Book Description
This market-leading book provides comprehensive coverage of behavior management concepts and techniques and presents them in a versatile and practical manner for teachers.
This new edition has been shortened and streamlined and chapters flow step-by-step through an actual behavior analysis, using classroom-based examples and practices firmly grounded in research. Content is presented in the order of decision-making by: 1) a teacher who has a student exhibiting challenging behavior in class; or, 2) a student who needs to execute a behavior-change project. The text covers: identifying target behavior, collecting and graphing data, functional assessment, experimental design, arranging antecedents and consequences, generalizing behavior change and discusses the importance of ethical considerations in using applied behavior analysis in the classroom.
Inservice Teachers and Special Educators.
Customer Reviews:
For Advanced Study.......2007-10-01
I am currently taking a Graduate Level Advanced Behavior Analysis (ABA) class at a local university. This book was a requirement for my class and this class is required for graduation. This class was my first Special Education course and this book is definitely not for someone who doesn't understand reward/punishment with regards to behavior. The book is comprehensive but should not be used for someone looking to "gain a little insight" into ABA. This book encompasses all of ABA. If you are ABA certified, this book will help you "refresh" on the information you've already learned.
Good for Special Educators.......2007-03-08
I had to buy this textbook last year, as I was getting my teaching endorsement in Special Education. It is a good text, although mostly only useful if you are studying this for ceritification (I haven't used since I've been teaching).
Teach yourself to teach kids!.......2006-07-20
This detailed how to book offers a variety of technical interventions and some neccessary theory surrounding Applied Behavior Analysis. It also presents a variety of explanations and examples for classroom use. I really enjoyed the read and highly recommend it. My students also found it usefull!
For learning about ABA and relating to school you cannot beat this book..........2006-05-13
My title states it all. The 7th edition trumps the phenomenal 6th edition in it's inclusion of IDEA 2004/NCLB concepts. It is well worth the price difference between this book and most ABA books.
technical lingo.......2006-03-17
The only thing I really did not like about this book was it had a lot of technical verbage that tends to put one to sleep. The examples and scenarios were helpful in presenting the content.

Classroom Assesssment Review.......2006-08-07
Excellent book! Angelo was very clear and concise in guiding teachers through the assessment process.
CATs for the classroom.......2005-08-14
The text was used in a course through UW Stout and it is a very good resource for methods that can be used to assess learners progress towards a goal. Great tool to have on the bookshelf!
A Classic.......2004-08-03
Cross and Angelo is a classic text that all professors should have in their teaching and learning library. The techniques are concrete, simple, and powerful. This is not a theory book but truly a handbook of techniques that will not only improve your teaching but more importantly improve your students' learning.
Sourcebook Of Best Teaching Techniques.......2002-07-24
Although the title is certainly somewhat misleading, this is a good sourcebook of the best teaching techniques culled from a wide range of instructional situations. There is something here for everyone in every situation, elementary ed, high school, community college, and yes, those of us at universities too.
I can't imagine many educators who will not find something to improve their teaching effectiveness in this book. A great advantage is that each technique is presented individually so that you can literally pick and choose and then try them out without having to read extensively to understand the potential for each.
If you teach (this is my 25th year teaching college), I recommend two books once you have spent a few years at it and want to continue to improve your effectiveness....this one and Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman's "Six Easy Pieces"
Both more and less than I expected.......2001-10-18
The rating of 4 stars I'm giving this is a combination of 3 stars and 5 stars. Some of the techniques presented are worth the 5 stars; the lack of actual forms or examples as administered is the 3 stars. There are many examples of each technique, but all are given as narrative descriptions, not as copies of the assessment form or handout.
One thing potential buyers should be aware of: THIS IS NOT A BOOK ABOUT GIVING TESTS. If you are looking for how to write tests, how to test your students, how to design exams, try James Popham or something similar. This is a book full of ways to survey your students to determine whether they are ready to learn, whether they are ready to absorb more information, whether they are understanding the material - but not tests.
Let me give you examples of the techniques I found immediately useful:
Technique #1: Background Knowledge Probe. This is to be given at the first class meeting, to see whether your students know what they're supposed to before they start your class. Here's how I administered it: I teach a course called "Quantitative Applications Software." It's mainly about using Microsoft Excel and related spreadsheets, and it's primarily for business majors to fill their core computer requirement. I prepared a survey form which had about 20 questions in all, with three columns to check off: "Know how to do this" (have studies it, remember it, can calculate it), "Have heard of this" (the concept is familiar but I don't remember how to figure it) and "Not familiar with this." The items to rate were divided into 3 categories: math knowledge (Square roots, exponents, order of operations); business concepts (compound interest, present value, mortgages, multi-state sales taxes) and Excel concepts - which is what the students would be learning, but some already know (built-in statistical functions, calculating loan payments, setting up invoicing systems, working with multiple files.) The students filled out this survey anonymously, so no one had to be embarrassed, and then after scanning the surveys, I announced that people who were unsure of the math concepts could get tutoring, people who knew all the Excel concepts might be able to test out of the course, and for everybody else, I would have an idea of how much time to spend explaining background math before introducing an Excel function.
Technique #25: Student-generated test questions. Students have to generate both questions and answers. This allows you to see what they think is the most important material they've studied so far, whether they've done only the homework or also studied handouts and their lecture notes, and whether they can organize their thinking. This one should be done only after you've already given the students at least one exam or a few quizzes, so that they know the length and difficulty of questions you expect.
On the other hand, many of the techniques are not very useful for my subject area - some are writing-intensive and don't fit in with a course that is mostly hands-on lab work; some require students to list pros and cons of something - not necessarily feasible in a course where there's a fixed minimum of material that MUST be covered, whether the students like it or not. More useful, I suspect, for classes where there are issues and current events and discussions, than for computer science basics.

Book Description
Now, Discover Your Strengths introduced millions of Americans to the unique, personal strengths that they could use to succeed in life. Teach with Your Strengths expands upon the best-selling Now, Discover Your Strengths and shows how anyone who teaches — from classroom instructors to coaches to business executives — can get the most from their students. Focusing on the central insight that all great teachers make the most of their natural talents, Teach with Your Strengths shows teachers how to avoid the pitfalls that lead to mediocrity and work best with what they have. The book is written by two teachers with a combined 70 years of classroom and consulting experience, and it includes real-life examples of how great teachers use their strengths to solve problems, battle bureaucracy, and reach all of their students. For anyone who has ever wanted to be a better teacher, Teach with Your Strengths offers proven techniques to help readers get the results they want.
Customer Reviews:
The first two chapters or so were good.......2007-08-11
I was really happy with the book through the first two or three chapters. The book said a lot of things that I already feel about teaching. Essentially, it says, "Teachers are good because of who they are, and they're better when they teach with their strengths."
That's a great sentiment.
However, the middle chapters quickly devolved into a promotion for a particular personality trait test. I felt like bit like I was being lured into a Dianetics room. I felt slightly hesitant while moving on past the initial chapters, because the authors kept talking about one particular personality test.
I checked this book out from the library, and I had just finished telling my wife how I was going to be purchasing the book to have at school. Then came the Clifton test advertisements.
If you don't mind reading books that are intended to advertise a product, then by all means, please read this book. If that sort of thing offends you, then don't get it. If you don't care either way, only read the first few chapters. You won't know the difference.
This book just makes sense.......2006-08-18
I was at first apprehensive about buying this book. After all, what would the Gallup Poll know about teaching? Well, it turns out that they know a lot. Being a "highly qualified teacher", i.e. having a license to teach a subject is not enough these days. Good teachers must also be able to "connect" to students. The authors are realistic and their findings are extremely helpful. For example, working on ones weaknesses won't work. If you are an introvert, taking classes in public speaking won't help that much; it certainly won't make you an extrovert. This book is an excellent read for anyone who works with or is interested in working with students.
leaves out my own groundbreaking research.......2006-05-23
This book is awesome with a capital "E", and I have nothing bad to say about it. It is however, woefully inadequate, as it leaves out my own follow up research on "great" teachers. While they do indeed possess the common characteristics noted in the book (saluting when addressed directly; refering to themselves in the third person plural; loathing humanity; subscribing to Newsweek; and being unusually "voluminous" in their personal lives - I still don't get that one) I have discovered that they have a few other important traits in common as well. Below is an exhaustive list:
1. They sweat easily and profusely
2. They sometimes spit on students when emphasizing something they think is important. They never do this intentionally. It usually comes out during a hard "K" sound. More often than not, it simply lands on the student's picture of their boyfriend on their notebook - the student's boyfriend, not the teacher's. A great teacher would never spit on a picture of their own boyfriend (see appendix 4, section A.b.12.A IV)
3. They think Sweden should be a permanent member off the UN Security Council.
Before you "educators" out there run off and douse yourself in someone's sweat in the hopes your principal will be fooled into nominating your for teacher of the year, remember that, while all great teachers sweat, spit and have a thing for Sweden being a permanent member of the security council, not all people who sweat and spit and want Sweden to be able to veto UN resolutions are good teachers. In fact, many of them are simply Swedish.
I'm looking forward to reading this book some day.
Teach with your strengths.......2005-11-29
Teach with your strengths is focused on a strategy of self-discovery first, teaching methodologies second. This may disappoint many who are looking for easy answers to becoming better teachers. However, I found it quite revealing and useful as an adult who teaches innovation and creativity in my professional life, and as an adult who teaches Christianity to adults in my personal life. The Gallup folks are trying to start a positive revolution in many people's lives by focusing on our strengths. Teachers are the prime movers and shakers in that revolution. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to even further materials from Gallup and these authors.
Teach with your strengths.......2005-10-27
You always hear about these Gallup polls for this or that. I had no idea there was a Gallup Press putting out books based on poll results. Who'd've guessed it? "Teach with Your Strengths" is a good to provoke thought for the most part. After reading it, I'm not so sure whether individuals should teach to their strengths or with their strengths. The distinction is an important one because readers are told to define the important characteristics of their strengths and given over to the Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment to help. It is only the final chapter that provides the details on what the assessment measures, and possibly only the final chapter that merits the purchase of the book.

Book Description
In this funny and insightful book, Gary Rubinstein relives his own truly disastrous first year of teaching. He begins his teaching career armed only with idealism and romantic visions of teaching - and absolutely no classroom management skills. By his fourth year, however, he is named his school's "Teacher of the Year." As Rubinstein details his transformation from incompetent to successful teacher, he shows what works and what doesn't work when managing a classroom.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent and realistic.......2007-09-09
I had gotten this book as a Good Luck present for my boyfriend, who just got his first teaching job. He admits that he has had trouble with classroom management and other books he had gotten were unrealistic. This book, he believes because the author found himself in a unique situation in his education career, is different because they present real problems with real solutions (and fun little sidebars too!). I flipped through the book briefly and I saw that there were case-scenarios. He said that he actually finds real situations that he has encountered and he learns a lot by comparing what he did to what the author did.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone starting in teaching, as well as a great gift to young teachers!!
Good if you're middle school and up........2007-09-08
This book is better suited for middle school teachers and beyond. As an early childhood teacher, I did not get as much out of the book as I had hoped.
Kinda disappointed.......2007-09-07
I bought this book because I too am a softie disciplinarian. See, I'm not exactly trained in the areas I'm teaching, thus my classroom management skills for the subjects I am teaching are kinda... undesirable. So I bought this book hoping for suggestions as to how to improve, and while this book was very humorous and entertaining, I also saw how much I am not a softie. This guy was really bad. I also don't agree with the whole not smiling thing. That is not a part of my personality, thus the kids would see right through me and it would still create problems, not solve them. I didn't really get any good ideas as to how to improve. I would have been better served checking this book out at the library and reading it just for some positive thinking about my own teaching methods. I like the book, but it wasn't what I expected.
An unnecessary read.......2007-08-26
There's not enough in this book to warrant purchasing and/or reading it. A large proportion of the work contains the author's introduction of himself (not applicable in the classroom) and then he espouses what not to do (equally not applicable because the information is not immediately countered by what a teacher should do). What a teacher should do for discipline problems, the author explains, comes down to deciding what kind of teacher you want to be. He provides 5 examples of different "types" of teachers (overly generalized, although amusing, and mostly unrealistic). The only value in this book emerges in the last 10 pages when the author's colleagues share their brief insights to quick classroom management problems.
Reluctant Disciplinarian: Advice on Classroom Management.......2007-07-23
I purchased this book for my wife. She is the head of English at a middle/lower socio-economic level High School. They have a number of younger or perhaps newer to the profession teachers.
My wife was very pleased with the information and strategies offered in this book. It has been especially useful in helping some of her teachers deal with discipline and classroom management issues that are commonly found in todays classrooms.
We would recommend this book to teachers.

Excellent resource, but guidance was helpful.......2006-02-25
Teachers and the Law (6th Edition) was the primary text used for my National-Louis University (Wheeling, IL) School Law course. Although the text implies that only information regarding teachers will be discussed, Fischer actually covers legal issues that deal with many levels of educational law including student cases, administrator cases, and even cases that don't involve teachers at all, but loosely relate to educational law in general.
This was my first exposure to any formally-presented school law information and I must confess that I was quite overwhelmed at first. Fischer tends to present a major case very clearly and then fully explains its implications and outcomes. However, he then presents several other related cases that often have conflicting or opposing outcomes to the original point.
What I learned from this text is that there is very little "black and white" when it comes to interpreting school law. I was interested to learn that even the landmark decision cases are still constantly debated in the courts and sometimes ignored when decisions are made by judges or juries. It took our experienced professor to help us understand the subtext of some of the cases and discern the probable reasons why some cases were decided in seemingly arbitrary ways.
In general, Teachers and the Law greatly increased my understanding of school law, but without an experienced professor, I would not have gleaned as much practical information.
Teachers and the Law.......2005-09-18
I received the book in good shape. The cover looked next to new and there were very little marks or highlights in the text.
A Must Read for Teachers.......2003-05-01
Case law, unless done perhaps by the likes of John Grissam, is not page turning material. However, the authors have done an incredible job of putting very pressing and often complex areas into an accessible and engaging book. Written in an easy to use question and answer format, the updated book touches on education legal issues ranging from free speech, to students with disabilities, to internet issues. While of great use for educator (or educators to be), the book could also easily be adapted for classroom use, either as a debate or research starter. Worth every penny of its price.

Including Students..........2007-10-10
The product was delivered two days after it was promised. Other than that, product was good.
Awful.......2007-09-04
Do you know what "collaboration" means? According to this book it's about talking to your co-workers and making sure to be nice to them....and it takes 10 text-book sized pages to explain that simple fact.
Then there's the section on laws and modern special education concerns, where each major law is given a paragraph and a half of explanation, and the acronyms for these skipped-over laws are used consistently from that point onwards without further explanation.
That's really the problem with this book. It's too much for some things, and not enough for others. The writing is about as engaging as the instructions for installing your cable tv, and the stories are well too short to carry any significant meaning.
In short...skip it. If this is your classroom textbook, as it was mine, I feel your pain.
Great product, great price.......2007-02-11
I am very happy with Amazon's service. The book is great and the price is much cheaper than the university bookstore.
Insightful.......2006-08-15
This is a great book to use as a reference. It's an easy read and full of useful information. However, the book is a little pricey.
Including Students with special needs: A Practical Guide for classroom teachers (4th edition) .......2006-03-04
This was my first purchase on Amazon and it went very smoothly. The price was reasonable and it arrived in a few days. Great experience!

Waste of time if you have ever been in a classroom before.......2007-03-10
I thought this book was a waste of my time. I am currently a student teacher. This book did not contain anything I did not already know from working as a teacher's aide or a substitute teacher. If you have ever been in a classroom before, the book will not be necessary. I bought this book for a class, and did not even need it. My past and present experiences alone gave me the information i needed for papers and discussions. ON the otherhand, if you are entering studnet teaching without ever having worked in a classroom, the book may prepare you for this you never knew about.
