Book Description
All the women of the Bible offers a rich biographical perspective on evey female figure in scripture -- including the famous, the little-known, and even the unnamed. In more that 300 engaging and insightful portraits, Edith Deen brings alive the saints and sorceresses, queens and servants, mothers and daughters, wives and widows whose profound influence is felt through-out the Bible.
"You can almost trace light and darkness in the Bible by the women themselves,"she writes. "Hannah, praying mother of Samuel, gave birth to a son who became the first great Hebrew prophet. And, of course, there was the mother of Jesus. On the other hand, Jezebel and Herodias were vile influences, the first tearing apart the northern kingdom of Israel, the second causing John the Baptist to be beheaded."
Combining thorough detail with a lively and dramatic narrative, All of the Women of the Bible portrays the real women behind the Biblical stories and shows how, in their human struggles and triumphs, they are very much like the women of today. With each major biography identified by Bible chapter and verse and prefaced by a key passage of scripture, this is an ideal resources for teachers, Bible students, preachers, and writers, as well as anyone who wants to learn what it was really like to be a woman in Biblical times.

All of the Women of the Bible.......2007-02-08
The books came in good condition and arrived sooner than promised. We are using it as a group study, and though it was published years ago the contents do not get outdated, any more than the Bible. It makes these women come alive for us as real people.
Sheds new light on the Bible........2000-05-29
Women in the bible are often not a topic discussed in church or elsewhere. This book is a wonderful look at the ignored parts of the bible, (and I don't mean every book after Exodus). Women did participate in the bible and this book celebrates their accomplishments and gives them long overdue praise.
Invaluable, just a bit dated.......2000-03-23
This exhaustive work is invaluable to anyone who wants to know the stories of Biblical women better. I'm doing research on Biblical widows, and this book is the most accessibly organized sourced I've found. It was written in 1955, so don't be surprised if it's a bit dated stylistically & theologically. Still, it's valuable as a reference tool that may lead to you to deepened encounter with women of faith.
I wish more young people could absorb this book........1999-10-23
I think I have the the only signed copy of "Family Living in the Bible" because she was my aunt on my Grandmothers side. I saw Edith most weekends in Ft. Worth until I moved away to Houston. Edith was the sweetist/dearest and most (innocent, intellegent, complex) 70-80 year old woman you could ever meet and talk to. Unfortunatly, I think the family took her for granted. But the Church did not! And she left a large library of her lifes works with Texas Christian University. As with every family, life is complex in nature. (personalities, divorces blah!!! she never had to deal with this stuff that i knew of!!) Reading her works for me now are amazing because of it's simplicity but at the same time it's reality. I will never forget Edith, her amazing library when I was too young to appreciate it, and the wonderment of just wandering around her estate.
A concise work that leaves you amazingly satisfied........1998-04-27
Perhaps it is due to the age and place in which I was raised--the 70s and 80s in Europe and Washington DC--or perhaps it is simply who I am, but my interest in the Catholic Church and the Bible itself has had its ups and downs. Whenever my interest in the Church and the Bible was awakened, however, it was due to interest in the writings of the Bible.
Whatever the initial reason that my interest in the Bible was inspired, however, I always read about the same topic: women and, in particular, the heroic women who were respected and revered by their husbands, families, and/or nations. I wanted to find women to emulate.
This book is the best I have read on the subject of women in the Bible. Deen's work remains concise, while she makes you feel as if you know each character as a woman and as a part her place in history. Then, after writing these evocative passages, she has useful appendices such as an alphabetical listing of each woman who is named in the Bible and a brief description of each, a listing of women according to their station in life, a bibliography, and an incredibly in-depth index. This is a book that you will refer to throughout your life, whether you are looking for an interesting story, you want to learn about the age these women lived in, or you simply need inspiration. No matter your need, this book can fulfill it.

Garbage.......2007-09-15
If you're looking for factual information about the women in the Bible, this book will not provide it. Instead it's a compilation of personal fantasies of someone named M.L. del Mastro (not identified anywhere in the book) geared to justify the poor treatment of women in the Bible. The stories have no basis in fact. They create circulstances, as if the writer was the woman's relative, who had a license to make up any history of choice. They're written like children's stories and contain chauvinist, Christian fundamentalist bias that is outrageously blatant. This book is garbage. If this review could have been posted with NO
stars, I would have done so, but the computer program would not permit it
Believe me, this garbage.
Misogynistic romanticized garbage.......2006-11-24
I only read the story of the concubine in Judges 19-20 and that was enough! Del Mastro not only does not stay true to the text but his or her fictionalized rendition reads more like an account of the Hindu practice of sati. That is an old custom, (One of the most notorious cases involving an 18 year-old woman named Roop Kanwar took place in 1986.) now outlawed, in which a widow joyously throws herself onto her husband's funeral pyre because she is nothing without her husband and her sacrifice is supposed to bring good fortune to her family.
In Del Mastro's account the concubine (pilegesh is the Hebrew word and it means a lesser wife) is portrayed as spoiled, willful and aberrantly ungrateful for her role as a servant wife. Her sagacious grandmother gives her a lecture about the evils of being full of pride, accepting her lot in life with alacrity, and the true meaning of honor. The Levite, her common-law husband/master and the Ephraimite host, the men who eventually toss her out to the mob to be gang raped and murdered, are portrayed as good-hearted men faced with an unbearable decision. In summary, this chick gets what she deserves. Del Mastro, however, offers an element of redemption. As the concubine is being thrown to the wolves she has an epiphany: If she hadn't been such an ingrate and left her wonderful husband in the first place she wouldn't be in this dire situation. Now she can redeem herself by saving her husband's butt---literally.
The morning after when she crawls up to the door and dies the Levite speaks to her with gentle concern. This does not jibe with the Biblical text. Moreover, "get up. Let us go." is the only line he speaks to her in the Biblical narrative. Keep in mind the Levite speaks to his servant and ask his advice. The fictional story ends here, but I couldn't help wondering: When he hacks up her corps does he do it "gently"?
Someone else already mentioned this, but I think it's worth reiterating, M.L. del Mastro's gender is unknown as there is no author biography in the book. What I should have known is that there was a reason this piece of schlock was on the markdown table. If you are seriously interested in learning more about women of the Hebrew Bible I suggest the authors: Tikva Frymer-Kensky, Nehama Aschkenasy, Jacqueline E. Lapsley, Phyllis Trible, Gayle Yee, Athalya Brenner, Joseph R. Jetter, Jr., Karla Bohembach, and Alice Bach. These authors all give scholarly accounts, taking into consideration historical context and the semantics of the original Hebrew text. Puns are virtually impossible to translate from one language to another. There are also several Hebrew words in the original text that have double or triple entendres. As always start with the Bible first. By the way, I am not opposed to Biblical fiction. I have reviewed some works that I thought were pretty good.
Poorly written and goes well beyond "historical fiction".......2006-05-19
This book is the worst sort of tripe. I have have no problem with true historical fiction, where one takes the *known facts* and expands upon them by imagining what else the main characters might have felt or said. I also love to get additional context and perspective to help illuminate and amplify key points of a story.
But that's a far cry changing facts entirely. It's particularly annoying when it comes to rewriting scripture. For example, in the story of the about-to-be-stoned-adultress, where Jesus says, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." the author of this book starts with a long introduction suggesting that the woman was single, was tricked by a married man who told her he loved her, that the man was paid by the Pharisees to convince her of his love and to seduce her, and that she didn't even know he was married.
Good grief! To what end? That's ridiculous. If you want to emphasize the gross unfairness toward women (vs. men) in a given situation in that culture, speculate away on what an adultress and the other characters would say and think. No need to change the facts to try and make the woman a more sympathetic figure.
And, please, please, please, do not write every story in the voice and style of a second-rate romance novelist. Ugh. To the recycle bin with this book.
The subject matter counts.......2005-05-11
To the reader who was SHOCKED by the author's treatment of biblical subjects involving women: do you allow your children to read the Bible at all? If you do, and if they ask you why it has so many stories involving the mistreatment of women, how do you answer?
The Bible is a product of its time. The work in question is a classical study of the treatment of women in the Bible. It's not reading matter for most children; neither is it a suitable work for children to learn about the role of women in the Bible.
This work is a serious attempt to treat the tales written about women in the Bible in a style of "historical fiction," taking the viewpoint of a narrator of the action. The result is an enlightening vision of a society where, for the most part, women were property with a status of just below slaves. In reading the Bible, one is struck by how the authors uniformly take for granted the typical lack of status possessed by women. Women were not typically written about in favorable ways. Indeed, the only reason for the mention of Dinah, Jacob's daughter, is her rape by the son of the ruler of the neighboring town. The reader is then truly astounded, after reading further about the lowly status of women, to learn that the ancient Hebrews subsequently built protections for women into their laws and customs, thus rejecting the treatment of women by all of their surrounding cultures.
It is with this viewpoint that one should approach the reading of this work. It retells the tales of the Bible of events that occurred in everyday life in the ancient cultures of the Near East in terms with which a modern reader can identify, and in so doing, exposes the horrors of a woman's life during those times. It was the rejection of womens' subjugation and lack of any legal status that the Hebrews, and later, Israelites, sought; the result was a code of law (in Leviticus, primarily) that gave protections to women unheard of and unimagined in neighboring cultures.
This is what the book is about, and women can rejoice in its telling. This is a serious book. It's not a book for kids.
An Unbiblical View.......2005-01-10
I saw this book in the store and the title got my attention, as I am always looking for more material on women in the Bible. However, as I sat down to read through it, I realized that the author -- and we don't know if it's a male or female -- writes with a punishing view. In the story of Jepthah's Daughter, for instance, the daughter is portrayed as quietly accepting her fate, and she is upheld for that decision. In the story of the Concubine in Judges, the re-telling is written in such a way as to suggest that if she had listened to her mother and not complained about her husband, she would not have been raped, murdered and dis-membered.
This is a dangerous book for anyone with a serious bent to study the Bible; it is especially dangerous to our daughters.
PLEASE! Do not buy this book.

Great & Inspiring!!.......2007-02-03
This book is definitely a must for any woman! As a child of God, it has helped to see many areas in my life that needs some work, and not in a finger pointing manner. It uses accurate scripture, and where you need the work, God shows you. I am only half way through this book and have loved every single lesson! This is highly recommended! And to be honest, I was very skeptical at first. The Bible tells us how we should be to glorify God and to be a Godly woman. Through this study it is even all the more plain! There is much lack of value in the world today, and the way women gossip, back-stab, show unloyalty whether it be in friendships, work, or marriages, and have much unhappiness in their homes as a wife and mother is a shame, this book is showing me how to be a better child of God, wife, mother, keeper at home, worker in my career, and friend. I wish more women would read this and learn from it!!
Great Bible study guide & personal growth tool.......2005-05-27
In this great book, the author guides the reader through a brief examination of the life and character of selected women in the Bible. It's great for small group or individual study (targeting female audience), and calls for honesty and application in one's own life. It's appropriate for new believers and Christians who are looking for refreshment and rededication in the walk with Christ. It's enjoyable and insightful. Too bad it's out of print, apparently.
