Best book on home brewing.......2007-10-21
This is hands down the best book out there on homebrewing. Has simple to complicated instructions about everything. The more you brew, the more info you want, this book has it all. Pictures, too. Just wonderful. Would reccomend to anyone, beginner to advanced, for homebrewing.Cheers!
Invaluable resource for beginning homebrewers.......2007-09-15
I bought this book along with Charlie Papazian's third edition of "Complete Joy of Homebrewing." These two books have taught me everything I needed to know to make outstanding beer the first time. My experience was with a standard Pale Ale recipe. With the instruction and advice in this book, the beer was outstanding. he book covers all aspects of beginning homebrewing, including equipment needed, the essential science behind homebrewing, ingredients and a no-nonsense approach to brewing your first batch. I especially appreciated that Chapter 1 was dedicated to the person that wanted to brew his/her own beer immediately. It takes you through the process and then expounds on the process in the following chapters. If you just wanted to brew a batch of beer, Chapter 1 will get you there. If you want to understand the brewing process and why things are done the way they are, read the rest of the book. I feel as I've gained years of homebrewing knowledge by purchasing this book and assimilating the wisdom and experience contained within.
How To Brew.......2007-09-01
I'm a home brewer. I own Charlie Papazian's book, "The Complete Joy of Homebrewing," third edition. I have read Mr. Papazian's book from cover to cover. However, as a brewer, you are always searching for more, much more. You are always asking yourself, "How can I can I make this beer better?" Well, "How to Brew" is your answer. Read Mr. Palmers book. Absorb it. Highlight it. Sleep with it under your pillow. EVERY question is answered. Mr. Palmer holds your hand and takes you step by step through the brewing process. Once the basics are learned, you are then taught the "how's and why's." If it's not in this book...you don't need to know it. Remember the book, "Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex?" Well, THIS is the same, only..."EVERYTHING You Always Wanted To Know About Brewing GREAT Beer." Just buy the book, you'll then understand what I'm talking about!!!
Wishing you all a cold pilsner.
beer brewer.......2007-07-24
this is an excellent book both for the beginning brewer and more advanced brewer lots of important technical stuff for the advanced brewer. You really can brew right the first time if you read even some of the first chapters in this book!
Ok, but nothing special.......2007-05-14
This book has the same information of nearly every other beginning book. I had hoped it might have a little extra, but it is VERY basic. A disappointment. I can recommend it for someone just beginning, but even then, I prefer Joy of Homebrewing. This one just didn't have the same fun tone, and also didn't have anything new or updated. I returned it.

Book Description
Starting from the premise that successful students are not necessarily any more brilliant than their less successful peers, but have simply mastered the art of efficient learning, Adam Robinson introduces high school and college students to an innovative approach that can help them achieve top grades while discovering the joy of true learning.

Customer Reviews:
Great book still use what I learned 13 years later.......2007-10-18
I used this book in college. It was the most helpful book I had on doing well in college.
The things I still use today and use when I teach is the idea of "Pro Questions."
I impressed many of my profs in college 13 years ago with this trick and could come up with questions that my profs never thought of. Made me look like a real thinker.
Also you really do learn the subject much deeper then just by forcing subjects in your memory to pass the class.
I can honestly say that my retention rate even 13 years after college is still not to bad.
The down side to this book is that it is work. It will take more time but you will learn and understand more but as you develop the skills from this book you will learn quicker and easier because you will be building a stronger base.
I still have this book and an English reference book from college.
I'm saving it for my daughter.
You are your own best teacher!.......2007-09-11
The main point of this amazing book is that you will teach yourself best, not an instructor in high school or college, a tutor, your mom, your boss, your spouse, your best friend, but the person who knows when you get tired, when you are hungry, when you are cranky--yourself! That can be a very important lesson. You are in control of what you learn. Granted you are going to need other people to show you and talk you through learning, but teaching yourself is empowering.
The other smart student principles and key lists are also very thought provoking and essentially highlight how school at all levels is a game. But it is a game worth playing.
I think a lot of the reviewers are forgetting that Mr. Robinson has mentioned that What Smart Students Know is to use what works best for them. He demonstrates a note-taking method that works for him, but if it doesn't work for you throw it out and teach yourself one that works. My advice would be that each situation (class, job etc.) might cause you to modify your note-taking. For example, for some of my classes I would take notes in a paper notebook and then type them before each test and have about 6 pages to review. For other classes there would be no need to type my notes because I would be typing a review sheet. For other classes such as my Italian language class I NEVER took notes.
One of the many great morals of this book is find out what works for you and use it. Don't worry about what everyone else is doing or about what the "experts" say. Be your own expert. There is a very popular note-taking method "Cambridge" by name which involves making two columns and filling in matching information from class notes and text books. This method never worked for me no matter how many times I tried it. So what--throw it out. Use what works.
I found what works for me and stopped worrying about what all the experts said because Adam Robinson's book game me the courage to play the Smart Student game. I was always angry that school seemed to focus on everything but learning, which is what I wanted to do most. But I learned how to play so that I could maximize my learning and my grades! I graduated magna cum laude, a member of 4 honor societies (including Phi Beta Kappa), and won the award for most outstanding undergraduate in the History Department at my University.
Free your mind; read What Smart Students Know. Keep in mind you decide what is hogwash and what is inspired. Then use it and be happy.
Look at other books.......2007-07-01
This book has only a few basic ideas. The author says the same things over and over again in different ways. He uses many tricks to fill up space and waste your time. Take my word for it, look into the other books.
Parents, help out your high schoolers with this book.......2007-05-23
In most schools, textbooks are a given. History is taught from a textbook, science is taught from a textbook, as are most other subjects. The problem with most textbooks is that they are usually dull, often poorly written, and difficult to read. Presenting only one point of view, they don't give the big picture.
Adam Robinson, who has been empowering students with his standardized test-taking strategies for 25 years, brings us the book What Smart Students Know. He is quick to say that a 100% textbook approach to learning a subject is not ideal; in fact, despite the fact that most of us would consider him a genius, he himself had no interest in school. But he was very good at playing the game, earning top scores, and in the end, gaining satisfaction from learning how to learn.
In this book, Robinson speaks right to students, explaining how to maximize learning. He tells how to how to get interested in the text you are assigned, how to take charge of your own learning, and how to learn more from a textbook in a shorter period of time. He tells us where to start if you really don't understand a topic, and how to decide what information is important. His premise is that anyone can learn to be a smart student.
This book is an insightful look into how top students approach learning. I was one of the top students in my graduating class in college, and unconsciously used many of the techniques that Robinson recommends. When I was a tutor to other college students, I would show them how to ask themselves questions before reading the test, how to outline the material, and how to memorize through mnemonics, but this book goes way beyond that.
In "What Smart Students Know," Robinson gives us twelve questions to ask ourselves when studying any subject. Questions include "What's the big picture here?" "How can I organize this information?" There is a chapter dedicated to each of the twelve questions.
Even if your student is already a hard-working, high-scoring student, he or she will benefit from Robinson's work. They will be able to study in less time and with less stress.
If your teen has a difficult time reading and understanding the assigned textbooks at school, step in and help him. Read one chapter at a time and show your student how to apply the techniques. Help your student replace ineffective habits with these super-charged learning habits, and I'll bet you pick up some learning techniques along the way, too.
Every student needs this book..........2007-02-19
...whether they get A's or not.
I've never been a "good student", but I've always liked school and been intelligent. I would get very frustrated seeing less intelligent people get straight A's while I was struggling to pass classes. Last semester I got this book, and already I'm doing better in school that ever before. I don't do everything the book suggests, but I keep the organization techniques in mind, and I make sure that I have multiple sources for every class (one of the tips that has helped alot). I have recommended this to all my friends who say they want to do better in school.
Now graduate school doesn't look so frightening.

David Icke is telling the truth........2007-09-11
the reason it sounds so fantastic is that the average person does not have the information. They live in a fog of network television and canned news media - all of which are owned & controlled by the ones behind the so-called 'conspiracy'.
Do the research. It's no story - it's real.
Best book I've ever read.......2007-09-11
The conclusions in this book about the nature of reality and how it's all an illusion have changed my life for the best. Icke is very thorough and well documented in trying to support his claims. I couldn't put the book down. Five stars.
Balony.......2006-11-25
Hehe, O.K. I bought the book -- it's not the first time I've thrown away money and won't be the last. After skimming through it and reading this guy's life story, which includes "voices" psychics, and god-knows what else, I can say that I refuse to waste my valuable time reading this clap-trap. Let me suggest that everyone thinking about buying this book, read THIS book first you will be doing yourself a lifelong favor.
IS DAVID ICKE STARTING TO MAKE SENSE?.......2006-09-18
It's easy to simply reject someone who says the world is run by manipulative reptilians posing as world leaders; that George Bush, Tony Blair, the British monarch, and many other prominent people are blood-drinking child-abusers who engage in secret rituals unknown to the rest of us. Despite David Icke's seemingly outrageous claims, I found some logic as well as interesting and possibly credible theories in Tales From the Time Loop. In contast to his earlier books, he has shifted his beliefs in a more positive direction. It sounds a lot like he is embracing spirituality and the immortality of the soul. He accepts the existence of the astral world, a place or state with many levels occupied by beings with numerous agendas and understandings of the universe. But he rejects reincarnation as separate lifetimes ("there is no time") or that life in a human body is a journey toward perfection. In Icke's version of reality, there is no karma, no need to make up for evil deeds or mistakes. Everything is an illusion. What is missing in his framework, in my opinion, is purpose. Why does reality exist? Why are we here playing these games?
What about the evil reptilians? Why are they here and what do they want? Icke finally gives us a reason the reptilians must sacrifice humans and drink blood. He says they have a problem remaining in this dimension and they need human DNA to keep from shifting back to their own dimension. They sometimes do shapeshift into reptiles, and he quotes numerous witnesses who have seen them shift. Icke takes pokes at the frenzy of interest in the bloodline of Jesus (theories that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married and had children). He says the so-called Jesus bloodline is just part of the reptilian bloodline. In a previous book, he claimed there was no historical Jesus, so I don't know what to make of this new belittling of the Jesus bloodline.
But the repitilians seem to fade in importance behind his major thesis, that we are all participating in a Time Loop in which history keeps repeating itself. Everything in the Time Loop (our apparent universe as well as the astral world) vibrates. Only Oneness does not vibrate. David found a parallel to this idea in the movie, The Matrix, which obviously impressed him much more than it impressed me. I found the Matrix movies silly stories thinly built around special effects. Despite his admiration for matrix-buster Neo, Icke criticizes the media for being purveyors of falsehood that serve the Illuminati agenda.
Speaking of history, I do not think David Icke is anti-semitic as some of his critics charge. He is absolutely correct in defending anyone's right to express their point of view, even if it is repugnant and can be proven wrong. David is not a holocaust-denyer, but he does think people have a right to deny the holocaust. If we had an intelligent, educated populace, there would be few takers for theories like "there was no holocaust" that are so contrary to tons of evidence. He also explores an interesting idea about the origin of today's Jewish population. There is some evidence that the Ashkenazi Jews (those who come from Europe) were at least in part related to a non-semitic people called the Khazars who converted to Judaism in 740 AD. They occupied territory that is mostly in modern-day Turkey. The significance of this (according to Icke) is that it refutes the idea that present-day Israel was an ancestral home to its current Jewish inhabitants.
But as the book progresses, Icke sounds more like many New Agers in proclaiming that human consciousness will shift into higher gear and can defeat the Illuminati. He gained some new insights, he says, while taking a psychoactive drug, ayahuasca, in Brazil. This was his first foray into mind-altering drugs and he tells us he received a great deal of information from a voice in his head. I believe him (this is not an uncommon experience) but I recognize that we do not know the origin of these voices. They may originate within ourselves, or they may come from spiritual entities outside ourselves. In either case, we cannot be sure what they tell us contains any actual truth.
Why bother reading Tales From the Time Loop or any of David Icke's books? I don't know if there are any actual Illuminati plotting to take over the world, but I do know the world is full of evil, with its endless wars, unrelenting poverty and destructive competition for precious natural resources. Icke's critics can be pretty hard on him, but I think his message deserves a hearing. I want to live in a world where David Icke can say and write what he believes and where I am free to say and write what I think of what he believes.
No room left for cowards..........2006-09-07
This is a great and challenging book, not for the faint of heart. David Icke presents a vision of the world which is radically different from the one which we are spoonfed from cradle to grave. Think of the courage it takes to get up on the world stage and bring forth this kind of information. People who pan Icke (and others in the truth movement) are nothing more than staid cowards, unwilling to integrate and adapt...worst of all, unwilling to listen and think these things through. Bottom line: read this book and pass it on to friends; time is running short and our freedoms are eroding before our eyes. It's time to wake up and rise to our true and magnificent human potential...and Icke is here to help on us our way.

Microsoft Secrets: How the World's Most Powerful Software Company Creates Technology, Shapes Markets and Manages People
ASIN: 074321580X |
Book Description
The world's leading expert on the global software industry and coauthor of the bestseller Microsoft Secrets reveals the inner workings of software giants like IBM, Microsoft, and Netscape and shows what it takes to create, develop, and manage a successful company -- in good times and bad -- in the most fiercely competitive business in the world.
In the $600 billion software industry it is the business, not the technology, that determines success or failure. This fact -- one that thousands of once glamorous start-ups have unhappily discovered for themselves -- is the well-documented conclusion of this enormously readable and revealing new book by Michael Cusumano, based on nearly twenty years of research and consulting with software producers around the world.
Cusumano builds on dozens of personal experiences and case studies to show how issues of strategy and organization are irrevocably linked with those of managing the technology and demonstrates that a thorough understanding of these issues is vital to success. At the heart of the book Cusumano poses seven questions that underpin a three-pronged management framework. He argues that companies must adopt one of three basic business models: become a products company at one end of the strategic spectrum, a services company at the other end, or a hybrid solutions company in between. The author describes the characteristics of the different models, evaluates their strengths and weaknesses, and shows how each is more or less appropriate for different stages in the evolution of a business as well as in good versus bad economic times. Readers will also find invaluable Cusumano's treatment of software development issues ranging from architecture and teams to project management and testing, as well as two chapters devoted to what it takes to create a successful software start-up. Highlights include eight fundamental guidelines for evaluating potential software winners and Cusumano's probing analysis, based on firsthand knowledge, of ten start-ups that have met with varying degrees of success.
The Business of Software is timely essential reading for managers, programmers, entrepreneurs, and others who follow the global software industry.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome !.......2007-07-20
Cusumano shows us what we, IT professionals, should know about business of software. He also shows us, in a very simple manner, what we must really know about software and its value chain.
Excellent book.......2007-05-01
This book is like a text book. Excellent source of information. Too much emphasis on Microsoft but when this book was written, Microsoft was at the top of their field.
Great insight into the world of enterprise software business.......2007-01-08
Well written, detailed, and insightful, best describe this book. Very helpful for any ISV or software product development manager. Cusamano, having served many of the companies he chronicles in this book, provides a uniquely human "insiders look" into the heart of these monolithic software titans. His insight and clear understanding of trends and business models in the often obscured and esoteric space of enterprise software is incredibly helpful to any "little guy" eager to learn how the "big guys" do it.
Excellent Read.......2006-03-31
The Business of Software is an excellent read and growth tool for seasoned practitioners. Organized in three major sections it explores:
(1) Product vs. services vs. hybrid software organizations' strengths and weaknesses, and how they can change over time (think about your company...!).
(2) Software development strategies and outcomes. At first glance, this section seems less relevant - until you find yourself defending why your latest release is waaaaay late... There are some excellent ideas here that can apply to the creation and roll-out of "core" demos.
(3) Entrepreneurship - successes, failures, and ongoing question marks - the author explores what key factors contribute to the end result. The case studies at the end of this section can serve as virtual mirrors onto one's own organization.
This is good and useful reading, particularly for those who seek to move upwards in their organizations or are contemplating joining a new or emerging company.
Book's value is in provactive questions.......2006-03-13
The most useful sections for technology marketers are in Chapter 2 about strategy, where Cusumano asks provocative questions that will give you a new way of looking at your products, services and company direction.
Also useful is Chapter 4 on best practices, which will give you some benchmarks for comparing your operations and development activities to industry leaders.
Much of the book focuses on presenting detailed analysis of the rise and fall of companies during the technology boom and bust in recent years. The stories can be interesting, but it seems to me that information is getting dated given the challenges that face technology companies today.

Suze Orman's face and name are more prominent on the cover of her new money guide than its title, The Road to Wealth. And why not? Orman has parlayed her popular renown as both a New York Times bestselling author and video-age financial guru into an undeniable position of respect and trust when it comes to matters of dollars and sense. This time she presents an encyclopedic guide to the various components of one's overall financial life--from managing debt and owning a home to making investments and preparing to pass it all along--and she does so in the clear and confident style to which her fans have become accustomed. "Here is what you need to know," she writes at the outset. "Answers to the questions you have been asking, as well as the questions you should have been asking, delivered in the most complete, straightforward way I know." While the concise text moves logically from "creating a strong financial foundation to amassing assets and protecting them from common mistakes and periods of economic downturn," this is not meant to be read from cover to cover. Rather, it is a ready bookshelf reference for planning and sorting out common finance concerns, like how to calculate the mortgage payment you can best afford, determine what Medicare will pay toward nursing care, decide between retirement plan options, and similar matters of personal importance. --Howard Rothman
Book Description

This a book for those who have money problems as well as those in the know. Suze always has new information to offer. A most have book for those interested in money.
The Road to Wealth: A Comprehensive Guide to Your Money.......2007-08-24
What an amazing book !!!! At 40, I know nothing of financing. Religiously living paycheck to paycheck and raising young children, life gets to be overwhelming. This book has empowered me to look at my finances, my life in a whole new light. There is a way to help my children. I wish Suze Orman could be my financial planner. I have learned so much and yet I have so much more to learn thanks to her advice, insight and experience. This book is an incredible beginning for my journey. If only I had known earlier.
Not really worth what I paid for it.......2007-06-20
But it did include some information that's nice to know. My investment strategy is a bit more aggressive and this audio-book leaned conservative. Then again, I wasn't familiar with Suze Orman before purchasing this book. So all in all, I'd say it's a decent read for most people, though I would have probably benefited more from her "Young and Broke."
Good overview.......2007-05-13
Book is giving a good overview on many different options for investing money. Writing is fluent and easily to understand also for newcomers in this field. There is no difficult language. Reading this will improve any discussion you might have with a so called financial advisor.
Suze is awesome.......2007-02-24
Suze really knows how to explain finances in a easy way for anybody to understand. I liked it so much I told my boss about it who bought it and also I bought the book for my father who is close to retirement.
Thanks,
Suze

Book Description
An indispensable quick-check guide to saving money and headaches during home renovations
Lured by skyrocketing real estate values, more Americans than ever are renovating their homes. Some have had some experience with home renovations. Many are trying their hands at it for the first time. Most are totally unprepared for the thousand-and-one pitfalls, screw-ups, and headaches that can plague a home improve project, including runaway costs, unscrupulous suppliers and contractors, arcane building codes, and more.
Written by America's #1 source of real estate know-how, Home Renovation Checklist is an indispensable guide to navigating the renovation process and keeping costs, time, and headaches involved to a minimum. Modeled after Irwin's bestselling Home Buyer's Checklist, this book is packed with hundreds of checklist questions (and answers) covering every detail of any home improvement project, including:
- Budgeting costs
- Dealing with contractors
- Obtaining financing
- Determining whether or not to do all or part of the renovations themselves
Customer Reviews:
Very Useful.......2006-07-11
This book is very useful in answering questions homeowners may have about renovating their homes. The format features questions, the answers "yes" or "no" with checkboxes next to them with room underneath for note taking, and a detailed explanation with tips and hints. For the most part this format works well, although I wish that author Robert Irwin had varied the answers a bit since not every question can be answered "yes" or "no", for example "when will you do the job?"
The first four chapters in the book focus on general questions about home renovations such as hiring a contractor and financing the job. The rest of the book focuses on certain areas to be renovated, for example there's one chapter on renovating the bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen; another on installing cabinets; and another on installing floors. This is really helpful since the homeowner can read just the chapter that focuses on the repair work they want to do. The questions that Irwin asks are very helpful and he doesn't hesitate to say whether or not you should tackle the job yourself or hire someone to do it.
Very useful.

Writer James Baldwin earnestly championed the civil rights movement in both his fiction and nonfiction, a fact which, coupled with his extraordinary writing talent, assured not only his historical importance, but also his place as one of the finest African American writers of his generation. Collected Essays is a comprehensive collection of his most memorable prose, including "Stranger in the Village," "The Harlem Ghetto," and "Many Thousands Gone." Clear in voice and vision, the essays communicate the emotions of an entire historical movement. Combining politics, prophecy, and passion, Baldwin's essays are truly as thought-provoking today as they were some 30 years ago.

A must for the Serious Scholar's library.......2006-07-22
This collection of Baldwin's writings is priceless because not only is it a showcase of an agile and fertile mind, it also brings together in a single volume some of his most popular and more famous as well as some of his less formal writings and speeches.
Always well ahead of his times, Baldwin's essays remain fresh and as relevant in today's more quiescent racial times as they were during the more troubled times of his life. They remain fresh because they tell in Baldwin's own inimical and elegant way, the deeper truths about our troubled racial past and present. Most of all they reflect how Baldwin used his quick and restless mind to critique the social and artistic scenes of our troubled era: His strategy, reflected in this collection, was always to mine the substance from the subtext upwards. Those of us who try to mimic his techniques can learn a lot from this and the companion volume of his collected works.
At the same time, Baldwin's psychological analysis remains unerring and at least as sharp as, if not sharper than those of some of his French contemporaries, including his friends and compatriots in the struggle, Franz Fanon and Jean Paul Sartre, who also were both not only revolutionaries and revolutionary thinkers like Baldwin, but also a Psychiatrist and a Philosopher, respectively.
No library on the history of race in America or France is complete without this well designed and well-organized volume. Five stars.
Like Nothing Else You've Read.......2005-06-03
A lot of reviewers have talked about owning this book if you are distinctly interested in collecting works by black authors or in black studies. I think that this book is an essential element to anyone's library, in particular people interested in the craft of writing. Toni Morrison calls Baldwin the greatest essayist of the 20th century and I couldn't agree more.
In this collection of essays, it becomes clear that Baldwin has truly perfected the craft of the essay. Not only is Baldwin's content, his concepts of honesty and truth, of light and dark, right and wrong, of white and black, and much more straight up revolutionary, but he manages to have his content reflected in the craft and style of each essay, which should really be the goal of all writers.
More than anything, Baldwin has an exquisite ability to reveal a complex truth in a simple concise way. All of these essays, indeed all of Baldwin's works, have one common thread. And that is that TRUTH is found within contradiction, because contradiction is honest. I think anyone who browses this page should immediately try and at least check this out of their libary (though it's definitely worth owning, every time I reread it I discover new things) because it really will effect you in meaningful ways.
A great book -- A worthy part of a great series.......2004-02-23
I love James Baldwin--I think he's a tremendous writer, so Toni Morrison could hardly go wrong in selecting essays for this volume. All of the selections are excellent. Notes of a Native Son contains a touching eulogy for Richard Wright ("Alas, Poor Richard"), explaining the lonliness and problems Mr. Wright had at the end of his life. Baldwin displays his tremendous range as both a political commentator and a literary critic. The Devil Finds Work, in particular, is very insightful--and several parts humourous.
What I don't understand--and why I struck a star off this collection--is why Ms. Morrison did not include "Evidence of Things Unseen," Baldwin's analysis of the Atlanta child murders from the early eighties. Perhaps Library of America is planning later volumes of Baldwin's works--The companion volume to these essays is his "Early Novels," most notably "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and "Giovani's Room." I can't imagine that Library of America would not produce a volume including Mr. Baldwin's later works--especially "Just Above my Head."
This particular edition is well worth having--despite the price. First, this is a good collection of Baldwin's essays, many of which are difficult to find. Second, the Library of America really does a commendable job in paper quality and binding. This is not a leather bound edition on 50 pound paper, so stiff you can't open it and printed so the back binding looks impressive on your bookshelf--this is tightly bound, cardboard cover that lies flat, and is easy to read. The paper is not heavy--but acid free, and tear resistant. The Library of America series are good collections that are meant to be read many times, by many people--these books hold up very well.
I am afraid that Mr. Baldwin's works and opinions may fall by the wayside as time passes. The fact that Ms. Morrison--one of our best and most respected authors--put these collections together will certainly help keep Mr. Baldwin's works alive. But if you have any interest in what it means to be African American--in the twenties, to contemporary america--through even tomorrow--You need to read and appreciate Mr. Baldwin's insights. And you will also enjoy his clear, careful, and pointed writing.

This book was very interesting and i enjoyed the courage of a young black man to stand up for his rights.
A painful, powerful experience.......2001-10-11
In Egypt, I met an extraordinary American.
"I was born in New York, but have only lived in pockets of it. In Paris, I lived in all parts of the city - on the Right Bank and on the Left, among the bourgeoisie and among les miserables, and knew all kinds of people from pimps and prostitutes in Pigalle to Egyptian bankers in Nueilly. This may sound unprincipled or even obscurely immoral: I found it healthy. I love to talk to people, all kinds of people, and almost everyone, as I hope we still know, loves a man who loves to listen," he said.
"The perpetual dealing with people very different from myself caused a shattering in me of preconceptions I scarcely knew I held. This reassessment, which can be very painful, is also very valuable."
His name is Mr. Baldwin, and I cherish this new acquaintance because his ideas have had such profound impact on my views of Egypt. I wanted to know the people, but as I reach out for them, sometimes, I'm shocked by what I see. I see people sleeping on the concrete patios along the Nile - many of them have migrated from the farmlands because they can make more money for their families if they work in Cairo. But desert nights can be bitter cold in January, and it cuts my heart. Yet, Mr. Baldwin's message is well heeded. The same problems of inner city growth that come with development in Egypt also came with development in Britain one hundred years ago. American inner city schools and slums still reflect this challenge.
Would I have walked into the slums of Chicago if I were there? Would I have strolled through the southwest side of Kansas City or east St. Louis? Would I have walked into the anti-developing city blocks of L.A. if I were in America? Of course not. So why is it that traveling abroad opens my eyes to poverty in America? Why couldn't I see it when I was there? I don't know why this happens, but James Baldwin was right - absolutely right when he said that this reassessment, which can be very painful is also very valuable.
I have been told that the housing shortage in Egypt provided the impetus for many people to move into the spacious mausoleums in the old city graveyard. The international visitors call it, "The City of the Dead," and tourists go there and gawk at poverty creating a makeshift freak show out of human suffering. Then I learned that the housing shortage in Los Angeles provided the impetus for many people to move into mausoleums, but no one goes to gawk at them. In fact, there seems to be a kind of American denial that such things could ever happen in the land of milk and honey.
As I hear of people talking about human rights violations in Egypt, I think of the title of James Baldwin's book: Nobody Knows My Name. I think of James Byrd who was dragged to death behind a pickup truck. I think of the threats of millennium violence that frightened black American families so much that they bought guns and stayed home for the New Year. I think of the tiny city in Texas who voted Spanish as their city's official language and then received death threats from all over the nation. Of course, if you asked any American about human rights violations, they would tell you that this is something that happens in China or Africa. It's a painful realization that it might happen in MY country. Growing up in the American school system, I came to idolize Abraham Lincoln's courage and George Washington's integrity. The universal ideas of human value and dignity that we believe to be inalienable are not, as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. so wisely told us, being applied universally in our country. These facts go against the ideals and values of our nation - they don't support the concepts of the free and the brave.
"It is a complex fate to be an American," Henry James observed. James Baldwin awakened me to that complexity in a way so subtle, so gentle and yet, so powerfully painful.
He awakened me to the hard realities of the American people, most of whom will never read or digest his work. They would dismiss him. But his vision is not to be dismissed. His writing illustrates that the responsibility of this future lies in the hands of blind people. People who refuse to see American neighborhoods and American people for what they really are. We can't improve until we accept the starting point. This lofty ideal of what we should be and blind obstinacy to what we are is killing us.
"Europe has what we do not have yet," Baldwin said. "A sense of the mysterious and inexorable limits of life, a sense, in a word, of tragedy. And we have what they sorely need: a new sense of life's possibilities."
Egypt has what we do not yet have - a clear and present sense of unity - an admiration for sacrifice for the whole of the group - the nuclear family, the extended family, the community. And we have absolutely nothing that Egypt needs, except, if you ask the younger generation: Nike shoes. In fact, this is precisely what Egyptians do not need. They do not need the destructive, greed-inspiring and greed-glorifying economic development of the West.
"In this endeavor to wed the vision of the Old World with that of the New, it is the writer, not the statesman, who is our strongest arm. Though we do not wholly believe it yet, the interior life is a real life, and the intangible dreams of people have tangible effect on the world." - James Baldwin

Not just for those who work in cubes!.......2006-11-22
Those who inhabit corner offices would do well to read it and gain insights into the "unwritten rules" that may be getting in the way of their company's progress. We need rules to avoid chaos but occasionally we need to purge the dumb ones. Management and staff could use this book to help open the kind of dialogue that would help everyone realize they are all in the same boat. Once that happens the boat could be streamlined for success by dumping excess rules. Highly recommended by this CEO.
Resourceful and entertaining!.......2006-11-21
I found this book to be very entertaining, as well as a good resource for business life. Anyone who has worked in an office environment for any length of time will relate to many of his analogies. Plus, it just plain made me laugh! Those of us who live in cubicles 90% of our day can use a good laugh now and then, don't you agree? I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who works in an office or knows someone who does! It's much more than a good laugh, however. Rich hits the nail on the head with his many great ideas illustrating how to be successful in the professional world.
A "MUST HAVE" for anyone in the business world .......2006-11-05
Rich Moran's book is a "bible" for business professionals. He provides tips and advice based on true-to-life business world experience. I have worked for a large corporation for the past 25 years and I have recently purchased a number of copies of this book to give to the newly hired college graduates who have recently joined our company.
Pithy, Witty and Wise.......2006-10-31
Moran has done it again - a must read for anyone at any level in any organization. Remember all those 'unwritten rules' that people keep telling you about? Rest easy: they are all here for you in one place. This is a great book for those first starting out in Corporate America, as well as for those of us already here who need a reminder every now and again. Get it for your whole team!
It's all in one nice package!.......2006-10-16
What a find! This book is loaded with easy to digest wit and wisdom for the work place (and life). When you're looking for just a few words to inspire yourself or others you're bound to find them in Nut, Bolts, and Jolts. I read it once quickly from cover to cover but now keep one by my nightstand and one in my office. When I need a little jolt I pick it up and usually find just the right few words to get myself back on track. Many friends and colleagues will find this gift-wrapped and under the tree this Christmas.

A wonderful collection of essays -- don't miss it!.......1999-06-10
I could not disagree more with the cynical, pseudo-intellectual author of the Kirkus Review of this wonderful book. OF COURSE Mr. De Vinck's essays do not "accurately" depict the harsher realities of childhood -- that is not his objective. The essays read more like fairy tales for adults, spun out of the simple stuff of everyday life -- the small, insignificant events that each of us, no matter how dreadful our childhoods were, still remember and from which we can gain strength and understanding as adults. This book will always have a prominent place on my bookshelf, and I find myself turning to it again and again, whenever I need to be reminded of the important things in life. I highly recommend it, as well as Mr. De Vinck's other books.

Customer Reviews:
What Every Household Should Own.......2007-05-13
This book is a well-researched, knowledgeable, and informative guide that every household should own especially parents. It's certainly no substitute for a primary care physician, but it's the perfect source of diagnosis for minor things such as what to do during mild back pain, headaches, colds, flu, etc. It also covers allergies, nose and eye problems, cold sores, urinary tract infection, gall bladder, stomach aches, indigestion, etc. It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the material, so if and when the time comes that you need to use this resource, you'll be a little familiar with your symptoms and the book. It's the perfect addition to a first aid kit. It's clear and easy to read but not so vague that it's unhelpful. I recommend this to everyone!
Provides fast, easy answers to common health-care questions .......2004-11-10
From addressing everyday health problems and minor injuries to healing faster and managing chronic conditions effectively, What Nurses Know And Doctors Don't Have Time To Tell You provides fast, easy answers to common health-care questions nurses hear most often. Nurse Patricia Carroll has more than 20 years experience as an RN and ER nurse: she's chosen the most common patient questions and provides treatment plans and solutions for patients and families alike.
What Nurses Know.......2004-07-22
Outstanding - and I am a nurse. The advice is for any one who has a parent or is a parent and helps make sense out of the world of medicine. Physicians are overloaded and Ms. Carroll helps docs help patients. I wish physicians would give copies to their patients!
What Patients Should Know But Don't.......2004-06-03
As an attorney who deals with medical issues every day, I found Pat Carroll's book to be and excellent blend of science and common sense advice to patients and their families. Whether the subject is safety when traveling, immunizations, or how to get the most out of your relationship with your physician, the book dispenses excellent advice.
New mothers will find the book very helpful, and so will those who may lack formal education in health subjects. Like her advice not to clean out cuts with peroxide, the advice she dispenses often goes against "the way we've always done it," but it never goes against established medical and nursing science. Readers will learn many things they should know, but most likely do not.
This is a book that everyday consumers and patient educators will find priceless.
Impressive!.......2004-06-02
Ms. Carroll has done an incredible job of explaining medical conditions so they can be easily understood by the lay person. More than this, she describes common sense treatments that can be implemented at home, versus when the condition warrants a call to the health care provider. Signs and symptoms necessitating an immediate trip to the ER are also listed. The book begins with a terrific explanation of the differences between nursing practice and the practice of medicine that dispels the myth that nurses are the handmaidens of the physician. She uses the principles of sound nursing judgment in the advice she gives throughout the book. Many resources (including her own website) are listed for further information. Written in a warm, down to earth style, this is an invaluable book for lay persons, and a reference that nurses can recommend to others with confidence.
