All great blessings come from being at peace. When the day is over, go to sleep. Never sit up worrying about tomorrow. Work hard and let God do the rest. I always say these words at night: "I can sleep tonight because God is awake!" Relax. Rest easy.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a therapeutic technique designed to counter extreme emotional reactions — before they lead to overwhelming anger, depression, anxiety, and stress-related ailments. An eclectic mix of cognitive-behavioral techniques, skills training, Zen, and existentialism, DBT helps readers pay attention to their emotions, assess their blocks to controlling them, become less judgmental of themselves when they lose control, and ultimately eliminate overpowering feelings. Worksheets and assessment exercises round out this breakthrough program.

4 out of 5 stars Dialectical Behavior Therapy.......2007-09-25

Having just been diagnosed with BPD, I have found books such as this very helpful as my husband and I discuss the best way for our family to deal with my sensitivity to emotions and mood changes. My oldest son is also displaying behaviors indicative of BPD and we are looking for help for him, too.

must use w/ the original great--Linehan's DBT skills training workbook. i like these exercises, but you will need to preview before each class and come up w/ a solid tie-in w/ the DBT skills...it just doesn't stand alone in a way that is useful to clients.

5 out of 5 stars You can teach an old woman new skills.......2007-06-10

You can teach 4 year olds to count. You can teach an old dog to fetch. At 45 I thought there was no help for me. I just couldn't change. But this book helped me to learn the skills I needed to get along with myself my family and society. It is dry reading but keep at it and you will find a new person within you.

5 out of 5 stars Great Workbook.......2007-05-19

I have been having trouble controling my emotions my whole life. I was never taught to control my emotions, so it has always been a struggle for me. Following the books guidelines and working one chapter at a time has helped me so much. It has improved my relationship with my boyfriend and given me a happier outlook on life knowing that my emotions are part of me but don't have to be who I am. I highly reccommend it, it's just like doing a workbook for a english or psych class. I also purchased the Self-Esteem Workbook. It's been just as helpful to me as this one.

5 out of 5 stars RELIEF.......2007-02-28

This book is a joy to read. It offers (in simple to understand language) an understanding of your emotions and many tools on how to handle them. I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially if you grew up in a family where your parents had emotional problems and were not able to offer you guidance or validation of your emotions while growing up.

It's a great treasure.....tb

5 out of 5 stars Commitment, Character, Competence.......2007-07-31

The advice in this book extends beyond the professional world and echoes in everyday life. This makes sense; we don't live double-lives, and there exists no magic, secret formula for success in business, medicine, or raising kids. It comes down to basic human virtues.

Commitment. Character. Competence. These attributes fuel the engines of success in life.

It boggles the mind how many books or programs offer axiomatic platitudes such as "it's not what you know but who you know" or "success is what makes you happy, so be true to yourself."

None such wasteful advice finds its way into this book. Rather, Dr. Irwin points out the objective, observable standards that exist in life, and our need to continually evaluate ourselves and measure our choices against those standards.

As the book says; it's simple, but it isn't easy. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Run with the Bulls Without Getting Trampled.......2007-07-08

Tim Irwin's book, "Run with the Bulls," is by far the most insightful business book I have read this year. It causes you to take a look beneath the surface and determine how you can lead a life of significance and find meaning in your work. There are very few business books that take you to this level of personal reflection. "Run with the Bulls" is one of them.

5 out of 5 stars run with the bulls.......2007-04-19

"Run with the Bulls" offers a practical approach to finding meaning and fulfillment in our careers. Tim Irwin uses straightforward language to express complex ideas. He has an engaging way with personal anecdotes that serve both to clarify his themes and share aspects of his family life. One of the book's many pleasures is its frequent use of cultural references. Dr Irwin's interests range from "New Yorker" cartoons to TS Eliot to popular movies like "Groundhog Day." His experience as a psychologist has given him unique insight into the complex issues that so often derail our attempts to pursue excellence.

5 out of 5 stars If you are running your career you need this book.......2007-03-08

The best complete compilation and illustration of the keys to a great life and career.

5 out of 5 stars Great Stories with a Powerful Message.......2007-01-31

"Run with the Bulls" is hard book to put down. I savored each chapter. The author tells real life stories as the foundation for a powerful message on principles of leadership. After reading the book I passed it on to my 18 year-old son who read it in a week. I wish I had known the principles which Irwin sets forth so clearly when I began my career! The stampeding bulls will trample the energy and enthusiasm out of many young professionals. I ordered six copies for my family members to help them avoid that fate.

Book Description

Just as Norman Maclean writes at the end of "A River Runs through It" that he is "haunted by waters," so have readers been haunted by his novella. A retired English professor who began writing fiction at the age of 70, Maclean produced what is now recognized as one of the classic American stories of the twentieth century. Originally published in 1976, A River Runs through It and Other Stories now celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary, marked by this new edition that includes a foreword by Annie Proulx.

Maclean grew up in the western Rocky Mountains in the first decades of the twentieth century. As a young man he worked many summers in logging camps and for the United States Forest Service. The two novellas and short story in this collection are based on his own experiencesthe experiences of a young man who found that life was only a step from art in its structures and beauty. The beauty he found was in reality, and so he leaves a careful record of what it was like to work in the woods when it was still a world of horse and hand and foot, without power saws, "cats," or four-wheel drives. Populated with drunks, loggers, card sharks, and whores, and set in the small towns and surrounding trout streams and mountains of western Montana, the stories concern themselves with the complexities of fly fishing, logging, fighting forest fires, playing cribbage, and being a husband, a son, and a father.

By turns raunchy, poignant, caustic, and elegiac, these are superb tales which express, in Maclean's own words, "a little of the love I have for the earth as it goes by." A first offering from a 70-year-old writer, the basis of a top-grossing movie, and the first original fiction published by the University of Chicago Press, A River Runs through It and Other Stories has sold more than a million copies. As Proulx writes in her foreword to this new edition, "In 1990 Norman Maclean died in body, but for hundreds of thousands of readers he will live as long as fish swim and books are made."

"Altogether beautiful in the power of its feeling. . . . As beautiful as anything in Thoreau or Hemingway."—Alfred Kazin, Chicago Tribune Book World

"It is an enchanted tale. . . . I have read the story three times now, and each time it seems fuller."— Roger Sale, New York Review of Books

"Maclean's book—acerbic, laconic, deadpan—rings out of a rich American tradition that includes Mark Twain, Kin Hubbard, Richard Bissell, Jean Shepherd, and Nelson Algren. I love its sound."—James R. Frakes, New York Times Book Review

"The title novella is the prize. . . . Something unique and marvelous: a story that is at once an evocation of nature's miracles and realities and a probing of human mysteries. Wise, witty, wonderful, Maclean spins his tales, casts his flies, fishes the rivers and the woods for what he remembers from his youth in the Rockies."—Publishers Weekly

"Ostensibly a 'fishing story,' 'A River Runs through It' is really an autobiographical elegy that captivates readers who have never held a fly rod in their hand. In it the art of casting a fly becomes a ritual of grace, a metaphor for man's attempt to move into nature."—Andrew Rosenheim, The Independent

Norman Maclean (1902-1990) was the William Rainey Harper Professor of English at the University of Chicago. His book on Montana's Mann Gulch forest fire of 1949, Young Men and Fire, is also available from the University of Chicago Press.

5 out of 5 stars Poetry in motion.......2007-08-05

This is one of the best books I've ever read. It's been a while since I read it, but saw it the other day on my book shelf and just wished I could read it again fresh and brand new for the first time. It has joy, it has heartache. It has love, hate and the cruelty of the world all wrapped wonderfully around the beauty of nature and the awe of God's creation. Passages in this book can move you to tears in both a sad and joyous way. The ending pages are almost like a religious experience. It's hard to find someone in this day and age that can put words together like Norman Maclean did. The book is very poetic. I happen to love fishing, but it doesn't matter if you've ever fished in your life. This book is one you won't ever forget.

5 out of 5 stars grief.......2007-07-25

I love fly fishing. I love Montana. I love rivers. So how could I not like this book? I remember some years ago discussing the novella with a friend, and he said he thought it was too simplistic. I suppose what he was really saying was that it was too sentimental, that it was trying too hard to be poetic, or that it simplified itself into silence to pull at your heartstrings. I see his criticism, but to this day I still don't agree.

I'm a sentimental person who is also a cynic -- so I may shed a tear or two, but I hate it when I do -- especially when I feel at all manipulated. But the final page of this novel always makes me grieve in a way that makes me feel expansively human, and not at all self-conscious.

I wonder how many people who don't share my interests are moved in the same way as I am by this story?

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-06-22

Like Mr. Maclean, I spent a great deal of time, whole summers, in the American West fishing and hiking with my father. This book is the fullest expression yet of the kind of respect and love that can grow between a father and son from the accumulation of small moments of instruction and the act of meditating on those moments for years. This book, as a reflection on nature, and the nature of man and memory and how the two can become intertwined, is simply perfect.

5 out of 5 stars River Runs Through It.......2007-05-26

This is one of the finest books i have ever read. I have never been into fishing of any sort, but Maclean's wonderful sensory detail brings Montana to life in a way that everyone can appreciate. The ending was shocking and powerful, something i will never forget.

5 out of 5 stars a reader.......2007-05-19

if you like to read and like good stories, you wont be disappointed in this book.

no hype is too much for the way mclean writes. he put his story into words when he was in his seventies, and he knows how to reflect and correspond his memories to us his reader, as though we're all old friends.

i can't say anything more about this story or his writings other than:

they're beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars The Naked Roommate.......2007-09-10

Great shipping. Got this for my little brother who is heading off to college next year. He's been really worried about it, and this book really helped him out. It's hilarious, and very informative.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Read.......2007-07-30

I am a first generation college student so it is not as though I had anyone to talk to about what to expect in college. I ordered this book to answer some of my questions. This book did that and so much more. It wasn't a boring "self-help" book; it was engaging and informative at the same time. Truly amazing read. If you are going off to school or your children are going off to school, get this book.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this for my college bound teenagers.......2007-06-28

The author, Harlan Cohen, gives advice on the hard issues, like dating, sex, alcohol and drugs, plus tips on going Greek, getting involved, skipping class and dealing with roommates and the stuff we tend to overlook, like avoiding the 'freshman 15' and doing laundry without losing your unmentionables. And yes, there is a tip on how to deal with a naked roommate (tip #16). My all time favorite advice is what to do if your roommate enjoys having sex in your presence. First he suggests you talk to her and let her know it bothers you and if that doesn't work then invite friends over to watch. She might move her lovemaking to somewhere a little more private if she realizes she has an audience.

There are so many things to love of about this book, but let's start with humor. Harlan doesn't spend over 400 pages preaching. Instead he writes as if he's sitting around chatting with his friend [and that friend is you, the reader]. He cracks jokes. He invites you to check out his mySpace and Facebook pages. And he never once talks down to you. This is great considering the target audience is teenagers and I think we all know how hard they are to get through to.

Another great thing about this book is the testimonials. Each tip begins with a comment from a real live college student. And the tips come from students all over the U.S., even Iowa. It was great to hear from students who are living it, have learned from their mistakes and are willing to share [anonymously]. It made the advice feel more credible since we're hearing it from all different types of students from all different kind of schools.

But what I love best about this book are the chapters on the tough stuff; sex, alcohol and drugs. I'm one of those who thinks we can [and should] preach abstinence and `just say no' to drugs and alcohol, but we also need to make sure our kids understand the consequences and know what to do if they don't listen to our preaching. Some of our kids will experiment and they need to know what to do in those situations. Harlan does a great job of giving both sides.

In the sex section, his advice is to not have sex until you are absolutely ready and in love and won't be ashamed of it in the morning. Several times he states you must feel comfortable enough with your partner to discuss both of your sexual histories. He discusses different birth control options plus what to do if you make a mistake. And he pounds home the point that you need to make sure you aren't doing something drunk that you wouldn't do sober.

In the alcohol and drug sections, he makes it clear that not everybody on campus is getting drunk and high. Kids come in to college thinking everybody gets drunk four nights a week, but the reality is more than half of students are there to [gasp] get an education. But he also has advice for those students who do decide to drink or do drugs. He suggests they figure out how to balance it all; drinking and making it to class so they don't flunk out. He also has some suggestions for dealing with druggie roommates or alcoholic friends.

This is the stuff our college students want to hear about. They don't want to hear their parents preaching "be safe." They want real advice about what to do when they find themselves in these situations and Harlan gives them those answers.

I could go on and on about the great tips offered in this book, but instead I'll just leave you with one last tip; finding your place on campus (tip #3). Throughout the book Harlan emphasizes the need to be involved. Several tips talk about joining sporting clubs or religious clubs or political clubs or starting your own club. This is one of the most important tips in the book. Too many kids spend their first few months holed up in their room not making friends. College is such an amazing experience. Not one second should be wasted and I think with the help of this book kids will be able to dive right in and make the best of it. If you have teenagers get a copy of this book. If you have toddlers, put this in your Amazon wishlist so you'll remember to buy the latest edition when they are teenagers. I can't wait for my teenagers to read it.

I bought this book from a reccomendation from a friend for my daughter and her 2 friends. Each on of them thought "Why did you by this" Once they got reading it they all thought it was very informative. They all have shared it with their friends and all have enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Are You Kidding Me????.......2007-05-21

I'm down to my last few quarters of school and NOW I find out about this book? Are you kidding me? Why didn't I hear about it sooner? Why didn't someone tell me! This book is full of great advice and tips for everything in college; literally everything. I heard about it recently when an author and comedian I have come to admire put it up on his website, recommending it. What a great read. I see hear that some readers say it's just common sense stuff most "kids" can figure out on their own. Well, it's not. I still haven't figured some of this stuff out. It really saves you lots of time and energy and I recommend it to any new freshman, as a gift to graduating HS seniors, or to any current college student. It's a must-read. Book Description

Henry Hill was a born wiseguy, and his love of food got him through both the good and bad times. Even cooking on the run in the Federal Witness Protection Program-where prosciutto was impossible to find and gravy was something you put on mashed potatoes-he managed to keep good Italian food on the table. He still brings this flair for improvisation to his cooking. No recipe is set in stone. And substitutions are listed just in case.

Now, in his inimitable style, Hill tells some spicy stories of his life in the Mob and out, and shows readers how to whip up his favorite dishes, Sicilian-style-recipes to make even the toughest tough-guy beg for more...

Mom's Antipasto € Sunday Gravy (Meat Sauce) € Cheaters Chicken Stock € Striped Bass for Paulie € Fat Larry's Pizza Dough € Henry's Kickback Antipasti Hero € Sicilian Easter Bread with Colored Eggs € Clams Casino € Osso Bucco € Oven Penitentiary Sauce with Sausage € Michael's Favorite Ziti with Meat Sauce € and many others

4 out of 5 stars good cookbook, but.......2007-04-16

I've made a few of the meals in here, and they were very good. Not all that different from the way I cook anyway, but a few differences made the meals better. No problem with the recipes.

My problem is with the marketing of gangster life. This isn't a merely an Italian cookbook-- this is promoted as a MAFIA cookbook ("cooking on the run"?). His life stories are told in euphamistic and humourous fashion, but the reality is very different. The end of the book is almost enraging-- Henry says he he sees pierced and tattoo'd kids eating dinner at McDonald's, and wonders where their parent are-- they ought to be having a nice family dinner at home.

PUHLEEEEZE!!! Read his childrens' book-- "On the Run--A Mafia Childhood". Years of drinking and drug related abuse, not coming home for days at a time, turning his home into a drug and sex den, both before and after his bust-- and much worse stuff-- if you find yourself getting amused by his engagingly told tales of gangster glory or if you find his stories of his Broolyn childhood endearing, then you need to read his childrens' book for balance. See the link below.

Buy this book used. I wouldn't put a dime in Hill's pocket.

On the Run: A Mafia Childhood

5 out of 5 stars A thumping good read. .......2007-02-25

Hill's book is extremely insightful. It's very descriptive and chocked full of authentic Italian recipes and stories from Hill's gangster life. The recipes range from very simple to somewhat complicated, depending on the reader's preference. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about the real-life, but old style of Italian cuisine.

5 out of 5 stars The Wise Guy Cookbook: My Favorite Recipes From My life as a Goodfella to Cooking on the Run.......2007-01-16

A colorfull presentation of some excellent recipes, I truely value this book, in my collection. Try his shrimp receipe for the grill, excellent, my guests loved it and I the simplicity.

5 out of 5 stars Cook better than an Italian restaurant.......2006-12-06

I got this for my husband last Christmas and we haven't found anything that wasn't totally delicious. The only problem is, we can't eat Italian in a restaurant anymore! We cook better at home!! With Henry's precise step-by-step directions, and his delightful autobiographical inserts, this is our favorite cookbook.
If you can stomach it, a viewing of "Goodfellas" really makes the cookbook a lot of fun and brings the voice of Henry Hill to life. Sometimes we can feel him running around our kitchen in his drug-induced haze, preparing his Michael's favorite meatballs just like in the movie!

4 out of 5 stars Great, but not the best.......2006-02-28

My only criticism is that a many of the recipes in the book would be found in any other Italian cookbook. That said, the tips and stories behind the recipes make up for that.
I would recommend it to anyone looking for classic Italian (or Italian-American) food. The book deals with how to make the best food anywhere. No matter where you are, or what your local shops have, you can find something great in these pages. The emphasis is on how you approach cooking, not just what you're making.

Almost two decades after its original publication and more than fifteen years after its author retired from the New York Knicks to become a United States senator, this account of twenty days in a pro basketball season remains a classic in the literature of sports, unparalleled in its candor and intelligence. Book Description

Almost two decades after its original publication and more than fifteen years after its author retired from the New York Knicks to become a United States senator, Bill Bradley's account of twenty days in a pro basketball season remains a classic in the literature of sports, unparalleled in its candor and intelligence.

Bradley takes readers from the court to the locker room, from the seamless teamwork of a winning game to the loneliness of a motel in a strange city. We see Bradley and his fellow Knicks as they withstand the abuse of the press and the smothering adoration of their fans, along with the shameless appeals of those who want to parlay their celebrity into a fast buck. We watch in horror as Earl Monroe is beaten outside Madison Square Garden barely an hour after twenty thousand people cheered him. And we come to understand the euphoria and exhaustion, the icy concentration and intense pressure, that are felt only by those who play basketball for keeps.

4 out of 5 stars A GOOD READ.......2007-03-17

FORMER NBA PLAYER BILL BRADLEY TAKES US THROUGH SOME OF THE 1973-74 KNICKS SEASON, AS SEEN THROUGH THE EYES OF BRADLEY, EARL MONROE, WILLIS REED AND DAVE DEBUSSCHURE. MOST OF IT IS INTERESTING AND WELL WRITTEN. IT IS NOT A TELL ALL OR CONTROVERSIAL BOOK BUT PRETTY MUCH A FACTS ONLY BOOK. SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE HOW THE PLAYERS SPEND THEIR DOWN TIME ON ROAD TRIPS, THE AVAILABILITY OF WOMEN WHO WILL SLEEP WITH JUST ABOUT ANY PLAYER, AND THE INNERPLAY OF THE KNICKS IN PRACTICE AND ON PLANES. I LIKED THIS BOOK BUT IT IS NOTHING GREAT AND IT IS BORING AT TIMES BUT STILL WORTH A PEEK.

3 out of 5 stars Kind of dry.......2006-08-08

He writes about being in the NBA but it's during the 70's when it was so different from now. Players didn't make mega millions then. I can't believe they would still have to do their own laundry and share a hotel room with someone on the team. But it's a nice glimpse into the 70's and professional basketball, I guess. The basketball writing is okay, I've read much better. His writing is pretty dead.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2006-06-09

After reading John McPhee's account of Bill Bradley's years at Princeton, I put the book down and thought it was too good to be true. No NBA player I've ever seen is THAT smart. But after reading Bradley's own Life on the Run, I recant. Bradley IS that smart, and he's a hell of a writer to boot. This one can be spoken about with the same kind of respect due the classic sports profiles, including McPhee's own Levels of the Game. I'm glad I took a chance on this book. It was a real pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read.......1999-07-20

Bill Bradley's account of three weeks in the life of an NBA team in the '70's is as much a stunningly insightful social commentary as it is a nice, easily-rambling, "On the Road"-style ride. Beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars A Trenchant Examination of Life as a Professional Athlete.......1999-05-18

Bradley's memoir of the waning games in the New York Knicks' 1973-74 season (the season after they won their second NBA championship) contains many observations about professional sports that, unfortunately, continue to ring true today: the shameless exploitation of undereducated athletes by agents and comparable parasites; the intrinsic harshness of an itinerant existence during a roadtrip on the West Coast; the grueling physical and mental demands of the NBA regular season; the evanescent nature of fan support. Given all of the above, why then would anyone want to play NBA basketball? Well, Bradley also does a fine job of describing the many thrills an athlete can derive from, among other things, being exhalted by home fans; winning a championship; and being part of a selflless team unit that manages to sublimate individualistic tendancies in its pursuit of greater goals. Bradley's book, from what I can gather, was revolutionary for its time in that it eschewed the type of hagiographic approach that many writers took toward the world of professional sports and ablely demonstrated the myriad difficulties associated with being a player in the nation's largest media spotlight. It should be a must- read for all aspiring NBA players -- especially those players who are considering foregoing several (or all) years of their collegiate eligibilities to make a fast buck. They should be forewarned: "All that glitters isn't gold."

3 out of 5 stars Gangsters, Goodfellas and a jerk........2007-07-29

In a review of his children's book it was stated that Henry comes off well in this book, Wiseguy and the Movie. Just to let people know I thought he comes across as an arrogant, narcisstic jerk, who cares nothing for other people.

4 out of 5 stars Ok Rat book.......2007-05-07

Was good to hear what the rat has been doing since he was freed for giving up the people that protected him and taught him how to make a living.

5 out of 5 stars Never Read This Just Stating . . . .......2007-03-07

People basing this book on the movie "Goodfellas" would be very disappointed. If you looking for the inspiring book of the screenplay for "Goodfellas" should look for Wiseguy by Peligio

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great Story.......2005-09-20

I read the book before seeing the movie, and Wow! I really enjoyed the book and had a hard time putting it down. Very well written. Two thumbs up!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time........2005-08-02

I'm giving this book two stars, and I think that is being VERY generous. I'm a HUGE fan of the movie 'Goodfellas' but this was terrible.

First of all, the writing is horrid. There was no flow whatsoever and Henry Hill kept repeating words. Grammar mistakes were ridiculously obvious (ever heard of having it proofread at least ONCE?) Honestly, I didn't even make it through the whole book, it was that bad. I almost always press myself until the end but this time I decided it wasn't worth it.

Henry Hill was obviously just trying to capitalize on his fame. If you want to read a decent book about Henry check out the one written by his kids (Greg and Gina Hill) called 'On the Run' - that one is worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Study Guide.......2007-05-12

I am blessed by this book because each study is simple and direct. There isn't a lot of reading in each section which keeps it easy for study groups to complete the assigned sections. The questions direct your attention to meanings you might have missed within the assigned verses of Jeremiah which can be a difficult read. Overall, I would suggest this book for any bible study group or individual.

These tapes are so elementary they are embarrassing. I might have done well to listen to this woman's voice before buying. Her laugh alone, drives me up the wall. I think an intelligent woman, who is actually searching for answers, solutions or just insight, would be made angry by this persons flaunting of the ego and her idea of women today. LaRoche is about 30 years behind times.
