Book Description

William Wilberforce is now remembered mainly for his leadership of the two great crusades to abolish the Slave Trade and later to free the slaves. He took up their cause when he was in his twenties and received the news of their freedom on his deathbed at the age of seventy-three. Abolition was the most famous of his causes but there were many others. He sat in Parliament for nearly fifty years, where he voted and spoke entirely as his conscience dictated and had more influence than any other member it its history who never held office. His power in the country was even greater. His own life bridged the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He knew George III, Louis XVI and Lord North, also Macaulay, Gladstone and Newman. Robin Furneaux (1936-1985) was the first biographer to have had access to the Wilberforce papers. He also visited the United States to study Wilberforce documents in various American collections and travelled in the West Indies and West Africa. Furneaux was 3rd Earl of Birkenhead and took an Honours Degree in history at Oxford.

This is perhaps the best biography of Wilberforce, apart from that of his sons. It will be interesting to see the quality of William Hague's biography, which will be published later this year.

4 out of 5 stars A very interesting volume.......2004-05-16

What a great book! Especially for we who grew up in the '40s and '50s and later became air force pilots. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, a bond drive aircraft arrived at our local airport. It was an O-47 observation plane, with a real machine gun in the rear hatch. What a thrill for a 10 year old. Of course as I grew older, I realized that the old O-47 was a pretty sorry example of America's might, but things were really different in the early 40's. However, it was very gratifying to see an article in this book about flying that aircraft in those early years. There are thousands of accounts of WW2 flying out there, almost all devoted to the outstanding aircraft of those times. This book, however has many an article devoted to how it was to fly the other unsung aircraft. There are not too many pilot accounts of flying the P-39, the P-40 in Italy, the C-54 in ATC service much less the B-18, B-10 and the old C-46. Really a must read for those who remember those early war years.

3 out of 5 stars A Hollywood Point of View.......2006-11-25

My personal opinion was that this book was written for people who wanted to know what it was like for Robin Williams in Hollywood. I feel the author does too many take offs on other actors and actresses he names in the book and also on movies and TV shows mentioned. I wished for a true insight into the life of Robin, what kind of person he is and what kind of childhood he experienced. In the preface or early it is stated that Robin's lawyer is not in support of this author writing this book and that lawsuits will follow if needed, so this leads me to believe there is not a lot of substantial facts for the basis. i am enjoying gleaning what I can.

4 out of 5 stars Robin every which way buy straight forward.......2005-08-12

This books tells the story of Robin Williams but jumps around the point, and discusses things in a very sentimental way. It is as if Dougan is afraid to say something straight out. It's a simple book going strictly chronologically through Robin's life. The book has good information and very interesting but it concentrates on Robin's career more than the man himself. Yet still, it is worth reading.

2 out of 5 stars "Something about Robin Williams".......2004-05-02

or "Robin Williams - who is he?" - these would be more correct titles for the book. Since the book tells us something about Robin Williams. And does not answer the question, on who he really is. Despite its rather promising beginning, with the clues to Williams' character being searched through his childhood and a general atmosphere of turbulent 60s, the book does not go far in developing its few ideas. It looks like the author is sinking in unnecessary details of TV and movie production process, which have little to do with Robin Williams as a person and an actor. I hope that one of my favorite actors will come up with his own autobiography, and the book's title "Robin Williams" will be trully justified.

1 out of 5 stars What do you expect from an unauthorized biography?.......1999-02-28

If you want to read a two hundred fifty page tabloid, then look no further. Andy Dougan's choice of words, for the presintation of Robin's life, contains too many of his personal opinions and feelings. If I wanted to read about someone's feelings, then I would wait for Robin to write an autobiography. Since the book has such an informal tone the "facts" about Robin's life are easily questioned. This book will be recorded as the longest tabloid article in history.

4 out of 5 stars Very good biography.......1999-02-10

I saw this book on the table at the local library and decided to read it, though I am not that big a fan of Mr. Williams.

I found this biography to be really top notch, highly readable, having just enough details without being excessive. The book is an intimate portrayal yet is not intrusive. While the author acknowledges at the outset that his book is an "unauthorized" biography, you wouldn't know it - the quotes from Williams, his two wives, and close associates are very poignant, as if given while being interviewed for this biography.

The author does a fine job of tracing Williams life from childhood in Detroit through his beginnings as a performer in San Francisco and at the Julliard School in New York. There he becomes close friends with Christopher Reeve. The friendship lasts through the years, and the chapter where Williams flies to be with Reeve after the latter's tragic 1995 horse-riding accident, cheering him up as he has cheered up many other fellow entertainers, is very moving.

The book traces Williams career in TV and the movies (while always mentioning Williams countless live comedy club performances) with care and thoroughness. The chapters on Mork and Mindy are interesting, followed by Williams' lack of box-office success in "Popeye," "Moscow on the Hudson," and the disastrous "Club Paradise." While having trouble making it in the movies, Williams also has a lot of personal problems. Again, this part of Williams' life is handled carefully, with detail, but without excess, and also has a happy outcome when he bonds with his second wife, who later produces another of Williams' huge successes, "Mrs. Doubtfire."

Finally, in his 8th film, Williams makes the big time with an outstanding performance in "Good Morning, America." He is nominated for academy awards in this film, "Dead Poets Society," and "The Fisher King," but does not win. I assume that synchronistically while the author was writing this book, Williams finally breaks through with an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in "Good Will Hunting," which is described in the book's epilogue. It seems like a fitting conclusion, yet the author also discusses Williams next 3 movies, as he is a tireless performer!

Highly recommended if you like Robin Williams work at all.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Biography misses the Mork........2007-08-16

A 2007 summer reading list mini review.

I have been an ardent fan of the humor of Robin Williams equal parts manic and cerebral since his debut on Happy Days some 30 years ago. So, when I saw this book at my local library, I checked it out thinking that I would be treated to some of his crazier routines like this one from Mork and Mindy:

Mork: (reporting to Orson) They even have a religion that worships O.J. Simpson.
Orson: The Juice?
Mork: Yeah, and the gentiles too.

What I got instead was a biography that after a good glimpse of his childhood years focused too much on the obvious and also on unneeded periphery from his work.

Examples of this are an approximately two page plot synopsis of Mrs. Doubtfire, and a penchant from listing at least 3 other films for each director Williams ever worked with. Aside from unnecessary, some of the periphery is also inaccurate. When speaking of the immense popularity of Happy Days the author tells us that Laverne and Shirley ran for 4 seasons, it ran for 8.

I will have to give the author, Jay David, some credit. It takes a certain kind of talent to write about such a colorful figure as Williams and make it come out dry.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Vanilla Biography.......2004-03-14

It is difficult to write a biography that only goes for 200 pages unless it is the Reader's Digest version of the person's life. Jay David essentially has written a stripped down biography of Robin Williams. After reading the book, I feel I have only scratched the surface of this talented actor/comedian's life and talents.

Much of Robin's early life is cited from previous interviews with other sources. While this is acceptable, it makes the early part of the book seem like a "cut and paste" job. The book journeys into his early career and family life with similar techniques. When the book arrives at the point where Robin Williams' career really takes off, the author becomes consistent with the layout of the chapters. The first part is how Williams came to work on the movie/project with various antidotes. The second part of the chapters is a documentation of the critical reviews of the movie. I felt a lot was omitted from the book. Nothing is mentioned about his hosting Saturday Night Live. Similary, little is mentioned of his stand-up work or Comic Relief. I would have thought they would have included more of Robin Williams' humor in here since the book is called "The Life and Humor of Robin Williams".

The book does have strong points. I did learn about Williams family and marital life. Few people are aware that Williams came from a privilaged family background. I also believe that the insight provided on many of the movies is well documented. One must keep in mind that the book was printed in 1999 so it is not entirely up to date. With this being said, fans of Williams will enjoy learning about the development of his career. Despite being an easy read, the book has too many weak points to be enjoyed by the casual reader.

Every generation or so, a team comes along whose march toward victory is so improbable that you can't help but root them along. The 1950 Philadelphia Phillies was that kind of team; young and spirited, the Whiz Kids played a raw, emotional brand of baseball, nipping the Brooklyn Dodgers on the final day of the season to bring the National League's perennial doormat its first title in 35 years. Hall-of-Fame member Robin Roberts, the team's ace starter, peppers his recollections with snippets of oral history from his teammates to produce a book as lively as the team itself.

Book Description

The 1950 Phillies unexpectedly captured the hearts and imaginations of Philadelphians. A young upstart team—in fact, the youngest major league baseball team ever fielded—they capped a Cinderella season by winning the pennant from the heavily favored Brooklyn Dodgers in Ebbets Field on the last day of the season. It was the first National League pennant for the team since 1915. With that dramatic victory the 1950 Phillies went into the history books, known forever as the Whiz Kids.

This inspiring era in Phillies history comes alive with the personal reflections of Robin Roberts, a Hall of Famer and arguably the best right-handed pitcher in Phillies history. Roberts recounts the moves, the trades, and the developments that put this young and talented team together. Co-author C. Paul Rogers III interviewed many of the other players from that memorable season, and even manager Eddie Sawyer. Their recollections, accompanied by more than 80 black-and-white photographs, offer an uncommon look at what went into building the extraordinary Whiz Kids. Rich with anecdotes never before published from players like Hall-of-Famer Richie Ashburn, Bubba Church, Andy Seminick, Curt Simmons, Del Ennis, Dick Sisler, Russ Meyer, and many others, this book relives the success of the Whiz Kids in all their glory.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Material for Phils fans.......2002-10-09

"The Whiz Kids" met my expectations. It is great material for Phillies fans. Having grown up hearing the names of Ennis, Ashburn, Konstanty, Roberts and the rest, I wanted to read a good account of the first Phils pennant since 1915.

The ever humble Roberts (with the help of a professional writer) recounts his rise to the major leagues as well as the futile history of Phillies baseball. It's a nice, easy to read story that follows a tried formula: the team has a long history of losing, young players come aboard and develop into a close team, they exceed expectations and go to the World Series. There are plenty of scenes that flesh out the personalities and struggles of the team mates. Plenty of train trips and hotel stays. Tough game situations yeilding exciting victories or close defeats. Those looking for deep insights into the era should look elsewhere. In fact, I see this book aimed primarily at us Phils fans. Our banners are few, so we need to raise them high. These aren't Duke Snyder, Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese and the other "Boys of Summer." The Phillies of this era had one great year surrounded by several decent years. Only a couple of the names stand out these years later.

I give the book four stars because it served its purpose for me. If you are looking for light reading material about a cinderalla team, this could be for you as well.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Fills A Historical Void.......2002-03-08

Authors Paul Rogers and former Whiz Kid pitcher Robin Roberts have done a great job in bringing a memorable team back to life. Baseball books on teams usually involve New York teams and it is refreshing to read a book about a team that will always be remembered, not just by Phillies' fans, but by baseball fans across the country. Many of the names I came across in this book were merely pictures on baseball cards I started buying in the early '50's and this book provided me with some insight into their accomplishments on the ball diamond. There is a story behind each of those players' names I have in my mind, and the authors brought them to life in this book. If there was one drawback, if I may call it that, I found an excessive amount of play-by-play among the pages. However, I can live with that. The names of Robin Roberts, Curt Simmons, and Richie Ashburn are household baseball names, but I was also happy to read about lesser lights like Bubba Church, Mike Goliat, and Stan Lopata who were only pictures on baseball cards to me. Phillies' fan or not, if you like baseball history, you will enjoy this book.

4 out of 5 stars WHIZ KIDS A WINNER.......2000-11-19

This is a very well written account about a team that captured the hearts of an entire city. This is a great account of the surprising achievment of the 1950 Phillies. The excellent interviews of the players involved and the rehashing of the author is great. A very nostalgic and fact filled retelling of an exciting and fun filled year in baseball. A must read for all Phillie and historical baseball buffs.

5 out of 5 stars Baseballs Wonderful" Whiz Kids" remembered.......1998-11-24

If you love baseball history-especially the immediate post-war years 1947-50 this gem of a remembrance is for you. Hall-of-famer Robin Roberts has combined with author Paul Rogers to relive those years when baseball, after a decline during WW2,regained its preeminance as America's national game and with integration and night games, embarked upon a 25 year golden era that may never be duplicated in professional sports. Using Roberts near photographic memory, oral history, and excellent research, author Rogers provides a rich fast-paced narrative that culminates with the miracle season of 1950 when a brash group of youngsters know as the Whiz Kids(Roberts,Richie Ashburn,Del Ennis,Granny Hamner,Curt Simmons,Willie Jones,Mike Goliat, and Stan Lopata)combined with a few seasoned veterans(Jim Konstanty,Andy Seminick,Dick Sisler, and Eddie Waitkus to stun the baseball world by defeating the Brooklyn Dodgers on the final day of the season in one of the most dramatic games in the history of baseball. The authors cover the development of the team from 1947 on and do not shy away from the controversies of the period such as the race-baiting of Jackie Robinson during his rookie year(the Phillies were prominently involved and it may have been a big factor in the firing of manager Ben Chapman)and the near fatal shooting of Eddie Waitkus. While the authors admirably document the contributions of every member of the team, skillfully pointing out that every member contributed something that won at least one game, two facts clearly emerge-without Jim Konstanty's record breaking performance as the seasons premier relief pitcher and the job of manager Eddie Sawyer there was no way the Phillies would have one the pennant. In fact it is in some ways the story of Eddie Sawyer(one of baseballs best kept secrets as a gentleman and manager) that drives the narrative to its apex. Read the book and see the unique approach to managing men that Sawyer brought to the game,an approach that is at once so logical and appealing that it seems easy until you try it. Baseball could use some Eddie Sawyers today. As a matter of fact,a few more Robin Roberts wouldn't hurt either. One hopes that Roberts and Rogers will combine their talents and continue the Roberts story after the 1950 season as the great right-hander was an eyewitness to the momentous growth and change that occurred in baseball during his 18 year career. This a truly outstanding addition to the library of anyone who values and loves baseball history.

4 out of 5 stars Last gasp of an old regime.......1997-09-21

This is another boonie dog book review by Wolfie and Kansas. We were somewhat amused when we first heard the title of Robin Roberts and C. Paul Rogers III's book, "The Whiz Kids and the 1950 Pennant". To us dogs, a "whiz kid" is an unhousebroken puppy. However, these Whiz Kids were the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team, and this is a book about humans playing fetch. While this is not a literary gem like Roger Kahn's "The Boys of Summer", it is an above-average baseball book comparable to another recent book by a pitcher from the same era, Don Larsen's "The Perfect Yankee". We recommend this book to all baseball fans. It is in the must-read category for any Phillies fan.

We do have two reservations about "The Whiz Kids and the 1950 Pennant". The first concerns the portrayal of Jim Konstanty, the relief pitcher who was the 1950 National League MVP. One of our noncanine animal companions of primate derivation (who has loaned us his habit of shameless namedropping for purposes of this review) was a regular customer at Mr. Konstanty's sporting goods store in the mid-1960's. He remembers Mr. Konstanty as being far more personable than one would gather from this book. Of course, the pressures of making a record number of appearances during a tight pennant race could affect one's affability.

Also, while not shying away from the issue, Roberts and Rogers do not fully develop the ironic theme that the Whiz Kids, a supposed youth movement and potential future dynasty, were actually the dying embers of a fading era. The 1950 Phillies were the last all-white National League pennant winners, edging out the Jackie Robinson/Roy Campanella/Don Newcombe Dodgers in extra innings on the final day of the season. With the Phillies management dragging its heels as to recruiting and signing the best available ballplayers regardless of race, the remainder of the National League pennants in the 1950's went to the Dodgers, the Giants (with Willie Mays and Monte Irvin) and the Braves (with Hank Aaron). (Given the arguments as to whether the current millenium ends in 1999 or 2000, we should perhaps add the 1960 Pirates with Roberto Clemente to that list.) Not only did this relegate the Phillies to the second division, but it probably also cost author Roberts the chance to win 300 games. It would be interesting to see David Halberstram analyze the 1950 National League pennant race in a manner similar to his analysis of the 1964 World Series in "October 1964"

I felt this book was interesting and useful in my research concerning the life and work of W. Somerset Maugham. Robin, Somerset's nephew, adds interesting insights into the life and heritage of the Maughams. The book is mainly about Somerset Maughams as well as a genelogy of the Maughams.

    Book Description

Real-Life Reader Biographies present the lives of contemporary role models for young readers. These are the stories of real men and women who, despite many obstacles, followed their dreams.

Robin Williams has been called "the funniest man alive." It is not an exaggeration. Though he grew up in a wealthy home, his comedy routines began as the result of loneliness when he was a youngster. He was the only child of older parents, who each had a grown son from previous marriages.

Robin's favorite comedian was Jonathan Winters, who specialized in creating different characters with funny voices. Robin would practice all the routines that Winters did. He then created his own characters and his own voices, often to make his mother laugh. It is not surprising that his claim to fame would be in a TV show about a nutty extraterrestrial named Mork. Garry Marshall's hit show Mork and Mindy during the late 70's gave Robin just the vehicle he needed to create his fame.

But, Robin is very serious about his comedy: "You're only given a little spark of madness," he says. "You musn't lose that madness."

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun! Very highly recommended.......2001-05-16

Robin Williams is only eleven years older than I am, so I guess you could say I grew up with him. Mork and Mindy were primary staple when I was in high school. So when I found THE ROBIN WILLIAMS SCRAPBOOK on sale, I couldn't resist. And in only the first couple of pages, I knew it was a bargain at any price.

Intersperses with the necessary "place of birth" type information, Stephen Spignesi recounts Williams' life from the perspective of Williams' body of work. The book's chapters each represent Williams' work in chronological order as it relates to his life. Written in an engaging, immediate tone, the reader can't help becoming a part of the flow of the text, and the "legalized insanity" of William's life.

As I read, the book's humane, honest, and humorous tidbits that kept my emotions engaged. Learning of Williams' support of actor Christopher Reeve following the accident), his perchance for sexual humor and play, and his favorite joke. Filled with photos, stories of performances, and peaks into his personal life, THE ROBIN WILLIAMS SCRAPBOOK is a fascinating, must read for Williams fans. Very Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A very informative book, with great photos........1999-03-08

I recommend this book to anyone who likes Robin Williams. It is very well written, with lots of great pictures - and not just the ones that you always see. The book deals with a lot of what Robin has done on stage and on television, as well as his movie career. It also has chapters on Comic Relief, several interviews, and even a puzzle.

These are some of the things I really enjoyed in this book:
The highlights from An Evening With Robin Williams and the summary of An Evening at the Met.
The short descriptions of all the Mork and Mindy episodes, and the extensive summaries of the very first episode and the episode called Mork Meets Robin Williams.
The account of Mad Magazine's parody of Mork and Mindy: Shmork and Windy.
    The long, interesting interviews.
The comments to each of Robin's movies, from Popeye in 1980 to Hamlet in 1997. First Spignesi says what the movie is about, and what he thinks, then comes what the critics said. Often we also get to hear something Robin said about the movie.
(This review is part of my comment on the book on my homepage.)

5 out of 5 stars Best book available on the Funniest Man Alive!.......1999-01-27

Steve's really done a great job with this book. It covers anything and everything you could ever want to know on Robin's work up to "Hamlet." Lots of great photos, too. If you're a fan of Robin, a fan of one of his films, or just like movies in general, this is a fabulous book to have.
