Fantastic book!.......2007-10-15
I read this book years ago, when I was about 10 years old and didn't even understand fully the depth of the Holocaust. But even then I enjoyed this tale of a girl surviving against the odds. Great book for everyone; helps even the young to understand the plight of millions during that dark era and got me interesting in the Holocaust.
A Heart Breaking Story of Survival.......2007-10-01
This book will leave you speechless. Just when you think humanity can
go no lower, the author describes acts that leave you amazed that
humans can be so cruel. A story of survival that needs to be told so that
we never forget the loss of so many innocent lives.
one of the best.......2007-07-10
I have been reading many Holocaust memoirs in search of one that would be appropriate to use in teaching junior high English; this memoir is the best I have found for teens because it is written from the perspective of a young adolescent girl. The voice in the memoir is so different because even though she is trapped in the death camp, she still has many of the same cares and worries of a normal teenage girl. When she talks about how she had a crush on a young Jewish boy in the ghetto, feeling ugly after her hair is shorn off, her frequent fights with her critical mother, or her excitement about being told she was pretty, she could easily be one of my students. But her will to live is anything but normal, as she talks about surviving in the filth of Auschwitz and risking her life to save that of her mother. The most gripping scene of the novel is when American forces mistakenly fire on her transport car as they are being shipped from Auschwitz juts days before liberation. Many of the young girls around her literally blown apart while she sits in horror. Somehow she manages to survive and move on in her life, and even return to German to confront her past many years later. She has truly lived a thousand years.
Must Read.......2007-05-30
We must never forget the Holocaust. There are many lessons learned in works about the Holocaust. This book is about a 13 year old girl fighting to survive in a concentration camp. Imagine your child being thrown out of school, can no longer keep your possessions. Not be allowed to talk even to a neighbor. Have little food, and then thrown into a nightmare beyond belief! Not to be a gloomy gus but I think we must learn from the holocaust. We never know what tomorrow may bring.
This book was heartbreaking.......2007-05-17
For some reason this book was harder for me to read than the others. I guess because it was written from the view point of a young girl. She even calls her mother -'mommy' throughout the book so at first I thought it might be relatively tame compared to the other accounts. Especially because the book was recommended for Young Adults. It was not! The things she describes seemed more horrific than the other books I've read. You dont want to believe this young girl would go through all she did and survive. Honestly who would want to? I went to bed dreaming about her story. It really makes all our problems seem so laughable and insignificant. And to think that -we- the human race did those things to one another is an unbearable truth to bear. It is another testament to faith and the Human will to survive.

Fascinating Book.......2007-05-20
After reading Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, I had to learn more about foot binding and the slippers...wonderful book and the pictures are amazing.
Haunting and Beautiful.......2006-09-06
Like most Westerners, I am both horrified and fascinated by the Chinese tradition of footbinding. I found this book to be an excellent source of images and history, and cultural context of this rite of passage for Chinese girls. I appreciated that this book is written in a neutral voice, allowing the reader to explore the many meanings of footbinding, rather than simply condemning it as an abhorrant practice.
really lovely volume.......2006-03-14
A stunningly visual book, with wonderful pictures and lots of historical information. Enjoy!
Beautiful Photography.......2006-03-01
This is just a gorgeous book. I bought it to use in a class that I taught on culture. It has great "shock" value in terms of educating students about the power of culture over physical circumstances and "voluntary" body alteration. I do have an appreciation for the craftsmanship of the tiny slippers as well.
Lovely.
All my questions about the custom of footbinding were answered........2005-11-30
Subtitled "A Thousand Years of an Erotic Tradition", this 1997 book measures 10" by 10" square. On the cover is a photograph of more than two dozen authentic shoes which were handmade for the tiny bound feet of Chinese women.
I've always been interested in learning more about this custom, and this book clearly explains every single thing I've ever wanted to know. The author is an American photojournalist whose travels often took her to China. Often, she would find some of these tiny shoes in a market and started collecting them. She also did a lot of historical research and interviewed many elderly Chinese women who still can remember the details of their childhood foot binding. Some of them even allowed her to photograph their bare misshapen feet.
Foot binding has been outlawed in China since the Communist revolution. Women born after this time grow up with normal feet. But before 1949, little girls had to endure a painful childhood. It must have been awful but people really believed that if this wasn't done, the young girl would have no chance of getting a husband. Indeed, this was true. Marriages were arranged and the future mother-in-law would insist on seeing a shoe that the girl had embroidered. If the shoe was very small, it would be understood that the girl could withstand pain. If the embroidery was good, it would prove that the girl was well disciplined. The men also wanted wives with bound feet. Not only did it reflect on the man's wealth and standing in the community but it was also an erotic turn-on.
They say that one picture is worth a thousand words, and this book certainly proves it. There are many pictures of the tiny shoes and of the women wearing them. I was impressed by the complexity of the workmanship and their startling beauty. But the most moving of all were the photos of the bare feet themselves. Looking at them gave me a sick and uncomfortable feeling.
I loved this book because it opened my mind to a culture that is very foreign to me. It made me understand exactly what these women's lives had been for more than ten centuries. Yes, I was saddened. But I was also enlightened. I learned something. And that made this book very worthwhile.
This is a beautiful book. I highly recommend it. But it is certainly not for the squeamish.

A Collection to be Cherished.......2005-03-20
Forty-seven black gay male writers speak boldly about who they are and the world they live in in this outstanding collection of poetry, prose, essays, and fiction. Edited, compiled, and thoughtfully prefaced by best-selling novelist E. Lynn Harris, Freedom In This Village is both vital and entertaining as it dazzles with a myriad of rich literary styles and re-challenges with thought-provoking, soul-stirring discourse.
How wonderful it is to revisit Exxex Hemphill, regarded the premiere black gay poet in America at the time of his death from AIDS related complications in 1995. His bitter/beautiful five-part poem about love and lust in the ghetto, "Tomb of Sorrow" (1989), represents him here: "Gunshots ring out above our heads,/ a few of us are seeking romance,/ others a piece of ass,/ some--a stroke of dick./ The rest of us are killing./ The rest of us get killed."
From James Baldwin's excerpted swan song "Just Above My Head" (1979) to Randy Boyd's infuriating interracial fiction excerpt "Walt Loves The Bearcat" (2004), we are treated to, shocked by, and enthralled with the literary profound and profane.
Marlon Riggs' 1991 essay "Black Macho Revisited: Reflections of a SNAP! Queen" is a powerfully on-target indictment of black America's distorted view of Black Macho and it's relegation of black male homosexuals to Negro faggotry and minstrelsy, while editor Harris closes this volume with trademark pop lit (What I Did for Love") that dangles enough to hold promise of a new series wide open.
Marvin K. White's "FOR COLORED BOYS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED S-CURLS WHEN THE HOT COMB WAS ENUF" (1990) still retains its sass and sting. Don Belton's 1994 interview "Where We Live: A Conversation with Essex Hemphill and Isaac Julien," conducted on the heels of Marlon Riggs' AIDS related death, is a conversation around Riggs' film "Black Is...Black Ain't" which exploresd the nexes of black identity and masculinity and features appearances by Hemphill, bell hooks, Michelle Wallace, Cornel West, and Angela Davis.
Novelist/journalist James Earl Hardy, founder of the Afrocentric gay hip-hop romance genre, is representred by an excerpt from his classic "B-Boy Blues" follow-up, the satisfying but lesser "2nd Time Around" (1996), Vega by his gentle 1989 poem "Brothers Loving Brothers," while Carl Alan Johnson's 1993 "Post-Nulcear Slut" still reads as fab-nasty as ever.
This collection is too rich to ignore, too diverse to fully assess in this small space. Suffice it to say that this is a keeper to be visited often.
Finally, I must echo the sentiments of a previous reviewer. Reading these wonderful pieces, knowing that so many of the authors have been taken away from us by AIDS--Hemphill, Riggs, Joseph Beam, Steven Corbin, Melvin Dixon, Gary Fisher, David Frechette, Craig G. Harris, and Assoto Saint--is a sad reminder that we have been given limited access to these brilliant minds. So let us cherish this book for its rarity as much as for its insights, illuminations, and artistry.
E. Lynn Harris should be commended for this tremendous undertaking and achievement.
read it, yeap........2005-02-07
"Just once, I wanna feel something real," says L.M. Ross in his ode to the moan. Y'all better get these sheets. Ya better. They'll change you.
My Brother Likes This Book.......2005-01-26
Syracuse New York
My brother happens to be gay and I got him this book for christmas. He LOOOOOOOVES it. He says it's one of the best books he's read in years.
Just my two cents.
Our Time Has Come.......2005-01-06
I just started reading it (smile) but am compelled to write the following...If you are a lover of Black Gay Male Literature then this is the book to purchase.
Freedom In This Village: Twenty-Five Years of Black Gay Men's Writing edited and and with an introudction by E. Lynn Harris.
I happened (smile) to be coming from The Abbey during my time home in Los Angeles last week when I passed A Different Light Bookstore. I went in and displayed prominently was this book and of course, I had to have it, and so I bought it, and anticipated reading it once I completed "The Last Dream Before Dawn."
I started reading this book last night on the 2 train (New York City) and while I was reading "About The Contributors" a combination of anger and sadness came over me and one that at this time I cannot capture but it was more to the fact that we need books that celebrate us...Black Gay Men
I was saddened by the number of men who died of AIDS related illnesses and was like what are we doing, what am I doing, to honor these men who made it possible for me to be one that to some degree has a bit more "freedom in the village" than they did.
As I was looking through the "Table of Contents" I saw some familiar names and new names that I look forward to reading.
We need or rather I feel we need books like this on the regular as there are so many voices as one is not merely enough and also cannot tell all our stories.
I implore you, each of you, to rise and have your voices heard and if you are a lover of Black Gay Male Literature then by all means purchase this book if not for you then for someone else.
With that said, I have some reading to do (smile)...
Book Description
In this monumental new account of the Vichy years, Julian Jackson examines French experiences of Occupation during the 'Black Years' of 1940-4. Pulling together previously separate 'histories' of occupation, resistance, and collaboration he presents a definitive history of the period. This is a more complex history than the traditional dichotomy between 'collaboration' and 'resistance', one in which the ideological frontiers between Vichy and the Resistance were often blurred. This study ranges from the politics of Marshal Petain's regime to the experiences of the ordinary French people, from surrender in 1940 to the purges of liberation. The author restores the organized Resistance to a more central role than has been customary in recent years and presents a new social history of the resistance which takes in the roles of foreigners, women, Jews, and peasants. He uncovers the long term roots of the Vichy regime in political and social conflict and cultural crisis stretching back to the Great War and concludes by tracing the lasting legacy and memory of Occupation since 1945.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant.......2007-01-14
By all accounts, this is the penultimate history of "the dark years" in France during 1940-44. I agree wholeheartedly. The approach is at once scholarly without being pedantic. Every page is a gem. I have learned so much about not only the years of the occupation, but also about France itself, and why its history (political and social) contributed greatly to the rise of the Vichy government. There are, according to Jackson, proved beyond the shadow of a doubt, many, many strands of influence upon not only Vichy but the Resistance and how both were viewed during and after the war. To those who complain that it is "geared toward specialists", I suggest that you choose your topics a bit more carefully if you want something a bit more simplistic. The subject is not easy, but Jackson does a masterful job of keeping the prose interesting and vibrant. This would get SIX stars if it were possible. Bravo. A tour de force that belongs in every historian's library.
Not for the casual reader.......2004-05-20
In other readings of World War II, I had always felt I did not have a solid grounding in the history of Vichy France. I have been greatly intrigued for some time as to how a country like France could have collaborated to such a degree. This gap in knowledge, I hoped, could be filled by a general treatise on the subject. Having reviewed several books on Vichy France I chose 'France- The Dark Years, 1940-1944' as the one work upon which I would rely.
While I did admire the scope of the work, and have no argument that this book may be called the latest definitive source, be warned that this book is not written for those who do not have a working knowledge on the subject. The author does not spend time on set-up: the reader is presumed to know of not only the leading political figures in France during the 1930's-40's, but also those of greater obscurity. The list goes on with the presumptions of the author- we are supposed to know about newspapers of the era (of which there were many), political parties, both major and insignificant, and the names of resistance groups.
Again, this would not be critical if I had the requisite knowledge of the politics and society of France during this era, of which I do know some. But this book is written for the doctoral level student of this era in history, not for those seeking a more general overview.
DARK FRANCE.......2003-09-05
Although I knew something about de Gaulle, Vichy, "The Resistance," etc; usually these topics were tangential to some other main topic I was reading. Jackson's BIG book set me straight on everything I always wanted to know about Vichy, the Germans, and the Free French, Petain, de Gaulle, etc.
France 1940-1944 covers highly controversial "history."
Almost none of the various personalities and political parties survive Jackson's detailed analysis without taking their "lumps." France 1940-1944 presents an ambiguous, painful story about collaboration, indifference and a few resisters.
Surely the French will never escape the shame of Vichy
Jackson often delivers clever insights and mixed judgments. Jackson gives you enough background to evaluate some of the following puzzles:
·Why did Churchill recognize De Gaulle in 1940, instead of the Vichy Government?
·Why did FDR try so hard to get rid of "Le Grand Charles" (De Gaulle)?
·Why did many French literally cheer when France lost the War with Germany in June 1940?
·Why did powerful and influential French express such bitterness, invective, and hatred against Jews?
·Why did the "Resistance" accept De Gaulle in 1944? After all, thousands of French fought and died inside France while De Gaulle remained safely in England and Africa.
·Why didn't the Communists launch a takeover at the time of the Liberation?.
After you read this book you will understand some of the powerful destabilizing forces in French society. But Dark Years is a long book, it's serious reading, and it's written in
a rather academic style -- dull if you are not really intrigued by France, the French, De Gaulle, the Germans, the Jews, etc.
Limited in scope, but excellent in detail.......2003-03-31
Buy this book - truly outstanding. I look forward to the other parts in Jackson's three-part series, "France: The Dark Years: before 1940" and "France: The Dark Years: after 1944". I gather there is a special book being brought out called "France: The Very Dark and Frankly Bloody Annoying Months, October 2002 - March 2003"
Definitive World War II History on Nazi-Occupied France.......2002-12-22
Julian Jackson's history is the most distinguished account I've read on France during the period from 1940 through 1944. He makes an excellent case noting how the Vichy Regime was indeed part of a longstanding political tradition in France which went as far back as the Ancien Regime; he makes a similar observation of the Resistance, noting how its political philosophy could be traced directly back to the French Revolution. Jackson clearly notes the intense dislike - if not outright hatred - of many French towards their German occupiers, noting that such sentiments may have played a decisive part in ensuring the survival of more French Jews than their counterparts in other Nazi-occupied countries. Much to my surprise, he clearly demonstrates how support for the Vichy Regime came not only from a staunchly conservative elements - but also liberal, and indeed socialist elements - within French society. He also succeeds in noting how figures such as French resistance leader Jean Moulin and future French president Francois Mitterand underwent transformations - some major, but also minor - in their politics, eventually shifting their support from the Vichy regime to DeGaulle's Free French movement. Despite Vichy's reputation for cultural as well as political repression, Jackson shows that cultural activities ranging from the fine arts through film not only survived, but also flourished, at least during the early history of the Vichy Regime.

Big Beat Heat.......2006-09-24
This is a good book about the life of legendary DJ Alan Freed. His personal life, as a radio and tv host and as promotor of his own concerts around the east coast.
His failures seem to have caused his downfall, a terrible riot during a show in Boston for which he was indicted and also payola, receiving money to play records. Both cases cost him a lot of money and pain.
He was married three times, unfortunately the last two wives refused to talk to the author. Jackson says that his third wife Inga was also a heavy drinker, which did not help at all. He died in 1965, only 44 years old
explains a lot!.......2006-05-12
I really enjoyed this book. Several personal stories about Alan Freed provide insight into his life. The writer does a good job of explaining the historical events/context that surrounded Freed's life. It's a shame Freed didn't live longer to see what he contributed to popular music.

A great book for young readers.......2000-04-29
If you can find a copy of this book, I recommend it highly as perfect for young readers. The stories and poems are very short and to the point so a child won't be overwhelmed by a huge plot or excess of words. This was one of my first books and one from which my mom taught me to read at 3 years of age. I hope to do the same with my daughter.
EXCELLENT.......1998-01-06
When I was a little girl my mom would read this book to my sister & I every nite. We always looked forwarded to having a story read from the book. I am 26 now and I treasure the book very much, even with out the cover intact! My sister is pregnant and I would like to order the book for her so her child can enjoy what we did. Please make the book available soon!!! Thank You.

It's so sad..........2005-11-30
Maybe I'm the only one that feels this way...I would never read this book, let alone give money to this Marisa person by endorsing it. I think it's dishonest and deceitful for someone to capitalize on an ex's success. If Alex won't endorse her book, why should I? BSB forever!
the best.......2000-12-04
I really enjoyed this book! it was one of the best Backstreet Boy books I have ever read! i am also a big big fan of Aj McLean and think that the is the best! I recommend this book to all Aj and Backstreet Boys fans! GO READ IT!!!
Ehhhh....well, it's about time.......2000-10-11
Okay...I love AJ to death and I'm glad that she wrote this book to inform other AJ fans out there of how the real AJ is. I mean, a real AJ fan could be nothing but grateful for such a inciteful depiction of the man himself. I love the fact that she gathered old pictures and letters....but what I didn't like was the fact that of the letters that she wanted to keep private...she really shouldn't have published them and then covered them up.. I was overall happy with the book.
PS and what in the world does "Dino" mean?
This is DA BOMB!.......2000-07-29
I don't see how you can say this book is bad. It shows a soft and sweet side we usually don't see in AJ. You also know that you love AJ if you bought this book, so you know you love those pictures. And it seems to me that Marisa still loves him and is not trying to get revenge like some people think by showing all these things. So for my rating...5 stars. Buy the book, you WON'T regret it.
LOVED IT!.......2000-07-29
I won my own personal copy of Marisa's well written book, and I have to say, I enjoy the book! It is written in a very tasteful matter and the pictures are awesome. I don't think Marisa could have done a better job with it! It's terrific!
