Excellent book.......2007-10-07
I purchased three books prior to our trip to Germany. This was by far the best for what we wanted to do. We were in Heidelberg for work, and had to stay fairly close, so the ability to plan day trips to other cities was perfect for us. The directions were clear and almost always completely accurate.
Daytrips Germany.......2007-08-12
Useful but boring, the same format over and over. The 2002 edition I just received is really out of date. Maps are less useful since part of the print becomes part of the binding. Rick Steve's book, Germany and Austria 2007, is so much more enjoyable to read.
Fantastic memories.......2007-08-05
We, my wife and I, found the daytrips very informative. How else would we have found the famous "Rauchbier" in Bamberg? It alone was worth the price of the book. We went to several of the trips explained in the book during our three week stay in Bavaria. I will definitely take it again if we can make another trip to Germany.
Everything you need to know about Germany........2007-06-20
We took 3 travel guides with us on our tour of Germany and this is the one we used the most. It has everything that you need to know. What trains to use, what to see, how to get there, where to eat, where to stay. As a first time traveler to Germany we found the info in this book useful and easy to use. I highly recommend it!
Daytrips Germany.......2007-05-11
Unfortunately this book arrived after I left for my trip so I didn't do me any good at all. It would have been handy however.

Customer Reviews:
Excelent book.......2007-10-17
Adventures of a currency trader is very enjoyable to read and educational as well. I read it in a couple of days, could not stop reading. Among all the literature available for trading, and trading the Forex market in particular, this book is a genuine pearl. Probably every currency trader recognices himself in same way, I did!
Congratulations Rob !
Misadventures of a Currency Trader might be more appropriate........2007-10-17
I've been trading the forex for about 15 months and I think this book has addressed every mistake I've made (and there have been plenty!) It's comforting in a way, to know that most of the traders out there have made the same mistakes. If you've read other books on trading, this book will be a refreshing change because it's told in a story format yet you'll still learn from it. Very enjoyable read...I highly recommend it.
Good for a beginner like me!.......2007-10-17
This is the first book I've read in this area. Easy to understand the concepts, ideas of the writer. Actually, it's very helpful to me, as a beginner. I am still trading demo and have not go live yet.
Funny, Smart and Engaging.......2007-10-11
This was not my intentional purchase...it was one of those "purchase with purchase" pitches, I bit. So glad that I did. What a great insight into the minds of wannabe traders, novice traders and those of us that have managed to hang on by our fingernails for a period of time...all sharing a common thread. Rob Booker has nailed the mindset and the motivation that every forex trader experiences. This is a quick read that all traders, no matter how experienced, will relate to on some level.
Good Read, but only tells what can be wrong ..........2007-10-06
It is in a story form and lets you read quickly. Telling you about how a novice can get everything wrong, but then how to make it right was not cover in detail, probably making it too easy. The man in the book more or less lost his account in the first few trades, very typical, but then he can do it right and start making money soon afterward, not very typical .... my understanding.
Overall, fun to read, but I don't learn much from it.

Nice.......2007-09-15
Excellent book to give you an idea of Ecuador and help you plan your trip.
Superb Guidebook.......2007-08-07
I went on a one-week long trip in Quito and its surroundings. It was my first trip to South America, also to a country where I do not speak the language fluently. This one had accurate descriptions of places I wanted to see, and it also gave precise directions on how to get to the places that are outside Quito. I have visited extensively the capital and other near areas, and from little-known corner eateries to magical trees, everything is noted in this book. Lonely Planet never failed to amaze me again in this one.
New 7th Edition Offers Important Updated Information.......2006-12-15
I purchased the latest edition of this book shortly after it's release on November, 30 and was very impressed with it's significant improvements over the 6th edition. I bought the previous book 2 years ago and, even at that time, was struck by how out of date and inaccurate some of it's information was. My wife grew up in Ecuador, still has family living there and goes back every year to visit (I go there with her every 2 years). So we, especially she, have a pretty good idea about what is happening in the country in terms of politics, prices and other information relevant to travellers. But we were disappointed how the previous book barely mentioned the major impact of dollarization on the Ecuadorian economy and the substantial increase in prices it has caused. So much so that most Ecuadorian families now have at least one or more family members working overseas in order to send money home just so the family can survive.
Fortunately, the 7th edition provides much more up to date information on this subject and others. Of course, prices for travellers are also more accurate since this edition is "hot off the presses". The book does a good job of covering all regions of the country - the Andes mountains, the Pacific coast and the Amazon rainforest. Lonely Planet, as usual, includes not only the big cities and major tourist attractions. But also small towns and other "off the beaten path" places that may be of interest for those exploring the tremendous natural beauty and cultural diversity that Ecuador has to offer.
Lonely Planet is still among my favorite publisher of travel guides. But, this book, like many LP guides, seems to have moved away from the free-spirited, adventurous approach to travel that characterized it's early years. Nowadays, the guides seem much more inclined to politically correct lectures - no hitchhiking, no intoxicants, be a good little backpacker, blah, blah, blah. Of course, I understand the importance of being respectful towards the environment and local culture, making safe and responsible decisions, etc. But I also feel that LP's writers sometimes have their own political agenda to push and take an overly self-righteous tone that is more indicitative of Western values than Ecuadorian ones. Heck, I'm part of an Ecuadorian family myself now and I know that they would find alot of LP's advice and commentary about "how to behave" to be exaggerated and ridiculous. Ecuadorians are generally a very laid back and fun loving people. Of course, you should be respectful of Ecuador's beautiful nature and diverse cultures. But also relax, enjoy yourself and don't let LP's excessively "politically correct" attitude bog you down.
Still the 7th edition is a big improvement over the 6th and I recommend it for those travelling to Ecuador in the near future.
6th edition 3.5 stars... time for update, guys.......2006-03-26
I'm a Lonely Planet addict who knew better than to blindly buy this edition (if you order one now -6th edition, as I did, you'll get 2003 info), but addicts usually are not known for using their heads.
Quito is rather different nowadays, bus lines are new, and there are different security issues.
At least I can say that 6th ed authors err on the side of caution (eg it's risky to expect to book last minute space on Galapagos boats; or take a taxi at night even if you're going one block), but the exceptions to these dicta are too great to accept that this edition is up-to-date. The errors in museum hours and bus info (Mitad del Mundo, for one) need revision.
Worst thing about ANY Lonely Planet is their system of maps. Reader never gets text of an attraction or restaurant or hotel referenced to map location. AND if you need reading glasses, just forget about using these maps when you're in a dark taxi or dark restaurant (often the places you need to read them). Bringing a magnifying glass is not always easy.
Another grouse... while authors want to tell the traveler that the most conveniences are in the Mariscal Sucre area (gringo landia), they don't leave it at that. They list almost no restaurants & resources outside that area. I thank the authors for including my fringe area hotel in the book, for I can walk to grungy backpacker-ville any time I want to, BUT there is a true pressure towards a kind of "this is where you will stay because most travelers do." Get off the beaten path, fellas!
So, thanks for the tips, but I'm glad I used travelwise.com and other resources. Lonely Planet system may be a thing of the past soon.
You can take it with you.......2006-02-24
I've used LP before for trips. Once you get the book, you are invited to go on-line for up-dates. There you are directed to "The Thorn Tree" forum. I used it just about every day to keep well-informed and prepare for the trip. The guide is an easy ready and full of useful information. Prior uses were very accurate.

Customer Reviews:
Easter Island or Bust.......2007-08-24
I usually don't like the LPs but this one worked out great. I left it in Santiago with my sister. The thing about travel books is that they are just guides to give you ideas. Never go by the book, it makes for a boring life. The best adventures I have every had in South America were the ones that were not planned that goes for life too. The Easter Island part was good because it gave alot of info about the history and culture and gave directions to the museum so that we could get even more info if needed. I also like the Spanish vocab in the back because my Spanish is Mexican border now and guess what a sopa in SA is a bread and here in border land it is a soup. winter in Santiago you want soup not bread. Buy it and see the world the best thing in life is to follow you heart and dreams.
Great Guide To Cheap Accomodations.......2007-08-12
thanks to lonely planet we found chilestay apartments at www.chilestay.com an inexpensive alternative to a hotel. also, lonely planet provides a comprehensive and updated information about places to visit and enjoy.
not so helpful after all.......2007-04-21
I have used LP guides all over the world, mostly for the maps and hostel listings...so when I went to Chile, I happily bought the Chile guide. I threw it out two weeks later. The maps were incorrect again and again, information was just plain wrong, the listings unhelpful. We ended up walking all over one town looking for a hostel that had been misplaced on a map, we missed buses, and were shocked at how horrible "the best hostel in [a certain town]" was. Fine adventure and all, but after I trashed the LP, we used my friends' Rough Guide instead (which thankfully had correct info) and we saved our time and enjoyed ourselves for the rest of our trip.
found it useful.......2007-03-11
We went on a Princess cruise, so only used the guite for Santiago, Chile, Valparaiso, Porte Montte, Punta Arenas, Ushuaia, Falklands, montevideo, and BA. Wew found it useful. Did not really use the hotel or restuarant guides.
One of the best guide books for Chile.......2007-03-06
I travel in Chile often and extensively and can vouch for the quality of this guide book, especially this new edition. There's a lot of good guide books out there and every one has a different perspective, but I find LP's to include the broadest spectrum of information, for people on all different budgets with all different types of travel tastes, styles, and expectations. This edition just came out so you can trust that the info is up to date, and I agree with a lot of their recommendations of special hotels, restaurants, and off the trail places to check out. The southern chapters are excellent, in particular.
If you are heading to Chile, I urge you to pick up a copy of the poetry of their national hero, the great Nobel Laureate pacifist Pablo Neruda, subject of Il Postino / Postman and so much more. The Essential Neruda: Selected Poems has been called by many as the best introductions and best books of his even if you already love and know him. Check it out. You will experience Chile differently after reading his words of passions. You will experience life differently. For more info, check out redpoppy dot net, a non-profit dedicated to furthering his commitment to humanitarianism and spreading his poetry around the globe.
Making a difference in this world, one poem at a time.

Customer Reviews:
The most easy to use, comprehensive course available.......2006-12-27
The most easy to use, comprehensive course available
Go from beginning to advanced levels in one course
Speak the language, not just pass the test
Puzzles, games stories, and music
Activities for all types of learners
No boring rote memorization
You-are-there adventures
Memory aids
Diglot weaves
This course really works. I've wanted to learn a foreign language for a while, and I'm glad I found this. The first lesson starts out:
"It's just before dawn. You and your companion are intelligence officers assigned to parachute onto Isla de Providencia, a tiny island in the western Caribbean. It has been seized by invaders from an unknown place of origin. Your mission is to discover why this tiny island was singled out for capture. What is there on the island that is of such value? A submarine is to pick you up in ten days at midnight at the north point of the island."
The people on the island speak Spanish. As you continue you meet people who help you to learn the language. You do Puzzles, games stories, and music etc. etc. And then it reads "The adventure continues" and tells you what happens next. For example the invaders are searching the area so you are told to go into a basement to hide and are given a note that says:
"Hidden on esta isla is a treasure of great value, one that may give wealth and fame. The invaders seek this treasure to steal it. The invaders do not know the location to this treasure. Since knowledge of its location is closely tied to and understanding of the Spanish language and culture, chances art that they will not fid it. Hidden in this room is una mapa that will help you in your search for the treasure. To learn the location lf el mapa, complete the puzzle that begins on the next page."
After you finish then "The adventure continues"
Mormon and Pyschic based program.......2005-10-19
I was shocked to find out that this program is filled with Mormon theology. It is based on such theories as Suggestology, which is listed under Pychic studies in Amazon search. This is just not a program that I think any child or adult should expose themselves to.
Here is a list of the other theories this method is based on and where the information can be found:
Suggestopedy by Loranov
Total Physical Response by Asher
Silent Way by Gattengo
Comprehension Approach by Krashen
*As described in Dr. Blair's book Innovative Approaches to Language Teaching.
Innovation Meets Shoddy Production Values.......2004-04-09
Dr. Blair has gone out of his way to discover and invent unconventional methods for language learning. His Power-Glide course is a rich collection of fresh ideas, some of which should be suitable to any person's learning style.
The set comes with a thick course manual, slim academic guide, 9 audio CDs and one computer CD. The course consists of 160 or so lesson segments that build upon each other and get progressively harder.
Lesson 1 gets off to a good start, opening an adventure in which you are a secret agent sneaking into a strange island to solve a mystery. The language learning is woven into the story, but the story soon degenerates into a series of lame excuses for you to do an endless series of drills and exercises.
My biggest complaint about the product is the poor quality of the voice talent. Dr. Blair often seems to think we'd rather listen to his obvious American accent than to a native Spanish speaker. I'll avoid the temptation to make fun of the other voice actors (most of whom suspiciously have the same last name as the course creator). I'll go as far as saying the voices on the CDs quickly degenerate from (unintentionally) comical to unbearable.
They obviously saved some money by not bringing in professional voices, and the result is a shoddy, unprofessional-sounding package.
Power-Glide gets points for originality, and has a wealth of ideas for teachers. But as a consumer product, the awful audio gives it limited use, making it hard to justify the hefty price tag.
Book Description
In her twenties, journalist Sarah Macdonald backpacked around India and came away with a lasting impression of heat, pollution and poverty. So when an airport beggar read her palm and told her she would return to India—and for love—she screamed, “Never!” and gave the country, and him, the finger.
But eleven years later, the prophecy comes true. When the love of Sarah’s life is posted to India, she quits her dream job to move to the most polluted city on earth, New Delhi. For Sarah this seems like the ultimate sacrifice for love, and it almost kills her, literally. Just settled, she falls dangerously ill with double pneumonia, an experience that compels her to face some serious questions about her own fragile mortality and inner spiritual void. “I must find peace in the only place possible in India,” she concludes. “Within.” Thus begins her journey of discovery through India in search of the meaning of life and death.
Holy Cow is Macdonald’s often hilarious chronicle of her adventures in a land of chaos and contradiction, of encounters with Hinduism, Islam and Jainism, Sufis, Sikhs, Parsis and Christians and a kaleidoscope of yogis, swamis and Bollywood stars. From spiritual retreats and crumbling nirvanas to war zones and New Delhi nightclubs, it is a journey that only a woman on a mission to save her soul, her love life—and her sanity—can survive.
Customer Reviews:
Too much Holy, not enough Cow.......2007-09-21
I agree with other reviewers who have stated that the book reads as a fairly decent travelogue until Macdonald starts on this spin-the-wheel and find a new religion quest. Her visits to the various holy sites, ashrams and other spiritual experiences would have been better written if they were indeed from a journalistic perpesctive but her seeimngly shallow attempt, to within 2-6 days "test" a new religion gets pretty silly and monotonous given that she does it over and over again. If the book was a soul searching memoir, then it wuold need to be injected with ore feeling because it comes across as to cynical and even the times when she does seem to get serious just seem superficial.
I also find it interesting, as did another reviewer, that she didn't meet a single Indian that couldn't speak English properly - everyone she met seemed to be a caricature, not entirely real. To be fair, I've never been to India (was given this book in preparation for an upcoming trip to Dehli) so maybe it really is like that, but I think it cheapens her message when she goes to such extremes to mimic accents and make fun of people's styles of talking.
Much like the country.......2007-09-07
Sarah Macdonald did an amazing job of capturing some of hte paradoxes of India. Smart, well-written, and well-worth reading - particulalry if you feel any connection to the country. As an American who has visited, I can appreciate the perspective she offers. Holy Cow made me miss it even more.
Good News.......2007-07-07
I loved it. It starts as a travelogue and ends with a message of hope. Honoring the divinity of individual paths to the Divine is a much needed grace in this "my religion is better than yours" world. Open your mind and heart and experience this book. Plus, it's a great read!
Holy Cow: An Indian Adventure.......2007-05-11
The best reading I've ever encuntered on religions, life, and mores across India -- insightful, perceptive, and right on!
Holy Cow: An Indian Adventure.......2007-03-23
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was humourous while still reflective and it was wonderful to read how the main character learned to appreciate the Indian culture through her numerous investigations of the simplicities and complexities of the various religions and societal norms and mores of this rich and diverse land. I've passed it on to others and so far they are enjoying the book as well.

Customer Reviews:
One great benefit.......2006-06-14
I can't disgree with the reviewers who point out what this book isn't: thorough, detailed and specific.
Having taken two driving trips through Ireland, though, I'd like to suggest that the first time visitor could benefit greatly by taking some of these suggested drives.
Main reason? The reasonable scale of the drives. Ireland looks small and it can be a mistake to plan drives based only on how many miles a certain trip would be. It is very easy for a new visitor to plan a trip only to find that they are in the car for seven hours.
Go easy, plan realistic drives like the ones included here, and have fun!
DEFINITELY Drive Ireland on Your Own.......2006-04-13
This Best Loved Driving Tours Travel Guide is one of the best, if not the best, guidebook to use for planning your Ireland trip before you leave. There is a tremendous amount of useful driving material, it has quite a bit of information, and a number of different driving tours, it is convenient to carry with you or keep in the car. I read about a lot of attractions here that I couldn't find in other reputable publications, and found more details as well. The best way to go...and I learned through experience and the hard way....you want to fly into Dublin and head south, then west and north....and leave out of Shannon...the experience of the City first, with the hustle and bustle is GREAT!!...and then the calming of the countryside and the politness, kindness and friendliness of the Irish people will definitely fill your heart...and leave you with a good feeling.
Knowing What to Look For.......2002-07-05
This book is a wonderful resource with a person familiar with the type of tour and terrain one wants to travel, NOT for the first-time Ireland visitor. One must be comfortable with the road-marking system and road conditions of Ireland, and one must have a decent comprehension of what one wishes to accomplish during one's visit for this book to be of help at all. That having been said, for the person who is traveling back to Ireland because they just can't get enough of the lush landscape and the many, many things to do this book is a great asset and time-saver. It should never be used as the primary or ONLY resource, however, for visiting Ireland, but it does give one wonderful ideas on where to visit and how to plan a trip
Not very helpful.......2002-04-10
Since I was going to Ireland on a self-drive vacation, when I saw this book on the shelf I grabbed and bought it immediately. I studied the book before leaving the US, deciding that several of the tours suited my needs. What a disappointment, however, upon getting to Ireland and trying to actually use the book. Directions from the book itself were not very helpful, we got lost several times, only finding our way back using a regular road map. The book mentions Routes that have no signs posted anywhere, so it was hard to know if you were going the right way. I agree with the reviewer who pointed out that there was not nearly enough information about each suggested "stop" on the tours - hard to decide whether it was worth it or not to make the 10-mile detour to check things out. I could have also used some kind of description about the road conditions, such as if it was a mountain road, straight, or with many curves - those things definitely affected driving times.
Pretty pictures, but not much information.......2001-12-12
This book has some beautiful pictures to inspire you to visit Ireland (something that Lonely Planet, e.g., lacks), but has little else to recommend it. The information on where you should stop consists of about 5 sentences; not enough to help you decide if you want to stop or to assist you once you are there. We were in Ireland for 10 days; during that time, we found this guide useful for about 5 minutes, when we were trying to find Cliffs of Moher. Not a very good investment. For beautiful pictures at no cost, search the internet instead.
The two guide books I would recommend are Lonely Planet and the Blue Guide. (...) Finally, make sure you get a good map once in Ireland, if not before.e

Customer Reviews:
Not as good as other lonely plaent books.......2007-09-30
This book is thin and not as well done as other lonely planet books. For a trip to Kaua'i, I'd recommend another publisher's travel book. I purchased this book along with "the blue book" on Kaua'i. I found the blue book to be much more comprehensive as well as more entertaining to read.
Excellent Kauai guide book.......2007-06-09
I'm just back from my first (and not my last) trip to Kauai. I bought 7 Kauai travel guide books to plan my trip (yes, I was overly excited). Of the 7, this and one other were head and shoulders above the rest. I strongly recommend it.
Almost completely useless.......2007-01-10
Please relate to my comments on the other guidebook about Queensland.
Kauai Guidebook was not as deceiving as that one, may be because being so thin, we didn't expect very much from it, and... come on!!! Hawaii anyway!!
We got an address for a place to stay, the rest was decided either thanks to comments from colleagues who had been there already, or from the REAL guidebook series for Hawaii, the blue series. A colleague loaned it to us. At the beginning, being so used to Lonely Planet we thought we will sticked with it. Truth is we, never used it there, only the blue book which offers detailed descriptions, interesting comments and very useful maps.

Hernando Cortes and the fall of Tenochtitlán.......2001-04-29
This level two book has a controlled vocabulary of 700 words.
This book is good to read aloud. In fact, Transparent Language's "Language Now" cd-rom program has used this title as a reading selection
It is written as a diary of the secretary of Hernando Cortes. It is about Moctezuma and the fall of Tenochtitlán and the Aztec Empire. It gives a surprisingly unbiased perspective. It is to me very impressive that with such a limited vocabulary, that not only the story but the emotions can be conveyed so effectively.
It whetted my imagination to learn more about the Spanish Conquest and characters such as Malinche (Cortes' interpreter, secretary, mistress, who remains to this day a symbol of treachery to the Mexican people).

Incorrect information and generic tips.......2007-09-22
I found this book almost useless. It's publication date was 2004 and so a lot of information is outdated, which is why most travel books are published annually. If a book isn't going to be updated, they should avoid putting information in there that can become quickly outdated. For instance, they say gorilla permits in Uganda are $275, but the cost has risen twice since then and they are now $500, so the traveler that read this book and decided to go see gorillas would be in for a nasty surprise.
Some other incorrect information may be less important, but really embarrassing. For instance, it calls Dar Es Salaam the capital of Tanzania. It is the largest city and referred to as the "commercial capital", but Dodoma is the (political) capital. It can be a bit confusing, but you expect travel books to get this stuff right. Also, the book states that Churchill called Uganda the pearl of Africa, but it was actually Hemingway. Shoddy work, especially for something published by Fodor's.
Finally, the information is generic. I found this information, and much more, for free on the internet. For instance, it talks about the Great Migration in East Africa happening in a clockwise fashion annually. Well, that doesn't help you know where you need to be if you want to see the Migration and are there in May, for instance. However, there are sites on the internet that show the migration circuit and you can choose where to be at what time of year. All the dos and don'ts and packing lists and entry requirements are also easily found on the internet. And the list of National Parks in many of the countries is lacking. For Tanzania and Uganda it misses a bunch of them. As far as I can tell, there is pretty much no reason to use this book at all. Just read the abundant info on the internet and visit Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree to ask questions of travellers who have been there and people who live there.
Fodor's Hire an Editor!.......2007-08-05
Advice from the author: "take pets to the kennel...buy snacks and gum...check the weather". This "book" is full of the obvious with little help for those planning a safari. To be fair the information on photography (they suggest that you bring lots of film) and their information about self drive safaris (they tell you that this is a safari where you drive yourself) is humorous. A section on "Kahki Fever" where the author warns unsuspecting safari tourists about the dangers of AIDS when having an expected sexual encounter with your ranger on safari is simply over the top. Fodor's Hire and Editor...Amazon Hire a Reader!
Skimpy Look at African Wildlife Sites.......2006-11-03
The book is thin and the information included is even thinner. Hardly worth the purchase price.
Great information to help you start planning.......2006-05-15
My sister and I are planning a trip to Southern Africa in the Spring...although we had both been to South Africa before we did not really know where to start with planning a 'safari' outside of SA...This book was a perfect overview of the different countries, the game you can plan to see, the tourist and weather seasons, and the differences between different types of safaris...we supplemented the information in this book with other sources...but this was a GREAT place to start off...get a good comfort level with the options in Africa...I would definitely reccommend!
A $10 rip off.......2004-09-16
Slim ,is not the word for this small 190 page "pocket book".
Totaly lacking in any comparative information about companies or there offerings.Did not help this ,first time traveler to Africa, at all, in deciding where or how to go on safari.Got more information in a hour "Googling" Safari.Took about an hour to read.Wish I had just "skimmed"it at a book store.Buyer beware. First grade level.EG "Drink lots of water when it is hot" or "best way to avoid malaria is do not get bitten".Written for a person who has never travled anywhere.Amazon has always imposed some "quality control" and this is the first time I have felt totaly "ripped off" after buying one of their books.
