Book Description
Bestselling author and expert on leadership John C. Maxwell shares the only rule that matters-in business and in life. How does a person judge what is ethical?Sometimes it's clear. In the past year or two, ethical lapses in corporate America have been well documented. But is it always easy to see where the line is in life? What's the standard? And can it work in all situations? Maxwell thinks it can. In ETHICS 101, he shows how people can live with integrity by using the Golden Rule as their standard-regardless of religion, culture, or circumstances. Along the way, he delves into the desires of the human heart, reveals the five most common pitfalls that throw people off the ethical track, and teaches how to develop the Midas touch when it comes to personal integrity.

Amazingly Simple and Elegant View of Ethics!.......2007-05-31
This book is fabulous! I used it for an Ethics book club class and virtually all the participants gave it high marks for readability and clear ideas. It's a little book with big ideas to live by.
Ethics 001: The Search For More Money.......2007-03-22
The Reverend John C. Maxwell is a former Wesleyan Methodist minister, former pastor of Skyline Wesleyan Church in San Diego. He holds a Doctor of Ministry degree. Why this information is not manifest on his website remains a mystery. Megachurches are big business, indeed, and though Maxwell left Skyline with massive debt, he has some useful, though unoriginal, information in his "101" series that is borne out of his years as senior pastor of Skyline. Surely this information would not discourage sales (?).
Having taught philosophy and business ethics for many years at various universities, I am always looking for good assigned reading that challenges students to think outside the box of my lectures, and to give serious consideration to matters of ethics and morals in both their personal lives, and how their lives extend to others in all contexts. Since I also was associated with the Wesleyan church that Maxwell pastured years ago, when I saw this title featured, I wanted to see if his book would add to my students' knowledge base and life application. Unfortunately, what I found was either a shallow presentation of familiar themes he used to preach on Sunday morning, or the reworking of material that has already been out there in one form or another. In short, "Ethics 101" is really Ethics 001, that provides the reader with little foundation in ethics and morals. Dr. Maxwell is not an academic (he has a ministry doctorate), nor does he take any academic approach in his book. In fact, he thinks philosophy has "confused' ethics when, in fact, because Maxwell has no philosophical background, he brings little to the debate. Unfortunately, Maxwell's book confuses Ethics. How does he know that philosophy confuses a particular issue when he does not know philosophy? In truth, the history of Western Civilization, has produced libraries of clear information concerning ethics and morals, but you won't find (as you cannot find) any of that here. Ethics goes far beyond the Golden Rule model, reaching back to Plato (The Republic, etc.) and Aristotle ("The Politics"; "Ethics"), down to Cicero (45 BC) who wrote one of the best, and clearest, works on ethics titled, "Duties." Most of my lectures consist of footnotes to Plato, then Aristotle, and then demonstrates how those principles were worked out by the Romans in Cicero and others. There is no doubt that both Jesus and Paul had access to these three writers, and it is impossible to read Jesus and not see the influence of Cicero. I am personally put off that Maxwell has distain for philosophy, given that the Golden Rule is prima facie, philosophy, and is a repeated maxim from earlier philosophers. The honest reality is that philosophy is everywhere and is embodied in every idea good or bad, business advertisement, magazine, television and feature film, and even in Maxwell's sermons and the goofy (and gratituously violent) "Left Behind" book series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins. I can skim through any of Maxwell's books and remember when much of the material was, at one time or another, a Sunday sermon in his Wesleyan church. Now Maxwell is hailed as a "leadership" guru, writing books and speaking about "leadership." While this may fly on the motivational circuit, it brings little, if any thing, of value to the intellectual debate. Sadly, too many of these kinds of books are written at the popular level, simply to make money, rather than provide a solid, educational understanding for the reader.
If you are serious about wanting to learn about the historical development of ethics, read Plato's "Republic", Aristotle's "Ethics", "Duties" of Cicero (Loeb series; don't overlook his classic book "On Friendship" and "Old Age"), Plutarch's "Moralia" (especially vol. 4 of the Loeb series; Plutarch was a Greek who lived in Rome and was a contemporary with Jesus). In my view, it is so much easier to understand the Scriptures when they have been properly set in their historical context.
For a deeper understanding of ethical theories (egoism, utilitarianism, existentialism, Marxism, capitalism, et al.) which Maxwell never bothers to mention (because I don't think he knows them), read Shaw and Berry: "Moral Issues in Business". If you must purchase Maxwell's book, buy it used. Note the large number "used". I give "Ethics 101" a whole single Star as one's review cannot be posted without at least one star. Judge for yourself, but I beg you to read Cicero and Plutarch once in your life if you really want a foundation in ethics.
As an aside, one of the finest books on leadership ever written that also encompasses ethics, is "The Churchill Factors" by Larry Kryske. Kryske is an internationally recognized historian and speaker on Winston Churchill, and in this particular volume, Kryske applies the life and words of Churchill to leadership in business and ethics. The Golden Rule As The Foundation for All Ethical Behavior.......2007-02-17
John C. Maxwell, a minister, management consultant, and prolific author of inspirational and insightful business related books, believes that ethical principles can be summarized by the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. He documents that this rule, or some close variation of it, is found in all of the world's major religious traditions.
This is not the book that offers guides to how the definition of ethics can vary from one legal code to another. It is rather a book that offers guides on how to live one's life and do one's job with longterm success.
"If you want to do something that will make an impact beyond your own life," Maxwell writes in summary, "then treat people better than they treat you, walk the extra mile, help people who cannot help you, do right when it's natural to do wrong, and keep your promises even when it hurts."
He divides the world into people who "go for the gold" and people who "go for the golden rule" and finds the latter are much more successful in ways that really matter than the former.
This book is an excellent supplement and response to much narrower attempts by lawyers, college professors, numerous professional groups, state government ethics commissions, good government advocates and others to treat ethics as a legal code which one needs legal advice to interpret, honor, or defend oneself from.
Ethics, Maxwell says, is not a complex issue. Ethics is about living a life worthy of self-respect, and the respect of family members, colleagues, and competitors.
Explains How Doing the Right Thing is the Best Way to Live!!!.......2005-07-28
+++++
This book (whose original title was "There's No Such Thing as `Business' Ethics") by leadership expert John C. Maxwell is an easy-to-read, small book that states that ethics is not complicated. Maxwell explains:
"Ethics is ethics. If you desire to be ethical, you live by one standard across the board...Educators, philosophers, theologians, and lawyers have taken what is a simple matter and made it very confusing...This book's goal is to help you find the way to live and work ethically and also achieve greater success."
The one "standard" Maxwell recommends using in all situations is the Golden Rule: the precept that one should behave toward others as one would want others to behave toward oneself.
Maxwell does a good job in explaining why the Golden Rule is the standard to be used in all situations. However, the only situation he uses in his numerous, true, effective example stories is the type (RIGHT versus WRONG). For example, a cashier gives you too much change. The WRONG thing to do is to keep the extra change. The RIGHT thing to do is thus to give the extra change back.
The author gives many quotations from prominent people to get his points across. One of my favorites is a quotation from Ted Koppel:
"There's harmony and inner peace to be found in following a moral compass [he's referring to the Golden Rule] that points in the same direction regardless of fashion or trend."
Maxwell touches on the fact that all people are not the same and that the rule may have to be slightly altered to accommodate them.
A feature of this book is that certain important summary points are taken out of the main narrative and bordered between two horizontal lines for easy reference. I counted almost forty of these peppered throughout the book. Here are two examples:
(1) "There are really two important points when it comes to ethics. The first is a standard to follow. The second is the will to follow it."
(2) "Every day, whenever the issue of ethical behavior confronts you, ask this question: `How would I like to be treated in this situation?'"
As mentioned, Maxwell effectively explains the use of the Golden Rule in (RIGHT versus WRONG) situations. However, he does not explain how to use the rule in (RIGHT versus RIGHT) situations. This is called the ethical dilemma. To be fair, Maxwell does mention the ethical dilemma but his explanation of it is rather simplistic.
Here is an example of a dilemma. You are asked in your high-paying job to do something you feel is not right or else be fired. (It took years of hard work to get the high pay you're now getting.) The RIGHT thing to do according to the golden rule is to quit your job and get another lower paying one. However, there are ill members of your family who depend on your high income. So the RIGHT thing to do is not to quit your job. Maxwell spends no time in explaining such situations.
Despite not explaining how to handle dilemma situations, I still feel that this is a useful book that takes the technical jargon out of understanding ethics. Maxwell gives numerous true cases that prove how the Golden Rule builds morale, increases productivity, encourages teamwork, lowers employee turnover, and keeps clients coming back.
In conclusion, this is an effective book that explains some major ethical concepts. It demonstrates how doing the right thing is the best way to live and fosters a winning situation for all!!

Insightful!.......2005-06-22
Author John C. Maxwell has spent years thinking about leadership and ethical action, and it shows. In this short volume, he condenses his years of reflection into clear, accessible principles that any reader can immediately apply. He supports his points with anecdotes, and with quotes from sacred texts and authors from a variety of cultures. His clarity makes his work bold. There's no way you could mistake what he's saying, and that's refreshing, especially given contemporary concerns about corporate governance. While the simplicity and brevity of the book makes it broadly accessible, we especially recommend it to two readerships: those already dedicated to living ethically, who are looking for tools to apply, and those who are skeptical about the utility of ethics. The book (which was previously published as "There's No Such Thing as Business Ethics") has only two real weaknesses. The first is that Maxwell's definition of an ethical dilemma is far too simple, and he treats it too briefly. (What do we do when love and duty clash? What do we do when directly ordered to do something unethical by a superior, who thinks the action is correct - and someone else depends upon our income?) The second is that Maxwell discusses how to treat others as if we were all the same deep down. Perhaps we are - but he doesn't fully address the many personal and cultural differences that one must negotiate along the way. Our moral dilemma: is it right to dwell on such relatively minor flaws in a book we basically respect, agree with, appreciate and recommend warmly? You be the judge.

The Beauty of Guerrilla Marketing.......2004-09-16
... The beauty is Guerilla Marketing falls within the standards of using multiple Amazon.com accounts to create very convincing and completely flattering reviews of books so that you sell more of them.
Bit of paradox, be warned about books with such flawless ratings.
BTW I'm a marketing manager --- I eat this sort of stuff up. In fact for *some reason* this book appeared in my search results while researching a semi-fraudulent search engine company. Cheers and I'd suggest you save your cash and watch more Geico commercials! =)

After reading 'Guerrilla Marketing', follow up with this one.......2003-10-16
Once you understand what Guerrilla Marketing is all about by reading the bestseller by the same author, this is one of many other books in the series that will benefit you tremendously! To summarize what Guerrilla Marketing is all about - it is for business owners who want to use their time, energy and imagination rather than dollars to achieve their marketing goals.
This short 200 page book has 50 rules that small businesses need to follow to succeed. It feels like they are all based on common sense as you read through the rules. The book backs up the rules with good data and solid explanations. That's what sold me on a lot of the rules. I am still not so sure about a few rules but maybe as I start implementing the others, I will realize the value of the others.
As an example, here's rule # 17: 'Be sure your timing is on; the right marketing to the right people is only right when the timing is right'. It sounds like common sense and it is but the 10 tips that follow in this chapter on how to implement this rule are very valuable. This is what got me hooked on the rules in this book.
The 50 rules are divided into 4 parts - Golden Rules to Guide your Thinking, to Guide your Effectiveness, to Guide your Marketing Materials, and to Guide your Actions. My favorite rule is part 4, it is rule # 41: 'It is wise to aim to be first in line when your prospect buys, but it is more profitable to be second in line'. When I thought of the number of times that my primary choice of product or service was not able to provide good enough quality that I ended up becoming a loyal customer of my second choice is what made me take notice of this rule. In this chapter, 20 tips are shared that help take advantage of this long term strategy that is difficult for most Guerrillas that are strapped for cash.
Bottom line - if you have enjoyed some of the other books in this series, you won't be disappointed with this one. Good luck!
a new love.......2002-09-05
It used to be that I couldn't put this book down. It was on point and insightful and really helped me start my business. But that was before a friend handed me Guerrilla PR Wired by Michael Levine. It was brilliant and current and the methods were spot on. Theories such as the Magoo Theory helped me to really zone in on why certain techniques work and why others don't. I couldn't go back to Guerrilla Marketing Excellence after that.
Guerrilla Marketing Excellence.......2001-03-08
This is one of my all time favorite marketing books. I often refer to it time and time again. A MUST read for every business owner, manager and entrepreneur!...
I made miracles happen using this book.......2000-04-23
This book as well as the other Geurrilla marketing books by Levinson adjusted my entire concept of thinking as a businessman and I made miracle happen as a result. Levinson really sifts out a lot of nonsense of marketing tactics, and gives you one atomic weapon after another to really launch an effective attack on the marketplace and hold a position. It was a book of continuous eureka's for me as I read. I suggest keeping a notepad handy as you read because your bright ideas will begin to explode one after the other and you will want to record them for later use. This book is entirely loaded with data. I recommend it for everyone with a desire to be successful in business.

Save your money and go practice the Golden Rule.......2006-05-11
This more I think about this book, the more thought provoking it becomes. First, I find it amazing that anyone could take a belief that's widely known (practically a cliche), add nothing of substance to it, and actually write a book about it. Second, I find it even more amazing that it took 134 pages to make the Golden Rule applicable to business. Third, and perhaps the most amazing of all, is the fact that I actually spent my own hard earned money on this book. What amazing insights did I think would be uncovered?
I'll save you $9.72 (+s/h) and the 45 minutes it'll take you to read this. Here goes... Unless you were raised by wolves, it's pretty likely you've heard of the Golden Rule. Ok, now think about how this rule can be applied to all of your business dealings. That's it - you got it!
Whew! Now that you have an extra $9.72 in your pocket and 45 minutes of free time, go practice that Golden Rule by treating your kids/grandkids/neighbors to some ice cream.
Return to the Golden Rule.......2004-09-15
In a recent newspaper, in one day ... Enron chief pleads not guilty, Adelphia execs found guilty, no retrial in stock scandal ... and this was just the front page of the business section. On that same page, I noted the use of the phrase, "ethically amoral." Have we finally reached a point where we can construct such phrases? Corruption, moral relativism, the meaning of "is," have you had enough?
If you are looking for some insights into the problem and perhaps an alternative approach, here's your book, There's No Such Thing as "Business" Ethics. Maxwell writes, "...There's only ethics." Maxwell is right, and through interesting stories and common sense he argues for the adoption of the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you would like to be treated.
I read this book in hopes to validate my own research for my book, Swapping Lies! I felt that perhaps my call for a return of honor to the workplace was a bit too much, too naive. I was surprised to read that I am not the only one who feels this way. Maxwell is calling for the Golden Rule! Many will consider the Golden Rule a bit naïve in today's world, yet it is principle that successfully guides us in our business endeavors. A principled and focused leader is not naïve. In fact they are a constant source of strength and confidence to all. Spend just an hour to read this book. It may change you and your company.
Golden Rule as the General Guideline for Ethics.......2004-04-15
Book Overview:
This is a motivating, short, and easy to read book that tries to persuade the reader to adopt and apply the Golden Rule to their life as the ethical standard. Although the title of this book could mislead and create the wrong impression that it is intended to be read by businesspersons, this book can be used by anyone, since the general purpose is to apply the Golden Rule not only to the business environment but also to the personal life of the readers.
The book will generate great results and deep impact in the life of those persons, whom regardless of their social status or occupation, find themselves lost or disoriented regarding to their ethics standards. Throughout examples and real life stories in several aspects, the author illustrates his points and creates consciousness among the readers. At the end of each of the seven chapters, readers will find four to six straightforward questions that will help them look inside themselves and reflect what they have just read.
The author starts the book by citing ethical issues that have been creating concern in our society. Afterward, he focuses in the benefits and the importance of the Golden Rule. Subsequently, readers will find valuable tips of how to start thinking and applying this concept, which give introduction to other concept known as character. In chapter 5, the book encloses five factors that are considered to be the deceivers for people to follow an appropriate ethic path. Later, in the following chapter, the Dr. John C. Maxwell persuades readers to follow eight of his suggestions of how people can develop strong character in order to pursue golden opportunities. Finally, the author invites the readers to pursue the Golden Rule instead of the "Real Gold" by adopting five practices.
The Golden Rule works, This Book Falls Short.......2004-03-02
The application of the Golden Rule to our everyday lives is something that we can all agree is good. John Maxwell does a good job or defining the golden rule, its worldwide acceptance, and how we can apply it to our everyday. It was more like a walk down memory lane; to a time when a teacher or mentor first explained the concept to us. However I do have a few concerns with Mr. Maxwell's book. First there might need to be a better job at researching Fletcher thoughts on Relativism...in his book he labels Fletcher as the father of mordern day Realativism...quoting (or rather misquoting) Fletcher's statement that love can justify anything. I am in not postition to defend Fletcher, for I am not that familiar with his work, however he does not just use the term love. Rather he uses the term Agape Love, coming from the ancient Greek...the highest and purest form of love...one that God would have for us, a term any minister or pastor of the Christian Faith would know very well. Second after page 86 the book get repediative and seems to get off track. This links to my last issue with the book and why it gets a bit off track, as it turns into an advertisement for Mr. Maxwell's corporation, the last several pages are nothing but adverstisements asking you to visit their web site for free character quiz and then taking you down a road of Buy...buy...buy our products. Not what I expected and was somewhat disappointed. In short taking some know concepts, putting a somewhat of a new spin on them and then publishing to add another book to the list of those authored. Part of the disappointment is that I know this book could be better.

A must to learn about personality profiles and human interaction!.......2007-01-31
This book is GREAT! I have referenced this book many times. As an oral surgeon in private practice and an international lectlurer, I deal with all different personality types regarding people and I also have a staff with various personality profiles. I have virtually no staff issues any more and my case acceptance is through the roof.
By examining the 4 basic types (DISC), you will be able to understand how to interact with people in ways you never though possible. For all people this stuff is powerful! You will have a greater acceptance of what you need from others and you will find your every day interactions with friends, family and spouse tremendously improved. You gain a deep understading of how others think and respond. In sales for example, your selling rate will go up exponentially.
This is a must read for people interaction!

If you believe that getting along with others is the universal key to success, then this book is important reading. If, on the other hand, you don't believe that getting along with others is important, then it's even more important to read this book. While working for a major information services company, our management team believed so strongly in Tony Alessandra's message we not only gave copies of this book to more than 200 of our sales representatives, but also brought Tony to one of our sales meetings to reinforce the message face-to-face. If you have any questions about Tony Alessandra, feel free to email me at adamleft@webspan.net
Book Description
So what is schmoozing? According to Webster's unabridged dictionary, schmoozing is a Yiddish word that means to chat or to converse idly. But today there is a common misconception that the word has come to suggest a con or trickery. It's not.
Schmoozing is the Golden Rule at full throttle. It's a thrill and an art form that encourages people to say, "you've made my day" instead of demanding "make my day". It's a technique for turning others on, not taking others on. A schmoozer is someone who talks to people as if they really mattered-and they do!
Read by Penn Jillette, who has been called the most wired magician on this planet, and is the more gregarious half of Penn & Tellerthe world's most famous magic duo.

Good schmoozing tips...........2007-03-09
The book is funny and it provides good schmoozing tips for you to try. I agree and would actually try 70% of the authors ideas/tips...and I think you do get better service, freebies, discounts when you do some of these things. The rest of his tips were too bold and out there for me to even attempt. Oh and towards the end of the book, he goes off and starts talking about personal issues and what he did to get through them....I was like 'Yadi yadi...lets move on' and skipped those pages. Overall the book was entertaining and would probably pass it along to friends.
ummmm.......2007-01-11
Bought the audio version on Penn's recommendation from his web site.
It is pretty weak. Some good points but not worth it to me. You get some schmoozing stuff then it quickly rambles off into personal relationships etc. Fine but not what I bought it for.
Ewwww!.......2005-07-29
The advice he gives is totally absurd! If a guy came to where I was working and greeted me with "Hey Good Lookin!" and handed me a cheap teddy bear, I'd think he was a sexual predator!
Maybe this stuff works in some places, but in the Midwest, you'd really creep people out. I mean..."hey Good Lookin'"? Ewww!
Schmooze Me?.......2005-05-26
I loved The Golden Rule of Schmoozing, The Authentic Practice of Treating Others Well, by comedian and author Aye Jaye. In fact, I enjoyed the book so much that after borrowing it from my local library, I went out and purchased it. This is unusual for me, as I rarely even keep books I have read through.
The Golden Rule of Schmoozing reminds me of Dale Carnegie on steroids. It's an entertaining, easy-read book filled with examples of how to lay on schmooze anytime, anywhere. I'd have to say that the purpose of schmoozing is to just enhance the quality of life; to make The Road more bearable, if not enjoyable. Schmoozing is all about respect, being nice and taking the extra step in relationships.
I liked the way Aye Jaye defines schmoozing in such a positive light: "Schmoozing is The Golden Rule at full throttle." "It's a skill and an art form that encourages people to say, "You've made my day..." "A schmoozer is someone who talks to people as if they really mattered..." To my mind, this book reminds us that what goes around, eventually comes around. Well-placed schmooze can result in good Karma and good fortune, albeit random, but I'd take random over nothing!
One thing that threw me was the Foreword written by Penn and Teller. Not being a fan, I was glad that it was short. It didn't even hint at the quality of content to come.
The extensive Table of Contents illustrates the far-ranging arenas for schmooze.

Chapter 15: The ABCs of Kid-Schmoozing
Chapter 16: Teen Schmoozing Saving the Rebels Without a Clue
Chapter 17: Schmooze Yourself to Good Health
Chapter 18: Oozing Schmooze on Yourself Proactive Inner Thinking
Chapter 19: Relationships are Everything We're all in this together
Chapter 20: Schmoozing Friends and Neighbors
Chapter 21: Tricky Schmicky Schmooze
Chapter 22: The Name Schmooze
Chapter 23: Winning by Grinning Schmooze
I particularly enjoyed Aye Jaye's examples, rendered from his own life experience and those of friends and acquaintances, which drive home the point of each chapter. It was also fun to learn of the unintended (and sometimes intended) reciprocating schmooze by schmooze-recipients.
I've learned that even shy and introverted people can schmooze. This book enables the charm and charisma in otherwise inhibited people, by explaining how natural it is and illustrating the positive effects on both the schmoozer and "schmoozee". If more people were aware of the schmooze-effect it would lead to happier and more satisfying relationships across the board.
This book is recommended for all.

2005 Writers Notes Book Award Winner.......2005-05-18
Successful leaders know that they in effect work for their subordinates. They organize, position, and service the needs of their staff to optimize production. Included in this behavior are listening skills that incorporate the very best of what is offered and monitors the overall pulse of the group. If you've ever worked for a boss who circulates edicts via interoffice memo and shuts the door, you quickly learn how not to manage a group. Listening Leaders discusses ten simple principles that every manager should but unfortunately does not know. Only the successful leaders do.
Leaders should listen up.......2005-03-01
Listening Leaders breaks new ground in terms of informing leaders and potential leaders on what it takes to become effective on a long-term basis. Written in extremely reader-friendly style and dripping with anecdotes and mini-case histories throughout its sparkling ten chapters, Listening Leaders offers 10 simple golden rules to listen, lead and succeed. As the author's state in the introduction, "Effective listening and effective leadership are inseparable."
Prior to this book, it is my understanding that no book on leadership devotes more than 2% to 4% of its verbiage on the important and crucial topic of listening. Yet, as the authors point out, "effective listening is imperative to anyone who desires to lead cohesive, productive, and significant teams and organizations." Towards that end, Listening Leaders becomes a must-read if you aspire to leadership in any capacity. If you work with others, and supervise, coach, manage, persuade, or otherwise influence those with whom you work, this book belongs on your shelf.
How to Listen Your Way to Leadership Success.......2004-10-26
The belief that listening is a key ingredient to success as a leadership sits on the same pedestal as Motherhood, Apple Pie, and The Flag. However, just because we respect the importance of listening doesn't mean that we know what to do...or do it very well. Now we have a guidebook.
Steil and Bommelje are widely respected as experts in the fine skills of effective listening, so they are well-qualified to write this book. Their credentials are impeccable.
The book presents ten "golden rules" of listening leadership, organized as Preparation, Principles, and Practices...which lead to taking Meaningful Action. The authors nicely tie together good listening skills and leadership, showing how each skill contributes to and supports the other. Effective listening enables you to be a good leader, and effective leadership encompasses good listening.
Page after page is filled with teaching, practical advice, and examples of how real leaders use their listening skills to enhance their work. I was struck by the broad variety of leaders cited and with what they had to share through the authors. The wise range of people used as examples in the book serves to reinforce the universality of the principles. The way the teachings of the exemplary leaders are intertwined with the balance of the text enriches the readability of the book: it's almost storytelling-a highly readable novel or collection of vignettes.
Adding value to the book is a list of the cited leaders, providing each individual's title and organization and the chapter where the leader's advice or experience is shared. The book also provides a list of resources for further research and a helpful index. Summaries at the end of each chapter make it even easier to acquire the vast knowledge included in these pages.
Recommended for current-and future-leaders who seek to strengthen their listening skills and their leadership effectiveness.
Great leaders are effective listeners........2004-10-07
The authors have successfully established an integral relationship between effective listening and effective leadership. Insights, advice and strategies supplied by numerous contributors testify to a key premise of the book...Effective listening and effective leadership are inseparable. This complete and connected approach to Listening Leadership Development makes an excellent resource. It delivers what it promises........ Rules and tools for listening leaders:
to thrive on in their professional and personal lives, to develop other listening leaders and to build listening organizations
A listening golden nugget!.......2004-09-24
I am enjoying, "Listening Leaders". It is laid out like a well crafted sermon. The points are clear. The use of review is instructive. The illustrations are illuminating. This is not just a self-help book, it is a self-teaching book. For learning not to take place, the reader would purposely have to put a stop to it.

A great overview of the basics of mangement, mid-west style. .......2007-01-03
The Golden Rule is not new (Treat people as you would like to be treated) but many a company would benefit from rediscovering it. This book covers John's company and his mid-west-Jack-Welsh type approach. In it, he explains how he created a company that focuses on the right things using an empowered workforce.
Short (161 small pages) and sweet, it is highly recommended for all team lead / new managers. Experienced managers will also enjoy the content but will most likely be familiar with many of the concepts.
Just a few of the many quips in the book: Every person in a management role should be a leader. Don't cram philosophy down throats. Instead make sure people know before joining the team that they won't last if they don't fit. Leaders who allow renegades to mix things up are putting the integrity of the company at stake. A manager who is losing control of his team is losing touch with his team. Good management is 80% people orientation, 15% learned skills, 5% gut feel. Approach with a smile; lend an ear, not an eye. Trust supervisors to catch infractions. I do not know one good leader who stayed in his office. All good leaders must make an effort to interact with as many departments as possible. Think of your meetings as a quick information huddle up. As a manager you shouldn't be in a series of meetings, you should be working and meeting people.
Mr. McConnell provides valuable insight! GREAT BOOK!!.......2004-11-16
Companies either fall in 1 of 2 catagories. They are either great at servicing their customers or great at taking care of their staff. Rarely do you find a company/individual who can do both well. Mr. McConnell is the only person who has proven he can do both very well. The book is so informative that you won't be able to put it down until you've finished it! Much of the information he provides in the book you'll find a way to apply it to your current position. In reading the book you'll want to work harder at just being a better person to everyone you meet.

Even Motivators Need Motivating! .......2007-07-15
In 2006 I had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Herbert Harris for my syndicated radio show, "Ashe'!" Mr. Harris sent me a copy of his popular book to acquaint me with his work. Not only did Mr. Harris prove to be a dynamic interview subject, his book also was a succinct guide for getting and staying on the road to success. "Twelve Universal Laws of Success" serves both the neophyte seeker and the adept. I personally discovered the restorative power of "The Twelve Universal Laws of Success." As an artist, lecturer, producer, and ordained minister who has built a 30 year career motivating others via mass media, I faced my own critical challenge that threatened to halt my life's work. Lifelong epilepsy and severe asthma became progressively disabling conditions for me in 2006.
I had the nerve to be surprised to learn how many people were anxious to see my downfall. Even close family members encouraged me to give up my Internet-based radio station, my syndicated radio show, my TV show, my online magazine, my performing, lecturing, ministering, and motivational column. In essence, to give up my life's work. I was laughed at, told to go on welfare or become a receptionist. I carried "Twelve Universal Laws" in my bag, reading it and re-reading it as I traveled on buses, trains, and especially on my way to and from doctor appointments and sitting in hospital emergency rooms. It kept me focused. I tuned out every naysayer.
I was also blessed to learn that Mr. Harris lives what he teaches. His uplifting phone chats gave me a snapshot into the workings of his own everyday life, inspiring me to truly master my own success. While healing I finished writing my own book.
Now in 2007 I am fully recovered, my radio station has expanded, my TV show is coming to the net and other markets, I am hosting/producing an additional syndicated radio show, and I am lecturing and teaching in the U.S. and abroad. And I am proud to say I received "Success Master" workshop presenter certification through Herbert Harris' LIFESKILL INSTITUTE, which reinforces the twelve principles in the book through daily application and teaching.
And yes, I still often carry the book around with me as a motivational read.
"The Twelve Universal Laws of Success" is the gift that keeps on giving.

Glowing Book Review.......2007-07-11
Twelve Universal Laws of Success reviewed in July 2007 issue of the Network Marketing Business Journal
Twelve Universal Laws book considered heir of Napoleon Hill
In his second, expanded edition of The Twelve Universal Laws of Success international author and syndicated newspaper columnist, Herbert Harris dedicates an overview to the network marketing industry. The book, however, is universal in its appeal to entrepreneurs of every variety and anyone who wants to improve their lives, prospects for employment, and ability to get things done.
Harris was involved in network marketing with such legendary companies as National Safety Association (NSA) and the Bahamian Diet. As a syndicated newspaper columnist, his work is distributed to over 200 newspapers throughout the United States. He has touched thousands of people seeking positive change in their lives through "Thoughts for Success," his nationally syndicated newspaper column. Harris is an articulate, experienced, informative media guest who is in great demand as a public speaker, consultant and personal development facilitator.
He also has the distinction of probably being the last person to be admitted to practice law in the state of New York without attending law school. He did his law office clerkship, taught himself law and passed the New York State Bar Exam without ever attending law school.
Harris created Achievement Motivation, a practical college curriculum that substantially cut the freshman dropout rate. He also wrote the book How to Make Money in Music, a highly popular guidebook to the music industry. The first edition of the Twelve Universal Laws of Success (1997) has received international acclaim and was published in China, Italy, Malaysia and Mexico.
Glowing praise for this self-help book
The 200-page, paperback book includes such topics as: signals of poor self-image; ways to improve your self image; overcoming obstacles, fear and worry; developing self-discipline; making a success plan that works; a daily formula for achieving your goals; principles of wealth building; improving relationships with other people; overcoming procrastination; and how to be persistent and get results. The second edition, published in 2004, provides an easy-to-read blueprint for personal retooling necessary to embark on a new career that is practical and spiritually fulfilling.
The book is a well-organized treatment of the basic principles of personal success. Self-help approaches are organized into 12 universal laws that are each based on Biblical principles. "Bible-based but not religious," as the book is described by one reader, it refines self-help concepts into action principles.
Dubbed "the 21st century version of "Think and Grow Rich" and "clearly an intellectual heir" of Napoleon Hill's popular works, The Twelve Universal Laws of Success presents the laws that people must know to be successful in a reader-friendly, concise action format. One pleased reader said,
"The section of the book on making success plans that get desired results puts it a cut above the other success books. The daily formula for achieving goals finally gives a step-by-step approach that anyone can follow."
Another reviewer raved, "This book is a five-star find that should be added to everyone's collection of motivational treasures. The author uses spiritual references that relate to each success principle he discusses. I found the sections on vision, purpose and goals especially useful. I would recommend it to anyone looking to make positive changes in their lives."
"As I read the 12 laws" another Harris follower described, "I sometimes felt like I was being taken on a tour around a statue. By seeing more perspectives, I could understand the holism of the statue much better...or in this case, what is required for success. So don't be surprised at what will seem like a little redundancy in the rules. Some of them are really axioms of other rules...but ones that you might not have figured out on your own."
There is a summary and study guide at the end of each chapter that helps the reader learn, retain, and master the material. "If you apply yourself to the study guides," writes one book devotee, "your benefit from the book will be enormous."
One final reviewer enthused, "I have read most of the well-known `success' books available and this book is truly up there with the best. This book is highly under-rated. No where else will you find such a straightforward explanation of the laws of success."

Twelve Universal Laws of Success
Dr. Tami Brady- TCM Reviews
We all want to be successful. We all start out with great dreams and amazing fantasies that we tuck away hoping that they will someday come true. Too often, though, we watch our lives simply slip away. In the end, we feel disillusioned, unhappy with our lives, and unable to see where things went so very wrong.
Unfortunately, success isn't an inherent right. Dreams are not somehow magically manifested by thinking good thoughts while eating nachos and watching television. No one is going to create success for you. Success is something only you can define and work towards in your own way.
Reaching your goals, following your dreams, and being successful actually takes effort and a lot of heard work. Not only do you have to have a direction or a vision of what you want from life but you have to focus your intent, your energy, and your positive thought on that specific goal. Then, you have to follow through on and stay true to your plans.
The Twelve Universal Laws of Success is a no non-sense guide to success. The author sets out a realistic plan for goal setting and living for one's vision that is both straight forward and comprehensive. Most of all, these laws help the reader find his or her own personal path to success.
Twelve Universal Laws of Success
Vianna Renaud- TCM Reviews
In this book Herbert Harris leads us on an inspirational journey towards greater self-awareness and fulfillment through his twelve universal laws. Intertwined with Biblical and metaphysical principals, his aim is to empower you as the reader to reach your full potential. In easy to follow chapters with the main theme of reaching personal success, he suggests action techniques for getting your desired results. Within the multitude of topics looked at, Mr. Harris focuses on his Twelve Laws of Thought, Change, Vision, command, Magnetism, Focus, Action, Value, Relationships, Supply, Persistence, and Truth.
This self-help book is presented in a very logical manner that makes it easy to use. With concise and insightful chapters that end with a helpful study guide, the reader has the chance for further self-exploration. I particularly enjoyed the sections on developing positive thinking, the seven point formula for eliminating worry, and creating affirmations to live by. The formula for Achieving Your Goals, the Nine Point Formula for Situation Resolution, and Mastering the Riddle of Survival, amongst other sections, I found to be particularly suited to today's fast paced world. With these intuitive points, Mr. Harris provides an entertaining read with everything necessary to help guide you in
your quest of turning your life around. So, simply stated, let's get started!
Excellent book.......2006-07-05
I am very pleased with this purchase and have promoted it to relatives, friends and associates. It has been a significant source of guidance and inspiration as I continue to grow my business. Highly recommended reading!

Book Description
The innermost core-the veritable heart-of the teachings of Jesus, is the message of service and square-dealing, which means that it is, uncontrovertibly, one of human brotherhood. All this has been said before, you say. To be sure it has. But it is falling today, as never before, on listening ears. -from "Service: Human and Divine" An unusual business and spiritual autobiography, this 1923 book is American Midwestern entrepreneur Arthur Nash's life story, from his birth in post-Civil War Indiana and his upbringing amidst a confused religious environment to his embrace of Christianity and his building of a successful Cincinnati clothing company upon the laws of kindness and fellowship espoused by Jesus. A prominent Freemason, Nash, who died in 1927, dedicated his life to the idea of human achievement fueled by a higher power, and this heartfelt work embraces and celebrates that philosophy.
