Book Description
More than any other world leader in recent times, George W. Bush is a man of faith…a conservative Christian who has brought the power of prayer and the search for God's will into the Oval Office. His faith has proven to be a bedrock of strength and resolve during two of the most tumultuous years in our nation's history. According to
Newsweek magazine, "This presidency is the most resolutely faith based in modern times. An enterprise founded, supported and guided by trust in the temporal and spiritual power of God." David Aikman, skilled journalist and former senior correspondent for
TIME magazine, pens this dramatic and gripping account of Bush's journey to faith. Based on interviews and behind-the-scenes stories, you'll learn how…
- His life changed after a conversation with Billy Graham on the beach at Kennebunkport
- He walked away from alcoholism toward a new destiny
- The events following 9/11 caused many to view him as God's chosen man for this critical time in history
- His decision to go to war with Iraq became the ultimate test of his faith
A Man of Faith…an intimate look at how Bush's spiritual life has impacted his presidency, the nation, and the world.

President Bush: A great man of faith and a great President.......2007-02-26
I guess I am the only one that has actually read this book and the Bible. An unnecessary war? Maybe these people have been hiding under a rock. Or maybe they are just liberals that love to act like they have faith until they open their mouths and it becomes obvious they have no idea what they are talking about. Anyway, if you are a "true" Christian that actually reads and understands your Bible, you will enjoy this book. Thank God for President Bush. A great man of convictions, values, and morals. The rest of you - well you are cowardly traitors.
NOT ALL WHO CRY LORD LORD SHALL ENTER THE KINGDOM.......2006-10-24
A man of faith with the faith unspecified.
Back in the 1800's when his folks were in politics, they firmly believed the wrong side won the AMerican REvolution.
This book, written by a subject of the British throne reveals why Bush once again places us as peons and mercenaries for the british imperial crown.
Back in the 1800's the bush family joined Cotton MAther of Yale in burning landowners as witches in order to steal their profitable farms.
Now he demonizes the IRaqi nation and kills an estimated million of them to steal their oil fields
Nothing new under the sun. Only do not call it faith
FAith in the gun, maybe.
Saint JAmes writes even the devil believes in God and shudders in fear.
Faith without good works is nothing.
By their fruits will you know them.
Bush's fruits stink to high heaven.
For a faith with good works read a theologian like the REverend Father John Dear's Jesus the rebel, and learn why every Christian faithful and true must firmly oppose George W Bush.
By the way, this piece of partisan politicizing which helped steal our 2004 elections by deceiving countless well-intended but eagerly gullible people is now going for fourteen cents.
Bush has strong faith.......2006-05-04
in the right of the rich to get richer, while the poor get poorer and the middle class treads water. Re his targeted tax cuts: 53 per cent to the wealthiest 2 percent.
in the importance of corporate welfare. Heavy tax subsidies for the energy industry and no bulk purchasing of meds for the elderly. Bulk purchasing would decrease the cost for the elderly, but drive down profits for big pharma.
in the exemption of himself from the commandment not to bear false witness. Every time Bush calls the war in Iraq part of the war against terror he lies. Even he has admitted there were no connections between Saddam and 9/11.
Bush's stance on conservation (relaxed controls of air and water pollution) is also at odds with the biblical teaching that God has made us stewards of the earth.
Measured against the teachings of Jesus, Bush's faith amounts to empty words for photo ops. One can cry, "Lord, lord" and not please the Lord. Jesus had a word for those whose deeds are empty of the faith they profess: hypocrites.
Useful corrections to the errors in this book are to be found in Kevin Phillips, American Theocracy and Bruce Bartlett, Impostor. Even better correctives are to found in the gospels: Bush approves of torture, capital punishment, and the amassing of wealth. All things that Jesus despised.
Hmmm.......2006-04-20
Who would Jesus bomb? Who shall we bomb next in the name of Jesus?
A man of faith? FAITH??? .......2006-04-14
Judging by the pathetic mess George W. Bush has made of the USA and Iraq during the last five years, the masses of people he's killed through his phony wars, and the negative feelings he's engendered in so many countries around the world, one has to wonder WHAT exactly IS his "faith"? Surely it isn't Christianity...anyone with half a brain who knows anything about Jesus' message (non-violence and tolerance, for those without a clue) can see that Bush has violated nearly every tenet of Christianity during his life and especially during his "presidency".
What IS Bush's "faith" exactly? It's his faith in his own self-righteousness...faith in his corporate buddies to bail him out of any hole he digs for himself...faith in the ignorance of so many so-called "Christian" folk to support his ignorant, misguided leadership. That's what Bush's "faith" is. It sure ain't in the actions and teachings of Jesus Christ.

Book Description
In the wake of the 2004 election, pundits were shocked at exit polling that showed that 22% of voters thought "moral values" was the most important issue at stake. People on both sides of the political divide believed this was the key to victory for George W. Bush, who professes a deep and abiding faith in God. While some fervent Bush supporters see him as a man chosen by God for the White House, opponents see his overt commitment to Christianity as a dangerous and unprecedented bridging of the gap between church and state. In fact, Gary Scott Smith shows, none of this is new. Religion has been a major part of the presidency since George Washington's first inaugural address. Despite the mounting interest in the role of religion in American public life, we actually know remarkably little about the faith of our presidents. Was Thomas Jefferson an atheist, as his political opponents charged? What role did Lincoln's religious views play in his handling of slavery and the Civil War? How did born-again Southern Baptist Jimmy Carter lose the support of many evangelicals? Is George W. Bush, as his critics often claim, a captive of the religious right? In this fascinating book, Smith answers these questions and many more. He takes a sweeping look at the role religion has played in presidential politics and policies. Drawing on extensive archival research, Smith paints compelling portraits of the religious lives and presidencies of eleven chief executives for whom religion was particularly important. Faith and the Presidency meticulously examines what each of its subjects believed and how those beliefs shaped their presidencies and, in turn, the course of our history.

Depth, Accuracy, and Perspective.......2007-02-22
Even though tomes have been written on the American presidents, Dr. Smith manages to bring fresh insight as a result of painstaking research. ( It could serve as a model for any student looking to document his research) The book is not "light" reading....but the author writes with clarity and with as much impartiality as humanly possible. I found his distinction between the ways that these presidents' faith shaped their policies to be thought-provoking. This book provides a strong framework from which to examine the coming election season.
Layperson and Lover of Presidental History .......2007-02-18
I encourage you to set aside a block of time each day as you loose yourself in the history and faith of each of these men. It is full of interesting faith facts that just a history of these presidents would never touch. I must confess it took me time to read and digest this book, but well worth the time. I look forward to reareading this book in order to grasp new facts that I did not glean from the first read. I would love to see it used in school class rooms everywhere. The research, notes and excellent writing of this work is outstanding!
Compelling, fascinating page-turner.......2007-02-12
A first-rate work in which eleven presidents are analyzed in terms of their religious beliefs and their actions. Solid framework of analysis. The work brims with new details, broad understandings, and sound and judicious conclusions. Impressive, varied bibliography. The copious notes, alone, are worth a close read. Sparkling writing and sound organization make this a page-turner.
A must read for 2007.......2007-02-10
If you are looking for fresh information about the role of faith and religion in the lives of some of America's greatest presidents then I highly recommend purchasing Faith and the Presidency.
The author, Gary Smith has done his homework. His research is very thorough and his style of writing is clear and free of technical jargon.
I thought the book presented a balanced view of democrat and republican presidents; and the author covers each president's religious affiliation without bias. After reading this book I finally understand why religion is such a hot topic during every presidential election.
Reading about Abraham Lincoln and how his faith helped him address the crises of the civil war is the best I have read to date.
Students, teachers of history, religious leaders and those with a love of presidential history need this book to complete their library. A must read for 2007!
Outstanding.......2007-02-08
Gary Scott Smith's Faith and the Presidency is fascinating to read and weighty in substance. Full of personal details drawn from the lives of various presidents as well as important observations about public policy and religious impulses, Smith hits the sweet spot between bold, exciting claims and strong supporting evidence.
I was particularly persuaded by the book's observation that the foreign policy of presidents more readily reveals their philosophical commitments because the U.S. presidency has greater latitude abroad than at home.
This is a book worth reading from cover to cover. Smith hits a home run with this exceptional book. A tour de force!
Book Description
"I feel like God wants me to run for president. I can't explain it, but I sense my country is going to need me. Something is going to happen and, at that time, my country is going to need me. I know it won't be easy on me or my family, but God wants me to do it."
So said then-Governor George W. Bush to a few trusted friends about the 2000 presidential race. As president, Bush has continued to bring his deep religious belief to his job-a fact that has delighted the nation's conservative Christians and distressed many others.
That Bush has appointed likeminded Christians to high posts-including Secretary of State John Ashcroft, who was once quoted as saying that America had "no king but Jesus"-has only fueled the controversy. So have Bush's support and funding of faith-based initiatives. And with his administration swearing to keep the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, a matter which the Supreme Court will take under consideration this fall, many are left wondering: Whatever happened to the separation between church and state?
But Bush's faith is an asset to his presidency and not a weakness, argues Stephen Mansfield in his provocative new book, The Faith of George Bush. In this spiritual biography of the president, Mansfield shows that Bush uses his faith to help him be a better leader (and man and husband and parent) without allowing it to dictate policy decisions. Said his close friend, Commerce Secretary Don Evans: "It gives him a desire to serve others and a very clear sense of what is good and what is evil."
With anecdotes that are both inspiring and eye opening, Mansfield traces the arc of Bush's spiritual (and not-so-spiritual) life from his childhood to the present:
*The religious influences of his parents, George, Sr. and Barbara.
*His academic difficulties at Andover and Yale, which may have been exacerbated by a possible learning disorder such as dyslexia.
*His aimless, decadent lifestyle after Yale, which consisted of driving around Houston in his Triumph, dating beautiful women, drinking, and partying.
*His future wife Laura, who introduced Bush to the Methodist church.
*A little-known meeting between Bush and evangelist Arthur Blessitt in 1984, which Bush has never spoken about publicly, which helped to define his commitment to Jesus and give shape to his previously shapeless, aimless life.
*Bush's famous walk with the Reverend Billy Graham in 1985, which led Barbara Bush to say, "George has been born again."
*How Bush's faith helped him to give up drinking.
*His first forays into politics: running for a Congressional District seat at age 31; working on his father's presidential campaign (where his faith helped him to resist the advances of an attractive young campaign worker and keep his family first and foremost); and winning the Texas gubernatorial race against Ann Richards, a victory which he owed to his beliefs and his outspoken views about religion.
*His appointments of cabinet members, top advisors, judges, and others, many of whom share his commitment to Jesus-and how that circle of faith helps him to help the nation.
*...and more.
The Faith of George Bush is a fascinating look at a man whose spirituality brought moral renovation to his life, set him free from his lesser self, and made him an extraordinary, complicated, and for some, controversial leader.
Customer Reviews:
Is Bush really a Christian?.......2007-08-05
Hey everyone. I'd like to talk about how, as a Christian, I feel that I have been used by George Bush. It's not my place to say whether or not Bush is really a Christian or not. But the Bible does say that you will know a person by their fruits, that is, you will know whether a person is bad or good by the things that they do.
The 2004 exit-polls showed that faith and religious beliefs were the sole winner determining factor in the election. Bush told everybody that he was a Christian and would be a Christian president and defend our beliefs and protect marriage but he hasn't done any of that really. Under his watch the Ten commandments were pulled out of a courthouse. Under his watch ga-ys and les-bians were married across the country. The only thing he has done in office was the War in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Now the war on terror is very complicated. It would be wrong to say that if we just left Iraq that Muslims would become peace loving allies and everything would return to a utopia-like past that never really existed. Something has to be done. But the war in Iraq has made no sense form the beginning. If we are at war why aren't we fighting it like a war. Why are our soldiers over there standing around waiting to be blown up like sitting ducks?
In the mean time it's politics as usual in our country as the Democrats and Republicans take any opportunity they can to bad mouth the other and say how perfect their party is. Bush alone isn't tearing America apart, all politicians are. They are all corrupt as far as I can see. When an all-powerful oligarchy has taken over the countries political system what hope does democracy have? When both candidates in an election are members in a strange fraternity organization, Skull and bones, who are we supposed to vote for? A third party candidate that is probably no better and has no chance of winning?
This book was probably just another publicity campaign tool meant to make Christians think they should vote for Bush because he was on our side. But who were we supposed to vote for? John Kerry? Ha! Al Gore? Double Ha! In hindsight I would have to had voted for a third party candidate and thrown away my vote.
Well, at least we know that whoever we vote for, we're going to get a lying crook.
Fairly factual but biased..........2007-06-07
This book is basically a biography of Bush's life from a more religious perspective. In it they compare how Bush's beliefs supposedly shaped his life.
While the book seems truthful it leaves out alot of facts. It does not mention the scadals going on at the time or screw ups he had made.
The other problem is that the book is dated as it was released pre his reelection. The author might be writing a totally different book about how religion screwed up his presidency with the scandal and blunders hes in now.
In the end it was a decent read thoug for facts i would rather stick to a less biased source. As i said this author seemed very much like a buddy of Bush's putting a book out for him.
But does he go to church?.......2007-03-07
It apparently doesn't strike people as odd that Bush does not belong to a congregation and rarely goes to any church. Too busy? He spends more time on vacation than any President in history. Too disruptive? Carter not only attended a Washington Baptist church every Sunday, but taught Sunday school. Bush isn't alone; Reagan didn't attend church while President, either.
BY THEIR FRUITS YOU SHALL KNOW THEM.......2006-10-16
The faith of George Bush is in what? Money? Oil? His dad?
My Lord said Love thy enemy and do good to those who harm you
Not kill a million iraqis for oil fields
My Lord said it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven
Not give all our national treasury and indebtedness to the wealthiest corporations while impoverishing our people and leaving our elderly and infirm to drown in a rainstorm
My Lord said Blessed are the peacemakers
not those who keep changing their lies about going to war.
What is his faith again?
My Lord said: Not all those who cry Lord, Lor shall enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
My Lord said it. I believe it. Case closed.
What his faith all about?
Material possession does not prove election anymore than faked vote counts
SEll all that you have and give the money to the poor and then come follow me, said the Lord, and you will have riches in heaven.
Blessed are the POOR reads his Sermon on the MOunt in Saint Luke
Anyway what's that cover photo supposed to be? Mr. Jim Beam make him nauseous again? Or does he hang his head in shame for the one million dead for their oil fileds in Iraq? FOr our stolen elections? For the dead of KAtrina? For murdering our US Consitution and Bill of Rights? No, it's gas. Hoping no one notices he cut it. No, looks like he's controlling a leak into his Depends.
Excellent reading for those who have faith in God.......2006-09-20
The book can give inspiration on how our President runs the country by the guidance of God. Following God's guidances doesn't need to be popular and he knows this. The most important thing is to do everything as what the Bible says. It's true that no one is perfect, not even ourselves. We are not supposed to judge him as we do not want to be judged either. Let God Himself judge him as He will judge all of us.
Book Description
This remarkable compilation gives you portions of every address Bush has given in public life about faith in God, his commitment to life and freedom, patriotism, and his hope in the American people.
Customer Reviews:
Let's review the BOOK and not the President.......2007-10-01
It's kind of amusing that people have reviewed the book and probably never read it. They just see that Bush wrote it and gave it one star. People must have really sad lives when they get pleasure of giving a bad review for the book because they don't like Bush.
He does have a very strong faith and the book is a good read. I would tell anyone to read it unless they are a closeminded liberal who can't see past politics and read a book.
Makes Jesus Look Like Gheghis Khan.......2006-06-23
Wonderful book written by a half blind emancipator of people, Bush tells the history of his clan, which is said to be a roving tribe of yokels from Nuthrembra that somehow found its way to a small town in the middle of nowhere.
In this book he reveals that he had fantasies about a flying contraption out in his home town of Marfa Texas, that he fostered an "angry" attitude at his imaginary pet, and that he was once said to be the son of a witch doctor named Klaus. In a remarkable passage he also speaks about how he was touched by god after stumbling upon a discarded piece of trash in a dumpster near a train track after a drunken binge. I almost wept at his confession.
He then goes on to state how he became interested in politics, after being sent to prison for a check fraud charge, and intervening between two angry convicts fighting over toothpicks. Preaching the word of the lord was his business in jail, where he gained a few converts, namely crooked, rough nose scalawags and oil execs. After numerous failed jobs, brushes with the law and ordinary day jobs (including selling broken eggs), his father ushered him into the state race at Texas where he won by the hand of Jesus. Never had Texas seen so much amiable additions to the wall at the State capital until he took office, it is said to this day a portrait of "Tabrutha", his aunt, is still on the wall.
He quotes passages from the bible that I didn't even know existed and his speeches are humbling. A wonderful read, created by think tanks and bible bumping bumpkins, influenced by the hand of god himself, I suggest you pick this up along with some beer at the local Wal-Mart and have your head examined after reading it because it is so spiritually enlightening.
Bush probably reads the 5 star reviews and laughs at your gullibility.......2006-05-29
Would'nt it be a better world if this nut actually followed the teaching of Jesus? Just think about the people in New Orleans. When they were starving and their city was under water little Bush was on vacation. On the other hand Jesus fed, and cured the poor.
I understand why people think he is tough on terror if you watch the nightly news. The truth is far from the news you see everynight.
The majority of the 9-11 families along with member's of the CIA, scholars, respected politicians in other countries as well as millions of americans know that 9-11 was carried out by our own govt. ( see my reviews for the books,The New Pearl Harbor, and 9-11 Inside Job)
Now I dont want to give little Bush the credit for this because we all know he probably cant even tie his own shoes.
Informed people know that the president really has barely no power at all. The country is really run behind the scenes. He is just a PR man speaking for a currupt Oligarchy that has fooled us into believing we live in a democracy. I know you are laughing, but think about this for a second.
Over 90% of americans are against sending our jobs and industry overseas.
Over 90% would like our borders to be secure.
And nearly everyone wants the oil barons to stop price gouging are fuel.
If we lived in a democracy we would have our way.
Their is real proof that the bush family supported the Nazi's before, during, and after ww2. (namely Prescott Bush, and George Herbert Walker)
Bush is not really a pro lifer. At home he talks the talk. However the Bush family(as well as other presidents have supported population control in other countries) He only uses religion to fool people into voting for him.
He also is a member of Bohemian Grove, and Skull and Bones. Both of these institutions have large ties to the occult.( so much for him being a christian)
And on a funny note He leaked National Security Information to a gay prostitute( Jeff Gannon)
Now we know what he means by Mandate. LOL
I hope I didnt offend anybody, We all really need to wake up. It doesnt matter if we are Right or left, Christian or Atheist. They are not looking out for any of us.
If not next time there is a major terror atack we will go running to little bush so that he can protect us by taking away our freedom of speech, by more domestic spying, by a martial law police state. Than he will be the dictator that he said he wishes he could be. We will be cannon fodder so that he can invade more countries. You will wish you paid better attention. It will be too late for all of us.
not "rarely" but FREQUENTLY goes to church.......2006-05-22
No matter what you think about this President, or that his opinion may differ from yours...one cannot say (as a review recently did) that this man "rarely goes to church." In respect for the President... and people protecting him... I will say that when the prez is in D.C. (more weeks out of the year than he is not) he goes to church...how do I know this? I have been there, worshipping with him.
I cannot tell you what is in his heart when he is praying or taking communion...just as he cannot tell you what is in mine...or any of us guess what is in yours.
I may not have voted for the guy...but we do our country a better service to disagree with respect than to paint each other as inhuman.
I used to hate it, when visiting Evengelical churches to hear Clinton referred to as the "devil," and on that same vein refuse to brand anyone else like that.
With that, we all have the right, especially as Americans, to have our opinions and expres those, but I feel we all do our country a better service by respecting all of God's children...all of us.
As a Christian, I found this book offensive.......2006-03-05
and I think it might be banned from the public libraries where children might get a hold of it.
How a man who rarely goes to Church, started a preemptive war, and cuts funding for programs for the weakest and poorest among us has ever gotten the reputation for being a "good Christian" is one of the greatest mysteries of the milennium. Maybe it is because he said God "talks to him" and told him to start the Iraq war? Regardless, this book is either an awesome satire on the false piety of our president, or is the most obvious piece of propaganda nonsense around. You decide - but don't look for it in your public library, because it may have been banned.
Book Description
George W. Bush had planned to swear his oath of office with his hand on the Masonic Bible used by both his father and George Washington, however, due to the inclement weather, a family Bible was substituted. Almost immediately on taking office, President Bush made passage of "faith-based initiatives"--the government funding of religious charitable groups--a legislative priority. However, "inclement" political weather storm-tossed his hopes for faith-based initiatives as well.
What happened? Why did these initiatives, which began with such vigor and support from a popular president, fail? And what does this say about the future role of religious faith in American public life? Amy Black, Douglas Koopman, and David Ryden--all prominent political scientists--utilize a framework that takes the issue through all three branches of government and analyzes it through three very specific lenses: a public policy lens, a political party lens, and a lens of religion in the public square.
Drawing on dozens of interviews with key figures in Washington, the authors tell a compelling story, revealing the evolution of the Bush faith-based strategy from his campaign for the presidency through congressional votes to the present. They show how political rhetoric, infighting, and poor communication shipwrecked Bush's efforts to fundamentally alter the way government might conduct social services. The authors demonstrate the lessons learned, and propose a more fruitful, effective way to go about such initiatives in the future.

Critical and even-handed case study of how politics come to be..or not.......2005-10-05
This even-handed tome provides clear-eyed research on what was to be the hallmark of the George W. Bush presidential administration: 'faith-based initiatives'.
During the 2000 presidential campaign, in an effort to (particularly) win votes from religious conservatives and economic conservatives, then-Texas Governor George W. Bush argued that the government could save it's money by contracting with religious institutions to provide social services.
Using scholarly data, the authors examined how a legislative objective is first proposed but can then be subsequently altered by many other factors.
With terrorism and Iraq the administration's new buzz words, does the White House Office for Religious Initiatives and Outreach even have enough money and resources to implement its related policies as the supporters of this project had initially envisioned?
In government, having appropriate funding levels for a project and/or office is everything. An idea sounding initially good and workable can subsequently morph into a veritable nightmare (and become cited by the public as 'government failure') when it lacks enough implementation resources.
Such an environment is ironically what supporters of the faith-based initiatives have cited as their evidence for the 'practical' successes of faith-based social services.
However some opponents (including religious clergy themselves) have argued back that religious institutions becoming entangled in the government's economic environment means that churches then loose the specific reason why their own programs had worked in the past sans the government partnership. Becoming subject to the same forms of bureaucracy, these organizations then cannot work exactly as they had in the past.
Faithful Scholarship.......2005-07-13
This meaty work is written for upper level college and graduate students who want a thorough understanding of how the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives came to be. It is written by a trio of political science professors from the most academically rigorous Christian colleges in the U.S. - Wheaton, Trinity and Hope College and published by Georgetown Press - a solid scholarly minded university publisher. These badges of authority are assurance that the work is academically worthy and not a polemic for or against Christianity.
The authors, all with experience in the Capital, focus roughly on the two year period beginning at the 2000 presidential elections. The narrative begins with the stated desire of Candidate Bush to make it much easier for religious service organizations to access federal funds - and at a level that secular organizations have done for decades. President Bush worked at passing such a bill on the Hill, but as the authors describe so well, the final result was something so meager that it satisfied nobody. And no-one could have predicted for how long 9/11 would move all domestic issues to the background. Figuring out how to help little churches keep former prisoners out of jail just couldn't compete with the endless loop of the Trade Towers collapsing...The White House, in the end, took its ball and went home to play. It opened up an office within the White House and among many of the Cabinet branches. Here, the White House salvaged what it could of the concepts and implemented the program changes that it could by fiat. Much of these centered on making grant processes more intelligible and accessible to small religious groups that barely have the funds to keep the lights on - let alone have a skilled grant writer on staff .
The same events are examined "...through three lenses: a public policy lens, a political party lens and a lens of religion in the public square." This provides a sophisticated look at motivations of the parties involved which appears to be at odds with the press accounts of the time. The authors do not shy away from analyzing the racial issues surrounding faith-based initiatives. Nor do they avert their scholarly gaze from the leaders of the white conservative Christian community. Pat Robertson, a graduate of Yale Law School and himself a founder of a law school, is revealed through his own words, as a supporter of legislation that would make Christianity the legally favored religion in the United States.
The complex constitutional interpretations relating to faith-based initiatives are examined thoroughly with equal attention given to all views. The sometimes abstruse analysis is well complemented with sidebars on items ranging from short bios of key players, the significance of certain memos to a spotlight on regional Faith-Based conferences put on by the White Office.
There are extensive footnotes and a huge bibliography - about 300 entries. The index appears to be thoroughly done with every proper name of a person, law, or organization included that would be expected. There are three appendices: the interview methodology, list of interviews (41), and executive orders affecting faith-based policies 2001-2002. There is also a list of cases cited (24).
The politics behind the Bipartisan Faith Based Initiative........2004-06-13
This book is a wonderful report on the role faith based groups play in our nation. It also shows that faith based initiatives reach across party, denominational, ethnic, and religious lines. The history of faith-based groups in our country is a long one indeed--that has always seen positive support. Whether you're a Democrat, Republican, or don't care--this book is for you. It shows that faith based initiatives benefit the whole of America, not just the religious right. Let us continue to support the great tradition of civic religion that has helped make this country great. May God bless America.

Book Description
Upon assuming office in January 2001, President George W. Bush immediately launched a national debate about the importance of religion in American public life. In establishing a White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, the President pledged to elevate the role of religious groups in confronting the nation's most difficult social problems.
God, Government and the Good Samaritan describes how the initiative could overturn the secular assumptions of government welfare while forging a new partnership between church and state. It explains why the President's plan has generated not only great criticism, but also great risks.
In a searching assessment of the faith-based initiative, God, Government and the Good Samaritan explores the promise of the President's agenda, frankly faces its dangers, and recommends a bold course for reform.
