My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

When Jack and Annie found out that they were going to China, they went straight to the treehouse. They met Morgan there, and she told them that they had to save a library in China. The dragon king was going to burn all the books, because he didn't like them. Jack and Annie saw a huge map of the castle where the emporer lived and they used it to help them find the library. In the end, Jack and Annie saved the library and were heroes again.

I liked this book because of the Terra Cotta soldiers (we have one of these at home !), the Chinese hats that Jack and Annie wore, and the dragon kings clothes. And I think I'm a good judge of Chinese things, since I was born in China !

The Trip to China.......2005-04-13

This story take place on China in the 1970, the boy and the girl were ready to go to China and they go in to get the bamboo book that is on the city, and they find two Chinese people. They take them to the city and they see people selling fish, the boy told them if they can take them to the library to find the bamboo book that has all the secrets of China.
This book is mostly about two kids that go to China to look for the bamboo book that is in the city of China. They went to the library with the secret library card and finally they found the bamboo book.

In my opinion, I think its a very good book because, the trip to China and the Great Wall and the Dragon King's tomb.

Most kids read Little House on the Prairie first, but this book actually is the first book in the series. In this Little House story book, readers get a taste of the 1870s midwest and join Laura, her Ma, and her Pa, and her sisters at the little house in the big woods.

An Absolutely Charming Story.......2007-08-14

Writen during the Great Depression, "Little House in the Big Woods" is Laura Ingalls Wilder's memoir of growing up in Wisconsin in the years immediately following the Civil War. The book chronicles a year in the life of Laura's family. The writing is absolutely charming in its simplicity and I found myself caught up in the details of the family's material culture. I was reminded of Eric Sloane's "Diary of an Early American Boy", another classic of the genre.

I think memoirs are better heard than read. The narrator, Cherry Jones is a charasmatic performer whose voice twinkles with humor and warmth. In addition, the recording also includes a violin accompaniment to Cherry Jones' singing of the many songs that appear in the story. This is a beautiful recording and I give it my highest recommendation.

My husband just finished reading this great book to our 4y/o daughter and she really liked it. In my opinion, the "Full Color" version is the best choice when reading this book to younger kids. This version uses high quality white paper with a glossy finish.

I bought this book hoping to get some decorating ideas for our kids' rooms. It was not at all what I was expecting. It gave me a few ideas for storage, but not worth buying.

A Good Book - depending on your needs........2007-01-11

I thought this book would be about kids BEDrooms, but it's encompasses all kid spaces. It's great if you are building a home, remodeling or have the space to create as they do. I was disappointed that there wasn't more about kids bedrooms, but I picked up a FREE copy of the Pottery Barn Kids catalogue at my local store and that had what I was looking for.

The Best Kids Room Book.......2006-03-22

I own almost all books on decorating kids rooms and this is by far the best. It has great tips on how to use everyday and/or easy to make items to make kids rooms fun and fabulous. There are a lot of items in the book that they sell but they definitely do not push their product.

I am NOT a fan of Pottery Barn in general, as a matter of fact, I just bought the "Work Spaces" book and found it to be awful, sort of junky old stuff. However, this book is a MUST if you are decorating for your kids. Very practical and useful. My 4 year old son and I looked at every page and he loved every boys room and playroom in this book.

This book was not what I expected at all. Most kids books are full of outlandish or impractical but beautiful rooms. The rooms in this book are definitely not what I would call beautiful, but are very fun and practical for your kids. These are definitely not showplaces. The rooms they illustrate include a bathroom, bedrooms, a playroom, and art spaces.

A word of caution, though. This book does not have several bedrooms, playrooms, or bathrooms. It has a couple of each, but great advice to make your childs room great fun!

Do-It-Yourself Heaven!!!.......2007-09-21

What a wonderful, ingenious book. I am shocked this book isn't more widely known, particularly in homeschooling circles (at least, the ones I moved in), where the wealth of creative ideas for making construction toys out of common, inexpensive, everyday materials would seem right up most homeschoolers' alleys. These materials can be used to make simple, elegant, and incredibly appealing projects.

There is also an excellent discussion of structures, both in nature and man-made, of buildings, of bridges and towers and so on.

It is all absolutely fascinating and I'm going to plan a class for the spring using this book as the spine.

Well worth the money. An amazing resource.

There are projects in this book for young people age 5 through college age, and even for the young-at-heart. Many of the projects use materials commonly found in the home. A child who begins with simple projects and advances to complex projects would be learning geometry and physics and the basic building blocks of architecture and the construction industry. I could see this book used by children who enjoy building projects or as a resource for family nights or home schooling or as a grandparenting resource. Congratulations, Steven Caney!

Steven Caney's Ultimate Building Book is not only a book about how to build "stuff," nor is it a book of "stuff" to build, it is a comprehensive book that answers nearly every question a child (and many adults) would think to ask about structures, how they are built, and how they can do it themselves. Do you want to know what type of tent you see at the side of the lake? Did you know there were actually many types of tents? Who wants to build a greenhouse? Build people out of pasta? How about recipes for various types of modeling clay?

With loads of information about structures from nests to castles and back to musical instruments, this book is a one-stop shop for the creative thinker. My six-year-old hauls around this nearly 600-page tome like it weighs nothing and will lie on his tummy, turning page after page and asking questions for an indefinite period--right up until he finds the next thing he'd like to try to create, and then he's off.

An interesting tidbit that surprised me, but doesn't seem to bother the kids, is that all the photos are black and white and the children in them are from several decades. Though, quite frankly, had the photos been only of the current generation, they would be out of date long before you'll get rid of the book. This one's a keeper.

Kids' Rooms is a mixed bag: it contains some good design and safety tips, and it is one of the most attractive books in print on decorating kids' rooms. But it also contains tips like this: "If you prefer to use blankets on your child's bed, layer them for added warmth, adjusting the number according to the season." So although one might be tempted to regard this book as symptomatic of a slew of irritating trends (parents' urge to control and systematize children's lives, publishers' urge to stretch what could have been a very good magazine article to the breaking point of a costly full-length book), let's instead take a look at what it offers.

Jennifer Lévy's gorgeous photographs of gorgeous rooms, for one thing. If these beautifully lit, enthusiastically gotten-up bedrooms don't inspire you to cross the threshold into the most forbidden room in the house--ignoring the "DO NOT ENTER. THIS MEANS YOU, MOM" sign on the door--then nothing will. You'll be going at it with stencils and chalkboard paint in no time. The Bon Jovi posters in your 13-year-old's purple-and-pink room won't stand a chance.

The book also features several easy, step-by-step projects like lacy lampshades (spray-painted with a doily stencil), a harlequin-design floor (although the instructions specify using polyurethane varnish, which is expressly banned from use in kids' rooms by the "safety tip" four pages later), a folding screen room-divider (canvas stretchers form the frame, and handy patch pockets are sewn onto each panel), an easy-wipe-up vinyl "play tablecloth" with pinked edges and decorative weights at the corners, a dreamy organza pillow sham, and a handprint-decorated light-switch plate. --Liana Fredley

The first 2/3 of the book deals with decorating elements -- light, color, furniture, and so on. If you are looking primarily for room after room of pictures to inspire you, this is not the one for you. There are only 9 projects in the 156 pages, and very little instruction on how to acheive a look, so if you are looking for a primer on mimicing a picture in the book -- its not for you. And as one reader noted, this manual is heavily girl-room centric. There are only 11 rooms profiled -- 8 of which are for girls only (highly reliant on pinks and purples, lace and sheers). The few "boy" rooms are nearer to gender neutral and are underdressed compared to the rest.

A Waste Of Money.......2005-10-08

Basically I found this book showing pictures of what not to do. When I am looking to decorate my child's room, I would not want it to look like most of the pictures in the book. Also most of the pictures were geared towards little girls and not boys. The book was just empty. I read/skimmed it in ten minutes and then threw it aside, thinking to myself, what a waste. If you want something special for your children's rooms don't waste your time and money on this one!

Simply the best book on this topic out there!.......2001-04-30

Jennifer Levy's book on kid's rooms is a much needed breath of fresh air in the home decorating book world. Looking for a book to inspire and teach me how to decorate my kid's room, I was shocked to find so many books with strange, difficult and outright unattractive ideas. This book is NOT one of those.

My favorite idea in the book is the folding screen with pockets...living in New York City, where space is a real premium, I found that I could slip books, toys and other items in the pockets while use the screen as a natural divider. Jennifer's instructions were simple, easy and the photographs were gorgeous.

So-So at Best.......2007-08-09

My son is a very advanced reader for his age (a 7 yo consistently reading at a 4-5 grade level) and I was looking for a series of books to challenge him and get him interested in reading chapter books. My son prefers non-fiction over fiction, so I thought this would be a good series since it weaves factual learning into the fictional storyline. However, I must say that I am extremely disappointed. This book did not hold my son's attention at all, and it was extremely boring to read out loud together. Most disappointing to me was the horrible writing style. The book is full of short, even fragmented sentences. I feel this sets a terrible example for children just learning to read and write. An example from page 19:

"Jack stepped forward. He put out his arm. Very cautiously. He brushed his hand down the creature's neck."

Another example from page 22:

"The creature fixed his eyes on Annie. His long jaws were opening and closing. Like a giant pair of scissors."

I mean, come on. Why couldn't the author just combine the last 2 sentences into one grammatically correct sentence?

I do agree with other reviews that this series may attract those children who are reluctant to read. If you are looking for books with substance that will be cherished for years to come, this may not be the best choice.

Great Chapter Read Aloud..........2007-07-02

My children 5 and 3 love this series. They are so excited to hear what happens next in Jack and Annie's adventure. The book is simple enough for young listeners to follow along. However, be prepared to add your OWN drama with voice intonations and expression. We truly enjoyed Dinosaurs Before Dark so much that we have bought the next 2 books in the series. Also, check out the research companions for each book. This has brought non-fiction excitement into our read alouds as well.

This was given as a present to the Mumbulla School for Stiner Education. All the girls and one boy who have read it so far have told me that they loved the book. They are also asking to hire the other books in the searies that they havent read yet.

Of all the Little House books, this one seems to evoke the strongest emotions. Whether it's cold, hunger or just admiration for the family. This book is an experience and one that you'll remember long after you're done.

More than all of that, this is a book to listen to. From the beginning of the whir of the mowing machine to the singing on the last page, you hear this book. The blizzards howl and screech, threads sing together like music, voices of strangers in the street, the coffee mill grinds on endlessly. Pa loses his "voice" when his hands are too roughened by twisting hay to play the violin. Throughout all is the music made by singing, speaking and the routine of life, against the voices in the blizzard. Many times the family sang or recited in order to hear themselves and fight against the howling winds.

When I first read this book as a girl, I remembered the cold and how Laura had to twist that hay just to survive and stay warm. Now as an adult, I admire the family dynamics. Caroline and Charles always stayed positive and strong. They didn't argue, they only figured out a way to get them by. When the weather got any of the family down, someone else gave them courage. Laura really developed in this story as well. It was the first time that I could recall her using Ma's words, "alls well that ends well" after the slough incident. She showed more responsibility and discipline than she had to this point.

The story is simply told, not with big words but with a big view on life. The pacing keeps you turning pages, even without our modern day cliffhangers. The best part is this book is clean and portrays good values while not being preachy. I would recommend this to anyone of any age. Just make sure you snuggle before reading because when you're done, you'll feel as if you had gone through it as well.

if you like reading books about animals and people who work hard to get what they want,then you will like this book. I like this story,personally, because it tells a story about a family caught in a blizzard with little food and no places to go to get food because there are no trains and there is hardly anything for them to do but wait. You should try this book because you will love the story about a family who is fighting to save their lives. I guarantee you will enjoy reading "The Long Winter".

A very cold book.......2006-09-23

This book makes me shiver everytime we read it. It kept blizzarding and nothing ever happened much, except for they thought the train was going to come and then it blizzarded again, so it couldn't. The coldness was described well, though, and I liked the part where the Indian was right. If you want to cool off on a hot summer day, I highly suggest reading this.

A good book, but..........2001-04-04

...it only has one design for each component. We were hoping for a book that had several designs in it (at least for a play yard). The play yard plan included is the one you see on the front of the book. It also includes one plan each for a playhouse, covered sandbox, balance beam, picnic table, and teeter-totter. The book is still VERY helpful on tools needed, wood to choose and other basics, but the materials lists and such won't work if you aren't going to build exactly what's in the book.

Good How-to for Beginner Backyard Builders.......2000-10-21

We were originally interested in this book for an easy, sturdy way to build a seesaw, but the plans for a complete gym set and surrounding equipment were easy to follow, also. The materials list and cutting guides are excellent and we had little to no waste. There were plenty of illustrations and our projects came out super! More advanced builders might find the simplicity tedious and the projects limited, but for a beginner trying to save a few bucks by doing-it-yourself, it was great.

Good in some aspects, but lacking in others........2000-08-02

If you are looking for a book which features plans for multiple types of play yards, then this is not the book for you. The book does have some redeming features, however. The first couple of chapters discuss basics such as useful tools, pros and cons of different materials, and standard safety practices. It was these first few chapters which I found very useful as I began to design a play yard for my children. The rest of the book describes how to build the play yard featured on the book's cover. If you're looking for a solid, fun play yard and don't have creative aspirations of your own, then the featured play yard is, indeed, very functioanl and fun. If, however, you're looking for many different styles and ideas to incorporate into your own design, then look elsewhere. Overall, the book was a good starting point to learn more about what goes into a play yard.

no selection of structures.......2000-06-09

I was very dissapointed with this book. It only has one "master" plan which includes a climbing structure, slide and swingset. The "optional" plans are simply the elimination of one of the master plan segments (e.g. without the swingset). Also, the plan is quite elaborate and expensive to build. It may be good for a church or school, but more than a typical family could undertake or afford.

Highly recommend!.......2000-03-11

My partner and I are beginning to intermediate woodworker/builders. We found this book very informative. It shows very easy to read illustrations for various projects, from fairly simple balance beams and swing set to more complex tower structures. It also has recommendations and modifications for younger and older kids. What I liked about it, as a beginner, is that each project is simply illustrated and diagrammed with a materials list right down to the nuts and bolts! The author also has information and diagrams on how to use the various power equipment needed to perform the work plus a wealth of safety information. If you like the look of handsome, well constructed, wooden play structures this is the book for you.

Great book for kids.......2006-05-25

Mom's House, Dad's House for Kids is terrific! The author knows how to speak to kids in a way that helps them understand and cope with the changes that come with separation, divorce, and remarriage. The focus is positive and proactive: things kids can do to feel better, tips on how to talk to parents about problems, strategies for addressing and resolving problems, a framework for exploring consequences when making choices, answers to kids' unasked questions, and more. There's even a section giving answers to the questions that kids hesitate to ask. The book doesn't end with the divorce, but continues with what to expect and how to cope when the family changes once again into a stepfamily. The tone, the format, and the content are super child-friendly. A must-read for kids whose parents are separating, divorcing, dating, or remarrying.

So kids not only survive, but thrive.......2006-05-07

This book can be a young person's full-time guide not just to the logistics, emotions, and decisions that arise during parents' divorce, but also to growing up strong under any conditions. As a mother whose daughter was 9 at the time of divorce (or until she turned 18 or so - she's an adult now), I would have bought two copies - one for me and one for her - so that each of us could have it handy 24/7 and write our own marginal notes. Three copies. One for dad, too. Arguments may be commonplace during and after divorce, but no one could argue with the solid foundation and practical value of Dr. Ricci's ideas or her profound love of children and families. It should be in the waiting room of every therapist, as well.

Understanding My Parent's Divorce.......2006-04-03

When I was 7, my parents got divorced. I am now 18, and looking back I realize how confused I was about the breakup. Recently, my dad gave me an advanced copy of Mom's House, Dad's House for Kids, and asked for my opinion on the book. With the intention of only skimming a few pages, I found myself unable to put it down, and read the book in its entirety. I was amazed at the clear, simple, and compassionate way Dr. Ricci answered questions about divorce that baffled me in the past. The thing that impressed me most about Mom's House, Dad's House for Kids was the consistent positive message it conveyed. Without preaching, the book encourages children to make and fulfill positive goals, respect themselves and others, and above all come to acceptance about their parent's divorce. I know this book would have helped me in the past, and I would highly recommend it to any child going through divorce.

The Knight at Dawn.......2007-05-03

This book was fantastic. Jack and Annie went back to when knights were around. They walked around a castle. They fell in a moat and the knight saved them.

I learned some interesting facts. The knights wore armor when they traveled long and dangerous distances. A helmet could weigh up to 40 pounds. I learned that drawbridges crossed moats. Moats helped protect the castle from enemies.

I would recommend this book for three reasons. One reason is you can learn lots of stuff about knights and castles. Another reason is because Jack and Annie can go back in time and have an adventure. A third reason because Jack was protecting his sister Annie when they fell in the moat.

The Knight at Dawn is an interesting book about two kids.

Do you want to read a book that's really mysterious? Well, the book Magic Tree House #2 is the book! Do you wish that your tree house could take you wherever you want to go? Well, Jack and Annie have a tree house like that. Once they got to the creepy castle, with a knight. When they got there they got shocked because they got caught by a knight. You have to find out what happens next.

What I really like about the book is when Jack and Annie ride on the knight's horse.

I would recommend this book to people who like Magic Tree House books.

I liked this book. It had a lot of exciting parts.It was interesting and funny. I liked the characters Jack and Annie. They went back to the time of Knights and found a castle. The character Jack reminded me of a friend I know. Jack try's to take care of his little sister Annie and my friend likes to take care of the little kids too.

I think The Knight at Dawn is a great book. People who like knights, castles and adventure would really like this book a lot. The main characters' names are Jack, a ten-year-old boy and Annie, a seven old girl. Jack and Annie are brother and sister in the book. The Magic Tree House stories are about Jack and Annie going back in time to different time periods in every book. My favorite part of the book is when they got put in jail. They escape and got out of the castle and go home.
I recommend this book for people who like adventure stories.
