Book Description
Albert Einstein, among the greatest scientists of all time, was also a man of profound thought and deeply humane feelings. His collected essays offer a fascinating and moving look at one of the twentieth century's leading minds.
Covering a fifteen year period from 1934 to 1950, the contents of this book have been drawn from Einstein's articles, addresses, letters and assorted papers. Through his words, you can understand the man and gain his insight on social, religious, and educational issues.

Essays of the last fifteen years .......2005-06-26
This volume collects essays of the last fifteen years of his life. The work has sections on 'Convictions and Beliefs' 'Science and Life' ' Public Affairs' ' Personalities' and 'His own people: The Jews"
The work features expositions of some of Einstein's major scientific work.
Among the personalities written about are Gandhi who Einstein greatly admires, Newton, Kepler, Planck, Madame Curie, Langevin, and lesser known figures Paul Ehrenfest,Carl von Ossietsky.
Einstein writes much about the terrible changes in Germany he saw in his own lifetime, the rise of Nazism and Anti- Semitism.
He writes about the creation of a national homeland for the Jews, his own Zionism, and his own connection with the Jewish people.
He writes too about his conception of world- peace, about the threat to the world brought about something he is no small part a contributor to, the harnessing of the atom.
In writing about himself in the opening section of the work he says, "I do the thing which my own nature drives me to do. It is embarassing to earn so much love and respect for it."
He celebrates the life of thought , of the solitary individual .
Einstein is the greatest modern example of Keynes dictum of how it is 'ideas' that change the world. He is the example of how one man alone , thinking, transformed our understanding of nature, and our power to change it.
In these essays the main interests of Einstein's life are touched upon. He writes with clarity and modesty.
An invaluable opportunity to be in touch with ' the Mind that defined an Age'.
Perfect for Travel, Quick Reads.......2000-03-24
Out of my Later Years is a collection of Einstein's speeches and articles covering not just physics but his thoughts on the social condition of man, of Jews, and of war as well as several speeches about the likes of Max Planck, Mahatma Gandhi, and Marie Curie.
As letters and speeches, these are written as the ordinary man that Einstein once was - very easy to read and understand. Even some of the physics lectures are understandable. Each is relatively short making this perfect for when you want to read something of substance but don't have much time.
The sections on Public Affairs are especially haunting as Einstein presents his arguments for the "global village" and advocated someting akin to the current U.N. - things that began to come into their own after his passing. In particular, there is an interchange between him and a group of Communist scientists that underlines the Cold War tension in its height and is a chilling read now in the Post Soviet Union age.
A different man.......2000-01-05
I found Einstein's desire to start a rock band at such an early age very surprising. A man before his time for sure. Singing about relativity while distancing himself from the groupies must have been difficult. The book reads like a good guitar riff, jolting one's mind from time to time. Excellent!

Book Description
The World-renowned women's rights attorney and civil rights advocate shares empowering life lessons learned from her career fighting on the front lines for victims' rights
Fearless lawyer, feminist, activist, television and radio commentator, warrior, advocate, and winner -- Gloria Allred is all of these things and more. Voted by her peers as one of the best lawyers in America, and described by Time as "one of the nation's most effective advocates of family rights and feminist causes," Allred has devoted her career to fighting for civil rights across boundaries of gender, race, age, sexual orientation, and social class. She has taken on countless institutions to promote equality, including the Boy Scouts, the Friars Club, and the United States Senate, often drawing from her creativity and wit to achieve results. And as the attorney for numerous high-profile clients -- she has represented Nicole Brown Simpson's family, actress Hunter Tylo, and Amber Frey, Scott Peterson's girlfriend -- Allred has helped victims assert and protect their rights.
Throughout her extraordinary memoir, in such chapters as "To Conquer, You Must First Conquer Yourself" and "Don't Be Victimized Twice," Allred offers colorful -- sometimes shocking -- examples of self-empowerment from her personal and professional life. Presenting nearly fifty of her most memorable cases, she takes us deep inside the justice system to show how it's possible to win, even in the face of staggering odds.
Allred opens our eyes not only to the significant positive strides we've made in recent decades, but more important, to how much further we still have to go to empower all members of society -- especially women, minorities, and others who are deprived of their rights. Fight Back and Win is a powerful testament to Gloria Allred's trailblazing career and the battles she has fought alongside countless brave individuals to win justice for us all.

Thank You Gloria.......2007-09-19
Thank You Gloria Allred!
Well written and great insight! She reminds us all of the great challenges women have to overcome to achieve equal status in our society.
I would vote for HER for President of the United States in an instant!
FIVE STARS***** BRAVO GLORIA ALLRED.......2007-09-03
A MUST READ FOR ALL*****
GLORIA ALLRED HAS ACHIEVED WORLD RECOGNITION FOR HER PURSUIT OF JUSTICE AND EQUALITY*****
HER BOOK SHOULD BE 'REQUIRED READING' FOR ALL.
Should be titled "fight back and make me richer".......2007-08-16
Just a venue for further self-aggrandizement. Gloria Allred has made her self rich by taking on such villians as childrens haircutting salons who charged different rates for boys and girls and fast food restaurants who's employees refuse to hand out discount coupons. In the process she is millionaire sucking money out of her victims forcing them to settle rather than endure long drawn out court proceedings and bad publicity.
And in the end her clients get a pittance in settlements and she is a millionaire. I would be curious to see where her clients are today. Way to go Gloria. Your legacy is undeniable. You are everything that gives lawyers a bad name.
Gloria is one of the top lawyers in America........2006-11-05
This book was very inspirational and a interesting read. I would highly recommend it to anyone. Gloria is a very strong woman who is determined to fight for justice. She's a breath of fresh air. Her book was excellent.
Not worthy of the subject.......2006-08-18
The best part of the book: Introduction by Lisa Bloom, Allred's daughter. We got a glimpse of the woman behind the media. Second best was Chapter 1, Allred's own all-too-brief biography.
The rest of the book consisted of a rather smug collection of "wins" in the diverse areas of civil and criminal law. Allred reminds me of a fierce mother bear, fiercely protecting her cubs. She'll go far more than the extra mile to win justice for clients and causes, especially those related to discrimination and sexual assault or harassment.
It is important to understand that Allred thinks (at least in this book) like a prosecutor. Putting away the bad guys is good, she says, and good for society. At one point she says prison is designed for punishment as well as rehabilitation -- but from everything I read, today's prisons are all about punishment, and about making angry people even angrier. Allred never does the math: $20,000 a year to keep someone in prison, but zero dollars available for mental health and drug rehab for many.
Major disappointments:
(1) Allred never considers what happens when women make false accusations against men. I've been friends with 2 males who have been falsely accused of harassment and (in one case) spousal abuse. Both were so astounded they didn't take steps to protect themselves. They were left bitter and hostile to women, when eariler they were strong supporters of feminism.
She also rants about exposure of women who come forward with accusations. For example, Kobe Bryant's lawyers raised questions about whether evidence was consistent with having multiple partners in 3 days. Yet this question is legitimate: any decent defense lawyer will seek evidence for alternative interpretations of the evidence. Accused men and women have rights, too.
(2) Allred suggests women take self-defense courses and save up for legal fees. But realistically, why not suggest that women use some common sense? One of Marv Albert's female accusers complained that Albert had harassed her -- but then entered his room a year later to "help him send a fax."
Come on, folks! This gets lame. Why didn't she call a hotel bellman or security guard as an escort? Why not suggest that parents (and hotels) train young women, "Don't go into a guy's room alone unless you have solid reason to believe he's trustworthy." We teach college students to ask for a "safe walk" to their cars at night. The same principle applies here.
(3) Finally, as I read, I became increasingly curious about who pays for Allred's clients. Did Amber pay Allred's fees on a massage therapist's salary? Did the District Attorney use tax money to help a witness for the prosecution (when defendants rarely have adequate funds to do the same for their witnesses)? Or did Allred accept the case pro bono to reap publicity, not to mention fees to "negotiate" Amber's book contract?
All these approaches are (as far as I know) legal and ethical. But we'd get a better sense of how justice is done if we knew whether prosecutors actually recommended Allred to the witnesses and/or paid her legal fees. And if someone else paid, we'd get a whole new perspective on alliances in each case.
It's hard to believe these clients just picked up the phone book and saw "Allred" under A's. Even if these witnesses saw Allred's name in the paper, I would like to know.
A much better book:The Defense Is Ready: Life In The Trenches Of Criminal Law by Leslie Abramson and Richard Flaste. Written nearly ten years ago, it's a thoughtful look at the justice system, even when you don't agree with everything Abramson has said and done.

Fight BACK Gloria.......2007-10-10
Gloria is an inspiration she sets forth Morality, Equality, Human Rights and makes you want to stand up and FIGHT for your rights! Dont Back Down!! Let Life's lessons guide you to others awareness and resolutions!
great listening.......2007-06-28
I bought this book for my sister. She has five kids ( all boys) and is a elementry school teacher, so she does not have much time to read adult books. Having the book on CD let her realx and enjoy her time in the car after and before picking up the kids. She said it was very good book and was amazed at all the things Gloria Allred has over come. If I had bought her the hardcover I don't think she would have been able to enjoy the book as much as she did.

Teach your children well.......2007-08-31
We teach our children many things. One of the most important my father taught me was that I was unlike any other person, and only I could be the best at being me. In this beautiful bedtime story, Diana Donald teaches that fundamental lesson: that our cores are made of love, and that those cores are unique and special. The world becomes a magical and rich place, full of joy and not fear, if we know and honor our cores, not only only when we are children, but to the end of our lives.
My children are now teenagers. I would have loved to read this book to them when they were young, and reinforced my father's lesson in yet another way.
My Special Angel.......2007-01-31
A perfectly delightful bedtime story for children. The illustrations are colourful and the sound on the audio is soothing. My children all have their own copies, and I have purchased with confdence My Special Angel for baby gifts. I loved the author's comment "children of all ages". My best night's sleep is when I listen to the audio myself, just before falling asleep.
imagination ... our direct line to greatnes.......2007-01-15
We build a new tomorrow on the plans we make today. Everything we make happen in our lives comes as a thought or a vision first because we can't give birth to that which we haven't conceived.
With imagination there's always a way. Imagination is what we were given in order to see inside. It's there that the seeds of our dreams were planted inside long ago. And it is there that we realize those dreams are ready to be born. So use that imagination that was given to you. Use it to connect with your deepest and highest self. Use it to paint the pictures of those dreams. Use it to take you to where you want to be. Get out that canvas and start painting and see it all with that inner eye. Imagination is our direct line to healing. Imagination is our direct line to greatness.
We're all essentailly capable of greatness ... because greatness is simply the human spirit stretched ... one brush stroke at a time.
Pick up your paintbrush and watch it all come to fruition. Give life to that which you have conceived. If you can see it, it will happen. Know in your heart that power is yours. light and love always ... Diana

Customer Reviews:
Fifteenth Book in the SVHSY Series.......2003-03-22
In "On My Own," Jessica Wakefield pursues Evan Plummer in an attempt to break the [mold] her friends have of her--that she only dates "popular, preppy, superficial jocks." However, if she'd read Evan's "10 Things That Make a Girl My Type" list, she'd probably realize they're obviously not a good match. Not only that, but she's still not over Will Simmons, which makes for a few uncomfortable scenes. In my opinion, she should take Evan's advice and stay single for awhile, sort things out, which, by the title, I thought she'd be doing in this book. Next one then?
A plus to "On My Own" is that Ken Matthews is more in the spotlight, though not exactly on good terms. Apparently he's having problems with his dad, who has been avoiding him because of his demanding job and new girlfriend.
Then there's the question that's been lurking in the back of my mind for the past couple of books: Where's Jeremy? He and Ken are the few halfway decent guys in this series and deserve a little more recognition than what they're getting. Well, Angel too, especially since he seems to have fallen off the face of the earth as well. At least Andy Marsden (the comic relief and one of my favorite characters in this series) has considerable time spent on him, mainly dealing with his anxiety and confusion over Six Hansen, the perky sophomore he's asked out on a couple of dates. Good ending between these two, by the way.
Overall, this is a good addition to the SVHSY series. Jessica and Ken fans should like this one especially since there's more character development of each one.
On my own.......2002-03-02
In this book Jessica is finally dating Evan Plummer. But is it what she wants? She gets really confused when all her boyfriends show up at a sports awards night(Will,Jeremy,Evan)and she is confused over who she really likes.Evan gives her advice and Jessica decides to be single for a while.Personally I think she should've stuck with Jeremy instead of dumping him for slimeball Will.
Ken's dad has got a girlfriend and Ken doesn't like her especially when his father goes out on a date with her instead of coming to the sports award night.Ken's father is such a jerk and I'm suprised Ken hasn't hurt him yet. Also Conner's jealous because Elizabeth is not spending enough time with him.
This series is probably the best of all the Sweet Valley's and all the books are simple easy reads. They also have cool diary-like sections between chapters with letters,e-mail,characters personal thoughts, polls, stories and homework and college applications all done in a specific handwriting font for each character. These books are great if a tad on the melodramatic side and are easy enough to read so there's no excuse not to try one.The first one(being a Jessica fan)put me off but now I love them.
So go out and grab a copy and Happy Reading!!!!
NO WILL?.......2001-04-15
OK, I know that Will is a total pig. He let Jessica's life become trashed all for his crazy girlfriend who should be put in front of a firing squad. But I think that after all the hard work that Jessica put into getting Will, she should at least have been able to continue seeing him instead of grungy, hug-the-trees Evan. I think she deserves someone better than Evan, and even though Will is a jerk I think he and Jessica compliment each other perfectly as a couple..
IT's good.......2000-10-26
Well, Ken finds out his dad has a girlfriend. Who seems pretty cool to me. So he's dealing with his dad dating and stuff. Conner and liz are basically agruing the whole book because Liz has to work alot and Everytime they do see each other it's with other people and he wonts to be alone with her. Jess askes Evan out. They have an ok time. Jeremy ask Jess to an award show. She agrees as friends. Evan gets jealous and they agrue. Becasue he was going to ask her to there with him. They end up....
Weird..........2000-08-12
look i like this book Jess was my favorite character always! but she used to be able to get over everything and anyone and personally i would like to see jeffrey french come back. You remember him right? Well all the diehard fans do. He used to date liz but jess had a monster crush on him and they even kissed behind liz's back. But i want him to come back and be with jess but that probably wont happen so jeremy should dump jade and stick with jess. Plus evan always went better with liz. Didnt he have a crush on her in the beginning? I want to see jess get in a rumble with melissa and have lila finally stick up for her best friend and not follow the crowd. It just isnt the same without her and jess plotting to steal people's boyfriends. I realize that this has nothing to do with this book but i think everyone should know!
