The crowning achievement of Jimmy Carter's presidency was the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, and he has continued his public and private diplomacy ever since, winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his decades of work for peace, human rights, and international development. It's a rare honor to ask questions of a former president, and we are grateful that President Carter was able to take the time in between his work with his wife, Rosalynn, for the Carter Center and Habitat for Humanity and his many writing projects to speak with us about his hopes for the region and his thoughts on the book.

An Interview with President Jimmy Carter
Q: What has been the importance of your own faith in your continued interest in peace in the Middle East?
A: As a Christian, I worship the Prince of Peace. One of my preeminent commitments has been to bring peace to the people who live in the Holy Land. I made my best efforts as president and still have this as a high priority.
Q: A common theme in your years of Middle East diplomacy has been that leaders on both sides have often been more open to discussion and change in private than in public. Do you think that's still the case?
A: Yes. This is why private and intense negotiations can be successful. More accurately, however, my premise has been that the general public (Jewish, Christian, and Muslim) are more eager for peace than their political leaders. For instance, a recent poll done by the Hebrew University in Jerusalem showed that 58% of Israelis and 81% of the Palestinians favor a comprehensive settlement similar to the Roadmap for Peace or the Saudi proposal adopted by all 23 Arab nations and recently promoted by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Tragically, there have been no substantive peace talks during the past six years.
Q: How have the war in Iraq and the increased strength of Iran (and the declarations of their leaders against Israel) changed the conditions of the Israel-Palestine question?
A: Other existing or threatened conflicts in the region greatly increase the importance of Israel's having peace agreements with its neighbors, to minimize overall Arab animosity toward both Israel and the United States and reduce the threat of a broader conflict.
Q: Your use of the term "apartheid" has been a lightning rod in the response to your book. Could you explain your choice? Were you surprised by the reaction?
A: The book is about Palestine, the occupied territories, and not about Israel. Forced segregation in the West Bank and terrible oppression of the Palestinians create a situation accurately described by the word. I made it plain in the text that this abuse is not based on racism, but on the desire of a minority of Israelis to confiscate and colonize Palestinian land. This violates the basic humanitarian premises on which the nation of Israel was founded. My surprise is that most critics of the book have ignored the facts about Palestinian persecution and its proposals for future peace and resorted to personal attacks on the author. No one could visit the occupied territories and deny that the book is accurate.
Q: You write in the book that "the peace process does not have a life of its own; it is not self-sustaining." What would you recommend that the next American president do to revive it?
A: I would not want to wait two more years. It is encouraging that President George W. Bush has announced that peace in the Holy Land will be a high priority for his administration during the next two years. On her January trip to the region, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has called for early U.S.-Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. She has recommended the 2002 offer of the Arab nations as a foundation for peace: full recognition of Israel based on a return to its internationally recognized borders. This offer is compatible with official U.S. Government policy, previous agreements approved by Israeli governments in 1978 and 1993, and with the International Quartet's "roadmap for peace." My book proposes that, through negotiated land swaps, this "green line" border be modified to permit a substantial number of Israelis settlers to remain in Palestine. With strong U.S. pressure, backed by the U.N., Russia, and the European Community, Israelis and Palestinians would have to come to the negotiating table.

The term "good-faith" is almost inappropriate when applied to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a bloody struggle interrupted every so often by negotiations that turn out to be anything but honest. Nonetheless, thirty years after his first trip to the Mideast, former President Jimmy Carter still has hope for a peaceful, comprehensive solution to the region's troubles, delivering this informed and readable chronicle as an offering to the cause. An insistent man of peace.......2007-10-22
Dialog is important, but how dialog is carried on is also. President Carter was right to turn down lawyer Alan Dershowitz's challenge to battle over this book. His is the simple, clear, unblinking style of a spiritual leader, not a crusader. All classes and viewpoints can learn from "Palestine Peace not Apartheid," but we must be willing to listen from the heart.
Jimmy, President Carter, has proven by his life that he is dedicated not to "winning" but to building bridges. He is not primarily trying to place blame in this book. It is both the story of his own journey to build bridges and a quick easy-to-read review of the history and of where we are now. I couldn't believe how short UN resolutions 242 and 338 are! Carter makes knowing the basics of a complicated history easy. He cuts to the chase.
Carter has dedicated his life to being a man of peace. He is fair and balanced. I believe the reason he may appear otherwise is because some people place too high a value on fear. Fear of what might happen in the future easily justifies all evil behavior in the present. And also, Carter is a threat to power. He is brave enough to speak truth to power: not piles of truth to humiliate and destroy, but just enough truth to push insistently toward the goal.
Though he may not understand every nuance that "pleases" either side (I found it ironic that he didn't know how to say "I'm sorry" in Arabic after all those years), the bottomline? Carter's an honest broker. Those who harden themselves against him are suicidal.
Still presenting himself as a humble peanut farmer and simple Christian, nevertheless Jimmy demands that the highest powers listen. Will they? Or will they only defend, attack, and dismiss?
The vast majority of Americans and people around the world feel and experience what is going on in occupied Palestine as unjust, at the least inflexible, and lacking in the will for peace. The onus--without Carter having to say it--just by telling the story, does fall more heavily on Israel. It is their occupation. They are in control of the destiny of the people they have conquered.
Ultimately, regardless of all the justifying arguments against President Carter even broaching an "impolite" topic, his story, without drama, leaves us with the facts on the ground in Palestine. My thoughts: Probably no one anywhere in the world would want to trade places with a Palestinian living in Palestine. Who would tolerate such a humiliating hellish existence for so many decades? Why would Israel want to continue such a soul-destroying occupation?
Why don't the Palestinians just disappear? Deep down inside we all are ultimately glad they will not be chased out, will not be walled over, will not be bulldozed away. If they gave up when they were wronged this would say something about the human spirit. It would say some people don't count, not really. People without money, and lawyers, and armies, and degrees, and books documenting their every experience...they just are not as important. The survival of the fittest is not an adequate answer for the human spirit.
What is the worst thing that could happen if the status quo passivity about power were challenged? What if we imagined, believed, and worked to make sure Israel and Palestine live side by side as equals? Imagining the worst case scenarios as we did with Iraq seems to make the worst things come true. So let's try the opposite instead?
The occupation of Palestine is like South Africa was under apartheid. "Apartheid" is a word of hope! The world protested and boycotted, and said "We will not tolerate this anymore!" and the unimaginable happened. And now everyone in South Africa is glad we did, of course with a little help from them. The place is no longer a powder keg. Yes, this can happen. Perhaps in a different way, but it probably won't happen if we just leave things alone.

It is a courageous act to call it like is, but Mr. Carter should've also admitted guilt by stating that he was instrumental in brutal treatment of Palestinians.

Having lived and worked in the Middle East, and having witnessed first hand the misinformation about events, I was plesantly surprised to read a book that was factual and openly placed the blame for the intransigence for peace squarely where it belongs.
Mr. Carter has become an authority on the subject and has no reason to fabricate anything since he has achieved all the fame and accolades he could ever want. He is thus in a unique position to tell it like it. Intimidation on this subject is still strong and therefore Mr. Carter is to be lauded for this informative book.
In my opinion it is a must read for anyone who wants to know why we have been in a stagmire for decades and what it will take to get out of it.

Jimmy Carter is a great humanitarian, Christian and scholar, but I was so disappointed in several of his statements in this book. I am a liberal Christian like Carter, but one who knows that what is going on between Palestine and Israel is not in the least like Apartheid in South Africa. I can only continue to pray that at some point Palestine's leaders will begin to truly negotiate for peace. Palestinian extremists are doing their own people a grave disservice.

He doesn't much like what he sees. Though much of the data Carter presents to support his arguments is familiar, it's worth repeating that "the rate of firearm homicides in the United States is nineteen times higher than that of 35 other high-income countries combined." That "In addition to imprisonment, the United States of America stands almost alone in the world in our fascination with the death penalty, and our few remaining companions are regimes with a lack of respect for basic human rights." That when it comes to sharing the wealth with poor nations "Americans are the stingiest of all industrialized nations. We allow about one-thirtieth as much as is commonly believed [or] sixteen cents out of each $100 of the gross national income." America: land of the free, home of the brave? Try global bully with a bad attitude and reckless sense of entitlement.
Carter spends significant time contextualizing his own spirituality, as if to underscore the urgency of his message that fundamentalism in any form is bad, especially when it encroaches on government. Indeed, Carter persuasively links fundamentalism to harmful policy, the subjugation of women, general xenophobia, and a host of other ills occurring all around him. And while George W. This book is warning against fundamentalism and the in-human lack of compassion that seems so deeply rooted in the American sub-culture that holds sway over Bush's White House. Are you a Christian who is concerned about poverty? The USA's policy of pre-emptive war? Gleeful disregard for nuclear proliferation? Torture? The environment? Carter lays out a passionate case that those concerns are in line with Christian values. Carter does not cede the definition of `Christian' to the pro war, pro death penalty, pro torture, anti ecumenical crowd who insist that they alone can articulate what it means to be a Christian. This is a courageous book by a very thoughtful man

Great book. It is terribly refreshing to read a book that treats logic and common sense as important values in our personal, public, and political lives. Shows very clearly that religious views and opinions can be separated from the political arena simply by deciding to do so. The parts dealing with the politics of dealing with the rest of the world are especially good. The world would be a far better place if we could just follow the live and let live philosophy.

I'm an absolute fan of President Carter on a multitude of levels - and this book further supports my endearment of him. He accurate and thoughtfully discusses the crises occuring in the U.S. - particularly because of the current administration and educationally analyzes how to solve/correct these problems. He is my hero...
(P.S. for anyone with any doubts as to Carter's greatness, they need to read some history and see his Presidential Library to gain some insight as to what he actually did and accomplished while President for both the U.S. and the world as a whole.)
A moral challenge to Americans.......2007-06-27
In this book, Nobelist and former President Jimmy Carter asserts that Christian fundamentalists have taken control of the American government. Although he is a devout Christian himself, he outlines charges against fundamentalists and neoconservatives that reiterate many oft-aired criticisms of the current administration. He also decries fundamentalist control of the Southern Baptist denomination, which may be of less interest to business readers. However, one need not agree with Carter to be drawn by his political philosophy and sincerity, nor disagree to be bruised by his self-righteous tone. This is more sermon than essay, for it has a pronounced religious focus, but we find that it provides a heartfelt portrait of the value judgments of a historic figure who never hesitated to provoke debate. Readers seeking a liberal focus on issues about which conservatives and liberals disagree will find this to be a passionate touchstone, as will those alarmed by what they perceive as manifestations of fundamentalism in U.S. public policy.

Good lessons even for the non-religious.......2007-05-13
First I have to admit to being a Democrat and a fan of Jimmy Carter's public life after the Presidency, using his name recognition to fund public health initiatives in third world countries. However, I can't claim to be of a particulary religious bent. These lessons are very informal, recorded in Jimmy Carter's home church in 1998 and the sound quality isn't great--when someone in the audience speaks it's very hard to hear. But in the informality and simplicity lies its charm. Jimmy opens each lesson by telling what he and Rosalind have done in the preceding week, asking what other dominations or states/countries are represented in the guests who have come to listen to his lesson, and then asks for a prayer from someone in the audience before he begins. The lessons are from letters that Paul wrote and JImmy presents the message, often by asking questions of those present, in an unadorned, sincere way. This is not a smooth, professional delivery nor a pulpit-thumping evangelistic sermon. It is, as the title suggests, a country church Sunday school lesson but, whether you are religious or not, the principles presented are universal, the topics germaine to everyday life, and the goodness that comes through genuine. I don't see how anyone could listen to this set and not feel better at the end.

The president has been teaching Sunday School since his Naval Academy days and his grasp and scope of the subject matter discussed is impressive. He invites questions and participation from the audience (congregation/class?) and the sessions are spirited and informative. His talent for taking current secular issues and relating them to specific areas of the scriptures is invaluable with surprising conclusions in some cases. Not afraid of tough problems or questions he plows through each lesson with charm, focus and an easy charisma.

At last, a book about Jimmy Carter that isn't self-written and self-serving. This should be required reading for the many people who believe Jimmy Carter is a harmless do-gooder.
What a legacy! So many of the problems we face today, both real (terrorism), and imagined (global warming), we owe to his abysmal presidency. As if that wasn't more than enough, he gifted us with Chris Matthews!
I have often wondered how one who failed so completely during his term in office has the audacity to meddle in current affairs, to the continuing detriment of his own country, not to mention Israel. Jimmy should have left office with his tail tucked firmly between his legs and his mouth shut, allowing a better man to handle the job. This book exposes the colossal ego that would not allow him to do that.
Worth reading by anyone willing to learn about a difficult time in our recent history, especially in an election year. This is a handbook on how not to pick a president.

How to enjoy being an old kokker .......2006-04-04
Simple, plain, clear good advice enlived by personal example and story. This is a good book about aging wisely, retaining one's powers as best as one can through the senior years. Former President Carter involuntarily forced to retire at fifty- six faced a double - crisis , identity and financial. He almost lost the family land and farm, but was saved when his peanut holdings were bought by a large consortium. He and his wife Rosalyn became active in new ways, as university teachers, writers, volunteer builders of one home for a needy person each year.
The Carter recipe for enjoying old age involves remaining active, continuing to interact with others, exercising, avoiding the well- known evils of cigarettes and excess drinking.
Carter recognizes that not everyone has the prerogatives of a former President but he maintains that most of us have the resources to go on enjoying life in old age.
It seems to me Carter is a lot wiser in this work than he is in many of his political writings.
This is a good book and has valuable tips which should help towards graceful aging.

In THE VIRTUES OF AGING, President Jimmy Carter writes about what a senior citizen can do to feel fulfilled and productive in ones last stage of life. As usual, he is quite candid as he writes about his own life, his marriage to Rosalyn, and recounts stories about his family and friends. I always enjoy reading Carter's non-fiction, as he always has some interesting anecdotes, as well as some wisdom-filled stories that he passes on to his readers. Carter never preaches, and I for one appreciate it. In fact, in this particular book he admits (at the end) that he tried to refrain from quoting much from the bible, as he felt it would detract from the topic. But since the church is a big part of his life, he did talk about his own participation with his church and did quote a few times in appropriate places as he discussed issues on aging.
I have to admit I'm rather biased because I have always admired the work Jimmy Carter has done since his presidency. Knowing about the good works he's done in the past few decades, I do not find it difficult at all to see that he's also left his mark in his writings. He's shared with the world what he has learned through his own past experiences as a son, a father, and grandfather, as well as Governor and President of the United States. I'm slowly collecting all of his books and so far have enjoyed what I have read. THE VIRTUES OF AGING was not as structured as some of his other books have been, but I don't think it was meant to be. It is a collection of thoughts and ramblings of aging gracefully, from his point of view.

Jimmy Carter used to be my favorite ex-president. Now, it seems he has aged beyond the point at which he can reason clearly. He goes on Larry King to criticize a former colleague (Zell Miller) for standing in support of the President, AND writes a book, for which he will probably make millions of dollars, to do more of the same. He is using his roles as elder statesman (well-deserved) and Nobel Laureate (well-deserved) to undermine our country; but seems to have forgotten that he was impotent while our hostages were held in Iran for 444 days. You know the saying: "them what can't do, teach". If one of the virtues of aging is exploitation of public opinion for your own advantage (or that of your party), Jimmy Carter is VERY virtuous.
Fabulous Book!!.......2004-05-13
I'm in my mid-40's and found this book a facinating
look at older age. Carter busts the old stereotypes
about sitting in the rocking chair during retirement age and mentions numerous examples of friends and associates in the 70's and 80's who are living enormously productive lives. This book
gives me hope for the future. Even though my last 45 years were probably a little easier than my next 45 will, I find solace in the many examples of warm relationships maintained, hobbies developed and new challenges in later life. A whole-hearted endorsement for this book.
Carter is my favorite former US President.
The book also gave me a great curiousity to look at more information on the Carter Center and Habitat for Humanity.

Thoughtfully written, this is one of those books to keep on the night stand and read one chapter a night and meditate upon the lesson set forth in the chapter. Highly recommend.
Wise words from a great Christian man.......2004-12-29
This is a great devotional that draws on a wide range of scripture and also on President Carter's long, interesting, diverse, and meaningful life. Not only is Carter a good exegete of scripture, but his genuine faith comes through in every page. He writes in a very personal style that makes you feel like you're studying the scriptures with a favorite uncle...who happened to be the leader of the free world some years back.
The book is divided into 52 short sermonettes, I suppose so you can read one a week for a year (though you will almost certainly want to read it faster than that). These sections are further subdivided into 9 sections: The Word Became Flesh, His Healing Touch, Who is my Neighbor?, What We Believe, Christians in the World, To Know and Worship, God's Riches at Christ's Expense, When the Road is Rough, and God's Call. The messages are broad enough that you can likely find a word of hope or encouragement or challenge somewhere in here, depending on what it is that you need to hear.
The meditations are intellectually stimulating, yet simple enough that I have used some of them as reading for my youth group.
In his life, Jimmy Carter has shown what is means to live out your faith. In this book, he reflects on what that can look like for us.
Beautiful, sensational, clear and to the point.......2004-08-16
This is the very first book I read of Carter. I never expected that an ex-president, supposed to be pragmatic and rational, can have written such a beautiful, sensational, clear and to the point spiritual book. Not a few messages, but fifty-two meaningful and insightful ones in this 241 page book. The format is traditional, with three to four pages of elaboration on a particular biblical verse. Nevertheless, the impact is great and you really feel your faith and spiritual strength being enhanced through reading it, of course with intermittent prayers in between for optimal effect. I dont want to comment it as a tool book, but it does serves its purpose really well.
In short, a great read not to be missed! It's the best and the least difficult spiritual book I had read in months, after the intense round of five to six Philip Yancey books I read about half a year before, which I still deem them the very best amongst all christian books.

Pg 74: The context for Jesus's stories about the Samaritans, ...For Samaritan, substitute black, Muslim, AIDS, Haitian - or perhaps roll them all into one! ... His acknowledging the gratitude of the healed leper and using a Samaritan's actions as epitomizing the Golden Rule are powerful lessons against prejudice.
Pg 112: We argue incessantly about separation of church and state, the priesthood of believers, ordination of women, prayer in schools, gay rights, predestination ... and any number of other "crucial" issues. Perhaps worse than the Corinthians, we forget the solid, unquestionable, unifying foundation of our faith in in the gentle Jesus, full of grace and truth. As Cecil Sherman has said, "Too many churches are majoring in the minors."

I cannot express in words how important this book is to me. I started reading it during a very difficult time in my life and it really helped me. Many people look for spiritual guidance, but let's face it, the bible can be a difficult read. Jimmy Carter takes passages from the bible and explains what he thinks they mean. However, Carter does it in a very loving and objective way. Mr. Carter speaks of the compassionate and forgiving Christ. There is no finger pointing and moralizing here. Mr. Carter simply tries to relay what God's message is and how me might live it. Although I am not a Baptist like Jimmy Carter, I really felt in tune with what he had to say. If the bible by itself has not helped you to understand God's greater message, maybe this book will.
I Highly Reccomend Sources of Strength.......2002-04-25
I gained a respect for Jimmy Carter that until now was only a fair assessment of the man. I know he wrote this with the intention of being a once a week reading, but I have just about finished it in just under two weeks with intentions to reread it many many more times. His style of writing has left me with the desire to read many more of his works. One cannot help but to find ones faith taken to a higher level after reading his Bible Teachings.

Good for novices to foster care system.......2005-10-19
The interworkings of social services and esp. that of foster care are complex and take much to understand. On Their Own is written at a basic level so the general public can understand what is going on. I have been a mentor and advocate for foster children for a year now and found the book helpful and inspiring. The back part of the book has detailed information on what can be done to help this problem. Some of the kids I mentor will soon be turning 18 and this has allowed me some insight on what to do.
The book is amazing for someone who doesn't understand the foster care system. Even though I work with foster kids and understand some of the interworkings, it allowed me better understanding. I had my mom read the book as well. The forward by Jimmy Carter is amazing as well. Good read if you enjoy learning about social issues.

What happens when Social Services fail you? And even though you've turned eighteen, or so it says on your birth certificate, you're still not ready for adulthood? Children in foster care face this dilemma daily, for as soon as they're 18, they're dumped from wherever it is that was paying for them to stay. The Williams brothers, three small boys, grew up tough, and in their different ways, Jermaine, Lamar and Jeffrey all tried to cope with a foster system that alternately coddled them and abused them. I was moved to tears by reading the account of Jermaine's last days on earth, simply written by ace reporter Martha Shirk. Happily, the other members of Jermaine's family are living still. Then there's Giselle, a promising young girl who unfortunately becomes prey to anorexia. All too soon, adulthood is upon her, while she's still struggling with a common problem of teenage girls. Liberals worry about these issues, while those of a more conservative bent argue that 18 is certainly old enough to expect a young man or woman to get out on his own and stop depending on charity or handouts. But Shirk and her co-author Stabgler admit there are no easy answers.
Anyone can read this book and identify with the ideas behind it, for in one way or another we are all affected by the problems of aging and by being forced by old Father Time into a realm we are really not prepared for. For these young people, it was turning 18. For some of us, it might be turning thirty. And for baby boomers, it will be the call of the retirement trumpet when, once so active, people born in the 1940s and 1950s will be put on the shelf in today's changing world, without sufficient preparation on how to live in that place of old age. Jimmy Carter contirbutes an elegant foreword that shows he has really thought about the problems of youth. That's the saddest story of all.

A Profound and Inspirational Book.......2007-04-05
Mattie J. T. Stepanek's book is one of the most profound and inspirational books I have ever read. I don't know if any of you had the privilege of encountering young Mattie on his numerous television appearances on Oprah, Good Morning America, Larry King, or the Jerry Lewis M.D. telethon, but if you did, or did not, I invite you to read this book by this best-selling young poet, peacemaker and philosopher. Mattie J.T. Stepanek died in June, 2004, weeks before his 14th birthday. I have all his previous poetry books, but this book goes far beyond his poetry, with brilliant essays, and email correspondence with his hero, President Jimmy Carter. His essays are incredible, filled with wisdom and insights that hardly seem possible coming from such a young mind.
Mattie wrote these words: "I believe that I am here to reach out and touch the world gently with my thoughts and my experiences, and with my observations and my reactions, to help people more fully appreciate and respect all aspects of life. I believe that I am here, even if only for a few handful of years, to help people consider the important matter of future, during our lifetime, and for eternity."
His essays are profound and I find I cannot even put into words the value of his work, except to say it has to be shared. You may think, oh, this is a kid, what can he know. Trust me, his writing is beautiful, his philosophy profound, insightful, and filled with a wisdom far, far, beyond his age. Never have I and never will I ever be so inspired by anyone in the same way I have been inspired by Mattie J. T. Stepanek. In reading this book, one has to believe in love, happiness and peace. This child and his mother have been through so much heartache and pain. It's just amazing to me how two people with so much pain can inspire the world. They truly are a gift from God. If you haven't read this book, or any of Mattie's other books, then you are really missing out!

A Beautiful Book!.......2006-07-04
When I first heard about Mattie, it was about five years ago and I guess I didn't really pay too much attention. But I had heard and read enough of his poetry that by the time he passed away my heart was broken. I wished I had payed more attention to what he was doing while he was alive. This book really helped me to fill in the gaps. It is full of his poetry and essays, as well as a history of his life as seen through his email correspondance with Jimmy Carter. I was in tears every time I picked up this book. So I have no problem in giving it the highest rating possable.
HONEST AND LIFE-CHANGING.......2006-06-14
This book is inspired by a boy who endured more pain than is almost conceivable and yet, Mattie Stepanek rises like the Phoenix from the ashes of his own suffering to genuinely challenge and gently encourage his readers towards the goals of "Thinking gently, speaking gently, and Living gently."
Just Peace, published almost 2 years after Mattie's passing, is co-authored by former US President, Jimmy Carter. They were close friends and comrads-in-arms in the field of Diplomacy and Peace.
Just Peace is a wonderful account of a former US President and his wife, who became fast and close friends to a boy who was in the slow process of dying since his birth. Unlike Mattie's books of poetry, this book is mostly prose, photos, and email posts from Mattie to Pres. Carter and vice, veersa. Jimmy Carter was Mattie's no. 1 Peace-maker Hero. Equally, Pres. Carter said that Mattie was the greatest person, whom he had ever personally met in his entire life.
Read this book and discover WHY. Jimmy Carter's words are not empty, and the depth and insight of Mattie Stepanek is still changing lives, even as I write this review. Mattie forever changed me to be a gentler, more-caring, and focused person.
For all readers with hearts desirous for giving, ministering, and loving, EVER so gently, and lovingly, this is your book!
Mattie's poems speak the same message and will warm your hearts and may even cause you to cry wistful tears, for Mattie, with good cause, is justifiably missed! He's my hero too.

Mixed Feelings..........2003-10-18
For those who are interested in MidEast affairs (as myself) this covers a fascinating topic and is written in a fluid style, which adds up to a truly gripping read.
The only reason for which I am not awarding this book 5 stars (and were it possible 6 or 7 stars) is the fact that many of the claims are indeed extreme...
Too much of the book simply adds up to bill this as complete fiction. Several other books (amongst which "The Samson Option", written by a renown journalist) have been based on Ben-Menashe's knowledge. Investigations have sprung up in the US and in Australia. Of course, these haven't lead far, but this is a serious case of the poeple in power charged with investigating the people in power - so what would you really expect?
Whilst I was reading this book I kept my copy of "Israels Secret Wars" at hand to verify events, facts and dates, and together with a bit of searching around the net, the essence of it all seems to add up.
Right from the start the author makes his embitterment with the "system" clear, so accusing him of having an axe to grind is pretty lame - add to that the fact that amongst his sworn enemies (at the end) was the media mogul R. Maxwell (who unleashed the full weight of his media empire to destroy his credibility) and you end up without much of a case...

Better Spy Fiction Than Ian Fleming.......2002-12-13
After reading this book I didn't know how to react to much of it. Many of the claims are plausible, many are wildly implausible, and some of the information is just plain factually wrong. Sharon left the IDF in 1973, not 1970 as Menashe says. Shamir retired or "was retired from" the Mossad in 1965 not the "early 1970s." Ben-Menashe is the first person who claims that the IAF has B-52s--two squadrons no less--but he doesn't say where Israel hides these massive eight-engine bombers. He also claimed that the murder of an old American Jewish cripple by Abul Abbas' organization on the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro was an Israeli plot to discredit the PLO. Ben-Menashe doesn't really document any of his claims but asks us just to trust him. His first whopper is to claim that Shimon Peres had been paid millions by Lockheed while defense minister. Since all of Israel's American fighters were built by McDonnel Douglas or General Dynamics this seems highly unlikely. Israel does use the Lockheed C-130, but the Lockheed scandal in Europe at the same time was to get the Belgians, Dutch, and Italians to purchase F-104 Starfighter interceptors. This is typical of Ben-Menashe--he seems to take bits of news and spin it into a plot like a Hollywood screenwriter.

An excellent well documented book by a high level Israeli agent. I have to give Sheridan Square Press's publishers Ellen Ray & Bill the Credit for the content as the author did the same. Most of us out of the publishing, or, media business are not skilled writers. Sheridian Square Press out of N.Y., N.Y. did the same service for the deceased Jim Garrison in his book "On the Trails of Assassins" documenting events leading up to the events of the Kennedy asassination that Oliver Stone made a movie of.

This was a fantastic read. If you really want to know about the workings of world intelligence agencies from the inside, how they manipulate other countries, people, events then you must read this book. Better than a James Bond novel!
As you read further and further into the book you become more and more entangled in the world of espionage and paranoia. Gripping to the end.
