Book Description
Acclaimed as the definitive illustrated history of Abraham Lincoln's assassination, Lincoln's Assassins, by James L. Swanson and Daniel R. Weinberg, follows the shocking events from the tragic scene at Ford's Theatre to the trial and execution of Booth's co-conspirators. For twelve days after the president was shot, the nation waited breathlessly as manhunters tracked down John Wilkes Booth—the story that was brilliantly told in Swanson's New York Times bestseller, Manhunt. Then, during the spring and summer of 1865, a military commission tried eight people as conspirators in Booth's plot to murder Lincoln and other high officials, including the secretary of state and vice president. Few remember them today, but once the names Mary Surratt, Lewis Powell, David Herold, George Atzerodt, Edman Spangler, Samuel Arnold, Michael O'Laughlin, and Dr. Samuel Mudd were the most reviled and notorious in America.
In Lincoln's Assassins, Swanson and Weinberg resurrect these events by presenting an unprecedented visual record of almost 300 contemporary photographs, letters, documents, prints, woodcuts, newspapers, pamphlets, books, and artifacts, many hitherto unpublished. These rare materials, which took the authors decades to collect, evoke the popular culture of the time, record the origins of the Lincoln myth, take the reader into the courtroom and the cells of the accused, document the beginning of American photojournalism, and memorialize the fates of the eight conspirators.
Lincoln's Assassins is a unique work that will appeal to anyone interested in American history, Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, law, crime, assassination, nineteenth-century photographic portraiture, and the history of American photojournalism.

reads like a movie.......2007-10-12
This is an EXCELLENY book. The pace reads like a movie. The characters are expertly depicted and the author presents a flow of events that kept me reading continuosly. The sparse use of photos bothered me at first but then I realized that I liked it better not to have too many images.
Certainly worthwhile........2007-06-29
Although I detest Mr. Swanson's attitude toward the assassination & "scholarship", I am very pleased with my copy of this book. It has a great deal of fine photographs, and makes a very enjoyable purchase for that reason only. Unfortunately, the authors titled the book very oddly -- as those who went on trial were not Lincoln's assassins, and some of them were not even privy to the plan at all, and equally unfortunately, the actual assassin is given only 2 or 3 photographs out of the many included. There was also an sickening decision made when there are pages and pages of essentially identical photos of the hanging, which are not only revolting but very repetative, and could have been greatly reduced to make room for more interesting & varied photographs. That aside, I found the painting by Lew Wallace, given an honorary spot in the front of the book, to be perhaps my favorite assassination-related picture to date. I am very grateful for this book.
P.S. Reprinting the cover to look more like Manhunt? Bad idea. The 1st edition was so much prettier.
Don't miss Manhunt! .......2007-06-27
This is an incredible hour by hour account of the death of President Abraham Lincoln and the search for his killer, John Wilkes Booth. Swanson includes historical accounts taken from the achieves, various testimonies from the people who lived this horrific event along with many other resources. There is a lot about this terrible time in our history that I didn't know, and James Swanson has numerous notes that can take you easily into even deeper research. It completely held my attention on every page of the book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and had a difficult time putting it down. There is so much information I plan to read it again. His 2nd book, Lincoln's Assassins, is a great follow up to this book. If you love history, Manhunt is a must!
Worth It Just For The Photos.......2007-06-26
This is a wonderful addition to the book collection of any reader of Lincoln or civil war history. I have studied the story of the Lincoln conspirators for nearly 20 years, and have read a lot of fine material on the subject, but this book contains amazing photos I did not know existed. Where one may have seen a single picture of the conspirators or their July 1865 hanging.......this book contains pages and pages of photos of them, taken shortly before their execution, often from the original glass negatives. Of course, it also contains a vivid narrative of their trial and last moments. Others have written superb accounts of these events. This book is "worth it just for the photos."
An excellent book.......2007-03-26
In this fascinating book, an accomplished author teams up with an avid Lincoln-ologist to produce an excellent work. This book has a fascinating account of the capture, trial and (in some cases) execution of John Wilkes Booth's fellow "conspirators," and an excellent collection of pictures and reproductions of important documents.
Overall, I found this to be an excellent book. It has just enough text to be highly informative on the conspirators, without getting bogged down in minutiae. Also, it keeps a level-headed approach to the assassination throughout, eschewing the kind of theorizing that marks too many books on the subject. Yep, I highly enjoyed this colorful and highly readable book, and give it my highest recommendations!
Book Description
An elated, victorious Truman brandishes a newspaper with the headline "Dewey Defeats Truman." Theodore Roosevelt galvanizes the crowd with a fiery stump speech. Richard Nixon wipes away sweat during his debate with a poised JFK. Against the backdrop of a towering flag, Reagan captivates crowds with his promise of a stronger, prouder America. Bill Clinton weaves a spell with his saxophone. Throughout American history, few events have commanded the undivided attention of the public the way presidential campaigns have. Now the enduring moments of inspiration, the humiliating gaffes, and the heartbreaking losses of these campaigns are captured in a historic collection of photographs from America's greatest photojournalists.
From the divisive election of Abraham Lincoln to the opening salvos of the 2004 campaign, America's presidents -- and pretenders to the office -- come to life in these pages. These men embody not only the drama of their times, but also the great arc of American history. They are captured here in pivotal and telling campaign moments: on the stage and behind the scenes, on whistle-stop tours, at high-voltage conventions, and in head-to-head debates. Accompanied by political adviser Douglas E. Schoen's trenchant essays, the striking photographs in
On the Campaign Trail offer a unique view of the moments that have united and divided us during the race for the presidency. A fascinating journey in words and images, this landmark collection brings home the drama, fanfare, and power of America's great national contest.

A great compilation of campaigns..........2007-01-02
Wow, this book provides a great walk through American campaigns, both past and very recent. The campaign posters that are included are suburb -- some of the best available -- and the author does a nice job with the analysis portions of the book.
Great Political History..Visually Dynamic.......2004-07-12
A visually very interesting look at American Presidential campaigns..particularly timely now..much of what appears is new..at least to me..great addition to the line up of campaign books that always seems to come out at this point in the electoral cycle.

The Paris Years of Thomas Jefferson
ASIN: 1556708920 |
Book Description
In the early spring of 1787, Thomas Jefferson embarked on a three-month journey to the South of France visiting Arles, Aix-en-Provence, the Canal du Midi, and many other places. He kept extensive notes and wrote, as was usual for him, many letters every day.
Jefferson's journey is now recreated in this stunning new book by Roy and Alma Moore, who have taken the same trip more than a dozen times. Each time they photographed (without cars, people, or signs) the same images Jefferson viewed some 200 years ago. Complementing the full-color photographs are period engravings, portraits, maps, paintings, excerpts from Jefferson's notes, and dozens of letters he wrote along the route to his daughters, his friends in America and Paris, his protg, William Short, and many others.
Combining a rich historical heritage with an armchair traveler's appreciation for one of the most beautiful places on earth, Thomas Jefferson's Journey to the South of France is an enlightening look at the past and a true inspiration for anyone traveling to France today.
Book Description
America's endless fascination with Camelot has enshrined countess pictures of Jack and Jackie Kennedy, Caroline and John-John in our national iconography, but few books have focused on their instinctive grasp of the media's visual magic. Now, in a volume that combines arresting photography and perceptive analysis, Camelot insiders and media experts tell the whole story of the "love affair" between the Kennedys and the cameraa far more complex and sophisticated relationship than we often suppose.
The Kennedy Mystique looks behind and beyond what first meets the eye, reminding readers that JFK and Jackie recognized and used the media's power, and encouraged photographers to capture private moments as well as public events. Unique commentaries from Kennedy intimates and observers like Letitia Baldridge, Hugh Sidey and Robert Dallek provide rare perspective on the photographs as historical records, as image-management, and as symbols. Readers learn, for instance, that the heartwarming shots of Jack laughing with John one Halloween were spontaneous, but the famous "candids" of Jack and Jackie putting the children to bed were staged.
The Kennedy Mystique puts the carefully crafted vision of Camelot in context of early-'60s culture and history to show how JFK and Jackie turned photography, celebrity, and media savvy into a potent political tooland left a visual legacy of irresistible and lasting appeal.

I am a blood relative of President Jack Kennedy.......2007-05-22
The Kennedy Mystique is a wonderful book. My 7 year old Daughter likes to look at the pictures. My Exwife gave me heck because at school my 7 year old Daughter said she was a relative of President Kennedy and none of her classmates believed her and told the teacher she was making up stories. I have computer printouts from Ancestry dot com showing the relationship between my Great Great Grandfather David Doughty Morgan 1851 to 1915 and President Jack Kennedy. Like the early Christians were persecuted I was told I was crazy at my Church for saying I was a blood Kennedy realtive until I brought in the Computer printouts proving this to be true. The coauthor of this book mister Dallek makes the writing about the Kennedy family Prestigious. Dont just look at the pictures, read about Americas greatest Family the Kennedys. My prior reviews about President Kennedy being alive have been deleted. Lets see what happens this time. I invoke freedom of speech for keeping this Amazon review on the internet. Write a response to whether you believe Brad Morgan (Kennedy) is the real American Shadow Vice President a tradition that goes back to 1774 and the Continental Congress and is Constitutional.

Book Description
Packed with more than 300 photographs from archives and private collections -- many published here for the first time -- entertaining anecdotes, political analysis, the dynamics of family relationships, and behind-the-scenes gossip, America's First Families offers the first up-close look at the families -- from John and Abigail Adams in 1800 to Bill and Hillary Clinton -- who have intrigued and entranced the American public for two centuries.
Carl Sferrazza Anthony opens the door to the world's most famous residence to reveal life as it was actually lived there. He takes readers into the heart of loyalties and estrangements, and the emotional pressures that politics brings to bear upon the forty White House families, from their arrivals to their "notices to vacate." Readers will enjoy an unprecedented tour of the previously unseen private rooms as used and decorated by each family. Revealed too are the personal proclivities of the presidents and how their families both sustained them through public crises and were used for political advantage. They'll get a firsthand look at the preparations for White House weddings and other occasions; meet the parents and children of the presidents -- as well as eccentric relatives; and discover the patterns of working, resting, and relaxing that shaped the nuts and bolts of family life.
A magnificent combination of visual delights and insider information, America's First Families is an irresistible invitation to spend some time at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

America's First Families.......2007-01-19
This is a fascinating book. It is a wonderful compendium of trivia, probably not available in any other volume. It contains a wonderful assortment of pictures of First Families, some of which have never before been published. The book is well organized into chapters detailing various aspects of the Presidential families' lives and activities. for me, one of its prime attractions is that it does not include the politics or issues of the President's era.
At times, it is a little confusing, because the author skips from one family to another rather abruptly, so it requires a little getting used to in order to follow the narrative.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in the social and "human" aspects of the White House families.
Enjoyable light historical reading.......2001-04-10
This book gives an insight into the private lives of the first families. We learn about their extended families, hobbies, illnesses, preparations for leaving the White House when their terms are completed, etc. The pictures are what really makes this book great. We see Lyndon Johnson in bed with his wife watching tv and we see the older George Bush in bed too (can you imagine Nixon or Clinton letting down his guard like this?). We see Gerald Ford in his bathrobe. If you always wanted to see such a sight, there is a photo of Eleanor Roosevelt in a bathing suit and a rare photo of Franklin in shorts with his polio ravaged legs exposed to the camera. We see painful personal moments such as the famous photo of Nixon hugging his daughter Julie when he made the decision to resign. In short this is, at times, a very rare personal and intimate glimpse into the lives of the first families. I enjoyed it and recommend it highly.
Oh, What a Lovely Piece of Work This Is!.......2001-01-12
I have been fortunate enough to read Mr. Anthony's brilliant "First Ladies" mini-opuses, and highly looked forward to this epic on the lives of our First Families. I sat for three hours stright with an almost constant smile on my face as I ran through the pages. What an amazing acheivement Mr. Anthony has pulled together! I can only imagine the painstaking research needed to find out the tidbits sprinkled throughout. There is so much information in this novel that it almost boggles the mind at times and is a bit overwhelming. I wondered if everything was sinking in, when I saw Mr. Anthony speak at the Richard Nixon library on CSPAN one night recounting the tales found here. Every story he told was instantly recalled and sentences finished before explaining. The sheer knowledge that one can gain from reading this novel is tremendous. (Where else can you find a list of President's favorite movies? By Reagan selecting Rambo, it does nothing but prove what a complete and utter moron we had occupying the White House under his reign).....Point proven further....When listing President's favorite reading options, Mr Anthony lays out beautiful examples of this. President Clinton enjoys biographies of his predecessors, Eisenhower military biographies and TR, anything he could get his hands on. Reagan? Newspaper comics.....I shall leave my review at that.
Entertaining look at White House hsitory.......2000-11-13
I purchased this book yesterday and I can't put it down. It is filled with great pictures and stories of the forty-one famlies who lived in the White House. This is a great source of presidential trivia and provides a human element to the most famous family in America. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in American history and the lives of the presidents.

Book Description
His image today is part of America, from the penny to Mount Rushmore, but in his own day Abraham Lincoln was as much reviled as he was revered, and he remained a controversial figure up to the time of his assassination. Now one of our preeminent authorities on Lincoln charts his rocky road from obscure western politician to national icon.
In Lincoln Seen and Heard, Harold Holzer probes the development of Lincoln's image and reputation in his own time. He examines a vast array of visual and documentary sources to demonstrate the president's impact both on the public and on the historical imagination, enabling us to see the man from Illinois as his contemporaries saw him.
Holzer considers a wide range of images--prints, portraits, political cartoons--to reveal what they say about Lincoln. He shows the ways in which Lincoln was depicted as Great Emancipator and as commander-in-chief, how he was assailed in cartoons from both sides of the Mason-Dixon line, and how printmakers both memorialized and capitalized on his assassination. Sharing dozens of historic reproductions, Holzer writes with unabashed enthusiasm as he unravels the symbolic meaning and the message of these images and explains their relation to political and military events of the time.
Holzer also takes a closer look at Lincoln's oratory, the words of a man often ridiculed for his manner of speaking and homespun image. He shows how Lincoln's choice of words in the Emancipation Proclamation was actually designed to minimize its humanitarianism and argues that the myth of his failure at Gettysburg has been unfairly exaggerated. Through this provocative collection, Lincoln emerges not only as a leader dependent upon his public image but also as an active participant in its development. Lincoln Seen and Heard helps us distinguish man from myth, while offering a superb introduction to the work of one of our most provocative Lincoln scholars.
Customer Reviews:
Lincoln Seen & Heard.......2000-05-23
With its reproduction of over 50 rare prints from the 19th century, Harold Holzer's LINCOLN SEEN & HEARD is a rare treasure trove of Lincoln images. Holzer, author of several studies on Abraham Lincoln, offers rich biographical and historical details during his visual and textual analysis.
Holzer's study of Lincoln's public image in iconography and language is logically divided into thematic chapters. In his study of the comtemporary visual iconography of Abraham Lincoln, Holzer examines images of Lincoln as the Great Emancipator and as the Commander in Chief. He also analyses images of Lincoln's assissination and compares prints of Lincoln and the Confederacy's Jefferson Davis. In his discussion of Lincoln's language. Holzer addresses Lincoln's impromtu oratory as well as his two most famous texts, the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address. Holzer's book is well-balanced and richly documented. Very readable, this book should interest both historical scholars and general readers.
Book Description
The essence of the presidency is often captured in small moments: a bullhorn clasped in one hand as the other encircles a retired fireman; a fallen policeman's badge, given by a grieving mother, that becomes the symbol of "lives that ended and a task that does not end;" a handshake between the leaders of Britain and the United States, whose shared resolve toppled a threat to world peace and liberated the people of Iraq. This book is a collection of those moments, captured by the White House photographers, whose work provides an intimate, behind-the-scenes account of the Bush presidency.
Other features:
- Over 100 photos
- Introduction by Karen Hughes
- Select quotes from George W. Bush
- A reprinting of Bush's 2005 inaugural address

Portrait of a WHAT???.......2007-09-25
Amazing to read this book after all these years. The very thought that Little Georgie was ever a "leader" is risible at this late stage in the game.
Typical reviews from baby-killing liberals.......2007-02-26
This book was a wonderful read. I am just glad the left-wing cowardly traitors that are reviewing this book, that they certainly did not read or for most of them - did not have someone read it to them, are not leading this country. These liberal cowards would have invited our enemies to attack our country; as long as they did not kill any innocent unborn babies - that right belongs to the pro-choicers. Anyway, real Americans with faith will enjoy this book. Thank God for a President with convictions, morals and values. Oh yeah, I keep hearing about how stupid, unintelligent, or ignorant our President is. I wonder how many of these traitors are Yale and Harvard graduates. Thank you President Bush for not allowing these cowardly Americans to destroy our country.
Oh, Brother!.......2007-02-18
Portrait of a leader? The name of the author of this nonsense should be enough to set off a very loud alarm. Karen Hughes is not by any stretch of the imagination an objective journalist. She was, in fact, instrumental in getting this moron elected in 2000. If I could have rated this book "negative five stars" I would have done so. Knowing what we now know, "Portrait of a Leader" will be remembered as a curiosity and nothing more. It does have value, though. Anything that tries to portray our half-witted president (the "First Fool" as I call him) as a capable, intelligent commander-in-chief, is going to be chock full of unintentional humor - and this book is no exception. Truth be told, it's an absolute scream. For a more realistic look into the career of this disgusting president, please read, SHRUB: The Short, Happy Political life of George W. Bush by Molly Ivins and Lou DuBois. It's alot funnier - but for all the right reasons.

Portrait of a Complete Disaster.......2007-02-07
This book is all a bunch of hypocrisy. Ever since Bush was sworn into office in 2001, he did the worse he could to our country in a long time. Whether it's blowing billions on the Iraq war or his lack of knowledge (which spawned the ever-so-infamous "Bushism"), we all know this man is to blame. Thanks to him, gas prices and unemployment rates are up, and he gets a novel portraying him as a "leader"? Give me a break. This idiot also got a 2nd term only because people wanted him to solve the Iraq crisis, but then again, President Bush would rather blow the country's cash on the American troops fighting a senseless war than on our country's people.
Use this book only as toilet paper or firewood. If it wasn't for his daddy, Bush would be doing business greeting you at your local Texas Wal-Mart.
