Since Robert's Rules of Order first was published in 1896, it's been the means to orderly, smooth, and fairly conducted meetings. This ninth edition of the famous manual of parliamentary procedure includes everything from the first edition, but all of the information is clarified, cross-referenced, and carefully indexed. "Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty," said General Henry M. Robert, and his gift of order is as indispensable now as it was a century ago.

Book Description

The only authorized parliamentary procedure guide, completely revised and updated by the authorized Robert's Rules Authorship Committee.

Originally published as a slim document in 1896, General Henry M. Robert's classic guide to smooth, orderly, and fairly conducted meetings has sold close to five million copies in nine editions. The only book containing the completely developed Robert's Rules of Order subject matter, this latest edition will continue the book's reputation as the gold standard of meeting procedure for parliamentarians and novice club presidents and members alike. Thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the past decade's technological advances and usage, this tenth edition contains new information on how to conduct meetings over the Internet, on phone and video conference calls, and with members in absentia. The best book from which to learn all about running and taking an effective part in meetings, General Robert's gift of order is as indispensable now as it was a century ago.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I needed it, and I bought it........2007-09-16

I had to have this, due to meetings that I was attending. I was glad that I could get it from Amazon, instead of drive to a book store two hours away. I live " in the country".

5 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive.......2007-09-13

I do very light parliamentary work mostly in committee meetings (say as Secretary/Treasurer), but wanted the most authoritative reference I could have for those occasional times when I really want to know fully how to handle a situation, like 'can anyone just call a question and stop discussion'? No, it takes 2/3 vote to shut off debate. Or, should the names of the people who make a motion and second be in the minutes or does the board vote as a whole and so any detail like that would take away from the vote as a whole? The book says the motioner's name should be in unless it's a minor matter and not the seconder's name. I've got Roberts Rules in Plain English which is pretty good too, but I suppose this is a case where I just wondered what more detail I was missing and, after decades of hearing about it, I just decided to go ahead and get it. And I'm glad I did.

(By the way, I like meetings to be quick, efficient and effective, as Im sure most people do. I find compared to just having a group sitting around chatting, that using a 'light' form of parliamentary procedure really brings each matter to a close more quickly and helps move my meetings along.)

5 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-08-23

Robert's is a must have if you are administrating meetings of an association. It provides the knowledge to run a sensible meeting with little conflict.

5 out of 5 stars It is THE authority, after all.......2007-07-16

What can you really say about RR? This is _the_ authority on parliamentary procedure, and the new revision is great. It has really brought RR up to the present, handling things like tele/videoconferences, e-mail, etc. It also does a nice job of clarifying some points, always by going back to the basic principles behind the rules. This is definitely an improvement over the 9th edition -- worth spending the money to upgreade.

5 out of 5 stars Robert's Rules have helped me .......2007-07-09

I bought Robert's Rules of Order because I live in a Homeowner's Association that is not run properly and we are in the process of holding elections to make some changes. I used to work as an Executive Secretary for New York State and I found that I have forgotten a lot of the protocol for holding meetings. A neighbor suggested that I purchase this book and I'm very glad that I did. It has brought back to mind much of what I remember as an Executive Secretary, and then some. It's been very helpful.

Book Description

Emphasizing the practical aspects of survey problems, ELEMENTARY SURVEY SAMPLING (WITH CD-ROM) is an ideal introduction to survey sampling. The textbook first covers the role of sample surveys in the modern world, then includes individual chapters that introduce a sample survey design or estimation procedure by describing the pertinent practical problem. You'll see the methodology proposed for solving the problem and the details of the estimation procedure, including a compact presentation of the formulas needed to complete the analysis, followed by a practical example worked out in complete detail. Chapter-ending exercises give you practice with the techniques and stretch your grasp of ideas.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars This book is a disaster.......2007-06-14

This text is in its sixth edition and contains all types of errors. The text doesn't bother to even give the slightest idea of how expressions are derived. Many of the formulas are incorrect. Some of the exercises are absurd. The solutions manual is no better. My recommendation is that you buy either Cochran text if you're mathematically inclined or Yamane's Elementary Sampling Theory for a more hands-on text. Don't waste your time or money on this text.

1 out of 5 stars I think this book is a waste of money. .......2007-02-11

I think this book is almost completely worthless. All it contains is 30 blank pages and 30 pages of definitions, most of which have nothing to do with statistics. For example, there are definitions of gain, union, voucher, strike, closing, journal, and firm.

Amazon's description of the book is also misleading. The statement that "Cram101 Textbook Outlines gives all of the outlines, highlights, notes, and practice-tests for your textbook." is completely wrong. You have to buy this material from their website.

I would have returned this book except it wasn't worth the shipping cost. Amazon wouldn't pay for the return since they sent me the book I ordered.

If you are taking survey stats save your money and ask your TA or professor to answer your questions.

I received my book quickly and in great condition. I had no problems buying this book from here. :)

5 out of 5 stars Richard III, the Perfect Villain, my hero.......2006-06-21

This is the greatest of Shakespeare's plays.

The hunchbacked and ruthless title villain is what all villains have ascribed to be and yet can never attain.

"Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this son of York."

With those famous words begineth the play and the introduction of the character who spake them: Richard III. In the great opening monologue, he reveals his plots and his bitterness toward the world that looked away from his ugliness in disgust.
He stabs at the world and looks to the crown as his ultimate prize.

This play contains my favorite Shakespearian quote: when Richard says:

"A Horse! A Horse!
My kingdom for a horse!"

Oh yes, the perfect villain. Caligula, Nero, Commodus, Ivan the Terrible, Saddam Hussein, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Vlad the Impaler...

5 out of 5 stars Richard the Evil Hearted.......2005-09-13

Shakepeare's Richard is evil and manipulative to such an extreme degree that even his physical deformity cannot match up to the inner deformity that is revealed to the reader/audience in his private soliloquies. Having been portrayed as a conniving usurper to power by Thomas More during the early Tudor era he is actually savaged by Shakespeare and his legacy in historical terms has become one with the characterization that the bard gave us.

Richard is a muderous liar who kills anyone who gets in his way and he is contrasted with the righteously portrayed young Henry VII who returns from France to set things right.

The play is a wonderful read and study in Machiavellian manuevering for powers sake.

From the setting up of his brother Clarence to the murder of the young Princes in the Tower Richard who takes the audience into his confidence gradually becomes as appalling a character as Shakespeare ever created.

Much of what is later revealed of the capacity for people to scheme against their fellows in Claudius and Iago in the respective tragedies of Hamlet and Othello is begun here in Richard III.

Book Description

Nanotechnology, science, and engineering spearhead the 21st century revolution that is leading to fundamental breakthroughs in the way materials, devices, and systems are understood, designed, made, and used. With contributions from a host of world-class experts and pioneers in the field, this handbook sets forth the fundamentals of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), studies their fabrication, and explores some of their most promising applications. It provides comprehensive information and references for nanoscale structures, devices, and systems, molecular technology and nanoelectromechanical theory, and promises to become a standard reference for the field.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Very Young Field.......2004-01-11

Is Nanotech just more hype? Blue sky research with no practical products in sight?

This book hopes to dispell that by presenting a solid survey of the field. It does require a fairly high technical level in the reader, concentrated in engineering. This may be a good sign. Things are not relegated to pure research. Indeed, several chapters discuss possible biotech and molecular electronics applications. Though you should be warned that these might be harder to build than expressed in the confident tone of some authors.

Some readers may see parallels to a description of the semiconductor industry circa 1955, when some devices had been built, but the full potential was only just being suspected. If so, perhaps all the more reason for you to go into nanotech, using this book as one of your guides.

Book Description

This anthology presents, for the first time, full texts of the twenty most important works of American legal thought since 1890. Drawing on a course the editors teach at Harvard Law School, the book traces the rise and evolution of a distinctly American form of legal reasoning. These are the articles that have made these authors--from Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., to Ronald Coase, from Ronald Dworkin to Catherine MacKinnon--among the most recognized names in American legal history.

These authors proposed answers to the classic question: "What does it mean to think like a lawyer--an American lawyer?" Their answers differed, but taken together they form a powerful brief for the existence of a distinct and powerful style of reasoning--and of rulership. The legal mind is as often critical as constructive, however, and these texts form a canon of critical thinking, a toolbox for resisting and unravelling the arguments of the best legal minds. Each article is preceded by a short introduction highlighting the article's main ideas and situating it in the context of its author's broader intellectual projects, the scholarly debates of his or her time, and the reception the article received.

Law students and their teachers will benefit from seeing these classic writings, in full, in the context of their original development. For lawyers, the collection will take them back to their best days in law school. All readers will be struck by the richness, the subtlety, and the sophistication with which so many of what have become the clichés of everyday legal argument were originally formulated.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars anti-edited.......2006-12-04

Nice to have all the texts together in one place, but errors have been injected throughout. A footnote to Ihering, "Geist des roemischen Rechts," becomes "romsichen Recht"; a quote from Ronald Dworkin, with the note from Robert Cover "emphasis in original," has the emphasis left out (it was the word "meaning"). In other words, the editors have taken texts almost entirely available on Westlaw and had them retyped with many errors. Wait for the second edition, or at least don't touch the hardcover.

Book Description

A deluxe leatherbound edition of one of the three D&D core rulebooks.

This new, beautifully bound version of the Monster Manual joins the special editions of the Player’s Handbook and the Dungeon Master’s Guide to complete the premiere set of Dungeons & Dragons core rulebooks. Like the others, the title gets premium treatment in the form of a leather binding, emboss and foil treatment, gilt-edged paper, and an attached ribbon bookmark.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Black leather is better than the image supplied.......2007-07-27

I was happily surprized that the book did not match the image suppled by Amazon and other web sites! So glad it matched the other 2 leather bound books. I hope more are produced by wizards in the future.

The leather book is similar to the previous 2 supplied by Amazon and by far Amazon has the best price.

4 out of 5 stars Special Edition Monster Manual is great.......2007-02-05

For fans of the latest incarnation of Dungeons & Dragons, the special editions of the core rulebooks have been great. While the content is fundamentally identical to the standard versions of the books, these deluxe "leatheresque" covers enhance the fantasy feel that goes with the game. The latest release, the Monster Manual, lives up to the quality standard set by the two previous releases. The only reason I didn't give this book a 5 instead of a 4 is that strictly speaking the much less expensive, standard version of the book is just as good as far as the game goes and the little "hope you like it/thanks for buying" note from WotC slipped inside isn't actually a bound-in page (same problem as two other books). If you're a casual player, especially if you don't run games as a DM, this version of the Monster Manual is a bit pricy. But if you're a die hard fan who collects all of the D&D products this book, and its predecessors, must be on your list. This is also a great book for anyone who appreciates quality book construction with an interesting layout and page after page of great fantasy art.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Collectors Item.......2007-01-17

If you are a fan of D&D like I am, this book is a wonderful addition to your collection of books. The pages are in vibrant colors and they have fixed some of the errors from the first printing of the Monster Manual. I've found the book is good to use in a game just like the normal ones. My only complaint is that when you first get it, alot of the pages are stuck together and have to be turned carefully to peel them apart or you can tear a page. Other than this, its a great product.

3 out of 5 stars For die hard fans.......2007-01-09

I had the standard monster manual and ordered the special edition one, since I already had DMG and PHB special edition. Since Im a big D&D fan, I loved this special edition. But the book is exactly like the standard edition, except for cover, page marker and most recent errata.

So, if you're buying this looking for new content, forget it. If you want the most recent print with errata corrections or just want to celebrate the 30 year old edition, go for it.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEAUTY OF IT ALL!.......2006-11-12

Well this is going to be a bit of a short review because, after all, it's the Monster Manual. We all know it, we all love it, and we've all used it for years. It's obviously one of the core books to D&D. Part of the Holy Trinity you might call it. Back in the early days of AD&D this trilogy was all you needed, and quite frankly, all we really had. Younger gamers are used to seeing Wizards of the Coast coming out with two or three new hardcover books each month. Such was not the case 25 plus years ago. It was a few years before we got a new hardcover and even then it was the crappy Fiend Folio. Heck, you've got it made today!

Anyway this is obviously the final book in WOC's Special Edition series of the core titles and it's another gorgeous book. Leather bound with gold gilt pages, it's the kind of tome that book lovers like myself go ga-ga over. The main worry is that it's just too nice to risk getting pizza, Dorito, and beer stains on. For me the book is a collectible pure and simple like the other two are. It's something to put on the book shelf and just admire. Yes there is some new material inside that formerly could be found only on the Wizards website and so if you are a completist then I suppose you'll want to use it. Or, you could make Wizards very happy by buying two copies, one to use and one to save. Whatever the case may be it makes a classic book even better. A truly gorgeous product!

4 out of 5 stars MatLab 7 for Engineers.......2007-09-25

Almost completely the same as MatLab6 for Engineers no need to buy the new book if you have the previous edition. But does a good job of covering the scope of MatLab.

4 out of 5 stars brief discourses on various maths methods.......2006-10-03

Palm demonstrates the simple versatility of Matlab. Many examples are given that are likely to be encountered by an undergrad engineering student. Matrix methods might be the most useful, given the prevalence of linear systems that you often have to solve.

Matlab can also be used for symbolic algebra. Here the usage may be a bit more specialised. While this can be neat to use, chances are that most engineers will rarely have to use this ability, relative to number crunching.

The book only briefly covers Matlab's probability and statistics functions. It covers the bell curve [normal distribution]. But doesn't really go into anything advanced. Still, remember the book is only meant as an introduction.

4 out of 5 stars Really good book!.......2006-02-18

The content is very effectively edited and presented. The material covers all one needs to know in order to solve various problems and exploit several powerful features of MATLAB. Very good introductory text.

3 out of 5 stars Had to buy it for Class.......2005-10-26

It's one of the text-book requirments I had for my computing class. It works, but... buy the used ones if possbile.

3 out of 5 stars Not very good for coding.......2005-10-20

Although this book has a lot of pertinent information to engineers, I bought it with the intent of learning the fundamentals of coding in MATLAB. I have a class in which our teacher assigns problems in MATLAB, but none of the students have experience in MATLAB. I bought the book to help me figure out how to write codes and it doesn't do that too well, but I could see how it might work well for someone familiar with MATLAB who needs to use it for an engineering problems.

Book Description

The Jedi move one step closer to saving the embattled galaxy— only to confront a formidable wall of resistance.

The harrowing search for Zonama Sekot is finally over for Luke Skywalker, Jacen Solo, and the others aboard the Jade Shadow. But joy turns to alarm when the living planet sends a defiant message: it refuses to follow them back to a galaxy full of war, exploitation, and misery.

While Luke works feverishly to persuade the elusive planet to reconsider, the Yuuzhan Vong launches a full-scale attack aimed at the heart of the new alliance. Sent to defend a major communications base, Han and Leia find themselves hopelessly outnumbered. Reinforcements are just too far away to help before everything is destroyed. So the courageous pair must now fight an unrelenting battle against staggering odds. Whether they actually survive is another matter. . . .

5 out of 5 stars Force Heretic III: Reunion (Star Wars: The New Jedi Order, Book 17) by .......2007-01-11

Good Book

3 out of 5 stars a slow spot in the series........2006-12-08

yes,its true.the 3rd book from a 19 book series crawling along like a wounded deer.leia spends her time doing a whole lot of nothing.lord nyax still isnt around.han battles it out with the vong over esfandia.the jedis search endlessly to find a fabled living planet.jaina gets pretty banged up.a really cool part is when she attempts to perform psycho-surgery on tahiri, whose 2 personalities are battling for dominance.the vong began killing thier own for failing.assassians are after the jedis.i almost thought vergere was back.thank cerronious she was srill dead.she was ultra-obnoxious.the living planet has uncharted force powers.nom anor becomes a cult leader in a religious fashion and the higher ups find out.about the cult, they dont know its nom yet.anyhow hes getting the shamed vongs to think the jedi are good.tahiri swears a life debt to jaina solo.thats about all i can say.this book would be half as long if they took out all the politics and drama.i was disappointed by it as the book is one of the final 3 and it just drags.the parts with tahiri are cool.she really starts to blossom in this one.no light saber duels, only 1 battle and a ,lot of hoopla!

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but gets a little bogged down in places.......2006-01-17

This book is a continuation of the three book Force Heretic series and the seventeenth book of the NJO series. This was a 300-page story made into a 390-page book. You could take at least ninety pages out and loose little in the story. However, I enjoyed the continuation of the three main threads in this part of the story. One is the discovery by Luke's party of Zanoma Sekot and the surprises the find there, including dissention by the locals, known as Ferroans. The second is Leia's mission to reconnect the galaxy, and finds the Yuuzhan Vong and Imperials at the same place, a vital communications nexus with the Unknown Regions. Third is Nom Anor's latest reincarnation in the story, this as the "prophet" of the cult of the Jeedi.

I most enjoyed the struggle faced by Tahiri with the personality imposed on her while she was held captive by the Yuuzhan Vong some time before. It had been surpressed, but she has been dealing with it in this book. I am not sure I am satisfied with the result, but even as I read the next book in the series, it is still an evolving issue in the storyline.

Of course, there is success along the way, but there are surprising discoveries made both by Luke and Leia. The open question is: how will these discoveries made both by the Galactic Alliance and the Yuuzhan Vong affect the fate of both in the galaxy.

Despite the way the book drags on in places, if you are a fan of the Star Wars universe, you should read this. Not reading this will put you behind the eight ball on following the next book in the epic saga, "The Final Prophesy."

2 out of 5 stars The Best Because It's Over.......2005-10-04

The only reason this has 2 stars is that it was such a relief that this trilogy was over that this book actually seemed decent (sometimes.)

I had a hard time deciphering excatly what the point of this trilogy was. I guess finding the planet, but by the time it happened, I didn't care anymore. I am a huge fan of SW and I always loved Luke Skywalker, but I just wanted to skim the pages that featured him, or Jacen for that matter. I am so tired of his back and forth (talk it out, take action, no wait talk it out.) I am ready for him to just do something already.

Three books to get to Zonama Sekot and you still have no idea what it's significance is. And who is the force heretic? I still don't know.

The only real worthwhile storyline was Tahiri. I have just started The Final Prophesy and had forgotten what it was like to get excited about reading these books again. Thankfully there is no Jacen yet.

Book Description

Model, analyze, and solve vibration problems, using modern computer tools.

Featuring clear explanations, worked examples, applications, and modern computer tools, William Palm's Mechanical Vibration provides a firm foundation in vibratory systems. You'll learn how to apply knowledge of mathematics and science to model and analyze systems ranging from a single degree of freedom to complex systems with two and more degrees of freedom.

Separate MATLAB sections at the end of most chapters show how to use the most recent features of this standard engineering tool, in the context of solving vibration problems. The text introduces Simulink where solutions may be difficult to program in MATLAB, such as modeling Coulomb friction effects and simulating systems that contain non-linearities. Ample problems throughout the text provide opportunities to practice identifying, formulating, and solving vibration problems.

Key Features
* Strong pedagogical approach, including chapter objectives and summaries
* Extensive worked examples illustrating applications
* Numerous realistic homework problems
* Up-to-date MATLAB coverage
* The first vibration textbook to cover Simulink
* Self-contained introduction to MATLAB in Appendix A
* Special section dealing with active vibration control in sports equipment
* Special sections devoted to obtaining parameter values from experimental data

4 out of 5 stars starts with simple cases.......2006-10-03

Palm takes the reader into a systematic exposition of the theory of mechanical vibrations. Showing how this can be understood in terms of the basic physics. He walks through progressively more intricate cases, starting with the simplest of systems with 1 degree of freedom.

The book is positioned as a text for an undergrad course, with numerous problem sets and chapter summaries. Also, he chooses Matlab in order to give numerical methods that can be applied to various problems.

By the way, Palm is also the author of a book on using Matlab, "Introduction to Matlab 7 for Engineers". You might want to also check that out, if you are considering using Matlab as your numerical engine.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Sick!.......2002-11-14

This is the type of book that you can use to make your character 400,000 times better than your friends! It goes indepth and allows you to make your character awesome! I strongly recomend this book for your group of nerds! Have Fun!

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not perfect.......2000-12-12

I like the critical hit tables, but sometimes it can get kind of annoying having to look up every 10 hits or so to figure out how much damage is done. It also has monster tactics in it which are good, but I really think this book is kind of underated.

2 out of 5 stars Almost, but not quite entirely useless.......2000-01-11

I've had this book since the week it came out and I've never used anything from it. I offered my players a chance to vote on using the critical hit system in here, and they were overwhelmingly against it. Their main complaint was that if they were using it against monsters, then monsters would be using it against them, and it was too easy to die on dumb luck.

Perhaps it does make combat more realistic, but when a single swing of a sword involves 6 dice rolls and takes about 10 minutes to consult all the right tables and figure out all the modifiers and effects, I think you're doing something wrong. But, hey, maybe some people like that.

The monster tactics section is more useful, and if a DM uses it properly, he allows his monsters to become more than a ball of hit points that the characters have to reduce.

3 out of 5 stars ...And it fell over the edge........2000-01-09

This book takes AD&D too far for it to handle the situation properly. Each of the rules is tweaked to such absurd degree that I at times lost all recognition of what exactly I was reading. Unlike Skills and Powers which expands on the previuosly available data, Combat and Tactics adds far too much of the new and the unexpected. The mix of the combat rules is almost intolerable if you know of a game that used these rules first. It is as if TSR is trying to capture the popularity of other games by mimicking them. On the other hand, Combat and Tactics contains many useful materials - the much-needed critical hits table which allows for detailed damage, updated weapons tables ( sadly, these are less extensive than those in the Arms and Equipment), and several interesting variants of the initiative rules are explained in greater completion than they are in PHB or the DMG. But by the time the book is finished you will feel that now the combat is too drawn out and it becomes so much more of a chore - nothing of the elegant simplicity of the original rules. My advice - give Combat and Tactics a try, borrow it from a friend, copy the tables into your little notes folder, and use your judgement during combat.
