(These books are written by J.K. Rowling herself under the pseudonyms Newt Scamander and Kennilworthy Whisp.) Finally, Muggles will have the chance to discover where the Quintaped lives, what the Puffskein eats, and why it is best not to leave milk out for a Knarl. The Quidditch textbook explains where the Golden Snitch came from, how the Bludgers came into existence, and why the Wigtown Wanderers have pictures of meat cleavers on their clothes. Both books, designed to look like Harry Potter's actual, used Hogwarts textbooks, feature silly scribblings from Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Proceeds from the sale of this gift set will go to improving and saving the lives of children around the world. Harry Potter fans, rejoice! (All ages)

5 out of 5 stars Harry Potter Schoolbooks.......2007-09-24

I really enjoyed these books. They were an enjoyable sampling of a few extra aspects of the Harry Potter universe. J.K. did a good job with fleshing out the history of quidditch and the variety of magical creatures that get mentioned throughout the HP series.

4 out of 5 stars Cute and entertaining.......2007-08-29

A must read for Harry Potter fans. Quidditch Through the Ages is written to appear like a book that is actually been checked out from the Hogwarts Library while Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them is an actual textbook used by Harry and Ron. The markings written by Harry and Ron in the book are priceless.

5 out of 5 stars Harry Potter Schoolbooks.......2007-08-23

It is an amusing set of books. If you have all seven books, you will also like this set. I didn't realize that Rowling had written this set around book five. The money from the sales goes to charity and the odd facts are interesting. She is creative in her description of the different beasts in the first book and the history of quidditch in the second book. The other games that predate quidditch are amusing.

5 out of 5 stars Good companion.......2007-08-16

These books are good to fill in the blanks that all of the creature and quiddich references leave in the Harry Potter series. they are short enough to read in one sitting, so they are worth it for any Harry Potter fan wanting to get a little more out of the HP universe

4 out of 5 stars A Great Complement to the Harry Potter Series.......2007-08-16

These two books complement the Harry Potter Series. Designed as "school books" for Harry, they explain the game of quidditch and the different beasts which inhabit the wizarding world.

If you are a serious Harry Potter fan, you need these books

Book Description

Shortly after he left office, President Harry S. Truman began to write down his typically blunt, honest commentaries about FDR and his other colleagues, the job of the presidency, the workings of the government and the Constitution -- and his picks for the nation's best and worst presidents. Since he minced no words, Truman asked that these writings -- sometimes funny, sometimes very serious, always to the point -- be released to the public only after he and Mrs. Truman were gone. Now, this totally frank book by the thirty-third president, lovingly edited by his daughter, Margaret, has been published at last. In it, Truman speaks clearly in his own inimitable voice, and with the down-home, across-the-back-fence feeling of a born storyteller from Missouri, he tells you exactly what's on his mind about these and other subjects:

2 out of 5 stars Take it with a heavy dash of salt........2007-07-14

This book is worth reading only if you've already learned quite a lot of history. In many instances Truman embellishes or distorts historical facts, and on certain points he is embarrassingly wrong. It's a wonder that the editor of the book, his daughter Margaret (who majored in history in college) didn't catch some of his errors. Particularly egregious is Truman's discussion of the American Revolution, in which he asserts that George III was "an absolute monarch." Nothing could be further from the truth. By the late 18th century, the King of England had considerably less political power than the President of the United States would have in later years.

Moreover, Truman's attacks on Eisenhower smack of vindictiveness, and while they may contain some truth they are not to be trusted on the whole. Truman was a suspicious man, and once he took a dislike to someone, he tended to put the most negative possible spin on anything that man said or did.

The book is written in a lively style, but beware: Truman was a politician, a man full of grudges and prejudices. These come out in this book--sometimes strongly enough to make you wince.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun.......2006-03-21

I feel lucky when I find a book I really enjoy and this one I really enjoyed. He called Daniel Webster a "gasbag". He said Teddy Roosevelt did a lot of talking but very little in the way of acting to solve problems. Truman loved Andrew Jackson and after reading his description of Jackson I also feel that he was one of the best presidents and one of the most interesting characters. This was a really enjoyable way of learning the history of this country and seeing these guys the way they really were and not the mythic characters I used to think from taking American History in high school. I think high school students should be made to read this book, so that American History would come to life for them. I never thought anything of James Polk before reading what Harry wrote about him. And Calvin Coolidge sleeping (I mean zzzzzzz) his way through the Presidency! I liked the way Harry didn't blame Hoover for the depression. Harry was the little kid describing the Emperor's new clothes!

4 out of 5 stars Harry Gives 'em Hell Again.......2002-11-21

As a child and young adult, I was taught to have great respect for Mr. Truman. Among the things he was praised for was his plain-speaking manner and the fact that he told it as it was, with no sugar coating. I never really understood what that meant until I read this book. The Harry Truman that comes across here is a person you could easily image as your next-door neighbor. He always gives it to you in a no-nonsense, down-to-earth way that anybody can understand the first time.

That having been said I just want to voice two criticisms. First, I think Mr. Truman's understanding of history might be a little too "black and white". For example, he states that after WWI, the allied powers didn't really go to hard on Germany in terms of making the Germans pay reparations. I think just the opposite is true. The allied powers at Versailles imposed very hard terms on the Germans. Mr. Truman was correct in stating that the allies never entered German soil, however, the severity of the peace terms combined with the fact that the Germans never saw an enemy soldier sowed the seeds for Hitler's preaching that the Germans were stabbed in the back. I'm just saying that perhaps Mr. Truman's historical understanding was not as sophisticated as me might think.

Second, it seems that Mr. Truman's dislike of Mr. Eisenhower finds it's way onto virtually every page of the book. No matter who or what he's talking about, he seems to find a way to turn the subject into a criticism of Ike. I guess he really didn't like him too much.

All that having been said, I think this is great book.

5 out of 5 stars One great read!.......2002-10-30

This book does something very rare--it actually reveals the plain-spoken nature of Harry S. Truman while still demonstrating the depth and breadth of Truman's knowledge of history, politics, economics, and foreign affairs. It was really amazing to me that an essentially "self-taught" man was so brilliant with such a deep understanding of a vast array of issues. Unlike our current president, Harry S. Truman understood the complexities of international relations and implications of taking unilateral approaches in our foreign policy.

Truman also recognized that military action was something to be used as a LAST resort, especially when the rest of the world is against such an action. Although Truman had an appreciation for some military experience in public servants, he also recognized the danger of career military men in those positions. Unlike politicians of today, Truman was bold enough to make the unpopular decision to fire General McArthur because our foreign policy should not be predicated on our ability to anhilate every other country on the face of the earth.

5 out of 5 stars Harry Truman Tells It Like It Is.......2000-07-20

This book is absolutely essential for the student of Harry S. Truman in particular, as well as for the student of History in general. Truman goes through all the important historical phases of our country and makes the information really breathe. In this age of political sophistry, it's very refreshing to hear a politician just being himself. It's interesting that Truman was vilified in his day. Perhaps he told it too much like it was for ears of that time. Nonetheless, this is a book that can be read again and again. This and Merle Miller's wonderful book, Plain Speaking -- An Oral Biography of Harry S. Truman, should be in every Truman admirer's library.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2006-05-30

im anxious in going off to college in the fall. this book great in explaining how college is different from high school and how to succeed. there were informative and comedical lists such as "books that they expect you to read before you get there" and "how studying is better than sex". just a awesome book in general and recommend it to any high school graduate that is off to college in the fall.

5 out of 5 stars Leave for College Knowing what you're in for.......2005-11-03

I've looked through several other College Survival guides, but this one is the best. Every tip is a list, and it takes much, much, more information then any other college guide and condenses it all into easy to read lists. In here it has the basics and much more supplimental information too. Get The Naked Roommate for a basic college survival guide in a more organized format. Then read College in a Can for all the things not covered in that book, much of it is more irreverent. This book feels more like a magazine and in between the really helpful college survival information are fun lists just to get you into the college mood like "Best College Movies".

You can't use this book for every decision you have in college, such as choosing a major or career (I highly recommend Cool Careers for Dummies), but it will give you an overview of those things so when you later get a book on those subjects and do more though research you can have that feeling of knowing the basics. This will eliminate that feeling of plunging in the middle without a clue.

Because this book isn't as structured as some, you can't buy this book without The Naked Roomate.

5 out of 5 stars The One Book they will take with them !.......2004-07-04

This note from my 18 year old grandaughter says it all:

Grandma-
I got your book AND I just finished reading it. It was really funny, I
liked it a lot. I've already loaned it out to a friend! Its definitely
coming with me to college and I can put some of the funny lists on the
walls. Anyway, just wanted to let you know I enjoyed the book! Thanks a
bunch!

5 out of 5 stars Can-Do Strategies for College Survival.......2004-06-18

My daughter, a college freshman, read this book cover to cover. Lots of straight talk on everything from dealing with roommates and developing good study habits to handling sex and drugs, delivered in user-friendly bite-size chunks, rendered with wit and a real sense of what kids need to know. There's some entertaining fluff in between the no-nonsense tips and techniques for handling the transition to college life. Especially liked the 101-book reading list - a daunting but valuable heads-up on what it takes to achieve cultural literacy in the 21st century. A treasury of useful stuff for the college-bound (and for those aging parents who wish they could wind the clock back 30 years and try it again!).

5 out of 5 stars The Inside Scoop on College Life.......2004-06-17

Got this for my daughter, an entering freshman, because it packs boatloads of info into easy-to-digest lists on every possible topic. Practical, real-world advice on everything from study habits and reading lists to sex and drugs. Straight talk delivered with humor and real understanding of what the college-bound kid is about to face. Some of the lists are just for fun, which makes the rest of the "advice" -- like a daunting list of 101 books she should read by the time she graduates -- easier to swallow.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2006-06-08

I wasn't really a Harry Caray fan but a friend let me borrow this book for a recent flight. I've always been a baseball fan so I thought I'd get something out it.

As it turned out, I was right. Steve Stone, who shared the radio booth with Harry, a Cubs legend, does a great job relaying some wonderful and hilarous stories about his partner. The story about Harry getting his "manhood" stuck in his zipper during a commercial break and trying to continue on had me laughing out loud.

More than anything, however, I just really enjoyed a unique look at the game. I've read players' books and even books by managers, in addition to ones like Moneyball and record boooks, but I gotta admit that this was a new one for me.

I think Cubs and baseball fans in general will enjoy this. Even after Harry's death, it's still a treat.

5 out of 5 stars A fitting and real tribute.......2004-01-22

Steve Stone was Harry Carey's straight man for many years. In a sense, he was Harry's Norton. In this book, he tells the shadow's story, including the ups and down.

On the humorous side, Steve discusses Harry's struggle to remember names, and how he tormented Arnie (the producer) with his requests.

Steve also paints the image of Harry the promoter, explaining how in his way, Harry promoted the character that Steve was to play on the air. Stone also admits that he owes his job in many ways to Harry. That they stayed together for 15 years is a tribute to a partnership that in many ways seemed like a marriage.

Some of the things you may not know... With only a very rare exception, he didn't drink on TV, but kept the Bud glass a plug for his sponsors. That he always paid when we went out, even though he'd plug his favorite watering holes.

Steve also covers the dark side of Harry - how he handled grudges. How he'd insist on being the prima donna. Their petty fights, and how they'd get over them. His ostracism and eventual reconciliation with his family.

In the end, you're left with both a fitting and realistic picture of the icon.

5 out of 5 stars Makes ya laugh, cry and laugh even harder.......2003-08-26

This book is one of the best ever. All you have to do is be a baseball fan. I gurantee even those dreaded Cardinal fans will love to read this book. The stories that Steve has in here will make you laugh and cry and than laugh again.

No matter what team you rooted for, everyone loved Harry. Sad to see him go, but glad to have the book to learn just a little bit more about him. Truly a comical wonder.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Stories.......2003-01-07

I grew up listening to Harry Caray and Steve Stone on WGN. I must say that this book brought back a lot of great memories and provided a lot of behind the scenes details that I never knew about. Any fan of baseball or story-telling will love this book. Steve Stone's candor makes the stories even better.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Any Cubs Fan.......2002-12-01

Steve Stone opens up about his personal and working relationship with Harry Caray in this book. The many anecdotes will not only bring back many fond memories, but will also shed some light on parts of his life that most people don't know about. For example, he wasn't really drunk up there in that booth. He was just acting so fans could relate. Harry was always one for showmanship, and he was one of the best at it. If you miss Harry, you need to read this...it will help.

5 out of 5 stars Cute, and goes well with the series.......2007-07-05

This thin little volume is an excellent supplement to the popular Harry Potter series. All of the magical species mentioned in the series are covered in this book, along with many more. Each animal is described physically, with notes on its temperament and magical ability. Also included are "Beings" such as Merpeople.

The book is arranged alphabetically. Each creature is also classified by the level of danger that it brings: Expert Wizard Needed, Competent Wizard Should Cope, etc. Harry's notes, handwritten of course, pepper the pages. Example: On the page where Chaemera eggs are mentioned as being an Untradable Good, Harry notes that "Hagrid'll be getting some next."

All in all, a worthwhile purchase.

Book Description

On the late afternoon of June 25, 1876, high atop a Montana Hill, George Armstrong Custer with pearl handled revolvers blazing, stood with the last of his brave staff fighting the overwhelming numbers of fierce, blood-thirsty encircling Sioux warriors. They died to the last man.

For many years almost every bar in Montana displayed a beautiful painting of these heroic men dying nobly under overwhelming odds. This picture carried the glory of Custer's name and the staunch bravery of his Seventh Cavalry down through the century. It fired the American nation with a sense of great pride and inspiration over the years.

But in reality, this scene never happened that way.

After years of research, historian Harry Combs has put together the most exciting, perhaps controversial, chronicle of what really happened on that fateful hot afternoon at the Little Big Horn. Read the truth of this amazing legend in Where Was Custer?

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Nonessential reading for the Little Big Horn student.......2005-07-04

Books about the Battle of the Little Big Horn are almost without number (I should know; I am at present writing my own!) and unfortunately not all of them are particularly insightful or informative. I am sorry to say that in my opinion Combs's "Where Was Custer?" is among this latter group. I think he is too enraptured by those Indian narratives presented by David Humphreys Miller, for one thing (Indian narratives can have great value in deciphering what happened at the Little Big Horn, but Miller's are perhaps not among the most reliable). And Combs' conclusion as to what specifically happened to George Custer is neither original nor especially convincing. There are much better books available about these events/

1 out of 5 stars Sound the Retreat.......2000-03-12

Harry Combs book, "At the Battle of the Little Big Horn Where Was Custer?" is truly an interesting book; that is if you also like JFK conspiracy books. I am not sure where the author got his research from, but this book is jam packed (in it's 120 pages) with inaccurate statements. I've been reading and researching the Battle of the Little Big Horn for a few years now and have never come across this story of how the famed Scout, Mitch Boyer, lead Custer into an ambush. If the author wanted to purport this theory then it was OK by me; except when he tries to rewrite history to make his theory work. One can forgive an author when he makes several mistakes of history like writing "Fourteenth Cavalry" (no such unit) or that Gall was an Ogalala instead of a Hunkpapa. But, you do get terribly turned off to the book when the author make the mistakes like CPT Weir was on Reno Hill prior to the arrival of Benteen or that Custer made a tactical error by sending Giovanni Martini with the note to Benteen; thus depriving himself of a trumpeter. A very casual amateur historian knows that Weir was part of Benteen's Battalion and that Martini was only orderly of the day (actually assigned to Company H (Benteen) and that Custer's trumpeter was Chief Trumpeter Henry Voss. Additionaly, the author does a disservice to the Crow Scouts who fought with Reno in the Valley Fight and, for a few, died trying to save the formation by implying that they purposely lead Custer to his death. After that, this book was down hill for me. I wouldn't give this book a passing mark. I have given this book a one star rating because that is the lowest I was allowed to give. My advice is invest your money in a well documented work from authors like Utley, Gray, or Graham.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and Informative!.......1999-08-28

A great detailed account of the epic battle from the men who fought in it. Rich with information with the flow of a story book - great balance and a great piece of literature.

      5 out of 5 stars Page turner.......2005-04-18

I normally don't read mysteries but found myself captivated by this story involving a serial killer. Ironically, the bad sister who helped make the killer the demented person he turned out to be, happened to be named Michelle, and she was a blonde like me. Go figure. I liked the way the author had the serial killer surpress his urges and try hard not to give into them. Made you want to insert yourself into the story to protect people who were at risk of being harmed by the man. I think the author's writing skills are excellent. She sucks you right into the story. I found myself rooting for the heroine to figure out who her dad was despite his twisted past. The writer did an excellent job at getting into the serial killers mind to the point where you could understand him even if you despised what he had done. I love how his son found out about his father's past. Great story. It'll make you shudder and sit on the edge of your seat. The ending was satisfying. I would definitely recommend this author to people wanting an exciting read.

      5 out of 5 stars Secrets uncovered.......2001-06-12

What do you do when you find that your whole life is based on a lie? Lisa Littau is called to the hospital when her mother has a heart attack and as she lies dying, tells Lisa that as an infant, she was illegally adopted. Lisa is devastated, her entire world turned upside down and she becomes obsessed with finding her birth parents. With her young daughter in tow, she heads to Dallas to search for her natural parents. Her search attracts the attention of James Johnson, one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in America. Johnson is a haunted man, who has also built his life on a series of lies, most of which will destroy him if they become known. Where Secrets Lie, L.C. Hayden's latest is an absorbing suspense novel, filled with red herrings that will have you dashing down many wrong turns in your efforts to solve the puzzle. She brings such depth to her characters that you sometimes forget they aren't real. As Lisa spirals closer to the truth, she faces the realization that someone doesn`t want her to find that truth. This is a good old-fashioned heroine in danger suspense novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.

      4 out of 5 stars Harry Bronson's Third Book.......2001-05-06

This is a story of betrayals: fathers and mothers are busy betraying their children, and the children, likewise, are betraying one another, sometimes knowingly, sometimes not, but the betrayals cascade like dominoes. This is also the story of an adoption that goes terribly wrong. It opens with James Johnson burying his latest blond victim. He calls her Bobbye, and cuts her blond hair to take with him. He knows this is not the Bobbye he seeks, but his Bobbye's image transposes itself on other blonds. Or is it his blond sister Michelle's image? Questions, questions, questions... Suffice it to say that the man is a serial killer who, when his own wife dies, promises her memory that he will stop the killing. Unfortunately, Johnson is the father of a blond-blue eyed toddler. Officially, he arranges her death by drowning. Unofficially, he sells her in an illegal adoption. This little girl grows up as Lisa Littau, until her adoptive mother confesses, on her death bed, that Lisa was bought, and offers only one small clue as to the identity of her original family. Lisa, now a 28 year old divorcee with a blond blue-eyed, 5 year old daughter of her own, begins her quest to find her biological roots. She places an ad in the local paper and contacts Harry Bronson, also known as the "Ma'am Guy", a detective with the missing persons bureau. Harry gently tries to screen the parent pretenders that surface, as well as Lisa's other activities, but the gullible Lisa is determined to do things her way. It is not long before the wealthy James Johnson is back in the hunt, stalking a naive Lisa and her daughter. Will Lisa find out that she is the daughter of a serial killer? And what about Thomas, her dark haired, previously unknown stepbrother, exclusively in line to inherit Johnson's fortune? Who is trying to kill whom, here? When all the loose ends are finally tied together, and Lisa discovers where the secrets lie, how will this knowledge effect her relationships with those she loves? Is it possible for a serial killer to emerge as a hero? Lots of questions, but no soap box preaching about adoption pro or con. Take a deep breath on page one and you may not come up for air until half way through the book. If you like high action, and a fast paced mystery, with no deep messages, you will like this book. The action is not slowed down by long descriptiveparagraphs. Settings are rather sketchy except for a marvelous man-made West Virginia hill that defies my imagination. The emphasis is on plot and fast action, and Hayden is a master at ending a chapter at the proper moment and rolling you right into the next page before you know it! The story does have a few minor flaws within the details. Don't let them snag you, keep on going! Again, the strength of this book is in its speed and its plot; everything else is secondary. My only major complaint is that Harry does not get enough print space. He is a quiet, polite, competent detective, but this is presented as Lisa's story and I do get impatient with her from chapter to chapter. Neverthe less, this is a galloping good entertainment.

      1 out of 5 stars Don't Do It!.......2007-01-22

This has to be one of the most overpriced and under-satisfactory books ever. Nearly $20 for an ultra thin book the size of a Dr. Seuss story, completely devoid of pictures, but because it has Rowling's name on it, they feel compelled to overcharge the unknowing public. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK, and if you do, don't pay full price. Absolutely and completely NOT worth it.

Ever wanted to learn more about FANTASTIC BEASTS but were afraid to open your "Monster Book of Monsters?" This handy little reference book will help you pass your Care of Magical Creatures class without the bites and scratches associated with the alternative.

Easy to use A-Z reference, with Misistry of Magic classification codes, and a special forward by Albus Dumbledore.

Please note that this copy once belonged to a previous 3rd year student, Harry Potter. Any information provided in the margins by Mr. Potter has not been authorized by Newt Scamander or by the Ministry of Magic.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, but..........2006-03-18

The one problem with this fabulous little book is that many of the creatures are difficult to envision without an illustration, of which there are very few (and when there are, they are merely black and white sketches.) It can be quite hard to tell if you're picturing the animal correctly. Fortunately for me, my favorite of the beasts is illustrated. This book definitely convinced me to get myself some Fwoopers--birds of African origin with vivid orange, yellow, green or pink plumage.

      5 out of 5 stars Short & Sweet.......2005-09-11

A quick, fun read filled with humor, wit and perhaps even some insights.

Very cute and for a good cause. More information on magical creatures found in the books. Worth the short read.
