The long-awaited, eagerly anticipated, arguably over-hyped Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has arrived, and the question on the minds of kids, adults, fans, and skeptics alike is, "Is it worth the hype?" The answer, luckily, is simple: yep. A magnificent spectacle more than worth the price of admission, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will blow you away. However, given that so much has gone into protecting the secrets of the book (including armored trucks and injunctions), don't expect any spoilers in this review. It's much more fun not knowing what's coming--and in the case of Rowling's delicious sixth book, you don't want to know. Just sit tight, despite the earth-shattering revelations that will have your head in your hands as you hope the words will rearrange themselves into a different story. But take one warning to heart: do not open Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince until you have first found a secluded spot, safe from curious eyes, where you can tuck in for a good long read. Because once you start, you won't stop until you reach the very last page.

A darker book than any in the series thus far with a level of sophistication belying its genre, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince moves the series into murkier waters and marks the arrival of Rowling onto the adult literary scene. While she has long been praised for her cleverness and wit, the strength of Book 6 lies in her subtle development of key characters, as well as her carefully nuanced depiction of a community at war. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, no one and nothing is safe, including preconceived notions of good and evil and of right and wrong. With each book in her increasingly remarkable series, fans have nervously watched J.K. Rowling raise the stakes; gone are the simple delights of butterbeer and enchanted candy, and days when the worst ailment could be cured by a bite of chocolate. A series that began as a colorful lark full of magic and discovery has become a dark and deadly war zone. But this should not come as a shock to loyal readers. Rowling readied fans with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by killing off popular characters and engaging the young students in battle. Still, there is an unexpected bleakness from the start of Book 6 that casts a mean shadow over Quidditch games, silly flirtations, and mountains of homework. Ready or not, the tremendous ending of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will leave stunned fans wondering what great and terrible events await in Book 7 if this sinister darkness is meant to light the way. --Daphne Durham

Why We Love Harry
Favorite Moments from the Series
There are plenty of reasons to love Rowling's wildly popular series--no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Our list features favorite moments, characters, and artifacts from the first five books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Enjoy.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
* Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him.
* When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists.
* Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards.
* Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
* The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius.
* Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother.
* The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
* Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'.
* Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children.
* The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
* Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them.
* Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it.
* Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge.
* Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

* Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming.
* Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone.
* Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager.
* Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape.
* Dumbledore's confession to Harry.

Magic, Mystery, and Mayhem: A Conversation with J.K. Rowling

"I am an extraordinarily lucky person, doing what I love best in the world. I'm sure that I will always be a writer. It was wonderful enough just to be published. The greatest reward is the enthusiasm of the readers." --J.K. Rowling

Did You Know?
The Little White Horse was J.K. Rowling's favorite book as a child. Jane Austen is Rowling's favorite author. Roddy Doyle is Rowling's favorite living writer.

A Few Words from Mary GrandPré

"When I illustrate a cover or a book, I draw upon what the author tells me; that's how I see my responsibility as an illustrator. J.K. Rowling is very descriptive in her writing--she gives an illustrator a lot to work with. Each story is packed full of rich visual descriptions of the atmosphere, the mood, the setting, and all the different creatures and people. She makes it easy for me. The images just develop as I sketch and retrace until it feels right and matches her vision." Check out more Harry Potter art from illustrator Mary GrandPré.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
By J.K. Rowling

This is a book that shows a mystery of why Harry is learning about Voldemort. Why do people keep dying? Why does Dumbledore have a black hand?
In the story Harry is called the Chosen One. He is called that because he is supposed to be the one who kills Voldemort. He also learning about Voldemort's past. Voldemort is a lot like Harry in a couple ways. Both of the parents died. There uncles are rude. They both went to Hogwarts.
Voldemort changed from handsome to well, ugly. He can talk Parselmouth like Harry. Voldemort's past is pretty bad. Voldemort lived in an orphanage. His mother died a few minutes after he was born.
I would recommend this book because it is a very good mystery. Will Harry die? Will Voldemort die? Is anybody going to die?

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!!.......2007-10-21

This book really helps to understand where does Lord V comes from and how is Harry and he related. Definetely a good reading for anyone who loves Harry Potter

5 out of 5 stars Best Harry Potter book of the series.......2007-10-19

Rowling really put her self in a tough situation after writing this book. She had to write a book 7 to upscale it. She did an admirable job, but her story wrote book 7 in itself. Book 6 was her best work, and really turned the story of Harry Potter around.

5 out of 5 stars YES I CRIED!!!.......2007-10-19

This book was soo good. They have all been great, but this one really got to me. Once you are this far in the series you feel like you know the characters, and I have to say this book touched me, had me laughing and crying. The events that unfold have you turning every page dying for more. I believe once you get past book 3 the story stops being just for kids. This book was an emotional rollar-coaster, and yes I cried!!! I know it sounds insane to get so into a book, but I must say when you get this immersed in a story it shows that the author knows what she is doing. Cheers to Rowling...she has earned a place up there with Tolkien in my opinion!

4 out of 5 stars Good long read........2007-10-17

Good story, but dreadfully too much book, not enough content. Rowling was right when she said it should have been edited down by a third. At least kids can say, "Look, see! I read all THAT!"

1 out of 5 stars Horrible title........2007-10-14

As others have noted this book's title is ridiculous and spoiled arguably the most shocking event in the harry potter series for me. At the very least stop grouping this in with the actual novels in search results.

1 out of 5 stars YOUR TITLE SPOILED THE BOOK FOR ME.......2007-09-25

I've managed to stay spoiler free for all these years, and while buying Book 6, Amazon recommends this damned book to me. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting look at the phenomenal Potter series.......2007-08-27

I admit that I rushed through Book 6 of the Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," basically taking in the plot as it was presented on the surface and without considering much of what I already knew about the way J.K.Rowling has worked in creating the series. "Who Killed Albus Dumbledore" was a real awakening for me to the clever, layered and nuanced ways in which this series has unfolded, and to the deceptive techniques of mis-direction Rowling uses to create suspense and to focus the ideas beneath the surface of what appear to be simple fantasy narratives. I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to prime themselves for a rewarding reading of Book 7, "...and the Deathly Hallows" (which I'll be reading soon after a careful RE-reading of HBP...).

1 out of 5 stars Harry Potter Spoiler right on the front cover!.......2007-08-13

How could someone who's such a harry potter fan that they write a book about it, want to spoil book 6 by giving the most major plot detail right in the book title?

Amazon should take this off their site.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, very interesting..........2007-08-10

I found the theories fun to read about before reading book seven. Being a light reader, I often missed subtle hints that Rowling dropped n her earlier books. Quite interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Unauthorized Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows News:Harrry Potter Seven and Half-Blood Prince Analyis.......2007-08-14

I enjoy the book. The way the author try to explain book seven might be written and also how explain what would happen to harry and ever oone elsein the book.

2 out of 5 stars Where are the predictions?.......2007-06-25

I was extremely disappointed in this book. Easily 80% of it is an analysis of book 6. I have book 6, I've read book 6. There are exactly 6 pages of predictions about book 7. Pales in comparison to Defogging the Future, which is nothing but predictions based on evidence from the other books. This book might be more correctly called Book 6.

4 out of 5 stars 7 Unauthorized Harry Potter Book Seven News: "Half Blood Prince" Analysis and Speculation .......2007-05-25

So far the book has been very good. I have yet gotten to the point of the speculation on book 7 and what it will entail.

5 out of 5 stars Move over Rowling.......2007-02-22

I picked up a copy of this book last week. After reading this unauthorized analysis, I don't believe I'm talking in hyperbole when I say that this author's writing is so perfect, so fundamentally soul-shattering, that it makes the Bard himself, William Shakespeare, look like an illiterate high school drop-out. This novel made me renvision the entire Harry Potter franchise and my overall direction in life. Sure, other reviewers say it doesn't take a lot of skill to copy and paste widespread Harry Potter rumors and put them all into printed text to make a few bucks, but this author does it so masterfully that it makes J.K. Rowling look like a complete dullard when it comes to writing about the world of Harry Potter.

3 out of 5 stars The most unbalanced book of the series.......2007-10-11

Now that Cornelius Fudge has been forced to resign from the Ministry of Magic it seems that the whole world is finally supporting Harry Potter. But nothing is farther from the truth: the dark forces surrounding the sinister Lord Voldemort are preparing themselves for the big fight and Harry Potter feels this very strongly. Harry never really trusted Draco, son of known Death Eater Lucius Malfoy who finally got captured and put in Azkaban Prison, but when Harry spots him at Borgin and Burkes he knows that Draco is up to no good. Harry is convinced that Draco is actually becoming a Death Eater like his father and will do everything to prove this. But his closest friends Hermione and Ron think that he is seeing ghosts. Even Professor Dumbledore does not buy the warnings that Harry is proclaiming. Again Harry feels that he has to fight this battle on his own.

Finally J.K. Rowling did it: she completely lost the balance between story and exposition. Whereas in the previous books she tended to overdo only slightly these side stories, in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince she completely goes beyond. Even the way she weaves the background stories into her narrative is becoming tedious. Again and again the Pensive is used to shed some more light on the main characters. The exclamation "Oh, not again!" truly must have been on the lips of many people that read this sixth episode of the Potters series. Even the extra character of Professor Horace Slughorn pales in comparison to the previous Defence Against the Dark Arts teachers and must succumb to the big monster of exposition. True. For most of the fans this background information is useful and interesting, but the author could also have put this in a separate Harry Potter companion or even an appendix. Many parts of the book suffer from this flagrant imbalance and more often than not I did feel compelled to skip chapters.

Amazingly enough, it turns out that Rowling did somehow realize that she was loosing the attention of the reader and decided to completely turn the rudder in the final chapters. Out of the blue the pace of the story is boosted and suddenly the book becomes quite a thriller. Maybe the final chapters of the Half-Blood Prince are to be listed as some of the best of the series so far. To say more than this would indeed ruin the experience. So my advice: gather (quite) some courage to get through the main part of the book and you will be awarded!

Book Description

Harry Potter's fans are down to waiting for the final volume in JK Rowling's epic mystery, and the fans at Wizarding World Press are no exception! We all want to know how it turns out, and if clues to the final solution have been sitting under all our noses in Book 6. Is Harry one of the people Rowling said would die? And if not—what else can happen to the boy wizard who's already lost his parents, his long-lost godfather, and his mentor? This is the Analysis of Book 6. It is basically the same as the first two guides but covering only Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The format is similar to the Analysis of Book 5. Many readers use these guides to help them try to guess how the series might end. They can use this one to refresh their memories of what has happened so far, as they reread Book 6. The guides look not only at the clues, but offer insights into both the motivations of the characters and the ways of the magical world, which functions differently than our own.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read for HP Fans..........2007-09-22

For those who are TRUE HP fans, this book is a great read. It's good to go through, even if you've already read "Deathly Hollows". There are still some unanswered questions and issues that this book covered, AND it has a lot of information here on all kinds of things - like the tarot imagery (hanged man, lightning-struck tower, etc.) in "Half-Blood Prince" and the other novels. Also, if you were a fan of the late great Madeleine L'Engle, you'll be floored by the ties between "Wrinkle in Time" and the Harry series these guys spotted. They even predicted that there would probably be somebody important kidnapped to force Harry's hand, just like in "Wrinkle", and of course there was.

Also, there were lots of fun finds, too. If, like me, you ever wondered how a kneazle might communicate... well, you need to read this book. They even spotted something that I completely missed. There's just tons of stuff! It gets kind of wild sometimes, but that's part of the fun.

I really like this guide series, it goes right along with the books and lets you think more about everything, it's almost like getting extra Harry books!

Unfortunately, this book got out just before "Deathly Hallows", which was a little bit of a disappointment, because I was really looking forward to having time to go through it all before "Hallows". But the research that went into it is just as amazing as the rest of their series. Like the previous guides, it has lots of definitions and backgrounds for words, plus other goodies that helped me appreciate Ms. Rowling's work even more.

The only suggestion I might make for any possible future editions is the addition of an alphabetical appendix, in order to find specific references in the analysis itself, to various characters, places, etc. There is so much in here, it's hard to sort through it all if you have a specific character or place you want to research.

3 out of 5 stars Bleh. Not spectacular........2007-09-07

I also have read all the other guides, and was really looking forward to this one. I don't know if it was Amazon, or the publisher, but the book came out a few weeks AFTER the 7th book. So there are tons of parts where I just skip over it. The details were starting to get very tedious. For example, they mention the part where Dumbledore is walking into the orphanage to see Tom Riddle for the first time. They note that the hallway has black and white tiles. Then they go off talking about chess, and pulling clues out of it. Now maybe because I already read the last book, I know that the orphanage just happened to have black and white tiles, and it is meaningless.
Like the previous reviewer said, they do not explain other parts enough. In fact, in one chapter, you are told that the answer to this particular clue is in the restricted section. No, actually, it is not. I have no idea what they are leading too, and there is no way to figure it out.
I just wish they would have spent less time picking apart every teeny, tiny thing, and concentrate on the bigger picture. It would have been so much better to read this book before the last book came out.

3 out of 5 stars a bit of a disappointment.......2007-08-18

Err. It's ok.
Typos abound & drive me crazy. Shouldn't true HP fans know how to spell "Ollivander"? Not to mention the countless other grammatical mistakes and "regular" English-language words misspelled.
I've read all their other guides, so was prepared for the casual, web-style grammar and word usage. But, after reading the other guides, I was still expecting some really thoughtful, deep insights into the book, and have so far been disappointed. Most of the time, they start leading the reader in a general direction and then leave us hanging, saying they want us to be able to "figure it out" for ourselves. But most of the time, that seems impossible. I have no idea what they're getting at & I've read & re-read all the HP books at least 10 times (Deathly Hallows three times). The authors touch on all sorts of theories, but just do a really poor job of expounding on them. I wish they would have chosen just a few interesting possible theories and gone all the way with them.
A big disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Harry stews a lot.......2007-03-18

Looks like this year Harry has mysteriously mastered stewing potions. This bothers Hermione who sets out to find an answer to his lucky find and has her own theory as to the true nature and name of "The Half-Blood Prince."

Harry also has a few emotions stewing that need a little taming; he seems to be a tad upset over Jenny snogging another student. Things get a tad dicey as it looks like you do not know who to trust as Harry and Dumbledore have a mission.

I think one of the best points in the book is where Dumbledore shows Harry that his fait in the conflict is not because it is written but what he chooses similar to the line from "Julius Creaser" by Shakespeare where Cassius says to Brutus "Men at some time are masters of their fates:
The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves..."

This story sometimes has the feel that it is going astray with descriptions; however all things tie together and it is necessary to distract you from the core story so you will forget some details only to be reminded of them later.

This is the sixth book in the proposed series of seven and as with the previous books in the series you will want to purchase the book and the Jim Dale recording. Also if you are collecting do not forget to get an adult version.

Before reading this book it is time to read "The Power of Myth" by Joseph Campbell. Or if you are more visual or auditory there is a film series and a CD version. After this you will swear that J.K. Rowling must have read this also before writing the book. You will see the mandatory stages a hero must go through including going through rights of passage such as caves before obtaining adulthood.

If we just stopped with this book it would make a great TV pilot as Harry go on with an endless quest. However we are promised that all things should wrap-up and many do in this book by the end of the next book.

      2 out of 5 stars Poor Casebook.......2007-07-30

zanandjayna's review sums up much about how I feel about this casebook.

Other complaints that I had is that the notes/comments sections are quite poor and are usually of little relevance to the case and/or concept you just studied. Also many of the cases have been poorly edited, leaving out key concepts that most prof's expect you to know.

All in all, this is a poor casebook. If you use it i recomend a good supplement.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Casebook.......2005-11-10

In comparison to the other casebooks I've been forced to read this year as a 1L, this casebook is probably the best written. Instead of just placing emphasis on the cases and the rules to glean from them, it also highlights key principles and strategies to use as a lawyer in the future(termed lawyering by the authors). I must admit that taking Nathan Crystal's contract class obviously helps in the understanding of the book, but it's a good regardless.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Seller.......2005-09-11

This seller is great, the book is in great condition and I paid half of what everyone else paid, not to mention the fact that the bookstore sold out and I was one of the only people in my class that had a book. Great seller, great conditioned book, fast shipping. Thanks!!!

5 out of 5 stars best casebook out there.......2003-12-22

This casebook was, by far, the best casebook I had as a 1L. It was well-organized, insightful, and clear. The author notes did much to clarify the complexities of contract law. As a student of Knapp's I'm probably a bit biased, but I did effectively learn my contracts.

      3 out of 5 stars Ugh..........2003-12-06

This book is extremely tedious. The authors use extensive language, commentary, and notes which further confuse and do not explain the already-difficult concepts presented in the cases.

Not for pleasure reading. This book is used in Contracts Law classes; if your professor is not one who likes explaining things to any great extent I highly suggest purchasing a supplement or two to help you understand on your own.
