Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars The Conclusion to the Chain of Memories Series.......2007-03-29

Yes, you read the title right, for those of you who are just starting to read or are going to buy this book, rest assured that this is the end of the Chain of Memories saga. In the back of the book, it mentions that the next series Kingdom Hearts II will be out in stores soon, so I'm sure all of us KH fans are ready to see that series. Anyway, onto my review.

Volume 2 carries on the story from the first book. Sora, Donald, and Goofy are on a quest through Castle Oblivion to find their friends Riku and King Mickey. Sora finally remembers a little bit about the mysterious girl called Namine and is frantically searching the castle for her, however, it seems that Donald and Goofy (well Donald mainly) are getting irritated at Sora because all he talks about is Namine. While Sora and his friends are searching the castle, unbeknownst to them Riku is in Castle Oblivion on his own quest, not just a quest to find his friends, but to finally be rid of the darkness that resides in his heart.

Meanwhile, as the two "groups" conduct their search, it becomes more and more apparent that Organization XIII has their own agendas with two separate factions battling it out between each other.

That's the end of my summary, I feel that anymore might ruin some of the fun and surprise. This manga is a good conclusion, I've never played the Chain of Memories game so I'm not sure how closely this Manga follows the game, so forgive me of any ignorance. This manga is pretty much the same size as the first book, so there's plenty of story with only a couple of pages of "Bonus Comics" at the back which is awesome because sometimes the extra cartoons are a little lame. Beware that there isn't as much comedy as in the first book, this tends to lean more towards the seriousness of the group's quests though there is still a little comedy here and there which helps break the serious mood at just the right times. So get this book, finish out the series, and wait anxiously for the release of Volume 1 of Kingdom Hearts II.

***Note, something I noticed while reading the book, page 140 is actually labeled as 104, but the rest of the page numbers are correct. Just a little mistake that I saw, really thought there was a lot more pages to the book than I thought.

Ron McLarty has joined the ranks of writers of the quirky hero with The Memory of Running. His hero, Smithy Ide, is in the grand tradition of Ignatius J. Reilly of A Confederacy of Dunces and Quoyle of The Shipping News. What these gentlemen have in common is their lumpen-loser looks, their outsider status and their general befuddlement about the way the world works and their place in it. Smithy rises above them because of his self-effacing nature, his great capacity for love, his inability to show it and his endless willingness to forgive.

Smithy is a 279-pound, hard-drinking, chain-smoking, 43-year-old misfit who works in a G.I. Joe factory putting arms and legs on the action heroes. (How did McLarty come up with that?) He is also the most beguiling anti-hero to come into view in a long, long time. McLarty, an award-winning actor and playwright best known for his many appearances on TV in Law & Order, Sex and the City, The Practice, and Judging Amy, has added another star to his creative crown with this novel.

The first sentence of the book is: "My parents' Ford station wagon hit a concrete divider on U.S. 95 outside Biddeford, Maine, in August 1990." This tragic accident eventually claims both their lives. It is on the day of their funeral that Smithy finds a letter to his father about Bethany, his beloved and deeply troubled sister, stating that, "Bethany Ide, 51, died from complications of exposure... and she has since that time been in the Los Angeles Morgue West." Beautiful Bethany, given to taking off her clothes in public places, holding impossible poses for long periods of time, responding to voices that only she can hear, and disappearing for no known reason. This time, she has been gone for many years and now Smithy knows that she died destitute and alone. When he reads the letter, he is drunk, grief-stricken and, despite a house full of people, he is alone. He goes out to the garage to smoke and have another drink and spies his old Raleigh bicycle. He sits on it, flat tires and all, wheels it to the end of the driveway--and--Smithy doesn't know it yet, but he is going to ride a bicycle from Maine to Los Angeles to claim his sister's remains.

On the road he meets the good, the bad, and the really bad. He frequently calls Norma, the Ides' across-the-street neighbor, confined to a wheelchair for years, and always in love with him. He has never acknowledged nor returned her ardor, but he starts to count on her friendship during his travels. Their conversations are sweet and revelatory. McLarty has done a superb job of showing us who Smithy is and who he is becoming. It's a wonderful story told with great poignancy and humor. --Valerie Ryan

Book Description

Every decade seems to produce a novel that captures the public's imagination with a story that sweeps readers up and takes them on a thrilling, unforgettable ride. Ron McLarty's The Memory of Running is this decade's novel. By all accounts, especially his own, Smithson “Smithy” Ide is a loser. An overweight, friendless, chain-smoking, forty-three-year-old drunk, Smithy's life becomes completely unhinged when he loses his parents and long-lost sister within the span of one week. Rolling down the driveway of his parents' house in Rhode Island on his old Raleigh bicycle to escape his grief, the emotionally bereft Smithy embarks on an epic, hilarious, luminous, and extraordinary journey of discovery and redemption.

“Smithy is an American original, worthy of a place on the shelf just below your Hucks, your Holdens, your Yossarians.” —Stephen King

“Endearing . . . it's a ride worth taking.” —USA Today

“In The Memory of Running, professional actor and long aspiring novelist Ron McLarty has invented a character so fully and elegantly defined that the book soars with originality and life.” —San Francisco Chronicle

“Captivating . . . McLarty unspools passage after passage of devastating grace and melancholy, and his taciturn hero hooks himself to your heart.” —Entertainment Weekly

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent characters!.......2007-05-25

I love books that are chock full of rich characters. Books from authors like John Irving, Barbara Kingsolver, etc. This is one of those books! Smithy Ide, his sister Bethany, her uncle Count and others will burn themselves into your memory. It was hard putting this book down and I was disappointed to be through with it. Highly recommended!!!

2 out of 5 stars Contrived and pathetic .......2007-05-16

Smithy Ide is a dismal, twisted, overgrown adolescent whose ability to tell his own story is limited and irritating. If this were an actual memoir, an editor would have removed the many sentences ending with the phrase "and stuff", and also would have restricted the number of panting references to women's breasts. But this is a novel, written with the vocabulary and insight of a stupid, self-loathing buffoon whom the author no doubt thought would become another Ignatius J. Reilly. He does not come close.

The book's secondary character, disappearing sister Bethany (a name which doesn't even register on the name popularity charts for the year she was supposed to be born), is one of the worst representations of mentally ill women in fiction, and the manners in which community, family and medical team attempt to deal with her behaviors are totally unrealistic. Even if we were being subjected to her adoring brother's faulty memories of the events, this would be forgivable, but to conclude that is to necessarily scrap the entire rest of the narrative.

Which I recommend. I'm stunned that so many people -- and others I've spoken to -- think this is a great, important novel, and that McLarty is a talented writer. But then I remember how many people voted for George W. Bush. Twice!

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2007-05-15

To be fair, I haven't finished this novel. It's not as if I have no free time, I do-- I just couldn't stay interested in the characters at all. Chapters here and there are well-written and drew me in, but the overall "quest" of the main character is boring and cliched, and there is nothing in the novel to make me like him. Right now I have no real reason to want to finish the book, other than to fill up moments of sheer boredom.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Coming of Age Story--Wonderful!.......2007-05-05

Ron McLarty's "The Memory of Running" is a must read. It keeps going back to this extremely over-weight man's childhood. At age 45, the man never married, and then his parents are killed in a car crash. A week later, he finds out that his only sibling, a sister, has died homeless in Los Angeles. The man then takes off on his bicycle to ride from New York to Los Angeles. He gives up drinking and smoking and starts eating right. It's a real page turner.
There's also his memory of a girl in a wheelchair who loves him.
You'll love this story!

Also excellent is "The Traveler," by McLarty. Click here: Traveler

5 out of 5 stars A stunning prize of a novel.......2007-02-26

This novel was so well written and the plot so compelling that I couldn't put it down. I was so struck by the fact that I, an avid reader, wasn't even familiar with Ron McLarty, the author. I cannot praise this book highly enough. It is a wondrous journey of redemption for a character who didn't even require redemption, except from his own shame. A great book!

5 out of 5 stars Confuzzled No More!.......2007-08-01

To all Kingdom Heart fans, if you have not bought the Chain of Memories game, DON'T! I began playing the game before reading the book and I have to say that the book is better than the game by a long shot.

Lots of games have turned themselves into card RPG's and they basically suck (Metal Gear Solid, Street Fighter, etc). Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories is one of those games. But the book series, however, has a better storyline to help carry-on the KH world and is less confusing than the game because when you continuously battle you loose the story and get confuzzled!. So if you are not into videogames or you just don't like the card-style gaming that KHCM gives you, then pick-up the book and be confused no more!!! Trust me it's better to spend $10 on the book than $5 on a used copy of the game!

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories Vol. 1 gets 5 stars out of 5.

My name is Amone. Adios!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful series That Keeps Good Merit.......2007-06-09

The "Chain of Memories" series is only two volumes, but they probably make up the dissappointing, short volumes of the "Kingdom Hearts I" manga. Not only is this book a little more fleshed out, it dives deeper into the game, and doesn't exactly feel like a rush job.

The plot sounds simple. Sora, Donald, and Goofy must find Rikku and the King, who are still trapped on the other side of the World of Darkness. To do that, they must step into a castle overruled by several manipulative Members of the Organization XIII. Problem is, once they step in, they loose their memories, replaced by false ones put there by a meek girl named Namine, someone who faintly appeared in Sora's life, but by her personality, wasn't really noticed. It's a nice manga that really dives deep into Namine's thougts and feelings, and how the rebellous Axel of the Organization tries his best to keep both Sora and Namine out of harm's way.

Trust me, this manga is well worth your money, although it's labeled for All Ages, you won't see much violence. But why should there be? The humor, deep story, and funny character expressions really do this manga justice.

5 out of 5 stars The Beginning of a Great Kingdom Hearts Sequel.......2007-03-21

If you've just played the Kingdom Hearts games on the Playstation console, then you probably have no idea what this manga is about. Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories connects the ending of the the first Kingdom Hearts game with the beginning events in the second Kingdom Hearts game.

Now that the door has been closed (the end of the first game) Sora and his friends continue to hunt for those that they have lost. While wandering a countryside, Sora is met by a mysterious person dressed all in black. After a bit of a confrontation, the stranger tells Sora to go to Castle Oblivion, that is where he will be able to find his answers. When the gang gets to the castle, they are again confronted by another stranger (or maybe it's the same, it's hard to tell), but essentially the gang learns a little bit about the castle. As the gang travels through the castle they begin to lose memories of their times in the first game and of their friends. With the help of special "Memory Cards" the gang travels from world to world trying to find their friends, but even the friends they made in each world don't seem to be able to remember Sora, Donald, and Goofy.

Essentially that's the premise of the story, in the first book, the gang travels to Traverse Town to meet the gang from the Final Fantasy World, and they even travel to Agrabah to meet up with Aladdin and Genie.

This series does show more promise than the last set of books (though I loved the first series, they were a wee bit on the thin side for a good Manga). There's plenty of comedy, lots of action, and some great adventures, this first book even has it's own little cliffhanger ending. I just hope that this time they travel to Halloween Town, that's the one thing I wished that they would've done in the first series. Anyway, it's a great read, go out and buy it if your a KH fan or even if you're a noobie to the franchise and thinks it looks like a cute read.

5 out of 5 stars KH:CoM...a funny and amusing read........2007-03-08

I must agree with the person that admitted that he was a bit disappointed with the first series' books. I was as well and so was my brother, both of us having played Kingdom Hearts all the way through more than once and knowing all the events. It was way too short and exciting things were cut from the manga. However, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories stays true to the game (from what I remember, anyway) and still makes it a fascinating read. It continues the story of Sora - the child given the awesome responsibility of wielding the legendary "Keyblade," an awesome weapon that can wrought both destruction and salvation. I have always like this series, and have played all three games. I can't wait for Kingdom Hearts 2 to be turned into a manga. I hope it will just keep getting better! Oh, and, as a correction, this book's cover is not on backwards by mistake. They decided to stick with the true manga style, which is written right to left, instead of left to right like we're used to in the States. I just wanted to clear that up with the woman that gave this a one-star. Sorry if I offend anyone, but this series deserves a bit more than that.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-02-20

Although the book itself was in excellent condition, the cover of the book was on backwards. Since I bought this to give to a child as a gift. I was disappointed when he pointed out that the cover was on backwards.

A few days later her mother disappears, and a woman who calls herself Kira's aunt Memory takes Kira to Crythe, a country that doesn't officially exist, in order to rescue her -- or so she says.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting concepts get lost in outlandish plot.......2007-09-08

The basic plot has the same roots as Harry Potter. I think most young people would like to belive that they are extaordinarily talented orphaned offspring who will be discovered for the truly special people they are. The plot moves along swiftly. The book does have some interesting things to say about memories and what they contribute to who we are and whether the brain should be used for recall vs reason. There is plenty of action, but the story takes outlandish jumps that require the reader to not just suspend his disbelief, but send it on an extended vacation. I was uncomfortable with the frequent threat of gun violence. It seemed a convenient way to put the good guys in peril that seemed oddly old fashioned in this modern concept novel. One scene where a pistol is discharged in a dungeon was ludicrous. I believe her strongest writing depicted the teenage girls just being girls at the start. There is an opening for a sequel at the end, but I won't be around for that.

5 out of 5 stars really cool book.......2007-04-12

this book kept me on the edge of my seat and the story was really interesting
if you're looking for a great adventure book or are just a diehard haddix fan, this is the book for you

5 out of 5 stars different and pleasing.......2007-01-07

I must say, in all my life, I have never read a book at all like this. This book is very good, but a little hard to follow. I think it should be intended for a higher reading level. Margaret Peterson Haddix is a very complicated individual, I can tell. A lot of her stories are harder to grasp to a person of a younger mind set. I have always thoroughly enjoyed her books and am looking forward to her next one.

5 out of 5 stars A Book to Remember.......2006-06-06

I just read Escape from Memory by Margaret Peterson Haddix and it was great. I already love her books and I've read 1 of her shadow children series books. Once you start reading this book you wont want to put it down. Every page has a new twist and the suspense just kills you. It's like holding a puppy from the shelter; you never want to put it down. I'm not saying this is the only good book she has she might have more that you might like better. I like when books have a few characters and don't switch of between like four different characters. My favorite part is when she finds her mom but her Aunt Memory (Rona) closes the door behind them and she finds her mom who is really her aunt memory. That's when she tells Kira about the past of Cyrthe. You should really read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for 6th grade+.......2006-05-02

This has been one of my all-time favorite books ever since I read it last year. The plot, though confusing, has just the right amount of twists and turns to keep you interested.

One thing I especially enjoyed was the fact that no one was pure good or pure evil, and very few people end up with the same character Kira percieves them with in the beginning. An example is Aunt Memory. At the beginning of the book, she is percieved by Kira as strange but welcome. A little while later, Kira begins to have second thoughts. Then, she thinks of her as kind, then evil, then, surprisingly, with a hint of sympathy.

This is an overall very good book which I would recommend to anyone 6th grade and up looking for a great book you can really get lost in.

Book Description

Dr. Cherijo Torin is not herself. With no memory of her past-or even of the man she loved-she sees herself as a different person and has no desire to remember who she once was. But Cherijo must remember if she's to develop a cure for the Hsktskt plague before their race becomes extinct.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars good sci-fi series.......2007-07-04

This is the best book of the series, in last book Cherijo's memory is gone, so now she wants to be called Jarn, the only memories she has is as Jarn. In this book she is not mean to Duncan, she comes to love him and is a better wife than Cherijo was, it's about time poor Duncan gets treated right. She does not get tortured, beaten, burned, etc, which is a big plus, that was getting kinda old. Also, she doesn't spend all her time being the genius doctor.

5 out of 5 stars great comeback.......2007-05-25

I've read the entire series, was disappointed in Rebel Ice but this book makes up for it. This is my favorite one of the series. Cherijo, now called Jarn does'nt spend all her time and energy being a doctor, she does'nt get tortured again and again through out the book and finally Duncan has a real wife who loves him as much as he loves her and she is not mean and hateful to her husband now. Her new personality is a great improvement.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2007-04-24

I have to explain the depth of my disappointment -- I HATE reading first person novels. Even so, I read the first Stardoc and was hooked. Viehl's Stardoc novels are the only first person books I have completed and I surprised myself by buying more in the series. So you can imagine how disappointed I am to see that Jarn lives on. While I enjoyed the third person format of Rebel Ice, I did not like the characters (Reever is always the exception). Jarn especially is as obnoxious as other reviewers have painted her -- vicious, stubborn, subservient, stupid, cold, unemotional, and withdrawn. Cherijo was obnoxious as well -- stubborn, know-it-all, selfish, and holier-than-thou. But at least with Cherijo, there was some evidence that she could grow as a character. The only growth with Jarn is when she regains some of Cherijo's memories. The love scenes between Reever and Jarn are mechanical and cold -- there is simply no emotion in that character and her "love" for her daughter doesn't seem to be anything more than her duty as a mother. A plea to the author -- kill off Jarn and bring Cherijo back. Please, or I may have to say goodbye to the series.

2 out of 5 stars Overwhelming Disappointment with a Glimmer of Hope.......2007-04-05

I was very disappointed in this book. Unlike many others, I gave its predecessor - Rebel Ice - a decent review. I felt the story was a good one. I considered it a set-up for major character development of Cherijo Grey Veil. I was looking forward to its sequel and the re-establishment of the original character, with all the dramatic shenanigans that would entail.

Imagine my bafflement - and my rising frustration - to realize this novel was more about establishing the new character of Jarn instead of the slow re-emergence of Cherijo.

Jarn is an obvious set up to foil Cherijo Grey Veil in every possible way. She's unemotional, rigid, simple, cold, predatorial and considers herself to be inferior to the male gender.

In short, if you liked the character of Cherijo Grey Veil - which if you've stuck by the series this far, you obviously do - then everything about this character should set your teeth on edge. And it does. She has exactly zero percent of the sympathy, guts, humor, intelligence and dedication of her predecessor. And she is exactly that much fun to read about.

It is horribly disheartening, therefore, to see her dogged insistence that she is NOT Cherijo Grey Veil begin to take root. The author is writing this story as if this character is here to stay. By degrees, the people around her are forced to acknowledge that Cherijo is no more; to call this new person "Jarn" and to begin to regard her completely differently.

Most disturbing of all is the re-establishment of the relationship with Duncan Reever. The man has always been portrayed as psychologically damaged, part of which manifests as an unhealty attachament to his wife. Prior to this book, that obsession has been kept in check; criss-crossing the line between romantic possessiveness and disturbing attention. Given free rein, Duncan Reever declares himself loved and in love, at last and fully, with Jarn - no longer Cherijo. Jarn herself declares herself full willing to discard other commitments and devote herself to him.

Does this or does this not make the fans of Cherijo Grey Veil just WINCE?

It is truly horrible, on every level; to see this new character supplant the old in such a way; to see Duncan Reever fall in love with what is repeatedly hammered home is a different person; to see such a horrible personality replace the old; subservient to men, overpowering in maternal instincts, weak in the medical field and uninterested in devotion to her craft.

I will also say that I have noticed, in subsequent novels by the same author, several distressing tendencies that this novel furthers: 1)to make the lead male character a very controlling, obsessive lover to the female lead, 2) make the lead female character subservient in some way to them and 3)make them all all the same! If you read Blade Dancer and BioRescue, they are essentially Cherijo Grey Veil and Duncan Reever in different circumstances.

Whatever plot was left over in the wake of this, I barely registered. But it was very soap-operatic; the clone of an old lover, the reunion with old enemies and the threat of a plaque.

The plot is certainly not what drove this series. It was the characters. So with the old character apparently on the outs and this new distressing doppelganger taking her place, I can't see myself maintaing much more interest.

I will concede, however, among my overwhelming disappointment, there was a bright spot. With the use of a predicatable plot device, some memories of Cherijo Grey Veil did surface, along with some tiny bits of old habits.

So perhaps there is hope.

4 out of 5 stars An exciting futuristic fantasy - can be read in isolation.......2007-03-27

"Plague of Memory" is a fascinating book with a very interesting premise. The main character, J- is a doctor who has lost memories of the person she once was, C-. J- is living on a space ship, with C-'s husband, daughter, family and friends. They all admired and respected C-, but J- soon discovers that she does not. There is also an action packed plot full of an alien plague, slavers, and a few of C-'s old enemies.

This book stands on its own two feet; you need not have read Viehl's previous novels to enjoy it. For myself, I enjoyed Stardoc (Stardoc #1) greatly, but quickly lost interest with the sequels. C- was basically a selfish person: a lousy wife, an indifferent mother, and a work-o-holic. J- is an entirely different person, generous, loving, and willing to fight to protect those she loves. What makes this novel are the interactions as J- fights to be accepted for whom she is right now. Also, her husband, D-, is finally treated to the attention he has long deserved as an interesting character in his own right. My only problem with this book was the abundance of overly complicated references to past events.

If you enjoy this novel, I suggest you also consider Blood Bound (Mercy Thompson Series, Book 2) and Forged Without Fire: A Champion for Catlover. Though their SF/F settings are quire different, the gestalt mood is similar -- strong female leads who aren't self centered.

This was a great book. I wish Amazon had more pages in the books that you can view online, because I would have purchased this the first time I saw it if I had known how great it was. It has lots of nostalgic looking pages and lots of pages for photos which I didn't know by looking at the book online.

I'm also getting one for us because the grandparents have advised starting one now because it's hard to remember at their age.

Miles turns 30, and--though he isn't slowing down just yet--he is starting to lose interest in the game of Wall: the one where he tries to climb the wall, fails, gets up, and tries again. Having finally reached a point in his life where he can look back and realize that he has managed to prove his courage and competence, he can move on to bigger and better things.

Depending on how you count it, this is the eighth, ninth, tenth, or eleventh book in a series--not all are about Miles or even his extended family. A good place to start is with the first Vorkosigan story, Shards of Honor.

4 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Having been dead is bad, it can seriously crimp your stylin's.

Especially when the boss finds out. The head of Imperial Security finds out Miles is really not a well bloke, and gives him the boot from his current assignment.

This is seen as an opportunity for some that don't like the current boss to try and get rid of him.

The first bit backfires on those that have targeted the head of Security as Miles finds an old law that lets the Emperor appoint a troubleshooter who can basically order whoever th ehell he likes around. He gets a surprise when said Emperor makes it him. This sort of troublemaking certainly suits him as he does the business.

5 out of 5 stars Another Hit For Miles.......2006-06-07

After the superlative "Mirror dance", "Memory" was almost bound to light up a little, but happily, it didn't :)

Miles has returned to active duty, working as Admiral Naismith, the ImpSec identity - but his crio-revival wasn't so succesful as formerly believed, and he bungles a mission... Illyan finds out about it - and about the lies in the report Miles presented - and gives our Lord Vorkosigan the boot. Unemployed, depressed - almost suicidal -, and going 30, Miles has to turn to other horizons for his hyper-active personality.
The only thing is, there is no need for his special talents, and the salvation, when it comes, is actually a huge problem: Illyan's eidetic chip has been sabotaged and Miles' former chief is about to lose his mind or die... So Gregor gives Miles the prop he needs - the Imperial Auditor rank - to solve the problem, and he does solve it, Miles-like: quick, neat, completely.

The story is action-packed, the characters well-developed, the rhythm flows...

A superb writing, another extraordinary Vorkosigan adventure!!
Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars It's Those BIG Bumps in Life That Define Your Character. [Not the best / Still great].......2006-02-24

If you've never read a Miles Vorkosigan novel before then DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! ... At least not yet. It's good, but you would enjoy it so much better if you've read all of the others first. I'll post a list at the end of this review.

Memories is a turning point for Miles. Miles makes a huge mistake, falsifying a report to ImpSec. It results in his being discharged from ImpSec and effectively losing the Dendarii Mercenaries and the persona of Admiral Miles Naismith. This is worse then death [he's already died once in the last novel, Mirror Dance]. Miles is devastated, and goes into a major decline. Catatonia, Alcohol, Withdrawal, the whole bit.

His cousin, Ivan, manages to pull him out of his slump, and here the novel gets a little slow. Consider though, that many people become their best when they have been shaken to their roots from their status quo. It's worth reading through this slow part. Miles starts trying to find things to do with his time, restaffing the Vorkorsigan home, exploring the far flung holdings, [trying to befriend the security guard's cat].

It's not long before acquaintances contact him about strange behavior by his former superior and good friend at ImpSec. Illyan seems to be having flashbacks, and forgetting things. Since Illyan has a memory chip implanted in his brain, this seems highly unusual. Miles throws himself into investigating what's wrong, but first has to find a way to get the access to even be able to investigate.

As I said, "Memories" is a turning point for Miles, one that will set the course of his life, and the make up of ImpSec, and the home world of Barrayar for years to come.

And here is that list in order:
Shards of Honor
Barrayar {Hugo Winner}
The Warriors Apprentice
The Vor Game {Hugo Winner}
Cetaganda
Brothers in Arms
Borders of Infinity
Mirror Dance {Hugo Winner}
-Memory- {This Review}
Komarr
A Civil Campaign
Diplomatic Immunity

If you choose to pursue these stories then you're going to have many hours of good reading.

5 out of 5 stars Loss of Memory and Dreams.......2005-10-14

The problem with long running series is that usual at some point the stories get stale. Not so with the Miles Vorkosigan series because Bujold allows her characters to grow and change with their experiences. In the last book, Miles nearly lost his life but thanks to the miracles of medicine he has another shot at serving his world however, there are after effects of that resurrection. Miles comes face to face with limitations, limitations that could change is life radically. Meanwhile, on Barrayar changes are occuring that set in motion a chain of events that will change the face of ImpSec for years to come.

Not much more can be said without spoiling the book for you. However, there is a starkness to this book that causes the reader as well as Miles to evaluate the meaning of honor, justice, reward, and punishment. Can we be true to ourselves if we are false to those around us? Does the end justify the means as long as we get what we want in the end? What are you willing to trade for your hearts desire? The passionate wanting of Miles to serve is so strong you just bleed for him in this no holds barred novel where Miles faces temptation and must solve a mystery to save a friend.

3 out of 5 stars A bit slow.......2004-06-04

Fans of Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan saga will probably enjoy the personal growth of the series' hero in "Memory." Miles, cashiered from his beloved military for lying about a serious incident precipitated by one of his seizures - an aftereffect of his cryo-resurrection - falls into a depression on his home world, the rigidly class-conscious Barrayar.

And then nothing much happens for the next 200 pages, until the precise and unflappable Simon Illyan, head of Imperial Security, begins acting peculiar.
Miles' self-appointed task is to get to the bottom of what has happened to Simon and who is responsible.

Bujold invests her characters with plenty of wit and charm, and Miles' investigation uses standard mystery techniques against a space-opera background, but the solution to the mystery will be obvious to most at least a hundred pages before Miles gets it.

Nevertheless, this is an enjoyable read and Miles reaches a major new turning point in his career before it's over.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Look At the Fabulous World Of Scrapbooking.......2007-01-21

Wendy Bagley is a hoot...she has an incredibly keen sense of humor and birds eye view of the scrapbooking world. Even her chapter titles are enough to elicit a chuckle or two. If you're a scrapper or know a scrapper, this book will give you a laugh and an insight or two into the world of scrapbooking.

I read it through in one evening...couldn't put it down. The chapters are short and so engaging that you just can't resist turning the next page. The perfect gift for a scrapper or yourself. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Essays for Mothers.......2006-08-13

This book is way overdue! Its essays are poignant, amusing, and the author comes across as if you are her best friend. Bless this book for getting me off the hook for not being the perfect mother, sister, friend, person. Very funny, very good.

5 out of 5 stars Not a How-to, but a very funny Why-to! .......2006-05-01

Every page of this book of essays made me laugh, if not wildly, then unexpectedly. Nearly every page of my copy of SCRAPS is earmarked or underlined in part for a funny sentence or paragraph that I plan to reread. The author gives us a wonderfully twisted look at screwy women who scrapbook (or don't, and wish they did). I love-uh-love-uh-LOVED it!

5 out of 5 stars Need a Good Belly Laugh?.......2005-12-17

This book is just hilarious! The mildly seasoned scrapbooker with even a hint of a sense of humor will find themselves bursting out laughing at any moment-I sometimes read a chapter in the middle of the night if I am having trouble sleeping and have been quite worried I might awaken the entire household with my laughter! This book sounds just like something my sister-in-law would write, so I often hear her voice reading it to me :-) Yes, at one point the author even refers to the reader as "Missy" just as she does with me on occasion! I have never met Wendy Bagley, but if she has a tiny bit stage presence, I think she would be a great stand up comedian at one of those big nationally sponsored Crops. So, yes, be sure you buy this book for yourself and any other scrapbookers you know who might benefit from a good belly laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Supremely Funny!.......2005-11-18

This hilarious sendup of scrapbooking is funny from the first page. From there on it only gets better. Each essay takes a look at the obsessions and passions of people who are crazy about their family, friends, and photos. When she's not being funny, the author can actually be touching. This book made me look at my sweet wife in a new light.

    Product Description

Growing up in our family meant spending summers at the cabin two rooms and an outhouse! We didn t mind going to the bathroom outside in the dark, and we didn t really care that we had to wake up before dawn to go fishing with grandpa. We were too busy having so much fun learning how to swim, how to fish, and of course, learning how to tell great fish stories of the one that got away!

These experiences shaped our childhood, taught us some very important lessons, and gave us the most wonderful memories and stories to share with our own kids.

Now that we have children, we want them to experience all the adventures we had growing up. Capturing memories of their first time driving the boat, learning how to fish and to water-ski are easy to do with this book. With this interactive book, you will treasure these traditions in your family!

Family traditions are the things that we hold dear to us and allow us to pass along our values to the next generation. You also capture your memories with stories and photographs that mean the most to you and your family. This book, as a photo album with a scrapbook feel, will be a cabin keepsake.

Children are the most precious gift of all. I invite you to share the experience of life s greatest adventures with them, and to record your memories with words and pictures. Together, you ll create a unique book to be shared with family and friends for years to come.
