I don't know too many physicians who pick up a textbook and consider themselves qualified for an entire branch or subspecialty of medicine. Those who seek to add acupuncture to their practices almost universally do it out of frustration with drugs and surgery, and the quest to help their patients in ways that western medicine cannot. I fall into this category, as do several of my colleagues.
I was not issued this book through my training, but I have purchased a copy and have found it to be very valuable as a reference in many ways. I would highly encourage anyone who is undergoing, or considering undergoing, acupuncture education to get a copy of this book and add it to their library, and if you're already in practice it's critical. Since MANY patients who are seeking acupuncture do so for some complaint related to pain, having a larger armamentarium with which to treat them is beneficial to everyone. Get this book.
Never see an MD for acupuncture.......2006-04-20
It scares me that Medical doctors and osteopaths pick this book up and consider themselves qualified to do acupuncture.
To be an acupuncturist, you must graduate from a 3 year graduate level program of very intense study. Medical doctors do not appreciate or comprehend Chinese Medicine. To have our medicine classified as "hocus pocus" shows just how deep their lack of insight is.
Chinese medicine includes acupuncture and herbal formulations that will cure health issues at the root. Modern medicine focuses on eradicating the symptom. They assume that because the "symptom" that they were focusing on is gone, they have effected a cure.
If you go to an MD who does not have a graduate degree in Chinese Medicine, he can make you sick. The only case of a punctured lung from acupuncture in America was by an MD. He did not know the correct depth or direction of the needle.
I hope the arrogance of Medical doctors does not ruin people's perception of how effective acupuncture is. You do not just get a point book and start sticking needles in. [...]
Outstanding Work.......2006-03-04
I am a western trained Osteopathic Family Physician with a strong interest in integrating acupuncture into my clinical practice. I have studied numerous Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) texts and find myself lost and confused. My western trained mind has a difficult time grasping Qi, Essence, Channels, the Four Examinations, the Eight-Principle Pattern Identification. . . What I can grasp are the concepts of Biomedical and Neuroanatomic acupuncture as presented in "Biomedical Acupuncture for Pain Management". If you are a western trained health professional and are interested in learning more about acupunture or are interested in a practical book that can help you integrate acupuncture into your clinical practice, then this book is for you. I strongly recommend that you also look at "Acupuncture, An Anatomic Approach" by Houchi Dung. I carry both of these books back and forth to work every day. I use them and refer to them that often.
An excellent introduction to the new acupuncture.......2004-11-27
This book bridges the gap between the old and new acupuncture. What was previously seen as an exotic, traditional and obscure art is now simplified and quantified by these authors in a way that fits it directly into modern scientific thinking, and by extension, into the work of any contemporary health practitioner who has to treat pain. This book is all that a currently-practicing MD, osteopath, chiropractor, or other practitioner needs to incorporate acupuncture into their work, and in doing so to thoroughly transform and improve their ability to relieve most pain symptoms, and by amplifying the body's own natural healing capability, to cure many common causes of chronic and acute pain. I recommend it wholeheartedly, and anticipate that it will have a far-reaching effect.
Much needed practical book.......2004-10-10
Finally there is a biomedical explanation of practical acupuncture system which anyone practicing acupuncture can immediately use. It is easy to read and easy to understand. Explanation of basic neuroanatomy and dynamics of acupoints immediately answers a lot of my practical questions. The best part is their unique easy to follow system which I start to use for pain problems. This book definitely will be the desk reference for many practitioners.

Leon Uris takes us to the gritty inside of the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. Setting the stage with marvelous charaters that capture out hearts and minds, he leads us through the gruesome oppression of occupied Poland,then never lets up through the last gasps of the fight for freedom. Mila 18 will forever be remembered and its story should never be forgotten.

I received this book as a gift. At time of reading, I had no knowledge of Uris as an author. I am a British national now residing in the US. I have no religious belief.
The book gripped me to the extent that I read it through the night, getting no sleep. I was gripped by a need to know what would happen next to the characters, whose names I still clearly remember 15 years after reading the book. The enormity of the terror within the ghetto was built very subtly. The reality of the characters' situation only hit me when I closed the book after turning the final page -- then I cried. No other book I have read, before or since, has come close to creating the emotional impact of this masterpiece.
Irrespective of your beliefs or sentiments or prejudices, this work is a must-read.
Inspiring.......2007-03-26
I read this book first when I was in 6th grade (It's dense, I wouldn't necessarily say you can convince a 6th grader to read it)
I never left my living room for a week - I poured through it and read it twice. Though the details are lost with me now, the images and dreams about fighting for a cause have been inspiring for me. Today when I feel inundated by the world, I look back and think of the protagonists that went against the flow, offered resistance when their peers spoke of complacence. This novel for me is about courage and honor, understanding what is right and fighting for it. I look forward to ordering it here and reading it again, ten years later.
David vs Goliath-type Story.......2007-03-09
Great story about the Jewish resistance movement in World War II. Although, the characters are fictional, Uris, is such a gifted artist, that he makes you care about them, as they simply struggle to survive on a handful of bread or a handful of bullets. The soap-opera-style of bouncing back and forth between the main characters works because it only strenghtens the drama and builds the tension. Also, the characters are not cookie-cutter good or bad stereotypes; there are many shades of ethics and motivations among the Jewish resistance, the Nazis, the Poles, and the general population.
Although it is a fictional account, the events depicted were real. And it does make one think - had I been thrust into a similar situation, how would I react?
Mila 18.......2006-09-28
Mila 18 is the most fabulous story of courage and daring I have ever read. I have read it over and over again during the years, and with each reading I can't put it down. I have long studied the Holocaust, and the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in particular, and Leon Uris's Mila 18 could be used as a textbook on the subject, so accurately is the history portrayed. If I could recommend one book, only one, to teach people about courage, honor, dignity, compassion, love -- this would be it. The brief raising of the Hebrew flag over that small territory made me cry as no sappy love story ever could. In this age of Hollywood filming epic historical movies such as The Patriot, Titanic, etc., etc., this book should be done on a grand scale. However, I would say in departing, that the movie Uprising, which I believe was a made for tv movie, is grander and more epic, more historically true, as well as every bit as thrilling, as any movie I've ever seen.

Good introduction to Degas.......2006-03-06
I purchased this for use with my children in their study of Degas. It was put together well and had some interesting activities. The poster to color was a hit with our family. I would caution the purchaser that both the book and the activity notebook have some "nude" sculpture...can't quite tell if the dancer is wearing a leotard or not but the impression was of a nude to my young boys. I would preview this before sharing if you are sensitive to that sort of thing.
Superb intro to the life and style of Degas.......2000-10-23
I used this book, along with the other's by Boutan, in my classroom in a huge unit on artists and their works. These book set each artist apart from each other with interesting details that you can't find in an average book. It makes it very easy for the children to pick out the artist's other works and a greater understanding and appreciation is achieved when the children try the techniques with the products enclosed! Learning and Fun! A+!

The neighborhood kids ages 3-12 were bored, I pulled this out & gave a 2 min presentation of the artist & we all created artwork in his style. I checked out a bigger book from the library of more artwork of his & showed it to them while they created. Every one of them still remembers his name & artwork style.. I"M buying the rest of them for spring break~
Be Matisse for a day.......2000-05-30
This is a wonderful book to get the children close to the artist. It gives a very clear overview of the author and the key features of his technique. It also offers a hand's on project for the children to become Matisse for a while. Simple instructions, a short and wonderful review on the artist's life and work make this book easy and enjoyable. My children (8 yr old, 5yr old and 3 yr old) and I had a smashing afternoon composing a work of art to show papa, grandma, and the teachers. I highly recommend this book and others in this series to introduce the artists to children. This is however my absolute favourite in this series.

Just like Boutan's other books, she does a wonderful job introducing an artists individuality to her reader. My students loved learning about Van Gogh's life and painting syle and were anxious to rey it out for themselves witht he materials included.

Do not Waste Your Money. Buy Construction Paper Instead........2001-10-18
What a dissapointment! The text is a boring compilation of well known facts. There is no instructional leflet on creating collages as has been claimed in the book description. The art set includes only 6 sheets of construction paper. Get Ernest Ruboff or Mike Venezia books to introduce children to the greatest artists. Boutan's book has no originality to it and should have not ever been published. I have ordered most of the books in Boutan's series of 'activity' books and will be returning all of them. Get a set of construction paper at a dollar store and do not waste your money. There are better choices.

This was a fantastic book! I shared it with my children (ages 7 and 10) and they both enjoyed it. It includes a biography of Picasso and also pictures of his work. It also includes a collage activity. This has been very helpful to me being a volunteer "Picture Lady" at the elementary school. I can share information about the artist and also share an art activity with the class. There are other artists in the Art Activity Pack Series as well. I have purchased all of them! They are perfect for sharing in a class or with your own children! Thanks for such a great series, Mila! My only question is, will there be more artists included in the series?

Great book to introduce children to the world of Monet. Beautiful review of the artist's life and his work, with emphasis on light, color and impressions. The author has you walking through the artist's work feeling the sensations he felt when he painted. This book is a wonderful way to see the world through Monet's eyes. My 8-year old and my 5-year old both enjoyed this book thoroughly.

Paul Mila has a homerun with this book. Anyone who is familiar with the Island of Cozumel will feel as if they are right in and a part of the story. As Paul took me from adventure to adventure, problem to problem...I recognized exactly where we were at that moment in Cozumel. The story itself is a great mystery and a wonderful love story.
I am ordering his sequal today, and looking forward to even more written by Paul Mila!

Terry Hunter and Mark Stafford met at UCSB where Terry was an undergraduate with a degree in Marine Science. Mark Stafford, tall, dark and handsome had obtained a scholarship to study Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology. The two hit it off right away. Three years later they are on a research vessel studying shark behavior. A Blue shark feeding frenzy turns nasty with the arrival of a Great White leaving Mark caught in the middle of the mayhem. Terry swims towards him in an attempt to save his life but to no avail. Now my kids love Cezanne.......2000-05-30
Once again Mila Boutan does a fantastic job with her art activity packs for children. I have ordered most of them and they all offer clear concise information of the author and his techniques aswell as fun proposals to draw immitating the artist's way. This is wonderful book to get the children up to date on Cezanne's still life and landscapes. The end project is really "Cezanne" like. Both my 8 yr old and my 5 yr old enjoyed the book very much.
