I had to comment on the review by Publishers weekly.......2007-08-25
After reading the Publishers Weekly review I had to comment. This book is sweet and the pictures are lovely. The poems express the love that a parent has with their child so perfectly!
The cynical Publishers Weekly reviewer doesn't seem to appreciate the loving bong between parent and child. I could not help think that person is a fool, and/or has never been a parent themselves. As for me and my household, we enjoy sweet, happy and fun, in our books and most importantly our lives.
I wish Amazon would dump Publisher Weekly reviewers.
Ageless, timeless regarding love between parent and child.......2007-07-18
I discovered this book quite by accident. While waiting for an appointment - all the magazines were taken, however, the illustrated cover caught my attention. The words described the timeless love between a parent and child, and the illustrations almost touchable. Regardless of age, my daughter will always be "my I love you." It's a gift as she leaves for her second year of college to confirm our bond and remind her of the love we share, wherever we may be. The gentle language and soft illustrations express far more than the surface simplicity.
Sweet story.......2007-06-11
This is a sweet story to read to your kids. The pictures are lovely as well. My daughter loves it.
Love this book!.......2007-03-29
My 4 month-old baby and I love reading this book every night before he goes to bed.

Customer Reviews:
Best book I've ever read of things that should be said........2007-02-04
In my 61 years of male life experiences, this is my favorite book, for it puts to words human ideals that are so beneficial for people of all ages to understand.
I found this book by chance in a used book store and bought it to read, to reflect on my experiences with my two sons and two step-children. Immediately I realized that Kent had put to words the things I had wanted to say to my children, but didn't know how to express it.
I then bought 30 copies, giving them to my children and friends with children. I read it again, this time calling Kent and thanking him for writing his thoughts for me to share with others whom I love.
I'm here at Amazon again, sending a link to Kent's Letters to a friend, who's husband has died, leaving their teenage son so alone. I'm constantly recommending this book, as well as quoting from it to share thoughts with others. When my brother-in-law died a couple months ago, Kent's thoughts on Tragedy and Suffering were most comforting to my sister and her in-laws. I know Kent's thoughts on Falling In Love I've shared with others has mended many a broken hearts.
Kent's dedication page statement - "We are born male. We must learn to be men." implies it's a book for guys to read, but I know many gals who have found it a valuable read.
I was just on a lengthy trip, with a number of extended layovers. Knowing this, of all I could have chosen to bring to read to make that time most worthwhile, I brought Letters to my Son. And I'll read it again and again.
For years I've thought that too often people read one book after another, searching for something very meaningful to be made know to them. Here is a book I believe, if read a number of times in a thoughtful way, and taken to heart, it will be the most satisfying read ever. I've become certain that it's good enough to last my lifetime.
Father to Son to..............2006-02-28
I gave this book to my husband to give to our older son.
My husband liked it so much that he asked that I get
another for our younger son.
All seem to enjoy it very much.

a new father's best gift.......2004-11-17
I am 26 and I just became a father. I still feel like a kid myself. Someone gave me this book for a birthday present. I read it to see if these were letters I would send my son. They are not really letters but more like essays or thoughts. This man says so many things I wish I could say. He helps me understand what is important in my life, what is important to teach my boy when he gets old enough. I don't always agree with Kent Nerburn's thinking. But I think he is very wise. I wish my dad was like him. I hope I can be a dad like him. He knows what is important in life. He doesn't just preach or lecture. He unfolds his thinking with stories from his own life. Sometimes he made mistakes and he tells us. He learned. Now he is teaching me so I can teach my son.
Thanks, Kent Nerburn. You tell a good truth.
Disappointed.......2004-10-18
This book is nice, sweet, and somewhat insightful. But I wanted a book that spoke more of the relationship between a father and a son. The vast majority of essays/chapters in this book could have been written by anyone for anyone. For example, Nerburn warns of the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and extols the virtues of giving. But those lessons could have been taught by a mother to her daughter, a priest to a parishioner, or an uncle to a nephew. Many other essays in the book are similar in that they contain no unique perspective on the father-son relationship. (What does the "Power of Art" have to do with fatherhood?) This book reads like Chicken Soup for the Soul. In my opinion, the other reviews overrate this book.
The perfect gift.......2004-07-24
Over the years I have had read numerous books of this nature, but always find myself returning to read a section, a paragraph or a few pages. A wonderful book that I have had the opportunity to share with numerous friends. I think I have purchased at least 20 copies a gifts.
A must read.

Book Description
When Nancy Friday began her research for My Mother/My Self in the early 1970’s no work existed that explored the unique interaction between mother and daughter. Today psychotherapists throughout the world acknowledge that if women are to be able to love without possessing, to find work that fulfills them, and to discover their full sexuality, they must first acknowledge their identity as separate from their mother’s. Nancy Friday’s book played a major role in that acceptance. The greatest gift a good mother can give remains unquestioning love planted deep in the first year of life, so deep and anassailable that the tiny child grown to womanhood is never held back by the fear of losing that love, no matter what her own choice in love, sexuality, or work may be.
Through candid self-disclosure and hundreds of interviews, Friday investigates a generational legacy and reveals the conflicting feelings of anger, hate, and love the daughter’s hold for their mothers–and why they so often “become” that mother themselves.
Customer Reviews:
Light Weight.......2006-09-30
I was a therapeutic naif when I read MMMS years ago. The book resonated, but failed to illuminate the relationship between me and my adoptive and natal mothers in the way others have. (Such as the more scholarly -- and far more edifying -- work of Pierre Janet, Jean Piaget, Sigmund and Anna Freud, Erik Erikson, Karen Horney, John Bowlby, Mary Ainsworth, D. W. Winnicott, Margaret Mahler, Melanie Klein, Aaron Beck, Diana Baumrind, David Stern, and Bruce Perry.)
Clearly, the woman who -raises- the child has more opportunity to model her her values, her beliefs, her cognitive processes, her construction of character and resultant reactions to the world, than any other person in one's life. Moreover, much of influence this occurs when the child is so young that his or her own capacities to place such modeling under the light of critical thinking is wholly impossible.
For most of us, the critical thinking we devise by the time we are in our late teens, will, in fact, simply reflect -her- critical thinking.
If you are truly searching for answers to your child-parent dilemmae, I think the authors listed above are going to shed a lot more light than Friday does.
If you need a platform to begin your search, I'd recommend a good developmental psych text, the authors of which include people like Kathleen Berger, Ross Thompson, Alan Sroufe (one of the major experts in the area), Robert Cooper, Ganie deHart, John Dacey and John Travers. Or just buy a copy of Gerry Corey's Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy. (You don't need an expensive seventh edition; a cheap, used sixth will do fine. The first hundred pages will set you up pretty well for further detective work.)
Healing Ourselves through the Generations.......2006-06-08
Unless a woman has completley disconnected from her mother (successfully and has maintained it for several years) ... she stands a very high chance of being exactly like her or an extreme opposite to her instead of who she is as a unique person. This book by Nancy Friday explains why. One cannot cut the psychic umbilical cord alone, it takes effort, commitment, and intention to do so. A timeless book on how to heal and love who you are and where you came from while leaving the negative legacies behind.
Very important book.......2005-03-10
This is the kind of book that reading before and after motherhood will seem totally different. I still think about it, even though I haven't really read it in awhile, and I give it as gifts.
My Mother... My Opinion??.......2004-10-23
It took me a while to get into this book... there were several occasions where I tempted to give up on it.
I'm glad I stuck with it though.
Those of you with a difficult mother/daughter relationship will probably benefit from reading this book. I know I did. Even though the author isn't a mother (which does bother me a little), I feel that her theories make sense.
The version I have of this book is quite old and was published in 1977(I picked it up in a used bookstore). I'm not sure what type of editing has been done on newer versions but I'm sure the main message will be the same.
My Mother My Self would benefit women who would like a deeper understanding of their relationship with their own mother, and also their daughters. Men might like to read this to understand the complex dynamics of these relationships.
I've read better..........2003-12-07
This book was written for women, as such men will come away feeling that women are "really screwed up" about thier mothers, and while it does attempt to explain certian things, you do get the feeling that the author wants somebody to blame for the things that have gone wrong in her life... One wonders what her mother though on reading it, if she ever has.
Personally I think "Our Mother's Daughters" by Judith Arcana (published by The Women's Press) is a far better book, a far better read for men too, especially if you want to understand the woman your mother is, rather than the woman you would have her be.
I love my mother, I read her copies of both books, her mother is now dead, it took her a lifetime to deal with the pain, don't waste yours doing the same. Forgive and forget, we are only human after all.

Book Description
The basic premise of this book is that chemical dependency is a disease the alcoholic/addict is a sick person not a bad person. This disease affects not only the addicted person but those who love that person as well. This is a book that will help the "others" affected by chemical dependency to become well.
My Dad Loves Me My Dad Has A Disease was originally written as a result of Claudia Black's work with young people who had a parent in treatment for their alcoholism. These children were learning at a very young age that it was not safe for them to openly talk about their family experiences. Art therapy was a wonderful medium for them to find the words and a voice in which to talk honestly. It was also a wonderful tool in which to not only share feelings but to problem solve, lessen denial, and to put words to that which was so confusing.
The original pictures were all drawn and the stories written by children age five through fourteen that had one or two alcoholic parents. After many years and thousands of children using this workbook, it has been revised to address the fact that today, if a child lives with addiction, it may not be alcohol addiction. The family member may be addicted to other drugs as well. Words have been rewritten, some pictures changed and new pictures added making it possible for more children of addiction to experience their own recovery process.
Many years ago when Claudia Black was a counselor in an alcohol and drug treatment program, she asked a six-year-old daughter of a man in treatment for his addiction if she knew why her father was in this program. The girl paused and with confidence said, My Dad Loves Me, but My Dad Has a Disease. In spite of her father's addiction she knew her father loved her. That is a message Claudia would like all young people to be able to believe. Unfortunately when people are addicted they often lose the ability to act in loving ways toward those they love.Growing up in an addicted family usually means living by the rule: it is not all right to talk about the drinking or using in your family. Having been raised in an alcoholic family herself, by the age of six Claudia shared the feelings of loneliness, fear and frustration of her family.
Working through the loneliness, fear and frustration by expressing feelings is what this book is all about. This workbook gives children the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings and to better understand addiction.
Although this workbook was designed for and the illustrations created by young children, it may also hold insights for the now adult age person raised in an addictive home.
Customer Reviews:
Held my kids attention.......2007-09-26
Great book for explaining alcoholism to kids. They seemed to relate to the pictures. I will read it to them on occasion.
Children of Alcoholics - a young perspective.......2007-08-03
A rare find. While most other publications are geared to teenagers or adults living with addicted parents, this book offers younger children's perspectives. It combines young children's artwork and observations about the problems they have to cope with along with a helpful guide/workbook to help explain this disease. Reading through this with a 6 year old was an amazing experience. In the first chapter, she was able to recognize the signs and understand that others are going through the same experiences. I wish there were more books like this.
My Dad Loves Me, My Dad Has a Disease: A Child's View: Living with Addiction.......2007-05-26
This is one of the only resources I could find to aid in my work with children of addicts. It is easy to use and gives a good structure for addressing issues of addictions from a childs point of view.

Book Description
Sometimes daddies are loud and playful. Other times they are quiet and compassionate. And they are always loving. Sebastien Braun's appealing text and charming illustrations follow a day in the life of a bear and his bear cub in this celebration of the bond between father and child.
Customer Reviews:
Wanna know what a "daddy" does?.......2007-08-02
Then, check out this captivating look at the bond between father and son told in the simplistic dialog of a little bear. With poignant pictures by author/illustrator Sebastien Braun (perfect last name), little "readers" can relate to the love that is shared by the family duo.
This is a perfect "primer" for both the child and the dad that needs to know his role.
Cute book.......2007-07-26
This is a cute book. It's short and simple, which is easy to read to little ones. The illistrations are very pretty, also. Good gift to give as a baby shower gift or to a grown-up "from a child". (There is a page inside that says 'This book is to ______ with love".) I gave this book to my Brother-in-law but wrote inside that it was from his son.
Book review.......2006-11-04
This book is very nice. It was part of a gift to my husband when we found out I was pregnant.
Beautiful Book.......2005-09-14
This is a beautifully illustrated book that would be a sweet gift for the favorite daddy in your life. When my husband saw it he said, "you're such a sap". But then he went ahead and added it to his regular line-up of goodnight books for our little boy. :)
Great book for Grandma to read to Grandson.......2005-08-29
(I wrote a similar review for I Love My Mommy)
I bought this book for my grandson when he visits overnight. He LOVES it. I believe that he is comforted by the book. It's very simple, but the message is direct, and the illustrations are quite sweet. My grandson's parents often work at night or are in school and clearly he'd rather be with them, but this book is a reminder that even though he's with Grandma, his Mommy and Daddy love him lots.

It's always hard for Baby Bird and his mama to say good-bye on their way to school and work in the morning. But Mama finds a lilting, lyrical way of showing how her love is with her child all the time--and his love is with her, too.
But even when I'm far away,
this love I have will stay.
and wrap itself around you
every minute of the day.
Warm, reassuring feelings emanate from this lovely picture book. Mama Bird tells her child how her love slips inside his lunch box, sits upon his shoulder when he sings a happy song, and snuggles on his pillow while he naps. Jane Dyer, illustrator of the bestselling Time for Bed, creates positively touchable watercolors of a pudgy-cheeked preschooler bird and his working mom. Hints of hearts nestle playfully on the pages: on the blackboard under the letter H, and sewn onto his pillowcase. Oh My Baby, Little One will resonate deeply for moms and kids alike, and may make daily separations just a little bit easier.
So blow a kiss and wave good-bye--
my baby, don't you cry.
This love is always with you,
like the sun is with the sky.
(Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
When Baby Bird says good-bye to his mama at school each morning, he feels sad. Mama Bird feels sad, too. Sometimes it's hard to be apart. But as Mama Bird says, the love they share is with them always, keeping them close until the best part of the day--when they are together again. •From the illustrator of the bestselling Time for Bed, with more than 725,000 copies sold •A heartwarming story about the universal experience of parents and children being temporarily separated
Customer Reviews:
You miss me, and I miss you, and I must leave you for awhile........2007-08-10
Mama bird explains to baby bird, who misses her, how her love is with him throughout the day while she is at work. She tells him that she also misses him and finds his love with her. She also tells him that her greatest joy is when she comes home to him.
This is a good book for a working mother to read to her child (starting as young as possible) to reassure him/her and open up a conversation about the topic whenever needed. The pictures look just like my grandson when I babysit and he misses mommy.
Gift Of The Tortoise: A Musical Journey Through Southern Africa by Ladysmith Black Mambazo includes a song that the children sing when their mothers return from trading in the city (which may take days). It also has a song by a girl when she receives a gift from her father who works at a distance from the family and only sees them a few weeks a year.
Beautiful message!.......2007-07-12
I bought this book for myself when my first child was still a baby. It helped me with the drop off at preschool when she was a baby to know that our love was with each other when we were apart! I bought them this year when my sister-in-laws had their first baby girls and were headed back to work and they found them just as moving and sweet. What a great gift for any mom at any stage!
Childrens Books.......2007-05-13
This is one of the most beautiful and tender stories I've ever read about a working momy and the seperation she and her baby son must go through every day when she goes off to work and he goes to school. It helped me and my son a lot knowing that other families go through a similar process of separation anxiety. It also has beautiful pictures and eases the insecurities most little children go through when the aren't with their parents, I really recommend it.
Wonderful Illustrations.......2006-02-28
Large, soft, colorful illustrations attracted me to this book that I found at a book fair several years ago. I purchased this book for my "when I have children" book collection, and now that I have a son to read it to, it is a favorite for both of us. The story is a sweet rhyme and not too "wordy" for my toddler who does not sit still for very long. The illustrations are so pleasing to me, that I just completed a search for other books illustrated by Jane Dyer, and am excited by my new finds.
Finally I have made it through without tears..........2005-03-18
Stumbled across this in the library, (always scope out the books there first, in order to make sure "we" like them), the first oh, ten times, I read the book to my daughter I couldn't get through it without almost bawling. (And I only leave her twice a week, with her Grandma or Aunt). I don't think she understood (at 10 months) what was a matter with Mom. Now that I own it and have read it about 30 times, I can get through without tears and she really enjoys the story. It is told in a lovely rhyme, with beautiful illustrations.
If you are a working mom, or sending your child off to school, I highly recommend this book.

But Mommy explains that her heart has a special room for everyone. It has rooms for Mommy's parents, brothers, and sister. It has rooms for Daddy and their pet dog, Buster. And it has a room for Stephanie, too. There will be another room for the new baby, but the room in Mommy's heart for Stephanie will not be smaller. Mommy's heart is a magic house, with love enough for all.
This lovely new-baby book will comfort and reassure older siblings.
Customer Reviews:
Where was this book when I was a little girl?.......2007-07-02
I wish this book had been around when I was a little girl!
I am the fourth child in a sixth child family who was petrified to ask my parents if there was space in their hearts for me. I was more in the "pray, don't ask!" space because I didn't see how their hearts could POSSIBLY hold me along with everyone and everything else.
My fears would have been squelched through author Julie Jacobs beautiful and gentle approach to quieting the childhood fear of being displanced by "the baby". Through the metaphor of a heart with many rooms, we can visually "get" how the rooms in the heart expand according to whomever we welcome into our life. The rooms can expand, magically - and the Mom in the story carefully illustrates how her heart-rooms have changed over time.
Even small children will understand - and then will be able to explain to other children who are concerned.
Highly recommended.
My Heart Is A Magic House.......2007-04-03
What a charming and convincing way to assure children that the new baby will not diminish mother's love or attention. The delightful illustrations and the heartfelt words will make this a favorite not only of the young readers, but of parents too. I wish I had had this book when my second and third children were born. My grandchildren, fortunately, are able to enjoy it.
What a delightful book! You'll love it and so will your kids........2007-03-29
I just got this book and found it a really sweet, terrific book that sends an important message of how love makes us larger and that love is not a zero-sum game where if I have some you therefore get less.
It's illustrated w/ pretty pictures and interesting colors for kids to explore visually and the cadence of the book is very reassuring.
I think any young child would enjoy hearing this story read to him/her and any parent would like the healthy message it sends to a child.
I'm very much looking forward to other books written by this nifty author.

Customer Reviews:
A beautiful book!.......2005-04-13
You don't have to speak Spanish to enjoy this book. The drawings are beautiful and the words on each page are really touching. My 2-year-old son loves to identify the animals in the pictures and who could argue with sentiments like "I love my mommy because she keeps me warm and safe." I would highly recommend this book to anyone! The words are all printed in Spanish and English, including the names of the animals on each page.

Through simple, moving text and endearing illustrations, Sebastien Braun captures the spirit of motherhood in a celebration for every mother and child.
Customer Reviews:
Cute.......2007-07-26
This is a cute book. It's short and simple, which is easy to read to little ones. The illistrations are very pretty, also. Good gift to give as a baby shower gift or to a grown-up "from a child". (There is a page inside that says 'This book is to ______ with love".) I gave this book to my sister but wrote inside that it was from her son. She thought it was too cute.
A wonderful book.......2005-10-04
I bought this book for my 5 year old son, and he absolutely loves it. He can now read the book by himself. The pictures are stunning, and the story is simple. Highly recommended.
Comfort book for little ones.......2005-08-29
I bought this book for my grandson when he visits overnight. He LOVES it. I believe that he is very comforted by the book. Its simple, but the message is direct, and the illustrations are quite sweet. Grandson's parents work at night or are in school and clearly he'd rather be with them, but this book is a reminder that even though he's with Grandma, his Mommy and Daddy love him lots.
Beautiful Book.......2005-07-28
I highly recommend Sebastien Braun's books for their artwork and craftsmanship. Braun's work is unique; I have not seen other children's books quite like his.
I have "I love my Mommy" and "I love my Daddy", both are excellent.
Pleased, but not baby friendly.......2005-02-18
The book is great. The pictures are nice and it is simple and easy to read to a baby or toddler. My only complaint is that I think that this book should come as a board book. That way I don't have to constantly worry about the pages being ripped. My toddler likes to hold the book while I read.
