This author's books have proven practicle and invaluable over the years.
This was my first and most recent purchase.
I shared and then gave the earlier volume to a friend.
You may gain as wide or narrow insight as your demands dictate.
How and why do things work and how your needs may be met.

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2006-11-05

I'm finding this book quite interesting. It offers new ideas on health and holistic nutrition that conventional medicine hasn't explored. On the other hand, I felt it needed to include more scientific research and back up more of his comments and eliminate the "I think" ones - somehow one's feelings seem more appropriate to express in humanities subjects and not on nutrition.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book.......2006-06-25

I've been experimenting with orthomolecular nutrition for several years, and found Dr. Haas' book to be an invaluable resource. He gives ample information about each vitamin, mineral, etc. including deficiency and toxicity symptoms. It has been a very useful book.

This beautiful book makes the lushness and luxury of two of today's most acclaimed interior designers accessible and practical for readers at home. With clients from Vera Wang to Tina Turner singing their praises, Stephen Sills and James Huniford, of Sills Huniford Associates, have written the ultimate guide to creating a beautiful home. Every aspect of style is addressed in clear language detailing the basic lessons of design. Their unmatched understanding of atmosphere, color, and design is brought to life in stunning and never-before-seen color photographs that prove both inspiring and practical. 1 out of 5 stars "Shallow & Vacant" doesn't begin to describe it .......2006-04-21

These designers have a great gimmick going. Basically, they travel around the world, hoarding antiques, ship them back to NYC and have cheap Mexican labour refinish them. They then charge foolish, rich clients (the ONLY people they'll work for) exorbitant prices for shoddily refinished junk. The reason the book seems "shallow & vacant" is because it's a direct reflection of the designer's personalities. Their designs are more stage settings than ones for living in. They manage to pull the wool over most clients eyes, but, they have been sued when their scheme was discovered and had to drastically lower their prices as compensation. So, if empty, weirdly coloured interiors don't make you vomit, then buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars A must have .......2006-03-23

This is a divine book.
Sills and Huniford show in the pages of this book that they are America's premier decorators. Thier talent is so great and the understanding of how interiors can be elegant, refined, well edited and still very livable are beautifully portrayed in this pages. To have this as a reference and a cronicle of thier work is a treasure. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Don't listen to other reviews.............2006-01-06

This book is great!! From the text you actually learn something rather than just a bunch of boring pictures. The pictures are annotated with the designers comments- you can actually LEARN things from this book. It's not a pretty coffee table book ( thank god, do we really need another one of those?! ) but one which you can actually learns secrets to great design. One step above the beginers level. I would highly recommend this book!

4 out of 5 stars size is not important.......2005-04-07

Yes, many photos are small. However, all photos are beautiful. If you want to upholster your own headboard or want new and fascinating uses for MDF, look elsewhere. Maybe I am biased -- I don't read (or look at) decorating books to learn how to decorate. I look at them for color, balance, and proportion. Sure, there are ideas here. Subtle ideas. Quiet ideas. Lovely ideas. Not all rooms of color are orange (will this trend end)! Think of grey, watery blues, nut browns! Trading places does not tread here. As far as no dust cover, who needs it? I pet my book often. Not merely a decorating book, this is an art book. Enjoy! Don't just learn how to lay tile.

5 out of 5 stars I just HAD to add my two cents' worth, because..........2005-03-05

I was amazed by the polarity of the reviews for this book -- always a good sign, as long as the lengthier reviews are the negative ones. Having bought a copy for resale, the reviews below motivated me to heavily skim it, and here's the fat skinny as I see it.

These guys really are gifted professionals, whose approach melds formal principle with intuitive insight. Their advice taken piecemeal may read like mostly conventional wisdom, but there is a LOT of it packed into a small space. And their "writing about themselves" (hard to avoid, really) is how you get the Be-Here-Now feel of their process. This personal, casebook approach adds considerable vitality to the link between the layered and revealing text and the superbly composed interior photos.

No, the latter are NOT huge -- discernment is a mark of these designers, and the medium is as much the message here as with the design examples and text. The real learning comes Zen-like, in the space between the words and images -- that's why some readers "get it" and others (who tend to want concrete "how to" or big, flashy pix and divertingly original text) don't. Check out a library copy if you're in doubt as to whether you're this book's kind of person. Or just take the plunge, get humble and patient, and see what -- and how -- you can learn....

On the text: sure, we all know that the floor is the foundation of any room, furniture should be suitable, luxurious bathrooms will pamper you, wall surfaces offer lots of possibilities, and colors should harmonize but need not match. But then you come upon nuggets of concentrated utility, like their three (primordial) strategies for the use of color, and such interesting observations as, "When color is integral to the material -- stone, wood, metal -- it registers less strongly".

The authors' offbeat perspective surfaces here and there like a thread in a tapestry. They liken the floor to the "face" of a room -- then survey ten classic flooring materials in a sentence, list eight functions that floor designs can serve in two more, and rattle off a dozen points of practical wisdom about carpets -- all this being reflected in the accompanying pictures. You don't read this book so much as you mine it.

The use of many transitional pages with nothing but large-scripted aphorisms and chapter titles IS a tad on the indulgent side, but even here the whole can be more than the sum of the parts. "A room's function should be paramount in determining the way it looks" (4: Living in a Room), yet "The more defined a room's function is, the harder it can be to design" (8: Functional Spaces). "Be Here Now", gentle acolytes -- these dividers are really connectors as well, functioning on the rebound as subsumers of more practical wisdom than is apparent until you've done your homework. Read that text and get your eyeballs into those pix for a couple of iterations, grok the "tell `em then show `em" paradigm in play, and go to school on these guys!

In sum, "editing, function and order" are as masterfully displayed in every aspect of the layout as they are demonstrated to be essential to the design of a room. The book is multi-dimensionally gorgeous, inside and out -- quite the bonus, really (check out the super-classic "Billy Baldwin Decorates" by way of comparison, and see what I mean). You can display this coffee table gem with pride, for its fascinating Persian-Miniature style photos, discussion-provoking koan/cliches, sheer textural delight to the eye and hand, and for the delectation of your subtler friends....

Book Description

In recent years, mid-century modern furniture, glass, ceramics, and textiles have become hugely popular among those who appreciate the stylish contribution these pieces make to the contemporary home. Modern Retro will inspire you to create a look that combines modern classics by such visionaries as the Eameses, Bertoia, and Aalto with thrift-store finds and the best contemporary design. Created by modern classics dealer Andrew Weaving and design commentator Neil Bingham, with photography by Andrew Wood, Modern Retro is not about slavishly recreating a period feel. Instead, it shows how to take the best designs of the 1920s through 1970s and use them throughout your home in a relaxed and individual way, allowing you to make the most of the gloriously eclectic forms, colors, and patterns available.

3 out of 5 stars Inspiring and accessible.......2002-06-14

Since I already have a few 50-60's modern pieces in my home, I purchased this book to give me a better idea of what other items were out there. The designs have great style, but seem totally achievable. Using this book as a guide and source of inspiration you could decorate your home in a comfortable yet stylish manner. Some of the pieces they show are pricey, while others are probably inexpensive flea market finds. The author gives you enough information that you could go out into the flea markets and antique/second hand shops and make some sound purchase. It is a shame the book is less than 200 pages. I would have loved to see more.

5 out of 5 stars Expensive style without the costs!.......2001-12-30

This book is amazing. It teaches you to create a contemporary looking home, without the outrageous costs of designer furnishings. It tells you what to look for at thrift stores, and how to use what you already have. I would highly reccommend this book to anyone even just a little bit interested in design! It's truly great.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational book.......2000-11-15

For a book on home furnishings, this book certainly contains enough good pictures to get you inspired. It is also well researched and written and actually covers quite a lot of ground inspite of its rather small size at 144 pages. In fact, this book is so good, I only wish there was a bigger version of it, with even more wonderful examples of lovely interiors filled with retro furniture. This book covers interior styles from the Art Deco period to the 1970s. It does mention a little of the famous designers such as Noguchi, Eames, Nelson, etc., but its primary purpose is to teach you about how to achieve the modern retro look, with discussions on living rooms, kitchens, work rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, furniture, lighting and accessories. What I find particularly useful is the list of retailers specializing in original pieces of furniture, a list of retailers and manufacturers of modern re-issues, and a list of architects and designers whose work had been featured in the book. Be warned though, that the list consists mostly of companies in the United Kingdom. This book is definitely a good buy for enthusiasts of retro furniture.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Interior Designer Gives Thumbs Down.......2007-10-18

This book is not helpful for people serious about getting into the Fifties' look. Maybe OK for those who view it as a fad and have lots of money to spend on repros and authentic pieces at high end antique shops. It gives very little sense of real Fifties decorating and "look"; replaces stylistic information with a lot of weird photography angles; and is depressingly short of useful ideas. If you want to intersperse one or two 50s pieces in an otherwise contempory decor, this book might be helpful. I found it pitifully inadequate.

For serious Fifties afficinados or those who want genuine inspiration, I suggest instead 'Atomic Ranch: Design Ideas for Stylish Ranch Homes', by Michelle Gringeri-Brown, Gibbs Smith, Publisher, Layton, Utah, 2006.
Or 'Eichler: Modernism Rebuids the American Dream'.

Book Description

John Claypool had been a pastor for almost two decades, ministering to others who suffered through the loss of loved ones, when the loss came home with the death of his eight-year-old daughter. This book is the story of Claypool's own journey through the darkness, written through four sermons. The first was delivered just eleven days after his daughter's diagnosis of leukemia, the second after her first major relapse nine months later, and the third weeks after her death. The final sermon—a reflection on the process of grieving—was preached three years later.

With more than a million copies sold, Tracks of a Fellow Struggler is once again available in a hardcover edition, perfect for gift-giving, or for anyone seeking God's comfort in difficult times to read and cherish.

5 out of 5 stars Hope.......2007-01-16

We recently experienced the crushing feelings of extreme grief in the death of our 22year old son. Someone lent me this book because they had found solace and comfort in reading this book. They had also dealt with the death of a child. I found a lot of answers to help me deal with the grief and hopefully heal someday. The last two chapters helped me the most. They helped me find one of the elements that has been missing from my life in the past few months and that is "hope".

5 out of 5 stars Best book on grief I ever read.......2007-01-12

Mr Claypool used his own experiences of coming through the darkest night into the sunshine of a new day. Very easy to read and understand. I recommend it to anyone wanting to work through grief in a positive way.

5 out of 5 stars Life is a gift.......2006-11-29

Dr. Claypool's book has rescued more people from the depths of grief than any I can recommend. He lost his daughter and this book is four sermons he gave during her illness and then after her death from leukemia. Dr. Claypool himself died in 2005, so his teachings become that much more important to share. He leads the reader to understand that we are sad when we lose someone, but we are enriched by ever having known the person. His words truly are the light at the end of the tunnel -- for anyone who is lost in darkness. For yourself or for someone you care about -- read this book.

5 out of 5 stars So much help.......2006-10-08

I lost my husband in November 2005,even as I write this it doesn't seem
possible. I was given all the books on being a widow and all the platitudes about being in a better place,he's whole, he's happy....I didn't care, he wasn't here. Then I read this little book...John Claypool didn't need 200 pages to tell me what I needed to know...it was alright to
question God, I didn't need to accept that this was "Gods Will"...I could question, I could yell at God but ultimately everything is a gift...Using Job as his example he led me from despair to a measure of peace...I still hurt, a lot, but I try to remember that my husband was a gift, and I'm better for having him in my life. Mr Claypool has a gift for saying a lot in a little space...he lost his daughter and speaks from experience...he showed up in my life at the right time....this book is for the care of your soul.....Mr Claypool is a gifted, interesting writer and I look forward to reading more....

    Book Description

The story of the Sioux who moved into the Canadian-American borderlands in the later years of the nineteenth century is told in its entirety for the first time here. Previous histories have been divided by national boundaries and have focused on the famous personages involved, paying scant attention to how Native peoples on both sides of the border reacted to the arrival of the Sioux. Using material from archives across North America, Canadian and American government documents, Lakota winter counts, and oral history, Living with Strangers reveals how the nineteenth-century Sioux were a people of the borderlands. The Sioux made great tactical use of the Canada-United States boundary. They traded with the Métis of Canada-often in contraband goods such as arms and ammunition-and tried to get better prices from European traders by drawing the Hudson's Bay Company into competition with American traders. They opened negotiations with both Canadian and American officials to determine which government would accord them better treatment, and they used the boundary as a shield in times of warfare with the United States. Until now, the Canadian-American borderlands and the people who live there have remained a blind spot in Canadian and American nationalist historiographies. Living with Strangers takes readers beyond the traditional dichotomy of the Canadian and the American West and reveals significant and previously unknown strands in Sioux history. David G. McCrady is an independent historian living in Winnipeg.

5 out of 5 stars Another Weimar Era diary worth the read! .......2007-05-20

This is a pricey book [hardcover] but as I've said in other reviews, one of the ways to better know Franz Liszt in addition to the tomes written about him not the least of which is Dr. Alan Walker's monumental 3 volume biography which represents some 25 years in painstaking research, is through the eyes and hence perspectives of Liszt's Weimar students.

Hence, this diary by Carl V. Lachmund [1853-1928] and edited by Lisztian scholar Dr. Alan Walker serves to add to the Liszt literature as do the subsequently published diaries of other Liszt Weimar students, August Göllerich, Lina Schmalhausen, Amy Fay, Alexander Siloti and Arthur Friedheim. For researchers, the Carl V. Lachmund material is available in the original at the New York Public Library under the collection ID of JPB 92-1. Of note, and this from the NYPL collection itelf, [with full 'identification' contents of the entire collection [20 boxes] available online from the New York Public Library], "Lachmund was the only American [student] to ever have a testimonial letter from Liszt himself."

A word about prices! Various vendors will offer this book from time to time and the prices can vary widely sometimes exceeding the Amazon price and other times lower in price but keep in mind that when any item is ordered from an Amazon vendor [and please note, I've done plenty of business with Amazon vendors over the years generally with excellent results especially when tracking down hardcover editions which I prefer over soft cover editions although this particular book is 'only' in hardcover edition as far as I am aware], anyway, when dealing with Amazon vendors one must factor in individual vendor shipping costs as well as any possible state sales tax issues depending on your geographical location.

Back to the student diaries in general, keep in mind also that the remarks made by former Liszt students are wholly 'subjective' in nature and while they in fact, IMO anyway, add to the Liszt literature in general, comments about Liszt per se should not be interpreted as the proverbial 'last word' because it is not unlikely to have one student describe Liszt as an almost 'father figure' while another speaks of 'a taskmaster with sometimes rude criticisms' but much of this depends, again in my view and so stated therein, not necessarily "one of the master's bad moods" as quite possibly one of the student's 'bad moods' or indeed more blatant and repeated pianistic blunders!

This also addresses the matter of some folks believing Liszt merely 'gave piano lessons to those wishing to learn to play or at least play better beyond the novice level' [!] when in fact these were 'master classes' for those who knew the instrument very well and could equally and readily 'demonstrate' same not just to Liszt himself but his rather accomplished pupils as well. Sort of a built-in peer system so to speak where talent at the instrument was a 'given' albeit at the very get-go and well 'prior' to seeking out Liszt! Often, when the student began to hear the word "conservatory" coming from Liszt, well, it was time to RE-assess whether Liszt master classes was the appropriate forum for their pianistic abilities .. or lack thereof. The students themselves freely rendering such opinions and of course being rather protective of their own position in the pecking order of things. Even Weimar had its 'maximum capacity' as it were.

    5 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem.......2004-06-23

The only thing that disappoints me about this book is that so few people have read it. Van Willard's diaries are very different from most other Civil War accounts. They are extremely well written; I was surprised that he wasn't a well-known writer, considering the engaging text. Willard doesn't go into the minutiae of daily life, but presents an all-around account that is on a completely different level than other soldiers' diaries or letters.

You won't be disappointed with this book!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent first-hand account of the Civil War.......2001-09-25

Fantastic reading! One gets the feeling that you've just discovered a set of dusty old diaries written by your great-great grandfather. The only thing missing is the original quill pen writing and the smell of old paper! There is no mistaking this was written by a man who was there. The author was no ordinary soldier-he was obviously intelligent and well educated by the way he retained and portrayed so vividly the events and topics of the period. This is not a military history, although there is much historical fact recorded. He discusses not only the battles and life as a soldier, but also the current thinking of both the Union supporters and the rebellion supporters. The editors comments are helpful, often providing important relavent information and correcting historical mistakes. Not all of the text was written on the front lines. Much of it was written in recent retrospect, and probably with the help of other soldiers accounts; so it isn't entirely first hand. Nonetheless, it's as close to the original story one can get. The discussion of the battle scenes is detailed enough to evoke real empathy toward all who lived during the war, yet is sparing of any gory detail. I'm not a military buff. I'm a history buff. I enjoyed the reading for its originality. It puts you squarely back to the 1860's.

5 out of 5 stars View the Civil War from a Soldier's Perspective.......2001-06-22

This isn't just another Civil War soldier's diary; Van Willard wrote 5 complete journals or "books" during his enlistment with the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry. You will discover that Willard was a very insightful and educated fellow, as he offers his thoughts and opinions about the war, the south, slavery, immigrant troops, the Iron Brigade, officers and so forth. Viewing the war from his eyes offers the reader an entirely different perspective than what we are used to finding in other Civil War books and diaries.

I highly recommend this book for any civil war buff or for anyone interested in the finest regiment to ever leave the Badger State, Wisconsin's 3rd Regiment of Infantry Volunteers.!

I am AMAZED at how helpful the tips in this book are. Yes, it doesn't have nice photographs like many other books, but it gives short and easy tips for decorating. It is easy to read, understand and apply many of the concepts. This book actually turns out to be the one I reach for the most among all the interior design books in my collection. Don't judge this book by the photographs (or lack of it).

4 out of 5 stars Excellant, if difficult.......2007-09-19

As a director this was an excellant resource book, however my seamstresses found it next to impossible to figure out the patterns. It would take someone quite comfortable in making patterns. The directions are there and could be worked out with enough effort and trial. Still, as a resource it's great and was quite useful. The designs and details alone are worth the price.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-08-07

Good book for creating fashions of the era .And the price for each pattern was a price I could not pass up.I love the patterns and clothes of days gone past and this is no exception.

5 out of 5 stars well up to Frances Grimble's high standards.......2006-03-22

This book features patterns for dresses, skirts, shirts, jackets, underclothing (etc.) for the years 1905 and 1907-1909.
    It contains:
    20 (patterns) from 1905
    22 from 1907
    21 from 1908
    23 from 1909

This is a good book, well up to Frances Grimble's high standards. It contains many patterns but can also double as a sourcebook, since it contains many pictures of clothes from fashion plates. I would recommend buying it, but make sure to research these years to find out if you really want it. Remember, this is mid-late edwardian.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful pattern source.......2005-10-23

Being a costumer, I'm frustrated that there aren't enough "authentic" patterns, with the fine details that they had, being produced out there, except for the "Halloween-type" costumes. This is a great resource for patterns that have the look and period-correct construction techniques. Ms. Grimble has chosen some truly beautiful ones from real vintage patterns to include in her book. I haven't had a chance to learn how to scale the patterns up yet, but look forward to it.
