Book Description

Katrina Firlik is a neurosurgeon, one of only two hundred or so women among the alpha males who dominate this high-pressure, high-prestige medical specialty. She is also a superbly gifted writer–witty, insightful, at once deeply humane and refreshingly wry. In Another Day in the Frontal Lobe, Dr. Firlik draws on this rare combination to create a neurosurgeon’s Kitchen Confidential–a unique insider’s memoir of a fascinating profession.

Neurosurgeons are renowned for their big egos and aggressive self-confidence, and Dr. Firlik confirms that timidity is indeed rare in the field. “They’re the kids who never lost at musical chairs,” she writes. A brain surgeon is not only a highly trained scientist and clinician but also a mechanic who of necessity develops an intimate, hands-on familiarity with the gray matter inside our skulls. It’s the balance between cutting-edge medical technology and manual dexterity, between instinct and expertise, that Firlik finds so appealing–and so difficult to master.

Firlik recounts how her background as a surgeon’s daughter with a strong stomach and a keen interest in the brain led her to this rarefied specialty, and she describes her challenging, atypical trek from medical student to fully qualified surgeon. Among Firlik’s more memorable cases: a young roofer who walked into the hospital with a three-inch-long barbed nail driven into his forehead, the result of an accident with his partner’s nail gun, and a sweet little seven-year-old boy whose untreated earache had become a raging, potentially fatal infection of the brain lining.

From OR theatrics to thorny ethical questions, from the surprisingly primitive tools in a neurosurgeon’s kit to glimpses of future techniques like the “brain lift,” Firlik cracks open medicine’s most prestigious and secretive specialty. Candid, smart, clear-eyed, and unfailingly engaging, Another Day in the Frontal Lobe is a mesmerizing behind-the-scenes glimpse into a world of incredible competition and incalculable rewards.

I usually turn down a page not to keep my place but to remember passages/pages that i want to read again later because they were unusually interesting or funny. With this particular book i found myself turning down so many pages that i realized i would just have to read the entire book again. It was funny,it was interesting and the author seemed so likable and normal that i just felt like i was right there with her thru the good, the bad and the weird.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended for all, especially early undergrads.......2007-10-01

I'm not a neurosurgeon nor an M.D., but this field intrigues me. This book has further enhanced my curiousity of the field and that is a good thing.

Katrina Firlik did a superb job at maintaining my interest throughout the book and provided me with other avenues of interest. For me, this is a huge plus. This can be explained by the fact that every chapter has an interesting story and her discussions are not phony. For example, Firlik explains that she wanted to become a neurosurgeon b/c it most greatly interested her and not b/c of some phony answer like "I wanted to save people." I would have felt betrayed had she not been blunt and truthful.

At times, she had me question my career choice while at other times made me happy that I didn't choose hers. When I get interviewed, I'm commonly asked, "If you weren't doing _______ as a career, what would you be doing?" Before this book, I never had a response.

Had I read this during my early undergrad years, I'm not sure what path I would have choosen.

4 out of 5 stars Accessible and Interesting.......2007-09-14

Typically I stick to fiction, but as a premed dropout and Grey's Anatomy fan I saw this and thought it might be interesting. It turned out to be much better than I thought; Katrina Firlik does a wonderful job making sure her book is accessible and interesting to those with little medical background, but without making the reader feel uneducated. The stories she recounts from her years of training are interesting and serve to illustrate the larger points she is trying to make about her profession. It was also very refreshing to see a surgeon with personality- I worked with a group of vascular surgeons for several years and they were all work and no fun. In Another Day in the Frontal Lobe Firlik proves that even brain surgeons can be both.

I definitely recommend this book- entertaining, interesting and even educational!

4 out of 5 stars Balancing a Brain with a Knife.......2007-08-16

Dr. Firlik's description of the womb-to-tomb process of becomming a neurosurgeon was a delight to explore. Just like with the three bears, it wasn't too hard and wasn't too soft --- it is a just-right-read for anybody wanting to know the behind-the-scenes requirements on what it takes to become a brain surgeon. Dr. Firlik shows that, "...recalibrating patients' thinking ..." is as much an art as it is a technical science. Well done.

Book Description

In 1975, Angola was tumbling into pandemonium; everyone who could was packing crates, desperate to abandon the beleaguered colony. With his trademark bravura, Ryszard Kapuscinski went the other way, begging his was from Lisbon and comfort to Luanda—once famed as Africa's Rio de Janeiro—and chaos.

Angola, a slave colony later given over to mining and plantations, was a promised land for generations of poor Portuguese. It had belonged to Portugal since before there were English-speakers in North America. After the collapse of the fascist dictatorship in Portugal in 1974, Angola was brusquely cut loose, spurring the catastrophe of a still-ongoing civil war. Kapuscinski plunged right into the middle of the drama, driving past thousands of haphazardly placed check-points, where using the wrong shibboleth was a matter of life and death; recording his imporessions of the young soldiers—from Cuba, Angola, South Africa, Portugal—fighting a nebulous war with global repercussions; and examining the peculiar brutality of a country surprised and divided by its newfound freedom.

Translated from the Polish by William R. Brand and Katarzyna Mroczkowska-Brand.

5 out of 5 stars Mondo Cane - with apologies to my five happy dogs.......2007-08-06

Anything goes when it comes to the raw greed and clan warfare that characterizes human behavior. Kapuscinsky's reportage is brilliant, relentless and focused. He describes the roots of the human condition in Angola at eye level. You can draw your own moral conclusions - and in case you are left wondering, this scenario is applicable wherever Western and/or European cultures operate in Africa...it's cynical exploitation in the name of Mamon all the way to the bank. Read this and ponder about the future of mankind. Thank you Ryszard, you deserve a Pulitzer prize for your reportage!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Kapuscinski.......2007-07-27

Nothing more need be said. It probably isn't as compelling as Shadow of the Sun, or Shah of Shah's, but it certainly is a fine book.

3 out of 5 stars Heart of darkness.......2007-02-20

This is a fine, fine piece of tightly written war reportage. From the first page the heat, tension, cruelty and fear of the Angola civil war following Portugese decolonisation is brought to life by Kapuscinski's biscuit dry prose. He was not one of these sit back and learn of events from a distance whilst sipping fine malt whisky journalists. He bore right into the heart of the action, frequently risking his life. Some of the stories in here are highly strung in terms of tension, wit and emotion. Take the encounter with the security post, where you have a choice of two greetings to shout to the guards, the wrong one will result in death, and garbling a half sounding equivocation doesn't cut it. Also the heartbreaking sacrifice by a Mulatto girl who stays behind and is killed after Kapuscinski's truck leaves.

Kapuscinski died very recently, he was one of those rare and brave Europeans who finds the intellectual life of Western Europe (though he was actually Polish) lax, self satisfied and bland, and sought to find places where life really was lived with every emotional and sensory dial turned up high. Another Day of Life is a very apt title.

This fast paced book taught me so much about Angola's history and

> account of war. It was an in-depth look at the people and their culture. It is
> the story of struggle for a whole civilization after gaining their independence
> from the ruthless European nation of Portugal. Kapuscinski didn't try to confuse

4 out of 5 stars Gripping!.......2004-06-09

Anybody not familiar with Kapucsinski's insightful and entertaining expedtions in the world's forgotten corners would do well to start with 'Another Day of Life.' A fast, page-turning account of Angola's tumultuous last days before independence (and the start of one of Africa's longest and bloodiest civil wars!), 'Another Day of Life' viscerally captures the utter chaos of war. Kapucsinski brilliantly illuminates a world where friend and foe slaughter each other through the steamy, tropical nights and then sleep it off during the burning days. In a world where your death comes at the hands of a Kalishnikov-totting ten-year old, where one false step means a life without legs, where the next check-point down a body-scattered road could be your last, Kapuscinski makes us look straight into the face of 'confusao,' the mind-numbing, senseless confusion of war.

Terse, nimble and always entertaining, Kapucinski's musical prose turns the pages for you. At about 130 pages, this is the ideal one-sit read. While the narrative meanders all over the place, you can't help but hold on tight, waiting to see what's next around the bend. Hold on as the sights, sounds and stenches of sub-Saharan African jump right off the page.....whether its the icy calm before an ambush, the bed full of cockroaches or the oppressive uncertainty lurking in the bush....Kapucsinski puts his reader right beside him as he bumps along that mine-strewn bush road. While his books are always long on atmosphere, they are often short on detail. But with 'Another Day,' your imagination has more than enough to feed on.

For those looking for the door into Kapucsinski-land, this little gem holds the key. More cohesive than 'The Soccer War,' more inspired than 'Shah of Shahs,' 'Another Day of Life' is the perfect intro to his African Queen, 'Shadow of the Sun.' So sink into your arm-chair and grab on tight, as this master story-teller takes you for a ride!

TWELVE-YEAR-OLD CASSIE HAS A LOT TO COPE WITH

when her father moves "out of the picture." Her mom's constantly working overtime, her teenage sister's going AWOL, and her little brother seriously needs attention. It's up to Cassie to prevent total chaos at home -- or so she thinks.

She can't control everything, though. At school Cassie's two "best" friends are turning nasty, and a cute boy is sending mixed signals. And then there's Mr. Mullaney -- the weirdest, hardest English teacher in the seventh grade -- who hates everything she does. Since Mr. Mullaney isn't even reading her brilliant work, Cassie starts submitting journal entries like "A Virtual Tour of My Insanely Messy Desk." But her sassy humor isn't winning her any friends or helping her ailing grades. What's a girl to do when life gets totally insane?

Barbara Dee has created a witty, poignant portrait of an intense, honest, feisty girl who is ferociously funny and only too human.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-04-04

We all feel like our own life is the most hectic, the busiest, and more demanding than anyone else's. That sometimes we are too busy with school and work that we hardly have time for ourselves. Unfortunately for Cassie, not only is her life hectic, but it is totally insane.

At the age of eleven, Cassie's parents decided to get a divorce and her father up and left. Usually, one of the parents gets to keep the lavish house that they all once lived in as a happy family, but no one ended up keeping the house. Instead, Cassie and her mom and two siblings all move into a run-down apartment, selling the car and the house. Now Cassie has to manage everything, especially since her mother is always working late, her older sister is forgetting to get the groceries or is always on the phone, and her little brother is just crying out for some attention.

It's not only home that's changing for Cassie. The two people she thought were her best friends seem to be turning on her, and at school her favorite subject is turning out to be a pain, all because of her teacher, Mr. Mullaney. Fortunately one good thing that comes out of that class is getting to write in a journal about anything she wants. That's where her imagination gets to thrive and Cassie finds peace. Let's just hope that Cassie can find a way to manage her new insane life.

JUST ANOTHER DAY IN MY INSANELY REAL LIFE is insanely hilarious. Cassie is that one character that every person is able to connect with, especially since most of us do have obnoxious siblings. The perfect read for anyone down in the dumps, Barbara Dee creates a cast of characters, along with the many excerpts from Cassie's journal, that will put a smile on everyone's face.

I was on page 30, and I just couldn't put Just Another Day in my Insanely Real Life down! Cassie the main character truly had an insane life at the age of 12. She had problems at school, a mother who worked full time and was divorced, a sister who didn't help her at home and a responsibility to care for her younger her very odd brother. To top it off, her dad has been missing for six months! I liked the book because I could really feel her emotions even though I don't struggle with the same problems. An example of this would be when she thought her teacher just graded her on the pages she wrote so she felt very frustrated. She went to talk to the teacher and he said that he graded her on the writing not the pages. Another example would be when her sister was supposed to take care of Cassie's brother but her sister never came home so Cassie had to take care of him. At that point Cassie was really mad at her sister, it had been her job to take care of her brother! This book made me insane because I couldn't put it down! I would give it four stars out of five.

5 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!!!!.......2006-07-11

It was a fantastic book with very descriptive words and chapters. I would recommend it to anyone. It is about a girl and her difficult life. The main character is Cassie. Her father left her, and she has to take care of her little brother. Her older sister is always out until after midnight, so Cassie has to do the cooking and cleaning plus her homework. It is a really good book so read it if you want but really try to read it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT book!!!!!.......2006-06-04

I am a 9 1/2 year old girl and I simply can't live without a good book like Just Another Day in My Insanely Real Life. I could not put the book down. The main character had the burden of keeping her family's life together. She expressed her feelings about this by writing stories in her English journal. She has a mean English teacher and her friends are not true friends. Her life gets scrambled and gushed all together at the same time. Barbara Dee writes this fantastic story of life. I can relate to it. I too write stories that help me with my feelings. I also ease my burdens by reading books like this. Two thumbs up and a hip-hip hooray for the book of the day!

5 out of 5 stars I JUST LOVED THIS BOOK . . . . .......2006-05-28

I am not a bookworm like my sister or brother but I was mesmerized by this book. I ate it up with such gusto that I simply cannot wait for Barbara Dee's next book for desert. It is a book for the agaes (and for ALL ages) - - everyone can relate to someone or some event contained in this fabulous book.

I love this book. I was highlighting this book until it looked like I painted all of the pages yellow (laugh). This book is a good book about financial prosperity. 'I'll Never Be Broke Another Day In My Life' should be on the bookshelves of every Believer. There are alot of Christians who are against teachings on financial prosperity. I'm not one of those Christians. I'm a Believer who wants to receive ALL that God has for me. I listend to the tape series (I'll Never Be Broke...) first and then I purchased the book.

Dr. Thompson shows you how you'll never have to worry about any lack or shortage in your life. The word 'broke' is not limited to just money, but it means 'to be without'. The principles in this book shows you how to no longer 'be without' healing; 'be without' wisdom; 'be without' the Anointing; and especially to 'be without' finances. I received full knowledge, wisdom, understanding, and revelation from the prophetic teachings from this book. I recommend this book for the prosperous Believers. I guarantee that after you read 'I'll Never Be Broke Another Day In My Life' you will be saying 'Me Too!'

5 out of 5 stars A valuable lesson learned in one day.......2003-11-20

When a boy named Davy is chosen "Most Valuable Player" on his junior soccer team, he is also chosen to be mayor for a day in his town. He is so excited to make his day fun, that he announces his day to be a day with no rules!

In the book, "Mayor for a Day," Davy thinks he'll have a great day when everyone in the town goes without any rules. Unfortunately, things get out of hand with no rules and Davy realizes that rules are a very important part of life.

MyParenTime.com highly recommends this book -- it teaches children that rules are indeed a very important part of daily life, and that the world cannot operate in an organized manner without them.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Author.......2001-08-09

A wonderful book with excellent values. We live in a world where people don't always understand why we need guidelines. This book teaches that rules and guidelines are important. In each of Mr. Sommer's books he teaches positive values in a way that kids can grasp their meaning.

    4 out of 5 stars Mayor For a Day.......2000-10-17

Mayor For a Day is about a boy who gets the chance to be the town Mayor. We have probably all wished at one time or another that we could make some rules disappear, but as Davy the young boy in this story finds out, the town turns into one big disaster. Everyone in town wants everything to go back to normal and Davy and the town learn an important lesson in citizenship and respect for the law. Citizenship is one of the many things my sons school teaches and this would be a great book for elementary schools who value the importance of good citizenship and teaching this to young children.

5 out of 5 stars Pow! Another hit book from A.J.Lamanda.......2006-03-14

Having enjoyed A.J.Lamanda's last book "One Way Ticket" I was hoping for another repeat performance from AJ. Fair to say I was not disappointed. AJ hits the mark once more with his latest book. An immensely enjoyable read that is full of humor, action and strong believable characters. The story moves along well and you will find it hard to put down. So, set some time aside and relax with A.J.Lamanda and the Mob for a trip down memory lane and a bittersweet story.

Another day in the the Life by Al Lamanda. I was anxious to read this book after reading his other book, "One Way Ticket". I found this book even better. Once I started, I couldnt stop reading. There was humor in the way he wrote and described the people and events, even though the storyline was a serious matter of a mob man stealing money from the organization. There was a good balance of fact vs fiction. It kept my interest and with humor , suspense and surprise , especially the final chapters. It also touched my heart bringing out some true meanings of life. I recommend this book to all.

        Book Description

Life is crazy. Your first memories are poverty, alcoholism, race problems, desegregation, war, Watergate and you're sick, too. Not just sick either, but the kind of “doctors don't have a clue” sick. But you soon learn life goes on, with or without you. In this coming of age memoir, Michael A. Page unfolds his story through the written word in a variety of forms and styles. In diary and journal entries, poems, short stories, essays and the occasional words of others he allows the reader to experience “the ride” and offers the message of hope and the possibility of redemption as he documents his struggles of life with his constant companion: anklyosing spondylitis.

          Book Description

404pgs-The Great Depression, Dust Bowl, and a Kansas tornado had left the Barber family reeling. Then came WW II and three sons were called to service. Air Corps planes began flying low level missions over the farm, capturing the imagination of yet a younger son, Paul. In this story of motivation, dedication and excellence, Paul Barber follows his dream, becomes an Air Force pilot, commands a flying unit, and with a simple statement, "Another Day in Which to Excel," challenges himself, his crews, and his family to be their very best. You will see the Cuban Missile Crisis from his vantage point; tag along on high altitude air-refueling missions; learn how the U.S. won the peace during the Cold War with the Soviets; feel the stress on him and his flight crews in the Vietnam War; and view near tragedies during critical phases of flight. You will understand his frustration in writing President Nixon's Plan of Withdrawal from Vietnam, as North Vietnam, seeing the discord in America, refuses to negotiate. In the Pentagon's National Military Command Center, you will observe crisis management at the highest level, as his team stands prepared to launch U.S. Nuclear Forces against the Soviet Union, if they attack America. You will witness his preparation of college ROTC students for military service, and finally, his preparation of older Americans for a financially secure retirement. Throughout this inspirational story, the strength of family and power of faith are highlighted. Reviews: "This is a fascinating story with great insights, a story written in ways that will interest people who appreciate our great American heritage, from the wheat fields of Kansas to the world-shaking events in the Pentagon and the White House. Historians, family leaders, church people, military personnel, farmers, financial specialists and others will find this book interesting reading. In it they will find wisdom and motivation for successful living. This book is confirmation of the power generated when an individual uses the combination of faith, family, education, and hard work to reach personal goals and live a productive and satisfying life." Patsy Johnson Hallman, Ph.D., Retiring Dean, College of Education, Stephen F. Austin State Univ., Nacogdoches, TX and author of "I HAD A TEACHER," "LETTERS FROM MISS EDNA," and several biographies of great leaders. "Another Day in Which to Excel is an exciting, interesting, and informative story that will be enjoyed by family, friends, people of faith, and those seeking inspiration and motivation in their lives. Writing by the same principle that has governed his life, Paul Barber's remarkable life story is a testimony of his desire to live in a way that pleases God." (1st Thess 4:1) Allen Reed, Dr. of Ministry, Senior Pastor, First Baptist Church, Nacogdoches, TX.
