Sometime during the last 30 years, the service economy emerged as the dominant engine of economic activity. At first, critics who were uncomfortable with the intangible nature of services bemoaned the decline of the goods-based economy, which, thanks to many factors, had increasingly become commoditized. Successful companies, such as Nordstrom, Starbucks, Saturn, and IBM, discovered that the best way to differentiate one product from another--clothes, food, cars, computers--was to add service.
But, according to Joseph Pine and James Gilmore, the bar of economic offerings is being raised again. In The Experience Economy, the authors argue that the service economy is about to be superseded with something that critics will find even more ephemeral (and controversial) than services ever were: experiences. In part because of technology and the increasing expectations of consumers, services today are starting to look like commodities. The authors write that "Those businesses that relegate themselves to the diminishing world of goods and services will be rendered irrelevant. To avoid this fate, you must learn to stage a rich, compelling experience."
Many will find the idea of staging experiences as a requirement for business survival far-fetched. However, the authors make a compelling case, and consider successful companies that are already packaging their offerings as experiences, from Disney to AOL. Far-reaching and thought-provoking, The Experience Economy is for marketing professionals and anyone looking to gain a fresh perspective on what business landscape might look like in the years to come. Recommended. --Harry C. Edwards
Book Description
You are what you charge for. And if you're competing solely on the basis of price, then you've been commoditized, offering little or no true differentiation. What would your customers really value? Better yet, for what would they pay a premium? Experiences. The curtain is about to rise, say Pine & Gilmore, on the Experience Economy, a new economic era in which every business is a stage, and companies must design memorable events for which they charge admission. With
The Experience Economy, Pine & Gilmore explore how successful companies-using goods as props and services as the stage-create experiences that engage customers in an inherently personal way. Why does a cup of coffee cost more at a trendy cafe than it does at the corner diner or when brewed at home? It's the value that the experience holds for the individual that determines the worth of the offering and the work of the business. From online communities to airport parking, the authors draw from a rich and varied mix of examples that showcase businesses in the midst of creating engaging experiences for both consumers and corporate customers.
The Experience Economy marks the debut of an insightful, highly original, and yet eminently practical approach for companies to script and stage compelling experiences. In doing so, all workers become actors, intentionally creating specific effects for their customers. And it's the experiences they stage that create memorable-and lasting-impressions that ultimately create transformations within individuals. Make no mistake, say Pine & Gilmore: goods and services are no longer enough. Experiences are the foundation for future economic growth, and
The Experience Economy is the playbook from which managers can begin to direct new performances.
Download Description
Future economic growth lies in the value of experiences and transformations--good and services are no longer enough. We are on the threshold, say authors Pine and Gilmore, of the Experience Economy, a new economic era in which all businesses must orchestrate memorable events for their customers. The Experience Economy offers a creative, highly original, and yet eminently practical strategy for companies to script and stage the experiences that will transform the value of what they produce. From America Online to Walt Disney, the authors draw from a rich and varied mix of examples that showcase businesses in the midst of creating personal experiences for both consumers and businesses. The authors urge managers to look beyond traditional pricing factors like time and cost, and consider charging for the value of the transformation that an experience offers. Goods and services, say Pine and Gilmore, are no longer enough. Experiences and transformations are the basis for future economic growth, and The Experience Economy is the script from which managers can begin to direct their own transformations.

too much 'flowers' in conveying the message.......2007-06-20
When I bought this book, I hoped Mr Pine will more describe about the ultimate power of new era, the experience economy, and how that change should be adapted quickly for many variety industries settings to get survive. Meaning, I expect to find a practical guidance to overcome the battle.
I found many ideas poured into this book mostly already existed in some other books (not written by Joseph Pine, for sure), for instance putting the experience as value added in consumer goods to increase consumers' emotional benefits. In doing so, the manufacturer can have premium price to outdo the competition. I've heard of it as many as the idea of how to serve consumers in a new different way by using internet as interactive tool to preserve their satisfactions and to use it as new channel of distribution. I really hope he came up with new striking and distinctive ideas, not those hackneyed ones.
I somewhat think this book a little bit hard to understand. Mr Pine used and picked up some unusual vocabularies to convey his message. I always fall asleep everytime reading it. Surprising that it takes me a week to consume 2-3 pages whilst I spend a week to finish Harry Potter - Goblet of Fire in English version.
However, I thank to Joseph for inspiring me some new vocabs.

Rarely do we get a truly new model to work with. This book provides a genuine breakthrough in how our life experience can be designed.
Used for Designers.......2007-03-30
I am a college instructor in Web and Interactive design and development. I have used this book and the audio version as the cornerstone of my opening lectures each semester. All the concepts and tenents put forward apply to user Interface design that I use this book as part of my UX-User Experience driven courses. Understanding how we got here and having an idea of where we are going allows tommorrow's designers to create "experiences" today.
This should be on every design students required reading list....
New Views of the Tried and the True.......2007-01-29
'Sell the sizzle and not the steak' was originated by legendary salesman and motivational speaker Elmer Wheeler way back in the 1930s and brought up to date with current examples of what companies have done to create an 'experience' is the theme of this book. Is the content new? Well, YES! And Well, NO!
I went out to dinner Friday night. I met with friends at a local restaurant, we had a couple of drinks in the lounge and then moved into the restaurant for dinner. I had a steak, just like in the phrase. It was no better than the steak I could have bought at the local supermarket for a third or less of the cost. It wasn't prepared any better than I can do on my grill. But the experience of ending the work week with friends, drink, good food made it worth the money that I spent.
In recent years this has been termed good service. And it is. But it's more than that, it was a nice evening, a good experience.
This book uses theatre terminology and stories from various companies to explain and illustrate how to take almost any business and convert it to 'experience' orientation rather than just providing a product or service.
Is it new and different, YES! But it is based on the tried and true.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Excellent book! (I scored 800).......2005-02-05
This is an truely excellent book. I am not fortunate to have a very deep chemistry curriculum available in the schools in my city (it is actually well recognized as being terrible) but after completing all the chemistry courses available to me I ordered this book off Amazon and realized how much I did not know. I probably spent about 30 mins a night every night give or take for a month, near the end studying several hours everyday. The lab questions in this book, what I found to be the most difficult part, are largely useless and are not on the actual exam but are still good practice.
I would however advise this book for only those seeking to achieve high scores because the content is somewhat difficult and demanding. Good luck
Extraneous info...myriad typos.......2004-06-02
This book has a lot of information in it, but the extraneous matter shifts your focus away from the important stuff that's actually covered on the test. The practice tests in the book in no way reflect the real ones. Worst of all, there are countless mistakes, typos, and missing answers. Don't buy this book.
Long and Detailed Review.......2003-06-08
The Barron's SAT II Chemistry book is extremely long and detailed and has tests that exaggerate difficulty. Each chapter does a good job of covering the core material but it also adds alot of extra information that will probably not be seen on the test. In fact, in the nuclear chemistry section, the book goes into sub atomic particles known as quarks, which havent been seen on the test in ages. The practice tests at first are very pessimistic and are quite difficult.
Yet, if you do study this book completely, take the practice test and correct your answers, there is no reason you shouldnt get an 800 on the SAT II. I found the exaggerated difficulty annoying at sometimes, but, its a tough way of forcing you to do good. In short, if you have plenty of time to prepare for the SAT II, buy this book, and do it cover to cover. Your results should be wonderful.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK!!!.......2002-10-13
Way too much unneccessary information. It's too compact. Most of the stuff do not appear on the real SAT II. It will give you a migraine every time you intend to study from it. But if you do buy this book, stay away from the laboratory setups, and do not attempt to memorize anything. It's useless and come test day you will be juggling pieces of rubbish in your head.
Chem SATII Review by a Chemistry Teacher.......2002-05-29
An excellent Chem SATII prep guide--includes 5 practice tests with correct answers and their explanations, test breakdowns by subject matter, and chemistry content summaries by topic.
Cautions:
Be aware that there are some typos/incorrect answers to test questions. The book also emphasizes laboratory set-ups and some chemical reactions that aren't likely to be part of ANY high school chemistry curriculum for safety reasons (i.e., collection of H2S and HCl gases); nor are they part of most current Chem SAT II tests.
Book Description
"The first complete and definitive account of the Battle of Tarawa."
--Maj. Gen. Mike Ryan, USMC (Ret.)
Navy Cross recipient
Green Beach, Tarawa
On November 20, l943, in the first trial by fire of America's fledgling amphibious assault doctrine, five thousand men stormed the beaches of Tarawa, a seemingly invincible Japanese island fortress barely the size of the Pentagon parking lots (three-hundred acres!). Before the first day ended, one third of the Marines who had crossed Tarawa's deadly reef under murderous fire were killed, wounded, or missing. In three days of fighting, four Americans would win the Medal of Honor. And six-thousand combatants would die.
Now, Col. Joseph Alexander, a combat Marine himself, presents the full story of Tarawa in all its horror and glory: the extreme risks, the horrific combat, and the heroic breakthroughs. Based on exhaustive research, never-before-published accounts from Marine survivors, and new evidence from Japanese sources, Colonel Alexander captures the grit, guts, and relentless courage of United States Marines overcoming outrageous odds to deliver victory for their country.
"Without a doubt the best narrative of the struggle ever produced."
--Richard B. Frank, Author of Guadalcanal

Utmost Bravery.......2007-10-05
Excellent military history of one of the bloodiest battles in the WW2 Pacific theater. Col. Alexander does a terrific job of setting the table for the battle by outlining the strengths and weaknesses of both sides. He points out why Tarawa was important to both the Japanese and American military forces. He highlights ALL the commanders with excellent biographical insights into not only their character but their training and backgrounds as well. He explains how Tarawa was fortified and why the new amphibious landing doctrine was a gamble that had to pay off. He makes the reader aware of ALL the military and political forces that were in play in November of 1943. In essence, it was high drama for both the Japanese and Americans. Japan was at its WW2 zenith but felt and knew that 1943 was the key to victory or slow defeat. America had passed its nadir and was quickly becoming the true power in the Pacific. Both sides were equal militarily in the Pacific when the battle of Tarawa was fought in November of 1943. After the bloody American victory the tide turned against the Japanese in favor of the Americans. Almost 2 more years of hard fighting would occur but the dye was caste. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was right, "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve." Tarawa showed that the sleeping giant was fully awake and would not be denied.
Col Alexander's graphic narrative of the 3 day battle was clear, concise, and done in a novelistic style. It was very easy to read with the gritty feel of battle and terror of combat coming through loud and clear. Gripping at times as my heart broke for the men who endured this horrific ordeal. Courage was everywhere as men did what they had to do to be victorious. The enemy was equally courageous as they fought to a bloody conclusion, but, in the end the might and will of America's fighting man won out.
Highly recommended not only for the military historian or WW2 buff, but for the everyday lay person too. Understanding our past is prologue to our future. Very uplifting.
Gripping reading.......2007-01-19
The narrative of the Battle for Betio island is an excellant account from a number of perspectives. It reads like good fiction, which good history (in my humble opinion) should do. It is well written and researched. It is grand in sweep, describing the evolution of combined amphibious warfare and its first official trial on the Tarawa atoll. Its descriptions of the men involved are very solid and fairly deep. It has numerous antecdotes of individual and small group encounters against the backdrop of the grand American pacific strategy.
The maps are good but I would have liked to see more on different paper for easy reference.
If you are a World War II buff in particular or a military history buff in general, you should have this as an addition to your library.
Utmost Bravery.......2006-11-04
Under the definition of "bravery" in the dictionary should be just one word: Tarawa. Imagine wading 500-700 yards ashore against a murderous enemy fire because your buddies on the beach were going to be wiped out otherwise. Without hesitation, that's what the Marines did at tiny Betio (land mass about one square mile, mostly taken up by the Japanese airfield) in the Tarawa atoll when the waves following the initial assault couldn't get past the coral reef protecting the island due to a tide that was much lower than expected. Col. Joseph Alexander (ret.), in his book "Utmost Savagery," has written an excellent account of this battle that lasted for only 76 hours yet will live for eternity because of the extraordinary sacrifices of ordinary men. The fight for Tarawa was so vicious that only 17 Japanese soldiers survived (out of a garrison of several thousand); they were captured only because they were badly wounded, otherwise, they too would probably have given their lives in defense of the island. This book did a great job of taking the reader right into the action as the Marines proved that an amphibious assault on a heavily defended enemy position was possible; from Tarawa on, the Marines would never lose a battle in the Pacific, thanks in large part to their tenacious beach assaults and the lessons learned on Tarawa. However, the outcome of this landing was in serious doubt after the first day; an attack by the Japanese on the men clinging to the beachhead that first night might have changed the course of the entire war in the Pacific. Yet that attack never materialized, and the Americans were able to push inland and take the battle to the island's defenders. This book will grab you from the beginning and won't let go; Col. Alexander does an excellent job putting the reader into the action, from start to finish, with this painstakingly researched account of a battle that will leave your jaw on the floor out of awe and respect for what those Marines were able to accomplish.
THE book on Tarawa.......2006-05-22
One of the best researched books I have ever read. Reads as a novel and as history. Alexander tells both sides of the battle of Betio and even found a Jap survivor to interview( only 17 were alive after the battle)
Excellent photos and maps. Alexander points out the high and lows of the battle along with failied opportunities and leaders. The quintesential book on island/beach invasions
Excellent and informational book.......2005-07-15
Well written and provides a lot detail on the training and planning that went into the invasion of Tarawa. The description of the fighting and deadly landing is very engaging and descriptive. The number of casualties suffered by the main landing forces was extremely high, and when historians write that only a certain percentage of casualties suffered based on the total of number personnel that landed, it does an injustice to the extreme hardships that the Marines and Navy personnel faced on the first two days of fighting.
The book also describes the lessons learned from the deadly landing. What is most interesting however, is the family backlash towards the President over the high loss of life. Even after the attack on Pearl Harbor there were those anti-war Americans who believed that the US should not be at war with Japan. Some of those anti-war protestors tried to use the high death toll from the landing as a reason not to continue fighting.
When one compares the past history with current events, it is very noteworthy that regardless of the circumstances, some people will always believe that the military is not necessary and that fighting against those who attack and wish to destroy us is never an option to these extreme peace activists.
Many gave their lives serving their countries on this remote island, this book honors thier memory.
Book Description
In 1945, a mysterious Nazi secret weapons project code-named The Bell left its underground bunker in lower Silesia, with its project documentation, and the 4-star SS general Hans Kammler. Taken aboard a massive six engine Junkers 390 ultra-long range aircraft, The Bell, Kammler, and all project records disappeared completely, along with the gigantic Junkers 390 carrying them. It has been speculated that it flew to Argentina. As a prelude to this disappearing act, the SS murdered most of the scientists and technicians involved with the project, a secret weapon that, according to one German Nobel prize-winning physicist, was given a classification of decisive for the war -- the highest security classification. Offered here is a range of exotic technologies the Nazis researched, and challenges to the conventional views of the end of World War Two, the Roswell incident, and the beginning of MAJIC-12, the government's alleged secret team of UFO investigators.

The Nazis are still here??!!.......2007-09-02
It starts with a rambling history of the Nazi experiments with levitation, atomic power, and zero point energy. I say rambling, because in contrast to the book that got me started on this subject was "The Hunt for Zero Point" by Nick Cook, which is a very grounded (no pun intended) and less fringy take on the subject. Very well written, too.
Now, back to the book by Farrell:
Okay, the Nazi scientists emigrated to the US to work on our space program. Okay, I buy that. He goes into a lot of speculation about stealth technology (again, see Cooks book for a better take) and the physics of levitation generated by Mercury spinning really really fast, which was mentioned in some ancient Sanskrit text... THEN, Farrell drops some hokey documents on our lap and says that the Nazis helped orchestrate the JFK assassination and, by the way, we may already have a base on the Moon and Mars.
Huh? You have to read it to follow the chain of information. It IS compelling, but it just makes the author sound like a maniac, who, in his acknowledgements, thanks his parents for letting him set up camp in their basement to write this book. Obviously a book meant for the subculture of people who are convinced the Chupacabra is the pet dog of the Grey aliens, and he got lost on his way to Bigfoot's house.
Yeah. He also acknowledges David Hatcher Childress, who... well, just do a search for the books he is attached to to see where HE is coming from. Fringe-o-philes...
Interesting pile of ideas in here to fuel some comic book writer somewhere. If taken for what it is, it reads like a weird espionage alternate history sci-fi. For that point along, I give it three stars.
good book.......2007-08-23
If you are interested in weird ideas about world war II, this book is definitely worth the read.
Very little in this book seems to be supported by hard evidence, and yet the information is useful.
This book is NOT just a list of usupported claims like many books about the weird side of the Nazis are.
Full course dinner plus dessert.......2007-07-13
This book is one big meal of a read. I read it a few years back and it remains one of my favorite in the field of alternative technologies and history. Not only is it well written (I enjoy Farrell's writing...see Giza Deathstar series) but it keeps the mind buzzing. If you have a feeling there is more to history than what you got in high school this is a great place to start an investigation. I would feel confident in offering an expanded review once I reread the title to refresh my memory so for now, trust me, this is a great book. Not for summer reading unless this is what you usually read. Not for the light hearted.
Amazing Connections.......2007-02-26
Where the author of this book has had to take some venturous assumptions on, he uses a lot of very well documented 'finds' to substantiate them - amazing finds that will astound those unfamiliar with how far really the Reich was able to go before the war's end in 1945.
The logical conclusions Joseph Farrell comes to, and the amazing substantiated technology that a secret few in the brotherhood were privy to gives you a wide open door for any UFO researcher, armchair or otherwise to be better equiped in debunking possible alien myths, and/or truths we are living in these very days.
Be spellbound, entertained and gripped by this amazing book. Where it has a ton on what was going on 'back then'(and therefore fills in a lot of blanks our history books left us), you will find it relates to everything going on today, right now, right before your very eyes!
Joseph Farrell shares his expertise in the science world giving the reader a huge leg up on how these events relate to modern science/phenomena; the findings in this work clearly interleaves well with other researchers who have written about the 'spiritual side' of our political world and their unique attachments to the 'other side'.
An excellent read and I heartily recommend it - some of it is 'open minded', and after you see what he is writing about, you can understand how it all fits! The rest is pure 'connect the fact-dots!' and you definately get the same picture...
Revelations of a global conspiracy - truth or untruth?.......2007-01-09
Joseph P. Farrell's The SS Brotherhood of the Bell continues the author's work - brought out in the so-called Giza trilogy and the "Reich of the Black Sun" - advocating that the general public has been deceived by its leaders for the better part of the 20th Century, and that the deception has been exacerbated in the new century. Mr. Farrell's contention is that there is an alternative doctrine of physics that - if studied and understood by experts and laymen - provides a general set of explanations for a variety of "mysteries" in our world such as UFOs. At the risk of grossly mis-stating the author's explanation, it seems to me that this "ether physics" is based broadly on the notion that our very environment is alive with energy rather than objects within the environment being the source of energy. The most notable result of this theory is that an object would be able to move through the environment by creating shifts in the ether. Call it whatever you wish, but this caused me to simplify the theory down to magnetic power...
Central to his premise is also the need to accept that - if ether physics are valid - then there has been a systematic and prolonged effort by those in power to hide this information from us. And, further accepting the credo that "knowledge is power" as the justification for such actions, one is directed by the author towards the conclusion that a worldwide entity larger than any single government is manipulating our lives.
Farrell contends that while ether physics is not a new theory. In fact, in his earlier books on the pyramids at Giza being sources of ether-physics-related power, this science is virtually antediluvian. It was, however, Nazi Germany and its links to the occult that caused resurgence in experimentation into ether physics in terms of its military potential. While discussing various technologies - as he did in his earlier book Reich of the Black Sun - the center-piece of this book is an alleged experiment that is more-or-less eponymous with the title of this book.
The bare details are this: the Germans were experimenting with high speed magnetic rotation of various elements. The results of these experiments are mysterious, deadly and, in some cases, contradictory, depending upon references. Core to this part of the story is published material from a Polish research named Igor Witkowski. He claims to have accessed documents that were held in the former German Democratic Republic but are now being accessed with the collapse of Communism. It is Witkowski's work - also cited heavily in Nick Cook's The Hunt for Zero Point - that is the basis for the bell-related information in Farrell's book.
All concerned conclude their stories with the scientific equipment and records being taken by SS Obergruppenfuehrer Hans Kammler, a real person who had virtual total control of the German secret programs in the 1944/1945 timeframe. But, with Witkowski and Cook are somewhat vague about what happened with the end of World War two, Farrell is adamant in his belief that Kammler and other former regime members were able to cut deals with all the allied powers and, in doing so, were able to establish themselves as an extra-national entity that operates to this day. This entity has been able to maintain itself by nefarious actions that, Farrell implies, may have included the assassination of John F. Kennedy!
As part of this startling allegation, Farrell continues on to presents his view that the entity that is controlling and manipulating the post-modern world is dominated by a "next-generation" Nazis who have taken over the older more established behind the scenes New World order groups such as the Illuminati, the Council and Foreign Relations and Skull and Bones. Thus, the author states that Bush, pere and fils, along with John Kerry are either willing accomplices or subjugated dupes.
What is true and what is not true in this book is a matter of personal choice. While one can say, "You cannot make this stuff up!" it is also clear that one could. In light of this, The SS Brotherhood of the Bell falls into the same literary/historical niche as such events as The Philadelphia Experiment and Roswell, where it is certain something happened but the details and the actual accuracy of those details is extremely unclear.
As I implied, it is up to each and every reader of this book to make his/her rational decision about whether or not to believe all or some of what is contained in this book.
Book Description
This highly acclaimed book offers a complete political history of East Central Europe from World War II to the present. Return to Diversity, now in its third edition, introduces a new co-author, Nancy M. Wingfield, and has been fully updated to cover events up through the 1990s. It includes an account and analysis of the developments in post-communist regimes throughout the region, addressing the transformation of each country during the first post-communist decade. It discusses coalition politics, ethnic discord, and issues of democratic development. This new edition features additional maps and extensively revised reading lists to reflect the most current scholarship in the field. Unsurpassed in scope, in depth of analysis, and in fairness and objectivity, Return to Diversity is an invaluable resource for students of this regions history and politics.

tangled history.......2007-02-23
The tangled and often bloody history of eastern Europe is updated to include events after the end of the Cold War. Rothschild writes of the conflicting influences that drove events. Like the myriad nationalisms (Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Serb, Croat...) that were often suppressed under the Warsaw Pact. During the Cold War, these could often be neglected by analysts. Yet later, some would erupt into open tension or outright conflict. The latter being the Yugoslav Wars.
The book's title alludes to this suppressed diversity of heritages and ethnicities. It also contains material about the Cold War that only became available after its end.
Still the best survey of communist Eastern Europe out there.......2001-06-14
Rothschild's _Return To Diversity_ really is an outstanding classic (easily withstanding the cliched abuse of that label!). I have yet to see a better one-volume treatment of the postwar political history of Eastern Europe. Not that Geoffrey Swain and Nigel Swain's book is bad, just that Rothschild is richer and treats each country in more detail.
Rothschild does not deal with the Baltics or other republics of the former Soviet Union. He treats Poland, Hungary, the former Czechoslovakia, the former Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania in their respective sections in each chapter.
His introductory background chapters, one on the interwar period and an even longer one on WW II are excellent summaries, considering Rothschild has already written the classic on _East Central Europe between the Two World Wars_.
I used _Return to Diversity_ both as a student ten years ago, and recently to teach a course on the politics of Eastern Europe; I was very happy to find it still being published. Going back through it, I was amazed how consistently Rothschild treats each country on the topics of leadership politics, economic development, social relationships vis-a-vis each regime, the extent of opposition and civil society, and foreign relations. He did it so well that I was able to construct a one-page "grille" of essential, quick and dirty information to help students compare countries (after having them concentrate on two countries each).
Not only is this book perfect to catch students up on communist history in the most efficient way, I personally find it invaluable to verify basic facts and details quickly. Country specialists will, of course, need to look elsewhere for details for which surveys simply don't have the space.
The updated chapter on post-communist politics (presumably where most of Dr. Wingfield's contribution comes in) is good as far as it goes, but frankly, you'll find more thorough treatments of post-communist Eastern Europe elsewhere in more space than this volume has available.
Overall, this book is well worth the money and easily merits five stars. The style of writing may put some laypeople and students off, but the fact is that Rothschild writes very eloquently as an "old school" historian, and if it sometimes seems dry, it's because of all the information he managed to cram into it. I repeat, this book is the best survey of communist Eastern Europe out there, and will no doubt remain so for some time to come.

This is the companion volume to the author's Statics. A complete and expert source of problems with solutions in Vector Mechanics for college and university students. This book provides the student with all the problem-solving drill ever needed, all in one book.
Customer Reviews:
Thank you, Shelly! I love this book........2007-05-20
This book is possibly the best dynamics books I've laid my hands on. I am an engineering student using this for a first-year Mechanics course, and this book is a lifesaver.
Each chapter starts with 'questions' like 'give a definition of moment of inertia' and then proceeds to actually explain the concepts as opposed to starting with lengthy derivations. The text is clear, aided by diagrams and the derivations that are provided are usually easy to follow.
But the real gem comes afterwards - the author starts with small, fairly simple problems in the beginning, and then each successive problem builds on the concepts learned from the earlier problems. In this way, one learns progressively, as opposed to having all the information presented at once. After six or seven questions, you will be solving more advanced questions. It is *essential* to work through the problems in order unless one already has a thorough knowledge of the topics covered in those problems. The worked solutions don't just give a method, they give explanations and the rationale behind solving it that particular way.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough - I went from dreading Dynamics to loving the challenge.
Be aware though that this book does not cover orbital dynamics.

Pray It Never Happens To You.......2002-09-23
Joseph Banks was a head of my LDS Stake in Cincinnati. Often he would tell this tale live from the pulpit. As a youth, I somewhat 'checked out' as this is not the type of tale I wanted to hear, but kept it lodged in the back of my mind.
I read this book at the beginning of July, 2002. At month's end, Joe was back in Cincinnati to tell his tale once more to the congregation. How amazing that, even after all this country has experienced in recent years, the people there were only half-tuned. One even had the courage to question its Truth.
Want to get the Royal Hell scared out of you?! Read this one. Be sure and pray that this Never occurs to you.
Touching & a Must for Those interested in WWII & Religion.......2002-09-09
A book I will never forget. I could never imagine experiencing the hell that this man went through. I am so grateful that we have men like this hero who protect us. In light of recent national catastrophe's, this book is not only topical, but a story that will stay with me forever
Captivating.......2002-01-30
We bought the unabridged audio version and put it in the tape player in the car on a long trip. My 13 year old daughter and 11 year old son were both "glued" to their seats. Every time we stopped, they were the first ones to make sure I started it again. A very gripping story that holds your attention from the very first page. The man had incredible faith. His life was spared numerous times. I definately recommend the book.
Talk about bad luck ..........2001-12-12
A two-time recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Joe Banks served on a B-17 bomber out of Foggia Italy in World War II. If he could complete fifty missions he got to home. But on the 49th mission his aircraft was shot down, with all his crewmates killed. Joe parachuted into Germany where he was taken prisoner of war. He had to make a 600 kilometer walk across frozen Germany before escaping to Allied lines. A truly inspirational story that tells the price paid for freedom. A book that everyone in the family will read, from teenagers to grandparents.
A Compelling Story.......2001-12-04
I found this book to be very compelling. It was hard to put down. The author describes the experiences Joe Banks went through as a downed WWII flight crew member. This story shows his courage and heroism and his strong faith. I could hardly believe someone could endure such experiences. It made me feel most of us are very blessed in the life we have. This book is not just for those who like "ware Stories". I would recommend this book to anyone.
Book Description
This is the story of the remarkable men of 1st Marine Raider Battalion, known by the name of its founding commander, the legendary jungle fighter Merritt A. "Red Mike" Edson. Edson's Raiders provided the vanguard of a U.S. Marine Corps experiment with special lightly-armed, mobile "commando" units in the Pacific. From 1942 to 1943, these highly trained volunteers fought seven critical battles in the Solomon Islands--with names like Tulagi, Tasimboko, the Matanikau River and the Dragon's Peninsula. They were desperate, bloody affairs fought against some of the most experienced jungle fighters in the Japanese empire. Twenty-four Raiders fought with such valor that they had ships named in their honor, all but one posthumously. Joseph Alexander provides an abundance of first-person accounts from Edson to such hard-nosed NCOs as Angus Goss, Walter Burak, and Anthony Palonis. His portrayal of the Raiders' defense of Guadalcanal's Henderson Field along an elevation known ever since as Edson's Ridge, shows why that three-day conflict became an indisputable touchstone of Marine Corps history.

For research.......2004-11-02
For research into a Marine Raider's service in WW II this book is a must have.
An enlightening and inspiring story! Great history too!.......2002-06-01
Col. Alexander's work bring to life one of the Corps less talked about, and somewhat enigmatic, yet truly heroic figures - Red "Mike" Edson. He was a visionary with the good sense to not let his vision be clouded. A focused officer and combat leader without whom the war in the Pacific might have turned out a little different.
This man deserves his place in our nation's memory with those of Patton, Bradley, Nimitz, Halsey and a thousand others.
Let's hope that Col. Alexander is busy on a book about General O.P. Smith, USMC now!
Excellent Book.......2001-05-02
This is an excellent work. Practically everything you ever wanted to know about Edson's vaunted Raider Battalion can be found here. The book is jammed packed with facinating anecdotes and the maps and illustrations are first rate.
The book does have flaws, though. Serious errors on the Japanese OB are littered throughout the text. For instance, the 4th Infantry didn't fight in the 2nd Matanikau, only the 124th. And Col. Alexander's narrative doesn't flow smoothly in places.
Minor quibbles aside, though, this a superb work--the most detailed book you'll find on the Raiders, even better than Peatross' Bless 'Em All. Get this book!!
A fine story of remarkable men and their remarkable leader........2001-04-03
Edson's Raiders, the 1st Marine Raider Battalion, engaged the Japanese in seven battles, five of them on Guadalcanal. This well researched and footnoted work by retired Marine Colonel Joseph Alexander tells the story of this remarkable group of men. Trained and conditioned by the founding commander, Merritt Edson, their baptism of fire was on Tulagi against the Japanese Special Naval Landing Forces, the rikusentai. This landing occurred simultaneous with the invasion of Guadalcanal twenty miles to the south. Completing the removal of enemy forces at Tulagi, Edson and his men were quickly moved to Guadalcanal. Glorious pages of their history were written there along Edson's Ridge, a three day-two night struggle, often hand-to-hand, against an enemy force under General Kawaguchi, which out numbered them by a factor of at least five on the second night. The enemy attacked remnants of the Raiders and the 1st Paratroops, a total of less than eight hundred men, without let up. Forced to fall back to a second line of defense, "...grossly outnumbered, back-to-back, nearly out of ammo...Edson could count less than three hundred men defending Hill 120." Their action in that engagement and subsequent battles along the Matanikau secured their place in the proud history of the Marines. The US Navy named twenty-four ships after raiders in recognition of their valor. The need for highly trained volunteers in special, lightly armed commando units were soon deemed unnecessary with the advent of the fast fleet carriers of the Essex-class along with new fast battleships. But not before the successes of the 1st Raider Battalion carved for themselves a monument in Military history. This is an excellent telling of their too brief story.
Great story of Edson's Marine Raiders in World War II.......2001-03-11
"Edson's Raiders" by retired Marine Colonel Joseph Alexander is such a fantastic tale of daring and courage, that if it had been submitted as fiction it would probably have been rejected as unbelievable. Alexander, who served two tours in Vietnam, is a Marine historian who has published numerous books on the Marines in the Pacific in World War II. In "Edson's Raiders" Alexander chronicles a truly amazing story of the feats of amazing men, told so well it can rival an adventure story, real or imagined.
This book is well researched and full of intricate details, much of it drawn from interviews by Alexander of surviving Edson's Raiders. Alexander provides some of the most minor, but important, details about the exploits of the Raiders while at the same time keeping the big picture in focus for the reader.
Pearl Harbor found the United States unprepared for war. The Marines in the Pacific, short of men and weapons, held on against the Japanese onslaught as best they could. It was during this time that the idea of a Marine commando unit -- a specially trained force that could land at night and disrupt the enemy -- began to form. The idea was bolstered by a forceful letter from Marine Captain James Roosevelt -- FDR's son -- to the Commandant of the Marine Corps. In February, l942, two experimental Raider battalions were authorized, with Colonel Merritt "Red Mike" Edson placed in command of the lst Marine Raider Battalion. Edson's appearance -- he was a small, unimpressive looking man who talked softly -- belied one of the greatest fighting leaders the Marines ever produced. He assembled his Raider battalion from hand-picked volunteers. Feelings in the Marines toward the Raiders were strong: love, envy, or loathing.
Imagine that you are chosen as a Raider. You land on a Japanese infested island -- at night. (Daytime amphibious landings are chaotic; nighttime landings obviously multiply the chaos.) You are isolated in unknown jungles. You and your comrades now must search for the Japanese and kill them -- before they kill you.
At Tulagi the Raiders killed all but 3 of the 350 man Japanese garrison. (Raider casualties: 38 killed; 55 wounded.)
On Guadalcanal the Raiders fought the legendary battle of Edson's Ridge where 833 Raiders and Marine parachutists were outnumbered 5 to 1. The Raiders were ordered to hold the Ridge -- later named Edson's Ridge -- at all costs, for if the Ridge fell, Henderson field fell, and if Henderson field fell, Guadalcanal fell. The battle lasted 2 days and nights, many times with bayonets and knives. At night the Raiders had to listen to the screams of their captured comrades being tortured by the Japanese. These tortured screams intensified the Raiders' hatred of the Japanese, which had already been at high pitch when they learned the Japanese had machine-gunned survivors in the water from sinking ships. Despite repeated Japanese attacks, the Raiders held. So stunning was this defeat that the Japanese commander was ordered to Japan to explain his failure.
During the darkness and torrential rains of the landing on New Georgia, two Higgins boatloads of Raiders became disoriented and did not make the landing. A Raider swam ashore and traveled through the jungle --"in swamps up to my armpits"-- to tell the commander of the plight of his comrades.
The lst Marine Raiders participated in 7 major battles spanning 13 months of violent combat. They fought the best of the Japanese combat forces, the rikusentai -- the Japanese Special Naval Landing Forces -- in all but one battle.
Many of Edson's Raiders belong in a Marine pantheon. Some examples: PFC Edward Ahrens, 140 pounds, who one daybreak was found at his outpost mortally wounded. Thirteen dead Japanese lay in and around his foxhole. Asked what happened, he said: "The bastards tried to come over me last night -- I guess they didn't know I was a Marine." Ahrens received the Navy Cross posthumously. There was Major Ken Bailey who was wounded on Tulagi. While recuperating in a hospital on New Caledonia he left without authorization and found his way to Guadalcanal to rejoin the Raiders on Edson's Ridge. Major Bailey's Medal of Honor citation reads in part: "Major Bailey, despite a severe head wound, repeatedly led his troops in fierce hand to hand combat for a period of ten hours. His great personal valor while exposed to constant and merciless enemy fire, and his indomitable fighting spirit inspired his troops to heights of heroic endeavor which enabled them to repulse the enemy and hold Henderson Field. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country." Turn to page 214 of this book and look at the photograph of Bailey and when you see this smiling, handsome, confident Marine who gave his life for his country and whose character seems to radiate from the photograph, tell me you are not moved. Colonel Edson also received the Medal of Honor. At least 20 other Raiders received the Navy Cross, the nation's second highest combat award, and 24 Raiders had ships named after them.
The lst Marine Raider Battalion ranks among the best combat unit the Marines ever fielded, if not the best of all time. Thank God these guys were on our side, and that Colonel Alexander put this great story on paper.
This is a well told, exciting story, painstakingly researched and firmly grounded on fact. This book will have wide appeal, but more specifically, those interested in history, adventure stories, or heroic tales should particularly enjoy this story. Alexander's clear and easy writing style coupled with his military background and his knowledge of the subject makes this an easy, exciting, and informative read. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Book Description
This book is an original study of the Royal Navy's response to the rise of the German navy under Hitler within the context of the ongoing debate about Anglo-German relations and the origins of the Second World War. Drawing on wide range of sources, the author casts new light on the diplomacy leading to the Anglo-German Naval Agreements of June 1935 and July 1937, and explores the crucial connections between naval intelligence, war planning and Admiralty policy. The author suggests that the Admiralty's response to the Nazi menace was far more rational and more complex than previous studies suggest.
Customer Reviews:
A superior book.......2007-06-12
Joe Maiolo really got the ball rolling with this book. Andrew Gordon's 1988 book on Rearmament and the Admiralty was a cry in the wilderness. Maiolo's very good book began a process of reevaluation of 1930s British defense policy that is still in motion. My only real criticism of the book is its less than stellar organization and prose style. Paragraphs are occasionally dull and sentences unclear. But this book is a treasure-trove of important information and interpretations.
