Well-planned chapters and abundant illustrations make this text accessible, even to those without previous knowledge of science/medicine. The charts walk you through procedures step-by-step, and mastery of them is crucial to passing your practical exam. The questions at the end of the chapters helped in prepping for exams. Note however, that you should defer to your instructors for information pertaining to state and local protocols - these vary by area, and may have changed since the book was published.

Book Description
Generally regarded as the most important of the Civil War campaigns conducted in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, that of 1864 lasted more than four months and claimed more than 25,000 casualties. The armies of Philip H. Sheridan and Jubal A. Early contended for immense stakes. Beyond the agricultural bounty and the boost in morale to be gained with a victory, events in the Valley would affect Abraham Lincoln's chances for reelection in the November 1864 presidential canvass.
The eleven essays in this volume reexamine common assumptions about the campaign, its major figures, and its significance. Taking advantage of the most recent scholarship and a wide range of primary sources, contributors examine strategy and tactics, the performances of key commanders on each side, the campaign's political repercussions, and the experiences of civilians caught in the path of the armies. The authors do not always agree with one another, but, taken together, their essays highlight important connections between the home front and the battlefield, as well as ways in which military affairs, civilian experiences, and politics played off one another during the campaign.

Customer Reviews:
Nice collection of essays on the 1864 Shenandoah Valley battles.......2007-04-22
This is an interesting collection of essays on the Shenandoah Campaign of 1864. Gary Gallagher has pulled together a set of essays that, even if they sometimes contend with one another, helps the reader get a better understanding of the 1864 conflict.
The dramatic personae in this action include Lee's "bad old boy," Jubal Early, the combative but capable Confederate commander, versus Phil Sheridan, the hyperactive cavalry commander given charge of the Union forces in the Valley. Key players on the Union side: John Crook, leader of the "Army of West Virginia," William Emory of Sheridan's army, the cavalry (Torbert as head, with Merritt and Custer, and Devin as key subordinates). On the Confederate side: infantry commanders such as Gordon, Rodes and Ramseur and cavalry leaders Lomax, Munford, and Rosser. There was a lot of talent on each side, but Early's army was heavily outnumbered (maybe 40,000 troops under Sheridan and 14,000 or so under Early). Such numbers presaged an almost inevitable defeat of Early, with as combative a Union general as Sheridan on the other side (it can safely be said that prior Valley commanders such as Patterson, Hunter, Sigel, and so on may well have wasted such an advantage; Sheridan, despite his flaws as a combat commander, was unlikely to lose under such conditions).
What is nice about this volume is that the authors of the individuals chapters try to assess what actually happened and how good (or bad) commanders actually were, rather than repeating commonly understood judgments. What about the "Woodstock Races" after the Confederate cavalry's disastrous defeat at Tom's Brook? Confederate ineptitude? Or Union overwhelming force? What about Early versus Sheridan as commander of an army? Gallagher's chapter addresses this in a sensitive manner.
At Cedar Creek, what happened? Did Early's so-called "fatal halt" lose the day? Or were the Confederates so outnumbered and outgunned that--aside from total incompetence in Union leadership--they simply could not triumph? Another essay explores the generalship of the 6th Corps commander, Horatio Wright. The conclusions is that he did a good job as commander after the surprise attack while Sheridan was absent and may not have received the credit due him. Still, his performance in other venues in the Civil War was uneven. Here, however, he probably deserves good grades.
And so on. The essays in this volume provoke some thinking about the Valley Campaign of 1864. This is a good work to look at. The chapters are somewhat uneven (as to be expected from an edited volume), but--all in all--this is a useful examination of the subject.
Great Essays on the 1864 Confederate Collapse in the Valley: Early v. Sheridan .......2006-11-06
Another one of Gallagher's collection of great essays of a campaign while touting the greatest historians on the subject. The authors in this case cover the 1864 Valley situation from Early's arrival to save Lynchburg to his run at Washington to Sheridan's final mobilizing drive that is momentarily derailed by Early's great shock attack at Cedar Creek that crushes the unprepared Federals. But of course, the Union's regrouping at Cedar and counter attack virtually destroys Early's army. The essays cover the key battles and strategies including the make up of Early, Sheridan and a respectful view of the not so flamboyant and thus unappreciated General Horatio Wright who held things together at Cedar Creek when Sheridan arrived on the field. The latter part of the book also includes the social effect the war had on its population particularly as the means to feed the Confederate war machine was destroyed as part of the grand union strategy. Early and the Confederate Army no doubt fought heroically enough to challenge the record of Stonewall; however, they were literally overwhelmed by numbers and better horses and equipment. Of course, once confident, Sheridan keeps the pressure on with his young lions, Custer, Merritt and Torbet. A grand example of that is Robert E. L. Krick's essay on the battle of Tom Brook between the Confederate and Union cavalry that is extremely one sided, resulting in a total crushing of the Confederate horse. It's amazing that the Confederates were able to reorganize and launch what was at first a highly successful attack at Cedar Creek 10 days later. This recovery and attack is a tribute to Early, who unfortunately used his infamous tongue lashing too harshly afterwards demonstrating one of his worst character flaws. The other great aspect of these talented authors is their research, which is so impeccable that they sort out the historical misrepresentations and get to the truth of the matter, albeit at the expense of some such as John Gordon, the great fighter and embellisher. The only negative, I wish there was a summary of the battles in date line fashion along with a map that showed where all the key battles were fought. I also wish the summary of the situation prior to Early's arrival included a discussion of General "Grumble" Jones battle of Piedmont where he lost his life trying to stop General Hunter's attack of the valley. As an additional note, these fine historians get together almost every summer and provide excellent tours of the valley, a treat worth considering.
Another volume in a good series.......2006-06-12
This book of essays covers aspects of the Shenandoah Valley campaign of 1864. As is the case with all the volumes in this series, a number of military, social, and political issues are discussed. The essays are generally well-written and provide insights into some topics not evaluated in general histories of the campaign. Particularly good is the essay comparing the general performances of Sheridan and Early. One is left realizing that, given the resources available to each, Early actually did better than could have been expected and Sheridan made more errors than he should have. Worth the price of the entire volume, is the excellent biographical monograph about General Horatio Wright. This is the first attempt ever to provide a biographical sketch of this important but overlooked officer. The essay is balanced, well-researched, and very worthwhile to the serious student of this period.
This book is not for someone unfamiliar with this campaign but, as is the case with the rest of the series, is of value to the experienced Civil War reader.

Excellent to use with my inmates!.......2005-09-24
I teach adult male inmates in a maximum security prison, and besides ESL students, we have a number of very low level GED students, too. It is hard to find materials that are actually reproducible, so I jumped at this book when I found it listed on Amazon. I have used it about three weeks now. It has been an excellent addition to my class materials.
A good source for tests on grammar for the ESL student.......2000-08-10
This book contains 1000 Grammar Tests that are easily reproduced for classroom use. These tests follow the sequence given in the authors series of Clear Grammar books but can easily be adapted to any lessons given on grammar. Each chapter has tests on a particular grammar point and at least two types of tests. (Multiple choice, fill in the blanks, sentence writing etc) This book and his series are designed for the beginner and intermediate ESL student but can easily be used in any school setting. Tests follow the same chapter sequence as the Clear Grammar Series but you can also look up tests by the grammar point you wish to test. This book does not teach any grammar points, it is simply a book of tests to help the teacher evaluate and re-inforce the information taught.

Customer Reviews:
Brilliant, Once It Hit Its Stride.......2007-10-14
In the seventies, superhero books were, if not dead, at least very sleepy. So Marvel tried everything but the kitchen sink. And not only were many of these works highly experimental, but they were often passed from creator to creator until something clicked (Master of Kung Fu and Iron Fist were two other features that took a while to find their feet).
That Killraven survived is miraculous-- the early versions of the feature were less-than-wonderful. But once P. Craig Russell and Don McGregor took over, this was some of the stuff of the decade. The writing moves from cheesy post-apocalyptic tripe to subtle, nuanced examinations of war and heroism, laced with moments of humor and extraordinary beauty. Not until Moore's Swamp Thing and Moench's Shang-Chi would anyone write comics this powerful and literate.
But yes-- you do have to wade through some other stuff to get there. Think of it as just gathering backstory until you get to the real meat. Marvel did the creators the favor of a heads-up on cancellation, so there is a story that gives a sense of completion. Then Russell and McGregor got to create a graphic novel that really tied things up-- unfortunately, translating the oversized, painted-illustration pages to this format loses a little something.
There's certainly some dross here, but get this volume for some pure comics gold from the seventies.
Killraven.......2007-03-25
This essential Killraven is great. It has all of the classic killraven you could want. The comic book is not up to par with the original by H.G Wells, but it is better than all of the other adaptions and sequels out their.
Once again the "comic literati" don't get it........2006-12-24
What made Killraven so unique in the timeframe it was created was that, like some other Marvel series of the time, tried to elevate the comic artform to a higher level while maintaining the essential simplisity of the genre. Let's face it folks, comics are kids stuff. Even those, like myself, who enjoy comics as an adult must admit that we enjoy comics on a different artistic level. These are not Tolstoy tomes. They are not Stephen King works. They cannot be. Even today's "graphic novels" fall short if we critique them as "literature". Yes, yes the Killraven series has plotting issues and other "literary" gaffs but what makes it so interesting when judged against comics of its era, is the stellar writing of Don MacGregor. Here we find a writer willing to "talk up" to his audience and create interesting and articulate dialogue. This was rather unique for this time period. FYI- MacGregor and Russel teamed up on another short live series called Black Panther which was also excellent. Later, they brought an end to the Killraven saga with a grahic novel that tied up all the loose ends. Finally MaGregor created a graphic novel called "Blade" (not the Snipes character).
A lot griping aside.......2005-12-12
Well, the fanboys have spoken. Forget objectivity when it comes to fans of superhero fare. They know what they like and anything else just can't hold a candle. For what it's worth Killraven was never a stellar character.
He wasn't supposed to be.
His storyline is not one of triumphing in tights. It's a grim story about shattered hopes and survival in a world no longer run by his species but by a merciless species more interested in food and entertainment (waitaminute! who does that sound like?). This series is a SF adventure and the outfits of the rebels are hardly very practical but rather exotic and formfitting, more like futuristic pirates and adventurers. However, the world these folks live in is not one of charismatic leadership and daring deeds, but one of avoiding capture and, on occasion, some violent acts of vengeance with side trips for the freeing of some slaves (those who want to be freed, seeing as slavery makes some feel secure where life on the run is not very romantic or practical).
The stories are often off the mark BUT they are still very often poingant and relevant to life on a shattered world. Killraven's fellows are a motley lot but they are also, clearly, family. The artwork in these books is uneven but some of these tales had beautiful, illustrative qualities that were pure artistic endulgence. P. Craig Russell really grew with each issue going from a very lush, full bodied style to a minimalistic yet well rendered style (a style he with for several years after this run). The first tale is illustrated by a very inspired Neal Adams (in my opinion this was his best work ever) and new guy by the name of Howard Chaykin who also did a very good job. Herb Trimpe drew several issues and some of it may not have been his best but the earlier issues were certainly, wonderfully, different from his previous superhero work.
Now to the charge that Earth could not be over-run by Martians with the host of Marvel Heroes to contend with; well, the early issues made no reference to the Marvel Earth of the time. This was done later when Marvel tried to marry the 2 completely divergent worlds into a single one. When the Martians attack in the issue of Amazing Adventures #18 there were no superhero references. After all, this was meant to be a different kind of property. Marvel's editors did the same asinine thing with Robert Howard's characters, Conan, Kull and Red Sonya (and during roughly the same time period which says something about the editorial direction of the period which was very disheartening). It was beyond stupid to do this. They probably hoped to promote the book more by tying this series into the "Marvelverse" but evidently hadn't seriously thought it through. The writers can't be held totally responsible for this bad idea.
Anyway, the point is, I found this series inspired if not always on the mark. The efforts are to be applauded but not regaled.
For those who didn't "get it", well no surprise there. They view all comics from a superhero genre standpoint (often ignoring the drek that regularly inhabits that genre and it's characters). This work should not be judged from the superheroic perspective or that genre. It was much more like a science fiction adventure, something like Sparticus meets the Martian invaders (that just came to me!). It's flawed like all comics that suffer from a lot of handling and manipulation at the hands of several editors over a short time period. Imagine a film that has three different directors, and each one having a different take on the story. Despite this manhandling the writers and artists actually provided some reliable and, sometimes, well-above-the-standard, entertainment.
And you can't beat the price. This is among my favorites in the Essential line. I give it 4 stars for efforts not appreciated and for some very good work that rises above a lot of what was a bleak period for Marvel.
Worst Ever PAP.......2005-11-01
I have to agree with many other reviewers. After 30 years of reading comics of all genres, this was the absolute worst.
Plotlines that don't follow consecutively, characters of worth appearing and dying straight away or leaving for ridiculous reasons. Characters with swords and "ninja stars" defeating towering metal tripods with advanced weaponry? Nonsense!
Awful in every sense of the word. Don't be like me and buy this because "well-maybe-the-reviewers-don't-know-what-they-are-talking-about". It's bad news.

An exposé about being black in a white world........1998-10-26
Black Shack Alley is the beautifully presented story of one young boy, José Hassam and his struggles to understand the racially divided world of Martinique. The author Joseph Zobel, through the first person narrative of José, gives us insights into the hard life of the cane plantation where José first lives with his grandmother, the opportunities that schooling provides to a young black boy and the ultimate struggle of giving up one's culture to become alienated but more successful in society. That is the choice for Martiniquans who desire to succeed, they must become alienated from their creole beginnings to fit into the only acceptable society, which is white and French. Zobel presents this as the only real option for José which concurs with the social feeling at that time. This book is a reminder of the struggle for identity that has occurred in the past of Martinique. It is a long way from the more contemporary work of Patrick Chamoiseau and his book Texaco which heralds a new era that applauds the creole beginnings and rejects accepting all white ways. This is a very moving story which can teach us a lot about Martiniquan traditions as well as being valuable in the time honoured tradition of storytelling. Necessary reading for understanding the depths of Martiniquan society.
