Book Description
The New Testament is the story of how all the promises made by God in the Old Testament were keptâand what that means for us today. The nation of Israel had many hopes: hope for a deliverer, hope for restored fellowship with God, and hope for the world to be put right. The New Testament explains how those promises were kept and how, if we are Christians, they are kept in us as well.
Mark Dever surveys the historical context, organization, and theology of each New Testament book, in light of God’s Old Testament promises. His message is that of the New Testament itself, one of hope fulfilled.
âMany Bible readers are familiar with individual trees while failing to see the forest. They are in great danger of misinterpreting the parts of the Bible they read because they do not see the entire structure of a Gospel like John or an epistle like Ephesians. Mark Dever fills a gaping need with his sermons on each of the individual books.â
â
Thomas R. Schreiner
Teaching Pastor, Clifton Baptist Church, Professor of New Testament, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
âMark Dever’s approach is thematic without ignoring the literary and theological structure of the books and is thus a stimulus to doctrinal preaching.â
â
Graeme Goldsworthy
Moore Theological College, Sydney
âHere is a vigorous, juicy, engaging, life-centered, God-honoring set of sermons, brilliantly overviewing the entire New Testament: a truly rich resource from which to benefit and borrow. Dr. Dever is a Puritan in twenty-first-century clothing, and it shows.â
â
J. I. Packer
Professor of Theology, Regent College
âMark Dever knows that Christians cannot be powerfully influenced by the Bibles they do not know. So here is the antidote: a biblical flyover that reveals the contours and glories of the New Testament landscape so that it becomes familiar geography to the soul. This book will grace many lives.â
â
R. Kent Hughes
Pastor, College Church, Wheaton, Illinois
âA pastoral overview of the entire New Testament from the heart of a preacher who wants his people to know and live the truth. These expositions are theologically rich, biblically faithful, and loaded with superb introductions, illustrations, and applications.â
â
J. Ligon Duncan III
Senior Minister, First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, Mississippi
âWhether you are a Christian seeking a better understanding of the Bible, or a pastor seeking to preach âthe whole counsel of God,’ this unique and invaluable resource provides a wealth of insight that will serve you for years.â
â
C. J. Mahaney
Sovereign Grace Ministries, Author of
The Cross Centered Life
âThis outstanding series of bird’s-eye studies of the New Testament books will enable all Christians to feed deeper from God’s Word and equip teachers to feed others. They expand the mind, warm the heart, and challenge the will.â
â
Vaughan Roberts
Rector, St. Ebbe’s Church, Oxford, England, Author of
God’s Big Picture
âUnusually prophetic utterances from the heart of the nation’s capital, these overview introductions to the most salient truths of each book of the New Testament are vintage Mark Dever. Dever’s scholarship abounds as all of his knowledge is here poured into truths that will transform a person, a church, or a nation.â
â
Paige Patterson
President, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
âIs biblical exposition a lost art? Not if this book is any indication. This book is a gem and it belongs on every Christian’s bookshelf.â
â
R. Albert Mohler, Jr.
President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
Customer Reviews:
Great book!! The New Testament truly is "Promises Kept".......2007-04-18
I tend to under-rate books more than I over-rate them, so the fact that I have found this so helpful is an indication of how good this really is. I could go into details, but there is just so much that I can't do it justice in this setting. Get it, read it, and benefit from it and you will not be disappointed.
Big Picture Sermons.......2006-05-12
Do you like expository sermons, or do you associate them with boring explanations of every single phrase in a passage of scripture, with no detail too picayune for a long explanation? I happen to like the sort of expository preaching that moves phrase by phrase, or word by word (There is just nothing so trivial in text that I'm not interested!); but I know some of you are big picture sort of people, and if that's what you are, then The Message of the New Testament by Mark Dever contains your kind of expository sermons: Sermons that focus on the main themes--the big picture--of scripture.
There are twenty-eight sermons in this book--one overview of every book of the New Testament, and one introductory sermon overviewing the New Testament as a whole. Each sermon was originally preached by Mark Dever in his church--Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. Overview-type sermons are unusual (I haven't heard many, have you?), and I would guess that they are more difficult to prepare than the more usual sort of expository sermon. I can only begin to imagine how much work it was to produce this series of sermons, but I'm glad Mark Dever went to all the trouble. It's a fresh new way of looking at the New Testament and what it is teaching us.
The main portion of The Message of the New Testament is divided into three sections: [...] Jesus, containing the sermons on each of the gospels and Acts; Key Ideas for the Times, containing the sermons on all of Paul's epistles; and Living in the Real World, containing the rest--Hebrews through Revelation. Each sermon contains a main body, concluding applications, a prayer, and then a section of questions for reflection that build and extend upon what could be learned from the sermon.
This is a long book--547 pages--and as you might expect with sermons, the text is dense, although not difficult to understand. I started The Message of the New Testament in January and read some of it almost every day, but only finished it up this week. It's not the kind of book I could skim because I wanted to get every single bit of it, since there was so much to learn.
Don't let that it took me so long to make my way through this book scare you off. It was certainly worth the time and effort. I looked forward to each reading session, even if it was only a few stolen minutes while I waited in the car for my son to finish up one of his activities. If I hadn't received the companion to this book--The Message of the Old Testament--in the mail last week, I probably would have been a little sad to finish it up. But as things stand, I've got a new, 800+ page book to start.
And I'd be willing to bet that if you take the time to read it, you'll learn something, too. I might even promise you that.
Collection of sermons as a study resource.......2006-02-14
Mark Dever has written a companion volume to his forthcoming book The Message of the Old Testament: Promises Made. Both books serve as overviews of each Testament. Dever is the Senior Pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. In this book, he has compiled 27 of his sermons - where every chapter is described as an "expositional overview sermon" on each of the New Testament books. Dever explains in the introduction, "The sermons in this book are more expositional than topical, but they are expositional with a difference. Rather than looking at particular Scripture passages through a microscope, we are looking down from an airplane." (page 16)
What an amazing resource for believers, lay leaders, and pastors alike who are looking for a decidedly biblical, yet practical, overview of the New Testament. Since each chapter was originally a sermon, there is a very logical flow to the reading. The accompanying outlines, accessible writing style, and scholarly approach to the material makes for an invaluable teaching and study resource. Each chapter also concludes with some thought-provoking questions that are great for personal study or small group dynamics.
I wholeheartedly recommend this exceptional resource for its doctrinally sound, yet very understandable "Big Picture" treatment of the meaning of the New Testament. This will be a classic in personal and church libraries for many years to come. Buy one for yourself and get one for your pastor as an indispensable gift to enrich your pastor's pulpit. - Todd Burgett, Christian Book Previews.com
Great Book.......2005-12-09
"The Message of the New Testament" by Mark Dever is outstanding for three reasons. First, God has blessed Mark Dever with some amazing intellectual abilities. Educated at Duke and Cambridge, Dever has a brilliant mind. I've been told, for example, that when he was ten years old, Dever was reading Plato on his own volition - and I have no reason to doubt the truth of this story. Dever distinguishes himself from other gifted theologians, however, by the fact that he communicates his knowledge in a simple, direct and, many times, elegant fashion. Second, Dever sticks closely to the text of the Bible. The goal of this book is clear: To explain to the reader the overall message of the New Testament and the message of each of the books of the Bible. Dever takes the Bible seriously and it shows. Third, Dever strives to put the books into historical context. For instance: Who was Jesus Christ? What claims did he make? Who were his disciples? What was the church in (say) Rome like when Paul wrote a letter to them, and why was Paul writing this particular letter to them? It is exceedingly important to correclty answer basic questions such as these if one wants to know what the text meant to the people who first read it and Dever - who is trained as a historian - does a great job of answering them. Indeed, where I expect this particular skill to really shine is in the companion book - "The Message of the Old Testament".
I would recommend this book to any individual - Christian or non-Christian - who simply wants to understand the message of the Bible better. Indeed, non-Christians who know nothing of the Bible or Christ might find that they love this book even more than Christians. This book will provide you with the overview you need to understand the message of the New Testament as a whole as well as each individual book. I would also recommend this book to Christians who are in small group discussions. The chapters are a good size for busy people, and questions at the end of chapter should facilitate good discussions about the meaning of the Bible and how it applies to our lives today.

One of the best books Ive ever read.......2006-11-11
I met Dr. Jim 5 years ago, and he touched my life. The knowledge this man knows about healing is unbelievable. His methods work wonders....saved me a few times, and this book is unbelievable, I would highly recommend it!!
perhaps you were a little hasty.......2006-06-19
Previous reviewers focused on the weak points in Dr. Chappells carefully researched book. He told the story of his Mother's declining heath to illustrate the role that emotional trauma plays in physical disease.
I myself could not put the book down. Of the many books I have read on natural healing his was among the most accessable and through. Please do not let his writing style interfere with your ability to draw upon these tools for natural healing. He outlines in a clear and simple manner what one needs to do to heal. A delightfully simple procedure. Avail yourself of the pleasures of good health !

As an intelligent individual, with a keen interest in Science, I must sincerely question the credibility of a "scientist" who claims that writing words on a bottle or saying a prayer changes the molecular structure of water. The ONLY thing that can do so is temperature, suggesting that the temperature had changed during the time the before and after photos were taken, and that's not proof of anything. But, there's more.
The photos aren't of *A* molecule. They are of an ice crystal, in it's varying forms, which is a collection of molecules. If he doesn't know what a molecule looks like then how can he be trusted with something as important as health??
But there's more.
As a graphic artist, I can safely say that some choice photos have been also tampered with, either severely magnified or blurred.
Anyway, if you don't believe me you can do the test at home with a cheap microscope and a bottle of water. You'll see what an ice crystal looks like in it's varying stages and that it looks the same no matter what you write on or how you pray over the bottle.
Out of the water bit -
There is a disclaimer stating that he is not speaking of disease, but "dis-ease", which is a lack of ease & harmony. This means he hasn't cured anything, and what's worse, he knows it so well, he puts this on the bottom of EVERY page so anyone who doesn't get better (or worse) can't sue him.
In closing, in the front of the book, he admits that he is a salesperson, and throughout the book he suggests products which I fancy he sells. Looking at his 4 "degrees", only 1 of them are legitimate - and Chiropractic Medicine (a 3 year course) qualifies him neither to diagnose nor treat such serious diseases as Diabetes, Cancer, and the like. He has some good nutrition advice, but that can easily be found through any Nutritionist elsewhere, and that is the *only* thing in this book that may help you feel better, but it would be in spite of, not because of him.
He is the modern day mummy dust salesman to a T.
Can't put the book down.......2006-03-11
My husband purchased this book after watching a TV commercial advertising Dr. Chappell's book. As a nurse, I found his information quite reliable, and resourceful. My husband is a Type 2 diabetic and has been using Dr. Chapell's Glucosulin pills now for 3 weeks with remarkable results. He was recently hospitalized for internal hemorroidal bleedings (not due to these pilLs) and has realized that Dr. Chapell's pills are working for him. A lot of the information in the book, we've been using i.e. cinnamon, colon enema, etc. prior to reading this book. I highly recommend it. I often use this book as a reference material to what types of herbs are best for my ailments.
A total waste of time.......2006-01-27
Much of the first part of the book talks about his mother. He quotes people who according to him talked to god pre-birth, used effective prayer to reshape crystals, thinks the government is conspiring against him, criticizes the main-stream medical community and then uses the main-stream medical community to "prove" his claims, etc. What has any of this to do with curing diabetes ?
When I finally got to the section that deals specifically with diabetes, pages 283 thru 294, 7 ingredients were mentioned with no mention of appropriate dosages, except for chromium picolinate (400 mcg daily).
Do yourself a favor, do not buy this book.
Book Description
The seventh edition of this perennial stalwart of the Kumarian Press list continues the discussion of the "new American hegemony" and the "war on terror" that began with the previous edition. In particular, Isbister addresses changes in international politics and the impact on the global order of the US-led military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. The author also focuses on major initiatives, such as the UN's Millennium Development Goals, to confront the issue of world poverty. As with all editions of this vibrant text, Isbister writes with clarity and passion, not only about failed promises, but about hope, human potential, and the belief that a just and equitable world system is attainable.

Alright for the information..........2007-02-19
but it's just that. So if you're in the market for anything else, look.. well elsewhere. This book just gives a sometimes one-sided view on current politics surrounding captalism, poverty, etc. Interesting only for research purposes.
This is a case where newer is not necessarily better........1999-09-11
Much of the clarity and conciseness that marked the 3rd edition of this work as an excellent introduction to the study of underdevelopment has been lost in the 4th edition. I have used the 3rd edition several times in the past two years as a primary text for a college-level course dealing with Third World culture and politics. This semester, I moved perforce to the 4th edition and have noted that my students (most of whom are having their first exposure to international political economy and who are neither political science nor economics majors) are having far more difficulty in comprehending the theoretical bases for explaining underdevelopment than they have had in the past. In short, the 4th edition is a step backwards and is somewhat disappointing. In my opinion, the 4th edition of this work has replaced an excellent resource with merely a good one.

A compelling true tale of love and devotion as a husband cares for his ill wife. He shares the story of their struggles and the remarkable lessons they have learned together about God's love.
Customer Reviews:
A Promise Kept.......2007-10-13
This is a wonderful testimony to the love and caregiving that the author experienced while administering to his wife.A book that all caregivers can relate to--probably should be a read by the caregiver and not the afflicted. Unfortunately the quality of the binding is not at the same level as it's contents. Both volumes I purchased came apart at the seams and I had to reglue many of the pages.
A Promise Kept.......2005-10-31
A beautiful story of marital faithfulness and love in an age where there is precious little of the same. Only in Jesus can be found this quality of unconditional love. I also recommend McQuilkin's Life in the Spirit book and workbook. He truly knows how to live a life filled with the fruits of the Holy Spirit -- and can teach us how, too!
For those who care for the dying.......2003-06-05
Good book for care givers of the ill. Encouragement to keep on loving in the midst of pain.
Well done - a true example of agape love.......2001-08-09
For a young single it's easy to fantasize about the joys of having a lifelong love - often at the neglect of counting the true cost of actually having one. This small but powerful book shows that cost, and how one man remained faithful to his wife despite it.
Robertson, a distinguished man high in Christian academic circles, is shocked when his vivacious wife Muriel is diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Gradually, she begins to succumb to its ravages and is forced to abandon her popular radio show and speaking engagements. As the disease takes its toll on Muriel, Robertson devotes more and more time to watching over her. He leaves his work and other pursuits to care for her because without his presence, she becomes fearful and agitated. Only with him near is she happy and content. Eventually she becomes totally dependent upon him, unable to perform rudimentary tasks or even converse.
But the heart of the story is that he remains with her gratefully, and with a loving attitude. He is not an angry or resentful caretaker. Of course, he is not thrilled to watch his lovely, intelligent wife slide into helpless dementia. But he sees his caretaking as a holy task, one entrusted to him by God. Indeed, she "took care" of him for decades, so he finds it a priviledge to return the favor. However, he is careful to state that his is not the "ideal" way to care for a severely ailing loved one. But I would say that his attitude and actions are examples for anyone, regardless of whatever caretaking path is chosen.
Elisabeth Elliot once wrote that marriage is the abandonment of self. Robertson lovingly exemplifies that principle in the midst of a heart-breaking situation - all for the glory of God. Highly recommended.
Such a love!.......2001-01-09
My death and dying stage - the cover compelled me! And in this case, you CAN judge this book by its cover (center: an image of a woman smiling from under a large brimmed straw hat, circa 1940s, with a shadowy image of a solitary man walking away in the lower left corner)
Robertson McQuilkin was a college professor at a renowned seminary when his wife was diagnosed with Alzheimers Disease. She had always been the love of his life, and he struggled with the choices that come at the end -
This book is strengthening, uplifting, and encouraging - love is a commitment. This man gives up everything to help his bride, and gains it all back tenfold, through blessings from God. it details the anguish he feels and the deep sad love that carries him through every day.
I saw my grandfather in this all over the place, married 57+ years to my grandmother, and visiting her every day at the nursing home. He loves her. He wishes he could do and be more, but feels helpless.
Such a love! It's FAR BETTER THAN THE TITANIC!!
Wonderful Wedding Gift Material!!

Practical and insightful - a treasure.......2000-04-22
A great book. This book is full of practical ways for wives to honor their husband, themself and God. There is great insight into the differences in the way husbands and wives think, and react to situations in everyday life. Each chapter gives helpful information and direction drawn from real life and scripture. These 12 wives (each of whom write one chapter) of well known Christian men in ministry are real people living real lives and giving us a glimpse into their marriage and home. I first read this book for my own growth and was so impacted by the usefulness of the information the women share, that I have now twice used it as text for a women's study. The format is easy to read and the questions to ponder at the end of each chapter do cause you to look hard into your self, into your marriage relationship and to look hard at what God's plan is and consider if your marriage follows that plan. I recommend this book without hesitation to all married women, those planning to marry. A great gift to a newly-wed.
This book gives encouragement to all wives........1999-07-18
When you read The Joy of a Promise Kept , you learn how to be the best wife you can be. By encourging your husband he in turn encourages you. The role of a wife can be the most rewarding role you play if we all learn what this role is and then live what we learn. My husband and I have noticed our lives better from information provided to us from this book.

Historically Accurate.......2000-07-11
This book is the early history of Little League told by Carl E. Stotz, founder of LL. Full of details about the beginning years, with precise dates and details, as his records show. Many articles written about the beginning years have errors. This book tells it like it truly was.
Historically Invaluable.......2000-05-24
For anybody with a genuine interest (ie. any adult invlolved with the LL program) this is an invaluable lesson in what LL is supposed to be. Carl Stotz tells the story of the first 12 years of LL. The man was passionate about his creation, although not for where it headed as he gradually lost control of the organization. The program ideals are the strength of LL, which Carl fully understood but had trouble getting others to see.
Carl passed away near the completion of the book. Kenneth Loss, a longtime personal friend of Carl's writes well of the last few years of Carl's involvement before leaving out of frustration.
As a dedicated LL coach and umpire, I could imagine how Carl felt in those early years as the program grew and thrived, and most importantly, what it meant to the boys who played.
I would recommend this book to anyone involved with the LL organization, at a minimum to serve as a reminder of what the program is supposed to be and primarily, who it is for.

Gabrielle Schneider is a Holocaust survivor who has collected enough experiences for ten lifetimes. She shares some of them in Andor Kept His Promise from the Grave, giving us the opportunity to see pre-war Europe, World War II, and post-war America through the eyes of someone who was there. Even more vivid are her paintings, displayed at the end of the book, which depict despair, inhumanity, hope, memories, and the beauty of everyday life.

1st OFF Amazon's brief description is for the wrong book!!!!.......2002-07-06
TRUE DESCRIPTION OF BOOK: A DISTANT PAST; Kristine Gavin was depressed about turning thirty until she received a most unusual gift from her brother. It was a portrait he'd found in the attic of their family home in Virginia, a portrait of a woman who must have been their ancestor; judging from Kris' resemblance to the beauty. But it wasn't the painting that intrigued Kris....And old newspaper clipping about the woman's strange disappearance caught within the frame drew her in. Just as Kris was uncovering a fascinating secret from the past she sensed a change in the air-and found herself thrown back in time into a strange room, staring into the eyes of the sexiest man she had ever seen!
AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE; Sean O'Mara froze when he saw his wife Christia standing before him. She had vanished and the news had written about in all of the papers-he had been charged with her murder!
MY REVIEW: I liked it... it started out to be very interesting and continued for the most part to carry it's worth. I realized that this book was one of THE 1st Time Travel books that were written and I read it as such. If you have the opportunity to get your hands on this one please do, it doesn't have a lot of humor but Kris is smart and makes the most of her situation (you'll understand this comment better once you read the book) What I didn't like was the time spent in his time is so short.... I would have rather had her time there be longer and not so much time spent in present day. Overall a good read I don't know if I would consider it a "keeper" though.
Good but isn't a keeper!.......2002-01-04
I liked this audio cassette recording of Constance O'Day Flannery's Time-Kept Promises and I liked the story about the modern day lady named Kris Gavin being transprted back in time and meeting Sean O'Mara and Sean thinking that Kris is his missing lookalike wife who apparently is not a nice person so that would explain why Sean is so rude to Kris and why he is so shocked that the person he thinks is his cold hearted wife is so much nicer and you can understand his being cynical. Though I liked this story I didn't think it was a keeper.
the kind of romance all women love!.......1998-05-13
The book was thrilling. It was a real page turner. I read it over five years ago and I still remember it. I've been looking fort it for years because it's such a thrilling book. And it ends quite nicely.
