ASIN: 0674015886 |
Book Description
In the frenzied final years of the Weimar Republic, amid economic collapse and mounting political catastrophe, Walter Benjamin emerged as the most original practicing literary critic and public intellectual in the German-speaking world. Volume 2 of the Selected Writings is now available in paperback in two parts.
In Part 1, Benjamin is represented by two of his greatest literary essays, "Surrealism" and "On the Image of Proust," as well as by a long article on Goethe and a generous selection of his wide-ranging commentary for Weimar Germany's newspapers.
Part 2 contains, in addition to the important longer essays, "Franz Kafka," "Karl Kraus," and "The Author as Producer," the extended autobiographical meditation "A Berlin Chronicle," and extended discussions of the history of photography and the social situation of the French writer, previously untranslated shorter pieces on such subjects as language and memory, theological criticism and literary history, astrology and the newspaper, and on such influential figures as Paul Valery, Stefan George, Hitler, and Mickey Mouse.
Customer Reviews:
Beware of the translation.......2006-05-14
Harvard is doing non-German speakers a great service by compiling all of these essential essays in chronological order. I am baffled, however, that some of the translations are so inaccurate. Non-German readers should know that there are egregious errors in some of these translations, especially those by Rodney Livingstone. I have compared one of his translations closely with the original German and was shocked to find so many inaccuracies. In one sentence Livingstone translates into English the *exact* opposite of what Benjamin actually writes. He doesn't just get the wrong word (as he does elsewhere); he composes a sentence that is the precise negation of what Benjamin wrote. This is very worrisome and does not bode well for the rest of the volume. I have not closely compared the majority of the volume to the original-- I don't have the time for that. But from the little evidence I found in just a few hours it looks bad indeed.

Customer Reviews:
Highly disappointed!.......2007-07-16
I didn't get the above-mentioned item. It arrived not on 06.07.2007 but on 29.06.2006, when I was on my business trip. Actually, I was misled by your e-mail to me which said that the book would be delivered within the time interval from 06.07.2007 and 21.07.2007. When I came back from the business trip and tried to take the book from my post office they told me that my item had been already sent back to the sender, that is to your company, I guess.
Good job by Waite.......2006-03-18
Waite usually does a good job of translations. He generally seems to be the most objective of 19th Century esotericists and occultists.
Paracelsus was and is a huge influence on the subject of alchemy. Anyone who is interested in alchemy or the philosophy of the Renaissance would get much from this book.
The edition I have is the paperback reprint from Kessinger. In my experience, their reprints are of decent quality, clear, and readable. They make difficult-to-find texts affordable. I have several books published by them, and they are all of decent quality.
It belongs in the time in which it was written.......2006-01-02
Got them (both parts), glanced through and threw them both in the trash right there and then. The man wrote a treatise on the long life and yet he couldn't preserve his own to an old ripe age... Paracelsus is the name he assumed later in life - meaning superior Celsus (a Roman physician). That alone, in my eyes, warrants the treatment of his works in the way he treated the works of others before him. I have to give him - he was a prolific writer and some stuff he got right. But if you string words together randomly, after much writing you'll get something right.... for some this might be a very entertaining read but not for me. I can't stand mixing religion with science and his audacity in selling his thoughts/beliefs for facts knows no bounds.
Be sure to follow this up with Part 2!.......2005-10-04
Paracelus is my personal favorite of the "famous alchemists." He took an approach that diverged greatly from his contemporaries: "harmony of the man is the microcosm and Nature the macrocosm." He veered from soul purification and concentrated on how bodies got out of natural balance and how he could cure them. He summarized his own views by saying: "Many have said of Alchemy, that is for making of gold and silver. For me such is not the aim, but to consider only what virtue and power may lie in medicines." And I am sure that many of the pharmaceutical giants today wholeheartedly agree with him! The work is fascinating as well as the man. This book as well as Part 2 bring him fully to light for all of us to appreciate!
A Great Collection.......2001-07-08
The Hermetic and Alccemical Writings of Paracelsus the Great is an AWESOME collection of Alchemical/Hermetic material. It was my first "Paracelsian" book, and probably not my last. If you have little or no Alchemical/Hermetic knowledge though, I think you should wait before buying this one.
Book Description
The Talmud: The Steinsaltz Edition makes Judaism's great compendium of tradition, law, and legend readily accessible to the modern English reader for the first time.
Accepted as the authoritative basis for all codifications of Jewish law and subsequent codifications of Jewish law and practice, the multivolume Babylonian Talmud has been studied constantly by Jewish communities throughout the world since its completion in the sixth century.
Yet for most people, the complexity of the Talmud's Hebrew and Aramaic text is an almost impenetrable barrier to appreciating its riches. Even in translation, the unique system of logic and involved argumentation often baffle the inexperienced reader.
The Talmud: The Steinsaltz Edition makes it possible for everyone to read the Talmud because it is more than just a translation. Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz becomes your personal instructor, guiding you through the intricate paths of Talmudic logic and thought. His extensive introductions and commentaries make the text crystal clear by providing all the background information needed to follow it, while his illustrated marginal notes supply fascinating insights into daily life in Talmudic times.
This volume, Tractate Bava Metzia, Part One, is one of the first sections traditionally studied by newcomers to the Talmud, since it contains so many or' the basic elements common to all Talmudic logic. It focuses on the resolution of disputes that may arise in daily life and commercial transactions, such as rival claims to the ownership of property.
Many related issues involving claims inevitably come under examination, such as contracts (including marriage contracts and bills of divorce), loans, promissory notes, and other such documents. There is much discussion of how the courts should proceed, including whether or not an oath, which is considered by the Talmud to be a matter of gave consequence, was to be administered to the various claimants.
The extraordinary sensitivity of the courts to ensuring absolute justice for all parties is reflected on every page. And as with all Talmudic discussions, the interplay of personalities and the subtleties of human relationships give rise to a host of possibilities that reflect human life as a whole.
Book Description
The first of five anticipated volumes on the renowned monuments of Piedras Negras, Guatemala, describes the site and the history of exploration at this important center of Classic Maya civilization. It includes photographs and detailed line drawings of twelve of the inscribed sculpted monuments at Piedras Negras, as well as a map of the ruins.
All 19 volumes of the The Corpus of Maya Hieroglyphic Inscriptions published to date are now available from Harvard University Press.
Book Description
Eleanor Harz Jorden and Mari Noda, authors of the widely used language textbook Japanese: The Spoken Language, now offer the first volume of the much anticipated companion to it, Japanese: The Written Language. This new series is designed to enable the learner of Japanese to establish a solid foundation for communicating with the Japanese through the written language. It is arranged so that each lesson coordinates with the lesson in Japanese: The Spoken Language of the same number.
This first volume, devoted exclusively to the katakana syllabary, which is used to represent loanwords in Japanese, provides the most comprehensive pedagogical treatment of the subject available today. Audio files and flash cards are available from the web, and a workbook is available for separate purchase.
Customer Reviews:
Opps! Not what I was looking for.......2007-01-04
This product only has Katakana in it! There is a product that looks the same, but has Kanji instead. BE CAREFUL! It comes with an extra practice pad, which is nice.
Do not buy this book.......2006-07-21
Having studied Japanese for five years under three native speaking teachers, I can assure you that buying this book is the biggest mistake possible if you want to learn the Japanese. It is riddled with factual errors and is an overall convoluted approach to learning the Japanese writing system. Of the five Japanese textbook series that I have used, this one stands unparalleled as the absolute worst. To list the actual mistakes contained therein would be a gargantuan task that I am not about to begin. Let me give one example, something so elementary that it should stand as representation for the whole:
In a table of the Japanese characters and their pronunciations, the author includes the following as pronunciations: ti, tu, si. These sounds do not exist in Japanese and you will never hear them. They instead are supposed to be chi, tsu, shi. This is a fact that I have not seen misrepresented anywhere else, ever. There is no explanation of the pronunciation of r-based symbols in which the r is supposed to be pronounced as subtle combination of r and l. These mistakes (of which there are more, and more again in Jorden's other textbooks) are then spread throughout the entirety of the book. This drastically alters the sound of the language and you will find yourself quite embarrassed if you go to Japan and try to speak like this.
Do yourself a favor and buy something else.
The best introduction to Katakana available.......2005-10-30
Japanese: The Written Language, an updated version of Jorden's older Reading Japanese book. It has languished in a field test edition for years, but at last the final version of the book is starting slowly to come out.
This book, as the name implies, is 123 pages (plus an associated workbook) devoted entirely to katakana, the syllabery used in Japanese primarily to represent foreign loan words. The first thing that may strike the purchaser is the length of the book in comparison to the subject covered. Many Japanese courses deal with katakana by handing out a table to their students and asking them to memorize it within a week, give a quiz, and then assume the students have mastered them after that. The result is people who have been studying Japanese for years but still cannot reliably read items written in katakana.
The subject of this book is not simply acquiring knowledge of the symbols, but developing a true *reading* knowledge of katakana. Knowing how a single symbol is pronounced (or knowing the romanized equivalent) does you no good if you cannot read words that contain the symbol. In addition to introducing the symbols, the book spends a great deal of time teaching the student to convert foreign words to Japanese, and vice versa. Armed with this knowledge, the student can read a good amount of authentic material such as menus and catalogs. (For those readers who are interested in video games, an enormous amount of material in all kinds of video games are written in katakana.)
This last point also explains why katakana are covered before hiragana. Much more authentic Japanese can be read with only katakana than with only hiragana.
Given the subject of the book, it does not directly deal with the pronunciation of Japanese. It is correlated with the book Japanese: The Spoken Language that covers the topic in more depth, and the learner is assumed to already have some knowledge of pronunciation and the spoken language. However, audio files are available on the web for every example in the book so that the sounds of the words can be heard spoken by a native speaker. The book utilizes the same style of romanization that is used in JSL -- some people may be unfamiliar with the standard type of romanization used in Japan that contains such syllables as "si" and "tu", but it should always be remembered that no romanization system can teach pronunciation on its own. Even if Hepburn romanization were used in the book (and so the syllables were written "shi" and "tsu"), that still would not enable you to pronounce the syllables correctly without hearing them spoken. (If you are interested in why the author has chosen this kind of romanization, the introduction to JSL explains it.)
My chief complaint with this book is the price; at some point in the future when JWL is completed, hopefully a single volume will be published that is more economical. For those working on a tighter budget, the field test JWL or even the older Reading Japanese are fairly good as well, and also contain hiragana and some kanji practice. But this is a highly recommended book for anyone going to Japan with no knowledge of the writing system, or for someone who is starting the long process of learning to read Japanese.
Book Description
For more than 25 years the Peabody Museum has been publishing The Corpus of Maya Hieroglyphic Inscriptions under the editorial and artistic direction of Mayanist Ian Graham. The goal of this unique series of folio volumes is to document in photographs and detailed line drawings all known Maya inscriptions and their associated figurative art. When complete, the Corpus will have published the inscriptions from over 200 sites and 2,000 monuments. The series has been instrumental in the remarkable success of the ongoing process of deciphering Maya writing, making available hundreds of texts to epigraphers working around the world.
Each volume in the series consists of three fascicles, which examine an individual site or group of neighboring sites and include maps of site location and plans indicating the placement monuments within each site. Each inscription is reproduced in its entirety in both photographs and line drawings. The text of each volume presents descriptive information about the sites and monuments and their associated artifacts.

Not Thrilled.......2006-03-23
There was no picture of this book so I ordered the wrong book. My kid needed the work done right away so we were forced to keep it. This book is part one of a group but I could have bought both parts in one book and I ended up having doing that so I ended up spending a lot more than I had to. If I had seen a picture of the book, i would have known. They were two very distinct colors.
It was a total bummer.
