5 out of 5 stars Nick B. Herberger.......2007-08-02

I think this book gives it's readers some great nuggets of truth about truly living your college experience to the fullest. It is practical rather than theoretical and very easy to read.

The freshman year in college is a big deal, a HUGE deal ... it is a transition that few parents and students are prepared for. After working on campus in Student Life for many years I have seen how difficult this transition is first-hand. The Department of Education has shown that more that 1/3 of all new freshman will drop out before making it to their sophomore year and fewer than half of all new freshman will graduate from college.

"Been There, Should've Done That II" gives us some great "real-life" advice on how to weather the storm known as the Freshman Year in college!

5 out of 5 stars An opinion from a teacher with twenty years experience teaching math/computers.......2007-05-29

As a college instructor with over twenty years of experience, I can say without qualification or conditions that this is a book that should be passed out to all students at freshman orientation. Unfortunately, the advice given in the book is of the after the fact type. By that I mean that the messages are those of experience that can only be appreciated after you have the experience of not having it.
My favorite sections were about interacting with your instructors and understanding that for most people, the major is of limited relevance. In terms of interacting with instructors, simply talking to them on a regular basis and showing interest in the subject is the best way to get yourself over the top if your grade is on the border. I have never failed to give the student who showed interest and a desire to succeed the higher grade when the issue is in doubt. Students who try to excuse their way out the last week have never gotten it. In conversations with my colleagues, that opinion is universal.
This is one of the best books about how to really succeed in college currently available. The best part about it is that it is interesting and lacks that dull pedantry that seems to be a requirement in all the "How to Succeed in College" pamphlets that colleges and universities hand out to their students.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting idea... okay results.......2007-05-20

Urrgghhhh this book is so frustrating... I can not put it into words, well at least. I am not sure what I was expecting to get from this book, but I think I found some decent advice. That being said I think it really lacked any type of writing, I mean a little paragraph introduction would of been a nice addition for each section. All the advice was true, but unless you have no common sense or can not think critically it is all obvious. Some examples from the book, "Don't use an ATM at night by yourself", "Don't call a proffesor MR. or MRS.", "Don't skip class too often". There were a few that had decent advice, but the whole book was just that, sentences from former or current students. Which like I said is an interesting idea, but without any type of writing to go along with it, it is nothing special. So in my opinion there are books that are leaps and bounds better... all on this website, just search and you will find. This book is not worth $10.

4 out of 5 stars at least it's in their language.......2007-05-08

hopefully this can prompt a high school graduate to think for themself and not assume college is like high school where it's fairly mapped out for you. you dont have to accept everything at face value and it does require some effort and thinking on your part. and it's all based on snippets from other kids in college written in easy form. it doesnt have all the answers but gives you an idea that there ARE questions to be asked!

5 out of 5 stars THE BOOK THAT I WISHED I WOULD HAVE HAD.......2007-01-25

Of all the the books, advice, and other perils of wisdom that I was given before and during college, this is the one book I wished I would have had. I recently bought this book for my sister who will attending college shortly, and the book was read through from front to back in a matter of a few hours. I have a difficult time concentrating long enough to read, but even I found this book to be insightful and enjoyable. A MUST HAVE!!!!!!!!!!

I never received this book. It was ordered 2/15/07. My tracking # is 9102001206742165042080. I did receive the other books from that order but not this one book. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Every household needs this book.......2007-02-19

Very useful. Anyone and everyone will easily put this book to immediate use. You need this book and ought to keep it with you when you travel (I like the fact that it is compact and will fit nicely in the car). Get it.

5 out of 5 stars Doctors Book of Home Remedies.......2006-02-22

This book is very informative and well organized. It is easy to read and gives excellent, helpful, detailed solutions for nearly every imaginable medical problem, as well as information on when to see a doctor.

5 out of 5 stars Not a doctor but reads like one!.......2003-05-17

I bought this book after getting fed up taking myself to the doctor to hear that it is just a bad cold or something that could be remedied at home. I had the wonderful experience of letting myself get addicted to nasal decongestant. Not the saline spray! I know that my body can become resistant to antibiotics and the side effects are scary!

This book has all kinds of ailments. It is incredible how many alternatives there are to help with some of them. It is a book that does not just use herbs but items that you may have in your pantry. Who would have thought?

I love this book because he is not writing technical medical jargon. It is all there in laymen's terms to allow us to help ourselves and understand what we are reading. This book is well organized. The book contains the ailments in alphabetical order. You just need to know your ABC's. Their is an index in the back too. In every ailment that is in the book, there is a black box with important info. For example, he mentions that if it feels like this or you have a history of... go to the doctor. In this case he is being cautious and letting us know that the book is not going to help us with everything. There are times that we need to rely on a doctor. In this case, he is not trying to act like the end all and be all of information. This is one thing that disgusts me with other authors that write similar books. They are matter of fact that they will say if you have brain damage make a cup of tea and add eye of newt. It sounds far fetched but have you read some of the books that are out there?

Anyway, I highly recommend this book. It is a great little book: the middle of the night, on the weekend, at work, or on vacation it can hold you together until you can see a doctor. It can help you to cure it on your own. It has almost every ailment in there. It is definitely worth every penny. Here's to good health!

5 out of 5 stars Cheaper than a doctor, and more fun!.......2002-08-10

This book is an excellent source of information, with thousands of direct-to-the-point pieces of advice that are apparently effective (at least those remedies that I tried worked.) The doctors' advice is clear, direct and absent of techincal medical terms. It's a "do this" and "here's why" kind of advice rather than a lot of theory.

It's also fun to read; I've laughed out loud at some of clever writing. I originally bought this book for medical reference, and wound up taking it with me on vacation for "pleasure" reading. Not only have I learned a lot from it, but I showed it to my doctor and he agreed with the medical effectiveness of those remedies. I bought this book along with the Home Remedies Book for Children, and both are useful. But if you only want/need one, II (the blue cover) is the definite choice. It's more comprehensive and better written.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Graphics Gems-style book for audio processing.......2006-04-07

Like Greenbaum's previous work in this series, this book is packed full of articles on all phases of audio processing and synthesis. It is to the audio processing world what the "Graphics Gems" series is/was to the graphics programming world. Continuing the tradition from the first volume, this volume presents additional processing techniques, explores new areas, and teaches some basic concepts.
The book begins with a section of tips on how to make good recordings in various environments. The next section goes into the technicalities of sound synthesis, more precisely oscillator control and subtractive synthesis. Section 3 is a continuation from Volume 1, in that it continues with a discussion of basic signal processing operators like filters and transforms. A particularly interesting paper in this section is the concluding chapter, on integer arithmetic-based fast Fourier transforms.Section 4 is about spatialization. It doesn't exactly reveal what happens inside your Sennheiser Toltec processor, but it covers the basic ideas. Low-level must-know techniques, such as circular FIFOs and framing, are covered in some detail in section 5. Section 6 presents some popular tools, such as the SoX library, which is the swiss army knife of sound processing programs, and the wonderful synthesis toolkit by Perry Cook which is featured in his own book, "Real Sound Synthesis for Interactive Applications". It was a surprise to see a page on the QED package. QEDesign is an easy-to-use, multi-platform advanced digital filter design package. It is completely menu-driven and user intuitive, affording almost a non-existent start-up and learning curve. it is neither unique nor the best, but it's just a page out of the entire book. Music theory is the topic of section 7. This may be a foreign language for many engineers, as well as a foreign approach. For example, the authors explain what consonance and dissonance are, and how they fit in the sound scale, but there is no discussion of what physically happens, or, to be more precise, what psycho-physically happens. Auditory displays and auditory feedback are central to section 8, on sound design. The final section, section 9, reads almost like a Scientific American article on sounds in nature. It is very instructive. A very useful glossary of audio terminology concludes the book.
I highly recommend this book as a supplemental reference to anyone involved in the fascinating world of audio processing. However, this is really not for recording engineers, as there is much mathematics, signal processing, programming, and even some music theory involved.

4 out of 5 stars A convenient tool for identifying your Luger........2001-10-10

This 120 page paperback does a pretty good job at giving descriptions and adequate photographs of the various Lugers in the market today... even the newer Mauser Lugers imported by Interarms in the 1970s. Magazines (clips), stocks, holsters and even .22 caliber conversion kits are covered. The quantity manufactured of each type of Luger is included along with the detailed descriptions.

There is a section detailing values and "collector-recommendation comments" too.

Overall, I found the book helpful... and I would emphasize, the photos were well done.

Book Description

As lighted porcelain village pieces become more detailed and sophisticated, collectors are desiring to place them in more realistic settings. The Original Village Display Tips books is a basic reference for building displays. Village Display Tips: Volume II is more advanced. Topics include laying out villages around focal points, transitioning one village into another, merging pieces from one village into another effectively, and developing seasonal displays for spring or Halloween. It also includes adding multiple trains and other animation, as well as using wheat lighting to create brighter or more atmospheric displays. There are also more ways to assimilate water - waterfalls and streams; construct mountains and to develop interesting backgrounds. Additionally, instructions are provided to build several projects to detail a display. Whether just starting out or well seasoned, this informative book is another basic resource for all village collectors.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Just ok.......2007-01-09

The book has some ideas for pulling together a nice village. However, I think the average user is less interested in how to coordinate the colors of their village in an artsie-fartsie way and more interested in details on how to contruct a village background, how to hide cords, ideas for storage, et. The book does give a couple of examples, but more detail in this area would be more helpful. Overall though it is not a bad book and worth getting as a beginner if for no other reason than I didn't find anything else out there that was better.

4 out of 5 stars Village Display Tips.......2007-01-09

Probably a good book for the right people. I thought it would help with scenery design for 1/144th scale dolls' houses and it was not valuable for that purpose. But interesting all the same.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2006-03-12

Gave several ways of setting up different village and train scenes. Have not tried them yet but am looking forward to it

4 out of 5 stars Village Display Tips: Volume 2.......2006-03-05

This is a great book to give you some ideas in displaying your villages. It has nice clean pictures and some cool tricks to make water, scenes, ect. The only downfall for me was I wish it had a larger section on mixing trains with village pieces. It does contain a nice chapter on this, but it would be nice to see more info. If just village tips your after, then this is the book for you!

3 out of 5 stars Little dissapointed.......2005-09-10

The book was just ok. I thought it was way over priced, I expected to get lots of ideas for building a fabulous display along with directions. There were a few ideas and the discriptions could have been better. I will still use the book and ideas but had I looked at the book before buying it sight unseen, I probably wouldn't have bought it.
