christ with their neighbor, but just do not know where to begin.

In Their Shoes focuses on the issue of empathy as it affects the treatment of sexual offenders. It refines the definition of empathy, and reviews the history and theoretical applications thereof. The authors approach a variety of empathy-related issues, addressing its importance in both the therapist and client, and affirming that it is a skill that can be both refined and taught.
Examining empathy and self-esteem deficits, the importance of recognizing and expressing emotion, the measurement and development of empathy, and empathy as it relates to social and aggressive behavior creates a framework for observing offender behavior and training both offenders and therapists toward more empathetic behavior.
Contributing authors are: Dana Anderson, Ph.D.; Maxine Daniels; Philip Dodgson, Ph.D.; Ruth E. Mann, M.Sc., C.Psychol,; Heather M. Moulden, BA (H); Liam Marshall, BA (H); W.L. Marshall; and Geris Serran, BA (H).

Excellent.......2005-04-09
"The book is an excellent contribution to the field. It helps to bridge the dichotomy between empathy as a cognition and empathy as an emotion, by reviewing the body of literature and looking through the various methodologies and strategies. Dr. Fernandez & her contributors have set the standard for future examinations of empathy. The text, chapter by chapter, is the richest collection of writing on he topic to be found anywhere. I plan to share this book with students, collegues and clinical psychology trainees." by Jack Apsche, Ed.D., ABPP
Book Description
Wouldn't parenting be easier if you could see into the mind of your child?
Learn to hear what your child can't or won't tell you--and
Understand Behavior
Build Values
Nurture Closeness
Solve Problems
In her popular
Boston Globe column "Child Caring," Barbara Meltz has been writing about real-life parenting issues for more than a decade. She has found that instead of divorce or moving--the situations parents think of as stressful--children's concerns are often linked to commonplace events such as sleepovers or the first day of school.
In this wise, compassionate book, Meltz offers parents a unique window into their child's inner life. She includes candid, illuminating observations from kids themselves and offers advice on what to ask, listen for, or observe to decode puzzling behavior. . . how to get a child to talk about his or her problems. . . and how to find the best way to solve conflicts. By focusing on developmental trouble spots, not age, her approach is as helpful to the parents of a two-year-old as to those of a twelve-year-old. From keeping secrets to going to camp to larger issues, such as stealing or death in the family,
Put Yourself in Their Shoes offers a way to see inside a child's world--and help to make it safe and strong.

Enlightening and Empowering to both Parents and Children.......1999-11-17
Recently, I wrote Ms. Meltz regarding one of her regular parenting columns in the Boston Globe. Then, I remembered that I had a copy of her book, Put Yourself In Their Shoes, and e-mailed her the following day: I am glad that Dr. Brazelton encouraged you to undertake your column and predicated that you would write a book. I bought your book for reference purposes and I want you to know that I enjoy referring to it. To me, it is a breath of fresh air. You share information and observations WITH parents, about their children, in a refreshing manner .... with a voice that is empathetic to both ... you don't talk AT them. Thanks again.
Regards,
Elizabeth Milligan Maynard, MA

A great oral history..........2001-05-31
With the spurt of oral histories about in the last few years, I enjoyed reading this authors work. It is very forward and well done. It tells the mini-histories of many people who contributed to our victory in WWII. I found it a very quick, informative, and exciting reading experience. I also read 9-Lives by the author, and would also give that book 4 stars.
Watch out Steven Ambrose...part II.......2001-04-09
This is a spectacular collection of oral interviews that the author has collected from an amazing group of vets. Here you get first hand accounts of what it was like to have been a G.I. And like his book '9 lives', Elson has included a wide range of stories from different players in the war. He sat down and questioned each vet and was able to bring out thrilling and little known facts of the war in Europe. In fact some of these stories are found no where else, in no other books. My particular favorite was the interview with the paratroop...Elson was able to get the soldier to open up and share the terror and the excitement of combat. The stories are told so well that you can actually see, for example, the rain of artillery shells that pounded down as 'all of Holland would bounce 10 feet in the air', and could feel how close the speaker was to breaking down. I know the emotion was high during these interviews because you can feel it just by reading it. This is a gem of a book! And while you're at it check out 'nine lives'.
Elson has captured a piece of history........1998-06-02
"A Mile In Their Shoes" is full of interviews with World War II vets, it tells the story of the "War To End All Wars, vol. 2" as only the soldiers and sailors themselves could have seen it. Elson began interviewing veterans in 1987 when he first attended the reunion of his father's unit, the 712th Tank Battalion. Amazed at the stories some of those guys would tell, he thought to himself, "I've got to get these down on paper before they are lost forever." The result is "A Mile In Their Shoes." Written in a unique question/answer style, Elson guides the interviews with only an occasional clarifying question. Otherwise, he just sits back and lets the vets talk about their experiences. And what incredible experiences they were! "A Mile In Their Shoes" is an amazing historical project. How often do you wish that you had just listened a little closer to what your dad or grandad had to say about the War? I know that I wish I had listened closer to my father's tales of being in the Flying Tigers. Now that he has passed away, all I have is a photo album full of pictures I don't have a clue about. Aaron Elson has done a great service to the history of the World War II era.
