Book Description
Last year, Annabel was "the girl who has everything"at least that's the part she played in the television commercial for Kopf 's Department Store. This year, she's the girl who has nothing: no best friend because mean-but-exciting Sophie dropped her, no peace at home since her older sister became anorexic, and no one to sit with at lunch. Until she meets Owen Armstrong. Tall, dark, and music-obsessed, Owen is a reformed bad boy with a commitment to truth-telling.With Owen's help, maybe Annabel can face what happened the night she and Sophie stopped being friends.
In this multi-layered, impossible-to-put-down book, Sarah Dessen tells the story of a year in the life of a family coming to terms with the imperfections beneath its perfect facade.
Customer Reviews:
I can speak.......2007-10-14
I cried. When Ann(nick name) let Sophie walk all over her I was crying, because sometimes you don't even have the energy to defend yourself when people accuse you of things. I hated Sophie. The moment she was introduced in the book I was disgusted, how could Ann even consider being friends with that jerk? That back stabber who wouldn't take her best friends side over her boy friends(we all know he was a cheater and it wouldn't last)!
I fell in love with Owen(maybe because he reminded me of my 5th grade grammar teacher who I love and miss)the moment he stopped to help Ann while she was vomiting. I loved how edgy and philosophical he was. It was like we were the same person. I knew Ann and him should be together.
Reading this book was like taking a look into my own thoughts and feelings; it was like stepping into my high school again. The world where the coolest "It Girl" was the Queen Bee and what ever she said went, it sucked to know that Ann had once been on top but had lost everything in one moment because of some stupid guy.
I loved how broken their family was, the glass house that was their life; the home that only showed half a story. I think life's kind of like that.
Simple Perfection.......2007-10-07
I picked this book up in the public library by chance (and cause i liked the cover) and am i glad i did. What starts out as a typical chick book delves into something more sutle where you find yourself connecting with everyone. The characters are completely believable and the romance is simple and real without the over the top feel some teen authors go for. This book isnt just for young either i am in fact 18 and my mum (40 sumthing) both loved it. I realised when, 4 hours later i was still mulling over it and had to go back and re-read the perfect ending, that this is a real gem of a book and i encourage anyone to read it.
Turn Down the Sound and Just Listen.......2007-10-04
Told in first person, Annabel keeps a secret from her sisters, her parents and even the reader, only alluding to it in certain passages. She seems to think that some things are best untold, and although she has lost her best friend, Clarke, and is tormented by her fair weather friend, Sophie, Annabel remains silent. Her resolve "not to tell" starts to flicker when she befriends another outsider, Owen Armstrong.
Owen's life is about music and he shares his love with Annabel. It's one CD that leads her back to Owen with the truth.
I'm always amazed by authors who can write well. I don't mean grammatically correct, or making sure all of the proper elements are in the story. I mean taking characters and giving them each personalities and conflicts that make them leave the page and come into the room where you are reading. Sarah Dessen is one of those authors. My love for music brought me to this novel and my love of great writing will take me to another from her collection.
I will tell you that I consider this book to be for older middle school and high school readers. I also think that parents should look through this book. The subject matter is mature and can be a bit unsettling. Yet, it offers an opportunity for serious conversations.
Realistic and Poignant.......2007-09-08
In this captivating and touching novel, Sarah Dessen offers us a look into the mind of Annabel, a girl who is scarred and withdrawn because of her past experiences. She is terrified of confrontation, and so she hides her feelings from everyone, choosing to constantly tell white lies rather then expose her true emotional state.
Slowly, cautiously, Annabel reveals to the reader her emotional baggage, but never confesses everything at once, offering instead partial information that leaves the reader curious and eager to piece together the scattered bits and clues.
Annabel embodies emotions that everyone has felt, the desire to speak out and have others understand, the fear that prevents us from doing so, and the resulting feeling of being ostracized and alone. It is a joy to watch her slowing coming out her shell, transforming through her new friendship with a boy named Owen. Her feelings are realistic and acute, making her an incredibly sympathetic heroine.
The world that Annabel lives in is equally realistic and acute. Dessen's portrayal of high school is much more accurate and familiar then the depictions of similar authors. She succeeds in creating dynamic relationships and interesting situations without straying from realism. The resulting novel is vivid and honest, written in a simple, powerful and thought-evoking style.
pleased, as usual.......2007-08-23
im always pleased with her books, and this was no exception, she is an amazing writer and ive never been disspointed by anything ive read by her. not my favorite, but worth reading

Excellent Reference Book and Helpful Author.......2007-09-16
The Unofficial Guide helped me to figure out the next step to helping my sons with Legos. We have several kits and its all a big mess. However, now with this book, I have been able to organize my thoughts and come up with a way to make Legos a good learning tool. The book has many helpful tips about Lego building techniques and terminology. Its a great reference book. Specifically, the Brickopedia section in the back shows that each part has a part number. In addition, the reference to the BrickLink web page to order missing parts was helpful. I also sent an email to the author and Mr. Bedford responded within 24 hours with a kind and courteous note. Its a great book with an honest and helpful author. Five stars!

As a adult fan of Lego (AFOL) it was a helpful guide in helping me
to design and build my own creation (MOC).
I now have detailed plans combined with creativity and it has begun
to take shape.
Like in the real world building your own house;
With this book you become archetect, contractor and builder.
The book gives a lot of infrmation in 320 pages!
Packed with useful information.......2007-01-13
Who knew there were so many ways to put bricks together? I loved the part showing building techniques which I hadn't tried before. The tips on microscale building allow you to build large scenes with less bricks than other scales. There is a lot of content here, and I highly recommend it.

The ultimate book for the ultimate building toy!.......2007-01-13
Lego may be the most versatile and beautifully designed construction toy of all time. It's an ingenious blend of engineering, art and fun. Read Allan Bedford's book and you'll probably agree!
I've been a Lego fan for over 40 years, but most of the time I've just been reliving childhood memories from the mid-1960s - occasionally building houses out of red and white bricks, then putting them back into storage. Allan Bedford's book has changed all that. It has shown me what I've been missing all these years!
The creative - and yes, artistic! - potential of Lego is absolutely mind-boggling. Bedford's book explores areas most people couldn't even imagine. There's something for everyone: mosaics and sculptures for artistic types, buildings and vehicles for aspiring architects and engineers, microscale projects for those who prefer or need to keep things really small (note: it's the best way to build things at work without attracting too much attention!), and even sorting and storage tips for serious builders and collectors. And be warned: after you read this book, you won't be able to resist buying a LOT more Lego!
A special feature of Bedford's book is the Brickopedia - an appendix illustrating hundreds of Lego pieces, including the year each was introduced. It alone is worth the price of the book. It made me appreciate the truly brilliant design of the Lego elements that have appeared since the 1960s.
Once you're familiar with the newer Lego bits in the Brickopedia, you'll be delighted with the way they can be used in different Lego constructions. Just recognizing them is half the fun: the front of Santa's sleigh can show up as part of an automobile spoiler; a shark's tooth can morph into the visor of a traffic light; and a snowman's nose can be used as a fire hose nozzle.
One of Picasso's most loved and whimsical sculptures is a bull's head fashioned from a bicycle seat and a pair of handle bars (Tête de taureau,1942). It took artistic vision and a playful creativity to put these components together. Lego opens the door to the vision and creativity that reside within us. Allan Bedford's book is the long-awaited key!

"This book is not a book about a toy. It is a book about an idea, a set of values, and a long-term commitment to empowering children to use their creativity and build their imagination."
So states Lego Group president Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen in his introduction to this fascinating, visually exciting tribute to Lego bricks and the people who play with them. Lego "maniacs" are no mere invention of Lego Group's industrious marketing machine. Enthusiastic fans of the ingeniously designed, colorful plastic building blocks do indeed exist, and in vast numbers--as of 1996, an estimated 300 million children and adults had played with Lego bricks since the first one rolled off the presses in 1949. (How many yellow knob-headed Lego people populate the earth today? A cool 2.3 billion.)
The visual wizards at Dorling Kindersley have labored together with the staff at Lego to assemble a hefty, photo-rich book essential to the library of any maniac (or maniac emeritus). The Ultimate Lego Book recounts the company's early history as a one-man operation back in the 1930s and subsequent creation of its first plastic "automatic binding brick," to the contemporary construction of myriad Legoland theme parks.
Trivia buffs will appreciate the playful but detailed graphic time line (first Lego window, 1957; first wheel, 1962; first dolphin, 1995). Everyone will love the pages of imagination-stretching constructions, from the small but clever (an unmistakable Elvis, complete with pompadour) to the overwhelmingly detailed (a meticulous model of Grand Central Station) to the downright strange (a life-size space helmet with visor and gas mask). The Lego universe includes a Mona Lisa replica, a 10,500-piece pelican, and even a yellow submarine. Enjoy! (Ages 6 to 106) --Paul Hughes

I enjoying reading this book and looking to make other things with the helpful ideas in this book.
Creative and Interesting.......2007-02-20
This book is an ultimate hit. The history of the Lego is described and then creations that fit every category are shown. Some of the hints on how to build things are really helpful.
This book IS for anyone who likes Lego's.
Ultimate Lego Book.......2007-01-15
I have 3 boys who all clamor to look at this book. They all love legos and this book has great pictures and inspiration. It's a must for any avid lego fan.
Stars in his eyes.......2007-01-10
We bought this book as a Christmas gift for our 10-year-old nephew [in combination with Lego Crazy Action Contraptions: A Lego Inventions Book (Klutz)]. His eyes were as big and round as Christmas-tree ornaments as he flipped through the books and saw the myriad wonderful things he could build with his treasured blocks. And, with two huge tubs of Lego pieces already in his possession, we figured he didn't need yet another set of Legos... but perhaps something nifty to build with them all. This fills the bill nicely!
For all ages!.......2007-01-10
I purchased this for my seven-year old, yet my 20-year old enjoyed it just as much! Great pictures!

Fun, fun, fun.......2007-03-10
this was a Christmas gift for my 11 yr. old grandson. We have had so much fun doing this together and his father joined in to add even more fun. Winter has flown by much faster with this FAMILY TIME craft project. We are looking forward to logging our flight distances as soon as the weather warms a bit. Quiet time together becames lots of laughs and individual creative juices began to flow. who knew paper airplanes could be so much fun.
More and more paper.......2007-02-20
The paper in my printer has been stolen, all the loose paper in the house has gone the same route. Flying through the air and landing in various places like behind the couch, under the tables, into the closets, and onto the bookshelves.
good plane designs but didn't like the scary gruesome pictures.......2006-12-16
They have some planes with preprinted pictures that I would have prefered they left out like a vampire and ghoul. I don't know why they have to make stuff which doesn't need to be scary.
Great Birthday Gift That Never Goes Out of Style!.......2006-11-20
I first bought one of these for my then 6 yo son. He enjoyed it so much that I bought one for his friend's birthday. Finally, the light bulb went off and I bought a bunch more to have instant gifts for the plethora of birthday parties he gets invited to during the year. Boy, am I glad I did that! The cost is great, no one else ever gives the same gift, it is easily transportable, doesn't require batteries, entertains for hours without beeping or playing annoying music, and is educational (Okay, I admit that "educational" can be the kiss of death for a kid gift, but The Kids' Paper Air Plane Book is a fun gift that happens to incorporate some educational value, not some geeky educational bore of a toy that is briefly entertaining). Even the stray kid who didn't seem to "get it" at first, soon fell in love with this book. I am about to order 6 more. I need another 2 for my boys (ages 6 and 9) and 4 more as gifts. These never go out of style. BTW, I turn into Cool Mom whenever I am able to help them with any plane struggles. That doesn't happen to my 9 yo anymore. He now even makes his own awesome airplanes out of plain paper, while his non-plane-making peers look on in amazement! Definitely a gift winner! It's also easy to wrap, which is no small thing in this world of oddly-shaped packages.
I doubt a 4-year-old would be able to read this........2006-06-10
This is probably a good paper airplane book, but I'm assuming that the reviewers here who have small children are largely reading the book themselves and then showing their kids how to do it, or even just making the planes for the kids.
After taking a look inside the book, I'm having a hard time imagining that a typical 4-year-old is going to be able to read and understand it. I mean, before we build the plane, let's talk about stability and aerodynamics, shall we, Jr.? Please. Older kids will probably really enjoy this book, but the age range of 4-8 seems a bit off. Probably should start at at least age 7 if you are expecting your kid to actually be able to read this him/herself.
Hmm...interesting that I am getting negative "helpful" reviews for simply pointing out that this book's language is too advanced for the 4-year-olds it claims to target. I would be mighty interested if your 4-year-old can read and understand the aerodynamics concepts presented at the beginning of the book. Yeah...didn't think so.
That doesn't mean that it's not a fun book, but I am simply pointing out that it is not one that most of the kids in its purported age range can digest themselves.

Customer Reviews:
The process of comprehending text.......2004-11-15
Reutzel and Cooter, Jr. discusses the process of comprehending text in four stages. It is based on the schema theory. The first stage is searching. By this, they mean that in the very beginning, the reader is trying to search for the meaning of the text by looking and searching at the given text or print. By searching the text, the reader is using their schemata to help them understand what the text is trying to tell them. The second stage is applying. Applying is when the reader uses what they already know from the first stage, searching, to understand the text. The third stage is selecting and evaluating. In this stage, the reader looks at the information they already know and starts to evaluate the information by either retaining or discarding the information. It is in this step, that the reader is trying to decide which information is important for him/her to remember. The last stage is composing. The reader is making up a new meaning for the text that he/she just read by using what he already knows from all the previous stages. The new meaning is a replica of what he/she just read, but in their own words. These four stages, as Reutzel and Cooter, Jr. illustrate it, is a cyclical process. By this they mean that it is a circular process, where the student needs to be continually Applying, Searching, Selecting and Evaluating and then Composing.
Reutzel and Cooter, Jr. also discusses the four major difficulties a student may have in comprehension. The first difficulty a student may have is not having the prior knowledge or schema about the given text. Because of the lack of prior knowledge, the student will not be able to understand what the text is trying to convey. Thus, not being able to comprehend the text. The next difficulty a student may encounter is having the prior knowledge and schema about the text, but the author does not give enough information or clues for the student to establish or decide on a given schema that he/she already has. Third, the student may have selected a schema ahead of time only to find out that it doesn't make sense as they read the text. And lastly, the student's cultural experiences greatly affect how he/she chooses a schema to understand the text. This may lead to "an understanding of the text but a misunderstanding of the author"

Both are available along with Regents groups of reading forsale under jring 47 - used for 49. I am selling all three together. I studied these three books and did very well on the test - just last month.

A must read for teachers of children from grades 1 through 8
Book Description
Magical heroes like Harry Potter, Spiderman, or Catwoman provide plenty of entertainment for kids, but in real life heroes are made of sterner stuff than celluloid fantasies. In this inspiring collection of biographies, critically acclaimed writer and psychologist Sandra McLeod Humphrey teaches young people that heroes were once ordinary people whose strength of character helped them to achieve extraordinary things. Starting with only their dreams, they worked hard and overcame obstacles to make their dreams come true. Some overcame physical handicaps, others psychological barriers like extreme shyness or feelings of inferiority; some faced racial discrimination or educational disadvantage, others financial burdens. In spite of these frustrations and discouragements, all of these people discovered in themselves the patience, perseverance, and determination to pursue their dreams beyond every obstacle. The message is clear: No matter who you are or where you come from, you too can accomplish extraordinary things, as long as you dare to dream and never, never, never give up!
Customer Reviews:
Great for youngsters and those who look for inspiration but with short concentration span.......2007-06-12
If I were a teacher, I would definitely make this a required reading for all my students. It's short with only four pages for each character. However, the "As a boy" + "As a man" and "As a girl" + "As a woman" format, the smart pick of heroes/heroines and the excellent story writing skill of the author, well distinguished it from other biographies of the same high inspirational value and make it particularly suitable for children and people with short concentration span. Educational and interesting by all means. Highly recommended!
DARE TO DREAM - A Classroom Treasury.......2005-11-01
Dare to Dream: 25 extraordinary lives by Sandra McLeod Humphrey is so needed by our society, where violent solutions to conflict and demands for instant results are all too common.
Because a wide range of personalities is featured, each reader will identify with some of the characters. The individuals, each described as a young person and then as an adult, include: Nellie Bly, who used journalism as a tool for social justice; Jim Thorpe, a Native American who endured physical and emotional hardship and was known as "The World's Greatest Athlete"; Gloria Estefan who found emotional escape in music and became a successful performer as well as an advocate for abused children; Ben Carson who was ridiculed for failing grades, changed his learning habits, and became the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins.
How refreshing to find a source of inspiration which is so accessible to young people. Teachers will welcome this book, with its readable chapters which are brief enough to be included within class periods. Dare to Dream comes at a time when we need real heroes and reasons for hope.
Should Be Recommend Reading.......2005-08-08
If I had been given a history book written by Humphrey, I would've fell in love with History! She writes in a way that makes historical figures seem interesting, lively, and important. Not only does she include many personal attributes with each profile, but she explains why these people made significant contributions to history (past and present)!
Inspire Your Dreamer.......2005-06-21
This collection of twenty-five short biographies introduces us to heroes in all avenues of achievement: invention, medicine, arts, science, education, sports. Each story is a testament to perseverence and self-determination. Whatever a child's dream (science, education, sports, invention, performing arts), there is a hero AND heroine who made their dream come true. The collection ran the gamut of great achievers. Some I knew about, others were new. The stories were too short for my taste. Although balanced in numbers, some of the selections puzzle me. For example, why Sammy Sosa and not Roberto Clemente? The stories have enough information to potentially inspire a child to research and learn more about a person of interest. Great balance of men and women for all fields of achievement.
The mini-biographies were choppy at times. The collection may be too heavy with sports figures (24% are athletes, all but one male), including Michael Jordan, who left school early to go pro? The biographies celebrate personal triumphs, despite others' judgments and roadblocks. A great book for talking about being true to one's self!
Teach Children How to Lead Exemplary Lives.......2005-06-13
In today's fast-paced, media-driven world, we have plenty of celebrities, but few heroes. While celebrities are famous (in many cases, for questionable behavior), heroes are esteemed for character, courage and achievement. In other words, a celebrity does not a hero make.
As parents, how do we teach our children to see the difference? How do we teach them that the actress who gets attention for taking off her clothes or the athlete who gets media coverage for punching a fan are merely celebrities, not heroes?
Sandra McLeod Humphrey's latest book, "Dare to Dream! 25 Extraordinary Lives" provides a solution to our dilemma. Humphrey, a retired psychologist and author of the series of "What Do You Do?" books (which foster moral development in children), has done it again with her latest book. "Dare to Dream!" reveals the struggles of real-life heroes and how tough choices led to development of character, moral fiber and social change. Reading about how these people led their lives will give your children role models after which to pattern their behavior.
"Dare to Dream!" has something for every child. Sandra McLeod Humphrey has carefully selected heroes from every ethnicity and walk of life, from sports to science, from music to poetry. Humphrey chronicles hero development during each person's life, from child to adult, so kids can begin to see how choices shape a life. Included in the book are current heroines (like Maya Angelou) and historic heroes (like Abe Lincoln). Although the characterizations are information-rich, they are brief-most are no more than two or three pages-which makes the book a great summer read. While reading the engaging stories from "Dare to Dream!" your children will be sharpening their literary skills and learning how to rise above time, place and circumstance to become heroes of their own lives.

i love this book! it truly explains why buildings behave the way they do and why they are built the way they are. it takes complicated engineeriing and makes it simple, very simple. every principle has an easy to follow sketch and example. this book is a must for architects, engineers, builders or anyone who wants to go behind the scenes and understand the 'why' of buildings. many of the principles and examples only apply to large scale commercial projects like high rises and bridges, so it may not be pertinent for the home builder, but i'd still recommend it. i love to understand why i build houses a certain way. this book explains basic building principles.
Inspiring.......2005-01-17
A dear friend gave me this book for my ninth birthday back in 1990. Today, I am a structural engineering associate with a major forensic engineering firm, and I know that much of my fascination with the field began with Salvadori's riveting explanations of the basic principles of structural design. This book is incredible for any kid with any scientific inclination!
If it had been around..........2000-01-30
I've been rereading this lately. This morning I showed everybody in the restaurant where I was eating the book saying, "if this had been around when I was in middle school or junior high, I expect that I would be an architect or structural engineer now.
Really good high school-level treatment of structural forces.......1999-12-28
For a person who wonders why a bridge is shaped the way it is, or why buildings lean and don't fall, this is an ideal introduction. Useful for anyone interested in structures (e.g. model railroad truss work, furniture design, etc.) and would be very good for a student interested in civil or construction engineering as a future career.

Stunning.......2007-07-08
I bought this gift for my nephew who loves anything with dragons. Imagine his surprise when he saw this book for his birthday! I bought this book and the other Dragonology book. What gorgeous books! They looked like they had real leather covers. The prices on these two books could not be beat.
He was so enchanted with the beautiful pages that had foil on them. The model was like a separate gift for him. He immediately built it and it was simple enough for him to do it alone(age 8). It created a very real world of dragons for him.
If you are looking for a classy book and/or a great gift for your dragon lovers, then look no further for this is a great book at a great value. My big kid (my husband) loved it too!
Perfect for dorks like me!.......2007-06-17
Only children younger than nine or fantasy dorks like myself would enjoy a model of a dragon they can actually hang in their bedroom. But I've got a lot more, similarly weird, things in my room -- so it's OK.
This set is amazing. I got it used, so a couple pieces were bent, but nothing broken. Great condition. Also, it was the European Dragon -- my favorite type -- and though I probably want to get the volumes to come, I'm glad the first was my favorite type of dragon.
I've now got three Dragonology items -- the handbook, the original book, and this.
This series is great for anyone who loves fictional factbooks, or just dragon nerds. Also, though I can't vouch for the other Ologies, Egyptology is excellent as well.

keeps interest going...........2007-03-30
My 12 year old son purchased this book and these are his thoughts on the book; "I have an interest in finding out as much as I can about dragons. This book has inspired me to keep on reading more and more and learning more and more."
Dragonology.......2007-03-29
All of the "Ology" books are pure fun. Juvenile section? I wonder if they truly can appreciate the artwork and humor involved.

peaceful, creative, and attractive.......2006-10-03
This book combines fairly simple craft projects with an eco-friendly approach. Ideas are divided by season, as the availability of materials will vary, and projects range from animal sanctuaries and feeders to rustic toys and arts. The whole book strives to foster a love of and respect for nature, discussing natural phenomena and facts about the everyday things we know little about. The whole feel of the book really worked for me, and I think imparting this respect for our planet is always a good idea, not only because we have to live here and treat our surroundings well, but because nature has so much to offer us. These ideas make for great shared experiences with a family or class. Great fun, educational, and filled with lovely photos and ideas.
True Crafting Book.......2006-05-11
I recently found this book at my local library and and loved it so much that I am looking to add it to my collection. This is not a book filled with cutsie fifteen minute projects that the kids do on their own, rather it is for adults to explore with kids, actually spending time with them.
My children detest most children's crafts; they would much rather create something that gets used in real life. They can hardly wait to try out the cement birdbath, and are already making the pocket sundials. I am overjoyed to see them finally taking joy in crafting. Projects that take time and effort to finish help teach kids to see things through to the end and give them a greater appreciation for the work others put into their creations.
Another great thing about this book is all of the extra information tucked in. There are boxes and pages dedicated to subjects such as types of bark, how to find the north star, and which birds eat which types of food. There are even sections on tracking animals, wind power, rain facts and how seeds travel. The information is interesting enough without over-doing it.
All in all, an excellent rescource for a parent who wants to spend time exploring nature with kids, or for an older youth who likes nature.
Nature Crafts for Kids.......2000-04-05
This book contains wonderful ideas for a wide range of ages using items found in nature. The crafts are arranged according to the season in which most of the materials will be found. They give alternate places in which to find some materials or replacemant materials. There are great illustrations and very good step by step instructions for creating the items.
Children that have this book available to them and have the help of an interested adult need not be bored any time of the year.
Projects are fun, instructional and varied. Children can learn to enjoy nature, science and make many useful things using this book. Learning filled with fun and excitement could be a subtitle for "Nature Crafts For Kids".

Fun project but NOT for kids ages 4 to 10!! .......2006-12-21
Whoever identified this as for kids ages 4 to 10 must not have any experience with kids. It took me (a middle-aged mom with an advanced degree and great fine-motor skills) about two hours to put one together. I needed tiny, sharp scissors - a must to do this project right. It came out great and my kids (ages 9 and 10) enjoyed doing the last part of the project, but they would have been very frustrated trying to do the whole thing. GRADES 4 to 10 is more like it.
