Book Description

Those extraordinary little events in your life happen for a reason.
A coincidence-sometimes a silly little thing-changes the course of your day . . .
or even your life. Is it chance, or is God communicating with you?

When God Winks at You is packed with true stories demonstrating that God does communicate with us, making incredible things happen in our lives every single day. As you read the riveting accounts of everyday and famous people-including Tim Conway, Rudolph Giuliani, Billy Graham, and Don Knotts-you will begin to recognize the godwinks in your own life, both past and present. Through these tangible signposts from God, we receive personalized messages that reassure us, stop us from worrying, chart our path in life, and help us keep the faith.

When God winks, He is reaffirming that there is absolutely nothing about us that He does not know-our every hurt, our every desire.
And that to me is very comforting

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING READ!.......2007-09-27

This book was an OUTSTANDING read! The compilation of real stories is so encouraging. It is one of those books you don't want to stop reading, so you read small bits at a time to make it last longer! This is a must read and would make a great gift for friends and family. If you aren't a believer in God's hand in your life...or in God at all for that matter - this one will really make you think twice. It's not a religious "corny" book - its real stories, about real people and their very real "God wink" experiences!

5 out of 5 stars A Divine Appointment to Make.......2007-08-13

You don't have a clue about being present until you start paying attention to what's in it. Only for the true seekers of God's will for their life and those who want to be awakened from their aimless slumber. If you're stuck on PRESUMING God's will for your life in stead of standing in faith with the humility to be open for whatever HE may call you to purpose in and KNOWING that it's HIS will, (which is a little more than just a feeling) ...you'll miss it. But for the one who is ready to lay it all down and consider the cost with the price of surrending their life to do what God has and step in faith no matter where it leads...you've got to take this ride and journey through this wonderful sharing.

5 out of 5 stars I've bought 18 copies and intend to buy more -- here's why..........2007-06-16

This little book is a tremendous book to share the presence of God working in our lives. It is a very easy book to read (like eating chips), incidents in various lives of celebrities and ordinary people that are too powerful and miraculous to be "coincidence"... after reading, you become so much more aware of how God has "winked" at you through His actions. It is exciting to suddenly be aware that God is actually working in various incidents in your life. I've given 18 books away so far, and the recipients are excited about sharing their copy with others -- a "pass-along" book. I intend to buy 10 more soon, so I can share with whomever God "winks" into my path. This has become a "book ministry" -- glorifying Him through passing along books.

THIS BOOK IS A GREAT SPIRIT LIFTER. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AS A GIFT FOR ANYONE WANTING TO SHARE SOME INSPIRATION. IT IS A SHORT READ AND WELL WORTH THE TIME

This is a great short read on the miracles that impact our lives every day...many of which we don't understand until years later!

Book Description

It is not by accident that you just picked up When God Winks. Whether you call it synchronicity or coincidence, what brought you to this book today is worth remembering. In fact, you may have suspected all along that there is more to coincidence than meets the eye. These seemingly random events are actually signposts that can help you successfully navigate your career, relationships, and interests. SQuire Rushnell shows us that by recognizing our "God Winks," we can use the untapped power of coincidence to vastly improve our lives.

The author applies his compelling theory as to why coincidences exist to fascinating stories in history, sports, medicine, and relationships involving both everyday and famous people including Barbra Streisand, Charles Schulz, Oprah Winfrey, Kevin Costner, Mark Twain, and Presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.

1 out of 5 stars Quite Disappointing.......2007-09-28

This book was extremely disappointing. I was very excited about it. I've had times in my life when I KNOW the Lord has worked and I was hoping this book would help me be more in tune to the Lord's work in my life and help me see specific situations I may have missed. What a joke!!!

The book seems to be more of a manual for how to use coincidences to do what you want and feel good about it. Many of the examples of "God Winks" lead people to do things that our Lord would not approve of (one example being divorce).

But my biggest complaint is that the vast majority of the author's examples of "God Winks" comes from the rich and famous. I got the impression that the author apparently can not even relate to or understand the work of God in the average person's life. This mistake on the author's part could lead to a reader becoming hopeless rather than hopeful that the True God is working in their life.

I did not come away from the reading believing that the author knew and understood the True God of the Bible, though I did gain some benefit from reading the book. Reading it did remind me that God does work in my life in a personal way and that I need to always be looking for that work - and more importantly that I need to acknowledge, cherish and remember that work.

I would like to share two instances that I know God worked in my life. One could be considered a "coincidence" but the other is just God's work. And both are simple, average examples of the Lord working in an ordinary person's life. They do not describe any life-changing events, but they are God's work non-the-less.

1) My car - a Subaru Justy - was doing it's job getting my family of 5 around (two in car seats!). We joked about it being the clown car because we could all squeeze in and it looked funny; all of us piling out. The driver's side seat belt broke. We called to find out how much it would cost to fix and discovered that we really, really could not afford it, but what else could we do? Days later we received a letter in the mail informing us that the seat belts had been recalled and we could have it repaired at a dealership for free. What a BLESSING! This seems like a coincidence (or a "God Wink") but I took it for what it was....the Lord watching over us and taking care of our needs.

2) Shortly before my grandfather died we made a trip to visit him. He was my favorite person in the world. The whole time we were there (as other times before) I would get on to my boys for being loud and rambuctious. My grandfather would sit in his chair in the living room and seemed to be sleeping. He was very frail. I was afraid that my boys would bother him. At one point the boys came bouncing loudly into the room. As I was about to get on to them and scold them for being loud I looked over at my grandfather. He was sitting in his chair laughing! He was wasting away at the end of his life, yet he was enjoying his grandsons' romping around his house. That was pure gold to me. You can't call this a coincidence. You could call it a "God Wink", but after reading Rushnell's book I have an aversion to that term. God did move and speak into my life, but it was absolutely nothing like what Rushnell describes in his book.

I could give many more boring examples of how God has worked in my ordinary life. They probably wouldn't be as appealing as Rushnell's examples because they weren't coincidences on my path to being rich and famous. But they are real examples of a real God working in an ordinary person's life. And they didn't lead me to do something that God would not approve of, quite the opposite. All of the personal experiences I've had with God working in my life have led me away from sin and toward God.

All that to say that if you believe in the God of the Bible don't waste your time reading this book. Instead spend the time really thinking on and praying about how the Lord has worked in your life. Thank Him for it and rejoice!

Book Description

As elegant as his bestselling How to Know God and as practical as his phenomenal The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, this groundbreaking new book from Deepak Chopra contains a dramatic premise: Not only are everyday coincidences meaningful, they actually provide us with glimpses of the field of infinite possibilities that lies at the heart of all things. By gaining access to this wellspring of creation, we can literally rewrite our destinies in any way we wish.

From this realm of pure potential we are connected to everything that exists and everything that is yet to come. “Coincidences” can then be recognized as containing precious clues about particular facets of our lives that require our attention. As you become more aware of coincidences and their meanings, you begin to connect more and more with the underlying field of infinite possibilities. This is when the magic begins. This is when you achieve the spontaneous fulfillment of desire.

At a time when world events may leave us feeling especially insignificant and vulnerable, Deepak Chopra restores our awareness of the awesome powers within us. And through specific principles and exercises he provides the tools with which to create the magnificent, miraculous life that is our birthright.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic way to find yourself!.......2007-07-08

I LOVE this book! I have read it three times, and each time it strengthens my knowledge of life and the Universe even more. Deepak gives scientific and spiritual information on how to live your life according to what your soul wants, therefore fulfilling your most powerful life desires the instant you ask for them. It really does work, and I consider this to be the most valuable of all the spiritual self help books I have bought to date! Buy it, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars DR CHOPRA'S BEST WORK YET--A FIVE STAR AUDIOBOOK!.......2007-05-09

Since 1995, I have listened to and read Deepak Chopra's books, tapes and CD's. Since I have TOTALLY enjoyed the tapes so well, I have upgraded to Dr. Chopra's CD audiobooks. This audiobook was patterned after my favorite audio book on tape by Dr. Chopra "Syroniticy". These tapes were listened to so many times that I just about wore the tapes out. So I ordered this CD set The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire", and I was even more impressed. It is very much like the original set of tapes, however, more updated and is again, as always, so inpirational! This is a must have set of CD's for any Deepak Chopra reader or listner!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book instead of "The Secret"!.......2007-03-01

Deepka Chopra wrote the book long before Rhonda Byrne's wrote "The Secret."
I admire Chopra's belief that if we go with the flow of the Universe and listen and look for clues that appear all around us, we will have a happier and more fulfilled life. However, he doesn't claim that if you visualize getting a diamond necklace, you will get one. "The Secret" is hogwash.

4 out of 5 stars You can fulfill your desires........2006-12-15

I bought this book and put the meditations into practice almost 3 years ago. As I look back, I can see that once I focused on what I wanted, I got much of it.

I wanted children.. a boy and then a girl. I got exactly that. A boy and now a girl. Coincidence? I don't know.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2006-11-07

I really enjoy most of Deepak Chopra's books. In this book he gives you more ways to look at your life and how your can enrich it.

Spirituality, optimism, career planning, and self-help neatly blend together in this highly useful guidebook on living one's true purpose. Step by step, Adrienne shows readers how to discover one's calling (learning how to take advantage of synchronicity, intuition, and "uncommon sense") and organize life accordingly. This coauthor of The Celestine Prophecy does not promise a payoff of material wealth or worldly fame. Rather, she suggests that "writing your own job description" and "doing the dream" will result in a more spiritual and meaningful life. Her most impressive leadership comes in the section called "Deep Water," where she addresses the obstacles and suffering that frequently block the path to enlightenment. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

The co-author of The Celestine Prophecy Experiential Guide helps readers uncover the unsuspected, untapped power of synchronicity and intuition that will bring success, satisfaction, and serenity.

Everyone really has a purpose in life, says Carol Adrienne in her new guide to harnessing the power inside yourself. The question is: How do you learn to go with the flow and let your true nature guide you?

Chapter by chapter, The Purpose of Your Life explains how to locate the source of your innate energy and focus it, how to align yourself with the natural forces that swirl around us always, and how to develop the intuition that fosters synchronicity. The book is packed with illuminating anecdotes and profiles of fascinating people -- from artists to urban planners to Zen masters -- who describe how they found their own purposes. There are practical exercises throughout, along with charts, self-questionnaires, and other tools that help you understand yourself and your deepest aspirations.

As you learn to recognize and trust the voice of intuition, you'll find new doors opening and new possibilities everywhere. You'll feel invigorated by the potential you've unleashed, a power that will only grow with each new accomplishment. And you'll discover the serenity and satisfaction that come only to those who are living life to the fullest. The Force is with you -- all you have to do is reach out and start to use it.

5 out of 5 stars A great guide book for a seeker of Purpose.......2007-05-30

Carol Adrienne has written an excellent primer on the subject of Purpose. Whether you are a writer or speaker on the subject of Purpose, this book provides some important guidelines to simplifying an otherwise complex subject. The insights and the 'Talking to Yourself'sections at the end of each chapter are especially helpful.

5 out of 5 stars excellant career guidance.......2006-03-09

I found this a very helpful book filled with ideas for people to find their purpose. I am a career guidance councelor and ninety percent of my clients do not have a purpose for why they are doing what they are doing in their work. They come to me saying "somethings missing in my work or life". It's often because they do not have a purpose which this book can help them create. Purpose is something we create or decide on. Many people think it's something mystical and we discover it by accident. This book gives people specific tools to help identify a meaningful purpose.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Starting Point.......2004-02-16

The optimism in this book combined with its emphasis on the link between intuition and synchronicity was infectious. I wanted to learn more! A new book that I stumbled across has become my companion to this one. It is called LUCKY YOU!, by Randall Fitzgerald, and it takes this book's themes and subject matter and adds to it information about using dreamwork and meditation practices and even prayer to help create streaks of good luck in our lives. Both books are relentlessly inspiring and full of optimism and hope. I liked all of the stories and the author's own anecdotes about creating good fortune.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring true stories and practical spirituality!.......2003-10-07

The co-author of The Celestine Prophecy Experiential Guide has put together this excellent collection of suggestions, ideas and true life stories to inspire one to find one's higher purpose, and a jolly good job it does! It is interesting, well-written and entertaining throughout, with each chapter finishing with a few straightforward questions and exercises to move you on in the right direction. Part three, "deep water", deals masterfully with the darker and more difficult experiences one sometimes has while trying to connect more deeply with the soul's purpose.

A major theme is developing an awareness of synchronicity (meaningful co-incidence) experiences as guiding posts for deeper personal development. There are a large number of interviews with people from a wide range of backgrounds, all of whom have come to find their unique purpose through such ideas. Quotes from the famous such as the Dalai Lama and Frank Zappa (!), and not so famous are also highlighted throughout the text e.g."intuition is the creative, universal intention expressing through you" and "either I am lost, crazy and screwed up, or I am found and on a difficult part of the path".

I found the chapter on "the void" particularly supportive, especially the section on "holding your centre during confusion, chaos and fear". Carol Adrienne is not afraid to explore the sometimes harsh realities of the spiritual journey, but the book is essentially upbeat and positively inspirational.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the materialistic worldview........2007-08-24

This fascinating book by one of the intellectual giants of our time falls somewhere between Jung's "Memories, Dreams, Refelections" and Timothy Leary's "Flashback". It gives an overview over Grof's life and his personal experiences with realities that lies beyond what the materialistic-scientific worldview considers 'possible'.

Some of the anecdotes are taken from his previous books, but they are certainly worth telling again. Experiences with esp, reincarnation, energy-transferring (Swami Muktananda) and not least lots of experiences with all kinds of mind-altering drugs, often taken at exotic places like old mayan temples and the australian desert.

Many of the examples are taken from his own life-story, but a lot of them comes from his yearlong work as a therapist, with LSD and later holotropic breathwork.

Few people challenges the ortodox scientific worldview with such vigor and depth as Grof (guess a book like this could give Richard Dawkins nightmares for weeks, if he had the courage to rewad it). But having said that there seems to be in his works a strong tendency to make spirituality synonymous with 'experiences' and to underestimate the value of Silence, introspection and emptying the mind.

In this book Grof certainly comes across as more of a 'head' than in his previous more scientific works, like a man who likes to take drugs and let the vision of the world be altered by chemical means.

All in all an important collection for anyone interested in a more comprehensive picture of the world around us.

2 out of 5 stars nice cover but dubious information.......2007-08-23

I would be glad to be proven wrong but having read half of this book it has lead me to feel skeptical...even though I was looking for information to make me believe more (see angels and aliens, deepak chopra, etc.)

Unfortunately this book reminds me more of the whitley streiber style of taking too much time talking of personal experiences (with much apparent filler of unrelated personal life details and name dropping).

And also of the Streiber style of completely condemning the scientific method and methodology in general. At least STan does not go so far as to talk of a scientific conspiracy but he does throw the baby out with the bath water.

Case in point and the chapter that really disappointed me was on the quartz crystal skull. Stan gives vague annecdotes with little research into these episodes, including a jaguar in the living room which left Stan's subject in (giggles here) "metaphysical horror". The chapter ends not with an assessment of this mysterious object but stans failure to meditate infront of it and instead right a fiction story.

Hey, kudos to him for researching the mysterious, but am I the only one who is disappointed their is not a more sober, investigative approach? Stan to me gave me no more insight into the supernatural than you may get from someone at a busstop with unsubstantiated claims other than his apparent own experiences which even those have little to back up.

BTW: found much more intriguing info on the skull on wikipedia of all places.

I hope stan's other books are better, with less filler of his personal life and less like flaky books like "connecting the dots' and more like "angels and aliens" or the spirit molecule. the last two being much more sober, investigative and objective.

I like books on spiritualism and the supernatural a lot but am very tired of people exploiting the genre with their empty supposed studies. Anyways the cover was cool. I will do my research better next time.

5 out of 5 stars Light but entertaining read.......2007-06-20

Most of Stan Grof's books are full of Big Thoughts, but this one is on the light side. Good bedside reading. Short chapters are just the right size for a one a night rhythm.

4 out of 5 stars Impossible? Never..........2007-05-24

Grof's latest work tells stories some of us have heard many times before, but it's interesting enough anyway. I think the book is more accurately entiteld "When the Improbable Happens: My Speculations about Reality, Most of Which Conveniently Ignore the Most Lucid, Rational Possibilities." Unfortunately, despite what some reviewers claim, there is absolutely nothing paradigm-busting here. Grof presents notable, novel coincidences, and suggests that such nuggets are veritable proof that there's something Very Deep going on. Unfortunately, not a SINGLE experience he recounts can be said to be literally "impossible." I mean, first of all, assuming they all took place as described, then they are the DEFINITION of "possible," since they otherwise wouldn't have taken place! The ONE SINGLE SOLITARY INSTANCE in which Grof himself has the opportunity to test his ideas and experiences in the realm of objective reality, with scientific empiricism, he fails to do so, essentially because he gets the creeps when he ponders the possible repurcussions of *proof*. That's the problem with assigning meaning to coincidences; the only meaning they truly have is that that we assign to them! Think about it: in the realm of INFINITE POTENTIAL, just about anything is possible. On a moment to moment basis, few of us experience highly novel, completely weird coincidences. Um, yeah, duh! That's why they *seem* so strange and significant, simply because they're unlikely. The more unlikely and striking a coincidence, the more meaning we attach to it. Where is the scientific evidence that PROVES BEYOND ALL DOUBT AND RATIONALIZING AWAY OF THESE MATTERS? *It doesn't exist*. Where is the astral projector who can, in a controlled study, travel across a continent, read twenty words on a list, memorize them for an hour, and travel back to his/her body and repeat the words verbatim, with nary a single mistake? That never happens. Instead, we have information "suggestive" of such-and-such. Essentially, the book rests on the human feeling of "like, that was so WEIRD, dude!" to posit the objective existence of a realm of non-ordinary, um, stuff.

That said, the book is highly thought-provoking and interesting, despite the extremely huge holes in its logical foundations.

Again, I ask, where is 100% undeniable evidence? Where is the nuclear bomb of mysticism?

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Deepak Chopra Book and a Favorite Overall.......2007-06-05

This is a must buy for anyone who enjoys reading books with a slant towards "getting what you want", "law of attraction" types and "new age" or spiritual type self help books.

This book deals specifically with "coincidence", describing how many people don't realize there are reasons behind these synchronistic experiences. This book informs you how these events are not JUST coincidence, and how there are ways to fulfill your desires and create the life you want by paying attention and acting on them.

The writing is an easy comfortable read, is very much in-depth and there are suggested exercises for those who like to put action to what they read.

---*** THE BOTTOM LINE ***---
This is a must buy. I have read only four of this author's many books, but this is my favorite by far. I have re-read it many times.
This book is very in-depth and is just as applicable for a "newbie" to this genre or someone who has "read them all".

You will not be disappointed in any way if you get this book.

5 out of 5 stars The quality of product rec'd from Amazon.............2007-04-11

.....has always been of the finest quality; the shipping prompt, and nothing ever damaged or shop-worn. I've ordered via the I-net for about 6 years, and Amazon is the only supplier I can rely on for not back-ordering or delaying my product. Also, nothing is ever damaged; worn, or inferior in quality - something I can't say for the other retailers I've tried...often having to return the item, or even being improperly billed on my credit card. I sure feel safe and secure with Amazon - just the best. Diane Stirling.

5 out of 5 stars Ahh, coincidences...........2007-03-21

This is one of my most dog-earred books. Long before the so-called-secret came around, Dr. DeePak Chopra was writing about the science of vibrational levels, about the frequency of objects, about the power of thought and meditation. For many decades Dr. Chopra has lived the life, walked the talk and written the volumes from the most acceptable viewpoint of a scientist. He seems to be ahead of his times with a large portion of the planet certainly coming to the same focus. This book truly is an act of courage and an act of love. The reader will ponder life from a wonderfully fresh perspective, and will soon realize there is no such thing as coincidence. Coincidence is but a mirror we draw to us through our individual frequencies of the law of attraction. This book deserves far more stars than 5!

5 out of 5 stars Total Joy.......2007-03-09

This book is for everybody. I do not believe in absolute truth, but the truth that comes out of Chopra in this book points to absolutely every intricate piece of my life. As a psychotherapist, I suggest this as reading to almost all of my clients regardless of their beliefs. This book will enhance your perceptions of what is real and suggest to you the fact that there always has been room for "you" to "breathe."

5 out of 5 stars Scientifically based validation for many unexplained phenomena.......2007-01-03

This is the first written material that I have been exposed to that actually attempts to quantify (not just qualify) the possibility of unexplained phenomena in a truly scientific manner. It's the most depth I have seen any psychologist reach while studying the difference between the internally self-generated/projected vs. the possibility of externally autonomous psychological occurrences. For one who is involved in self-exploration, this particular work can be the catalyst for much inner growth & development. Be ready for Jung's abstract writing style, & have a dictionary & highlighter on hand for some fun & enlightening reading!

5 out of 5 stars occurences linked together in meaningful ways.......2006-12-29

where something other than the probability of chance is involved.

I've found this to be true in my own personal experience over the years but had never heard the terminology used to explain this phenomenon. Once I discovered it, I began looking up books on the subject and, to my surprise, discovered Jung. Since I had never had a psychology class this was my first direct exposure to him and I was very impressed.

I particularly enjoy the episode in the book where he is speaking with Freud and they both experience the synchronization of the book case event.

Highly recommended. Enjoy!
I think it is a terrific book overall.

5 out of 5 stars Scientifically Investigating the Unexplainable........2006-10-11

_Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle_ is an essay written by the Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung, first published in 1952 and republished by the Bollingen Series of Princeton University Press, translated by R. F. C. Hull. In this essay, Jung proposes the idea of synchronicity, a "meaningful coincidence of two or more events, where something other that the probability of chance is involved". Throughout his life, Jung had been interested in occult ideas and as a youth had experienced several occult occurrences. As a scientist, Jung sought to explain these sorts of occult occurrences through the concept of synchronicity. Jung was influenced by many of the ideas emerging from modern physics at the time, particularly as concerned relativity theory (Albert Einstein had been a guest at his home while staying in Zurich) and the quantum theory (Jung benefited from collaboration with the physicist Wolfgang Pauli and this essay and a related study by Pauli appeared together when originally published).

The first section of this essay is devoted to an exposition of the concept of synchronicity. Jung begins by explaining the concept of natural law for the scientist, noting how natural laws rest upon the principle of causality; however, since natural laws are only statistical proofs this principle breaks down at the microphysical level. To illustrate his idea of synchronicity Jung presents several instances of meaningful coincidences which illustrate the "law of series" as presented by Paul Kammerer. For example, Jung mentions a case in which the symbol "fish" repeatedly occurs in his life and in his relationships with patients throughout the period of two days. A second instance of synchronicity mentioned by Jung later in this essay involves a woman who was prone to an excessive "Cartesianism" (i.e. rationalism) and had a dream of a scarab beetle. Later a beetle was to appear at Jung's window while he was analyzing her freeing her of her rationalism. Occurrences such as these suggest the possibility of an acausal connecting principle. Jung mentions the thinking of Schopenhauer on fate at this point and he shows where Schopenhauer's thinking is wrong in light of modern discoveries; yet, he praises Schopenhauer for suspecting that the scientific understanding of natural law at the time was missing something. Jung mentions the parapsychological work of Gurney, Myers, Podmore, Dariex, Richet, and Flammarion. He notes that Dariex found cases where the probability of a telepathic result being due to chance were 1 : 4,114,545, and Flammarion found similar cases where the probability was 1 : 804,622,222. Jung also mentions the work of J. B. Rhine at Duke University on extra-sensory perception (ESP). He shows how Rhine devised experiments in which the probabilities of results being due to chance were extremely miniscule and furthermore separated experimenter and subject by enormous distances and reproduced similar results. Jung also mentions the work of the Society for Psychical Research in parapsychology and presents a summing up of the results on ESP. Jung mentions the role of the archetypes of the collective unconscious (according to his own theory) as they occur in instances of synchronicity, and suggests that they play a fundamental role in these occurrences. Jung next goes into a discussion of various instances of synchronicity, mentioning the case of the beetle. Jung also notes how in Rhine's experiments the mental state of the subject (i.e. whether he viewed the experiment in a positive light or was bored with it) came to determine the degree to which he indicated correct results. This again offers confirmation for Jung's theory that attentiveness to the collective unconscious is somehow involved in these occurrences of synchronicity. Jung suggests that synchronicity consists of two processes: an unconscious image comes into the consciousness and then an object in the world is discovered which coincides with this unconscious image. Jung relates this phenomenon to alchemy and magic (mentioning the writings of Albertus Magnus). Jung also mentions particularly in this regard the _I Ching_, a Chinese divinatory text used as an intuitive or "mantic" method for grasping a situation as a whole and placing the details against a cosmic background. Jung shows how the use of the _I Ching_ relates to the irrational nature of the unconscious and explains the differences between Chinese and modern Western thought. Jung also examines astrology as part of this discussion.

The second section of this essay consists of an astrological experiment conducted by Jung. In this experiment, Jung used statistical methods to examine the occurrences of astrological correspondences in married couples. Jung found evidence for the traditionally regarded "sun conjuncted with moon" and "moon conjuncted with moon" occurrences among marriage partners that exceeded those suspected due to chance. In this regard Jung again mentions the experiments of Rhine, as well as an interesting story regarding the Swedish seer Swedenborg whose dreams foretold a fire in Stockholm.

The third section of this essay consists of a discussion of forerunners of the idea of synchronicity. In this regard, Jung begins with a discussion of Oriental thought, mentioning both the idea of the Tao (translated as "God" or "Providence" by the Jesuits) of Taoist thought and the mantic procedures involved in the _I Ching_. Jung relates this to the theory of "correspondentia" in the thinking of medieval Europe. Jung mentions such thinkers as Hippocrates, Philo, Theophrastus Paracelsus, Pico della Mirandola, and Zosimos of Panopolis. Jung also mentions Kepler and his remarks on astrology and finally turns his attention to Leibniz, going into a fairly thorough discussion of his "monads". Jung also notes the role of number (which has real existence according to the Platonists), mentioning for example the comment of Gauss that "God arithmetizes" and a dream involving a geometrical square occurring in nature. Jung concludes this essay remarking on the role of modern physics in explaining synchronicity, emphasizing a "quaternion" with "space" and "time", and "causality" and "synchronicity" occupying opposing sides.

This book also includes the lecture given by Jung, "On Synchronicity" (1951), which appeared before the essay was written and essentially goes over the same material as present in the essay.

This book offers an attempt by Jung to scientifically explain the unexplainable. His discussion here is sure to not please the so-called skeptical rationalists. However, Jung uses the very methods of science to show that his idea of synchronicity has validity. For the discerning reader, this book and essay is sure to offer much food for thought regarding the nature of reality.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Chance, or: Mapping the Etherverse.......2005-02-16

Just as Oppenheimer's Shiva-jigging atom-stomp codified the nuclear sciences as a force to be reckoned with and redefined the method and madness of the battlefield for the 20th century, so in turn were set in motion a series of sub-atomic particle explorations that would ultimately serve just as destructive to long-held paradigms about the nature of the universe. The contradictory tenants of Quantum Physics desecrated the Newtonian Determinism that had dominated modern thought for some two hundred years: the electron 'cloud of possibility' and the photon wave/particle paradox shattered the comfortable, mechanistic notion of causality (cause and effect), relegating it to historical curiosity. In effect: these rigid clockwork rules, when viewed at the smallest sphere, suddenly turn elastic, "reality" dictated by the will of the observer and/or the constraint of the causal experiment: clockwork causality began to stretch like salt-water taffy before the conscious participant, giving Dali's soft-clock surrealism an eerily prescient scope. For empiricists and hardwired logicians, Quantum-theory was as dangerous and reality-threatening as anything Darwin pulled on the Secular Fundamentalists, and resistance to its baffling, frustratingly unfussy relativity continues to this day - some would rather reject it out of hand, rather than deal with the consequences.

Others, on the other hand, probed the quandary, and found therein substantive material for the more questionable aspects of this existence. Psychoanalyst Carl Jung latched onto the discoveries of his friends Einstein, Planck, Bohr (etc.), saw the correlation with Eastern philosophy and his own studies into the paranormal, and in 1952 published *Sychronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle,* an attempt to condense and conceptualize some very difficult peculiarities/inconsistencies that statistical science neglected to take into account - specifically 'meaningful coincidences', the inexplicable that occurred far too often to be products of chance. Or, as Jung put it: "Sychronicity... means the simultaneous occurrence of a certain psychic state with one or more external events which appear as meaningful parallels to the momentary objective state...(pg. 25)." In other words, the chaotic, malleable elements of the extreme microverse have a representative affect on our causal-ruled macroverse - although the manifestation of it cannot be adequately measured, due to its unpredictable nature - and to Jung's views, this was as a serious venture to be studied rather than outright dismissed.

Essential to this argument is the concept of a 'soul,' or soul-network: 'something' beyond the physical perception, and beyond the spatial limitations of energy, working in accordance to its own plan. Jung envisioned, beyond the mechanistic aspect of the 'normal' world, a broader framework of existence, in which all things are connected via an indefinable ether-verse, encompassing such derided/quizzical concepts as "meaningful coincidences," foreknowledge/precognition/intuition, ESP, telepathy, telekinesis, and so forth. As a human came to channel the Quantum theory, "...we must regard them as creative acts, as the continuous creation of a pattern that exists from all eternity, repeats itself sporadically, and is not derivable from any known antecedents (pg 102)."

Heady stuff! It's interesting to note Jung tip-toe around the `G' word (the thesis would have been outright rejected then and there by self-respecting scientists), instead incorporating the Tao, Schopenhauer's Will & various other cultural representations of an all-pervading force that, as the Chinese sages knew three thousand years before, could not be comprehended consciously, but through meditative "non-being" ... or the ~unconscious state~, Jung is quick to clarify. Integral to this discussion are archetypes, the common models upon which cultural icons/identities are patterned. Jung does not go into specifics here (for he mined archetypes throughout his career) but does pose several interesting notes - the theory of whether numbers actually existed, as archetypes, before human conception (and human existence?) was certainly something to ponder upon.

*Sychronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle* is divided into four sections, being 1) the establishment of the theory, 2) an experiment of statistical randomness to 'prove' Sychronicity by way of astrology, 3) a list of examples of similar concepts throughout the ages (the Tao etc. mentioned above), and 4) a lecture in 1951 wherein the genesis of this book was formulated. As a student of Eastern philosophy, nothing Jung stated here was exactly new or revelatory to my mindset; but when the dominant Western attitude of that period is taken into perspective, it is easy to see why this work would be deemed controversial and, a favored expression of shallow dismissal, "junk science."

Still, some reservations should be made here. For one, Synchronicity shouldn't be considered science, rather a metaphysical theory; and Jung falls into the all-to-common trap of claiming his hypothesis as irrefutable, using the higher-than-probable results of his tests and a number of "meaningful" coincidental stories to make his case. I suggest that anyone seriously investigating these theories make the effort to view both sides of the coin - those who support and those who refute the concept of Synchronicity and the innumerable derivations of Quantum possibility, for the following reason:

This thesis can be seen as an origin point for the current market of the New Age: hokum and free-wheelin' misinterpretation take voluminous cues from that established by Einstein et al. Although there are practical alternatives - self-help agencies such as PSI and similar motivational speakers a la Tony Robbins utilize these concept as the base platform of success: "To Think is to Create" - despite this, the more intricate (and exciting) aspects of Quantum Physics are often diluted by some into mass-consciousness vehicles for easy enlightenment - think of Redfield's bestselling poppycock-omnibus *The Celestine Prophecy,* or any number of Quantum-cannibalizing frauds designed exclusively for the bohemian soccer-mom set - and the increasingly nebulous 'pseudo' aspect of it subsequently strengthens resistance from traditionalists and skeptics.

This book is an excellent attempt to map the unknown, the indefinable *Something* so intrinsic with the ongoing process of life. A brave, massively influential analysis of all that 'beyond chance' - five stars.

5 out of 5 stars A Unified Theory of Mind and Matter........2005-01-21

Jung's "Synchronicity" is an essay about those moments when everything just seems to come together. Jung defined synchronicity as "the coincidence in time of two or more causally unrelated events which have the same meaning". Synchronicity is a cluster of meaningful patterns that normal cause and effect has not caused. Synchronicity is acausal. Beyond cause as we know it. A bridge between the known and the unknown, between the conscious and the unconscious. Though there have been others from the West that have expanded upon Jung's thoughts concerning synchronicity this is still a very good place to start. For further reading I would suggest looking to Jean Shinoda Bolen and F. David Peat, among others. For an Oriental perspective regarding acausality, synchronicity, may I suggest the "I Ching" and "Tao Te Ching". Lao Tzu, the author of "Tao Te Ching", is the father of Taoism. As Barbara Marx Hubbard has said, "The spiral of our evolutionary progress is turning back in time to reconnect with the great sage Lao Tzu". Taoism is a way of life that attempts to live in harmony with the unity of the universe by following the natural grain of things, of going with the flow. Wisdom is timeless and knows no bounds.

In "Synchronicity" Jung was trying to describe to the Western mind, his own included, the phenomenon of the alignment of universal forces with one's own life experiences. Much like Quantum Physics, Jungian Pyschology was beginning to leave behind the mechanistic universe of the 18th and 19th Centuries and starting to view reality as an organic whole. Our leading thinkers were becoming more than mere observers, they were becoming participants. Objectivity and subjectivity were merging. There are no lines of demarcation in nature, rather there are merely areas of confluence. Everything is interconnected. With Jung chance met design.

Synchronicity though subjective by nature, is scientific. Cynical skeptics will point out that the theory is not "Scientifically" verifiable because synchronicity is not quantifiable. That synchronicity is nothing more than magic, fantasy. The fact that the "Scientific Method" these same skeptics cherish was channeled via a series of dreams, including a dream within a dream, to Rene Descartes strikes me as ironic to say the least. Subjectivity created their system for objecting to subjectivity. Can't we all just get along? To quote Einstein, "As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain, and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality". All attempts to describe anything exactly fall short. Our best theorys are models of reality, not reality itself. Most, if not all, of our greatest scientists have also been mystics, or at least had a mystical experience. The "Promethean Impulse" or "Divine Inspiration" that has been granted to our greatest minds is not make believe. The answers to many of our scientific questions have come in the form of dreams, or other non-rational states of consciousness. It took a dreamer to realize that the Earth is round. There is always something new to learn. Jung was no charlatan. He was an optimist. He believed in our ability to grow and change. He spoke from personal experience tempered by thoughtful meditation. He claimed that the Universe is no coincidence and neither are we. I agree. Read Jung.

This book contains many wonders. It presents the deepest fruits of Wilson's half century of Joyce studies, as well as a history of alternative religion in America, studies of Allen Ginsburg and Marilyn Monroe, etc. I loved it.

    2 out of 5 stars one of wilson's worst.......2002-07-29

This is as bad as R. A. Wilson's nonfiction gets (though his fiction can get even worse). Most of these "essays" are self-indulgent and border on the literally meaningless, like the obscure and unmusical poetry he writes. Wilson, who claims he is beyond all models of reality, is in fact a True Believer in synchronicity (the theme of the book), Aleister Crowley and plenty of other occult hogwash. And as is always the case, he has not a single original idea of his own--all he does is re-state the works of others in his own superior prose. Many of Wilson's books have been accused of being mere fodder for his personal philosophy, incorporating the same jokes and the same sermons into a barely recognizable plot. That is not true, but much of what attracts people to his books is the way that he makes people see things in different perspectives.

This book has essays on physics, Sade, and Joyce. Both Ulysses and Finnegan's Wake are explained in ways that actually make a person want to read the books, while the Marquis de Sade is given his due as the master of disturbing literature.

What makes this book worthwhile for me is the essay on Tennessee Williams comparing him to Sade. I don't remember the play that he is discussing, nor does American Theatre for that matter, but what stands out is a praise for Williams as a true artist - "An artist must put out questions and let the audience figure it out for themselves. An artist is not there to provide the answers. Arthur Miller is not an artist because he spoonfeeds the answers to you. In every play Miller is running for elected office."

I am paraphrasing but in that one argument, I managed to crystalize and express all my doubts about political art - including agitprop, "identity art" and sermons disguised as plays. I knew that I hated these types of artistic expressions, but I always felt like I should like them especially when they agreed with my political philosophy. For that alone, this book is worth buying. You have a 90% chance of finding something in this work that states a constantly debated point so clearly that you wonder why it wasn't said this way to begin with.

    5 out of 5 stars Just a thought-.......2000-02-02

Learning Shakespear in High School is all part of the government military/industrial mind control program. It is designed to train the analytical/suspicious mind to deal with intra-relational problems and analize them instead of attempting to analize societal problems as a whole. This technique is continuated into adulthood by the use of soap opera scripts. The mechanism for the brain and thought programming is extremely subtle but profused in such rampant abundance which effectively renders overwhelming impact upon the unsuspecting. It has gone as far as to dictate laws for grammar and sentence structure. It seems disconnected from the theory but you will realize that speach or sentence structure is thought. Therefore by controlling sentence structure, your thought structure is also being controlled. Long run on sentences provoke deep drawn out thought on creative concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Finnegan's Wake explained... among other things.......1998-05-28

A caveat: while this book, like most of Wilson's works, rates a 10 (with me), this probably belongs in the advanced course, and might be beyond people who've never read Wilson before. If you don't know his style, his philosophies and his history, you might get lost in the muck. But, if you've at least made it through his "Illuminatus!" and "Prometheus Rising," then give it a shot. (Reading "Finnegan's Wake" also helps, but you won't have to in order to follow his analyses.)

Describable as one of Wilson's more straightforward exegises, "Coincidance" deals directly with concepts of quantum physics, Joycean symbolism and the "reality is what you can get away with" school of thought.

Bonus points, Wilson wrote this book entirely in "E-Prime," a variation of English with one subtle but significant difference. (In fact, I've written this entire review in "E-Prime" as well. The only exception appears in the quote above, a repeat of the title of one of Wilson's fictional works. Perhaps, if you figure out what makes "E-Prime" different, you might be ready to read "Coincidance" right now...)

We catch every green light, get a parking space in the busiest section of town, lose a job and get a job offer the very same day. Most of know it as synchronicity. Authors Charlene Belitz and Meg Lundstrom call it flow--the times when things happen effortlessly, everything falls into place, and timing seems perfect. Unfortunately, being in the flow often feels like an accident rather than a choice. By interviewing over 50 "flowmasters" and incorporating their own professional experiences, the authors came up with 14 practical steps to help us find our flow.

    Book Description

Imagine feeling as though the world is working with you, not Àagainst you. Imagine a day in which you make every green light and slip effortlessly into a parking spot in the most crowded part of town. You make a To Do list, and the people on it call you first. You turn on the radio just in time to hear the exact information you need. These meaningful coincidences, called synchronicity, are sure signs you are "in the flow."

Based on new, groundbreaking research, The Power of Flow goes beyond other books on synchronicity to provide you with sixteen easy-to-understand techniques that allow you to access this magical state of flow and create a richer, more satisfying life.

5 out of 5 stars Connecting with a Higher Power.......2006-08-09

This book gives exercises and examples of how a person can connect with the Flow of life and have more peace, joy, connection, and love in your life. Easy to read and easy to follow. Great addition to any spiritual library.

5 out of 5 stars Really worth exploring despite its new agey inclinations!.......2006-03-01

Despite the attendant new agey inclinations, I would like to say that most of the stuff in this book are really worth exploring. There are fourteen practical techniques based on indepth interviews with fifty people who had lived at high levels of flow.

Personally, and through adaptation and experimentation, I have played with varied forms of most of the techniques.

To read this book, and apply the stuff, one must approach it with an open and curious mind. A sense of discovery and anticipation certainly helps. As an engineer trained with a logical and analytical mindset, I can well understand the fears and apprehension of many readers, as well as the cynicism of some early reviewers.

Synchronicity is hard to explain. It's also hard to prove its existence but it exists, whether you like it or not. To me, sometimes it's better not to intellectualise it. Just go with the flow.

Over the many years running my own business, and doing what I love and loving what I do, I have personally "engineered" the many flow moments described in this book. The fruits have been very rewarding and fulfilling.

I believe in the motto: No venture, No Gain. Life is a daring adventure, or nothing (according to Helen Keller).

2 out of 5 stars The Power of BS?.......2006-02-19

I don't think this books was poorly written, as the 1-star reviewer did. But the whole flow/synchronicity angle is questionable, at best, and as the authors present it, it has about as much credibility as "crystal power," or pick-your-new-age-pabulum. Perhaps my problem is that I was expecting something less fluffy and new-agey.

The book relies heavily on anecdotes to show the power of flow, but they seem--to me--little more than the sort of fortuitous coincidences that we all occasionally experience. Many of the anecdotes illustrate coincidences that are similar, but beyond that similarity apparently meaningless. The authors' suggestion that we can make meaning out of anything we want to is, of course, silly.

I tried some of the exercises, and did not find them particularly effective. Nor did I notice fewer or more synchronicities in my life...coincidences happen, whether I will them to or not.

Some of the sections of this book are so empty of substance that I wonder how they got past an editor. The chapter on divination, for instance--there is nothing there but the broadest imagineable survey of different divination systems like astrology, tarot, I Ching...nothing about how to use them, of course.

Your mileage may vary. If you dig the whole new age angle in your self-improvement books, you might love this.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book Ignore Swizterland.......2005-10-29

I agree with most of these reviews, but not the OneStar Review. He says its written unprofessionally, maybe he doesn't speak English. The book is written in a friendly way, as if someone you've known for a while is sharing something they've found out with you. And on top of that it's a good something. This "flow" is something I wish everyone had. It makes people happier and it adds something magical to your life. The book does a good job explaining this and it includes some good techniques to induce the "flow". When your in the flow you can't help but feel a certain "oh yeah, baby" feeling inside each time something goes right your way. Just one bad review often puts me off of a book with lots of good ones so I wanted to address that ONE for you. Why should you listen to me instead of that dude? That's obvious, Im the Coolest. Or at least me and my mama think so. Hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars Flow to go.......2003-12-10

I have read many books which are directly about or recount examples of synchronicity and this is the one that absolutely resonated with my life experiences. If you cannot figure out why sometimes everything just clicks into place and why sometimes roadblocks show up at every turn AND you are willing to accept responsibility for the way your fears, prejudices, hopes, beliefs, experiences and dreams control the flow of your life, then this is the book for you. This book shows you how to assimilate key principles of self-awareness, self-love, trust, acceptance, gratitude, and responsiblity in very practical ways. If the exercises are done correctly they begin a very intense, honest, and ongoing self-examination of everything you hold dear or fear in this life. If you are ready to take the risk of coming face to face with who you truly are as a person, then buy this book. The benefit is that you become much surer of who you are, clearer on what you want from life and more directed on how you need to accomplish it. This book rates as one of the most valuable books I've ever purchased.
