5 out of 5 stars Another powerful, practical book from Dan.......2007-07-28

Have you ever spent hours writing the perfect sales letter, only to send it out and get little or no response? This information-packed book is sure to show you where you went wrong. And it takes you through all the basic steps and concepts that go into writing amazingly effective sales letters. Of course, there's no substitute for practice, but this book will get you off to a solid start.

Known as the "No B.S." guy, Dan Kennedy is a crack copywriter and consultant who regularly helps clients make millions of dollars. From my personal experience (and I have a shelf full of Dan Kennedy's stuff), all his books are worth their weight in gold. But be warned, he has a straight-up, slightly sarcastic style of communication that you either love or hate. Personally, I love it. And I confidently recommend anything and everything Dan Kennedy writes or sells.

5 out of 5 stars Great book with great ideas simplified.......2007-06-23

This book is as good as a thick textbook on copywriting. Mr. Kennedy doesnt waste words and gets to the point in every sentence in this book. Also of great interest are copies of sales letters he wrote for his clients.
What I liked about this book was chapter/step 6: Getting your sales letter read. There are generous examples of attention-getting headlines and fill in the blank headlines. A lot of these caught my attention and I'm very picky about which emails to open because I've looked at thousands of them, but the samples in this book are still good to use.
I like this book because it is like AWAI's copywriting course condensed into one book.
Read this book today and start writing better copy.

I received this book in the mail and read the whole thing in one night! It was a very practical, no-nonsense, reference guide. This one has it's own special place on my desk. Buy it!

3 out of 5 stars Get started, then move on........2003-06-30

"Cover Letters for Dummies" is a decent introduction to writing the perfect cover letter to land that dream job. You will definitely learn the purpose of cover letter, and how it differs from the resume. Once you get that part, it's time to move on to another book. This book may contain good explanations and theory as to how the hiring process works, but the examples are absolutely useless. Further, the only actual useful information could have been condensed into a one-page summary. The rest of the book is filler. Unless you want to be taken as a fool by potential employers, I suggest that you find another book.

3 out of 5 stars Maybe a little too dummy.......2002-04-10

This is a handy reference especially for those who don't know much about writing cover letters and who haven't ever been to a career counselor. It's also useful for anyone else, though I can't imagine that it's much different from other books on the topic.

The major annoyance I had was with the sample letters that are included, and with some of Joyce Kennedy's suggestions, which seemed more obnoxious than anything. I can see how some employers may find them amusing, but if I were in a human resources department, I would not hire many of the people who wrote these examples.

To be sure, some of the samples are alright, and there is much to learn in the many tips that Kennedy provides. If you're seeking to be a competitive prospective employee, you may find it worthwhile to get this book. I hope, however, that there is another book on cover letters out there with sample letters that are still interesting to read, but more serious and intelligent.

5 out of 5 stars Cover Letters for Dummies.......2001-12-19

I had no idea how I was going to help my friend write a good cover letter until I read your book. The first time I read your book I concentrated on you top ten "do" and "don't do" things for a "red hot cover letter". That list and the examples provided of "cover letters" in your books was a tremendous help.
It is a must book to have for anyone looking to sell themselves to an employer for a job.

5 out of 5 stars A tremendous job hunting resource.......2000-12-07

This is not just a book on cover letters; it's a wealth of knowledge on the entire job-hunting process. Joyce Lain Kennedy has put together a tremendous resource for the current or soon to be job hunter, which is really most of us.

I know people scoff at Dummies books, especially for highly technical subjects, but this book is the perfect format for the vast collection of job-hunting facts, ideas and wisdom in this book. The author does an excellent job of presenting a lot of material in a way that is clear, entertaining and extremely readable.

I highly recommend this book, and liked it so much I went out and bought her other two books, Resumes' and Job Interviews for Dummies, which I will be reviewing as I finish them.

    2 out of 5 stars too red-hot!.......1999-11-03

This book is chock full of cutesy icons and useless advice. The author spends far too much time touting her previous book (resumes for dummies) and dispensing annoying catch phrases as opposed to giving solid writing tips. We've recieved letters like those featured in the book and dumped them directly in the trash. Unless you are applying for a sales job at a used car lot, don't bother using the letters in this book.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Moving and Powerful.......2004-07-01

When you first listen to this, it takes a while to get into it. The first speech at the 1964 democratic convention has a poor audio quality and RFK takes a while to get warmed up before we hear the famous Shakepearean ode to his recently deceased brother JFK. Some editing would have helped that one. Then we hear RFK give a heartfelt, but sincere speech on the need for young people to repudiate bigotry at Ole Miss in 1966. Still pretty relevant. The 1967 speech on ghetto conditions shows amazing insight for a White man who was born rich.

But the tour de force here is the improvised speech to Black Indianapolis residents upon the assassination of Martin Luther King. I've heard excerpts of this before, but to hear it in what appears to be its entirety is extremely moving and one of the best recorded speeches I've ever heard aside from MLK himself and Nelson Mandela's CD. To hear how RFK was able to speak so sincerely and hopefully on such a tragic occasion will really make you beleive in the nest of human nature and that alone is worht the price of admission.

Next we hear a more measured and formal speech on the aftermath of the King killing recorded a day later. Still worht a listen about the futility of violence, all the more ironic considering that RFK himself would soon become the victim of such violence.

I've read books that complied RFK's speeches, but that does not match actually hearing them. Do youself a favor and get this. Now all that needs to be done is to release a DVD of the 1988 documetnary RFK in His Own Words.

5 out of 5 stars RFK: In His Own Words.......2001-01-06

RFK: In His Own Words gives the listener a taste of the atmosphere during the turbulent and dynamic times of the 1960s. It depicts RFK as one of those rare leaders who had the ability to inspire an entire generation not only in the United States but around the world with his eloquence and appeal for a better life for all. He challenged the way we think about ourselves and each other and sought to close the gaps between rich and poor, black and white. RFK: In His Own Words begins with his memorable speech in tribute to his brother at the 1964 Democratic National Convention and contains several speeches addressing the many societal issues of the 60s, mainly the divisions resulting from racial tensions and the public opposition to the war in Vietnam. You begin to get a grasp of RFK's political views and you witness his maturation as a politician and statesman. From his statement announcing his candidacy for president to his touching and largely impromptu announcement of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to a stunned audience in Indianapolis and his appeal for compassion and love and not hatred and division. It concludes with an emotional eulogy at his funeral by his brother Senator Ted Kennedy that leaves you with thoughts on what could have been if not for the tragic loss of yet another Kennedy brother who has been taken from us at a time when his leadership was most needed.

      5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!.......2000-09-18

This is a single CD approximately 50 minutes long that provides highlights of some of RFK's best, and most memorable speeches. There are 12 tracks including RFK's speech at the democratic national convention in 1964 and his speech announcing the assasination of Martin Luther King.

This is an excellent introduction to the RFK's political beliefs, and reminds the listener why he continues to captivate the nation's hopes. The CD jacket provides a brief historical background to each of the speeches and is helpful for those with less knowledge of the current events of that time. I would also recommend a compilation of speech excerpts put together by his son Maxwell Kennedy entitled "To Make Gentle the Life of this World." Neither source provides the complete text of his speeches, but they distill the essence of what he offered America in his time.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2000-08-04

This book is an excellent compliation of Robert Kennedy's speeches. The speeches give an excellent overview of the times and issues Robert Kennedy was living in and his responses to same. His frequent references to classical literature not only serve to augment his points, but to include the listener/reader in his knowledge base. Robert Kennedy was a man who was universally recognized as a diligent worker and one who not only set, but met personal goals. His determination was evidenced from the football field (where he played with a broken leg in college to secure the coveted Harvard letter) to the presidential platform, where he held his own with some rather formidable competitors/opponents. His knowledge of and appreciation for classical literature is a true nod to his intelligence. He became self-educated in adult life classical works. He also became self educated and personally involved in the lives and issues of minorities and persons living below the poverty line. The contrast between these areas of his self education further emphasize the complexity of this man. Robert Kennedy comes across as sincere in his efforts and his work record will certainly support that finding. Robert Kennedy was by far the most interesting of the brothers of his generation and his work record was exceptional in his tenacity and dogged determination.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Affordable, but not comprehensive.......2005-03-09

This translation of Elspeth Kennedy's groundbreaking edition of the original, short-form romance of Lancelot Do Lac is extremely helpful to readers interested both in Old French medieval romance and Thomas Malory and his sources. The Prose Lancelot went on to become the centerpiece to the massive Vulgate or Lancelot-Grail cycle of romances which spanned the tale from the arrival of the Grail in Britain all the way to King Arthur's passing.

This version, however, is centered solely on the youthful adventures of Lancelot - how he was raised in the magical Lake, came to Camelot to be knighted, fell in love with the Queen, and made a name for himself while in her service. It covers the discovery of his name and his intense friendship with Galehaut, a man who literally gives up everything to secure the friendship of the title character. This early version of the story ends with Galehaut's death, and is not linked to the begetting of Galahad, the quest for the Grail, or the eventual fall of the Round Table.

The other drawback is that, in order to keep the edition inexpensive enough to meet the needs of the student, those segments of the romance not directly concerned with Lancelot (including a large number of adventures of Gawain, Hector, and Bors) are dealt with in short summaries rather than full translation.

However, until the full cycle is available in an expensive paperback series (the full Lancelot-Grail cycle was recently translated by a team of scholars, headed by Norris J. Lacy, as Lancelot-Grail: The Old French Arthurian Vulgate and Post-Vulgate Cycles in Translation, but only in hardcover at an outrageously scholarly edition price) this will fill the need for at least a taste of the original Lancelot story.

      Book Description

The previously unpublished written legacy of America's most famous patriarch that sheds new light on his public and private persona.

Joseph P. Kennedy remains one of the most enigmatic and controversial figures in American history. From his humble beginnings as the son of Irish immigrants to his meteoric rise to statesman, diplomat, and finally to First Father, he has been both beloved and vilified. In Hostage to Fortune: The Letters of Joseph P. Kennedy, Amanda Smith has unearthed an extraordinary treasure of her grandfather's correspondence and several previously unseen photographs in a collection that reveals his metamorphoses. It is not only a living history of Kennedy's life, but also a revelation of his vision of his own family as the embodiment of the American dream.

In the only firsthand record of his life, Hostage to Fortune begins in 1914, with the honeymoon of Joe and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy in Atlantic City and ends in 1961 with Joe's disabling stroke. In between, we see the public and private Kennedy-father, husband, film producer, and New Deal government official. The correspondence between his wife and nine children is a completely loving one that too often ends in loss and grief. His relationships with the great figures of the age-Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Neville Chamberlain, Pope Pius XII, and Charles Lindbergh-show him courting friendships but also fighting for his beliefs, a trait that would ultimately end his public career. At once a fitting tribute to her grandfather, a great historical work, and a chronicle of America's greatest family, Hostage to Fortune will engage American history lovers as well as a public who continues to be fascinated by the Kennedy family.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars A nice start but...........2006-04-05

Amanda Smith does a fair job in assembling a number of letters to, from and about her grandfather, Amb. Joseph P. Kennedy. She does not hold back some of the more unsavory parts of his life, from the affair with Gloria Swanson to the use of racist terms for blacks and disparaging comments about Jews. Her introductary essay is very moving and well written. Certainly this book helps dispel a number of the myths that the sensationalist books on the Kennedy patriarch seem to propel.

And yet there is much more that needs to be done. These can not be all of Kennedy's letters; we know that a number of them remain almost inaccesable to researchers. Furthermore, while some of Joseph Kennedy's public speeches and statements are included (for example his endorsement of FDR in the 1940 campaign from which the book takes its name), a number of key speeches (such as Kennedy's testimony in support of Lend Lease and his radio speech on the same issue from January 1941-speeches that do a great deal to dispel the myth of Kennedy as a pure isolationist) are not included.

Without more access to the Joe Kennedy papers, he will remain a mythical figure, the target for sensationalists and scandal mongers. Kennedy's important role in American life and politics warrant more attention and this collection is not a bad start but much more needs to be done.

1 out of 5 stars White wash of a dark family.......2005-03-13

I suppose if you have not read any legitimate studies about the Kennedy's you might find this book interesting, but it really is a very selective and misleading account of a family that has had a major impact on the USA. While it is good to see these letters published, I suspect that there are hundreds more which will never see the light of day since they would paint a much more balanced picture of this family. Joseph P. Kennedy was a very rich, very influential pol in Democrat Party politics. He was also someone who got in bed with the Mafia, which probably led to the death of JFK, got into bed with numerous Hollywood sluts, which gave his sons their lack of a moral compass, was a physical coward when it came to dealing with Fascism, and a bigot who didn't really have a problem with Hitler's "final solution" in getting rid of the Jews he hated from the core of his being. But he did a good job of using his millions to steal the 1960 election through voter fraud to get his son elected. I suspect that he never gave a thought to whether it was all worth it while seeing his sons buried. The most interesting thing about these letters however is that his remaining spawn, Teddy, is really the apple of his father's eye. A total pol, with zero understanding of the need for some view of the future through something other than a politician's lens, JPK Sr. was a great teacher for Teddy's willingness to turn a blind eye to evil and run for cover when the going got tough. A revealing book when you consider that the editing done was to put this family in the best light. But at least it is a start, and future revelations will show this book to be the unbalanced white-wash that it is.

5 out of 5 stars HISTORICAL MISSIVES - A PEEK BEHIND THE CURTAIN.......2001-04-20

Famed patriarch Joseph Kennedy Sr.'s granddaughter, Amanda Smith (she is the daughter of Jean Kennedy Smith) did an extraordinary job of collecting missives written by various family members over a period of nearly half a century. The years 1914-1961 are meticulously laid out in militarily neat precision; it is through these letters that readers glean insights into the dynamics of a famous family.

My favorite parts in the book were the letters to, by and about the late Senator Robert Kennedy. Third son and seventh child of patriarch Joseph Kennedy, readers are treated to witness his growth and development, almost from the beginning. A composition he wrote at age 13 describing himself and his preferences is enlightening. One can smile at the boy who strove to keep up with his older siblings revisited in the man who achieved leadership status. From all accounts, Robert Kennedy was a diligent worker; the boy who sought to make himself heard by his siblings and by Joe, Sr. became the man who served as the voice for many. In adult life his voice was one that was very much heard and resounded throughout history. In reading this, it was impossible not to cheer his progress and feel encouraged by what he accomplished in his lifetime.

This is a delightful "peek behind the curtain" into the dynamics of generations of Kennedys.

      I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars The life of Joseph Kennedy in his own hand........2001-01-09

What a nice surprise to see a book about the Kennedy family based on fact. Smith's choice of letters help the reader visualize Joseph Kennedy as father, businessman, and ambassador. These letters are as historically important as they are touching. Smith's work has given us first hand accounts of many great historical events of the 20th century. This book will prove to be an important resource for biographers as well as a wonderful gift to Smith's own family. Highly recommend.

      5 out of 5 stars Superb Book!.......2001-01-05

I have read countless books on the Kennedys and I've got to say this is, by far, one of the most valuable books I've read.

Amanda Smith, who is Joseph P. Kennedy's grandaughter, did a phenomenal job gathering correspondences between Joe Kennedy and family members, dignitaries, colleagues and friends during the years of 1914-1961. The manner in which Smith compiled the letters allows for a smooth and enjoyable read of the book.

I am quite impressed (and thankful!) that Smith meticulously documented and made footnotes of the individuals who were either the recipient or author of a letter or are mentioned in the correspondence - as it provides the reader with a much better understanding of the context of the letter.

I've always had a strong appreciation and interest in reading original documents and writings. Amanda Smith truly did a fantastic job editing the letters and showing a new side of Joe Kennedy which I never saw before.

Definately well worth the cost of the book and most certainly recommended with the highest regard for those who enjoy reading about the Kennedys, political science, or correspondences.

      Book Description

Part history, part gossip-fest, and part fiction, The Secret Letters is compellingly set against the glittering backdrop of Hollywood and Washington during the 1950s and 1960s, and reveals Marilyn and Jackie as never before. Compulsively readable, the letters present the two legends as friends and enemies, the wife and the mistress, both in love with the same man. They reveal how much Jackie knew about Marilyn's affair with JFK and offer a chilling theory about Marilyn's death. Wendy Leigh, The New York Times bestselling author of Prince Charming: The John F. Kennedy, Jr., Story, has created a daring concept and has delivered it in fascinating detail. Each letter is based on real documents and true events, and is rich with factual research on both women, the turbulent era in which they lived and loved, and the real characters who touched their lives. A dazzling tour de force of empathy and imagination, The Secret Letters is a hypnotic read that will enthrall Marilyn and Jackie fans.

3 out of 5 stars Ludicrous but Entertaining!.......2007-04-16

I have never felt compelled to write a review for Amazon, but after reading this book, I felt I had to. I am by no means a Marilyn or Jackie fanatic, but I have read a few non-fiction books on them both. From the little knowledge I have on their personalities, I find it ridiculous that either of them would react or respond in the way portrayed by Ms. Leigh.

I realize that this is historical fiction, however, if you do decide to buy this book, remember that it is much more fiction than history. I find it amusing that the author tends to throw in historical events like Einstein passing, or the 50's quiz show scandal to somehow make the book seem authentic.

Also, from what little I know about Jackie, she was certainly aware of Jack's affair with Marilyn almost from the beginning. Jackie hated Marilyn and found her an annoyance. I hardly think she would have been so cordial to her husband's mistress.

However, as ludicrous as this book is, I have to admit it is a page turner and very entertaining. If you need an easy, somewhat dumbed down book to escape from reality for a while - this is the book for you!

1 out of 5 stars stupid idea for a book.......2007-02-27

why would anyone want to read a fictional book on MM and Jackie O??? especially when there are real, non-fiction books out there. they never wrote 1 letter to each other! i think ms. leigh is desperately trying to make $/cash in (both of these women are legends, so both of them is guaranteed extra $), so she decided to write this; stoop so low to make up a correspondonce between the two women. i'm not getting down on ms.leigh personally, i'm sure she's probably a good writer, great storyteller, and very intelligent. but the idea of this book seems pathetic. maybe it's me, but i just don't get it. i guess it's only for people who like fiction and made up stories to pass the time. i like the real stuff. i would never buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Crafted Tale of a Hollywood Legend and an Enigmatic First Lady..........2007-02-01

Jackie O and Marilyn Monroe are two of the most fascinating and legendary women in history. Marilyn remains to this day a silver screen goddess and Hollywood legend, even 45 years after her tragic death. Jacqueline Onassis, also known as Jackie Kennedy, was the iconically fashionable first lady, married to a beloved President who was eventually assassinated before her very eyes.

President Kennedy reportedly told British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan that if he didn't have nonmarital sex at least once a day he got a headache. His affairs were no mystery, and it was said that Jacqueline willingly turned a blind eye to them. Marilyn Monroe was one of J.F.K's most well-known mistresses. She fell in love with him, and in later years when her relationship with J.F.K ended, she also began a relationship with his brother, Bobby Kennedy.

This novel creates a fictional relationship between Marilyn Monroe and Jackie O. through the use of written correspondence letters. As a reader you are transported into these women's lives during the 1950's and 60's, a time of great turmoil for each of them. They exchange letters with each other and enter into a strange sort of friendship, though by all accounts they should be enemies. Each letter beautifully illustrates the personality and wit of the letter writer, and includes factual details obtained through extensive research of these two women, who were polar opposites, yet found themselves in love with the same man.

The story that unfolds is tinged with real-life events, such as Marilyn's infamous serenading of the President at his birthday gala. Although this is an imagined secret correspondence between Marilyn and Jackie, I almost wish it were real because these characters truly come alive before your eyes. Their thoughts and emotions are very real, and it makes you wonder if perhaps they *could* have had some sort of friendship.

I admire both of these women, and this book was a very special treat for me because I'm a very big Marilyn Monroe fan. Although this is a fictional account of events, I truly enjoyed it, and I highly recommend it to any chick lit lovers.

      4 out of 5 stars SHOCKING.......2006-05-16

So Jackie thought Onassis was ugly but she liked him because of his money - everyone knew that from day one. JFK had no morals; Hard to believe Mr. and Mrs. President have to pay for their meals in the White House. That's a disgrace. Marilyn Monroe was very smart even tho she played the dumb blonde. She wrote she'd never kill herself. I still believe that Jack and Robert had someone murder Marilyn as she knew too much and could cause problems; their solution: kill her, problem solved. Interesting about John Wayne being caught with a guy. He seemed so macho.

      1 out of 5 stars unfounded.......2006-05-05

I must agree with the initial reviewer. This book tries to compartmentalize the lives of two intelligent and fascinating women: one is the sensuous, voluptuous, and crazy woman; the other is the refined, asexual, matronly woman. Boo! These are misleading and misogynist portrayals that have been perpetuated by all things unfounded. Nothing original in that notion! I think historical fiction, as a genre, is also misleading. This is done by an author who does not, in the tradition of historical research, make hypotheses, and then tries to disprove them by researching documentary evidence. I suggest, the biography, by donald spoto. it is an immense tome that's focus is not solely on the studio portrayal of marilyn, but on the multi-faceted individual, and the events that potentially led to the image that exists today. it also makes a strong, and factual, case on her death (sans conspiracy theories, which are, in my opinion, inherently flawed).

5 out of 5 stars LISTEN TO ROBERT KENNEDY.......2000-08-04

This collection of speeches provides a good picture of the man who would be president in 1968. It is an interesting progression of his thoughts on the issues of the day, issues which remain relevant today. In mulling over his words, one is struck by the man's sincerity -- I remember when I was a child, I would say, "Senator Kennedy is for real! He really does care about people!" The man's unusually high level of committment is readily apparent in his words. He was obviously somebody who set and met personal goals throughout his life -- in 1965 he climbed Mt. Kennedy, although he was an acrophobe; in adult life he educated himself in classical literature, thus increasing his knowlege base; he became personally involved with minorities and persons living in poverty and made these issues his own personal quest. He made himself accessible to his constituents and his works today serve as a model of a very committed man. This is something worth having.

I found this book to be a very indepth resource about a virtually unknown American explorer/adventurer. The author's inexhaustive research into the subject is astounding and enlightening. William Darby made considerable contributions to the early mapping of the state of Louisiana as well as many other regions including Pennsylvania. His work was used by other unscrupulous editors and mapmakers, who gave themselves credit for Darbys work. Anyone interested in early geography and mapping of the Uinted States will find this book a goldmine.
