4 out of 5 stars Not the best history lesson, but an incredible story.......2003-05-12

As most people, I read this book after the movie came out. I am a medival studies major and am intrigued by the story of William Wallace. This book was great. But there is much you need to know before you pick it up, mainly whether you are looking for a history lesson, or just a good read.
The story of Wallace is incredible. One man, against all odds, fighting for what he believes in. Much of this book is fiction. The author has created a hard, semi-satisfying life for Wallace, and has created his own reasons for William Wallace to wage war agains Edward I (Longshanks). But the truth is, that we really dont know why Wallace waged war in the first place. The battles were very well researched and the author was able to tell them acuratly and well, making you feel as if you are on the battlefield on Wallace's side.
Many people had a hard time with this novel, and gave it poor reviews, but if they give this book a poor review, then they should give all historical fiction bad reviews. It is impossible for an author to know the complete lives of a historical character, even with extensive research. The author, Randall Wallace, did a wonderful job.
I only have a few small complaints that I think could have been touched up on, and can throw many historian hopfulls off. The first being that it is said Longhanks dies soon after Wallaces death, but in truth, longshanks reigned for almost 3 years after Wallaces death. Another would be the affair between William Wallace and Princess Isebella. The author moved the marriage of Prince Edward and Isebella of France up a few years. They were not even married until years after Wallaces death, which makes the affair fiction.
As I stated at the beginning of this review, this is a wonderful book. A great story of courage, love, and a passion for your country that will never die, But if you are looking for a book about William Wallace that is based mainly on historical facts, you will not find it here.
This book is for any fan of the middle ages. I suggest putting aside all the bad reviews for sad reasons, and pick up a copy of this wherever you can find it.

4 out of 5 stars An epic battle for freedom.......2003-04-16

Heroes come in many forms, some lead armies to victory, some lead armies to defeat and some die as martyrs. William Wallace, the 13th century Scottish hero was most likely the greatest military leader of the century, if not for several centuries, and he did all three. He fought British rule, devising forms of combat that defeated the best military formations that the English had. If it had not been for the treachery of the Scottish nobility, he probably would have led the Scots to victory over the English and even to independence. An advocate of the commoners, he could have been a rarity of the times, a king awarded a crown by popular acclimation.
I really enjoyed the reading of this story. Wallace was a very brave man who was a reluctant fighter, taking up arms only after the English troops killed his wife. This is truly an epic tale that rivals all others, including those describing the feats of Greek and Roman arms. His response as he was publicly drawn and quartered was one of defiance to the end. He refused to beg the King's men for mercy, taking all of the pain that they could inflict.
This is a story of courage, deeply held belief, treachery, and posthumous triumph. Even though I know how it turns out, I will read the book very soon. I have not yet seen the movie.

2 out of 5 stars I wish..........2001-08-03

..I could say I loved the book as much as the movie but unfortunately, that's not the case. I always prefer books over movies so having seen this excellent movie a billion times (more or less), I decided to read the book. Talk about being disappointed! If I hadn't seen the movie first, this book would have been discarded after chapter one but instead, I just kept reading and hoping the story would pick up eventually. Alas, it just dragged on and on. I wonder if Mel Gibson read this book before making the movie? If he had, I think he would agree, his script is way off Mister Wallace's version of the event's which took place in Scotland. A lot of people who reviewed this book seemed to like it but I can only be honest in my opinion by saying I didn't like it and I suggest you stick to the movie version just for the action scenes alone.

1 out of 5 stars Great movie, poor book.......2001-06-13

I'm a huge fan of the movie. I think it had excellent everything and wonderful music. But the book was awful-if I hadn't seen the movie and felt some devotion to it, I would have quit in the middle. The movie was quite inaccurate, but the action and storyline made up for that. But how can I comment on the book? I could say it was poorly written, or I could say that the plot was deviated with holes, or that William's eye color changes, and we never know what Murron is embroidering, or I could just say I wasted my time reading it. Unfortunatly for Randall Wallace, I rarely forget. Let's just say I won't be reading any of his books anytime soon. Don't waste your money-just watch the movie.

5 out of 5 stars You die for honor and freedom, and get it at the end...........2001-05-31

Everyone wants of story of love and hatred, of honor and respect, about cowards and heroes... the story of the heroic William Wallace and his army. This tale consists of all these caracteristics. It`s an amazing true story of the English who dominate the Scottish lands. Everyone wanted freedom, but they all saw but they all saw in one man`s eyes that he wanted it the most, that man was William Wallace. Surprisingly, this war against the English and the Scottish didn`t start out as wanting freedom ; but revenge.

Book Description

Sir William Wallace of Ellerslie is one of history's greatest heroes, but also one of its greatest enigmas—a shadowy figure whose edges have been blurred by myth and legend. James MacKay uses all his skills as a historical detective to produce this definitive biography, telling the incredible story of a man who, without wealth or noble birth, rose to become Guardian of Scotland. William Wallace, with superb generalship and tactical genius, led a country with no previous warlike tradition to triumph gloriously over the much larger, better-armed, and better-trained English forces. 700 years later, the heroism and betrayal, the valiant deeds and the dark atrocities, and the struggle of a small nation against a brutal and powerful empire, still create a compelling tale.

3 out of 5 stars Ubermonkey says thumbs ...........2006-08-30

THE GOOD: The book is interesting but largely because of the target and not so much due to the execution of relaying the story about said target. This was my first step into the life of William Wallace and will admit that I enjoyed it, somewhat.

THE BAD: I felt like the book could have been laid out a little better. Through much of first part, it seemed like there was a lot of back filling about things other than Wallace. I understand the author needs to create the world in which Wallace was born, but to do so at the expense of leaving the subject of your book out I think is a mistake. I wanted more Wallace in these early chapters and while he wasn't totally absent, I think he could have been more present.

THE UGLY: Not being an expert on WW, I wonder at the inaccuracies within this book regarding his life. I know the main source comes from Harry's story but there are parts in the book where the author even casts doubts on the validity of Harry's writing. There were also parts where it was explained, with surprising detail, how WW had combatted numerous English foes by himself in an almost superhuman like way. Maybe it's true, maybe it's not...I don't know. But I did find myself wondering what was accurate adn what was not.

Ubermonkey says that there are probably better books one can buy regarding the outstanding life of William Wallace.

5 out of 5 stars best possible work with little availiable sources.......2005-05-08

I have read many reviews, and as a medieval history student people need to realize when writing about the middle ages many sources are not original. This is a great book, that argues from many points of where Wallace may have lived. They are guesses, but based on the best availiable sources. Also writersd need to take into consideration where the accounts came from, and how they were altered in such a way. Of course accounts from an english lord wont be in favor of wallace. What i did liek about the book, is how it is left out about the battle at york, which in the movie got peope excited. #1 sieges almost never worked for opposing armies, also if an opposing army did break through walls were lines with archers and it was rare that anyone would take the castle. #2 It was a small rebel army, nit a trained military, and at this point the whole english army would have been sent north for protection, so i highly doubt wallace would have sacked york, the movie is incorrect as usual. As for the book, the author does the best he can with what is given to him.

1 out of 5 stars brave travesty.......2003-09-12

As a Wallace aficionado, i looked forward to reading this, but to say i was disappointed was an understatement.
This badly researched book was full of inaccuracies.
The author puts forward an alternative Wallace birthplace, putting forward detail that the unsuspecting reader would probably take on board. For instance, he says "Corsbie is of course, now known as Crosshouse", whereas these two places are seperate entities.
He places one monument, that of Leglen Wood, 20 miles away from its correct location, and claims Wallace was born in Ayrshire, whereas the Wallace family were vassals of the Stewart family, who never owned land in this area, and so Wallace could not have been born there.
Dates are wrong, one monument he claims was built in 1970, was actually built in 1910.
I feel the author, no stranger to controversy, has jumped on the Wallace bandwagon, and has rushed this work out to take advantage of the boom caused by Braveheart. Many people see details in print, and assume they are true. This book has so many inaccuracies that it will actually lead its readers astray.

2 out of 5 stars I found it boring.......2003-08-15

I'm a big fan of the movie Braveheart, and of history, but I could never get into this book. It's written somewhere in between a novel and a work of history. Because it strattles this line it brings out the best of neither world.

The author clearly attempted to write a biography on Wallace based on Blind Harry's poems, but he filled in many details to poems that are probably embellished history. I just found the book rather dull.

5 out of 5 stars richly details history of Wallace and his rising.......2002-11-25

As a child of 9 I picked out the decor for my new room - Wallace Plaid - which dumbfounded my family since our Clans were MacGillivray, Ogilvie, Grant, Fraser and Montgomerie! But I thought Wallace such a great, sweeping figure. This was decades before Randall Wallace accidentally discovered William Wallace on a vacation in Scotland and read Anne Porter's Highland Chiefs. Wallace, to me, was such a true Patriot - not a Saint, but a man willing to go to the wall, to die for what he believed. Not many of us would walk in his shoes, so I have to admire his willingness to die for an idea.
James MacKay gives a richly details account of the Scottish clime of politics that formed and fermented Wallace. It might be a little bit more than the average reader would be interested in (I would suggest Grey's book on Wallace in that case), but for those wishing to know more without wading through Blind Harry, this is a wonderful work.

A perfect gift to that friend that watched Braveheart more than once!!

Book Description

William Wallace of Elderslie, younger son of a country knight, came to fame through his active opposition to the aggressive imperialism of England’s King Edward I. From political and social obscurity he seized control of the reins of government and became the first leader of his people in a war of liberation against a far larger and richer enemy—England—that would last for more than 60 years. Historians have seen Wallace as a man of the common people, a man who built an army from the patriotic masses when the Scottish nobility sided with the English. In fact, Wallace was a member of the nobility himself and his army little removed from the ordinary military conventions of the day. Chris Brown cuts through the myths still perpetuated today to produce the first biography of Wallace driven by contemporary medieval records rather than Victorian legends to present an accurate portrait of the life and career of Scotland’s greatest hero.

5 out of 5 stars A pick for any interested in Scottish history and culture.......2006-05-23

WILLIAM WALLACE: THE TRUE STORY OF BRAVEHEART is a pick for any interested in Scottish history and culture, who should consider it of ongoing interest, offering a new biography based on new research of medieval records. Wallace came to fame through his active opposition to English imperialism: a fight he was willing to die for. He achieved command but was unable to retain it in battle: with little experience in government or war he nonetheless made a name for himself in both areas. Lesser known is the fact that he was a member of the nobility himself: researcher Brown offers new insights on William Wallace's experiences and dispels many myths.

Do the traitors think, cried Wallace, "that by robbing Scotland of her annals, and of that stone, that they really deprive her of her palladium? Fools! fools! Scotland's history is in the memories of her sons; her palladium is in their hearts; and Edward may one day find that she remembers the victory of Largs, and needs not talismans to give her freedom."

5 out of 5 stars "God Armeth the Patriot".......2006-06-20

This classic should be read by all. It is a story of great courage and conviction, a story in which good brave men fight the scoundrels, and sweet strong ladies stand by their men. There is so much to be drawn from a book like this. I intend to read it several more times before my life is over and make it required reading for my children one day. We need more men as William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, boys such as the faithful Edwin, wives and daughters such as Isabelle and Helen. If Scottish Patriots filled the pews of our churches, the Church would rise up in a great way.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-12-01

I so enjoyed reading this book. It was beautifully written, although it took a little while to get used to the way they spoke then. It can not really be compared to the movie Braveheart, because although both the book and the movie are about William Wallace, the story line is different. This book is not just a quick way to learn the story line. You have to appreciate the old dialect, and the talent with which Jane Porter incorporated so much detail. This is truly a classic story and has become one of my favorite books.

4 out of 5 stars A good book, but very long.......2005-07-13

I enjoyed Scottish Chiefs. The plot was interesting, and it certainly helped me really get to know William Wallace, the main character. The book was exciting and well-written. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about William Wallace, the Bruces, and Edward I of England. But Jane Porter, the author, was not perfectly historically accurate. She added in some new characters that probably never existed--like Helen Mar, for example. This turned out okay, but readers should not assume that this is a perfect biography of Wallace. One thing I really did not like was the way all the women in the book were constantly fainting for no reason. I'm not sure if this was really the way people were than, but it annoys me. also, Porter portrayed Wallace as an extremely perfect person, more like an angel that a human, which was certainly wrong. The book is also very long, and sometimes hard to follw. But it was good overall. Also, my mother, who read it to me, my brother, and my sister as a part of our home education this past year, said thast it was a difficult book to read out loud, aned that it was not as accurate historically as it could have been.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Family Fare.......2002-11-12

This tale of Scots resistance against English King Edward is essential to those who grew up with "Scots wha hae wi' Wallace bled" in their ears. Others may enjoy it more for its romance. What pleased me most was seeing the medieval (turn of 13th-14th century) history through the focus of the English author Jane Porter, whose text was published in 1809, and the 1921 edition's illustrations by N.C. Wyeth. Atheneum's reissue is well bound and printed; the book feels pleasant to the hand. Most of all, Porter's latinate sentences beg to be read aloud. Although sold for ages 9-12, the text would be difficult for many of my college freshmen. Lucky the child with a parent to read it aloud! Lucky the adult with a child to read it to, or, failing that, to have these 500+ pages on the bedside table to peruse at day's end.

3 out of 5 stars Horrible Story, Waaaaaaaay too much detail.......2002-06-21

I read Scottish Chiefs, and I swear, it was the most boring story I have ever read! (Don't get me wrong, I've read The Broken Arrow, which has 2004 pages, five times.)
For one thing, who gives a [heck] about "He wore the green and brown checkered kilt with silver brooch over his shoulder. He had his iron sword grasped in his iron fist in a grip so tight his knuckles turned white, etc.
Frankly, if you wish to read a book on medieval battles and action, read Broken Arrow or any other book about that kind of subject.
Mrs. Porter gives way too much detail. She manages to turn something like "Braveheart" into a book as boring and drab as a granola bar.
One more thing. WHERE IN THE HELL IS ALL THE OTHER CHARACTERS? She has totally gotten rid of John De Balliol (The former king of Scotland and one of the key players in the Scottosh War for Independence), Angus (William's brother) and several others.
If you want action, good drama, and romance, watch Legends of the Fall or hell, even an old flick like The Longest Day.

This book puts those accounts together in a way that it gets the facts and legands to the reader in a fairly non-predjudice manor.

4 out of 5 stars William Wallace.......2006-03-11

This goes good with the other book that I have on him William Wallace: Guardiian of Scotland.
very helpful and interesting.

4 out of 5 stars A Candid Look at a Legend of a Man.......2006-02-08

This book was a laborious read, as most works of history are. But the information didn't come as a bombardment, it came in morsels amidst a story that the reader wants to know. It is widely believed this is the definitive depiction of Wallace, and it is clear why, it is not solely about the man himself, but about the political climate and the players and the men in power around him.

One will come away with eyes opened, and will understand the enigma that is William Wallace a little better. It is a book without a life of it's own, but it does a great justice to Wallace's.

2 out of 5 stars Over my head..........2005-10-24

With someone with little background in medieval history this book was well over my head. It felt as if the author assumed the reader to have a basic background on the subject. I do not and was hoping to build one with this book. Obviously I was wrong.

4 out of 5 stars very balance look at Wallace.......2004-04-16

The book I am reviewing is the "Second Edition" verison of this biography. I believed certain parts have been rewritten to insert the reference to Mel Gibson's Braveheart movie which put the character, William Wallace into the forefront of Scottish history for many people.

The biography on the whole, I thought to be very balance, very detail and superbly written within the context of time period. The author obviously understand his character within the boundary of that time period and this keep the biography honest and unbiased. I have read several Wallace biographies since that movie and I have to say this one is probably the best one. Good thing is that this book came out way before the movie so it doesn't have that taint of cashing in on the movie feel.

Fisher's book details the successful and unsuccessful battle Wallace waged against Edward's army. He details the atrocities on both sides, each equally inhumane. In the end, the reader gets a more realistic view of this great Scottish hero. He or she should also begin to understand why Scotland and England are two separate countries, each with their own history, united by a common sovereign.

Book Description

At the end of the 13th century, the oppressed Scots rebelled against England under the leadership of William Wallace and Robert Bruce. This gripping tale of courage, loyalty, and ingenuity takes readers into heroic company with a fictional protagonist, young Archie Forbes, who fights alongside the legendary heroes.

Download Description

I trust not, my son; but I fear that it will be long before we shake off the English yoke. Our nobles are for the most part of Norman blood; very many are barons of England; and so great are the jealousies among them that no general effort against England will be possible. No, if Scotland is ever to be freed, it will be by a mighty rising of the common people, and even then the struggle between the commons of Scotland and the whole force of England aided by the feudal power of all the great Scotch nobles, would be well nigh hopeless.

5 out of 5 stars Henty weaves a brilliant story .......2005-09-06

Liberty or death. This was the choice the people of Scotland in the 13th century faced if they rose up against their English ruler. Most would say it was no choice at all. Many of the Scottish nobles were English supporters. Few could be expected to rise up against the numerically overwhelming English army. The hero of the story, Archibald Forbes, joins the struggle for Scottish freedom led by the valiant Sir William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. The extraordinary valor and personal prowess of these men rival the deeds of the mythical heroes of chivalry.

5 out of 5 stars In Freedoms Cause.......2005-02-24

I highly reccommend G.A. Henty's In Freedom's cause to anyone age 10 and up who likes to read historical fiction. William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, and a ficticious charactor, Archibald Forbes, take the leading roles in fighting battles to stop the powerful English from taking over Scotland. This book is very closely based on factual hiistorical events. When England is very close to taking over scotland, William Wallace and Robert the Bruce fight overwhelming odds to get back their homeland.

5 out of 5 stars Best story of Wallace.......2004-09-23

I highly recommend this book to any lovers of historical adventure stories. The story is fast paced and carries you along with Archie in his adventures. Have a good map of Scotland and England handy to look up places as you read. Great way to learn history and geography!

5 out of 5 stars Great Historical Fiction and Adventure.......2004-05-12

Freedom's Cause has a brilliant plot and a fictional character as the protaganist. He starts off as a teen and then grows up through the time of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. The fictional protagonist interacts with historical characters from that period of Scottish History. The story is full of adventure, friendship, loyalty, honor, heroics, and history. Good values are presented. This book is great for anyone looking for something on Scottish history and which also is an outstanding novel.

This book is as excellent or better then any Nigel Tranter book I have read, like The Wallace and The Bruce Trilogy.

The accuracy of the historical period is superb and I have read much on this area of Scottish history. The persons discussed, the geography talked about, and the timeline presented is very accurate.

I highly recommend this and can't wait to read another Henty.

5 out of 5 stars Learned more reading this than a history textbook.......2003-09-25

This book is one of the most fascinating and interesting to readers who care about the past. For people who do not like history or to learn about the exciting feats accomplished by our predeseccors, I do not reccomend this book.
The story is about young Archie Forbes, a young man destined to be cheif of his clan. His father was killed when Archie was just a boy and his lands taken away by the Kerr family, nobles from nearby England. While Archie is determined to reclaim his family's lands he meets William Wallace and helps in the scottish revolution.

5 out of 5 stars a more readable version of Blind Harry.......2002-11-02

This is a work of tales of William Wallace, freely adapted from the poem of Blind Harry by Tom Scott, with illustrations by James Hutcheson. A very readable, quickie version of Harry's epic.

For those wishing Harry's version, but not caring to wade through the poem and some of its language.

Very good for young students.
