A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

Book Description
"With compassion for both genders--and a lot of common sense--Audrey Chapman leads the discussion on how black men and women can move from destructive relationships to healthy loving."
--Bebe Moore Campbell
Bestselling author of Brothers and Sisters
"Offers healing prescriptions to help us work through our complex problems and move toward healthier relationships."
--Nathan McCall
Author of Makes Me Want to Holler
While many black men and women enjoy good loving, countless others are trapped in a cycle of bitter emotions and disappointments. As couples therapist Audrey Chapman traveled across the country conducting seminars and workshops on male-female relationships, she was struck by the deep yearning of individuals struggling, often in silence, to find "good loving."
In Getting Good Loving, Chapman examines the psychosocial dynamics in black relationships and explains why unrealistic expectations and confusion about masculine and feminine roles are the two main reasons why black men and women continue to misunderstand one another. Chapman addresses what she calls the "entitlement syndrome"--a subconscious belief that one's romantic partner should make up for one's past suffering. Through case studies and intimate revelations from both men and women, Chapman explains how these root problems surface and how they can be transformed to create healthy, loving, and interdependent relationships.
Here is an honest and sensitive exploration of how to take responsibility for our own happiness and get what we all need--good loving.
"Chapman explores the root causes of common problems between black men and women without using that knowledge as an excuse for destructive behavior. Getting Good Loving offers a positive approach to strengthen and encourage black couples rather than laying blame. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to better understand relationships between black men and women."
--Alvin Poussaint, M.D.
"With sensitivity and wit, [Chapman] suggests ways black men and women can shed their defenses and learn to trust each other again."
--Publishers Weekly

LONG, LONG, LONG OVERDUE!!! BROTHERS AND SISTERS REJOICE!!!.......1999-06-09
Audrey B. Chapman goes where most other authors cannot--into the Black experience--and comes out with advice tailor-made to our experience and culture. Where other books would stress cute lingerie or "communication", this book goes into the heart of where relationships in the Black community go wrong...from the cradle. She takes the time to explore the issues from the Black female/Black male point of view, and offers gentle, compassionate advice that uplifts all and insults none. If you have given up on Black men/Black women and feel as if you have to go it alone or "cross over" to find a good relationship, then this book is for you. It can also help you to repair a worsening relationship by helping to confront the real issues surrounding it. This is easily worth 10 times more than what you may pay for it, and should be THE definitive book for Blacks trying to have a decent, honest, loving union. For yourself, your lover and for the next generation, BUY IT, READ IT AND TREASURE IT!!! You won't be sorry!!!

Offer and prepare the right foods when the woman of his dreams turns into a frightening hungry beast
Woo his wife into bed with romance, good timing, and by getting the housework done
Arranged in a convenient, month-by-month format and broken up by guy-on-the-street quotes, Pregnancy Sucks for Men is the one pregnancy book a man will proudly read for himself.
Customer Reviews:
My husband actually read it!.......2007-08-08
This book was hilarious and the title was funny enough to sucker my husband into reading it. Recommended!
It Takes All Kinds.......2007-07-25
I did review Pregnancy Sucks, and found it a bit humorous. While in the bookstore I had also taken a look through Pregnancy Sucks for Men.
Mind you, in the other review I mentioned that this was one woman's personal story through one pregnancy. This is the flipside, her husband's story. And... well, if my husband had been anyone who needed this kind of advice, my pregnancy would suck as well.
I don't know if the fact that I don't have a Y chromosome (and therefore couldn't "get" the humor) or that I wasn't in a receptive mood... but this really wasn't all that funny. Husband must humor the pregnant wife, husband must be given a clue about what all is going on, husband must smile and nod at his wife's antics. Give me a break, wasn't this stuff covered in the old Honeymooner's episodes? How many years ago?
I know my husband would be offended by this book. But hey-- there are tons of people out there who may enjoy what really turned me off, and if they learn something out of it, then bully for them. While I did enjoy Joanne's book, Jeff's was left at the bookstore. My advice is to actually take a peek inside and decide if its humor is for you.
this book is awesome.......2007-05-06
I was my first child when given this book as a gift. It is the perfect book for a guy who has a hard time reading the same books your wife is reading (what to expect, girlfriends guide) because those were all written for the female. This book speaks in guy terms and is a humorous (yet accurate) approach towards dealing with pregnancy. I have passed on my copy to other friends and have purchased many copies for friends who are expecting babies. This is a great read!
Ummm...yeah. .......2007-04-20
"Your wife might take a dump on the delivery table"...is just one of the great sentences in this horrible book. Oh yeah...and if the doctor cuts her, don't worry, this book tells her just to get a "happy husband stitch". Nevermind that lovemaking will be incredibly painful for her....!! Oh, unless you have a c-section, in which case it will just be your hormones to deal with.
What a terrible book.
Great Therapy.......2006-12-28
When my wife was enduring some very un-funny complications (near tragic), this very funny (and informative) book was the emotional medicine I needed in staying the course as the rock of support. Until I read this, it was very difficult to find reason to laugh.

A uniquely Christian perspective for breast cancer patients, survivors and their loved ones.
Customer Reviews:
Hope and Humor.......2005-04-11
Reading this book it is hard to feel too glum although breast cancer is it's subject. For women who have been through some of what the author has experienced, whether the medical ups and downs or the personal struggle with faith and hope, this book provides empathy and sustenance. With humor, intelligence and relevant information, Ms. Baker gives women a peek into the experiences so many of us will go through and survive, perhaps even thrive. You just have to read her tale of what she heard while waiting for surgery! One of those things we all can laugh at only after the fact; to be able to laugh, love, and believe is the theme of this great little book.
Medically helpful, Humorous, Witty.......2004-11-16
Impressive doctors' sections including the renowned Chris Wright, PhD of Cambridge University discussing his research on Tamoxifen; Doctors N. Joseph Haroun, fellowship in endocrinology from Hopkins and Melita Braganza, researcher at University of Maryland discussing chemotherapy and radiation therapy. For me, these are the highlights of the book. For my wife, they were the poetry, illustrations, and the myriad of helpful suggestions and insights into things people don't usually discuss.
Author's Excerpt.......2004-11-04
"If you are a breast cancer patient, you need no introduction to me, because you know me well already. I'm just like you...You and I have in common the unsettling feeling of our worlds shaken up, our schedules not in our own control, and the keen awareness of our own human vulnerability. When cancer strikes, it puts us all on even ground. Rich or poor, pretty or plain, waitress or CEO, it makes no difference. There is no escape route and the only special treatment we'll get is what's sent from heaven."
Excellent book that is very helpful!.......2004-10-25
With this book, Sylvia Baker wrote one of the best books on the subject of breast cancer. It takes away the fear from surgery for those women who need to go through the process and this book offers lots of hope for the recover process. Baker herself is a breast cancer survivor and has gone through the whole ordeal. She wrote the book from the heart with the purpose of edifying and encouraging the reader, while being objective regarding the issue.
The author approaches the subject systematically, but always with the concern of the individual patient in mind. This book is highly recommended for everyone who was just been diagnosed with breast cancer or who is already in the recovery stage, and it's also a great and encouraging read for loved ones of breast cancer victims as it is a very helpful book -- one of the best books on the subject out there. Because of the excellent content, this book is just simply an encouraging read for everyone.
Great Resource .......2004-10-20
Sylvia (my precious little sister!) shares her personal story in a humorous manner, emphasizing the importance of keeping a good attitude and your eyes on God. She's included lots of good medical information about the various treatment options, written by health professionals, which will help you understand the medical side of the story. This book is easy to read and can even be used as a devotional, read a chapter at a time. She's included poetry, recipes, and tips for helping those you love in times of crisis. Go ahead - Buy the book! Love ya, Syl!
Book Description
In this wickedly funny, irreverent tribute to mythological bad girl goddesses from around the world, Trina Robbins tells 20 nasty, bitchy, utterly enjoyable tales. Her goddesses sleep with dwarves, slip drugs into drinks, have catfights with their sisters, kill, get even, and generally raise hell. Readers meet Innanna, the Sumerian goddess who plies the god of wisdom with beer so she can steal his powers; Norse goddess Freya, the original Snow White, who is after a diamond necklace; and Lilith, created by God to be Adam's equal, but hungry for more.
Customer Reviews:
Deliciously irreverant.......2006-11-26
This book is a must-read for all feminists, Goddess-worshippers, and those interested in mythology and ancient history! It's an incredibly hilarious read, with a healthy tongue-in-cheek tone, an often-irreverant style, and fresh contemporary language. Far from espousing and propagating myths about goddesses being, as Ms. Robbins puts it, "the Virgin Mary with crystals," she really brings them to life in all of their not-so-nice glory. These goddesses are empowered women who aren't afraid to do things that many people falsely assume exist only in the domain of the male deities. She divides the book up into sections, giving us stories with themes such as "G.I. Janes," "Bad Girls of the Bible," "Goddesses Who Love Too Much," and "Tramps and Thieves." The goddesses come from a wide variety of cultures, such as Native American, Hawaiian, Scandinavian, Japanese, Indian, and Greek, and they vary in the nature of their badness. For example, some goddesses merely loved the wrong man, or were warriors, or created magick potions, while others did maleficent things such as killing and eating innocent people or drowning an entire city. There are tales such as Osmotar, the Finnish goddess who invented beer, Freya, the Norse goddess who slept with a pack of dwarves to get a beautiful diamond necklace, Inanna, the Sumerian goddess who got her grandfather drunk to get all of his powers, secrets, and servants, Lilith, the woman who according to legend was created before Eve and whose only "crime" was that she was assertive and didn't want to be some meek little submissive housewife to Adam, and Pele, the Hawaiian goddess who killed her favorite sister because she caught her kissing the husband she had, unbeknownest to Pele, brought back to life just for her. I also loved that there was a chapter on Jezebel, since all of the secular research does bear out that she was not the evil woman depicted in the Bible.
Some people, such as historical purists and serious scholars, might not like the contemporary language and anachronisms, but that's part of the fun quality of this book. It's not meant to be a scholarly treatise on goddesses. As Ms. Robbins points out, a lot has been lost in the move to make goddesses seem all nice and sweet, these loving earth mothers who go around casting positive spells and blessing drum circles. It might have been done to make Goddess-worship seem less threatening to outsiders, but it really robbed these women of their personalities and uniqueness. The only downside for me was that I wished there had been a pronunciation guide somewhere, primarily for the Celtic and Hawaiian names.
A New Spin On Women.......2005-07-22
Trina Roberts book is enlightening in many perspectives. It puts the femenist spin on countless stories, my favorites being that of Lilith and Jezebel. The idea of the book is wonderful, to show that Goddess' are not all the happy, helpful, home and hearth, mother types society makes them out to be. It displays the stories in simple and easy to read ways that are amusing and pleasurable. However, the fact that she mixes the literary ability of a twelve year old and sexual themes could cause some controversy. My only possible complaint on this magnificent piece of work is that the vocabulary of many of the Goddess' she portrays as clever and vindictive are rather pathetic. They say such things as, "You are so hot, lets have sex."
Though the vocabulary can be amusing, after awhile it gets irritating.
Overall this book is, as I said, magnificent. The idea of it is absolutely amazing and the spin on the legends never ceases to bring laughter. This is a book for teenage girls of today to read and find a more simplistic and hilarious spin on their favorite myths and legends.
Bad Goddesses,Good Book!.......2005-01-25
This book covers different mythological goddesses and their stories,as well as women in religion claiming that title,
such as Jezebel, who were bad goddesses and not your ever
faithful and loving type.
This book is well written, well told , interesting and fun.
Trina Robbins is a "sharpshooter" of mythological knowledge
and intelligence.
Take A Walk on the Lighter Side!.......2005-01-16
While I'm a technical writer, I'm not a technical reader. I never read a text in college unless the professor took the exam directly from it. If Trina had written my textbooks, I may have read them! Trina Robbins presents solid mythology in an entertaining, humorous way. I laughed my way through the book and also found the little blocks of history dispersed throughout informative. My favorite story is that of Kali and Shiva's reaction to her aggressive dance. Eternally Bad is a must-have for any Goddess library.
Goddesses behaving badly.......2004-02-10
This book is a refreshing antidote to the rather soppily sentimental view of all goddesses as kind, nurturing mother figures. Here you will find stories of goddesses being cruel, vengeful, lustful, greedy and cunning, and enjoying themselves thoroughly. Trina Robbins tells their stories in a brisk, breezy style, and the book is delightfully illustrated. Great fun.

Not everyone--not even every feminist--holds to the belief that age brings wisdom, power, and its own beauty. Faced with turning 50, Letty Cottin Pogrebin, founder of Ms. and author of several books including Growing Up Free, says her reactions ranged "from astonishment to anger, from confusion to curiosity, from denial to disgust." Using herself as a compass and adding many other well- known voices, Pogrebin's irreverent book takes on friendship, sex, love, dieting, mothering adults, the physical and emotional depredations of aging, and mortality. Rather than stubbornly toeing the line on spurning plastic surgery, for example, she thoughtfully explores "the tension between artificiality and authenticity." In the end, she concludes, one can devote one's remaining years to lamenting and running after lost youth or put that time to far better uses. Despite a glib, overly playful tone that trivializes certain issues, Pogrebin's desire to share downplayed truths is a boon.

I laughed till I cried.......2000-05-19
This book was like talking with a close friend. I thank Letty for being honest, sensitive and very funny. If you are 50 it's a must read...I bought 6 copies to give to friends!
Superficial.......2000-01-26
Maybe I didn't enjoy this so much because I am only 45 and, therefore, a good 15 years younger than the author. That makes us of different generations making her personal anecdotes difficult to relate to. In addition, I don't have a great career, I'm not married, I don't live in a large metropolitan & cosmopolitan area, I don't have a group of fabulous girlfriends to drink wine and compare stories with, and I don't have kids (and likely never will) so again, I found a lot to not bond about with the author.
The opening chapter, however, was wonderful and had me howling in my chair. I hoped that fun would be maintained throughout the book. Instead, I felt the book spent too much time talking about superficial aspects of aging like eating right, exercising, and keeping your mind alert by trying new things (well, duh!). She also completely overlooks the more spiritual aspects of mortality in favor of political discussions about women in society (important but not what I'm needing right now). There was a rather graphic description of a breast bioposy which was riveting (the author holds nothing back there and thank you for that) Maybe in another five years I'll connect better instead of finding this to read very much like an irritating upbeat "how-to-be a glowing senior citizen article" out of Good Housekeeping Magazine. For now, I'd recommend Awakening at Midlife by Kathleen Brehony.
Funny, poignant, reassuring--all at the same time!.......1997-08-05
A must-read for those 49 1/2 and--sorry--older.
My sister (55) recommended it to me (52) after I noticed that some men I had dated were starting to die in their 50's. I landed on Pogrebin's
reassuring comment that death isn't a factor of
aging but a factor of life with relief and
recognition. She approaches the good, the bad,
and the ugly (and what her grownup daughters label
even as disgusting) with humor and the sense
of sisterhood and community that are her hallmark.

Customer Reviews:
LOVE THIS BOOK!.......1998-09-17
The only thing I have a problem with is that "Steppin' Out With Attitude" wasn't available 10 years ago, before I wasted all that time on trial and error trying to figure out what to do with myself -- and my attitude! The author identifies some of our greatest oppressors and shows effective ways of combating them, shares testimonials by women who've overcome tremendous obstacles (I was really inspired by the one about Adrienne Shabazz on pages 30-31!!), and provides step-by-step guidance on how to achieve the success you deserve with fun and rather enlightening worksheets and "attitude adjustment" techniques. So many sisters are dissatisfied with their lives, yet don't know what to do about it. This book breaks it down WITH ATTITUDE and style in simple, straightforward, easy-to-understand-and-apply language. I highly recommend this book, particularly to sisters with that nagging feeling that there's something you should be doing instead of "settling" for less than what you want.

Lou Dunn Diekemper wanted to know how elder women feel about themselves in a youth-oriented culture. She wanted to know their views about aging, death, loss, life's enriching experiences, and their feelings about the importance of their lives.
So she embarked upon asking such questions of women across the United States. Now she presents the results of her study in a very clear, upbeat, and beautifully evocative outline of the role of the elder woman in American society and includes the results of her interviews and surveys of over 250 women, ages 55 and older, regarding their health, outlook, attitudes, beliefs, accomplishments, self-esteem, and self-views.
"Women Who Take Care" emphasizes the increasing possibilities that are open to elder women, explores the critical issues facing aging women and their self-view in terms of body, mind, and spirit, and encourages women to make active and creative choices for their lives as they come "of age."
Book Description
The public discussion of sexuality in America first came about in the 1820s.nbsp; Predictably, Americans diverged considerably on how to approach the controversial topic.nbsp;Folk wisdom, current scientific beliefs, and the teachings of evangelical Christianity all shaped the antebellum conversation about the moral, social and physical implications of sex.nbsp; In her introduction, Professor Horowitz takes American sexual history beyond the boundaries of the twentieth century and elucidates the complex issues surrounding nineteenth-century debates and dialogue.nbsp;Helpful headnotes contextualize this colorful selection of hard-to-find documents, which includes medical articles, religious pamphlets, advertisements and propaganda, and popular literature. Contemporary illustrations, a chronology, and a bibliography foster students' understanding of antebellum sexual knowledge.
