The cases were written in an understandable English language and the CD-ROM was helpful in simplifing the chapters but they were too bare. They helped point you in the right direction but needed to be filled in a little more from the chapters.

Interesting information - don't know how much is true. A lot of chest thumping by the author. The evangelical ending kind of turned me off. If I'm going to find Jesus, it will not be through reading a novel. I think that Mr. Rosenberg has some intertesting takes on some recent world event - all probably driven by some really unbelievable coincidences and turns of history. Broader picture?, I think he's on to something. Whether God comes and reaks havoc as decribed in the Bible is anyone's guess. Overall, not a bad read - but then you put the book away and go on to something else.

This book is required for my finance class. However, this book doesn't explain the concepts well. For example what the book covered on the chapters have nothing to do with what were asked on the exercises. Students are often left in the dark trying to find themselves to come up with the formula (luckily we have the internet). If you buy this book make sure you have the TI BA II plus calculator. The book ONLY explains how to do most of the problems on THAT particular calculator instead of giving us the formula to use on any other calculator or using spreadsheet. Although there are some chapters that mentioned they will give instructions on how to solve the problems using MS excel but so far only chapter 1 gave us some basic information and rest of the chapters don't show anything (even though they mentioned it). So the words on the book and what you are actually getting don't match. Unless you have a very good instructor who's willing to work without getting help from the book, you are pretty screwed.
This book needs some serious editing (as I said the words and the contents don't match).

I got this book as the accompanying textbook to a Financial Management Class. Our class had to study most of the material on its own. As it usually is, the majority of the work is done at home hitting textbooks and figuring out how formulas are derived, which variables go where, and how fundamnetal coefficients (beta, alpha) are calculated.
Well this book is not well suited to acquire a solid foundation in finance without consulting better books or the internet. The result is: one needs much more time than actually necessary to learn the material.
Furthermore there are some statements; for instance "...multinational corporations (MNCs) issue stock in foreign countries..."; well I knew that, too, prior to this class. But why doesn't this book a little bit better explain why MNCs actually do this? There are several of such unexplained statements in the book. I am very disappointed.
Even though this book is really just about the fundamentals, it should have much better caught those fundamentals. I think I have to go to the Stanford, Harvard, or MIT MBA syllabi to find a good financial management book which goes a bit more in depth.
This book is priced by weight not by content! Definitely not worth the ~$160.

This is easily one of the best nutrition books on the market. If America followed these principles the vast majority of our health problems would start to correct themselves. This book, along with Dr. Fuhrman's Fasting for Health, packs a strong one-two punch.

This book makes a good case for switching to a mainly plant based diet. The premise is that by eating nutrient rich natural foods, primarily green veggies, that you can lose weight and gain better health. The first half of the book seems to be making the case for the diet scientifically then the rest is how to "Eat to Live." I've read a lot of diet books and this one does make the most sense to me. I've just started eating this way for about a week and a half. I've lost 5lbs and feel great.
The only problem with trying to get America on this diet is the price and availability of fresh fruits & vegetables. We don't currently produce enough fruits & vegetables for everyone to get their standard five servings per day.

This text book is an excellent resource for understanding Financial Management. It was a required text in my MBA program and the book is easy to go through on your own. There are exercises, or self tests, at the end of each section in the chapters, as well as many types of problems and self test questions at the end of the chapters.
We had a mediocre teacher in my MBA program, so going through the text was imperative. The authors do a great job breaking down concepts and some of the examples at end of chapter sections have the answers.
I comes with a supplemental booklet to further help undertand the "Time Value of Money" which, according to the authors, is a difficult concept.
One big plus for this text is that it shows you how to figure out the problems using formulas, using financial caluclators, and using an Excel spreadsheet.
I highly recommend doing the examples and problems in the book, and ordering the study guide. The study guide has additional examples and problems to work through and is the perfect supplement.
This is one text I am going to keep!

Many have criticized this book as being simplistic. And it is. That's because it's really a very simple concept that has been around for a while now. That is, that buying a basket of undervalued stocks will provide better returns than the market average. The system presented here is just a refinement of the low P/E approach that has been tested in many studies and that has been proven to work.
I believe the reason it is presented in such a simplistic manner is that people still insist on using short term trading strategies and chasing hot stocks in attempts to beat the market. Maybe if they are spoon fed the information, they will actually believe it.
Another criticism is that the author stresses that you must have faith in the method to be successful. Some have misrepresented this to suggest that you are asked to blindly believe in the method. This is far from the truth. There is plenty of data presented and nothing about this method conflicts with common sense or with common knowledge. What the author is saying is that you need to fully accept and understand the rationale of the method and not be shaken by periods of under-performance.

This is the perfect book to start as a Value Investor.
Greenblatt will show you the way to find out of favor stocks that are poised to make a comeback and putting statistics on the table as good books do. No accounting background needed and no need to suffer boring technical stuff and even better is that after finishing the book you won't have to walk alone because Greenblatt offers his website for free to find investment candidates.
After you finish with this book I would suggest you to try the Little Book on Value Investing by Christopher Browne.

As one of Professor Samaha's students, I found that using this particular text in corrolation with his lectures was extremely benefical in learning the basics of criminal law. His personal insight on the case studies undoubtedly aided in understanding the material, but I suspect that the text would not have stuck me as such an outstanding book had Professor Samaha not been there to add additional information on each aspect of his work. However, even without the personal commentary, the text is still a very clear and concise resource that would be excellent for an introductory course on criminal law.
Disappointment: I'm dumping this for another title.......2001-03-14
The text itself is barely adequate for an undergraduate level class (I wouldn't consider it for graduate study). At first I was excited by the addition of the "case method" technique for presenting criminal theory, but after struggling with the poorly edited cases I find myself actually skipping them.
The explanations and examples used in this book do meet minimal standards, but don't expect much more than that. It's almost as if the author were too busy with other projects to actually put together a quality product.
To make matters worse the support material provided to professors is horrible. I'm not normally a big "test bank" type of instructor, but one of the selling points to this book was the extensive library of material available. Sadly, this is once again proof that quantity does not always equal quality.
The test bank is full of very poorly worded questions. What's worse is that many of the questions have answers which contradict the book. In other words, the test key and the book do not agree....END

This new edition of the text once again proves that these authors are the masters of single subject research. I have used this text for five years in my graduate methods course and am completely satisfied with their coverage of the material of single subject research design. Just when a researcher thought it could not get any better, this new edition comes along with updates to the software.

I was pleased to hear that this text had been assigned in a graduate research course at my graduate school of social work. I'm seriously disappointed. I would not recommend this text's continued use. It is excessively repetitive, constantly restating previous material (commonly referred to as 'rehashing'), and, as a sidebar, i can't help but mention an irritating habit of unnecessary references to material yet to come ('we'll talk about that more in chapter 14.'). The writing style is terribly wordy, and in a weighted, clunky pseudo-conversational style that rarely is effective in a textbook. The actual technical information is obscured in a constant river of verbiage, usually in page after page of solid block text, the least helpful format when learning technical information (or when subsequently searching for specific information or techniques). The result? It serves as a strong sedative. Finally, the authors repeatedly express apologies, in what eventually (by page 350) feels like an obsequious and cloying manner, for putting forward an empirical and accountable approach to clinical practice. The worst, though, is the repetition of material, as if the reader were an idiot. The sheer relentlessness of it is what is so galling, and at $100 bucks, neither affordable nor worth the investment. There are other texts out there with clearer, cleaner, more articulate prose, that are more respectful of the reader, and at half the price, such as the classic and affordable: Single-Case Research Designs: Methods for Clinical and Applied Settings by Alan E. Kazdin. Ignore the pollyanna reviews above and below, and avoid this text, or if on the syllabus, protest and suggest an alternative.

Bloom, Fischer and Orme continue to make an unique contribution to improving practice in the human services by providing a road map by which practitioners can evaluate their effectiveness. I've been using their text book for over 15 years in teaching practice evaluation and in has been an invaluable help. The new edition has a CD Rom with SingWin, CAAP,and CAAS which I was able to install in Windows XP Home edition. You must install CAAS before CAAP for it to work. The sofware computerizes record keeping, score computation, and graph construction. I strongly reccommend this textbook for human services faculty.

This overpriced, poorly written book is full of information thats in the public domain, that offers no new ideas on securing a home, and enjoys far too much acclaim from people who don't want to bother to learn anything for themselves.

The author made a living constructing or designing high security homes and self sufficient homes, and writes this tremendous volume in a clear, all encompassing, format from his experience in the field, and from keeping abreast of new technology.
Make no mistake about it, the author does not parrot information in other survival or construction books, rather everyone else copies Skousen! This is the dictionary and encylopedia of not only secure room construction, but home construction in general.
After discussing some 'survival' philisophical issues, the book cuts right to the chase discussing properly laid out homes, from all angles. Beginning with the home, from location, ground, terrain, sun exposure, vegetation, water supply, (the author sticks in little tricks, like instrad of bullet proofing walls with kevlar, just fill a chasm with sand and gravel for better and cheaper results) room layout, expansion of rooms, schematics of extending a roof, basement, etc., its all laid out.
At this 'home' section the author lays out a goal for the planner, for example one goal would be 'have two seperate and distinct 'cooking heat' sources. Using the author's techniques and recommended equipment, this can be accomplished by almost anyone. This doubling up principle applies to everything, like water. You get ways to store water, resivoir it, etc., all within the confines of various types of houses. This book is good eneough that it covers the situations of like 95% of Americans.
This doubling up takes the better part of the book. From installing solar arrays in hot sunny areas, to gas, to portable generators, supply systems, high security shelters within the secure home, plumbing, transportation, sanitation, security systems, etc. Its all covered in EXHAUSTIVE detail.
As this type of work project requires in some cases, tremendous effort and sometimes too, money, and this material may save your life should you ever be the subject of criminal activity, you want the best plans and ideas. Clearly, there is no other book like this on the market period that gives so much information. In fact this book goes so deep into construction of homes, this book is a good primer for anyone looking to buy a home, whether they want to make it secure or not.
My hat definitely goes out to Joel Skousen. He did it first and did it the best!

Have you ever felt...vulnerable? Me too. Well, the sad fact is that 'The Secure Home' will undoutedly make you feel much more so. As an example: the author explains that where the population denisty exceeds 100 people per square mile - the population is enherently at risk even in minor shipping crises (caused by strike or natural disaster). The book will have a different effect on each who reads it. However, everyone who reads this text must agree that the author "knows what he is talking about." There are 20 well-detailed chapters on such topics as ("Lifestyle changes under self-sufficiency", "Strategy and Training For Quick Reaction To A Crisis", "Peparedness Planning and Threat Assessment", "Security", "Choosing the Right Household Appliances(awesome chapter!)", "Building a High Security Shelter" ). As I read these chapters I kept finding myself wishing that Mr. Skousen was my father! Why? Because REAL fathers prepare their children for the harsh realities of life. Too many parents want to shelter children from reality. It boggles my mind to think that parents refuse to discuss potential threats with their children because they are afraid it may cause them too much undue stress! Americans are simply not prepared to cope with crises today. My parents sure didn't help prepare me! I strongly suggest that you purchase this text and read it. When you find that you feel utterly vulnerable...ACT...make steps towards preparedness. (1) plan to relocate - try your best to move to a more rural location. Finally, this book is a must have if you are building your own house - TRUST ME - if you follow the author's sage advice (especially about which appliances are preparedness friendly, such as dual-fuel appliances!) your home will be able to handle crises WHEN one strikes.
The author also publishes a book Strategic Relocation: North American Guide to Safe Places. In Strategic Relocation the author lists the criteria that doesn't occur to the normal American when attempting to relocate one's residence or preparedness retreat. There is a great deal of text devoted to the author's notion that Russia poses a real (first strike)nuclear threat. I believe that he is dead on. However, those of you that believe that Russia poses no threat to America will undoubtedly be confused (at best) or annoyed (at worst). Joel Skousen opened my eyes to my vulnerability and empowered me with the steps that I can take to assuage that risk.

I ordered mine from Amazon. It's a great book for someone considering a new house and is worried about security.
I just received mine and it is already 1/2 underlined. It's 678 pages long, lots of new stuff compared to his previous editions. The size is a full 8 1/2 x 11 pages. There's lots of interesting design and construction ideas here.
For example, he details his concepts of using gravel to bulletproof your walls. Lots of great stuff on basements, and tieing in to the foundation. Great coverage on water self-sufficiency. Lots and lots of construction details. Drawings nicely supplement the text.
He talks about remodeling as well as new construction. Lots of practical tips you can apply right away. Here's a quick quote to illustrate how clearly written it is: "Brick and hollow block are only marginal shields for high powered projectiles. But they are readily available and relatively affordable. Both can be made much stronger with re- bar and ladder wire in the voids. Concreate block is often reinforced with voids filled. But few people know that brick can also be reinforced..."
Practical security strategies for your home........1999-06-30
The author has outdone himself on this book. He showes the lay person how to make his present home secure and self-sufficient, without running for the hills or digging a hole in the back yard. His ideas are backed with detailed examples of "how tos". The author has had 30 years experience in the security design field and "knows of what he speaks". His printed solutions to problems have been used in the past with success. This is not trail by error. He also includes a detailed resouce list of vendors for the hard to find equipment. I have used them and have been very pleased. A "must read" for the person who wants to secure their home and future.

No Excuses For Milady.......2007-03-12
As this is the ninth edition of what is alledgedly the most widely used text for beginning estheticians, then the persistent use of mediocre-to-poor science is inexcusable. Doesn't the author consult *anyone* in the scientific/medical community before sending this thing off to the printers? It is *not*, for instance, an established fact that vitamin A protects human beings from cancer of any sort. There is certainly data that looks promising, but that's it. And since vitamin K is manufactured in the intestinal tract, why is paper wasted insisting that students, many of them fresh out of high school, should be memorizing the names of the food sources of this abundant nutrient? Many of these kids struggle with the science that *is* relevent to the profession they hope to enter. My husband is a doctor, I'm an RN, and neither of us has ever used the term "non-striated" muscle. It's "smooth" muscle, for crying out loud! And while I'm on the subject of muscles, absolutely none - not one - healthcare professional I'm acquainted with has ever learned anything about the "belly" of the muscle! No matter - 18 year-old kids have to learn what is not required of first-year medical students. Please. Yes, as a basic introductory text it has much to recommend it; all the more reason to get the science right. S.T., RN, Rochester, NY

This is for esthetician students. The information is basic and well organized. The photos sometimes do not follow the text but it reads easily.
This is a good all around Beauty School book.......2005-08-21
Most of the chapters are well written and understandable. I have found some discrepancies in the information, and feel that the book could have been edited a little better. The book explains sanitation but does not go into the correct method of sanitizing all items that one would use during a service. The material is quite dry, and could really use something to get the student excited about the occupation that they have chosen.
