A Coach's Letter to His Son
Mel Allen Manufacturer: Creative Editions ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1568461348 |
Book Description
Baseball is a game steeped in tradition, played from backyards to major league stadiums, and cheered by millions of fans. But at its most intimate and fundamental level, baseball is a game grounded in fathers and sons: in playing catch in the twilight hours after supper, in sons standing before old fences swinging at their father's pitches. Creative Editions is proud to present
A Coach's Letter to His Son, a nostalgic tribute to the game.
The words of Mel Allen and sketches and photo-realistic paintings by John Thompson combine to convey a coach's story and regrets to his son, a baseball player not yet in his teens. Reflecting on his own baseball childhood, the importance of family, and the high-pressure atmosphere that surrounds youth sports at even the earliest levels of competition today, the narrator comes to reassess his priorities and rediscover the purity of baseball. In an age when "America's pastime" is increasingly defined by statistics, awards, and championships,
A Coach's Letter to His Son is a powerful and touching reminder of the heart of the game.

Book Description
Today, more grandparents are taking an active role in the lives of their grandchildren with autism. This loving book began as a series of love letters from grandfather to grandson and grew into one of the most touching and insightful books we have to offer.Customer Reviews:
A Touching, Insightful Look at What it Means to Be Autistic.......2000-11-03
"Dear Charlie" is based on letters from a grandfather to his Autistic grandson, Charlie. As Mr. Martin shares in his letters his thoughts on what it will mean to Charlie to grow up Autistic, he paints a loving, well thought out sourcebook to accompany his grandson through life as a grandfather realizes that Autism has not made Charlie disabled, it has simply made him differently abled.
I am delighted that the publisher had the good sense to publish a book that goes beyond the one in a million miracle cures that so often form the bulk of the better selling books on Autism.
Mr. Martin's letters to Charlie provide parents a valuable resource to open a dialogue with the higher functioning autistic child which reassures him that it is ok to have Autism. For the older Autistic child who can read, I can't imagine a better tool for boosting self esteem than urging him to read this book.
This is one Autism source book I know I'll reach for again and again as I lead my two Autistic sons towards puberty and adulthood.
Thank you Mr. Martin for showing our children that they can live well with Autism. Bravo!

Delightful!.......2003-05-24
These letters were generally written to his children while they were away at school. The letters are treasures from the Age of Letters. Things which today would be communicated in person, by telephone or e-mail were, in TR's day, communicated and preserved in correspondence. The letters cover a wide variety of topics. Events of daily life of the Roosevelt family and evaluations, favorable and unfavorable, of the child constitute the majority of the letters. Nothing was too small for TR's attention. Horse and carriage rides, playing with children or wrestling with Japanese wrestlers, his tennis partners and White House visitors are all recorded for our enjoyment. TR also used these letters to give vocational advice as well as to comment on public events of the day. TR also expounds on his views on literature and history, as well as his views on family values. The classical literature which he and "Mother" read to the children are mind boggling!
This is a book which is enjoyable to read and also makes you think. TR's relationship with his children and his interactions with them provide a standard against which we can measure our own lives. Read this book and treasure it!

The Essence of Fatherhood.......1998-06-28
Reading this book, one gets the unmistakable impression that Teddy Roosevelt was infinitely more concerned about the lives of his children than he ever was about the affairs of the Presidency. Readers are left with the impression that at a moments notice, he would give up everything for the welfare of even one of his kids. What a legacy to leave for history.
In an age where families are under siege and children are becoming more like trophies that are displayed, Teddy Roosevelt's letters to his children shine as a beacon pointing us to what being a parent is all about, raising, loving, and nurturing our children.
What ever happened to writing letters? The art of letter writing has all but passed away. In T.R.'s time reading letters was a family event, something that was eagerly anticipated by the entire family. Today's family is forced to deal with the constant barrage of faxes, e-mails and cellular phones. Family conversation has been reduced to digital bytes rather than meaningful conversation. George Washington may have been the father of our nation, but Teddy Roosevelt had a far more lasting impact, he was a father to his children.
Terrifically humanistic view of one of our great presidents.......1996-11-19

Dear Cara : Letters From Otto Frank; Anne's Father Shares His Wisdom
Cara Weiss Wilson , and Otto Frank Manufacturer: North Star Publications (MA) ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1880823233 |
Book Description
The Diary of Anne Frank taught the value of love and forgiveness and became a worldwide, enduring bestseller. In Dear Cara: Letters from Otto Frank, the story continues and expands. Through his letters, Otto, the only survivor in the family, became a treasured wise friend to thousands of young people around the world giving simple, honest responses to their questions. Cara, a young American girl, kept his letters, followed his advice, and honored Otto as her surrogate father. Nearly 20 years later, as a grown woman and mother, she journeyed to Amsterdam to see the home where Anne had been hidden in an attic for two years before her murder. Cara listened to some of the holocaust stories from the Dutch people who had sheltered the Franks, then traveled to Switzerland to fulfill a life-long dream to finally meet her mentor and his second wife in Switzerland. She embraced the tender, frail old man who had been able to live Anne's belief that "In spite of everything, I still believe people are really good at heart." He had not forgotten those who had betrayed their wartime hiding place, nor did he wish for revenge. He had managed, through his own radiant spirit and the poignant words of his dead daughter, to embrace the best in people and forgive those who had been the worst. Cara and Otto, generations apart, know love can bloom in every culture through the most painful of times and their brief coming together was the best of times. Dear Cara: Letters from Otto Frank captures the horrors of war in Europe and the tumultuous postwar decades in America. Most of all, it shares the treasures of love in all its manifestations. Otto is a beloved teacher, and Cara really listens from her heart: each is a blessing for the other. This story tells it honestly as their private letters reveal their true selves and bridges the gap between their ages, cultures and life experiences. Dear Cara: Letters from Otto Frank is a "keeper," a book for young and old readers. PUBCOMMENTS: The Diary of Anne Frank, one of our enduring inspirational books, was written by a young girl who died in a Nazi concentration camp in World War II. Otto Frank, her father and the only family survivor, motivated people all over the world to carry on Anne's message of love and hope in their own lives. Otto never wanted Anne remembered as a victim but as a living spirit through her words. A generation later, a young American girl began conversations with Otto through letters reflecting her own chaotic teenage years and the violence in America in the 1960s and '70s. His responses helped her mature into a loving, trusting woman. Cara Weiss Wilson wrote this book from her extraordinary correspondence with Otto and the inspiration she drew from it. He validated her need to be heard and respected; he became her mentor, her wise "grandfather," as he was for so many others. He taught the importance of tolerance and true spirituality, focusing on the power of love, not revenge. He said, "If the world were ending tomorrow, I would still plant a tree today." He truly lived his message. Cara's twenty-year correspondence with Otto culminated in a memorable meeting shortly before his death, and influenced the rest of her turbulent life. Her remarkable book helps others lead fulfilling lives and renews our faith in the possibility of forgiveness and optimism.Customer Reviews:
From Girl to Woman (With a Very Special Mentor).......2001-04-01
So begins Otto Frank's first letter to a young American girl in 1957, a suburban California girl named Cara as much in the mainstream of American society as the pop songs she listens to on the radio. That girl had read Anne's diary, had been deeply moved by it, and had written to Anne's father.
He wrote back.
Cara wrote to him again. Otto wrote back. She wrote again. He wrote again. And so on and so forth...for decades. They grew close. Cara faced all the same questions we face, about school, love, marriage, child-rearing, politics, family. But she had a very, very special mentor.
This book is her story of that relationship. Yes, it's a remarkable pairing. But it's also a remarkable tour through the last half of the 20th century, through the Civil Rights movement and Vietnam, the Watergate days, too many wars in the Middle East; all reflected in a single woman's coming of age. The letters back and forth are always revealing and quite often gripping. They are about private troubles and public issues. And when Cara, as a woman, goes to visit an ailing Otto, by now an old man, it would take a reader with a hard heart indeed not to feel a lump in the throat, at least. Then, when Otto her a collection of something that takes us, the reader, completely over the edge, in the best possible way.
We recommend this book to anyone, of any age. It is just special.

More than Words.......2001-03-20
TR's letters to his son Quentin are especially touching, since later on Quentin took a German gunner's bullet through the head over France, driving TR into inconsolate murmerings lamenting the loss of his "Quentee-Quee." The development of these nicknames is chronicled in these letters.
For whatever reason TR wrote them, they read very movingly. TR's own namesake, Ted Jr., tried to pull off the same thing with his kids, documented in another out-of-print book written by Ted Jr (before his early heart attack during WWII) called "All in the Family." Wherein little Ted's mistake is to too slavishly imitate big TR's way of organizing walks, going camping, and dashing off notes. So there is something inimitable here, which should also caution the modern reader from hankering too quickly to start writing letters-a-plenty. But the picture drawing might be OK. What kid wouldn't like a few more scribbled pictures from their dad?
So at least look at the pictures here. Unlike Ronald Reagan's, these were done to and for TR's own kids. Not to dump on Ron, but to perhaps establish a reference point among competing versions of family dysfunction.
