Customer Reviews:
Great Site Design Reference.......2004-04-21
I was a bit tentative when I started to use this text. The book has some minor editing problems, but if your desire is to really understand site design with an emphasis on drainage and grading plan design this text does the trick and does it well. I would recommend this book to any Jr. land development designer/engineer as a must have reference.
Great reference book!.......2004-02-06
This is a great book to have on your shelf. Kept referring to it for my Site Technology classes and I know I'll be referring to it in the future. I found it very helpful and clearly written. Would highly recommend it.
Thorough but Poorly Organized.......2003-11-03
Puchased this text to help review for the LARE exam. The text has all of the necessary information but is not layed out well. Illustrations are not located on pages where they are referenced in the text making it so that you have to flip back and forth across several pages to understand the text in relation to the examples.
The larger problem with the book is that the answers to Exercises are not given. You will have no way to determine if you are completing the problems correctly or not. The only way to find out will be to have them reviewed by another Landscape Architect or Engineer.
The text functions well as a reference for Landscape Architects to review formulas or storm water calculation techniques but if you are trying to use it for developing skills or for exam preperation I would not recommend it.
vertical curves.......2001-02-10
I am taking a class in site engineering. This book has helped me tremendously in a difficult study such as this. I would recommend this book highly. It is easy to read and understand, and the author has an extensive understanding of the subject matter. a must for all students of landscape architecture!

EXCELLENT Text.......2005-09-04
I took the class with 2 of the authors, and the text provided me an in-depth learning experience with the comparative government field.
Not worth it........2005-06-10
I found this book's literal weight significantly greater than its intellectual weight. No where in the book does it ever give ANY definitions for the vocabulary words, most of which are unique to politics; one cannot even glean a hint of a definition from context. The book was written by different authors, some of whom were worth reading, but mostly not. The chapter on England had such horrendous grammatical and spelling errors, I couldn't keep reading it (I have no idea how it is in its eighth edition). Most of the book used casual phrases for the lay person but never gets into the specifics of what I need to learn about the functioning of international politics. The book was awful. Had I not wanted to recoup some of my wasted money, I would have covered every page in red ink and sent it back to the publishers for proof reading. It was extensive, but never really got to the core of the topic.
Book in good condition.......2002-10-10
Received the book right away and book was in good condition.
Upper level text with a wide array of countries.......2002-02-14
This book stands apart from the other comparative pol. books because of its lengthy introductory unit (almost 150 pages in 7 chapters). Some of it is very deep analytical material which is appropriate for very advanced students, but most high school readers will die of confusion if boredom doesn't finish them off first.
For the country chapters, they are very thorough, and each is 40-50 chapters, quite a lot of material. It's pretty dense, too. One good thing is that the book includes the usual "big" ones (G.B., France, Russia, China) as well as Germany and Mexico, but also India, Nigeria, Brazil, and Egypt, giving much material for the often overlooked less-developed countries.
Dragging your feet.......2001-04-27
Although this book has wonderful facts and figures, and should be used as a reference material, it is awfull for reading. The only way you will finish reading this book is if you have to for school or you are very motivated. It is slow and does not keep your attention.

The AP Comparative Government and Politics Examination: What You Need to Know, Second Edition
ASIN: 0321350995 |
Book Description
Comparative Politics Today is the text that defined the discipline of comparative politics and continues to set the standard for the course with and the most current country study chapters available. The chapters on England, France, Germany, Russia, Japan, India, and the United States have all been thoroughly updated. As in the previous edition, theoretical chapters (Chapters 1-7) at the beginning of the book explore the "purpose of government" and provide students with a framework for understanding comparative politics. The theoretical section is followed by 12 individual country studies. All country studies are written by pre-eminent specialists on that particular country, ensuring that students have the most reliable information and insights into the political systems of those nations.

AP Gov Students Thoughts.......2006-10-18
I am an 11th grader using this book in my AP Government class, and I have not been thourougly impressed with this book. It is incredibly dense and hard to follow. (It usually takes me over two hours to do a Chapters worth of notes.) The vocabulary words are rarely defined and usually lack contextual clues as well.
If this book is to be used for a high school AP class, then it should come with more resources for either the teacher (so they have a thorough understanding of the book) or else for the students.
From what I can tell, this book has a lot of useful information, and seems to be a decent resource if the students and teacher are willing to put the time into it. Unfortunately, with an AP test four months away, time is in short supply.
Taught by the Author.......2005-09-03
This text was used in the course of comparative politics I am currently taking with 2 of its authors. The book is quiet deep and is definitely not for use in teaching AP COMPARATIVE GOVT. Introduction is pretty long and boring.

Book Description
Through proven learning experiences that are as close to real-life practice as can be obtained from a book, DIRECT SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE: THEORY AND SKILLS prepares social work students for effective work in the field. Many of the case examples are drawn from social work practitioners as well as the authors' own practice situations. Long praised for its appropriate level of rigor, the book integrates the major theories and skills that direct social work practitioners need to understand and master--thus giving the book its reputation as the classic source for helping students learn direct practice skills. Consisting of four parts, the book begins by identifying the mission of social work, its values, and knowledge base. The authors then differentiate generalist from direct practice and explore roles of direct practitioners. Common elements amongst diverse theorists are then examined while key intervention strategies and various client population and practice settings are presented. Specifically, Part One provides the foundational/values and knowledge base material; Part Two is devoted to the beginning phase of the helping process; Part Three addresses the middle phase (goal attainment strategies), discussing four intervention approaches; and Part Four clarifies the termination phase of direct practice.

Rather dull, but easy to read.......2005-09-03
This textbook is not the most thrilling read of a lifetime, but its also not difficult. Somestimes the organization is a little odd, but it could be worse.
If its not required, I wouldn't buy it.
Refers to 6th edition, copyright 2002.......2002-10-26
A solid revision of a very useful textbook and clinical practice resource. Numerous typographical and typesetting errors will annoy those who expect more from the publishers of this social work classic, who appear to have rushed publication. Infotrac has only marginal value to working professionals and no value for enrolled students with library access. Wait for the second printing or stick with the 5th edition if you can.
Good for beginners in practice/good resource for veterans.......1999-03-24
I had this book last semester as a MSW student at WVU. I have found it useful as a resource guide for my current practice as a family-based therapist as well. I would recommend this book to all those out there in practice.

Customer Reviews:
For current or potential JRT owners this book is a must!.......2002-09-23
This book lets you get to know the exciting and roudy Jack Russell Terrier. My wife and I purchased this book prior to purchasing our JRT. It was (and still is) a wonderful resource. Anything for grooming, training and enjoying your pup is in this book. The author also includes stories from her past ownership of many Jack Russells. Excellent book!
JUMPING JACKS & JILLS.......2002-04-07
This is an excellent resource tool for Jack Russell terrier owners to folks who just happen to love the breed. A spirited, loving dog, the Jack Russell terrier more often than not makes for a very appealling family pet.
Jacks have an interesting history. Parson Jack Russell created the breed to be good mousers and hunting dogs in the late 19th century. Jacks are closely related to the fox terriers. In the intervening years, Jacks have gained popularity and fame. Jacks have starred in a number of recent movies and commericals. Dana Carvey starred with a Jack named Barkley in "Clean Slate" (Barkley also starred on several episodes of "Full House"). The popular TV sitcom "Frasier" has a Jack named Eddie (real name Moose and father to the Jack who starred in "My Dog Skip"). "Wishbone" is the most famous Jack to date. Recent coverage on this delightful breed has certainly helped boost their popularity as does this book.
Great for understanding the JRT.......2001-08-07
We recently purchased a JRT named Lucky. I purchased this book beforehand and found it a great resource for us. Everything from the history of the breed to showing the breed. Great photographs!
A must have for your collection.......2000-01-12
I was very taken with the book. So much that I contacted Mary Strom and purchased one of her puppies. She was not only very helpful, but made sure I had every bit of information I needed to make my Jack Russell terrier happy and healthy. I recommend this book to anyone that is looking to purchase or adopt a Jack Russell terrier. The information contained within is indispensable.
Must read on breed.......1999-08-03
Very good book gives fantastic information and tells you the true life of a Parson's Jack Russell terrier. If you are interested in this breed read this book!

Book Description
How much credit can be given to entrepreneurship for the unprecedented innovation and growth of free-enterprise economies? In this book, some of the world's leading economists tackle this difficult and understudied question, and their responses shed new light on how free-market economies work--and what policies most encourage their growth.
The contributors take as their starting point William J. Baumol's 2002 book The Free-Market Innovation Machine (Princeton), which argued that independent entrepreneurs are far more important to growth than economists have traditionally thought, and that an implicit partnership between such entrepreneurs and large corporations is critical to the success of market economies.
The contributors include the editors and Robert M. Solow, Kenneth J. Arrow, Michael M. Weinstein, Douglass C. North, Barry R. Weingast, Ying Lowrey, Nathan Rosenberg, Melissa A. Schilling, Corey Phelps, Sylvia Nasar, Boyan Jovanovic, Peter L. Rousseau, Edward N. Wolff, Deepak Somaya, David J. Teece, Naomi R. Lamoreaux, Kenneth L. Sokoloff, Yochanan Shachmurove, Ralph E. Book Description
Existing theories of economic liberalization fail to account for Mexico's experiences. Why has the Mexican government risked alienating its primary constituencies by pursuing trade opening and joining NAFTA? Big Business, the State, and Free Trade argues that Mexico's trade reforms are the product of the formation of political coalitions between business and the state in different international contexts. It covers the NAFTA negotiations in detail, with a special case study on the automotive industry. As Mexico democratizes, business-government coalitions will become increasingly important.

The World of Little House .......2007-06-02
I bought this book for use in my classroom. I am an elementary school teacher. There is a thematic approach to teaching using the Little Huuse stuff. Reading, History, Report Writing, Social Sciemce, Art. and anything else you incorporate. This book is the best place to start planning.
One of the best Little House boks!.......2007-01-25
This book is a great buy for a fan of Little House On The Prairie books or the television show. It really gives you an idea how Laura and her family lived. There are great pictures of the really Laura and her family. The layouts of her homes is very interesting. And it has great things to try that were done in Laura's time. (I have not tried any of them, but kids would love them.) It really makes The life of The Ingalls clan clearer. Most of all you really learn about her world and how it changed in her time. Trust me... it is a must.
A great way of going back to my child time.......2004-08-19
I love all these book and this one is not exception
Charming Book.......2002-12-02
This charming book is a must for Little House addicts. The partial family tree is interesting (though did Grandpa Ingalls really give two of his children the same first name? That struck me as odd). The book contains lots of recipes and activities, and a nice summary of the Ingall's family travels.
A few minor caveats, however:
Except for a brief introduction and the timeline at the end, the book follows the LH books, NOT Laura's actual life. So it isn't all factually accurate.
WHile a few of the "Little Houses" still exist, most are long gone. So the author's floor plans are imaginary, and they don't always follow the descriptions in the books. (For example, when Pa added the bedrooms onto the claim shanty at the beginning of "Little Town on the Prairie", Laura describes it as "building the other half of the house," meaning, to my mind, that the rooms should have been side by side; the same size as the original shanty room. THe author here shows them as being one behind the other, and taking up only half the legnth of the shanty.)
The recipes, while interesting, seem less historically accurate than the ones in the "Little House Cookbook." (Almanzo's "Long Winter" pancakes probably wouldn't have had eggs in them.)
And there are a few other minor factual errors, both in relation to Laura's real life and to her life as portrayed in the books.
Still a very worthwhile purchase for anyone interested in the book series.
Nice Companion to the Little House Series.......2000-07-26
This is a nice companion book to the Little House series. The book is filled with diagrams of what the houses that Laura and her family lived in may have looked like, simple activities suitable for children, recipes for foods that are described in the Little House books, and other background information about the books and Laura's life. Each chapter revolves around one of the nine books in the Little House series and the book contains an introduction about Laura Ingalls Wilder. The back of the book contains a time line of different world events that were going on during Laura's lifetime. This is a nice book to read after you have read the Little House series.
