Book Description

The Surveyor Reference Manual is the most comprehensive reference and study guide available for surveyors preparing for the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam. New chapters on GPS, electronic distance measurement, geographic information systems, economics, job costing, and ethics have been added to this edition to meet the current NCEES survey exam specifications.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Nice Background Book.......2007-09-26

This book is resonably well written and is aligned with the NCEES models for Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) and Principles of Surveying (PS) exams. About 60% of book is math related starting with fractional multiplication and proceeding through state plane to Lat/Lon conversions. Other areas include limited introductions to Boundary Law and Business Practices. Outside of the math, I would not depend too heavily on this book for answers.

2 out of 5 stars Useful, but with drawbacks.......2007-05-29

I am married to a licensed land surveyor, and have been in surveying for five years. I purchased this book to prepare to take the LSIT exam. It is a useful review of the pertinent math and does touch on a pretty comprehensive scope of topics, but still leaves a lot to be desired. This is a new edition and is FRAUGHT with errata. I have to update from their errata website frequently. It would be bad enough if I was familiar with the concepts in the book, but as I am trying to learn new concepts for the exam it is very demoralizing to be working through a problem which has errors in it and I can't figure out why I can't make my answer match what they have. I've done the problem correctly, but they've got a bogus solution and without a solid understanding of the concept at hand, there's no way for me to know who's right and if I've got the concept or not.

Also bear in mind this is a textbook. And trying to learn from a textbook is virtually impossible without a teacher. My husband is my tutor and I am learning using this book and his knowledge together--you are not going to learn surveying concepts out of this book by yourself...it's just too superficial. They breeze through a concept, give an example and move on...there's no explanation or in-depth analysis of what you've just touched on. It is a fine tool for exam prep, but you better already know the concepts, or have a tutor available.

The biggest disappointment is all the errata. If they had done a better job of editing before it went to press it would be a far better and more useful book....unfortunately there aren't many to choose from, so you're kind of stuck with it for LSIT prep work.

4 out of 5 stars Land Surveyor Reference Manual.......2005-09-30

Good review material. Although the section on Astronimical Observations contains misleading and un-needed anti-catholic comments.

2 out of 5 stars Less than impressed..........2005-02-15

Like everybody else, I bought this not because I wanted it, but because it was the class text and thus, required. In that sense, it did its job (and the instructor's) in that it conveyed the information needed to pass the exams.

The downside:
--Numerous typo's, especially in the practice problems, leaving you to wonder why your answer doesn't jibe with the book's. Frustrating.

--SEVERAL leaps in logic: The book will (loosely) explain a concept. Then it will give an equation with no explanation as to how it was derived from the original concept. Sure, you can just memorize the equation, but without understanding WHY it works, it's awful hard to apply it to the real world. VERY frustrating.

--Many concepts are glossed over. Not too useful to those making a career of this.

I suppose this book is somewhat useful for a refresher course in geometry and basic surveying math, but it's no value.

Get it only if you have to. And get it used.

4 out of 5 stars Land Surveyor Reference Manual.......2003-10-11

This was the only book I used to study for the LSIT. I am not a surveyor by trade but a civil engineer. This book did a good job covering and explaining subjects that I had not been exposed to or hadn't worked with since college. Using this book to study with I passed the LSIT exam on the first try. Some of the exam questions seemed like they were taken directly out of the text of this book.

5 out of 5 stars For those willing to work.......2006-11-07

For those who have done the "Work" of finding out for themselves and extensively going the extra yard to realize what the truth actually may be. This 6 volume set is facinating, insightful and a first hand eval of the principals of the "Work". This is not an expose or a critcal analasys but a correspondence of ideas and values. Given the current state of disillusionment and the current "spin" and False Personality we are subject to by politicians and media these days this is a welcome read.

5 out of 5 stars Psychology of Inner Work.......2005-09-20

Consisting of nearly 2000 pages of psychological gems these lectures are well worth not only for reading but also for studying.

To combine expert psychological understanding with the ideas of Gurdjieff does give a new angle to both.

Dr. Nicoll's approach is practical and he draws help from suitable images to illustrate the points he is making.

I would say that even just one of the volumes well studied would give ample material for daily practice.

    1 out of 5 stars Hi.......2005-08-19

It's been said practice does not come from theory, but theory from practice.

I have from a good source what these big volumes really are - they are *private* notes taken from meetings of people learning a practical system by direct oral transmission. So, what's missing in reading these nice-looking books is the context they depend on: the individuals, their situations, and what they were learning at that time (re: a vast system contained in no book.) Since unfortnately no-one can bridge those three big gaps with pure theorizing, the lone reader may get quite confused by these lectures - almost as a faintly heard conversation one overhears and then tragically misinterprets. At least, don't be too sure! You can see the problem.

In summary, the Commentaries may have less value to readers than certain works like NEW MAN and LIVING TIME or for that matter Ouspensky's NEW MODEL and TERTIUM ORGANUM.

3 out of 5 stars Too many words.......2005-01-04

Probably Mr. Nicoll's love of the written and spoken word kept him from BEING the words. I get the impression that Nicoll, like Orage, were too much in love with talking, and that caused them to lose themselves in their words. Although there is some valuable knowledge in these books, Ouspensky's "In Search" and "The 4th Way" are probably the greatest introductions to this system.
These books can easily distract you from awakening by drowning you in words, so tread carefully.

    5 out of 5 stars a Work goldmine.......2001-06-03

Writers who expound the Work are not distinguished by the degree that they are original. They are distinguished by the degree of understanding they demonstrate for the ideas and practices and goals of the Work (universal ideas and practices and goals yet presented in a unique, practical language), and by their skill in communicating their understanding. Nicoll scores a solid 9 or 10 in both categories. For people who really catch-on to the Work Nicoll's Commentaries are really indispensable. It's true that most if not all that is in Nicoll's work can be found in Ouspensky's six main Work books (PSYCHOLOGY OF MAN'S POSSIBLE EVOLUTION, IN SEARCH OF THE MIRACULOUS, FOURTH WAY, CONSCIENCE, A FURTHER RECORD, RECORD OF MEETINGS), yet Nicoll has a different style of presenting it all that compliments Ouspensky's style. If you get to the point in your STUDY of the Work (which is as necessary as DOING the Work) where you have aquired an overall understanding of the language and the processes and goals and means to achieve the goals (a big accomplishment that Nicoll's Commentaries will help you to achieve), and then you move in to a more particular, in-depth study of individual topics then Nicoll's Commentaries will become a well-worn reference. His style of breaking down the language into topics and really going into each separate idea or practice, sometimes in multi-part essays (which would, by the way, be like finding gold if you were to stumble upon these essays in separate pamphlet form in out-of-the-way bookstores, and here they ALL are in this six-volume work...the goldmine itself available and ready to be easily taken for granted...), and his use of analogy and metaphor can really help you to achieve understanding of particular aspects of the Work that maybe you didn't connect with very deeply after meeting with it in one of Ouspensky's books. (I have to say, though, that Ouspensky's books are the purest spring for the ideas and practices and goals of the Work...) Boris Mouravieff's three-volume GNOSIS would be a good third source for these ideas.

This is an essential bibliography as a reference to introducing students for the Plant Pathology science.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent text.......2006-10-07

This is an excellent introduction to plant pathology and the kind of book one tends to hold onto to use as a reference after finishing their coursework. I have known plenty of graduate students who've held onto their copies, and I've really never heard any serious criticisms of this book. The coverage is broad, and it will serve as a useful, interesting and highly readable reference for those with interests in bacteriology, virology, mycology, botany and a variety of other fields that overlap with aspects of plant pathology. Typically when I rate textbooks I am fairly harsh because the cost is generally high while contents often leave much to be desired. In my opinion this book is an exception, and I think the cost reasonably reflects the value of the information contained.

5 out of 5 stars Gold standard for general phytopathology. .......2006-08-04

I have been out of Phytopathology since the fall of 1971. Over the years I have; from time to time; skimmed journals like Mycologia and Phytopathology. So the old urge came back and I bought this text on the recommendation of a friend.

This is an excellent text book on general plant pathology. The scope is extensive and I was delighted that a goodly portion of the book explores host pathogen interactions with a microbiological slant. My late, learned, and very noble professor, Dr. R. K. Hegde would have been thrilled to no end considering that the book generally follows his outlines of PL-PATH 600. Dr. Hegde Sir, whereever you are, remember that seminar in May 1968 on the basidiomycetous Fungi with Dr. C.S.Holton in the audience and your passioned pleas for more biochem data? Well those questions are explored to some extent in this book.

If you have any interest in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or plant science get this book. Most definitely a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Best textbook on Plant Pathology.......2005-10-09

This is by far the best reference on the subject of Plant Pathology. It will be useful not only to plant pathologists, but to other plant scientists and biologists as well. George has done an excellent job in bringing his now famous textbook up to date. I have many books on Plant Pathology; this is by far the best. The fifth edition includes many new pictures and drawings to illustrate the concepts relating to diseases of plants. Plus many new sections dealing with the state-of-art of this science. George says this will probably be the last edition he will write. What a way to cap such an illustrious career!

    5 out of 5 stars A Classic Textbook.......2005-10-03

Agrios has upgraded and improved his classic Plant Pathology textbook. I own the 4th edition, and I was uncertain at first if I should buy the 5th edition. It was defintely worth it. Not only is there considerable new information, there are also many more helpful pictures and diagrams. Plus, many of the old graphics that appeared in black and white in the 4th edition are in color in the 5th edition. I highly recommend it.

    Book Description

Heart Without Measure is a collection of excerpts from the journals of Ravi Ravindra, giving a glimpse of the extraordinary life and teaching of Madame Jeanne de Salzmann and the Gurdjieff work through the eyes of one of her pupils. Ravindra’s account of his meetings, letters and encounters with Madame de Salzmann is deeply intimate, yet it is not merely personal. His questions, doubts and insights are not unlike our own. In these recollections of a pupil, we hear Madame de Salzmann’s voice; the clarity of her perception and the force of her insight are evident throughout.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Deep Homage.......2006-08-31

Ravi Ravindra's Heart Without Measure, though a small book, is a powerfully felt homage to the great Madame de Salzmann, whose voice and presence, echoing through the text, resonates like a pure and holy bell, calling us all more perfectly to The Work. He describes well the experience of the student faced with the laser-like eye of the teacher who can read hearts and souls, an encounter not easily endured nor understood, and reveals the 'everyman' conflicts of his strivings in a restrained, almost selfless way. Most of all, this book is sprinkled generously with esoteric clues for those with eyes to see and ears to hear. This book indeed is the 'fruit' of the oral tradition that has always existed within the Gurdjieffian canon.

    5 out of 5 stars Woman #5.......2005-06-10

I found this book extremely refreshing but I can't help wondering if it is really only for those who do or have done similar practices [Taoist Alchemy, Prayer of the Heart, Gurdjieff's meditations and exercises for opening and harmonizing the 7 centers].

The entire book shows Madame DeSalzmann trying to raise the author from his back and forth states to a man no. 4 - that is someone who has in Gurdjieffean terms acheived balance amongst their body, heart and mind and is thus at square one and truly ready to begin and to try and crystallize something. Similar in intent to the Pentland/Patterson drama in 'Eating the I'

Like 'Eating the I' and 'Voices in the Dark' we are taken inside the inner door to a rather significant degree, but unlike 'Eating the I', this does not try and provide much context or background info. If you have not been in The Work or learned the preliminary relaxation and self-remembering practices, you will understandably be scratching your head through much of it.

However along with Bennett and Pentland the Madame seems to have made it to Man #5. And that is worth experiencing even through the medium of printed words.

I found that the book started 'meditating me' as few books do.

    2 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Introduction to a Fascinating Subject.......2003-04-20

Unfortunately, I could not disagree with my fellow reviewer more...

I was introduced to this text while a student in Dr. Malacinski's own molecular biology class at Indiana University. While I learned a great deal from the class itself, I found this book to be utterly disappointing in more ways than one. While he is undoubtedly a great teacher, Dr. Malacinski is a terrible author. His explanations of even the simplest concepts are confusing at best and downright confounding at their worst. Often, the book uses long, languid syntax to explain basic ideas, and in doing so, loses track of the fundamental basis of the concepts it is trying to elucidate. It seems to me as though Dr. Malacinski's purpose in writing an introductory textbook would be better served by offering his readers short, direct, and to-the-point explanations (such as those offered in the "Student Companion.") The trichromatic layout of all the book's diagrams make their interpretation difficult, and do little to provide the reader with relief from the bland nature of the prose. The text's lack of detailed color photographs is equally maddening - more than once when attempting to study one of the book's photographs, I felt as though I were staring at a "magic eye" collage rather than an electron micrograph. Additionally, Dr. Malacinski's attempts of to interject his personal opinions and imbibe his readers with enthusiasm for the subjects being treated feel trite and unnecessary. The text skims over many fundamental issues relevant to the study of molecular biology - most notably in its almost non-existent coverage of proteins and their role in molecular biology. I was equally disappointed in the book's total lack of coverage (or even introduction to) more advanced concepts in the field, particularly eukaryotic molecular biology. Although aptly titled "Essentials of Molecular Biology," students intending to pursue more advanced studies in the fields of biochemistry and molecular/cell biology will be poorly served by the book's complete omission of these advanced concepts. Altogether, while this book is one of the few molecular biology textbooks specifically designed for use in a one-semester undergraduate introductory course, many of the "more advanced" textbooks available provide a more comprehensive and easily understandable treatment of the material covered in this text. To those with a sincere interest in learning about both the concepts and breadth of molecular biology, I recommend "Molecular Biology of the Cell" (4th ed.) by Alberts et al, "Molecular Cell Biology" (4th ed.) by Lodish et al, and "Biochemistry" (5th ed.) by Berg and Stryer as alternatives to this book.

5 out of 5 stars It is to molecular biologists what DNA is to cell........1999-09-13

I read this book at the library and was highly impressed with the mode of explaination and representation. The book is highly informative giving the explaination with the best lucid way and the figures too are at the right places. How so ever the book would have been still more better if the method given at many places would have been clubbed with the major draw backs and precautionary steps.

All in one it is a very useful book to be obtained by the biologists working on the field

    Book Description

A new edition of the groundbreaking spiritual treasure, with a foreword by bestselling author Marianne Williamson .Since its original publication in 1949, In Search of the Miraculous has been hailed as the most valuable and reliable documentation of G. I. Gurdjieff's thoughts and universal view. This historic and influential work is considered by many to be a primer of mystical thought as expressed through the Work, a combination of Eastern philosophies that had for centuries been passed on orally from teacher to student. Gurdjieff's goal, to introduce the Work to the West, attracted many students, among them Ouspensky, an established mathematician, journalist, and, with the publication of In Search of the Miraculous, an eloquent and persuasive proselyte.Ouspensky describes Gurdjieff's teachings in fascinating and accessible detail, providing what has proven to be a stellar introduction to the universal view of both student and teacher. It goes without saying that In Search of the Miraculous has inspired great thinkers and writers of ensuing spiritual movements, including Marianne Williamson, the highly acclaimed author of A Return to Love and Illuminata. In a new and never-before-published foreword, Williamson shares the influence of Ouspensky's book and Gurdjieff's teachings on the New Thought movement and her own life, providing a contemporary look at an already timeless classic.

For those of us, who don't only like to search but also to find, this is the most important book on Earth!

    5 out of 5 stars A flowing journey.......2007-03-17

I have read this book twice. Once while in college, and then ten years later.
If you are searching for the meaning of your journey - this book will help serve as a guide. However, be ready to question your beliefs and habitual lifestyle. Also, be prepared to read a page, or perhaps a profound paragraph or two - and then feel compelled to set the book down as you experience a visceral shift in the way you think and live your existence. Even though this book emphasizes at various times the need for you to find a "teacher" as a guide to help with your evolution - it is my opinion that this serves as a metaphor for discovering the teacher within. This book is a slow read - and some parts may seem perplexing or confusing, especially the sacred laws of geometry and mathematics (i.e.: The law of seven) - but I recommend you continue with your reading effort; if you do so - you will be rewarded.
Since I am an environmental author and avid reader - I found this book helpful in connecting the dots relative to the lives and writings of some of the world's most profound teachers and scientists.

5 out of 5 stars An Awakening Experience.......2007-02-24

People interact with each other purely in a mechanical way. Most of them prefer this way of "life", going about their business totally asleep. But there are a few who want to wake up, who want to BE. It's not easy. It never is. But if you are one who wants to truly BE, then this book will help you on your first steps to the path; but only if you are willing to "see".

This book tells "how it is", not a bunch of spellbinding fairy tales with rituals and magic spells. This is a book for the true student of Way.

5 out of 5 stars In Search of the Miraculous; Fragments of an Unknown Teaching.......2007-01-24

Of all the attempts made by Gurdjieff's pupils to introduce his evolutionary system of ideas through writing, In Search of the Miraculous arguably stands formost. First published in 1949, the book continues to be a real help to the work. It may be surprising to some that Ouspensky received from Gurdjieff the material organized in this book over a period of only three years, from 1915 to 1918. After his relatively brief but apparently intensive initiation into various aspects of the teaching, Ouspensky separated himself from his teacher for personal reasons while other pupils remained with Gurdjieff to receive advanced instruction for many years until Gurdjieff's death in 1949.

People continue to seek out the Gurdjieff work today under the influence of Ouspensky's extraordinary book. It should be required reading for anyone interested in Gurdjieff. The serious student, by entering into the practical work, which extends the process of learning beyond the intellectual study of ideas, may eventually come to discover what the book's subtitle expresses. Evidently charged with the power to influence in the mind an unprecedented vision of reality, the ideas Ouspensky detailed must be seen as "fragments" of a teaching meant to inform not only the mind but also the feeling, the body and ultimately the whole of oneself.

While the truths Gurdjieff wished for people to receive cannot be assimilated through intellectual study alone, these true ideas, if heard, may strike the first note of an octave of real understanding, the further development of which will require, among other things, a long and patient self-examination conducted under special conditions. The careful study of this book can be increasingly rewarding to the student who has entered into conditions of group work under the guidance of people specially prepared within the lineage of those to whom Gurdjieff left the task of transmitting his teaching.

    4 out of 5 stars Fragments indeed.......2007-01-22

This book took very long to say very little. Many Gurdjieff students love it but I found it dissapointing. For every truth you get (self-remembering) you have to shake off a bunch of unnecessary rubish, (people existing to feed the moon to become a planet like earth). Take what u need and dont mistake all of it for truth just cuz some of it resonates.

    2 out of 5 stars Mediocre text.......2007-05-09

I had to use this book for a public speaking class and found it to be quite tiring to get through. Its few good ideas and suggestions are easily lost within its high-school approach and broad conjectures about communication.

    5 out of 5 stars Very nice.......2006-02-23

The book is very informative. It has cheatsheets printed on the back cover. There is also information to help you with your first speech because the author realized that speeches would be prepared before the student could finish reading the book.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-08-04

I'd considered buying this book from Amazon, and decided to first examine a copy at the Boston Public Library. I was unimpressed. The tone seems aimed at middle-school students, and the text is littered with patronizing "Dick & Jane" anecdotes. A quick glance through the table of contents suggests that Grice and Skinner address nearly every conceivable aspect of public speaking -- but a closer examination reveals a complete lack of depth. It seems as if they simply brainstormed ways to add pages without actually investigating their subject.

The most derelict example I found was the second chapter, devoted entirely to a discussion of ethics. This chapter includes a section on plagiarism, where Grice and Skinner define plagiarism and warn students that getting caught may result in failing a class or being expelled from school -- hardly the sort of information you'd expect from a college-level textbook. Meanwhile, Grice and Skinner lazily sidestep the most challenging issue -- the employment of speechwriters -- by confining its mention to a brief, rhetorical question among the chapter-end exercises. In other words: "Here's a complex issue. We've exhausted our space with rudimentary ones, but we encourage you to do some real work on your own!"

There are some informative, useful books on public speaking. Richard Dowis and James Humes have each written excellent books on crafting and delivering a speech. Virgil Anderson and Ann Utterback have written valuable books on training your voice, and Livingston Taylor and Keith Johnstone have written classics on stage performance. My suggestion is to skip this book. I was thoroughly disappointed with its lack of ambition, and I'd hate to be stuck with a professor who found it respectable.

A lot of computer-security textbooks approach the subject from a defensive point of view. "Do this, and probably you'll survive a particular kind of attack," they say. In refreshing contrast, Hacking Exposed, Second Edition talks about security from an offensive angle. A Jane's-like catalog of the weaponry that black-hat hackers use is laid out in full. Readers see what programs are out there, get a rundown on what the programs can do, and benefit from detailed explanations of concepts (such as wardialing and rootkits) that most system administrators kind of understand, but perhaps not in detail. The book also walks through how to use the more powerful and popular hacker software, including L0phtCrack. This new edition has been updated extensively, largely with the results of "honeypot" exercises (in which attacks on sacrificial machines are monitored) and Windows 2000 public security trials. There's a lot of new stuff on e-mail worms, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and attacks that involve routing protocols.

The result of all of this familiarity with bad-guy tools is a leg up on defending against them. Hacking Exposed wastes no time in explaining how to implement the countermeasures--where they exist--that will render known attacks ineffective. Taking on the major network operating systems and network devices one at a time, the authors tell you exactly what Unix configuration files to alter, what Windows NT Registry keys to change, and what settings to make in NetWare. They spare no criticism of products with which they aren't impressed, and don't hesitate to point out inherent, uncorrectable security weaknesses where they find them. This book is no mere rehashing of generally accepted security practices. It and its companion Web site are the best way for all of you network administrators to know thine enemies. --David Wall

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the beginner.......2007-08-01

While starting out in a new career, this book has been recommended to me time and time again. I have some background in security and penetration testing however this book takes you into a deeper understanding of how things work. I strongly recommend it for the beginner as well as the seasoned Information Security Professional.

5 out of 5 stars Good learning reference for those interested in learning........2007-07-30

This book offers an excellent overview of techniques, though some outdated, to exploit and secure systems. The book is easy to read with just enough technical jargon to teach you something. It covers most major exploits and the techniques used to secure your system against them. I have tested many of the exploits and tools and found them to work very well attacking and defending. If you are new to computer security this is a must-read. If you are an expert in the field this is a great reference.

The book is one of the best that i've read.
It speaks about hacking in a technical way and it's full of information

5 out of 5 stars An essential book for Linux admins.......2007-03-07

I read this book cover to cover and bookmarked half the pages with tips I want to use. It's not just a book on preventing hacks...it's full of great productivity tips as well. Nowadays, I rarely buy computer books because all the info is on the internet. But this book is an exception. The internet can't substitute for the education you'll get by walking through this one page at a time.

    5 out of 5 stars Information Security.......2006-10-10

I had to purchase this book for college but it is a great read. One of the only textbooks that I have used that was actually interesting. They give clear examples and make it easy to follow thier explanations. Great book if you want to learn about hacking and some of the issues it involves.

    Product Description

2007 Expanded edition. Includes a gallery of 17 paintings depicting different stages in the journey. The search for one s real self is a sacred quest, an archetypal journey, whereby the seeker eats through the web of illusory "I's" that mask his or her real self-identity. In our times, this search has rarely been reported in such a candid and compelling manner as it is in William Patrick Patterson s book Eating the "I". Dispirited and disappointed in life, the author s life dramatically changes when he is introduced to the esoteric teachings of the Fourth Way - the way of transformation in ordinary life. Unique to this rich and practical teaching is its insistence that the student's negativity and confusion are the sources of his awakening. Life's shocks and uncertainty - that which he is most trying to avoid - are in fact that which can help him to awaken. Writing on many levels, and in the strong vibrant voice of a natural storyteller, Patterson describes his twelve-year search that takes him from secret meetings in a Manhattan townhouse, to the Pyramid of the Sun in Mexico, to Dublin and the Aran Islands, to England s Lake District and a medieval Scottish chapel, to his boarding of Allan Watt's S.S Vallejo and discovery of the "Holy Fool". Into his life come many memorable and powerful people: Trungpa, a Tibetan Master of Crazy Wisdom; Vali, a beautiful and enticing witch; Casey, a Jungian painter; and Stanley, an arch-adversary. Yet by far the most remarkable and unforgettable of all remains the man chosen by Gurdjieff to lead the Fourth Way in America, Lord John Pentland. Eating the "I" shows how the pressures, conflicts and uncertainties of the technological world actively serve our awakening. Life is used to come to Life.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars A Very Personal Story.......2007-03-06

"Eating the I" is an interesting book. The author, William Patrick Patterson, writes a raw, sometimes joyful, sometimes disturbing, account of his personal search for meaning in life. The first half of the book is quite gripping, with Patterson introducing the reader to his mid-life-crisis state of "sleep", and how he sees that Gurdjieff's works may provide some answers to why he exists in such an unconscious "grey fog" all the time. He is told by a friend about Lord John Pentland, the man chosen by Gurdjieff to lead the Work in America, and makes an appointment to see him - leading to a very interesting encounter.

Patterson details his initial experiments with self-remembering and meditation and provides a reasonable description of a method. But he does not really explain the Fourth Way system in any great detail. Anybody looking for such should probably start with Ouspensky's "In Search of the Miraculous", Mouravieff's "Gnosis" series, or (for the really keen) Gurdjieff's own writings.

There are some very inspired moments in the book. His talk about the "General Law/Satan" I think was one of them, as well as a part where he discusses an "Initiation" of sorts where he moves from seeing the world in normal terms, to seeing the world in terms of synchronicity, archetypes and symbology. Certain things occur to him that have deeper meaning, like 'signposts', yet the people he discusses this with (such as his wife) are unable to comprehend the meaning that he sees in these things - they dismiss it as being an "overactive imagination" or suchlike. This change in perception - the literal "seeing the unseen" is not a quantitative thing, such as seeing thoughtforms, auras or spirits, but rather a qualitative understanding of the "deeper meaning" behind otherwise straightforward events - distilling extra information via a "sixth sense". He refers to it like moving into the "world of the psychic" at one point. Readers interested in such ideas would do well to check out Laura Knight-Jadczyk's "The Secret History of the World", a book that I think expands on these concepts quite considerably.

The latter half of the book focuses more on Patterson's family life and his efforts to reconcile his relationship with his emotionally absent father and his overbearing mother. His father's death seems to provide a catalyst for unravelling the emotional 'knots' that hinder him from seeing many aspects of himself, particularly concerning a student/'son' relationship with Lord Pentland. He also discusses the Jungian anima/animus (female/male) principle and some of his experiences relating to him trying to express the anima (female principle) within himself. This male/father/female/mother dynamic makes up a substantial part of later chapters, and provides an interesting complement to the sections more focused on Gurdjieff's material.

For me, the ending of the book was somewhat of a mystery. Patterson seems to take off on a huge tangent and becomes enamoured by the cryptic philosophy of Sunyata - an mystic of "no teaching" and "inner emptiness". He then leaves the G. Foundation, and book just sort of.... stops. I thought it was an odd note for an autobiography to end on, when it seemed there was clearly much more to be told judging from the year of publication of the first edition. Perhaps there is a follow-up volume intended? A web search yielded no clues at the time of writing this.

In any case, this is a book I would recommend that anyone interested in the "Work" read. Patterson seems to have a knack for presenting complex concepts in a more "digestable" way for the beginner, plus he creates an enjoyable page-turner of a story. Did I learn from it? Absolutely. It is an autobiography though, and thus is more about a man, than the knowledge that enabled him to become more truly "himself". Overall, my impressions are that this is a work that inspires more than it educates.

2 out of 5 stars A Perversion of the Work.......2006-07-24

If you can find a copy of the first edition, then you'll find an interesting book. The author gave that printing a fresh and authentic account of his time with Lord Pentland and his time of stumbling through the Work. Unfortunately, that edition was not well received in established Gurdjieff circles and the author was forced to do an extensive re-write. This current edition is 2nd rate, at best. You'll notice many glowing reviews and high ratings here, but that is because these were written by the author's students after having been given the task as a Work assignment. You'll be much better off sticking to the classic core books written by those who do not use the Work to earn a living. The author's later books are better reading, but this one is best left behind.

5 out of 5 stars Frank depiction of Work.......2004-05-09

I first read Eating the `I' over 10 years ago as I was very interested in learning more about Lord John Pentland, the man G.I. Gurdjieff had directed to spread the Fourth Way in America. Even with the publication of Exchanges Within, Eating The `I' remains a vibrant record of the remarkable Lord Pentland.

But I didn't quite know quite what to make of the author at the time. It was only in a subsequent reading, some years later, that I realized what had thrown me off-balance. Autobiographies generally carry a thread of commentary, explaining or justifying, whenever behavior might be considered unflattering (although I suspect more often the facts are simply `adjusted' to deliver a more agreeable accounting). Instead I was confronted with simple reporting, including thoughts and moods of the moment, with no "commentary". Could I have done this, simply reporting on my life to a wide audience? Even in a private journal entry, I either come out the "good guy" or the breast-beater crying "mea culpa". Now, I began to read with more care. Not only was Lord Pentland's dynamic teaching presented, but also this student's deep acceptance of, as well as rebellion against, this teaching.

As Mr. Patterson struggles with the ideas of the Fourth Way, as well as with "Patterson", he shares many of his hard-won insights. But it is the struggle itself that is the center of gravity of this book. As one truly opens to the way one's life is "lived", there is an inevitable collision with what one imagines about one's self.

If struggle is the center of gravity in this book, courage may well be the corresponding theme. Lord Pentland is portrayed as the courageous warrior bringing the Fourth Way to America; though Mr. Patterson does not speak of his own courage, it is only through courage that he can put this very personal account of his efforts, and failings, on public display.

    5 out of 5 stars Personal Search.......2004-04-18

A brilliant and `can't put down' book that shows an individual's efforts to come to something for themselves and how this can add up within the context of the Fourth Way. What does it take to be `in the Work'? We see the author against a background of family relationships, social situations, job relations and, embroidered in high relief, the archetypes that are present in everyone's life; particularly noteworthy is the `father-son' relation. He illuminates with clarity how the teaching Gurdjieff brought uses `life' to come to `higher life.'

In a wider context, William Patterson brings the Fourth Way teaching into modern times, and in particular, these modern times. We get a look and feeling of what it would be like to be on this fourth path of transformation. One also gets the sense that the Work does `stand above life.'

Given is the perspective of how a person wrestles with the questions necessary for oneself that can produce real individuality. Irresistible book for an initial introduction to the Fourth Way and invaluable for people already there.

5 out of 5 stars An Inward Journeyt.......2004-04-12

Eating the "I", by William Patrick Patterson.

This is a "core" book for anyone interested in the ideas of G. I. Gurdjieff and his work in the realm of personal growth and transformation.

A spiritual autobiography, it is unusual in the literature of the "work" for its personal approach and it offers a genuine picture of Mr. Patterson's struggles with his own personality, or "I"s, and his relationship with his teacher, as he gradually pieces together the real meaning of this spiritual path. The author was a student of Lord John Pentland, whom Gurdjieff chose to lead the teaching in the United States after his death in 1949.

For the student pursuing these ideas, it is also a useful portrayal of John Pentland, a quiet but forceful teacher who led groups in the U.S. for over three decades after the death of Gurdjieff. Mr. Patterson is a wonderful guide to the uninitiated and this frank account of his own growth is a consolation and support. Gurdjieff's view of the real "terror of the situation" is severe and his teaching is an unforgiving mirror to the student, for whom, according to Gurdjieff, the world appears upside down. One sees one's own bafflement and frustration reflected in the author's encounters with his teacher and we begin to understand the necessity of seeing and discounting our own egocentric worlds as we approach Gurdjieff's ideas.

Somber as it sounds, it is easy to read and the author's style is that of a good storyteller. We see his life develop, change directions, and begin to flower as the story flows from one episode to another. At first reading this book appears simple, but each time it is opened, more layers are revealed and more connections made between disparate ideas. I highly recommend this both to someone with a casual interest in G. I. Gurdjieff and to the more serious seeker.
