Book Description

The no-holds-barred memoir from the beloved music superstar.

From the heart of one of the most beloved performers in music comes a candid memoir of professional triumph, private heartbreak, and personal victory-a coming-of-age account of a very private search for harmony and a very public rise to fame.

Coming Home to Myself is the result of that emotional journey-a song of personal discovery that taught Wynonna Judd to love not just what she does, but who she is. From a truly exceptional woman comes an unexpected memoir of survival, strength, hope, and forgiveness, filled with an exultant and empowering message certain to resonate with those who have dreamed of finding themselves, and who only needed the courage and inspiration to begin their own journey.

I haven been following most of Wynonna's carrer. I was VERY Thrilled to find out she wrote her book, on Coming Home To Myself! I bought it and know that it hasn't been a easy road to get where she is. There is many paralls to her life and mine. Many ways the path I chosen to have creative life and help others hsn't been easy--too many barriers but I'm a fighter like these JUDD women!

I like learning the lessons and challenges she has managed to overcome so far in her life. I can relate to her in many ways, because i know what it like to have a disabitity and diffuly realating to her mom sometimes. My mother is differnt than me in many ways and sometimes i forget now and then.

I also can relate to her from my Disabity Hearing promblem and cerbal plasy and i know people who have ADD. I find them intersting. She is one of many ladies I look up to for moviation and insperation throught tough times! I have created a character based on her.

I LOVE her vioce and songs that sings on life-- tough times and uplifing times. I am a Creative Spirit who like to do many creative projects and sometimes I don't know where to begin!!!! I can't wait to read her next book!!!! Kepp up the good work Wynonna You're # 1 in my book!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Coming Home to Myself (Wynonna Judd) Book on CD.......2007-02-07

I listened to this book that is on several CDs. I listened in my car and enjoyed it very much. (We envy so many people before we know what is actually going on in their lives... Wynonna has been through so much. I hope it will be smooth sailing for her from here on out. I sure would never want to trade places with her). I enjoyed this book on CD and I learned a LOT from it as well. However it does get a tad slow in places so be prepared.

4 out of 5 stars Came home to myself too!.......2007-02-01

We have alot in common when it comes to our mothers and it was an easy read, refreshing story. I've watched Wynonna grow up and always wondering "there's something not quite right there." When you learn about that her life was not all sunshine and roses growing up or after her fame it will make you love her and the voice even more! It made me look at my own relationship with my mother and realize I'm not the only one which felt pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars A gripping saga any Judd fan must have........2007-01-07

Any fan of country music is already familiar with the name of star Wynonna Judd, so her memoir of professional and private life holds a ready-made audience from the start. Such an audience will find COMING HOME TO MYSELF: A MEMOIR holds plenty of personal reflection as well as autobiographical history: Judd is committed to tracing the emotional journey which accompanied her rise to stardom, and here follows a stormy relationship with her performer mother, her decade of being a superstar, and her mother's dangerous illness. A gripping saga any Judd fan must have.

2 out of 5 stars I think you have to be a fan to finish reading this..........2007-01-02

I was given this book by someone who knows of the struggles I have had in my own life. Both of us thought this would be a great read for me. I know little about the Judds, their music or their lives. I appreciated the insight into how her career got started. I truly enjoyed those first chapters. At the halfway mark I was bored to tears. Shortly after, I could not find any reason to go on reading. I still don't know what she was so pained over. That being said, I hope whatever her struggles are, that they have passed. I saw her perform on TV at the end of 2006 and she and her song were beautiful. Buy the music, not the book.

Book Description

Mark Prater faced a silent killer in Hepatitis C, an insidious disease that slowly consumed his health until he fought back with all the weapons of modern medicine. The struggle to regain his vitality proved as harsh as the disease itself, and, in Mark's own words, seemed a burden nearly too heavy to bear. Mark's story focuses not just on his illness, but on his faith, which in the depths of his illness led him to discover a deeper relationship with God. Public and private prayers for Mark and his family came from tens of thousands of sympathetic fans across the Southeast (Mark is a popular local television personality). Mark's physical and spiritual fight against Hepatitis C taught him patience and, more importantly, faith in the face of overwhelming adversity.

Presently, Mark is free of the disease, his body leansed by a painful assortment of medicines and his soul healed by the cleansing power of prayer. Mark's story offers inspiration to other sufferers looking for a way out of the depression and fear that conspire together in any long-term illness.

5 out of 5 stars Silent Storm.......2005-07-25

Silent Storm is the perfect title for a book about Hepatitis C. Not only is Hepatitis C quickly spreading throughout the world, it is a disease we do not talk about openly. Two men who are not swayed by societal stigma are Mark Prater and Chris Carden. These authors openly tell the story of one family's journey through this devastating illness and describe the emotional side effects that are caused by its treatment. While this subject matter could have been too painful to read, the authors' focus on the blessings of family and friends, as well as, the family's ultimate faith in God make Silent Storm an informative and truly inspiring tale.

There is something about sharing a common experience with another person that somehow brings comfort, peace and the feeling that you are not alone. I read Silent Storm a month after my husband finished his treatment for Hepatitis C. Reading about the experiences of Mark and Carol Prater helped me begin my own healing process. Right now, my 13-year-old daughter is reading the book. My 15-year-old son will read it next. I thought that reading about how another family dealt with the situation would be helpful, especially the explanations about the changes in personality that occur during treatment. It was difficult for our teenagers to understand and accept the drastic differences in their father. Their heads understood that the changes in his personality were due to the medication, but their tender hearts could not help but to be hurt. Silent Storm may allow them to separate the side effects of the treatment from the man that continues to be their father.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has a family member, friend or co-worker with Hepatitis C. The story told will help readers understand that the negative side effects they see are not a reflection of the person they know and love. They are a reflection of a person struggling to be what they once were. Silent Storm shows us all that the struggle is worth fighting and that it is only through patience, love, and faith does one reach that goal.

5 out of 5 stars Silent Storm Finding Spiritual Shelter During Hepatitis C.......2005-04-11

Silent Storm takes you on a journey into the world of a Christian, who through no fault of his own, contracted and literally "fought" Hepatitis C. It expels myths about the disease and provides much needed facts. The language used makes it an easy read while it's fast pace and descriptive language holds your undivided attention. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. It helped me understand how widespread Hepatitis C is, as well as, how it can be prevented and treated. Since drug usage and sexual activity may begin at an early age, this book can be used at the elementary school level yet it is not so simple as to "turn off" the highly educated. It could be used in an English class, a health class, a Sunday School class or with a youth group. It has the makeup of a good film and would be very helpful in educating incarcerated offenders. As Mark Prater undergoes diagnosis, treatment and prognosis, as the reader I felt as if I was experiencing what he and his family were going through. As he experienced depression and struck out at his family, I knew in my heart that they were able to remain accepting and loving because they loved him with the agape love of God. It was heart wrenching when Mark was ready to give up only one month short of completing his treatment. This demonstrates the ghastly effects of this disease and the treatment. I found myself on an emotional roller coaster as I traveled through this journey with Mark Prater and his family. The end of the book contains questions and answers involving Mark's doctors, which are very "down to earth" and enlightening. This was a real eye opener for me. Because of the treatment involved it also helped me better understand the health issues of individuals undergoing chemotherapy for cancer. I will never think of a Hepatitis C or cancer patient the same again. Finally, once again through this book, I came to realize how blessed I am. I can't stop talking about this book and cannot give it enough accolades. In fact, I have bought several copies for gifts. This is a must read!!!

5 out of 5 stars A truly moving and inspiring story.......2005-02-21

This is an important book for anyone battling Hepatitis. Mark's story is fascinating. You truly feel the emotional and psychological turmoil that Mark, his wife, his children, family and friends felt. Mark's insights into the world of television news and the interplay between battling a chronic disease and remaining in the public eye are inspiring. His faith and devout spirituality along with his sheer willpower to overcome send an important message to anyone battling Hepatitis or any other chronic disease.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!!!!!!!!.......2005-02-19

Being able to watch and listen to Mark Prater on a daily basis thru TV and radio and getting to listen to a update from day one of the announcement of his disease to current, the book gives so much more detail of what his family, friends and co-workers went thru with him to aid in the healing of his body. This book will open your eyes and take you behind the man who we see with a bright smile and laugh to struggle with the treatments to overcome Hepatitis C. May God continue to Bless you Mark, Carol and family.

Book Description

"6/9: Evidently I wasn't supposed to put so much oil in the mower. The smoke went away fairly quickly, though. Connor even got to go for a ride in the fire truck."Alesia Holliday has survived scenes like this and more while her husband, a naval flight officer, has been away on military duty. They have forged a different kind of marriage-one that the 1.5 million current active-duty service members and their families will identify with. E-mail to the Front has a large built-in audience that boasts a camaraderie strengthened by shared difficulties and discoveries. E-mail to the Front consists of short commentaries by Alesia and an e-mail dialogue between her and her husband while he was on deployment. In text filled with empathy, gut-level honesty, humor, and unflinching support, chapters cover everything from "Departure: Only 183 Days to Go" to "Rebellion of the Appliances" to "It's Like Being a Single Mother, but I Can't Date." E-mail to the Front will appeal to everyone who appreciates the courage of those who choose to serve their country, the families who are meeting the challenge of military duty, and those who love and support them. Pulitzer Prize-winning humorist Dave Barry has written a cover quote for the book, and best-selling author Suzanne Brockmann said "This book should be required reading for all Americans."

4 out of 5 stars Honest and inspiring.......2007-07-29

I read this book as part of research into the type of challenges I might face before I married someone in the military. Unlike so many books that seem to claim that if you bake cookies everything will feel all better, Ms. Holliday bares her soul and shows us what a real military spouse goes through on a day to day basis.
Her emails and commentary are poignant and honest. My only criticism is that I feel she does fall a bit in the trap many military spouses fall into, that of trying to gloss things over and make them sound better than they actually are.
Nevertheless, I think this is a wonderful book, especially for those preparing for their spouse's first deployments.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-01-10

This book was wonderful. Very well written and hilarious! Even though deployments can be a hard time, I enjoyed that she composed this book with a light-hearted and humorous approach. I have loaned it to several of my friends and they too have delighted in her story. Excellent read, I would reccomend it to anybody, military or civilian.

5 out of 5 stars Ms Holliday speaks for those of us who can't...........2006-11-26

I am an AF Veteran but also military spouse for 21 years now. I have been trying to get this book for sometime and was finally able to get my hands on a copy. Of course, it arrived when I was 3 months into yet another deployment to Iraq and I debated on whether it was a good time to read it or not.

I chose to read it because the God's honest truth was I didn't think there was ever going to be a "good time" to read this.

The book does not disappoint. There were many stories I could sit back in my chair and smile and think "Thank God I am not the only one that did that". Some stories made me laugh and many others made me cry.

My daughter who is 18 saw the book sitting on the table and picked it up and asked if she could read it when I was done. She's grown up in this world and without having read a word of the book, commented that Military Wives were the strongest women she knew. That meant alot to me, knowing all the struggles her and I have had, which only seem to get worse when dad is off in some foreign land.

Us veteran wives know that what can go wrong will go wrong when there is a deployment. We try to prepare for every crisis, and we always think we're ready, but to be honest you can never be truly ready.

Thank you Ms Holliday for sharing your personal triumphs and crisis with us. And thank you for writing this book. This wife salutes you.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, what a book!.......2006-09-27

This book may be difficult to find - take the time! A fantastic read. Alesia Holliday has crafted a wonderful representation of the world many of us live in nowadays. She presents her story in an interesting format of email between herself and her husband (with narration at the beginning of each chapter to introduce the topic of that chapter). Illnesses, job changes, children, deployments, and much more. It really runs quite a course, and is highly recommended for anyone with a relative in the military, new (or experienced!) military spouse, or just someone who would like some insight into the everyday life of today's military family. Warning however! Be careful drinking hot liquids while reading this book! I have a sweatshirt that took many washings to get the stain out after laughing so hard that I completely lost control of my coffee mug. Alesia has managed to turn some very stressful moments on their ear by relating it through humor. What an extraordinary woman, and a must-have book. Keep them coming!

Without the third season of MTV's The Real World, set in San Francisco, Pedro Zamora would have lived and died quietly, a Cuban immigrant who became an AIDS educator after his HIV diagnosis at the age of 17. But in 1993, he and seven others were selected for the cast of The Real World, and Pedro's battle with AIDS, his irrepressible good nature, his love affair with Sean Sasser, and his growing friendship with his housemates would become public knowledge. When Pedro succumbed to complications of AIDS in November 1994, news of his death was carried on every major network and made international headlines. Thousands of letters arrived from around the world. Even President Clinton applauded Pedro's bravery in speaking out to young people about AIDS prevention and self-esteem. Judd Winick, a struggling cartoonist, had also been chosen for that season of The Real World, and became Pedro's roommate and close friend. His cartoon memoir tells the story of their friendship and serves as a vivid memorial to a bright-eyed and gifted man who made more of his 22 years of life than most of us could make of 80. --Regina Marler

Book Description

"You are eighteen years old. You get up in front of a thousand people--your classmates, your friends, basically the people who make up your entire existence--and announce, 'I'm HIV positive.'"Told entirely in sequential art, here is the story of the life-changing friendship between the author, a cartoonist from Long Island, and Pedro Zamora, an HIV-positive AIDS activist, which was filmed day by day on MTV's Real World San Francisco. As a speaker and educator, a guest on many talk shows (including Oprah), and when his tragic death received front-page coverage in the press, Pedro taught a generation that AIDS was not a punishment for moral defects or a mere killer that reduced humans to wraiths. Rather, he showed how those afflicted with the disease could live and love nobly with intelligence, humor and great humanity. Judd Winick's compelling memoir allows each of us to experience the vitally important message Pedro brought us.Inspiring, moving, informative, and instantly accessible, Pedro and Me could become one of the books that defines a generation.

i have been a fan of the real world show ever sense the first one but it
wasn't until the real world:san francisco show that i became a true fan.
when i first saw pedro i thought there is a interesting person, it wasn't
until i saw the show that i saw just how interesting he was. i heard of hiv/aids and i read about it but i never understood what it was until pedro came along. i use to believe what every one else believed that hiv/aids was catchable, that you could get it just by touching someone but
then pedro came along and taught me and the world that it's not true.
pedro became not just a person i saw on the tv but a friend, a brother,
i felt like he was apart of my family and i still do. i am so glad judd
wrote this book, now every one who didn't watch the real world san francisco show will know what a great and loving person pedro was. i wish
i got to meet him because there is so many things i want to say to him like thank you, thank you pedro for teaching me that i shouldn't be afraid
of the person who has hiv/aids i should be loving and kinder to the person
who has this disease because that person could be a friend of mine or one
of my brothers or sisters or it could be me.

5 out of 5 stars "Pedro and Me" is poignant and powerful........2007-03-19

Pedro and Me is a graphic novel that describes the friendship between two men who became friends while they were roommates on the MTV show The Real World. The author of Pedro and Me, Judd Winick, was a struggling cartoonist and was one of the roommates. Winick's friend and roommate, Pedro Zamora, was HIV positive and although only in his 20's, was a nationally known AIDS activist. Zamora died of AIDS within months after the taping of the show was completed.

In the summer of 1994, my husband and I had a college student, Susan, living with us. She was an intern working in the area, and we had offered our guest room to her for the summer. She became a part of our family; one of her favorite television shows was MTV's The Real World. Although my husband and I had not planned to watch the program, its compelling storyline of a young AIDS activist living with a group of strangers in downtown San Francisco drew us in, and we watched every episode. (Honestly, we felt a little silly watching a show designed for the "20-something" demographic.)

Having watched the television show, however, I was curious to see how Winick would bring his experiences to the graphic novel format. As a gifted artist and writer, Winick focuses briefly on what viewers saw "on-camera." Instead, he allows us to see beyond the show to the real friendship between the two men. His book, similar to Art Spiegelman's Maus I and Maus II, examines the human condition, and explores the subject of death with a sensitivity one finds in the best works of literature. When Zamora dies, readers grieve for the young man who had so much to offer the world. Readers grieve for Winick, too, who had the privilege of becoming Zamora's friend, only to lose him to AIDS within months of the beginning of that friendship.

Far from being "just a comic book," Pedro and Me is poignant and powerful and deserves to be on library and media center shelves across the country. Educating about AIDS without preaching, Winick has written and illustrated a masterful work of literature. Although some people have criticized Winick for being an "opportunist" and a "publicity hound," I see nothing of the sort. I believe Pedro and Me is a heartfelt tribute to a friend who changed Winick's life forever. This beautiful book touches the heart. I have recommended it to my husband and to my teenage sons; as a school library media specialist, I will recommend it to my young adult students.

5 out of 5 stars A truly touching portrait..........2006-10-16

Judd Winick's "Pedro and Me" does what the most highly regarded graphic novels do-it captures a particular moment in time and depicts the human condition like the best in literature and film do, much like art spiegelman's acclaimed "Maus," another highly regarded story told in sequential art.
Through Winick's telling of the friendship between he and Pedro Zamora, we are able to see beyond what was depicted on camera during the season of MTV's "The Real World" where they met and became friends. Winick focuses minimal time on showing what we saw during the show's run and includes depictions of some of the other housemates, but briefly. This is not a retelling of what happened during that "Real World" season--if you want that, then buy the DVD's. Instead, the building friendship and cameraderie between Winick and Zamora is what is offered here. The loss of Zamora is seen as all the more tragic when depicted by Winick, as you feel as though the two really had just gotten to know each other. As I remember, much of Zamora's onscreen time on that season of "The Real World" was spent on Pedro as a serious young man/AIDS educator, but here we get to see Pedro as a laughing, jovial sort full of cameraderie and quotable witticisms. The telling of his childhood as a Cuban immigrant and the loss of his mother are especially touching. Everyone should read this book. It is a beautiful work.

5 out of 5 stars a great book!.......2005-12-27

I barely remembered the show real world when pedro was on. I happened to find this book in a library when I was waiting for the bus. I read this book in one sitting. It is a beautiful story about Pedro. It also tells a lot about the real world experience. I do think that this book should be read by all teenage students for the way it was written. It is written in a cartoon style..........anyone could read it, it really has a lot of information about aids prevention with out getting all preachy. When I finished reading this book , I felt emotionally drained. I really wish I could have met Pedro.

I also wish that MTV would release the whole season on dvd.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully haunting.........2004-11-17

I have never seen 'The Real World', nor had I heard of Pedro. I merely picked this book up on a whim, and discovered an amazing tale of friendship, both beautifully drawn and exceptionally realised. Brief, but hard to forget.

Winick's life has obviously changed after meeting Pedro, and I am suprised so many reviewers feel that he is capitalising on Pedro's death. Rather, Winick strikes me as having a great amount of love and admiration for his former friend, all the while using the comic medium to become a voice for Pedro's cause. Essentially the work is looking to promote AIDS awareness and direct a future that is increasingly knowledgable and embracing of non-normative sexualities.

The art is quite lovely; somewhat like Craig Thompson's 'Blankets', although the comic couldn't be more different. I thought the layouts were quite innovative and the whole piece was quite an achievement and obviously completely heartfelt, which is so uncommon in the comic genre.

However, I did feel that the time in the house was skipped over quite briefly to focus on his death. While the exploration of his demise was important, I think it is also essential to portray more of his household interactions, considering they were the basis for the friendship.

Additionally, the comic's cover is a real led-down point for Winick. It is poorly designed, old-fashioned and quite unappealing. It does not really exhibit the true wonder of this comic, which is a shame, because it is quite masterful.

Irrespective of this, I could not recommend this work enough. It is beautiful and deep, aching and gentle. I really admired it.

2 out of 5 stars Eyes more on self and less on God.......2006-01-14

In The Transparent Life, Naomi Judd combines devotion-style writing, questions, personal notes, and Scripture to express a mind, body and spiritual connection. Knowing many do not understand why their life is going in the direction that it is, she provides her insight and understanding to the hurting.

Naomi has fully recovered from hepatitis C and credits her recovery, alongside her caring medical doctors, to making smarter life choices and greater peace of mind. As she was delving into understanding the being as a whole with emotions, lifestyle needs, and spiritual needs, she writes, "I learned how our lifestyles can cause all sorts of mental distress and disease...I was shocked to discover that 85 percent of all illnesses are related to stress." She also writes that "The World Health Organization has proclaimed stress to be the number one global epidemic."

If you are struggling with a health or other issue, this book may help you gain some understanding of what you can do to alleviate some of the stress and gain peace of mind. Although the book contains Scripture and clearly Naomi is a Christian, I thought a more effective connection would have been made between self and God. In a chapter titled "Quiet Rest Time with God," she spoke of meditation, creating a sense of self-mastery and listening to your inner witness, but passed over how God or the Holy Spirit may work in that quiet time. The strength of this book lies in her personal experiences and the questions she poses, but the greater weakness may be in leaving you with your eyes more on yourself and less on God. - Sheri Carlstrom, Christian Book Previews.com

4 out of 5 stars Very detailed book about Ashley.......2003-02-26

Gosh, about half way through the book I began to really bond with this woman as a character and totally look at her mother and sister in a new way. Lovely, beautiful woman with sensitive, brilliant heart.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of James L. Dickerson.......2002-11-04

From the moment I began to read the story of Ashley Judd -
"Crying on the Inside", I knew that James L. Dickerson had risen the ladder of greatness in the world of publishing.

Like many of Ashley's fans, I knew of her famous family ties with her mother Naomi and her sister Wynonna, as the award winning country duo "The Judds".

Ashley's story of isolation and abandonment, in both her personal and professional life, is revealed in stark reality to a public relations, glossy magazine article.

James has most effectively written about the struggle and iron-clad determination that Ashley has imbedded in her soul and psyche. She is a true perfectionist, down to the last detail.

This is not simply a story being told for print. Page by page it peels through the layers of an outstanding actress and individual, to reveal the pearl within the hard shell. Priceless and demanded!

James, I'm honoured that you asked me to review this for you. I can't wait for the next one:) Thank you! Diana

5 out of 5 stars Ashley the Great.......2002-09-20

When you see a book written by James Dickerson, you'd better roll up your sleeves . The veteran reporter/author leaves no stone unturned when he takes on a subject and he's picked a great one to follow his book about Natalie Portman.

Here he checks out Ashley Judd from all angles and perspectives and does so in a fair, thorough and neat manner. It's also a flowing, enjoyable read thanks to his writing skills as he manages to weave Ashley's biography, her life and times, in and around her famous mother and sister -- Wynonna and Naomi Judd.

Dickerson likes battlers and he's got one here. Despite the success of her mom and sister, Ashley's life has not been an easy one by any means and we're swept into the passions and obstacles that helped give us this remarkable actress. We're left with the impression that Ashley Judd is just now starting to come into her own. Even though she's well-established as an actress her best work my be yet to come.

Photos enhance this book which is beautifully packaged and the cover draws you into her life. Her fans, new and old, will not want to miss this one and neither will the fans of the Judds.

Book Description

A history of the sensational New York City love triangle murder case that held the attention of the nation in 1927.

Few incidents in crime history have been as notorious—yet mundane—as the 1927 murder of Queens suburbanite Albert Snyder by his wife and her lover. Resonant of the footloose Jazz Age, it made persistent headlines and led to a sensational trial, spawning a 1920s Broadway play and the classic noir film of the 1940s: Double Indemnity. This book assesses the entire case, from grisly slaying and shabby cover-up to sharp police work and aftermath. Moreover, it explores sociocultural questions that beg to be answered: what effect does news reportage exert upon high profile cases, and why did such a transparent crime earn such an enduring place in the popular psyche?

5 out of 5 stars The Best Ruth Snyder Book Yet!.......2007-01-17

Landis Mackellar is to be commended for writing the most readable, and inclusive, account of the 1927 "Double Indemnity" murders yet published. The book is scholarly, but not dry, and I read it all in one sitting. True, the major points have been covered many times before, but Mr. Mackellar provides enough new supporting detail, drawn from the trial transcripts, other archival sources, and the newspapers, that I, who have read everything published on the Snyder case that I have been able to get my hands on, did not think to myself, "oh great, another rehash" and put it aside for later reading. He is also to be commended for NOT using recreated dialogue, an authors' conceit that usually causes me to view a book with distrust if it purports itself to be a "true account." My only complaint, and it is a minor one, is that given the wealth of photos available of every aspect of the case, the book seems under illustrated. But, I'll gladly do without a photo section if a book on a topic with which I am well versed keeps me interested and does not irritate me with recreated dialgue or speculative 'insights' into the minds of people long dead whom the author never met. Good work, Mr. Mackellar!

4 out of 5 stars The 'Double Indemnity Murder'.......2007-01-03

Landis MacKellar's new book, The Double Indemnity Murder, explores one of the most sensational murders of the 20th century. When Albert Snyder was killed in his bed by his wife Ruth and her lover, Judd Gray, some eighty years ago in March of 1927, Queens Village, New York City, and much of the United States was captivated by the aftermath of this notorious crime. The slaying became a symbol of the jazz/flapper era and resulted in a Broadway pla and a 1940's noir movie, and has gone down in the annals of crime literature.

Ironically, the murder involved little intrigue. Due to excellent police work and an ineffective cover-up from the co-conspirators, Ruth Snyder and Judd Gray were brought to justice with swiftness unheard of in the 21st century.

MacKellar's research for this book was exceptionally thorough. Broken up into three parts - the crime, trial, and last days, with three appendices, the book provides a psychological profile for both killers and the victim, as well as their unfortunate cast of on-lookers. Because the crime was so transparent, Double Indemnity doesn't quite read like a mystery. However, MacKellar's profiling is enough to allow each reader the background to make their own assessment as to the motivation behind this legendary crime.

1 out of 5 stars A Rerun.......2006-11-14

Double Indemnity Murder: Ruth Snyder, Judd Gray and New York's Crime of the Century is just a rehash of other written books on the subject. It offers no new information about this famous murder case. The author just offers the reader the same information using trial transcripts, newspaper arrticles etc that other writers have used.
For a unique and more realistic version on this real life murder I would recommend Karl Schweizer's Seeds of Evil: The Gray/Snyder Murder Case. Dr. Schweizer incorporates the trial transcripts and newspaper articles as well as reconstructing conversations thus offering a motive to the murder; namely, having to do with the spiritual condition of the murderers. Schweizer's story draws the reader into the inner thoughts of Ruth and Judd and takes the reader through the downward spiral of their actions. His book is much more interesting and engaging than Mackellar's.

Book Description

Country music has exploded across the U.S. and undergone a sweeping revolution, transforming the once ridiculed world of Nashville into an unlikely focal point of American pop culture. Bruce Feiler was granted unprecedented access to the private moments of the revolution. Here is the acclaimed report: a chronicle of the genre's biggest stars as they change the face of American music.

From the historic stage of the Grand Ole Opry to the dim light of a recording studio, here is a ruggedly authentic behind the scenes tour that takes you places outsiders have never been allowed to go. Part social history, part backstage pass, this penetrating and graceful book presents the most comprehensive portraits yet painted of Garth Brooks and Wynonna Judd-two of the most celebrated artists of our times-as well as a touching picture of Wade Hayes, a young man who hopes to follow them to the exalted heights of one of America's richest traditions: the world of country music.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars +1/2 stars -- Fascinating portrait of country music business.......2003-01-08

Feiler's book is ostensibly a portrait of three modern country artists, Garth Brooks, Wynonna Judd and Wade Hayes. And though he provides interesting portraiture of all three, what he really documents - using the three artists as vehicles - is the changing business of the country music industry, and by association, the broader changes wrought by and to American media and culture. It's a well-written volume, with some illuminating conclusions, fleshed out by first-hand observations the author made in and around Nashville.

Much has been made of Feiler's veracity, but, to a large degree, his larger theses are independent of the specifics. Brooks and Judd have each taken their digs at Feiler (the latter being more surprising, since Feiler's portrait of Judd is, ultimately, quite flattering), so one might take his biography of their lives with a grain of salt. Even so, his conclusions about Nashville's changing face, both musically and operationally, are usually spot-on.

The Cliff's Notes rendition of Feiler's work focuses on his portraiture of the three principals: Garth Brooks as an obsessive careerist who only finds joy during his time on stage, Wynonna Judd as the screwed-up (but ultimately triumphant) result of a screwed-up childhood brought upon her by the most heinous of mothers, and Wade Hayes as the naïf, making his way through a hurricane of market forces. By threading these three stories with history of Nashville's business, the reader sees how the threads of art and commerce have intertwined over the years, with commerce realizing a substantial choke-hold on artistry in the '90s.

Of particular interest is Feiler's description of the symbiosis between artists, labels and radio. The manipulations of hit single charts, the conniving for chart position (and the lurid world of not-exactly-payola that fuels it), the trading of accurate charts for those that can be "influenced" is eye-opening for those outside the industry. Feiler's discussion about various trends in country music, the rise of women signaled, in part, by the Judd's supremacy, the displacement of Wynonna by the sex-appeal of Shania, and the replacement of earlier artists by a new wave, are all very compelling.

The book is weighted towards reporting on Garth Brooks, which isn't necessarily a negative, since his is the most complex portrait, and Feiler finds his greatest insights in Brooks' rise and plateau. On the negative side, parts of this book were previously published as magazine articles, and there is some unnecessary repetition. The careful reader will wonder whether Feiler's editor actually read the entire book through.

Feiler is a fine writer, and has provided a unique portrait of Nashville through the peak of its '90s supremacy. Whether or not you believe the details he reports on his principal subjects, there's a deep ring of truth in his analyses.

1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware.......2002-02-10

Bruce Feiler presents what one supposes to be an 'insider's' look at country music. He had access to Garth Brooks for what was suposed to be a magazine article (which never materialised) for about 48 hours total. Much of what is written is a re-hash of past articles, conjecture and 'sound bites' from Garth Brooks. I have had it on good authority from Garth himself to disbelieve the majority of what is written about him. For example, Mr Feiler portrays Mr Brooks as a 'womaniser' throughout school; Mrs Brooks (Garth's mum) had stated in several interviews Garth did not date widely, and was somewhat shy in that area.

There are several easily verified errors in the book. The Wynonna web sites deride this piece of fiction, and perhaps that is the best description: fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, smart, and fun to read.......1999-06-20

Growing up in Mississippi, I heard my share of country music, though I was much more a top 40 and rock and roll fan. I ended up working in radio (album rock radio) during the country-rock era (Charlie Daniels, Poco, Marshall Tucker, John Prine, etc.) and one of my favorite albums (that's how long ago this was) was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will The Circle Be Unbroken." So, while I can't say I'm an old time Hank Williams fan, I do have a fondness and familiarty with the music. But it turns out I didn't know that much about the music. Thankfully, Bruce Feiler has filled in all the blanks for me. His research is thorough and he weaves it seamlessly into the stories he has to tell on three good examples of Nashville in the '90's. It's a terrific mix of music history, market analysis, anecdote, and observation.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book; a must read for the Country star hopeful........1999-01-26

Very easy reading. Every time I had a question in my mind, Bruce answered it fully. I was truly impressed with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very Captivating, but highly sensational..........1998-09-15

O.k. here goes. I thought this book was tremendously captivating and informative. It shows a different side of two of the more super-superstars and also the hard knocks that a newcomer faces in the music business via Wade Hayes. I almost didn't read this book, simply because the artists had spoken out so much about how they didn't recommend it and did not approve of it. But, I think that every true fan of country music and even those who don't care for it so much, will get alot of useful and entertaining information from it. Alot of the outerworkings of the business, as well as behind the scenes accounts of the tabloids were what I believe to be the best part of the book. I am a dedicated Wynonna fan and after reading this book, have found that many things that were confusing before reading it, are not so confusing now: Strains between the Judds when they said everything was fine, about Wynonna's biological father, her suicide attempt after Naomi threw her out of the house. All very interesting reading and seems to have a "truth" ring to it.

However, I do advise that this book does have a sensational aspect to it. Feiler covers Garth Brooks and Wynonna at times that were tumultuous and very busy for the performers. But, it does give those who know very little about the business aspect of the music business, an insiders view on the workings of such.

    Book Description

If history is right, a 26 year-old beauty named Winnie Ruth Judd murdered her two best girlfriends one hot Phoenix night in 1931. Then she hacked up their bodies, stuffed the pieces into a trunk, and took them by train to Los Angeles as her baggage.

If history is right, she was sentenced to die but "cheated the gallows" by acting insane. She spent nearly 40 years in Arizona's insane asylum-flummoxing officials by escaping six times.

If history is right, she only got her freedom at age 66-after serving more time than any other convicted murderer in the history of the nation--because Arizona was finally tired of punishing her.

But if history is wrong, Winnie Ruth Judd's life was squandered in a horrible miscarriage of justice.

Award-winning journalist Jana Bommersbach reinvestigates the twisted, bizarre murder case that has captivated the nation for decades. She not only uncovers evidence long hidden, but gets Winnie Ruth Judd to break her life-long silence and finally speak.

In telling the story of this American crime legend, Bommersbach also tells the story of Phoenix, Arizona-a backwater town that would become a major American city-and the story of a unique moment in American history filled with social taboos.

But most of all, she tells the story of a woman with the courage to survive.
