When Richard Foster began writing Celebration of Discipline more than 20 years ago, an older writer gave him a bit of advice: "Be sure that every chapter forces the reader into the next chapter." Foster took the advice to heart; as a result, his book presents one of the most compelling and readable visions of Christian spirituality published in the past few decades. After beginning with a simple observation--"Superficiality is the curse of our age.... The desperate need today is not for a greater number of intelligent people, or gifted people, but for deep people"--Foster's book moves to explain the disciplines people must cultivate in order to achieve spiritual depth. In succinct, urgent, and sometimes humorous chapters, Foster defines a broad range of classic spiritual disciplines in terms that are lucid without being too limiting and offers advice that's practical without being overly prescriptive. For instance, after describing meditation as a combination of "intense intimacy and awful reverence," he settles into such down-to-earth topics as how to choose a place and a posture in which to meditate.

Perhaps most interesting and useful is Foster's chapter on the controversial Christian discipline of submission. According to Foster, submission does not demand self-hatred or loss of identity. Instead, it simply means growing secure in the conviction that "our happiness is not dependent on getting what we want" but on the fulfillment that naturally flows from love of one's neighbors. Such wise and encouraging suggestions have helped many readers to discard the idea that discipline is an onerous duty and to move toward a liberating and simpler idea of discipline--whose defining character, as Foster never forgets, is joy. --Michael Joseph Gross

5 out of 5 stars A book worth celebrating!!.......2007-10-04

How does one live a spiritually disciplined life? What can individuals do to embrace discipleship and enhance their spiritual growth? These are among the questions tackled by author Richard Foster in his book, Celebration of Discipline: the Path to Spiritual Growth. Of course, Foster has in mind not just any kind of spiritual growth, but specifically Christian spiritual growth.

In the first major segment of the book, Foster discusses inward disciplines of meditation, prayer, fasting and study. In the second segment of the book, he discusses the disciplines of simplicity, solitude, submission and service. In the final third of the book, he tackles the corporate disciplines of confession, worship, guidance and celebration here yet

The tone of the book is humble and helpful, not preaching or dogmatic. Underlying Foster's recommendations are the fact that spiritual growth is not a matter of working through a checklist but making sure that one's heart is in the right place along with the outward practices.

This book is a classic for anyone wishing to deepen their spiritual life and their relationship with God.

This is a very inspirational book. For an indepth plan to live the right kind of life, this book puts you on the proper track. If you wonder if you are praying and worshipping correctly, please read this wonderful, easy to read, book.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing like pressure.......2007-08-31

Hopefully, readers won't come away from this discouraged about the fact that they're undisciplined sluggards. :) This motivated me to try harder to exercise various elements of discipline, and learning self control is never a bad thing. If you've always thought that fasting sounds interesting but have never been motivated enough to try it, read this.

5 out of 5 stars A Christian Classic.......2007-08-29

For some reason, some Christians today assume that anything that deals with spiritual formation and uses terms like "meditation" is automatically "new age mysticism." This guilt-by-false-association leads some reviewers to dismiss great works such as Celebration of Discipline. Foster, in the historic Christian tradition, offers a biblical path to spiritual growth through the spiritual disciplines.

5 out of 5 stars Discipline is Misunderstood.......2007-08-10

In today's culture, discipline is seen as a dirty word. Not so for Richard Foster. In Celebration of Discipline, Foster reminds us that discipline is a gift that helps us to enjoy our freedom.

In this book, Foster does a wonderful job of making spirituality accessible to the average person and illustrates beautifully that Christianity is a spiritual path. This message is much needed in an age when so many Christian leaders present Christianity as a set of doctrines and rules to abide by. Foster shows that spiritual discipline comes first, helping us to put ourselves right with God so that our love of neighbor has a firm and sound foundation.

Foster helps us to see that discipline is not restrictive but actually frees us to do more. This makes perfect sense. If you want to enjoy the game of tennis or golf, you need the discipline to learn the skills that will allow you to enjoy the game more deeply. Foster teaches us that the same is true of spiritual discipline. We do not discipline ourselves just for the sake of discipline or to make ourselves miserable but rather to enjoy the freedom to live more fully in God.

Brian O'Connell's Voices From The Heart, profiles 25 active volunteers from around the United States. The volunteers range in age and all are working on a variety of projects that help make the world a better place. The new book is perfect for a coffee table or holiday gift. I read many profiles on my way back from San Francisco and I couldn't put the book down.

Strap on your helmet and prepare to knock heads: Every page of Football's 100 Greatest Players dares you to challenge it. The volume's gutsiness, however, is its essence; unlike many similar assemblages, the list is presented in numerical order, with each entry drawing its own proverbial line of scrimmage. The surprises begin right at Number 1: Browns running back Jim Brown. "He came, he saw, he conquered," writes Smith, "And then, like a thief in the night he disappeared from professional football with every rushing record known to man." Numbers 2 and 3 are pretty startling, if only for their contemporary contemporaneousness--Jerry Rice and Joe Montana, together again. The rest of the Top 10 is spread around the field, both temporally and by position: Lawrence Taylor, Johnny Unitas, Don Hutson, Otto Graham, Walter Payton, Dick Butkus, and Bob Lilly. John Elway sneaks into the Top 20 at 16, and old stalwarts like Red Grange and Jim Thorpe hover down in the 80s--with Bret Favre.

The real difficulty in ranking football players is the apples-and-oranges subjectivity of comparing a center (Jim Otto, ranked number 78) to a defensive end (Gino Marchetti, 15), a cornerback (Night Train Lane, 19), a linebacker (Mike Singletary, 56), a fullback (Bronko Nagurski, 35), or a wide receiver (Fred Biletnikoff, 94). Some, like Frank Gifford, Paul Hornung, and Jim Taylor, don't even make the cut. The 100 who do, though, get deluxe treatment: a full-page photo and Smith's spry textual tour of the player and his accomplishments, with applicable stats at the back of the volume and lots of individualized Top-10 lists, like No. 98--George Blanda's Smartest Quarterbacks--and No. 64--Ted Hendricks's Toughest Runners To Tackle. Still, the fun of Football's 100 Greatest is its interactivity; the moment you open it up, you'll doubtless start looking to blow holes through its defenses. --Jeff Silverman

    4 out of 5 stars The NFL's 100 all-time best.......2001-04-07

This book is loads of fun to the NFL enthusiast. All eras of the NFL are included (from the 1930's to the present day) as well as all positions (except kickers and punters -- I guess none of them were among the top 100 players). Each entry gets a full two pages -- one a beautiful full-color picture and one a page-long description of that player's special talents and accomplishments. Each player also gets a "Top 10 list" -- a list by a colleague or coach of the best players, most intense players, smartest players, etc. -- including that individual.

The selection and ranking of players was as unbiased as possible. The editors began with 300 names, which they then reduced to 100, and from which each selected his top ten players, without ranking them. After tabulating the results, the editors then ranked the top 10. Then the voters selected their next 15 players, compared notes, and ranked numbers 11-25. They did this with 26-50, 51-75, and 76-100. Is the book still subjective? Undoubtably. You can't objectively compare linemen to running backs to receivers to quarterbacks and objectively identify the overall best players. But the editors did their best to be objective.

The top 10, in order from #1, are Jim Brown, Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, Lawrence Taylor, Johnny Unitas, Don Hutson, Otto Graham, Walter Payton, Dick Butkus, and Bob Lilly. I would give this book 5 stars, except that John Elway only comes in at #16, which IMHO is about 15 slots too low (but that shows you where I grew up :-) (Also, Bronco fans should be sure to look on the last 2 pages for an extra special treat.)

All in all, this is a fun book about some great football players. Whether or not you agree with the rankings, you gotta admit: all of the top 100 were/are great players!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Picks!.......2000-10-12

How do you go about picking the greatest 100 football players of all time? There are going to be agreements about who should be on it, and lots of disagreements about who should or shouldn't be on it. This book tackles an extremely difficult job and comes out a winner. Whether or not you agree with all the choices here, you have to admit they picked some damn good ones.

Each page contains pics and a bio on the player. They list Jim Brown as number 1. Funny how just the other night I was in a local sports bar, and a man sitting next to me said "Jim Brown was the greatest player I ever saw." Obviously, this book agrees with my "friend." In fact, the book's forword is written by Brown.

In addition to TSN's Top 100 players listed in numercial order, there's also a "timeline" of when these players were active. Also listed are TSN's all-decade teams. Leafing through the pages brought back memories of players I have watched and enjoyed, and of players whose exploits I only read about years after their careers ended.

So do you agree with all the choices in this book? The only way to find out is to buy it and judge for yourself. I guarantee it's well worth the money.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2000-04-09

I Enjoyed this Book but Lists aren't Important.Cuz you can never say who would rule any given Time Period.I think all People Selected are Winners.of Course their are some who didn't make the list and therefor they should be acknowledged as well.

    5 out of 5 stars A Celebration of Ireland.......2007-02-26

This wonderful volume matches a gallery of photographs that truly capture the beauty of Ireland with a collection of blessings attributed to Irish saints, songwriters, poets, and Irish custom. The effect of the collection is both moving and comforting, especially to those who have been fortunate enough to experience Ireland first hand.

The photography heavily favors the wild and undeveloped Western part of Ireland; visitors may recognize scenes from the Dingle Peninsula and the Killarny area, among others. The blessings are a celebration of Irish spirituality; quotes from early Irish Christians mingle with customary blessings and songs and items from popular Irish writers. They together are an invocation to remember the simple and important things in life.

This book is highly recommended to the reader familar with Ireland and with its spirituality.

This is a Wonderful book! The pictures are very beautiful, vivid!
And the verses are lovely...I am just thrilled to have bought a copy. Our Public Library even ordered a copy after having looked through mine. Outstanding!! Truly.

4 out of 5 stars A Photo Collection Of Great Interest.......2001-02-22

I lived in London for two years a decade ago and so had the opportunity to travel extensively through the stunning countryside of England and Scotland. I never made it to Ireland however and so purchased Irish Blessings in order to have a good look at what I missed. TOO MUCH!

This collection of photographs was taken from a number of different sources. It is a lovely, well-assembled collection indeed and many of the plates are of a very high quality. All are of interest.

The book is broken up into three distinct parts with the first concentrating on the land itself. The second part, "...Home And Hearth," includes numerous shots of both the interior of Irish dwellings and photographs of a diverse sampling of buildings, often in sumptuous settings. The final segment of Irish Blessings is devoted to means of travel about the country which includes photographs of boats by the sea, rivers, roads through the countryside, and the odd bicycle or two propped up against a wooden covered bridge or a village pub waiting to provide simple transport to their owners.

There are not many people represented in the collection but photographs of animals that are integral to Irish country life are ubiquitous . One photo of a dog lazily resting upon the back of a horse is devine. And a picture of a cow atop a wondrous stone wall abutting the sea offers a unique, special image.

The photographs in this portfolio are matched with Irish verse and song. That is a nice idea but I only wish that a bit of text which conveyed something about the locations depicted had been included as well. As it stands, there is no way to know where in Ireland each photograph was taken unless one was very familiar with the country beforehand. A small problem perhaps, in an offering of great beauty and spirit.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Coffee Table Book..........2000-06-17

I guess I'm partial to Irish things, but I think this is a beautiful book. Pages are split between pictures...landscapes, buildings, homes, and text... Irish blessings (May the road rise to meet you...etc.) and Irish poets. Not a book to read staight through, but a great display book for you and guests to thumb through during idle moments.

    Book Description

Americans in search of family oriented domestic travel, safe and inexpensive, are buying trailers and RVs in record numbers. At the same time-with fantasies of Lauren Bacall sipping an extra-dry Gibson against a gleaming metal doorway in Palm Springs and Lucy and Desi's madcap Long, Long Trailer trip-they crave the vanished luxury and quirkiness of antique auto trailers. Those simpler, slower days of freedom and security are being recaptured in trailers from all eras, rescued and restored as living, road-ready Americana.

Ready to Roll, with more than 300 color photographs, taps into this trend in gloriously illustrated and insightfully chronicled retro style. Here is the complete evolution of the trailer, from the utilitarian Covered Wagon to the aristocratic Airstream and Aerocar Land Yacht to the homemade Hammer Blows of the Depression. Here too are the people who drove these cherished chariots and increasingly lived in them in trailer parks, from the stereotypically seedy to the likes of Bing Crosby's exclusive Blue Skies Trailer Village. The amazing camaraderie of groups like the Tin Can Tourists marks the trailer phenomenon as a major segment of American consciousness and history.

5 out of 5 stars This is my trailer bible!.......2005-11-15

I have a weakness for books on architecture and interior decorating anyway. But this is the one I turn to again and again. For those of us with Champaign tastes and beer budgets, a vintage trailer is ulimately doable. Own your own piece of modernist archeture, albeit on wheels, even though you could never touch a Mies or Wright. When ever I try to figure out what to do with my 1957 Sportcraft (a classic silver-clad "canned ham"), I flip through these pages. I always find something inspiring.

    4 out of 5 stars A must read.......2004-11-29

This is an incredible wealth of information for anyone interested in architecture, travel trailers, and Americana in general. Lovely photography is augmented by nicely coordinated text. Some redundancy is my only criticism.

5 out of 5 stars A Photographic Romp Through the World of American RVing.......2004-03-01

An architect and a photographer co-authored this classic mix of pix and text that rolls us down the American back roads in high style. From the early almost-train cars manufactured for the wealthy, to the poor man's alternative --- "Sleep in Your Car," one ad suggests --- we are drawn along by the fantasy of life fully lived away from home, a fantasy that could only have taken root in America, where roads and cars grew up together in serendipitous symbiosis.

Before the metal bodies and custom interiors, there had been the Conestoga wagons and, before that, the wooden gypsy vardos of old Europe. Sheepherders had "arks" made for crawling across the lonesome prairie, precursors to "tin can tourism" that attracted freedom-loving Americans almost as soon as they discovered the practicality of the auto itself.

From the 1930s onward, the question was not if they would buy it but what shape they would purchase, as independent companies vied for a market share, assembling campers shaped like teardrops, bread loaves and fantastical avian forms lifted from the burgeoning airplane industry.

Today's RVers owe much to Wally Byam, a true fanatic whose conception of a trailer accessible to the average middle-class family resulted in the Airstream, arguably the finest development of the pull-along format. With wood paneled mod cons within and an aerodynamic metal bullet exterior, the Airstream divorced trailering from the Oakie image and spawned many imitators. While confections like the Curtiss Aerocar and Pierce Arrow's faux railcar sought the aristocratic end of the market, and utilitarian itsy-bitsy tent-trailer combos attracted the low budget traveler, Airstream sat doggedly in the middle, offering class, ease of hauling and fine workmanship at an affordable price. "Today, more than four decades after his death in 1962, Byam's basic Airstream design continues to roll off the Jackson Center production lines, still widely regarded as the Rolls-Royce of trailers, and still inspiring imitations."

For nearly fifty years in the heyday of over-the-road vacationing, there was a Very Large Array of metal boxes on wheels, with names like Comet, Gypsy Wagon, Spartanette and Airfloat, and some more durable brands like Shasta. Because these ephemeral blips on the trailering screen were often handcrafted and built, remarkably, to last, many are still rolling or at least set up on blocks in mint condition, alluringly photogenic.

Gellner and Keister sought them out and tastefully snapped their innards and their outer skins, along with the cars that pull them. Where the snowbirds flock, these metal bubbles proliferate, often hauled by cars of equal interest to collectors. Now there's a new craze, and why are we not surprised --- that of building "vintage" campers, look-alikes to the old timey road runners of the early 20th century. Is this true "camp" or what?

Peering inside these metal marvels, via the camera's eye, we get a feeling for what was considered essential to the traveler in times past: parquet flooring, lounge chairs, recessed doors and plastic laminate kitchen counters, the latest thing. Beginning as a simple imitation of home interior design, trailer construction soon became a playground for experimentation in the technology of the tiny, the art of making things work smoothly in cramped quarters without skinning knuckles or having to sleep in a ball.

Like millions of Americans, I've followed the camper craze, the boondoggling and midnight interstate rest area getaways. I've moved with the carnival where homes on wheels have to be durable for the weekly hops. Maybe when I retire I'll look for a campsite at Slab City in California or Quartzite, Arizona.

If you love this book, then you're the guy for me. You and I could hit the high spots --- starting at Braden's Castle in Reno (that's where we'll get married), then on to Shady Dell in Bisbee, Arizona, where overnight guests can stay in vintage trailers. We'll honeymoon there in the Spartan Royal Mansion.

Ready to Roll: A celebration of the Classic American Travel Trailer
Although I am admittedly a bit biased because of Tin Can Tourists' association with Dough Keister and this project, I found the book to be top notch. The blend of Arrol Gellner's text with Doug's pictures provides the reader with much more than a typical "coffee table" book.
I believe it deserves a place with Galloping Bungalows and Wheel Estate as a must for those that require a fuller understanding of the RV evolution from the Tin Can Tourists to Airstream Founder, Wally Byam.

    Book Description

This well written book presents a group of people, in St. Petersburg (former Leningrad), Russia, who call themselves 'The Free Body Culture Society'. Filled with large color photographs of the men, women and children who make up this 'Society', this book brings the unique group to life for the reader. Concerned with the health of their environment, the Free Body Culture Society Members are also the founders of the Russian Green Party. They spend their social time enjoying ancient 'Rus' festivals, sunny days at the beach and Russia's famous 'white nights' around the bonfire. Some events photographed in this book include: 3 females in the country, Children's Day at the beach, Ivana Kupala (The Night of Love), and a Naturist Wedding. As well, their are interviews of the photographer, Mikhail Rusinov, and child naturist, Alla.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very nice book of naturist photography........2006-03-21

I purchased this book because of an interest in the naturist/nudist lifestyle. I have always enjoyed the naked, female form and this is one way of pursuing that interest. The book is well written, forgiving any translation errors. The photography is very good, with the subjects well placed and well lit. The subjects are photographed in natural settings, doing everyday things, like swimming at the beach, or enjoying a picnic lunch. The only difference is that they are nude.

If you are seeking pornographic images, you won't find them in this book. The photographs are aesthetically pleasing and artistic in nature. The subjects are mainly young females. Young, as in teens to early 20's. While this may bother some people, there is nothing lewd about their posing or the manner in which they are presented. Think Jock Sturges, or Sally Mann for a reference to style and composition.

    Overall, a very nice book.

    1 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY DISSAPPOINTED..........2005-01-29

I was so dissappointed that this had a synopsis that it was about "family" nudist in Russia and when it arrived at least I would guess, 98% of it was women and young girls. If thats what you want fine, but if you are seriously interested in the WHOLE family of naturist..........then you will be dissappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Naturism Book.......2004-08-16

August 1991, Putsch-time. Mikhail and Galina Rusinov stand defiantly with thousands of other Russians in St. Petersburg and prepare to die under the tracks of tanks. In Moscow, Boris Yeltsin stand defiantly before the tanks as well, and in a great overturning of Russian authority, ousts the "vacationing" Mikhail Gorbachev and with him seventy years of Communist tyranny. "Thank God the tanks did not advance," Mikhail Rusinov remarks, "But, we had to do it. We could not let totalitarian rule return."

Such resolve speaks to the central message of this book. Mikhail Rusinov is a co-founder of The Free Body Culture Society, a remarkable social project with far-reaching implications for the "new" Russia. Aligned with the Green Party, they call themselves Holy Nature, and they have begun to gain international recognition for their efforts to re-integrate the values and mores of an ancient Russian culture (the Rus) into modern life. Based in St. Petersburg (formerly Leningrad), and long considered the intellectual and cultural capital of Russia, the Free Body Culture Society has grown to well over 700 members, with hundreds more joining in spontaneously on sunny days at the clothes-optional beaches.

The Free Body Culture Society began quietly and secretly among 20 or so people, including the current president, Kirill Vasiliev, in the 1970's during the heart of government repression. Despite continuous government harassment, the group expanded dramatically and, by 1983, formally elected Vasiliev. For eight more years, the group continued to attract new members and to expand its activities, all the while under constant surveillance and restraint by the police and the KGB.

In 1991, after the putsch, they were granted official recognition by the newly liberalized regional government. With the support of the local media, word spread and membership grew to the point now, on a sunny June day at Finnish Beach, over 2,000 nude sun bathers can be found participating with the "official" members of the society. With growing numbers at the beaches and a rejuvenated connection St. Petersburg naturists felt with their beaches, lakes and woods, an organized effort to preserve their natural surroundings began and, in 1991, Kiril Vasiliev and Mikhail Rusinov formed the St. Petersburg Green Party, known as Holy Nature. Through his ability to translate Russian and English, along with his extraordinary skills in internet communications, Rusinov and his associates have created an international voice for this burgeoning new group.

    1 out of 5 stars Dissapointed.......2003-03-13

I can say that I was much interested in russian freedom, but i got dissapointed with this book because its quality in a general sense is really poor, both technically and artistically speaking; so, don't waste your time and money and go for something else!

5 out of 5 stars Better Than Expected.......2002-05-20

I have to say that based on the cover, I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book. Well, if you like titles by David Hamilton, Jock Sturges etc. let me assure you will like this book. I see Amazon now carries a DVD called 'Rituals of Summer' that features the people from the book -- I'm ordering it and will write a review under it once viewed.

    Well written and hightly entertaining.
This small book captures the remarkable
charm and southern sleekness of this
city. AND the recipes are wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Cute and breezy.......2006-08-07

I've been going to Charleston since I was a small child, and I learned a few things from this fun little book. I bought it for the illustrations- I love maps and "Did you know" kinds of books-and thought this was the perfect marriage of the two. Charleston is so interesting that I think there is more to tell, so I wish it were a little longer.

5 out of 5 stars In Love with Charleston.......2006-07-26

My daughter had this book with her when we visited Charleston for the 2nd time. After reading it (couldn't put it down), we found more reasons to return to this wonderful area; learned more interesting facts about already viewed streets, homes and history. It is a light read with beautiful watercolor pictures throughout the book. Don't pass it up!

    5 out of 5 stars Delightful!.......2006-03-09

The wonderful watercolor drawings and short descriptions make this book a must have for those people who have been (or will soon go) to Charleston, South Carolina. The spirit and color of Charleston is captured in this small volume. I traveled to Charleston with three other women and we all bought this book! One lady even used it as her trip journal, making comments in the book about places we had been. I bought one for another friend going to Charleston and she, too, loved this little book.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Charleston.......2005-08-09

Very interesting little book with great illustrations. Gives insight to many of the things we South Carolians have always heard about Charleston like the derivation of Charleston Green paint, why the pineapple is a welcome sign, etc., etc.

    Book Description

Our planet, with all its spectacular diversity, is a source of endless fascination-the stunning success of books like Earth from Above is proof of that. Now comes this spellbinding volume, filled with glorious images from the world's greatest nature photographers. This breathtaking work celebrates the amazing variety of species and ecosystems and how various forces affect them positively and negatively. In his absorbing, informative text, journalist Nicolas Hulot presents a lucid portrait of eight ecosystems (forests, oceans, deserts, poles, mountains, wetlands, grasslands, and cities), the species that inhabit them, and the role humans play in each. One Planet, just in time for Earth Day, is a loving photographic tribute to the beauty of the earth-it will remind us all how important it is to preserve this exquisite planet.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended top pick........2006-11-06

Eight biological ecosystems of the Earth are described in full here, but with a difference: an oversized presentation and vivid full-page color photos are as much the emphasis as natural history text, lending to a format which will please coffee table collectors of fine art and photography as much as natural history readers. OUR PLANET: A CELEBRATION OF BIODIVERSITY gathers a striking abundance of close-up images of flora and fauna alike, presenting gorgeous shots which are extraordinarily artistic and well detailed. While the natural history explanations are very well done, it's the vivid color photos which makes for a unique, highly recommended top pick.

    Book Description

In 51 visually stunning, emotionally compelling portraits, acclaimed photographer Carol Ross presents a hopeful, heartwarming, and caring view of black fatherhood in the United States. In an era that pays little positive attention to black fathers, Ross's inspirational perspective on the relationships between black men and their children is vitally important—and long overdue.

Ross's richly textured duotone photographs reveal a group of devoted fathers whose common bond is their profound love for their children. For her subjects, Ross has selected men from all walks of life—college professors, filmmakers, technicians, construction workers, and corporate executives—along with well-known music executives, directors, entertainers, and actors, such as Antonio L. A. Reid, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Funk Master Flex, Doug E. Doug, and Melvin Van Peebles. Film star Samuel L. Jackson, photographed with his daughter, provides the book's foreword, and each portrait is accompanied by a poignant personal recollection by the father depicted.

Exquisitely designed, Pop: A Celebration of Black Fatherhood finally gives black men their own voice about their experience as fathers. Inspired by her own father, Ross's book is, in her words, “a round of applause, a bow, a `God bless you,'” to all those fathers who “take their children to that place where, one day, they can fly on their own.”

5 out of 5 stars A great book for fathers!.......2007-10-11

My brother-in-law had this book on his coffee table. He told me that his friend was in the book with his children. I read the book and liked what the fathers had to say. It was very positive and loving. I think every father should have a copy of this book to become inspired by these father's examples.

5 out of 5 stars Dispels Myth that Black Men don't raise their children.......2007-05-24

Carol Ross has done her part with this work which is a valuable, necessary and fantastic contribution to American culture. The book showcases photos of many black fathers with their black or mixed-race children in their everyday existence...doing their part to raise their children. An added bonus: reading the compelling and sometimes gripping account from each father profiled explaining what being a dad means to them.
